How often do we raise an eyebrow when the conversation turns toward flute repertoire? The flute may be perhaps one of the most underestimated of western instruments, viola jokes aside. Indeed, this publication has never dedicated an issue to the topic … until now.

Gespräche über das Thema Flötenmusik verlaufen meist nicht besonders enthusiastisch. Die Flöte gehört wohl zu den meist unterschätzten Instrumenten der westlichen Musik – sieht man einmal von Witzen über die Bratsche und ihre Interpreten ab. Und tatsächlich war das Repertoire für Flöte auch noch nie Gegenstand dieses Magazins – das ändern wir jetzt.

The World Première of Huw Watkins’ Flute Concerto (London 23.2) with soloist Adam Walker and the London Symphony Orchestra has put each of the Schott publishing centers in a flute-like state of mind. The flute was no stranger to the party in the Baroque and Classical periods when masters such as C.P.E. Bach, Quantz and Vivaldi wrote frequently for the instrument; Quantz composed over 300 flute concertos.

It’s worth noting that a tremendous variety of new work has entered the flute repertoire in recent times.

Composers such as Penderecki, Nono, Schwantner, Widmann, Beaser, and Hosokawa, among others, have explored the instrument’s unique timbre, each in very different ways. Schwantner’s A Play of Shadows and Beaser’s Song of the Bells are a natural extension of a line from Debussy and Ravel with their colorful impressionistic landscapes while Penderecki and Hosokawa take a different tact putting sonic and technical exploration at the fore. I hope you enjoy exploring our focus on flute music of our time!

Die Uraufführung von Huw Watkins’ Flute Concerto (London, 23.2.) mit dem Solisten Adam Walker und dem London Symphony Orchestra hat uns bewogen, unser Heft diesem Thema zu widmen. In der Musik des Barock und der Klassik ist die Flöte allgegenwärtig. C.P.E. Bach, Quantz und Vivaldi komponierten wiederholt für dieses Instrument; Quantz schrieb sogar mehr als 300 Flötenkonzerte!

In jüngster Zeit wurde das Repertoire durch bemerkenswerte Werke bereichert. Penderecki, Nono, Schwantner, Widmann, Beaser und Hosokawa, um nur einige Namen zu nennen, haben das unverwechselbare Timbre dieses Instruments für sich neu entdeckt. Schwantners A Play of Shadows und Beasers Song of the Bells setzen die Tradition impressionistischer Klangmalerei fort, die wir von Debussy und Ravel kennen. As we ring in 2014, we are delighted to note the 70th birthday of master composer, conductor and educator Peter Eötvös on 2 January. And we eagerly await the World Premières of Hannah Lash’s Three Shades Without Angles (Boston 9.2) and Joseph Schwantner’s Chapel Music (Evanston 9.2), a major new work from Mr. Schwantner’s pen.

Das Jahr 2014 beginnt mit dem 70. Geburtstag des großen Komponisten, Dirigenten und Lehrers Peter Eötvös am 2. Januar. Außerdem sind wir sehr gespannt auf die Uraufführungen von Hannah Lashs Three Shades Without Angels (Boston, 9.2.) und von Joseph Schwantners Chapel Music (Evanston, 9.2.).

Thomlinson and Gerry Wakelin 20’-25’ 3.3.3.3-4.3.2.1-timp.perc-hp.keybdstr(16.14.12.10.8) • 23 Feb 2014 · London (UK) Barbican Hall Adam Walker, flute London Symphony Orchestra Conductor Daniel Harding Huw Watkins’ new Flute Concerto is his second work for Adam Walker, following Capriccio for flute and piano which the two premiered in 2010. Having been awarded funding for a commission by the BorlettiBuitoni Trust, Walker approached Watkins for a second collaboration.

The resulting Concerto, cast in three movements, is built around Walker’s playing. The composer notes especially Walker’s ‘amazing sound and

control of his instrument’, which he constantly had in mind during the composition process. The particular challenges of writing for flute – its shrill high register and the fact that it is easily covered by an orchestra – are deftly handled with delicate orchestration and a pallet of orchestral colours which allow the flute’s sound to come through.

Huw Watkins’ Flute Concerto ist das zweite Werk für Adam Walker nach dem (von beiden 2010 uraufgeführten) Capriccio für Flöte und Klavier.

Unterstützt durch den Borletti-Buitoni Trust, wandte sich Walker zum zweiten Mal mit der Bitte um ein neues Werk an Watkins. Das dreisätzige Concerto nutzt die Eigenarten des Spiels von Walker. Besonders seinen „erstaunlichen Klang und die Kontrolle über sein Instrument“ hatte Watkins bei der Komposition im Kopf. Den Herausforderungen beim Komponieren für Flöte – ihr durchdringendes hohes Register und der Umstand, dass sie sehr leicht vom Orchester zugedeckt wird – begegnet das Werk mit einer delikaten Orchestrierung und einer Farbenpalette, die es der Flöte ermöglicht, klanglich in den Vordergrund zu treten.

