Liebe Leserinnen und Leser,

Welcome to our ballet issue! This autumn sees the première of two major ballet scores by Gavin Bryars who, in addition to his pieces for the concert and operatic stage, has built a highly-acclaimed body of work in the field of dance over the last 25 years.

Highlights of Bryars’ ballet repertoire include the classic BIPED which he created with Merce Cunningham, and an ongoing series of pieces with the Canadian choreographer Édouard Lock. Bryars’ premières this autumn are Peer Gynt with Gregor Zöllig at the Theater Bielefeld, and 11th Floor with Édouard Lock for Cullberg Ballet. The first piece takes its inspiration from Edvard Grieg’s incidental music from the Henrik Ibsen play, while the second evokes the sounds and imagery of 1940s and 1950s American ‘film noir’.

in diesem Herbst dürfen wir Sie mit einem schott aktuellBallettspezial begrüßen. Gleich zwei Ballette des Komponisten Gavin Bryars erleben im Oktober ihre Uraufführung. Schon in den vergangenen 25 Jahren bereicherte der britische Komponist das zeitgenössische Tanz-Repertoire mit einer beachtlichen Zahl von Balletten. Zu den Highlights seines Schaffens gehört der Klassiker BIPED, den er mit Merce Cunningham kreierte. Eine Reihe weiterer Stücke entstanden in Zusammenarbeit mit dem kanadischen Choreographen Édouard Lock.

Das Ballett 11th Floor in der Choreographie von Édouard Lock feiert am 10. Oktober Premiere. Mit seinen Klängen und Bildern erinnert es an den amerikanischen „film noir“ der 1940er und 1950er Jahre. Für Peer Gynt – maßgeblich inspiriert von Edvard Griegs Szenenmusik zu Henrik Ibsens gleichnamigem Schauspiel – in einer Choreographie von Gregor Zöllig öffnet sich der Vorhang des Theater Bielefeld am 19. Oktober.

Schott Music does, of course, have a long history in the world of ballet, having published Igor Stravinsky’s L’Oiseau de feu, Jeu de cartes and Scènes de Ballet, as well as, among others, Hans Werner Henze’s masterpieces for the ballet stage. Collaborating with dance companies and choreographers can create powerful and exciting artistic possibilities for composers, and is a fantastic way to bring the music of today to new audiences. Here at Schott we support this kind of collaboration whole-heartedly.

Finally, I would just like to say that I am delighted to be writing this introduction as the newest member of the Schott team, having joined as Creative Director, London earlier this year. It is wonderful to be working with this team of colleagues around the world, and on behalf of so many of the great composers of the 20th century, of today and of the future! As my predecessor Sally Groves always says, ‘it’s not about us, it’s about the music’, and in that spirit I hope you will enjoy getting to know some of the works featured in this issue of schott aktuell.

Traditionell ist das Genre Ballett sehr stark bei Schott vertreten. Neben den Meisterwerken von Igor Strawinsky (L’Oiseau de feu, Jeu de cartes und Scènes de Ballet) finden sich zahlreiche weitere Klassiker des Tanztheaters in unserem Katalog. Aber auch für die Verbreitung zeitgenössischer Orchester- und Kammermusik bietet die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Komponisten, Tanzensembles und Choreographen immer wieder faszinierende Möglichkeiten.

Mit diesem Editorial stelle ich mich Ihnen als jüngstes Mitglied der Schott-Familie vor: Seit Anfang des Jahres bin ich als Nachfolger von Sally Groves Creative Director im Londoner Büro. Ich freue mich sehr darauf, als Teil eines internationalen Teams für die Komponisten des Hauses Schott zu arbeiten. Wie meine Vorgängerin Sally Groves zu sagen pflegt: „Es geht nicht um uns, es geht um die Musik!“ In diesem Sinne wünsche ich Ihnen viel Freude bei dieser schott aktuell Ausgabe.

