Dear reader,

Liebe Leserinnen und Leser,

As orchestras continue to focus on innovation in the concert hall, chamber orchestra repertoire is increasingly becoming a fixture in concert programming. Perhaps one reason for this is clear: a smaller, more nimble ensemble opens up endless possibilities for alternative performance venues, not to mention the opportunities for a more creative use of those spaces. Take for example the upcoming performances of the hugely successful and pioneering New York–based Wordless Music Series, which includes performances at the multimedia art cabaret Le Poisson Rouge in downtown Manhattan, the Brooklyn Masonic Temple, the World Financial Center Winter Garden, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum and more. Beyond these practical considerations, however, one cannot ignore the effect a more intimate setting, both physically and musically, can have on an audience. When each individual instrument plays a more integral role in the sound of the whole, when even the raw sounds like the opening and closing of horn valves or the scrape of a violin bow are discernable, an audience’s connection to the ensemble is heightened, and the results can be truly captivating. Indeed, some of my own most visceral and lasting reactions to music have come from the chamber orchestra: the première of Alvin Singleton’s Brooklyn Bones and The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra’s performance of Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s Concerto funebre immediately spring to mind. In this issue of Schott Aktuell we are happy to announce three chamber orchestra premières on three continents with Andrew Norman’s Apart, Together in New York, Olli Mustonen’s Concert Champêtre in Helsinki, and Toshi Ichiyanagi’s Symphony No. 8 in Tokyo. Our Repertoire Recommendation section offers a survey of our composers’ most recent forays in the chamber orchestra world, and is complemented by our international promotion directors’ personal chamber orchestra recommendations. Lastly, we offer just a glimpse of what is to come in 2012.

Wishing all of our readers health and happiness as we bid adieu to 2011!

The unprecedented experience led me to look into my thoughts on the Japanese geographical features and on our way of living in this country more deeply and strictly. That is indispensable for me in order to keep a creative attitude as a composer. Symphony No. 8 will not only become a turning point in my activities as a composer, but also show a new way of thinking for my following works. Toshi Ichiyanagi

Toshi Ichiyanagi

• 11 Nov 2011 · München (D) Studio I im Funkhaus Elisabet Woska, Sprecherin Carl Amadeus Hiller, japanische Trommeln Takuya Taniguchi, japanische Trommeln Thomas Sporrer, japanische Trommeln Münchner Rundfunkorchester Dirigent Kevin John Edusei + 11 Nov München (D), 12 Nov Garmisch-Partenkirchen (D) Ophelia has grown old as a prompter in the theatre. On the evening the theatre is being closed down, a shadow appears: he doesn’t belong to anyone and nobody wants him, so Ophelia takes him home. Soon many others follow and find their home with Ophelia who teaches them all the tragedies and comedies she knows. When she loses her home, the shadows decide to play the theatre works in front of an audience: this is the birth of shadow theatre. The final shadow to be adopted by Ophelia is Death. This is however not yet the end of the story: in heaven, many more are waiting to experience the theatre of the now liberated shadows. Wilfried Hiller’s melodrama combines Michael Ende’s moving story with music which acquires an individual intensity and character through the interaction of Japanese drumming and a classical orchestra. Ophelias Schattentheater is perfectly suited for concerts for children and young people!

This work is dedicated to the victims of the Armenian genocide. During its composition, I was confronted by the problem of differing interpretations of the canonical texts laid down by the Armenian and RomanCatholic churches. Armenian Christians believe for example that the intonation of the ’Kyrie eleison’ according to the Western tradition is more the representation of a challenge rather than an imploring entreaty. I naturally selected the Armenian tradition; I had no wish to copy the rhetoric and gestures of a rite to which I am unaccustomed. I hope that the interlinking of ancient sacred and secular music of Armenia with the Latin text has created something unexpected and even slightly paradox in my music. Tigran Mansurian Tigran Mansurian

