A lacuna in time when one looks around, noticing the dust – grains slowly floating in the last ray of sun still lingering through the window …

The piece peels away layer after layer of this notion – in a progression of expectation and memory. But is someone waiting at all? Is someone there at all or is everything and everyone gone already and only the sun ray still lingers through the window, in place which has been long abandoned, deserted, forgotten …

The orchestra is divided into several groups, with the guitar closely associated with the duo of piano and harp, and the first violin.

We can find it in traditional Indian percussion, and in jazz when musicians accompany their play with ‘Sprechgesang’.

This piece goes the opposite way: It begins with the percussionist speaking nonsensically, the emphasis on the rhythm, which he then passes on to his instrument. Like the pure, childish joy of repeating the same word in a different tune, the soloist teaches his instrument to speak until the drums start to talk themselves. The work was inspired by a poem by Sándor Weöres, where each sentence has a more complex form than the one before. Rhythms form words, words form sentences, and sentences create a narrative.’

(Ann-yi Bingöl) „Zu trommeln und dabei zu sprechen ist nichts Neues. Man findet es in der indischen Perkussion und bei Jazzmusikern, die ihr Spiel mit Sprechgesang begleiten. Dieses Stück geht den umgekehrten Weg und lässt den Schlagzeuger anfangs sinnfreie Texte sprechen. Wichtig ist der Textrhythmus, den er im Laufe des ersten Satzes auf seine Instrumente überträgt. Wie ein Kind voll Vergnügen das gleiche Wort in verschiedenen Melodien wiederholt, so lehrt der Solist seine Instrumente das Sprechen, bis die Trommeln selbst zu plaudern beginnen. might have happened if our culture chose Lilith, Adam’s first wife, and not Eve, to be the ancestress of mankind.

In the new opera, Lilith’s intentions determine the course of events. The story promises a new beginning for everyone in Paradise – but, as the title suggests, this won’t be the same Paradise as the one they left.

Nach der Uraufführung von Die Tragödie des Teufels (2010) entschloss sich Peter Eötvös, das Werk zu bearbeiten und eine neue Oper zu schreiben, die die Handlung des Ausgangswerks neu deutet. War in Die Tragödie des Teufels Luzifer die Hauptperson, so fokussiert Paradise Reloaded die Figur der Lilith. Für Eötvös steht die Frage im Zentrum, was geschehen wäre, wenn unsere abendländische Kultur Adams erste Frau Lilith und nicht Eva zur Ahnfrau der Menschheit erwählt hätte.

Abandoning the two outer movements, he created a new version based on the remaining central movement, which he had originally given the programmatic title Im Schilf. Trauerzug und Bacchanale [In the reeds. Funeral procession and bacchanal]. The movement took its inspiration from a Walt Whitman poem: an impression of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Hindemith did away with this title in the 1921 version and divided the movement into two sections, expanding each into a new full movement.

After the removal of the outer movements from the 1919 Sonata, the original piano part was lost completely. Now, composer and pianist Fazil Say has set himself the delightful challenge of reconstructing the piano accompaniment on the basis of the cello part and the structure of the surviving central movement. Say will undertake the piano part in the first performance.

In der Neufassung von 1921 entfernte Hindemith den Satztitel und formte aus dem zweiten Satz zwei Teile, denen er zwei weitere, neu komponierte voran stellte. Die Klavierstimme der ursprünglichen Ecksätze ging verloren.

Der Komponist und Pianist Fazil Say hat sich nun der reizvollen Herausforderung gestellt, den Kavierpart auf Grundlage der Cellostimme und der Anlage des erhaltenen Mittelsatzes zu rekonstruieren. Er wird die Uraufführung selbst am Klavier spielen.

by Hermann Hesse’s famous poem Im Nebel. The trumpet represents man, and the orchestra represents nature and the mist that surrounds it. In the vast, blind world, the trumpeter walks alone; then sings to the world while keeping to itself the memories of the glorious past and the intense storm. The orchestral instruments draw various soft, curved lines, like those from Eastern writings. The soloist’s trumpet eventually lets itself fade into the world of mist; simultaneously confronting and reconciling with the world.