11th Floor ist nach 2, Amjad und Dido and Orfeo meine vierte Zusammenarbeit mit dem kanadischen Choreographen Édouard Lock. Bei den ersten drei Werken erweiterte ich teilweise sehr kleine Fragmente bestehender Musik zu längeren Stücken, die dadurch eine Folge von Tänzen ergaben. In 2 benutzte ich verstärkte Cembalos und Musik von Frescobaldi. Amjad verarbeitete charakteristische Motive von Tschaikowsky und in Dido and Orfeo wählte ich Fragmente aus Opern von Purcell und Gluck. Bei 11th Floor hat mich kein bestimmter Komponist, sondern ein Genre inspiriert: der „film noir“ der 1940er und 50er Jahre. Gavin Bryars

Gavin Bryars This is my fourth collaboration with the Canadian choreographer Édouard Lock. For the three previous works, I’ve expanded fragments of existing music, sometime extremely small ones, into longer works that together make a sequence of dances. The first, 2, was for amplified harpsichords based on Frescobaldi; the second, Amjad, took iconic moments from Tchaikovsky; and the third, Dido and Orfeo, reworks fragments from operas by Purcell and Gluck. With the new ballet however, the musical references are to a genre rather than a particular composer: ‘film noir’ from the 1940s and 50s.

Dieses abendfüllende Ballett für das Tanztheater Bielefeld und seinen Chefchoreographen Gregor Zöllig folgt musikalisch und narrativ der Musik von Edvard Grieg zu Henrik Ibsens Schauspiel. Ich bin bei der Komposition den gleichen Weg gegangen wie bei anderen Arbeiten für Ballett, vor allem für Édouard Lock: Ich moduliere und erweitere die Partitur von Grieg durch meine eigene Musik, die sich auf sie bezieht. Es entsteht eine neue Musik, die Grieg aus stilistischen und historischen Gründen so nicht hätte schreiben können.

This full evening ballet for Tanztheater Bielefeld, with choreography by Gregor Zöllig, follows the same musical sequence and narrative as in Edvard Grieg’s music for the Henrik Ibsen play. As with several of my ballet scores, notably those for Édouard Lock, I’ve been asked to model the music for this ballet on Grieg’s score while at the same time creating original music, which, although it alludes to the older music, for stylistic and historical reasons, Grieg could not have written.

The series is based on a mixed septet of low instruments, which is the basis for the next four versions, each with another group of added instruments, where the septet undergoes transformations. In the 5th version, some of the original septet text is retained, as well as some parts of Winter Songs IV, but underneath

these old remnants a new archaeological layer is revealed: a love song.

This is the ‘heart of the piece’. The singers will sing mostly in various forms of unison, their voices creating a ‘composite voice’ which will be androgynous, hallucinatory and unearthly.

Chaya Czernowin Winter Songs V ist die letzte Folge der Winter Song-Serie. Basis der Serie ist ein gemischtes Septett tiefer Instrumente. In den ersten vier Teilen tritt jeweils ein anderes Instrument hinzu und verändert die Zusammensetzung des Septetts. In der fünften Version werden einige Instrumente des Basis-Septetts und Elemente aus Winter Songs IV beibehalten, jedoch durch eine neue archäologische Schicht erweitert: ein Liebeslied als „Herzstück”. Die Sänger singen überwiegend in verschiedenen Arten von unisono und schaffen so eine „kombinierte Stimme”, die androgyn halluzinatorisch und unirdisch ist. Chaya Czernowin

Tone appears and vanishes into space in every moment.

Each tone involves silence inside of itself by nature. The repetition of the birth and death of tones is produced by Pneuma (wind – breath – spirit). The harp represents the human (shaman), while the orchestra represents nature. The song of the harp is born from the breath of the wind and is resonant with the orchestra, then fades away. Finding out and listening to the process was how I composed Aeolus. I dedicate this work to Naoko Yoshino and Robin Ticciati.