Tigran Mansurian

Circulus vitiosus „Teufelskreis“ für Oboe und Cembalo (Klavier, Orgel) (2010) 5’

• 30 Nov 2011 · München (D) Wirtshaus im Schlachthof Albrecht Mayer, Oboe Hansjörg Albrecht, Cembalo The term ’Circulus vitiosus’ or vicious circle is used to describe a system in which certain factors become intensified and aggravate each other. Within the field of social science, the ’circulus vitiosus’ is also defined as a ’spiral with a downward tendency’ (such as the spiral of silence, the debt trap or the poverty spiral). In this composition for oboe and harpsichord (which can also be performed with piano or organ), the ’circulus’ defines a fast whirling circular motion in rondo form which incorporates certain musicological diabolic features such as the tritone (diabolus in musica), sliding chromaticism and ’Devil’s trills’. The soloist is then free to extend his own diabolesque fantasies further in a cadenza (ad lib.). Enjott Schneider

The fast first movement’s (Feroce) large-scale design opens with the four soloists collaboratively playing a series of assertive bass drum and timpani gestures followed by sharp low register orchestral punctuations and rapid, spiky high register phrases in the piccolo and flutes. The slow second movement explores the deep resonant melodic and harmonic sonorities of the marimba. The third movement (Con Fervore) is fast and engages all of the drums, first as a collective ensemble followed by individual improvised solos. The final section introduces bucket drums in a spirited ’give and take’ of improvised cadenzas concluding, coda-like, with materials of the first movement. Bayerisch-babylonischer Marsch für Orchester (2011) Auftragswerk der Bayerischen Staatsoper 4’ • 9 Dec 2011 · München (D) Bayerische Staatsoper Akademiekonzerte der Bayerischen Staatsoper 2011 Orchester der Bayerischen Staatsoper Dirigent Kent Nagano + 11 Dec München (D) When Kent Nagano told the composer Jörg Widmann about his idea of presenting the original programme

marking the establishment of the Musikalische Akademie of the Bayerische Staatsorchester (December 1811) in a concert in 2011, but with the inclusion of a new contemporary commission, Widmann responded enthusiastically. The occasion gave him the opportunity to express his affinity with Kent Nagano and the orchestra of the Bayerische Staatsoper and he composed a Bayerisch-babylonischer Marsch, an extremely fast and virtuosic piece in which a variety of superimposed and contradictory dance forms become unified in a boisterous frolic.

Birthdays / Geburtstage

Nino Rota 100 3 December 2011 Nino Rota once said: ’Composing does not seem like work for me.’ This could be because music was already a completely familiar language to Rota from his early childhood; he experimented with composition at the same time as learning to write and began singing while learning to speak. His first song, La mia prima canzone scribbled on a piece of paper, shows that his writing and musical notation were both somewhat untidy. The creation of music was however the most natural thing in the world for the infant prodigy born in Milan. His mother was intelligent enough not to develop the ambitions of a ’stage mother’ and insisted on a solid and child-oriented education for her son. The highly gifted boy soon mastered instrumentation and form alongside learning to conduct a large orchestra: at the precocious age of eleven, he stood in front of a professional orchestra and conducted the first performance of his large-scale oratorio L’infanzia di San Giovanni Battista. As an adult, the exceptionally gifted melodic inventor devoted himself almost exclusively to the composition of film music and gained worldwide fame with his approximately 150 soundtracks. These works are complemented by a no less impressive œuvre comprising concert works, sacred music and music theatre compositions which have been somewhat upstaged in the public eye by his film compositions. Some works were never performed and others not even published. Rota did not see any difference in the quality of the two halves of his output: ’There are not two Nino Rotas. Admittedly, the music you have just heard is less well known than the principal melody of Armacord, but for me it is the same music. It is my music. It is others who see the difference.’ The interest in Rota’s ’serious’ music only really picked up after the composers death and has continued to grow. Schott regularly issues first publications of works not previously available, the latest example being the Allegro danzante for clarinet and piano; next up is the publication of Il

richiamo, a quintet for soprano and strings. We have recently issued a catalogue of all Rota works available at Schott (KAT 115-99) which we would be happy to send you free of charge.