Toshio Hosokawa Hermann Hesses berühmtes Gedicht Im Nebel inspirierte mich zu diesem Trompetenkonzert. Die Trompete steht für den Menschen, das Orchester symbolisiert die Natur und das Geheimnisvolle, das sie umgibt. Der Trompeter durchstreift einsam die blinde, unermessliche Natur; während er sein Lied singt, bewahrt er die Erinnerungen an die ruhmreiche Vergangenheit und an die Gewalt des Sturms. Das Orchester zeichnet weiche Linien, ähnlich denen östlicher Kalligraphie. Die Solotrompete verschmilzt mit der Sphäre des Geheimnisvollen; sie stellt sich der Welt und versöhnt sich zugleich mit ihr.

Trio for violin, violoncello and piano (2013) Commissioned by Fondation BBVA 11’ • 22 Sep 2013 · Strasbourg (F) Salle de la Bourse Festival Musica 2013 Trío Arbós + 25 Apr 2014 Mannheim (D) This piece is concerned with the world of shaman, which I have been very interested in lately. A shaman is a person who creates a path connecting this world and the underworld. In this trio, the violin represents female, and the cello male.

The instruments play a duo as an extension of the voices of two shamans. The piano is the cosmos and nature. Violin and piano have a ‘Yin and Yang’ relationship, the creation principal of the Taoism cosmos: polar opposites which compliment one another without cancelling each other out, creating perfect harmony.

In diesem Stück beschäftige ich mich mit der Welt der Schamanen, die mich seit kurzem interessiert.

Schamanen finden Wege, unsere Welt mit dem Jenseitigen zu verbinden. In meinem Trio repräsentiert die Geige das weibliche und das Violoncello das männliche Prinzip.

Der Zwiegesang beider Instrumente gleicht dem Gesang zweier Schamanen. Das Klavier steht für den Kosmos und die Natur. Violine und Klavier harmonisieren nach den Regeln von „Yin und Yang”, dem Schöpfungsprinzip des taoistischen Kosmos: Gegensätze, die sich ergänzen, ohne sich aufzuheben und dadurch vollkommene Harmonie schaffen.

Tigran Mansurian attempts to fathom these mysteries – the magical plant with its unique qualities, and the magnificence of ‘material folds’ in Armenian music – in his Ode to the Lotus. The mystic sound of the viola seemed to him the most appropriate tonal medium for this purpose.

Was hat der Lotusblüteneffekt mit den modalen Strukturen und prosodischen Formen der alten geistlichen Musik Armeniens zu tun? I have wanted to write this opera for years. Yes, Stephen King is a master of suspense, but he is also a remarkable reader of human desires and fears. The superb team that San Francisco Opera has assembled allows me to compose a powerful, heart-stopping piece of music theater for a cast of brilliant voices.

Tobias Picker Der Charakter der Dolores Claiborne ist zweifelsohne wie für die Opernbühne geschaffen – sie ist leidenschaftlich, verzweifelt und in sich gefangen. Dolores würde alles tun, um ihre Tochter, von der sie verachtet wird, zu retten. In extreme Situationen getrieben tut sie, was getan werden muss, furchtlos und auf sich allein gestellt.

Seit Jahren wollte ich diese Oper komponieren. Stephen King ist nicht nur ein Meister der Spannung, sondern ein bemerkenswerter Kenner menschlicher Sehnsüchte und Ängste. Aribert Reimann builds his Prolog in the opposite direction of the famous Ninth Symphony: whereas Ludwig van Beethoven ends his Symphony with the choral hymn Ode to Joy, Reimann begins his composition with an a cappella choral movement using lines of poetry which Friedrich Schiller omitted in the later version of his poem, and which were never set to music by Beethoven. In these explicitly political passages, Schiller urges individuals to liberate themselves from the ‘tyrants’ chains’ and to let the ‘lying brood perish’; he pleads with mankind to reconcile friend with foe. Reimann only permits the (string) orchestra to enter at the conciliatory line: ‘The dead, too, should live’.