Ich versuche, das musikalische Universum der östlichen Musik mit westlichen Instrumenten zu erzeugen. Jeden Moment taucht ein Ton auf und verschwindet wieder im Raum. Jeder Ton trägt dabei von Natur aus Stille in sich. Die stetige Wiederholung von Geburt und Tod der Töne wird vom Pneuma (Wind – Atem – Geist) produziert. Die Harfe repräsentiert den Menschen (den Schamanen), während das Orchester die Natur darstellt. Das Lied der Harfe wird vom Atem des Windes geboren und findet seine Resonanz im Orchester, bevor es allmählich verklingt. Ich komponierte Aeolus, um diesen Prozess durch genaues Hinhören zu erfahren und widme dieses Werk Naoko Yoshino und RoToshio Hosokawa bin Ticciati.

has been referred to as a kind of ‘litany of praise’ and the second movement becomes the litany, with the clarinet acting as ‘Vox Dei’, the voice of God. The third movement returns to the musical subject matter of the first, this time with the bass clarinet taking on the virtuosic role.

Das dreisätzige Stück Howl ist vom gleichnamigen Gedicht von Allen Ginsberg inspiriert. Dabei beeinflussen weniger der Inhalt als vielmehr die langen lyrischen Sequenzen des Gedichts das Werk. Sie werden von der Klarinette imitiert, wobei die Streicher eine aktive Untermalung dagegensetzen. Das Gedicht wurde als eine „Litanei von Lobgesängen” beschrieben, was im zweiten Satz durch die Klarinette als „Vox Dei” (die Stimme Gottes) ausgedrückt wird. Der dritte Satz kehrt zum musikalischen Thema des ersten Satzes zurück, wobei jetzt die Bassklarinette den virtuosen Part übernimmt.

The title …called dusk III is a reference to the final line of the short story ‘Lessness’ by Samuel Beckett: ‘Figment dawn dispeller of figments and the other called dusk.’ In the work several levels of music are independently subjected to a process of variation and simultaneously linked together to form a whole.

Cuts from one to another and seamless merges invite sections to enter into dialogue with each other or transform themselves by adopting characteristics from one another.

Der Titel …called dusk III bezieht sich auf den letzten Satz des Textes „Lessness“ („Losigkeit“) von Samuel Beckett: „Figment dawn dispeller of figments and the other called dusk.“ [„Schimäre die Dämmerung die Schimären vertreibt und die andere Schummer genannte.“] Sieben Gestaltebenen durchlaufen jeweils für sich einen Prozess der Variantenbildung und verbinden sich gleichzeitig untereinander zu einer Gesamtform, in deren Verlauf sie hart gegeneinander geschnitten werden oder bruchlos ineinander übergehen, im schnellen Wechsel miteinander dialogisieren oder sich verwandeln, indem sie Eigenschaften voneinander annehmen.

Piano, in this composition, serves as the ‘brush’, and the percussion quartet, the ‘ink’. Following earlier works such as Brush-Stroke, Aural Hypothesis and Harp Concerto, Inkscape continues to explore the relationship between ink painting, calligraphy and composition.

Lei Liang Inkscape greift zwei Elemente auf, die in der traditionellen asiatischen Landschaftsmalerei in engem Wechselverhältnis stehen: Pinsel und Tusche. Das Klavier ist hier der Pinsel und das Schlagzeug-Quartett die Tusche. Wie schon in den früheren Kompositionen Brush-Stroke, Aural Hypothesis und Harp Concerto setzt Inkscape die Erforschung der Beziehung zwischen Tuschmalerei, Kalligraphie und Komposition fort.

The concept is based on the attempt to make instruments sound alike, or to imitate the sound of another instrument. Thus, the piece’s ‘soundscape’ will be a collection of similarities in which differences always show through. The title refers to an early attempt at a constructed ‘world language’, the Volapük language, with its idea of overcoming differences by standardisation. In this sense, my piece will deal with the ambiguity of assimilating versus accepting, or even emphasising, differences.

Benjamin Schweitzer In volapük ist das Orchester ein „Kontinent“: Jede Gruppe steht für Regionen mit charakteristischen Eigenschaften. Zwischen den Klängen der Instrumente werden Ähnlichkeiten hergestellt oder für bestimmte Instrumente charakteristische Gesten durch andere imitiert. Durch das Stück rotieren Motive, die auf einfachen Grundelementen basieren. Der Titel bezieht sich auf einen der ersten Versuche einer konstruierten „Weltsprache“, deren Grundgedanke es war, Differenzen durch Standardisierung zu überwinden. In diesem Sinn analysiert diese Komposition Assimilation, Akzeptanz oder Betonung von Unterschieden.