The opera begins with a flashback of an Old Man who is one of those saved by the ‘visa of life’. The heroic story of Sugihara was entrusted to a Sakura tree, and its fairy repeatedly sings ‘I will keep on standing still here, patiently, always, no matter what happens’. The Sakura and Sugihara’s name take root in the land, people, and succeeding generations.

Weltkrieg für mehr als 6000 Juden Transitvisa ausstellte und ihnen damit die Flucht ermöglichte. Die Oper beginnt mit der Erinnerung eines alten Mannes, der durch ein solches „Lebensvisum“ gerettet wurde.

Er vertraut die heroische Geschichte von Sugihara einem Sakura-Baum an, dessen Geist immer wieder singt: „Ich werde hier stehen, geduldig, immer, gleich was geschieht.“ Die Wurzeln des Sakura-Baumes und Sugiharas Name durchdringen das Land, die Menschen und alle Generationen.

Kontrapunktische Variationen über die Hirtenweise aus Richard Wagners Tristan und Isolde für zwei Klaviere, op. 70 (2013) Auftragswerk des Piano Duo GrauSchumacher 25’ • 11 Jan 2014 · Dijon (F) Opéra, Grand salon de l’Auditorium GrauSchumacher Piano Duo In 2012, I composed a set of variations (originally for orchestra and subsequently arranged for two pianos in 2013 ) based on one of Wagner’s most inspired and haunting melodies, the ‘alte Hirtenweise’ [old shepherd’s song], an extended cor anglais solo at the start of Act III of Tristan and Isolde. This seemingly simple, yet deceptively complex melody was my starting point for an expansive fantasy in which I explore the potential of the melodic elements for variational development.

The individual motifs are transformed and reconstructed in eight extended movements making frequent use of polyphony and are repeatedly interrupted by the sounding of the original theme. The work concludes with a languid coda at a great distance from the themes of salvation and Liebestod.

Stefan Heucke 2012 schrieb ich ein Variationswerk (zunächst für Orchester, 2013 als Fassung für zwei Klaviere) über eine der eindringlichsten melodischen Eingebungen Wagners, die „alte Hirtenweise“, das große Englischhorn-Solo zu Beginn des dritten Tristan-Aktes.

Diese scheinbar so schlichte und eingängige, dabei höchst komplex und verwickelt gebaute Melodie ist der Ausgangspunkt für eine großräumige Fantasie, die die melodischen Bausteine der Melodie auf ihre Möglichkeiten der entwickelnden Variation hin befragt. Die einzelnen Motive werden zu acht großen, oft polyphon gestalteten Sätzen umgeformt, dabei aber immer wieder vom Erklingen des Originalthemas unterbrochen. Das Stück verklingt in einer ermatteten Coda, weit entfernt von Erlösung und Liebestod.

Eigentlich könnte das, was dem Matrosen Keawe passiert, die Erfüllung aller Träume bedeuten: Er kauft eine Flasche, in der ein Geist wohnt, der dem Flaschenbesitzer jeden Wunsch erfüllt! Aber der Eigentümer der Flasche muss sie vor seinem Tod zu einem billigeren Preis loswerden, sonst landet er in der Hölle. Ob und wie Keawe das gelingt, hat Robert Louis Stevenson, bekannt als Autor der Schatzinsel, in einer Geschichte erzählt, die Wilfried Hiller und Felix Mitterer als Vorlage für ihr vergnügliches und spannendes Singspiel gewählt haben.

Three Shades Without Angles is a piece that plays with the idea of transformation of musical shapes.

When writing this piece, I was inspired by Auguste Rodin’s sculpture The Three Shades, a detail sitting atop the sculptor’s work The Gates of Hell, depicting a scene from Dante’s The Inferno. Although my music is not representative or depictive of Dante or an image of hell, I was deeply drawn to the sinewy character of Rodin’s work, its intensity, muscularity, consistency, and the way in which movement and energy is represented in his shapes.

Hannah Lash Three Shades Without Angles spielt mit der Idee der Verwandlung musikalischer Formen. Als ich das Stück schrieb, inspirierte mich Auguste Rodins Skulptur Die drei Schatten, Teil des monumentalen Höllentors, das Rodin nach einer Szene aus Dantes Inferno schuf. Auch wenn meine Musik nicht versucht, Dantes Vorstellung der Hölle darzustellen oder zu bebildern, so zog mich dennoch Rodins kraftvolles Werk in seiner Intensität, seiner Körperlichkeit, Dichte und Bewegungsenergie sehr stark an.