‘Just before the end of the prologue I have reiterated the first line, ”Escape the tyrants’ chains“, here sung in unison by the entire choir as an urgent appeal in view of all that is taking place in the world today.’

(Aribert Reimann) Aribert Reimann geht in seinem Stück den umgekehrten Weg der berühmten Neunten: Während Ludwig van Beethoven seine Symphonie mit der Chorhymne Ode an die Freude endet, beginnt Reimann sein Stück mit einem a cappella Chorsatz. Er verwendet dabei Gedichtzeilen, die Friedrich Schiller für die spätere Fassung gestrichen hat und die von Beethoven nicht vertont wurden. In diesen explizit politischen Zeilen ruft Schiller dazu auf, sich von „Tyrannenketten“ zu befreien und die „Lügenbrut untergehen“ zu lassen; er appelliert an die Menschheit, Freund und Feind zu versöhnen. Erst zu der versöhnlichen Zeile „Auch die Toten sollen leben“ lässt Reimann das (Streich-) Orchester einsetzen. „Kurz vor Schluss des Prologs habe

From a series of versions of the originals, the whole was assiduously corrected and restored for publication even down to the composer's own staving by Kurt Morgan, Scoremeister to the Zappa Family Trust. ‘I believe in my heart of hearts that someone on the board [of the Philharmonic] said it's about time’, Gail Zappa said. ‘This music was written before our youngest children were even conceived and they have never had a chance to hear this music in a proper concert hall.’ The performance in Los Angeles marks the 10th anniversary of Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Henri Dutilleux 22.1.1916 – 22.5.2013 The international music world has lost one of its major figures with the death of Henri Dutilleux. The French composer Henri Dutilleux, born in Angers in 1916, created a personal and distinctive musical language glowing with tonal originality and visual radiance, with its foundations in the traditions of Maurice Ravel, Albert Roussel and Claude Debussy. Although always intensely aware of the prevailing trends of the second half of the 20th century, he searched for his own individual solutions and his great popularity with audiences, major international musicians such as Anne-Sophie Mutter, Renée Fleming and Sir Simon Rattle confirmed his instincts. Dutilleux was the first composer to utilise a consistent structural principle in which musical themes were not presented in full at the beginning, but instead developed gradually over the progress of a composition: ‘My aim is to permit each individual work to originate as a living and organic entity.’ Dutilleux focused his concentration on essential elements. Reflecting his long and fulfilled musical life shared over many decades with his wife, the pianist Geneviève Joy, he has left behind a highly select œuvre including orchestral works, lieder, ballet scores and chamber music. The team at Schott will remember Henri Dutilleux with great fondness and admiration.

Ein wichtiges Element seines Komponierens war sein erstmals konsequent durchgeführtes Bauprinzip, die musikalischen Themen nicht gleich zu Beginn vorzustellen, sondern erst im Verlauf eines Stücks langsam zu entwickeln. „Es ist mein Ziel, jedes Werk als lebendiges, organisches Ganzes entstehen zu lassen.“ Dutilleux konzentrierte sich unbeirrbar auf das Wesentliche. Der große Erfolg seiner Musik beim Publikum, bei international herausragenden Interpreten wie Anne-Sophie Mutter, Renée Fleming und Sir Simon Rattle sowie die Anerkennung durch die Musikkritik gaben ihm Recht. Nach einem langen, erfüllten Musikerleben, das er über viele Jahrzehnte mit seiner Frau, der 2009 verstorbenen Pianistin Geneviève Joy, teilte, hinterlässt er ein konzentriertes Œuvre aus Orchesterwerken, Liedkompositionen, Ballett- und Kammermusik. Das Kollegium von Schott wird Henri Dutilleux voller Bewunderung und Zuneigung in Erinnerung behalten.