Carolin Widmann erhält Schneider-Schott-Musikpreis Mainz 2014 This year’s Schneider-Schott Music Prize Mainz will be awarded to the violinist Carolin Widmann. The award of 15,000 EUR will be presented during a concert with the Staatsorchester Mainz conducted by Hermann Bäumer at the Staatstheater Mainz on 11 November 2014.

Der diesjährige Schneider-SchottMusikpreis Mainz geht an die Geigerin Carolin Widmann. Die mit 15.000 Euro dotierte Auszeichnung wird am 11. November 2014 in einem Konzert mit dem Staatsorchester Mainz unter Leitung von Hermann Bäumer im Mainzer Staatstheater verliehen.

The prize, donated by the music publisher Heinz Schneider-Schott in 1986, goes this year to an artist who has based her international career and reputation on the interpretation of contemporary music right from the beginning. In her recitals (she is currently Artist in Residence at the Alte Oper Frankfurt), she regularly presents works by living composers in exquisite performances as soloist, chamber musician and together with renowned orchestras and conductors. The jury commented: ‘Many significant works from recent musical history have only become well known to wider audiences thanks to her regular performances and incomparable interpretations, for example compositions by Morton Feldman and György Kurtág. A number of composers have written works specifically for her such as Wolfgang Rihm, Salvatore Sciarrino, Matthias Pintscher and most recently Rebecca Saunders. Her playing combines consummate passion and subtlety, simultaneously projecting the structural details and emotions of a composition, thereby exploiting the contrasting extremes of intense restraint and resilient vigour.’

In ihren Konzerten (aktuell als Artist in Residence der Alten Oper Frankfurt) präsentiert sie regelmäßig Werke lebender Komponisten auf höchstem Niveau, als Solistin, Kammermusikerin oder in Zusammenarbeit mit großen Orchestern und Dirigenten.

In der Jurybegründung heißt es: „Bedeutende Werke der jüngeren Musikgeschichte wurden erst durch ihre regelmäßigen Aufführungen und ihre unvergleichlichen Interpretationen einem breiten Publikum bekannt, darunter solche von Morton Feldman und György Kurtág. Mehrere Komponisten haben Stücke für sie geschrieben, etwa Wolfgang Rihm, Salvatore Sciarrino, Matthias Pintscher und zuletzt Rebecca Saunders.

The 1st of October 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Ernst Toch who called himself 'the world's most forgotten composer of the 20th century' several years after receiving the Grammy Award. After the boycott of his works by the Nazi regime, Toch actually could not continue the successes he had achieved in the Weimar Republic where he had had a significant influence on the musical scene. However, his compositional œuvre has not fallen completely into oblivion: His children’s opera Die Prinzessin auf der Erbse [The Princess and the Pea], with its combination of wonderfully poetic moments and brash jazzy spirit, has enthralled audiences in numerous stage productions over the past few years. On 22 April 2015, we will have the opportunity to hear his 1925 Cello Concerto performed by Wolfgang Hentrich and the Dresdner Kammerorchester at the Deutsches Hygienemuseum in Dresden.

Ernst Toch, dessen Todestag sich am 1. Oktober zum 50. Mal jährt, bezeichnete sich einige Jahre nach Erhalt des Grammy Awards als „the worlds most forgotten composer of the 20th century“. An seine Erfolge zur Zeit der Weimarer Republik, deren Musikleben er wesentlich mitprägte, konnte Toch nach dem Boykott seiner Werke durch das Nazi-Regime tatsächlich nicht mehr anknüpfen. In völlige Vergessenheit geraten ist sein kompositorisches Schaffen jedoch keineswegs: Allein seine Kinderoper Die Prinzessin auf der Erbse mit ihrer spannenden Mischung aus wunderbar poetischen Momenten und jazzig-frechem Esprit hat in den letzten Jahren zahlreiche Zuhörer bei vielen Bühnenproduktionen begeistert. Am 22. April des kommenden Jahres bietet sich die Gelegenheit, sein 1925 entstandenes Konzert für Violoncello und Orchester mit dem Dresdner Kammerorchester und Wolfgang Hentrich im Deutschen Hygienemuseum Dresden zu hören.

oth the Staatsoper Berlin and the Staatstheater Mainz have programmed new productions of Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s opera Simplicius Simplicissimus towards the beginning of their 2014/2015 season and a look at the subject matter reveals the reason for this. In the opera, Hartmann interlinks the Baroque plot with experiences from the First World War that we commemorate in this centenary year.

