Congratulations to the entire Marlboro Jewish Center community on this 50th Anniversary milestone. We joined in 1972-48 years ago and got involved in the community with our two young boys joining Hebrew School and the youth groups. Arline, with her expertise in early childhood education, helped develop the early days of the Hebrew School and early childhood programs as VP of Education and Youth. Hy was attracted to ritual service and has been close to the committee for over 40 years. Hy, as Ritual Chairman carried the first Torah into our new building in June, 1977. He later went up the chairs of office and signed the first catering contract and as President in the 1980,'s led the meetings that approved the plans and financing for our Chai Building. May we continue to move from strength to strength. Arline and Hy Grossman

On the Sunday before Mother's Day, for about 5 or 6 years in the 1980s, MJC participated in the Shore Area Walk for Israel. The 25 kilometer Walk's purpose was to demonstrate solidarity with Israel and to raise funds. All funds were donated to various charities in Israel, primarily to the National Blood Center in Ramat Gan and ARMDI for three ambulances. The Walk was started by B'nai Israel in Rumson and for 8 or so years was chaired by my brother, Joel Whitman, who got me involved. Starting in 1987 or 1988, MJC hosted the Walk, and about 12 other congregations participated. I chaired the committee at MJC, and the members I can remember were Roberta Feibusch, Ike Shalom, Bob Kaldor and I apologize to those I cannot remember. Below is a picture of Mayor Saul Hornik (May, 1988) welcoming the walkers in front of Marlboro Elementary School across from MJC. ~Sheldon Whitman

We started out here 25 years ago and have enjoyed spending this time with MJC as the spiritual home for our family. Warm regards and wishing everyone health and happiness in the future. Len, Erika, Harrison, Madison, and Elizabeth Whitman

Dear MJC,

Mazel Tov on the celebration of your 50th Anniversary. I’ve been so fortunate to be part of your history as Ritual Administrator for 18 of your 50 years. I’ve worked with seven Rabbis, four Cantors and well over 1,500 families in happy times and in sad times. I cherish all the memories I have and the special friendships I’ve made. MJC has become my second family. I hope your doors will be open to the Jewish community for at least another 50 years! With great affection,

Reba Schneiderman

For reaching this milestone...

To another 50 years!

3/29/20—My grandson, Adam Salzer, and his wife Michelle, were married by Rabbi Michael Pont at the very start of the pandemic at the Cul-De-Sac in Rosemont Estates, the home of Michelle’s parents. We enjoyed a beautiful outdoor ceremony.

These photographs exhibit very important events in my life at MJC. My grandson, Adam Salzer, and his sister, Lindsey Salzer, became B’nai Mitzvah with Rabbi Schlessinger and Cantor Ben-Isvy. I became a Bat Mitzvah with Cantor Ben-Isvy with three other members of MJC. As President of the Prime Timers, there were many events and speakers and our delightful fun Hanukkah parties. Congratulations to Marlboro Jewish Center on your 50th anniversary. I am so lucky and happy to be part of this spiritual home where we pray and enjoy wonderful caring friendships. How fortunate we are to have such special spiritual leaders as Rabbi Michael Pont and Cantor Michelle Teplitz and those who work so hard to enhance the mosaic of our Congregation. MEMORIES OF CONGREGATION OHEV SHALOM / MARLBORO JEWISH CENTER My family and I moved to Freehold, NJ in July 1971 and soon after we got settled in our new home, we learned of a new shul being built in the Marlboro area. Having come from a family of shul goers, we decided to check this out as we only lived about four miles from the site of the new shul. Bat Mitzvah of Ilene Goldberg, 3/25/78 Left to right: Mel, Michael, Ilene, Elinor

The rest is history. We were there when the founding fathers broke ground for this new building. Each family that attended this event was given a shovel to help dedicate this parcel of land as our new shul. We were there when our children attended Hebrew School at Central School in Marlboro our family davened for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur held at Marlboro High School or the Robertsville Fire House. We were there shlepping Torahs to various homes every weekend in order to have Shabbat services in a member’s home.

Bar Mitzvah of Michael Goldberg, 11/27/80 Left to right: Mel, Ilene, Michael, Elinor

We were there every Friday night (when the building finally opened) with our young children as we prayed and in addition, made lifelong friends.

We were there celebrating simchas with family and our new-found friends, from Bar and Bat Mitzvot to weddings to births of grandchildren and many other celebrations. My family and I were happy to be a part of this congregation and participate in its growth and development by being involved in many committees and activities and are thrilled to have been part of the growth of “our home away from home.” Second Marlboro Jewish Center adult Bat Mitzvah class. The participants are: left to right, Cindy Wasserlauf, Elinor Goldberg, Ann Harris, Jean Rosen and Renee Dictrow. Cantor Neil Ben-Isvy was our wonderful and patient teacher and we had a wonderful celebration with friends and family.