In his 80th year, Peter Maxwell Davies returns in music to Rome, where he studied with Goffredo Petrassi in the late 1950’s. Full of darkly glowing sonorities (recalling the earlier Roma, Amor of 1998) and often in a language of startling harmonic directness, the Symphony sets Leopardi’s sonnet A se stesso, Borromini’s last testament and an anonymous sonnet which attacks Borromini’s work for its ‘eccentricity’ and ‘lack of coherence’. Davies has composed a deeply moving meditation on the nature of creativity, the artist’s relationship with the past and, ultimately, mortality.

Mit achtzig Jahren kehrt Peter Maxwell Davies musikalisch nach Rom zurück, wo er in den späten 50er Jahren bei Goffredo Petrassi studierte.

Die Texte der Symphony No. 10 zitieren Leopardis Sonett A se stesso, Borrominis letztes Testament, und ein anonymes Sonett, das Borrominis Schaffen wegen seiner „Exzentrik“ und seinem „Mangel an Zusammenhalt“ angreift. Die Musik ist, ähnlich der des 1998 entstandenen Roma, Amor, voll dunkel glühendem Wohlklang und von einer oft überraschenden harmonischen Direktheit. Henri Dutilleux has just died. I listen to his works repeatedly and discover how intensely his music is linked to my sources of inspiration. These connections form the underlying scaffolding of the score of my work.

Edouard Glissant once wrote: ‘From time immemorial, humans have undertaken all possible efforts in their attempts to discover the magnetic connections in the infinite manifestations of different kinds of being.’

On this basis, I should like to pay my respects to the great French composer from my own personal universe …

The texts are drawn from a variety of religious and secular sources. The work opens with a processional, with the sopranos leading the chorus through the hall to the stage. A brass quintet is positioned offstage throughout the piece before rejoining the orchestra in the final movement. Singers perform various percussive roles, including the use of clapping, hand bells, tambourines and maracas.

compositions not to have experienced its first performance up to the present day. The World Première of the Heroische Prosodie will now take place in Hanover.

Musical material from this composition has however already been performed: within completely different contexts, Zimmermann revised the middle section to be included as ‘Das verwunschene Schloss’ in his Märchen-Suite and the fugue appears in his Symphonische Variationen über ‘In dulci jubilo’.

Unter den frühen Orchesterstücken von Bernd Alois Zimmermann kann die Heroische Prosodie als das erste künstlerisch reife und vollgültige Werk betrachtet werden. 1948 schloss Zimmermann die Arbeit daran ab, entschied aber dennoch, es nicht zu veröffentlichen. So blieb es die letzte seiner Kompositionen, deren Uraufführung bis heute aussteht.

Sie findet nun mit neuem Aufführungsmaterial in Hannover statt.

Gleichwohl war bereits musikalisches Material daraus zu hören: In völlig anderem Kontext verarbeitete Zimmermann etwa den Mittelteil als „Das verwunschene Schloss” in der Märchen-Suite und die Fuge in Symphonische Variationen über „In dulci jubilo“.

Das Stück beginnt mit einer Prozession, bei der die Soprane den Chor durch die Halle zur Bühne geleiten. Ein Bläserquintett ist während des ganzen Stücks abseits der Bühne platziert und tritt erst im letzten Satz zum Orchester hinzu. Die Sänger werden auf verschiedene Weise als Percussionisten eingesetzt, so durch Klatschen mit den Händen und durch das Spielen mit Handglocken, Tambourins und Maracas.

The attempt to design new passages and transitions from pre-existing elements (Labyrinth and Zweites Labyrinth) and new material will now be realised on a larger scale with a project that will subtly incorporate both the stage and auditorium, the economical use of light, and semi-staged elements.

Sam Rigby to follow Sally Groves We are delighted to welcome Sam Rigby to the Schott international team as Creative Director London.

Sam (31) comes with ten years’ experience with international artists agency Intermusica, where his deep interest in contemporary music has informed his work with artists and projects all over the world. He has worked closely with Schott on various projects, including a commission for Alexander Goehr for the BBC on behalf of Colin Currie and the Pavel Haas Quartet and most recently with the South Bank London’s fully staged presentation of Frank Zappa’s 200 Motels.

Sam will start working on 6 of January 2014 with Sally Groves, who has decided to retire in June 2014, to ensure a smooth transition and handover.

Wir freuen uns sehr, Ihnen Sam Rigby als neuen Creative Director London von Schott London vorzustellen. Er wird am 6. Januar 2014 seine Arbeit bei Schott London aufnehmen. Rigby ist 31 Jahre alt und war seit 2003 Associate Director bei der Künstler- und Konzertagentur Intermusica. Dort war er für weltweit profilierte Künstler tätig. Sein besonderes Interesse gilt der Musik der Gegenwart, bei Intermusica betreute er zahlreiche internationale Projekte der zeitgenössischen Musik. Bei Schott kennen wir Rigby bereits aus mehreren Jahren erfolgreicher Zusammenarbeit gut, zuletzt organisierte er das Frank-Zappa-Projekt mit dem Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Am 1. Juli 2014 übernimmt Sam Rigby die Position von Sally Groves, die Ende Juni 2014 in den Ruhestand gehen wird.