Seven of the twenty premières in this preview are operas for children! This shows how seriously theatres are addressing their audiences of tomorrow. And classics from our contemporary repertoire are also featured in major theatres: Le Grand Macabre will receive its Spanish première in Barcelona in November and Palestrina will be given in Zurich from December onwards. Finally, a mention of a very special delicacy: from November onwards, Lincke’s operetta Casanova will delight its audiences in Nordhausen – an opportunity to experience the master of that unique form: Berlin operetta!

CHAMBER ORCHESTRA C

hamber orchestra – An ambiguos term, which seems not to have been in use before the 20th century. It has been interpreted as meaning a large chamber music group and also an orchestra smaller than a large symphony orchestra. The New Grove Dictionary struggles to establish a clear definition for a typical chamber orchestra, as do the majority of other musical dictionaries – and we are confronted by the same problem. Many composers also exert a high degree of freedom in their specification ’for chamber orchestra’ which can encompass a wide spectrum of instrumental constellations and dimensions. A single type of chamber orchestra simply does not exist, but over a hundred works in our catalogue have been composed for one among the numerous ensemble variants. Where is it possible to draw the line? On this occasion, we are keeping to the model of our composers Ichiyanagi, Mustonen and Norman whose new works for their own personal chamber orchestra are presented on page four of this magazine. Our selection of compositions described on the following pages all conform to a few general criteria: all works have been composed in the last ten years (since 2002) and are scored for a mixed chamber orchestra (wind and strings without soloist parts) consisting of a minimum of 12 players.

K

Wo also die Grenze ziehen?

The dog barks, the caravan passes on. It is an exuberant piece in three movements, full of the energy of its subject, with flying strings and striding horns reminiscent of Tippett.

Isolation for chamber orchestra (2006) 15’ Instrumentation: 1.0.ca.0.bcl.12.1.1.0-pno-str(3.3.4.3.2 minimum) ◆ 1 May 2006 Stratford-upon-Avon (UK) · Orchestra of the Swan · Nicholas Cleobury The title of this piece refers to the segregation of musical material – Joe Duddell became interested in the perception of disjointed gestures while studying Webern. However, Duddell quotes Stravinsky’s Symphony of Wind Instruments or Tippett’s Concerto for Orchestra as more obvious influences. The title is also borrowed from Joy Division’s album Closer, which for Duddell still has a strong resonance.

Michael Tippett

Suite in D suite for the Birthday of Prince Charles for orchestra (1948) 16’ Instrumentation: 2(2pic).2.2.2-4.2.3.1-timp.perc(tub bells, cym, s.d)-hp-str ◆ 15 Nov 1948 London (UK) · BBC Symphony Orchestra · Sir Adrian Boult Suite in D was one of three commissions by the BBC to celebrate the birth of the current Prince of Wales and is one of Michael Tippett’s most straightforward works. The first movement uses church bells, trumpets and material from the hymn tune Crimond, (which was played at the Queen’s wedding). The second has a traditional French cradle song interrupted by slightly more apprehensive music. The third movement borrows a march from Tippett’s The Midsummer Marriage which frames an Irish dance with bravura-like accompaniment. An old English medieval hymn, Angelus and Virginem appears in the fourth movement, and the finale uses an array of folk tunes and gives the effect of a crowd in a cheerful, celebratory mood.

ments and tonal explorations to a dazzling climax.

senting the viola solo remains in its original version forming the central movement. The music strides forth in its transparent instrumentation, only to die away in the culminating soft tones of the percussion.