Congratulations to OUR congregation on its 50th anniversary and may it prosper for many more years to come! MAZEL TOV! Elinor and Mel Goldberg and family

Our family has enjoyed countless wonderful memories over the past 13 years at MJC. Highlights for us include watching all 3 of our children thrive at and graduate from MJC Preschool. Another highlight for us was Hayden’s “not Mitzvah” on 5/24/20. She excelled in her online zoom service and Rabbi Pont and Cantor Teplitz made it an exceptionally special morning for our family despite the unusual circumstances. We look forward to now celebrating both Hayden & Jolie’s combined B’nai Mitzvah on 1/30/21. Freya & Jason Markowitz and Family

It seems like only yesterday when we joined Marlboro Jewish Center. So many memories are associated with MJC—from Bar Mitzvah’s, marriages, baby namings, holiday services, temple celebrations and the passing of dear family members. We have shared the good times and the bad times with our temple family. We wish MJC Mazel Tov on 50 years. “Thanks for the memories…”

Many memories have been shared at Marlboro Jewish Center, from my very own childhood, being Bat-Mitzvahed, confirmed and participating in USY. Then watching my very own family create a Jewish foundation here through friendships, Pre-School, Hebrew School, B'nai Mitzvah, Confirmation, Youth Groups and Board positions! The Sherman Family (Michelle, Wayne, Jared, Matthew, Jason and Samantha) would like to wish MJC a Happy 50th Anniversary!

Mazel Tov on the 50th Anniversary! Our dream came true! With love, Isabel & Paul Jacob

A Fond Memory: Dedication of the Beit Midrash In 1999 Marlboro Jewish Center embarked on building a small sanctuary where we can pray in an intimate manner and a library where we can study and learn. In early 2000 our dream of having a Beit Midrash/Study Center became a reality. The project was completed under the leadership of Rabbi George Schlesinger and Executive Director Barry Mael. Pictured are Rabbi Schlesinger and members of the Beit Midrash committee which include Lance Adelson (co-chair), Marc Neugeboren (co-chair), Joyce Sugarman, Jeff Chalal, Sylvia Neugeboren, and Brenda Adelson (me). I vividly remember consulting with the designers, Ascalon Studios, for close to a year on aspects of the project including the design of the ark, the stained glass windows, the entrance doors, the Torah reading table, the cabinet for taleisim and books, the pews, the eternal light, as well as the dedication sculpture. I also fondly recall the trips to Boro Park and Livingston to choose the silver for the Torah scrolls and beautifully embroidered covers for the Bimah table. As a member of the committee which worked tirelessly as a labor of love, I take great pride in this splendid room in which we hold nightly minyans, Shabbat services, and Simchas. It will forever be a very special place to me. The Beit Midrash stands as a wonderful legacy for all members of Congregation Ohev Shalom and the generations that follow. Brenda Adelson

In thinking about what I’d like to submit to the Marlboro Jewish Center 50th Anniversary Memory Book, my mind was flooded with memories of a good portion of my life: -Memories of the Bat Mitzvahs of both of my daughters and sadness that my beloved Philip only experienced the joy of seeing Lara become a Bat Mitzvah. -Sadness that Philip passed away shortly after. I had to call upon the clergy to help me through this time and later on when my Dad and then my Mom passed away. -Joyous memories of 4 generations of my family experiencing services, celebrating holidays and attending special events at MJC. How my father, Morris Heiko loved the lecture series when Bob Salman was president and my mother, Minnie Heiko, enjoyed hearing me sing at the annual Interfaith Concert! -Happy memories of the marriages of my daughters and of Rabbi Schlesinger officiating at the marriage of myself and my husband Stan. I’ll always remember when he said, “I don’t know Stan but I do know Bonnie. If she chose him, then he must be very special.” -Gratitude that Rabbi Kamens listened and responded when Sandy Siegal, Ellice Gottfried and I approached him about starting a support group for young widows and widowers. -More gratitude when several years later we were encouraged to start an adult singles social group which took the form of a weekly volleyball game in the newly opened Chai Building. This is where I met my husband. -Wonderful, comforting memories of singing with the chorus. When I was widowed and didn’t think it appropriate to sing, the chorus was my outlet for making music that was appropriate. And throughout the years, with skilled and patient leaders such as Sandy Chalik, Cantor Krieger and Cantor Teplitz, singing has kept me connected to my soul and my synagogue. -More gratitude for being approached to become a board member and then to edit Temple Topics. Both gave me an opportunity to be the voice of an under-represented segment of our congregational family. And yet, with all of these meaningful and very personal memories flooding my mind, the most significant thought I have involves an old expression, “Yesterday is the past, tomorrow is the future, today is a present.” Today, The Marlboro Jewish Center has helped me survive the pandemic and this is truly a gift. The beautiful High Holiday Services touched my soul deeply. Allan Sugarman’s classes not only engaged me but allowed Stan & I to be part of a community and see familiar faces when we were otherwise isolated. We’ve been able to “attend” services, B’nai Mitzvot, classes, special events & holiday celebrations, whether we are in NJ or our 2nd home in NC. And so, today, after 50 years, The Marlboro Jewish Center is a vital, vibrant, living entity; a priceless, essential resource for my community, my congregational family, myself & my husband. This is indeed a gift. Bonnie Wolf