Steve Martland 10.10.1954 – 7.5.2013 Steve Martland had a reputation as an iconoclastic composer who crossed musical boundaries to create a distinctive, edgy sound. But each of his works displays an impressive rigorousness of form and content (Bach was his watchword) which gives his output its tremendous energy and drive. His only orchestral work, Babi Yar, has a profound humanity and optimism in the face of overwhelming horror. And his large ensemble and choral works communicate a delight and playfulness which will draw performers and keep them in the repertoire for many years to come.

We are proud to be the sole publishers of the music of Steve Martland. We will miss his laughter and friendship.

Gerald Barry’s fifth opera is a genuine comic work with a dark heart.

Oscar Wilde’s play is all but perfect in its construction, and Barry’s audacious approach triumphantly confounds all expectations. Barry cuts the text by two thirds and sets the words against their natural rhythms, thus throwing them into a sharper light, amplifying the dark, uncaring humour. Most strikingly, Lady Bracknell is sung by a bass and the composer always imagined her not in drag but in a man’s suit. The musical references range from Beethoven to Schoenberg, all treated with a reckless panache and impish wit, by turns dazzling, startling and charming the audience.

Gerald Barrys fünfte Oper ist ein komisches Werk mit einer dunklen Seite. Oscar Wildes Stück ist von seinem Aufbau her praktisch perfekt, und Barrys kühne Annäherung spielt virtuos mit sämtlichen Erwartungen der Zuschauer.

The story, taut and exacting, reflects the changes and dislocations of the times through four complex yet absolutely recognizable characters, each grappling with their own uneasy feelings that come as the cultural and moral ground beneath them begins to give way. Gender politics, race relations and the role of the church, questions about personal responsibility, doubt, and right and wrong are all brought to bear here. So much in Doubt is about what is unsaid, what is continually running beneath the surface, which I see as an invitation to Douglas J. Cuomo music.

Vier Menschen stehen im Mittelpunkt dieser unerbittlichen Geschichte. Ultimately, Lilith triumphs. Adam recognises her true identity: she was his first wife, created out of the same lump of clay as Adam but banished by God for insisting to live on equal terms with Adam rather than subordinate herself to either him or God. Adam kills Eve and unites himself with Lilith, as ‘No man shall henceforth be created – let us begin a new lineage without delay’. Lucifer remains; his tragedy is the loss of power and the end of the principle of evil.

Although Sierva herself seems unhurt, this is a town where reason and superstition are at war, and soon the talk is not of rabies, but of possession. The young girl finds herself imprisoned in the Convent of St Clare, where the priest Delaura comes to drive out her demons. But soon it is Delaura himself who is possessed, consumed by Love, ‘the most terrible demon of all’. Peter Eötvös and librettist Kornél Hamvai have given each different level of narration its own characteristic language: English is the everyday language of the noblemen, Latin is the language of the church, Spanish is used by Delaura whenever his conversations with Sierva touch on personal feelings, and Yoruba is the secret language of the slaves.

Although the words of Promised End are derived from King Lear, they have been considerably re-arranged to emphasize one aspect of the original text: King Lear and the Earl of Gloucester, men who in their prime committed errors of judgment, bring upon themselves their own tragic destinies. The cast is reduced to nine singers and the opera is scored for wind and brass,

as in a European military band, with strings, guitar, timpani and organ.

Hosokawa’s concept was to breath new life into the genre of opera using Japanese dramaturgy that is completely different to Western principles. ‘I have chosen Matsukaze, one of Zeami’s finest works, as a starting point, reconstructed its libretto, composed music, and by means of new stage directions, tried to create a new opera based on a No- play which lives in our own time.’ (Toshio Hosokawa) Toshio Hosokawas dritte Oper Matsukaze basiert auf dem gleichnamigen No--Theaterstück von Zeami, einem der Pioniere des traditionellen japanischen Theaters.