Kammerkonzert 05

Hans Werner Henze skilfully spans the distance between the Baroque and modern periods in his music for José Montes-Baquer’s film ’Montezuma’ dating from 1980, undertaking an entertaining journey through time and different countries accompanied by the protagonist of this story. Around twenty years later, Henze made a concert version for three quasi-solo instruments and chamber orchestra. The first movement begins with the tuning of the instruments. This general unrest is followed by an Allegro vivace in which the swinging Baroque dance style gradually breaks out of its harmonic and tonal constraints and is subsequently blended with bizarre rhythms. The concluding Tarantella begins with the virtuoso piano part, building up gradually into a contrapuntal texture incorporating jazz ele-

Kammerkonzert für 13 Instrumentalisten (1969-1970) 21’ Besetzung: 1 (auch Picc.) · 1 (auch Ob. d’am., Engl. Hr.) · 2 (2. auch Bassklar.) · 0 - 1 · 0 · 1 · 0 - Cemb. (auch Hammond-Org. od. (1 · 1 · 1 · 1 · 1) ◆ 1 Oct 1970 Berlin (D) · Ensemble „die reihe“ Wien · Friedrich Cerha There must be a very good reason for any work to be performed as frequently as György Ligeti’s Kammerkonzert. In this case, there are three reasons: firstly, the Kammerkonzert is an excellent and fascinating piece which directly captivates both performers and listeners despite the work’s extreme complexity. Secondly, Ligeti treats each instrument like a soloist, ensuring that each individual musician in the ensemble has an interesting part to play. Thirdly, the composer’s concept and implementation of polymetrics is simply ingenious: the parallelism of different tempi which are here combined with ‘super fast soloist actions’ (Ligeti) produces the unique and breathtaking ‘Ligeti sound’, soaring and iridescent, for which the composer continues to be admired and revered up to the present day.

My grandfather was a master of Ikebana (the traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement); Zeami, the original practioner of the traditional

Spiritual and dreamlike lines comingle with explosive noise representing the soldier’s conflicting state of reflecting on the enormity of the moment while engaging in fierce combat.

· 1 · 0 · Engl. Hr. · Es-Klar. · 1 · 1 - 2 · 1 · 1 · 0 - Str. (8 Vl. · 4 Va. · 4 Vc. · 2 Kb.) ◆ 22 May 2003 München (D) · Münchener Kammerorchester · Christoph Poppen In Mascarade, I have combined a number of scattered motifs from my opera Vipern in a virtuoso concert piece. The slow introduction with its pallid-iridescent string textures overlaid by aggressive wind arabesques conjures up much of the gloomy underlying atmosphere of the opera. The gesticulating and eruptive driving force of the fast second section is reminiscent of a Baroque dance – it is however a ‘dance on the volcano’: mask-like, distorted and threatening. Christian Jost

Alle Instrumentalisten spielen zusätzlich diverse Schlagzeuge und Geräuscherzeuger ◆ 1 Mar 2008 Amsterdam (NL) · Nieuw Ensemble · Ed Spanjaard In Nocturne – Insomnia the point is not just to write ‘tonal = beautiful = slow’, but to go beyond this obvious principle which is commonly associated with more recent tonal music and also to draw ’tonal threads’ through more dramatic, intensely agitated parts. In the first part, an arc is drawn from the deepest depths to the highest possible tones; on its return to the lower register, more and more sounds and rhythmic expanses come together, which then trigger off the second section: a completely restless entity that repeatedly attempts to calm itself down but will never succeed. The ensemble is almost always treated as a collective: the ensemble itself as a soloist, as ONE body, which goes through the various stations of a night. At the end of the piece, the state of insomnia has not been dispelled, nor has it been assuaged. Not even the small ‘sleep phase’ right at the end can convince us otherwise. Thomas Larcher

Toru Takemitsu

Tree Line for chamber orchestra (1988) 13’ Instrumentation: 1(afl).1.2(2.bcl).1(cbsn)-2.1.1.0-2perc(vib, antique cym, tub bells, glsp, 2cym on pedal timp)hp.pno(cel)-str(1.1.1.1.1) ◆ 20 May 1988 London (UK) · London Sinfonietta · Oliver Knussen I have never listened to such resonant and beautiful music for such a limited instrumentation, filled with sensitive resonance like a forest enveloped in mist, where occasionally some intense phrase emerges out of the hushed atmosphere. The gradual transformation of the sound colour makes me forget the structural nature of the tempo and metre. In the coda, a last melody played by the off-stage oboist sounds like the thrilling call of a bird at daybreak. In contrast to the representational title Tree Line, the work is, in essence, a thirteen-minute 'dream' by Toru Takemitsu.