So very many memories of our 50 years as members of Marlboro Jewish Center. What stands out most is our family's donation of a Torah to the Temple in 1979, one that has been in our family for 5 generations Mom, Rise, as well as children, Lori and Marc, got to read from this special family Torah as part of our Bar/ Bat Mitzvahs at the Temple. In addition, three of our grandchildren, Danny Singer, Adam and Stacey Samit, read from this Torah as well. A true celebration of our heritage!! Congratulations Marlboro Jewish Center on your Golden Anniversary! Here's to many more years serving our Community and making memories for all. Rise & Joel Samit & Family

We cherish the wonderful memories shared at MJC. Happy 50th Anniversary from Ian, Ellen, Jacob and Ilana Blumen

Being one of the founding families of Marlboro Jewish Center, we hosted the first Megillah reading in our basement and the first sukkah was built in our backyard. At that time, dues were only $10 a family. Services were held at the Old Brick Reformed Church in Marlboro, we used to know everybody who attended. My Grandparents, Jean and Henry Blank, donated the first 50 siddurs and guaranteed the first Torah from Rego Park Jewish Center. Robin was one of the first Bat Mitvahed for our synagogue. However, my service was held at Beth Ahm because our synagogue was not built yet! Many meetings were held at our house for the synagogue in our basement!. Such topics discussed were the name of the synagogue and various committees , in order to reach out to them to our community to bring in members. Six of the Barsky’s grandchildren have been educated through the Synagogue’s Hebrew school and were B’nai Mitvahed. In addition, several grandchildren were named in the synagogue and marriages were held in the Sanctuary. We are proud of our family’s history and involvement at Marlboro Jewish Center. Happy 50th MJC!

We are honored to belong to Marlboro Jewish CenterOhev Shalom and send warm wishes from Southfield, Michigan. Mazel Tov on 50 years of offering so many wonderful things at the synagogue. Your clergy, leadership, staff and members set a wonderful example of what a warm and loving congregation should be. May we celebrate many more years together. Thank you for taking such good care of our family. Janet and Herb Pont

Marlboro Jewish Center is such a special part of our family history, with four generations of our family having worshipped with the Congregation. Our children’s entire lives have been spent as members, and their Jewish education—and now their children’s Jewish educations have been guided by the Temple and we cherish our memories of the Temple’s 50 year journey. It began 50 years ago when my husband Howard, my infant daughter Lori, and I moved to Marlboro from Brooklyn, but there was not yet a synagogue in the town. Luckily, a neighbor told me about a service for a new Conservative Temple in Marlboro and from that day on, my family—soon to include son Lee—attended services with the new congregation. Without a home to call its own, we were a bit like traveling Nomads with services held in various locations around town...Friday night services in the firehouse, local schools, and even the School House of the Old Brick Reform Church on 520 where, if I remember correctly, we were welcomed by Reverend Hart; High Holiday services at MarEl and meetings generously hosted in the basement of the home of Myrna and Norman Barsky. Howard, myself and my mom Beatrice Noe were at the groundbreaking for Ohev Shalom where Rabbi Teplitz’s father spoke. Our children, Lori and Lee, grew up at the Temple attending Sunday School, Hebrew School, and even taking part in the BBG and AZA Chapters. Our son Lee celebrated his marriage to our Daughter-In-Law Rachel by having his Aufruf in the main sanctuary, and in time, our grandchildren Dara and Jared had their Baby Namings as well as their Bat and Bar Mitzvahs at Ohev Shalom. We continue to take part in the community of the synagogue and are honored to be a part of this milestone celebration. Mazel Tov and L’Chaim from all our family.