When I read The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe, it reminded me of a Japanese No- play. A view of the world in No- theatre is not anthropocentric: Some of the main characters are animals and plants, and some are unearthly spirits. Poe describes the process of the collapse of the modern rational world, as a consequence of an invasion of that world by a strange animal – a raven – which inhabits another world. I considered this poem as a story of Noand expressed it in the form of a monodrama with mezzo-soprano and ensemble.

Als ich The Raven von Edgar Allan Poe las, erinnerte es mich an japanische No--Theaterstücke. Deren Blick auf die Welt ist nicht anthropozentrisch; einige der Hauptcharaktere im No- sind vielmehr Tiere und Pflanzen, andere sind unirdische Geister. Poe beschreibt den Prozess des Zusammenbruchs der modernen Welt als Konsequenz einer „Invasion” dieser Welt durch ein seltsames Tier, das in einer anderen Dimension lebt – den Raben. Ich habe für die Vertonung dieses Gedichts die dem No--Theater nahe Form des Monodrams für Mezzosopran und Ensemble gewählt.

The opera celebrated the 50th anniversary of the archaeological exploration of Sardis.

Miriam Seidels Libretto zu Kamran Ince’s Oper Judgment of Midas basiert auf Motiven aus Ovids Metamorphosen und schildert den musikalischen Wettstreit zwischen den Göttern Pan und Apollo, die König Midas als Schiedsrichter um Entscheidung darüber baten, wer von ihnen der beste Musiker sei. Chang’s stories often centre around fascinating female protagonists, and the background to these stories – mainly set in Shanghai or Hong Kong during the 1930s to 1940s – provides plenty of scope for the creation of a suspensionpacked musical work for the stage.

Christian Jost Meine Kammeroper Heart Sutra basiert auf der gleichnamigen Kurzgeschichte der Schriftstellerin Eileen Chang und ist eine Liebesgeschichte aus dem Shanghai der 30er Jahre. In ihren Erzählungen lotet Chang häufig faszinierende Frauengestalten aus. Der Zauber ihrer meist im Shanghai oder Hong Kong der 30er/40er Jahre angesiedelten Geschichten bietet spannungsgeladenen Raum für eine musikdramatische Umsetzung.

Since there is no moral authority, the villagers take the investigation into their own hands and rumours immediately begin to circulate. One is that Adela was involved with the young landlord Ramón, which he does not deny. The alleged killer is found very quickly: The travelling merchant Gitano is said to have been seen with a woman. Ramón declares himself willing to kill him in order to avenge the murder of his supposed lover.

Christian Jost’s music paints a psychological portrait of the emotional depths of the characters, which inevitably draw them into the maelstrom of tragic entanglement.

In einem mexikanischen Dorf wird das Mädchen Adela ermordet aufgefunden. Die Dorfbewohner nehmen die Ermittlungen selbst in die Hand, da sonst keine moralische Instanz vorhanden ist. As well as adding two new scenes to the first act, Penderecki has slightly shortened the beginning of the second act, reduced the woodwind and brass instrumentation and altered the percussion section throughout the work, and made small changes to vocal roles. He has also replaced numerous previously aleatoric passages with fixed rhythmic ones written out in full notation.

Für die neue Produktion der Königlichen Oper in Kopenhagen hat Krzysztof Penderecki seine 1968/69 komponierte Oper umfassend revidiert. The scenes suggest a chronological outline of his later years; a transition from the ’dark’ environment of his early years, full of positive enthusiasms amid the dark surroundings, to the darkening of his inner light amid the brightness of the South.