You can experience an operatic double bill at the Theater Heidelberg: oneact works by Christian Jost (the comical and ironical Death Knocks) and Mark-Anthony Turnage (the painfully-tragic Twice Through the Heart) are performed together in a single evening for the first time.

n der noch jungen Spielzeit 2014/2015 haben wie auf ein geheimes Zeichen hin sowohl die Staatsoper Berlin als auch das Staatstheater Mainz Premieren von Karl Amadeus Hartmanns Simplicius Simplicissimus angesetzt. Der Anlass wird bei genauerer Betrachtung des Werks offenbar: Hartmann verbindet den barocken Stoff mit den Erfahrungen des Ersten Weltkriegs, an dessen Ausbruch wir uns im Jahr 2014 erinnern.

Ein Opern-Doppelpack ist am Theater Heidelberg zu sehen: Die Einakter von Christian Jost (komisch-ironisch: Death Knocks) und Mark-Anthony Turnage (schmerzlich-tragisch: Twice Through the Heart) begegnen sich zum ersten Mal im Rahmen eines Abends.

he world premières of two different ballets by Gavin Bryars sparked the idea to present all Schott works created in response to commissions by leading international choreographers and dance companies since 2004.

Within this time frame, Bryars has completed six works for dance – an impressive demonstration of his place in the international dance scene. The three ballets by Elisabeth Naske provide attractive opportunities to introduce young audiences to the fascinating world of ballet. Under the headings ‘Dance Classics’ and ‘Choreographers’ Favourites’, we present works which have long been established in the ballet repertoire.

I was given a list of pieces from the ballet suites and asked if I could take this music and restructure it, while retaining the essence of the

original music. My aim was to find a balance between providing a direct and recognizable reference to the Tchaikovsky source and my own compositional idiom. Gavin Bryars Édouard Lock hatte die Idee, ikonographische Momente aus „Schwanensee“ und „Dornröschen“ in neuem, zeitgenössischen musikalischen Gewand mit der Kompanie La La La Human Steps zu präsentieren. Gavin Bryars berichtet: „Lock gab mir eine Liste mit Teilen der Ballettsuiten von Tschaikowsky und fragte, ob ich diese Fragmente nehmen und neu arrangieren könnte, ohne dabei das Wesen der ursprünglichen Musik zu verändern. Mein Ziel war es, einen hörbaren Bezug zu Tschaikowsky herzustellen und gleichzeitig meine musikalische Sprache zu verwenden.“

Since then, the ballet has been performed by the Dresden Semperoper Ballet and Holland’s Het Nationale Ballet.

When Dawson was approached by the Royal Ballet of Flanders to create a new work to mark the company’s 40th anniversary, Bryars was the

natural choice of composer. The resulting ballet, The Third Light, combines Bryars’ fluidity and sense of line with the grace and elegance of Dawson’s choreography.

Zum ersten Mal verwendete David Dawson Musik von Gavin Bryars (das String Quartet No. 3) in seinem Ballett „Reverence“, das er 2005 für das St. Petersburger Mariinsky Ballett schuf. Danach wurde „Reverence“ vom Dresden Semperoper Ballett und beim Het Nationale Ballet in Holland aufgeführt. Als Dawson vom Royal Ballet of Flanders den Auftrag für ein neues Stück zum 40-jährigen Bestehen der Kompanie bekam, fiel die Wahl für die Musik sofort wieder auf den englischen Komponisten.

The Third Light ist eine gelungene Verbindung von Bryars’ Musik für Solo-Violine und zwölf tiefe Streicher und Dawsons eleganter choreographischer Handschrift.