Peter Maxwell Davies

Last Door of Light for chamber orchestra (2008) 20’ Instrumentation: 1.2.0.2-2.0.2.0timp-str(7.6.5.4.3) ◆ 23 Jul 2008 Ossiach (A) · Camerata Salzburg · Peter Maxwell Davies Peter Maxwell Davies was thinking of individual and communal vulnerability when composing this piece, especially in relation to the problem of climate change and his home in the Orkney Islands, which is under threat from rising sea levels. However, this theme is not a completely negative one: Davies claims we must all enter the last door of light but the journey is full of light and joy. The melody at the start of the work, which Davies composed in the ‘70’s and never used, could be an Island folk melody and is subject to constant transformation throughout the piece before reaching apotheosis at the end. Peter Maxwell Davies’ Last Door of Light beschreibt die individuelle und zugleich gesellschaftliche Verwundbarkeit, besonders in Bezug auf den Klimawandel und hinsichtlich seiner eigenen, vom steigenden Meeres-

spiegel bedrohten Heimat Orkney Islands.

Unstuck for chamber ensemble (2008/2011) 10’ Instrumentation: 1.1.1.1-1.1.1.0-2perc (tom-t, bng, ratchet, vib, cow bells, tin cans, tempbl)-hp.pno-str ◆ 1 Mar 2011 California, Los Angeles, CA (USA) · Thornton Contemporary Music · Don Crockett I have never been more stuck than I was in the winter of 2008. My writing came to a grinding halt in January and for a long time this piece languished on my desk, a mess of musical fragments that refused to cohere. The following May, I saw a copy of Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five and remembered one of its iconic sentences, that I had a

breakthrough realization. The sentence was this: ’Billy Pilgrim has come unstuck in time’, and the realization was that the lack of coherence in my ideas was to be embraced and explored, not overcome. Musical fragments become unstuck in that sections from the beginning, middle and end crop up in the wrong places like the flashbacks and flash-forwards that define the narrative structure of Vonnegut’s novel. Try for chamber orchestra (2011) 14’ Instrumentation: 1.1.1.1-1.1.1.0-2percpno-2vn.va.vc.db ◆ 24 May 2011 Los Angeles, CA (USA) · Los Angeles Philharmonic · John Adams Disney Hall and the LA Philharmonic have meant so much to me over the years that the overwhelming desire to write for them the perfect piece was enough to stop me dead in my creative tracks. It took me many months to realize the obvious: my piece was never going to be perfect no matter how hard I tried. The best thing I could do to honour the adventurous spirit of the Philharmonic and Disney Hall was to try as many new things as I could, to embrace the risk and failure and serendipitous discovery implicit in the word ’try’. This piece is messy, fragmented, and it certainly doesn’t

Repertoire Recommendations / Tipps für Ihre Programmplanung get things right on the first try. It does things over and over, trying them out in as many different ways as it can. After ten minutes of increasingly frantic trying, it finds one small, unlikely bit of musical material it likes enough to repeat and polish until it finally gets it right. Andrew Norman

flekkicht für Barockorchester (2004) 14’ Besetzung: 2 (2. auch Picc.) · 2 (2. auch Ob. da caccia) · 0 · 1 - 2 · 0 · 0 · 0 - Cemb. · Laute ad lib. - Str. (4 · 4 · 2 · 2 · 1) ◆ 27 Aug 2005 Luzern (CH) · Freiburger Barockorchester · Gottfried von der Goltz flekkicht is a baroque piece in the original sense of the word: manifold, at times declamatory or ornate. The score contains many liberties in execution; only a few hints are provided on articulation, timbre and dynamics. flekkicht demands an active, ’interventional’ interpretation similar to today’s performance practice of Baroque music. The dramaturgy of the composition is – far more than usual in my music – characterized by clear cuts between sections, each displaying a single distinguishing ’affect’. Benjamin Schweitzer