Tigran Mansurian: 75th birthday on 27 January Belaieff and Schott Music extend our heartful congratulations to Tigran Mansurian on his 75th birthday! Following his musical studies, Mansurian swiftly advanced to become one of the leading composers in Armenia. Familiarity at an early stage with the compositions of Pierre Boulez helped Mansurian master complex modern techniques. Over time, he developed a progressively more simple, almost liturgical style based on the traditions of his homeland. In his economical mode of expression with its mystical orientation, old and new are united.

His extensive compositional output has been enriched in the past few years by a number of significant works: Ubi est Abel frater tuus? (Cello Concerto, WP Cologne 2010), Requiem (oratorio, WP Berlin 2011), Romanze and Quasi parlando for violin or violoncello and strings (WP Amsterdam 2012) and Ode an den Lotus for solo viola (WP Munich 2013).

Früh mit Werken von Pierre Boulez vertraut, gelangte er zur sicheren Anwendung komplizierter moderner Techniken. Mit der Zeit entwickelte er einen zunehmend schlichten, fast liturgisch geprägten Stil, der auf Traditionen seiner Heimat beruht. In seiner sparsamen Ausdrucksweise, die mystisch orientiert ist, verschmelzen Altes und Neues.

Sein umfangreiches Œuvre ist in den letzten Jahren um bedeutende Werke gewachsen: Ubi est Abel frater tuus? Congratulations to Peter Eötvös!

Born in Székelyudvarhely in 1944, Peter Eötvös has long been considered one of the most significant and influential personalities on the music scene as both an internationally recognised conductor and a composer of successful operas, orchestral works and concertos written for artists of the standing of Midori, Sabine Meyer, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Markus Stockhausen and Martin Grubinger.

Eötvös attaches great importance to passing on his extensive knowledge and experience to others. He teached at the music colleges in Cologne and Karlsruhe and gives regular masterclasses and seminars throughout Europe, including in Paris, Lucerne, Basel, Luxemburg and Madrid. He established the ‘International Eötvös Institute’ in Budapest in 1991 and the ‘Eötvös Contemporary Music Foundation’ in 2004, enabling highly gifted young conductors such as Kwamé Ryan, Roland Kluttig and Jonathan Stockhammer and composers including Dai Fujikura to enjoy the advantages of in-depth training and invaluable artistic direction through workshops, seminars, competitions and scholarships.

We wish Peter Eötvös the best of health, unlimited energy and creative strength for his numerous projects over the coming months and years!

Er lehrte an den Musikhochschulen in Köln und Karlsruhe und gibt heute regelmäßig Meisterkurse und Seminare, etwa in Paris, Luzern, Basel, Luxembourg und Madrid. 1991 gründete er in Budapest das „International Eötvös Institute“, 2004 die „Eötvös Contemporary Music Foundation“. Hochbegabte junge Dirigenten und Komponisten, darunter die Dirigenten Kwamé Ryan, Roland Kluttig und Jonathan Stockhammer und der Komponist Dai Fujikura, erhalten dort in Workshops, Seminaren und durch Wettbewerbe und Stipendien eine umfassende Ausbildung und wichtige künstlerische Impulse.

First Nights / Premieren

his New Year we say goodbye to the Wagner celebrations of 2013 and welcome Strauss for 2014; 11 June will mark the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth. Opera houses have seized the opportunity to put Arabella, Elektra and other works into the limelight right at the beginning of the new year. There are six Strauss first nights in January and February alone, including two productions of Der Rosenkavalier (23.1 in Ulm and 22.2 in Magdeburg) and two of Elektra (19.1 in Dresden and 31.1 in Bari). This is sure to ring in the Year of Strauss with great style! In January and February we are also looking forward to performances of Werner Egk’s Peer Gynt (25.1 in Cottbus), the German première of Howard Shore’s The Fly (18.1 Trier) and several evenings of ballet with music by Gershwin (28.2 in Metz), Killmayer (17.1 in Duisburg), Korngold (11.1 in Stralsund) and Penderecki (18.1 in Münster).

Flute Concertos T

he flute concerto repertoire currently performed in concert halls is not known for its great diversity. As an interesting addition to the works of past masters such as Quantz, Stamitz and Mercadante, we are delighted to present flute concertos composed within the last thirty years. This collection of works displays an immense variety in character, ranging from the gently flowing onemovement meditation I Hear the Water Dreaming by Toru Takemitsu to Stanislaw Skrowaczewski’s impulsive Fantasy Il Piffero della Notte. The first flute concerto by young British composer Huw Watkins is a brand-new addition to the repertoire that will receive its World Première in February.