Pneuma follows a number of successful collaborations between Gavin Bryars and Carolyn Carlson. The music gains its seven-part structure from the extracts of French philosopher Gaston Bachelard’s ‘Air and Dreams’ that form the central ideas of the work. A rich, dark sonority is achieved in the orchestra with the omission of violins, flutes and oboes, and an improvisational turntable part, written for frequent collaborator Philip Jeck, contributes to the distinct soundworld typical of Bryars’ music.

Steve Martland This work presents a form of cultural dialogue, bringing ancient Chinese love songs together with modern American poetry, and an European choir with a drumming ensemble that takes its inspiration from Buddhism, whose members are simultaneously dancers, singers and performers. Western polyphony is juxtaposed by the sound of Asian gongs and giant drums with diameters of two meters, played by dancers according to a tradition originating many thousands of years ago. This mixture creates a sound unlike any other as well as an innovative theatrical art in which two contrasting traditions are unified in harmony.

With Ouroboros Elisabeth Naske tells the story of the creation of our world as a thrilling music and dance performance. The unusual title stands for a symbol found in many ancient cultures: a snake biting its own tail and thus forming a close cycle. It is a symbol of eternity, of the world and the universe. The music takes this theme up by starting with lingering motives and developing them to more and more complex structures, thus illustrating the creation of our world.

In Ouroboros erzählt Elisabeth Naske die Entstehung der Erde. Der ungewöhnliche Name bezeichnet ein Symbol, das sich in vielen Kulturen der Antike findet: eine Schlange, die sich in den Schwanz beißt und einen Kreis bildet. Es ist ein Zeichen für die stetige Wiederkehr des Gleichen, für die Ewigkeit des Universums. The pantomime artists Wolfram von Bodecker and Alexander Neander developed a story together with Lionel Ménard, in which a boy gets to know the book thanks to his father.

During the night the characters of the book come alive, the boy turns into Sancho Pansa whereas Don Quichotte strangely resembles his father. They experience poetic and fantastic adventures and in the end it is hard to say whether it was a dream or whether it was real.

Elisabeth Naske Als die European Concert Hall Organization (ECHO) mich um ein Werk für Kinder zwischen 5-12 Jahren bat, schlug ich Don Quichotte vor. Die Pantomimen Wolfram von Bodecker und Alexander Neander entwickelten mit Lionel Ménard eine Geschichte um einen kleinen Jungen, der durch seinen Vater das Buch von Don Quichotte kennen lernt. Nachts erwachen die Figuren des Buches zum Leben: Der Junge verwandelt sich in Sancho Pansa, der Vater wird zu Don Quichotte.

Beide erleben poetische und fantastische Abenteuer, und am Schluss ist kaum zu unterscheiden, ob das Erlebte Traum oder Wirklichkeit war.

Im Auftrag von Mozart-two-6 für das Tanzquartier Wien brachte Fazıl Say den Wiener Komponisten Mozart in seine türkische Heimat an den Strand der antiken Stadt Patara.

Das Variationenthema der berühmten A-Dur-Klaviersonate KV 331 verarbeitet Say in Patara zu einer groß angelegten szenischen Rhapsodie, die den Stimmungen der Landschaft nachsinnt. Es entsteht eine Reihe von Klangszenarien, die beim Hörer Märchenhaftes, Orientalisches und Kultisches evozieren.

While not specifically programmatic, I hope that the music may express some understanding of the patients as well as the sense of nostalgia, anger and longing they felt for their stolen past.

Tobias Picker Die Inspiration für Awakenings fand ich in der kunstvollen und faszinierenden Prosa Oliver Sacks’, vor allem in den Beschreibungen der einzigartigen und tragischen Schicksale seiner Patienten. Sein Buch Awakenings ist als eine Reihe von Fallstudien und Fußnoten angelegt.

Diese Struktur ist in der musikalischen Form in der Partitur wiederzuerkennen. Es ist kein unbedingt programmatisches Stück; trotzdem hoffe ich, dass die Musik ein gewisses Verständnis für die Patienten auszudrücken vermag und für ihre Gefühle von Wehmut, Wut und Sehnsucht angesichts ihrer geraubten Vergangenheit.