Bernard Rands Oper in zwei Akten basiert auf Briefen Vincent van Goghs. Das Stück ist eine Folge von „tableaux“. The events of this opera are propelled by two factors: first by Medea’s feeling of otherness along with her rejection by society, which drives her into catastrophe and infanticide, and second by the restitution of rights. Medea, whose ultimate pledge on her life is the Golden Fleece, returns the banner stolen

by Jason to its rightful location in Delphi at the end of the opera. The concentration on the psychological drama of the lead figure is also expressed in the opera’s compositional style. Here, Aribert Reimann returns to an intense chamber music style; each detail evolves strictly out of what has gone before.

Das Geschehen in Aribert Reimanns Oper wird von zwei Faktoren vorangetrieben: einerseits von Medeas Andersartigkeit und ihrer Ablehnung durch die Gesellschaft, die sie in die Katastrophe und den Kindermord treibt, und andererseits vom Motiv der Wiederherstellung des Rechts: Medea, deren letztes Lebensunterpfand das goldene Vlies ist, bringt das von Jason geraubte Banner am Schluss der Oper zurück an seinen rechtmäßigen Ort Delphi.

appearance in the tale which also incorporates the Winter Palace, the English court, a burlesque comedy, and tragedy.

Then there is the protagonist of the story, a cross-eyed, uneducated craftsman from Tula ‘with golden hands’.

This figure is a combination of typical aspects of the Russian national character: individualised talent, quick thinking, self-irony, an indifference to life, and a fatal passion for alcohol. This is paired with the eternal Russian theme of authority versus the common people.

Jacob tries to forget by turning inward, losing track of everything and everyone around him. He reads, studies and tries to absorb Platonic thought. A woman (the conscience of humanity) appears and forces him to confront his past, the horror and the pain of his loss and his feelings of guilt for having survived. Subotnick creates a contemporary parable, explicitly leaving out references to a specific time or location.

Morton Subotnicks Kammeroper Jacob’s Room blickt in die Gedankenwelt eines jungen Mannes, der den Verlust seiner Familie verarbeiten muss. Jacob zieht sich in sich selbst zurück und verliert dabei den Kontakt zu den Menschen und Ereignissen um ihn herum. Er liest und studiert vor allem Platons Philosophie. Eine Frau – das personifizierte menschliche Gewissen – erscheint und zwingt ihn, sich seiner schrecklichen Vergangenheit, dem Schmerz seines Verlustes und seinem Schuldgefühl, überlebt zu haben, zu stellen. Subotnick schafft eine abstrakte Parabel, ohne diese in einer konkreten Zeit oder an einem bestimmten Ort spielen zu lassen.

Today, time is the measure of all things; the calculation of everything based on time, or its interchangeable value money, has permeated all aspects of life. As a consequence, it is more relevant now than ever before to reinterpret the existential issues of human relationships and love. This film has provided me with a highly appropriate plot for a new operatic drama.

Warum Lola rennt? Tom Tykwer hat in seinem Film Fragen unserer Zeit so formuliert, dass sie besonders ein jüngeres Publikum in den Bann ziehen. Mir ist ein Aspekt wichtig: die Verletzlichkeit, aber auch Belastbarkeit menschlicher Beziehungen angesichts der rasant ablaufenden Zeit.

Heute ist Zeit das Maß aller Dinge, und die Umrechnung aller Werte in Zeit – und in ihren „Tauschwert“ Geld – durchdringt alle Bereiche des Lebens. Umso mehr stellt sich die existentielle Frage nach den Beziehungen zwischen Menschen, nach der Liebe neu. In diesem Sinne entspricht der Stoff meinen Intentionen für eine neue Operndramaturgie.

Ella and her high-finance husband Stephen rent a place in a holiday home on the coast where Ella discovers a locked room, held for a poet whose work holds a deep fascination for her. Ella’s obsession with the poet grows in parallel with Stephen’s biggest City deal, and the boundaries between her reality and fantasy begin to blur.

This is Huw Watkins’ second opera, the fruit of several years of association with Music Theatre Wales.