Wolynec states that ‘the first movement is very energetic, with virtuosic, lovely writing. The second movement alternates between moderately slow, not terribly slow, with a little more of a dancelike feel.

It has really lovely harmonies.’

David Wright Song of the Bells hat die Gestalt eines asymmetrischen Bogens. Das Werk beginnt mit verschleierten, ungeordneten Schlagwerkklängen, nimmt dann langsam an Geschwindigkeit zu und erreicht schließlich einen Höhepunkt voller motorischer Energie und Brillianz (die Tempobezeichnung in der Partitur ist Avanti!). Sehr schnell verhallen die Töne wieder zu einem fast unhörbaren Klingen.

Lee Hoiby hat sein Concerto for Flute and Orchestra im Jahr 1994 komponiert. Seine Uraufführung erlebte das Werk 2012 mit dem Flötisten Gregory Wolynec und dem Gateway Chamber Orchestra. Wolynec findet, dass „der erste Satz sehr energisch, virtuos und wunderschön geschrieben ist. Der zweite Satz wechselt zwischen mäßig langsam, nicht furchtbar langsam, und einer etwas mehr als tänzerischen Atmosphäre.

Das Stück hat wirklich herrliche Harmonien.“

Deeply moved after reading biographies of mentally disturbed artists, Heinz Holliger composed this monumental cycle between 1975 and 1991 whose total duration is two hours. Hölderlin, who was considered to be mentally deranged, retreated to a room in a tower in Tübingen during the second half of his life; the title Turm-Musik makes reference to this place of refuge and Scardanelli is the pseudonym he used for his late poetry.

Though the orchestral scoring is largely traditional, it is enriched by innovative performance techniques.

The work’s three sections ‘Bruchstücke’, ‘Glockenalphabet’ and ‘Winter’, played without a break, are characterized by complex rhythms and tension-laden harmony.

Turm-Musik ist ein Teil des Friedrich Hölderlin gewidmeten ScardanelliZyklus. Heinz Holliger, berührt von Biographien geistig verwirrter Künstler, schrieb in der Zeit zwischen 1975 und 1991 an seinem Hauptwerk von über zwei Stunden Dauer. Scardanelli ist das Pseudonym, mit dem Hölderlin seine späten Gedichte unterzeichnete. Als geistig umnachtet geltend, verbrachte der Dichter die zweite Hälfte seines Lebens in einer Turmstube in Tübingen; auf diesen Rückzugsort bezieht sich der Titel der Turm-Musik.

Thus Per Sonare means resounding throughout the universe or the world. The idea of mask is also conveyed by the fact that the human voice reverberates when passing through a hole, such as the mouthhole in a mask. One flautist plays four different flutes, moving from one to another just as if he were putting on and taking off various masks. As long as human existence is multidimensional, human music too must be something polyphonic, resounding through the mouthholes of our many personas.

Toshio Hosokawa „Per“ bedeutet „durch“, wie bei „etwas durchdringen“, und „sonare“ steht im Lateinischen für „Widerhall“ oder „Resonanz“. Der Werktitel Per Sonare kann also als „Widerhall in der Welt oder dem Univer-

Der Solist spielt vier verschiedene Flöten, als würde er verschiedene Masken tragen.

Solange die menschliche Existenz multidimensional ist, muss auch die Musik des Menschen polyphon erklingen, widerhallend durch die Mundöffnungen unserer vielgestaltigen Persönlichkeit.

Lorin Maazel composed his cycle of three concertos between 1995 and 1997: Music for Violoncello and Orchestra Op. 10, Music for Flute and Orchestra (presented here), and Music for Violin and Orchestra Op. 12. In each of these works there is an obbligato instrument playing in dialogue with the soloist. Music for Flute and Orchestra was written for James Galway.

The soloist is however also treated to a ‘genuine’ cadenza, peppered with highly varied playing techniques and forms of articulation.

Penderecki’s final marking, ‘Total eclipse of the moon’, announces the lyrical conclusion of the work in which the music gradually fades out like the moon taking refuge behind the shadow of the earth.

Das einsätzige Concerto per flauto ed orchestra da camera von Krzysztof Penderecki offenbart bereits zu Beginn eine markante Besonderheit: Nicht das Soloinstrument führt in das Werk ein, sondern die Klarinette, die auch im weiteren Verlauf dominant in den virtuosen Dialog von Flöte und Orchester einbezogen ist.