Andrée’s expedition has parallels with core characteristics of dance: levitation, elevation and the attempt to overcome gravity which ultimately wins. The title is an allusion to the final entry in Andrée’s expedition logbook: ‘nach Hause 7 Uhr morgens’ [‘going home at 7 o’ clock in the morning’]. nach Hause is based on the concept of a performance as an ‘expedition’. The work is a cycle spanning from preparation right up to ultimate failure. The climax is reached with a ‘freeze’: a state of absolute motionlessness.

Der Flug rückt Andrées Expedition an Kernaspekte des Tanzes: Schweben, Elevation, der Versuch, der Schwerkraft zu entkommen, die doch stärker bleibt. Der Titel zitiert die letzte Zeile aus Andrées Expeditionstagebuch: „nach Hause 7 Uhr morgens.“ nach Hause geht von der Idee einer Aufführung als „Expedition“ aus und führt zyklisch von den Vorbereitungen bis zum Scheitern. Das „Einfrieren“, ein Zustand absoluter Bewegungslosigkeit, bildet den HöheBenjamin Schweitzer punkt.

In the Japanese composer’s music, every single note appears to have been repeatedly retouched by minute brush strokes – the resulting sounds form from relentless transformation rooted in cyclic processes of growth and decay. In the compositions presented on this CD, solo instruments and string quartet create a fluctuating sound world blending sonic ideas from Europe and Asia.

Toshio Hosokawas Affinität zur fernöstlichen Schriftkunst ist die wohl prominenteste Verbindung seiner kompositorischen Ästhetik mit den traditionellen japanischen Künsten und den Prinzipien asiatischer Philosophie. So scheint es in der Musik des Japaners keinen Ton zu geben, der nicht unaufhörlich wie ein Pinselstrich modifiziert würde – alles Klingende ist Ergebnis unablässigen Wandels, eingebunden in zyklische Prozesse des Werdens und Vergehens. In many of his works, Schneider makes creative reference to the typical stylistic idiom of composers from past eras and sometimes even entire musical trends. In effect, his compositions are an inspired convergence of cultural layers and a subjective commentary of existing forms and models. hough George Gershwin and choreographer George Balanchine had arranged to work together on Samuel Goldwyn’s The Goldwyn Follies in 1937, the composer’s sudden death put their collaboration on hold. It was not until thirty-three years later that a project joining the two creative minds would come to fruition in the form of the ballet suite Who cares?.

With Balanchine’s choreography and thoughtful selection of musical numbers, the work evokes the exuberance of life in New York, with a sound and style that is both thrilling and distinctly American.

Adapted and orchestrated by Hershy Kay in 1970, Who cares? comprises 17 of Gershwin’s classic Broadway songs composed between 1924 and 1931, including the beloved musical numbers ‘S Wonderful, Embraceable You, I Got Rhythm and The Man I Love. Though first performed with only costumes and lighting design, Who cares? has since received acclaimed performances of all sizes by companies worldwide, from elaborate stage design to performances in concert.

eorge Gershwin und der Choreograph George Balanchine hatten 1937 geplant, zusammen an Samuel Goldwyns Filmmusical The Goldwyn Follies zu arbeiten. Diese Zusammenarbeit wurde jedoch durch den plötzlichen Tod des Komponisten verhindert. Erst 33 Jahre nach Gershwins Tod sollte das Vorhaben der beiden Künstler Früchte tragen. Balanchines Choreographie und die gut durchdachte Musikauswahl des Werkes ist in Stil und Klang unverkennbar amerikanisch und fängt den überbordenden Lebensstil der Stadt New York musikalisch ein.

Bearbeitet und orchestriert von Hershy Kay kombiniert die Ballettsuite Who cares? insgesamt 17 Broadway-Klassiker Gerswhins, die in den Jahren von 1924 bis 1931 entstanden, so zum Beispiel ‘S Wonderful, Embraceable You, I Got Rhythm und The Man I Love. Während bei der Uraufführung nur Kostüme und Licht eingesetzt wurden, gehört Who cares? heute weltweit zum Ballettkanon und erfreut sich regelmäßiger, sowohl opulenter szenischer als auch konzertanter Aufführungen.