Based on a Thomas Hardy short story, David Harsent’s libretto has a clarity to which Watkins responds with a score of Britten-like economy, textured and expressive.

Two figures represent these contrasting principles: Inanna embodies sensuous Babylonian love whereas the figure of the Soul stands for Platonic love. Widmann’s music contains variety, concurrence and disparity of forms, sounds and temporal structures. There is also a high degree of formal design and strict organisation in which the number 7 repeatedly operates as an element for the establishment of order.

Jörg Widmanns erste abendfüllende Oper greift mit humorvollem Sarkasmus in die gesellschaftliche Debatte um Gentechnik und Börsenwahn ein. Auch mit Zitaten aus der Operngeschichte wird gespielt.

Wird Hoffmann in Offenbachs Meisterwerk ein Spiegel vorenthalten, damit er den Verlust seines Spiegelbildes nicht bemerkt, so soll Justine nicht erkennen, dass sie lediglich ein Klon von Patrizia ist, ein Geschäftsobjekt. Den Prozess der Persönlichkeitsentwicklung von Justine und ihren Zusammenbruch kommentiert Widmann mit einer Musik, die viele berückende Momente hat, aber immer wieder auch ins Slapstickhafte kippen kann, unterstützt von einem durchsichtig besetzten Kammerorchester.

Henze composed his first symphonic work in 1947 during his studies in Heidelberg. Having arranged the symphony for chamber orchestra in 1963, he undertook a new revision of the work in 1991. The 6th Symphony was composed during the 1960s and represents a significant milestone in Henze’s artistic development. The composition displays the profound influence of Henze’s commitment to the political left, solidarity with the student movement, and his sympathetic interest in international liberation movements.

Mit der Einspielung der 1. Sinfonie und der Sinfonia n. 6 ergänzt das Label WERGO seine CD-Reihe sämtlicher Sinfonien von Hans Werner Henze. Seinen symphonischen Erstling schrieb Henze 1947 während des Studiums in Heidelberg. Nach einer Umarbeitung für Kammerorchester im Jahr 1963 nahm er 1991 eine erneute Revision vor. Die Sinfonia n. 6 entstand in den sechziger Jahren und ist ein bedeutender Markstein in der künstlerischen Entwicklung Henzes. Sie ist tief von seinem Engagement für die politische Linke, seiner Solidarität mit der Studentenbewegung und seinem anteilnehmenden Interesse an den internationalen Befreiungsbewegungen beeinflusst.

Awards for our composers In late July, Turkish pianist and composer Fazil Say was awarded the Rheingau Music Prize 2013. The jury acknowledged Say's contribution to the world of contemporary music with this honour. Say was also the recipient of the ZMF Honorary Award at the Zelt-Musik-Festival in Freiburg, Germany, where he was described as a ‘political and musical symbolic figure’. On 14 July, Wilfried Hiller was honoured with the Upper Bavarian Cultural Prize for his services to culture. In May, Gerald Barry's opera The Importance of Being Earnest won the 2013 RPS Music Award for Large-Scale Composition. A further music prize in May was awarded to Jörg Widmann: the GEMA ‘Music Author Award’ 2013 in the category of Symphonic Composition, granted according to the motto ‘Authors honour authors’.

Ende Juli wurde der türkische Pianist und Komponist Fazil Say mit dem Rheingau Musik Preis 2013 ausgezeichnet. Mit der Ehrung würdigte die Jury seine Verdienste um das gegenwärtige Musikleben. Außerdem prämierte ihn das Zelt-Musik-Festival mit dem ZMFEhrenpreis. Er sei eine „politische und musikalische Symbolfigur“. Am 14. Juli wurde Wilfried Hiller in Würdigung seiner kulturellen Verdienste mit dem Oberbayerischen Kulturpreis 2013 geehrt. Bereits im Mai gewann Gerald Barrys Oper The Importance of Being Earnest den RPS Music Award in der Kategorie „Large-Scale-Composition“. Ebenfalls im Mai erhielt Jörg Widmann unter dem Motto „Autoren ehren Autoren“ den GEMA-Musikautorenpreis 2013 in der Kategorie „Komposition Sinfonik“.