Benjamin Schweitzer

Snapshots starts off by revealing bits of each of the two bars (with episodes placed in-between). The full two bars of music are then revealed at the end of the piece. Snapshots is a tribute to Olly [Oliver Knussen] on his 50th birthday. Geburtstag komponiert.

Madrigali for chamber orchestra (1977) 22’ Instrumentation: 1.1.0.0-1.1.0.0-perc(vib, bng, s.d, 2tom-t, tam-t)-str ◆ 1977 Washington, DC (USA) · National Symphony Orchestra · Rafael Druian For me, discovering music that mines the riches of the past while creating a completely new listening experience is always a thrill. Few works achieve the delicate balance of old and new as effectively as Bernard Rands’s Madrigali. Besides marking a key turning point in Rands’s compositional style, Madrigali is a stunningly beautiful collection of five short movements, each one composed from materials derived from or based upon musical characteristics found in Monteverdi’s Eighth Books of Madrigals. Listening to it one has the sense of coming upon some unearthed ancient treasure seen and understood anew through contemporary eyes.

◆ 4 Mar 2005 Birmingham (UK) · Birmingham Contemporary Music Group · Susanna Mälkki Rondo begins with a fast, energetic idea in the woodwind instruments with a distinctive rhythmic profile that pervades the opening section. The musical material of the piece returns three times throughout the work in different forms, either extended, developed or condensed.

The intention was to gather inspiration for a new composition in the cosmopolitan city on the Persian Gulf, but his Dubairische Tänze sound far closer to his native Bavaria than the Middle East: Bavarian Ländler, Zwiefache and a substantial collection of other wittily alienated dances form a highly unorthodox, contemporary yet entertaining piece.

teenth one. He took the word ’projection’ from Jean-Paul Sartre’s ’projet’, which he interprets as expressing ideas and intentions in terms of time and projecting them towards future. He comprehends music in terms of ’transitions in sonic energy over time’. This piece is focused on the tension caused by timbre, for example, a contrast of light and shade, perspective of sound, and spatiality that is brought from the three-dimensional movements in music, and also on the sound texture. Seit 1955 komponiert Joji Yuasa Werkreihen gleichen Titels.

Igor Strawinsky

Concerto in E flat ’Dumbarton Oaks’ für Kammerorchester (1937-1938)

T

he American musical patrons Mildred and Robert Wood Bliss were considering which distinguished composer to commission to create a work in celebration of their 30th wedding anniversary in 1938. The couple had made the acquaintance of Igor Stravinsky in April the preceding year at the première of his ballet Jeu de Cartes in New York and had subsequently invited the composer to their country home ’Dumbarton Oaks’ in Washington D.C. to talk about a new composition. Stravinsky only just managed to complete the work in time for the anniversary celebrations: its date of completion was also the date of its first performance. For his classically styled three-movement work, he selected the title Concerto in E flat, adding the subtitle Dumbarton Oaks as a dedication. The structure of the work references the concerto grosso: it features a soloist ensemble which unites in the tutti sequences but also plays in concertino groups during the solo episodes. Broken chordal structures characterise the central movement whereas the outer movements are distinguished through their use of fugato. Dumbarton Oaks went on to become one of Stravinsky’s most successful works, performed widely and delighting Mildred Bliss so much that she immediately issued another commission, for the Symphony in C. Its composer’s very public commitment to American cultural life helped pave the way for Stravinsky’s emigration to the USA in 1945.