Nach einem ausdrucksstarken Andante entwickelt sich ein regelrechtes Wettrennen zwischen der Flöte und ihren Begleitern. Mit dem Schlussvermerk „Totale Mondfinsternis“ deutet Penderecki auf das lyrische Verklingen der Musik hin, die wie der Mond in das Schattenreich der Erde entflieht.

SPECIAL RECOMMENDATION In den Jahren 1995-1997 schrieb Lorin Maazel drei Solokonzerte, die einen Zyklus bilden: die Music für Violoncello und Orchester op. 10, die hier vorgestellte Music sowie die Music für Violine und Orchester op. 12.

In diesen Konzerten ist dem Solisten jeweils ein weiteres Orchesterinstrument als Dialogpartner zugeordnet.

My concerto for three flutes, commissioned by and dedicated to the Trio d’Argent, is loosely inspired by the rituals of the Santeria that I took part in Havana, December 1992. In this magical-religious Afro-Caribbean cult, Elegua is the ruler of the paths and Changò the ruler of fire and war. ‘Rezo a Elegua’ unfolds as a song which floats across the landscape and whose alterations in tonal colour highlight the complex changes of mood. ‘Cantò a Changò’, a poetic invocation of Changò, attempts to capture the emotional outbursts, the trance-like atmosphere and the magic of the rituals of Thierry Pécou the Santeria.

Dieses Konzert für drei Flöten, vom Trio d’Argent in Auftrag gegeben und ihm gewidmet, ist lose vom Ritual der Santeria inspiriert, an dem ich im Dezember 1992 in Havanna teilnahm.

These pieces are all based on his poetry, but the Epitaffio 2 contains no vocal part. Nono selected a line from Lorca’s ‘Lament for Ignacio Sanchez Mejias’ as the subtitle of this work – ‘Y su sangre ya viene cantando’ – as a direct reference to Lorca. In this work, Nono creates a musical sketch of the poem using the solo flute and orchestral instruments, each of which is given a solo function. His Epitaffio 2 is not so much funeral music as one of the most political flute concertos in the history of music.

Drei Epitaphe widmete Luigi Nono dem im spanischen Bürgerkrieg 1936 getöteten Dichter und Gesellschaftskritiker Federico García Lorca. Sie beruhen auf dessen Gedichten, jedoch blieb das Epitaffio 2 ohne Gesang. Als Beititel wählte Nono „Y su sangre ya viene cantando“ – eine Zeile aus Lorcas „Klage um Ignacio Sanchez Mejias“, die er hier auf Lorca selbst bezieht. Mit der Soloflöte und den Orchesterinstrumenten, die er alle solistisch behandelt, zeichnet Nono das Gedicht musikalisch nach. The first is a furious rush by the soloist, punctuated with explosive sounds from the orchestra. By contrast the second movement is very slow and sustained in which the flutist play phrases quite high and then by contrast, quite low. An impulsive 5/16 rhythm sustains the last movement which explodes into jet whistles in the final bars.

R. Murray Schafer Mein Flötenkonzert wurde für den gefeierten Flötisten Robert Aitken geschrieben; der Auftrag wurde vom Ontario Arts Council und den Canada Council finanziert. Die Komposition besteht aus drei Sätzen. Der erste Satz ist ein furioser Eilmarsch des Solisten, der durch explosionsartige Einwürfe des Orchesters unterbrochen wird. Im Gegensatz dazu erweist sich der zweite Satz als langsam und getragen. Der Flötenpart zeigt ein breites Spektrum, das von den sehr hohen Tönen bis in die extrem tiefen Regionen des Instruments reicht. Der dritte Satz beruht auf einem impulsiven 5/16-Rhythmus, der das Stück mit Pfeifenklängen in den letzten Takten zu einem fulminanten Schluss führt.

These images merged into an idea for a composition representing genesis and demise. Naturally, it also includes the celestial musician playing dance music on the flute for the god Shiva.

The work begins with an introduction in which the percussion figures evoke ritual music of the Far East.

This is followed by an extensive polyphonic cosmic dance in which the individual stages of the evolution of consciousness are presented simultaneously. The grand climax leads to a solo flute cadenza, ultimately blending the individual themes into a single melodic line.

Joaquín Rodrigo uses a small orchestra with deft colouring to support his soloist and there is a definite feeling of freedom and joy in the outdoors about the work. There are three movements, which all feature Galway’s great virtuosity but the central movement bears the weight of the concerto, as it does in his Concierto de Aranjuez: an Adagio tinged with melancholy which is interrupted by an Allegro in pastoral rhythm announced by the flute and passing in turn to the various instruments of the orchestra in different keys; after a brilliant Cadenza for the flute it then resolves into an Allegretto for the return to the melodic theme.