Ryan Wigglesworth: Daniel R. Lewis Young Composer Fellow The Cleveland Orchestra announced Ryan Wigglesworth as their next Daniel R. Lewis Young Composer Fellow, a two-year post that will begin September 2013. The appointment includes a new commission to be premiered by the Orchestra in the 2014-15 season, as well as the US première of Sternenfall, conducted by Franz WelserMöst in March 2014. Daniel R. Lewis Young Composer Fellows regularly participate in rehearsals, materclasses and educational activities with The Cleveland Orchestra.

Wigglesworth is currently Composer in Residence at English National Opera, and upcoming projects include a song cycle for tenor Mark Padmore, an orchestral work to mark the centenary of Benjamin Britten’s birth for the Aldeburgh Festival, and a full-scale opera for ENO. Ab September 2013 ist Ryan Wigglesworth für zwei Jahre Daniel R. Lewis Young Composer Fellow des Cleveland Orchestra. Neben der Erteilung eines Auftrags an den Komponisten und der Uraufführung des neuen Stücks in der Saison 2014-15 steht die amerikanische Erstaufführung von Sternenfall unter Leitung von Franz WelserMöst im März 2014 auf dem Programm. spectacular event: In prayer in the middle of the night, the nun Susanna overhears the moaning of a maid who is disporting herself with a knave in the convent garden. Sister Klementia admonishes her to become aware of her own corporeality, relating the story of a fellow nun named Beata who was buried alive in a wall of the church as punishment for kissing the figure of the crucified Jesus in a state of erotic-religious ecstasy.

Susanna falls into ever-intensifying mystic raptures, tearing the loincloth off the crucified Jesus. She resists her punishment, ‘erect in inviolate grandeur’ before the sisters who are damning her.

Sancta Susanna follows Hoffnung der Frauen (1919) and Das Nusch-Nuschi (1920) as the third and final of Paul Hindemith’s single-act operas which gained him a reputation as an operatic composer. The music reflects the irresolvable conflict between religious obedience and physical asceticism on the one hand and sexual desire and ecstatic abandonment on the other.

Hindemith depicts the animosity towards matters of a physical nature within the monastic world with an unyielding musical timbre, interspersed, at the moments of Susanna’s emerging sensuality, with outbursts of voluptuous tonal richness reminiscent of Debussy.

in spektakulärer Fall: Die Nonne Susanna wird beim nächtlichen Gebet Zeugin der körperlichen Hingabe einer Magd an ihren Geliebten. Ihre Mitschwester Klementia ermahnt Susanna, sich ihrer eigenen Leiblichkeit bewusst zu sein. Sie berichtet von der Mitschwester Beata, die lebendig eingemauert wurde, weil sie in erotisch-religiöser Ekstase Jesus am Kreuz geküsst hatte. Auch Susanna steigert sich in mystische Verzückung und reißt dem Gekreuzigten das Lendentuch vom Leib. Der sie erwartenden Strafe widersetzt sie sich, „aufgerichtet, in unberührter Hoheit“.

Sancta Susanna war nach Mörder, Hoffnung der Frauen (1919) und Das Nusch-Nuschi (1920) der letzte von drei Einaktern, mit denen der junge Paul Hindemith als Opernkomponist auf sich aufmerksam machte. Die Musik spiegelt den unauflöslichen Konflikt zwischen religiösem Gehorsam und körperlicher Askese auf der einen, sexuellem Verlangen und ekstatischer Hingabe auf der anderen Seite. Für die Leibfeindlichkeit der Klosterwelt findet Hindemith Klänge starrer Einförmigigkeit, in den Momenten von Susannas erwachender Sinnlichkeit bricht eine an Debussy erinnernde üppige Klanglichkeit hervor.