Dieses hinreißende Konzert schrieb Joaquín Rodrigo für James Galway, dem das Werk auch gewidmet ist. The piece hints at the great flutist Severino Gazzelloni, who was close friend with the composer. The piece, composed in three movements, is a fascinating work with rich, mercurial textures and incorporates extended techniques for both the standard and the alto flute.

Stanislaw Skrowaczewskis Fantasy for Flute and Orchestra war eine Auftragskomposition der Deutschen Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken und wurde für die Flötisten Adam Kuenzel und Roswitha Staege geschrieben. Das Werk wurde 2007 mit Kuenzel und dem Minnesota Orchestra unter der Leitung des Komponisten uraufgeführt. Die Komposition besteht aus drei Sätzen und vereint erweiterte Spieltechniken mit üblichen Spielweisen sowohl der Flöte als auch der Altflöte.

Ich wurde zu diesem Werk durch ein Water Dreaming betiteltes Gemälde eines Künstlers aus Papunya in Westaustralien angeregt. Das Bild bezieht sich auf die „Traumzeit“, einen Mythos, der unter den australischen Aborigines weiterlebt. Das Bild ist einfach, aber voller mythologischer Zeichen und Symbole und berührte mich zutiefst in seiner Bildsprache. Nach einem kurzen Vorspiel greift das von der Flöte gespielte melodiöse Thema das Bild des Wassers aus dem Gemälde auf.

Das ganze Werk besteht aus einer Folge melodischer Erscheinungsformen, Variationen und Umspielungen dieses Themas. Toru Takemitsu

Konzert

Considering the great significance the flute is given throughout his œuvre, works specifically for the flute are encountered much less frequently in Pe-teris Vasks’ compositional output than would perhaps be expected. For example in his 1st wind quintet ‘Music for Fleeting Birds’ and the solo work Landscape with Birds, the flute imitates bird calls from Vasks’ Latvian homeland, a sound which, under the Soviet regime, was code for the pursuit of freedom and the call for change.

Vasks composed his Concerto for flute and orchestra long after the democratic changes; the illustrative features of his music have been adapted. Now melody replaces instrumental artistry, and the commitment to freedom has given way to reflectiveness.

Its unique image completely captured my heart. Following a short prelude, the melodious theme played by the flute is a musical adaptation of the water icon in the painting. The entire work is composed of numerous melodic subspecies and colorful embellishments derived from this theme.

Jörg Widmann’s 2011 work for flute and orchestra, a series of dance forms arranged into a suite, differs from his other, more epic instrumental concertos. ‘Here sunken worlds suddenly emerge, breeching the surface, hovering dangerous and distorted, then sinking back to the bottom.

Each movement pairs the solo flute with a different instrumental group from the orchestra: in the opening Allemande, the flutes of the orchestra; the string section in the Sarabande; in both chorales the brass, etc.. It is only in the concluding Badinerie that these orchestral groups are combined, but they are terraced in the Baroque style, one following another, seldom playing simultaneously.’ (Jörg Widmann) Jörg Widmanns Stück ist, anders als seine anderen „epischen“ Solokonzerte, eine suitenartige Anordnung verschiedener Tanzformen. „Versunkene Welten tauchen hier schlaglichtartig auf, um – wie etwa im Venezianischen Gondellied – einmal an der Oberfläche, gefährlich verzerrt zu schwanken und wieder zu versinken.

The work begins with an explosion of rhythmic energy, out of which emerges an orchestral fabric.

This provides space for episodes of chamber music that involve the solo flute and create a variety of tone colours. The interaction between the solo instrument and the two orchestral flutes – which form a trio – unleashes an exquisite timbre that explores the spectrum of tonal shading.

Herbert Willi schuf mit dem einsätzigen Flötenkonzert seine dritte Komposition für Flöte. Eine Explosion aus energisch rhythmischen Orchesterklängen leitet das Werk ein. Nach und nach entwickelt sich ein klangliches Gewebe, das Raum für kammermusikalische Episoden der Flöte bietet. In fließenden Übergängen wird sie mit unterschiedlichen Instrumentengruppen kombiniert, um verschiedene Klangfarben zu erzeugen. Jahrespreis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik

Kölner Philharmonie: Peter Eötvös im Fokus

Violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann’s album of music by Hindemith (BIS) has received this year’s German Record Critics’ Award. Alongside the solo Sonata ‘Es ist so schönes Wetter draußen’ are the Sonatas for violin and piano in Eb, E and C, and the Violin Concerto, recorded with the Sinfonieorchester des Hessischen Rundfunks conducted by Paavo Järvi. The jury stated: ‘… a masterful performance with a consummate tone, deep insight and in absolute control of his instrument. The coupling with selected works from the treasure trove of chamber music also provides a genuine extension of the horizon and convincing plea for Hindemith’s compositional output.’

Peter Eötvös’ 70th birthday will be celebrated this year in a series of concerts and accompanying events in the Philharmonie Cologne between 16 February and 2 April. Highlights include performances of the Percussion Concerto Speaking Drums by Martin Grubinger and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra conducted by the composer (16.2) and the Violin Concerto DoReMi by Midori and the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest Hilversum (20.2). The concert series will culminate on 2 April in the World Première of Dodici, a commission by KölnMusik dedicated by Eötvös to the 12 cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic, who will also give the first performance of the work.

Das beim Label BIS veröffentlichte Hindemith-Album des Geigers Frank Peter Zimmermann wurde mit dem Jahrespreis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik ausgezeichnet. Neben der Solosonate „Es ist so schönes draußen“ Wetter und den Sonaten für Violine und Klavier in Es, E und C ist das Violinkonzert zu hören, das er laut Jurybegründung „mit dem Sinfonieorchester des Hessischen Rundfunks unter Leitung von Paavo Järvi sehr tonschön, tiefblickend und geigerisch höchst souverän eingespielt hat. Auch die Kopplung mit ausgewählten Werken aus dem Fundus der Kammermusik ist eine echte Horizonterweiterung und ein überzeugendes Plädoyer für Hindemith.“

Mit einer Serie von Konzerten und einem vielfältigen Begleitprogramm wird in der Kölner Philharmonie vom 16. Februar bis zum 2. April der 70. Geburtstag von Peter Eötvös gefeiert. Höhepunkte sind die vom Komponisten selbst dirigierten Aufführungen des Schlagzeugkonzerts Speaking Drums mit Martin Grubinger und dem Mahler Chamber Orchestra (16.2.) sowie des Violinkonzerts DoReMi mit Midori und dem Radio Filharmonisch Orkest Hilversum (20.2.). Following its première in 1957, Wolfgang Fortner's Blood Wedding quickly became one of the most popular operas of its time. However, after the composer's death in 1987 the stream of performances the work had enjoyed came to a swift end and the opera has rarely been seen on the stage since. This newly issued DVD on WERGO is taken from the acclaimed new production directed

by Christian von Götz, filmed in Wuppertal in January 2013. The ensemble is gripping, particularly Dalia Schaechter in the role of the bitter and mercilessly moralistic Mother.

Nach ihrer Uraufführung 1957 avancierte Wolfgang Fortners Bluthochzeit zu einer der erfolgreichsten Opern der Zeit. Doch nach dem Tod des Komponisten 1987 riss die Aufführungsserie ab; von nun an war das Werk nur noch sehr selten auf der Bühne zu sehen. The Venetian composer, who died in 1990, has left behind a compositional legacy characterised by his advanced and sensitive musical language, his love of literature and Classicism, and his political ambitions.

Intolleranza, dedicated to Arnold Schoenberg, Nono’s father-in-law, is one of his principle works. The designation ‘Scenic Action’ not only refers to the renunciation of a narrative form of music theatre, but also to the objective of this composition: it is an appeal to take action and to create a self-determined structure in society. The selection of settings for the various scenes, which includes post-apocalyptic Hiroshima and an Algerian concentration camp, fuses with Nono’s dodecaphonic music with its range of textual and lyrical layers in this momentous document of its time.

Over the past few years interest in Intolleranza has dramatically grown, resulting in a number of new productions. The title of the work has been altered from Intolleranza 1960 to Intolleranza in order to emphasise the timelessness of the composition. Schott has undertaken a comprehensive revision and has issued new performance material, first used in September 2013 in the Theater Augsburg. m 29. Januar 2014 wäre Luigi Nono 90 Jahre alt geworden. Der 1990 verstorbene venezianische Komponist hat ein Œuvre hinterlassen, das von avancierter und gleichzeitig sensibler Klangsprache, seiner Liebe zu Literatur und Klassizismus sowie von politischem Anspruch geprägt ist.

Intolleranza, dem Schwiegervater Arnold Schönberg gewidmet, ist eines der Hauptwerke Nonos. Die Gattungsbezeichnung „Handlung“ verweist nicht nur auf die Abkehr von einem erzählenden Musiktheatertypus, sondern auch auf das Ziel des Werks: Es ist ein Aufruf zum Handeln, zur selbstbestimmten Gestaltung der Gesellschaft.

Die Auswahl der Schauplätze, etwa das postapokalytische Hiroshima oder ein algerisches Konzentrationslager, Nonos dodekaphone Musik und die verschiedenen musikalischen und textlichen Ebenen verschmelzen zu einem epochalen Dokument seiner Zeit.

In den vergangenen Jahren hat das Interesse an Intolleranza mit mehreren Neuproduktionen deutlich zugenommen. Der zeitübergreifenden Aktualität Rechnung tragend, wurde der Werktitel von Intolleranza 1960 zu Intolleranza
