Mission

Dear Friends,

Thank you for making a difference for Holy Child students and faculty with your gift during the 2021-2022 fiscal year. You play a vital role in helping to move our mission forward.

When you read the following pages, we challenge you to connect to the impact philanthropy has on Holy Child and our students. Giving to Holy Child is a bold investment in an institution that is vibrant, missiondriven, and responsive to today’s students’ needs. With Holy Child poised for growth and innovation, the impact that our donors make on the lives of all who walk through our doors is more evident than ever before.

We offer our thanks to you for your past support of our beloved school. We hope that from this report, you continue to feel pride in and passion for Holy Child, as we remain dedicated to earning your loyal support.

With immense gratitude,

The mission of School of the Holy Child is to develop “women of conscience and action.” An all-girls, Catholic, independent, collegepreparatory school for grades 5-12, the School is guided by the educational philosophy of Cornelia Connelly, the founder of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, and her dedication to “joy in teaching and joy in learning.” Accomplished and dedicated faculty members foster the spiritual development, individual talents, and interests of each student. This is realized through rigorous and comprehensive academic, arts, athletics, service, and global programs. Holy Child graduates are prepared for the innovative and critical thought necessary in a diverse, interconnected society.

Among other projects, your philanthropy has enabled the School to:

RENOVATE the Science Labs to intentionally provide students with hands-on learning experiences in a flexible, state-of-the-art environment. The new labs offer clear lines of sight to all boards, accessibility for all students to gather around instrumentation centers, optimal storage, and space to improve interaction, encourage collaboration, and promote inspiration.

BUILD a new turf field which allows our student-athletes to have the competitive edge they need to win. The full 94,748 square feet turf playing surface was removed, and the gravel and sand substrate was re-graded and sloped for maximum drainage. The rubber infill has been reclaimed, which will be recycled into the new surface. Further updates include pathways onto the Field (Gryphon Field Parking Lot gateways), a new turf-lined entrance will be installed for the athletic shed, and reclaimed turf flooring will be installed in the softball dugout areas.

UPDATE the sound system in The Kelly Gymnasium. The upgraded sound system will enhance the all-school gatherings such as sporting events, church services, and special events hosted in the Gym and Field House.

PROVIDE heightened campus security, ensuring that our girls are safe and protected. There are now upgrades to door access control systems along with expansions to our security camera coverage. A new door access control system enables the administration to manage different locations with real-time cloud login capability to make adjustments as needed. Upgrades to our video camera system enable our staff to monitor the entry points to the Holy Child campus and internal common spaces throughout the buildings. Video and intercom devices also enhance security at service entrances.

Philanthropy at Holy Child

Philanthropy impacts every corner of the Holy Child campus. We are incredibly grateful to the donors listed in this report for their financial contributions to the Annual Fund for Holy Child, our signature fundraising events, and our capital campaign for the STREAM Center.

From the buildings that students learn and thrive in, to our ability to attract and retain the best and brightest teachers and students, Holy Child wouldn’t be the vibrant, joy-filled institution empowering students to become the next generation of courageous and compassionate leaders without the generosity of generations of alumnae, parents, and friends.

WHY I GIVE?

“We have always considered ourselves blessed to be able to have children attending worldclass schools that provide highquality education. Coming from a family of teachers, we appreciate the selfless work it requires, the dedication, and the impact educators have on our children. Mrs. Pettus and her team lead by example. Holy Child represents a high school where our daughter continues to grow in values, academics, and sports. Our family, going back generations, believes that building a strong foundation on education vastly increases one’s probability to succeed in life. It is because of these reasons we choose to philanthropically support Holy Child. In an ever-changing world where relativism and uncertainty seem to invade our children’s sphere of influence, Holy Child represents that beacon of light and stands for our values, beliefs, and continuity of a successful approach to form our daughters.”

WHY I GIVE?

“Ever since our daughter, Sara, began her Holy Child journey in 5th grade, we have witnessed Cornelia Connelly’s model of “joy in teaching, joy in learning” firsthand. Holy Child teachers and staff truly care about truly care about the whole person in addition to providing a top-notch education. Everyone on the administration team led by Colleen Pettus provides exceptional guidance to the girls, all while keeping Catholic and Christian values top of mind. It was an easy decision for us to take an “extra step up” in charitable endeavors to Holy Child and to support the school’s vision of women of conscience and action.”

WHY I GIVE?

Marlon Mahon, Trustee, and Xiomara Gordon Mahon, P ’22

“We believe that everyone is entitled to a quality education and our support not only addresses the current needs but also pays forward to the next generation of young women and the advancement of education. We have had the opportunity to experience the impact of a Holy Child education as parents to a Class of 2022 graduate. Shake the hand of a Holy Child young woman and you feel the confidence. Engage in conversation and you hear the confidence in their thoughts. Observe from a distance and you see the confidence in their stride, engagement and smiles. To give to Holy Child is paying forward and shaping our tomorrow. When you give of yourself, you get back what you give.”

WHY I GIVE?

Thomas and Heather Gillespie, P ’23 ’25

“We have been members of the Holy Child community for the last eight years. From the first minute we stepped foot on the campus we immediately felt the warmth, the love, and support for not only our girls, but our entire family. Holy Child has a distinct way of developing young girls into confident, compassionate young women who are regardful of the world we live in. As longstanding members of the Holy Child community, we feel it is extremely important to provide our financial support. We are grateful to be a part of this remarkable community and this is just one way we can show our appreciation.”

WHY I GIVE?

Steve and Cathy Clemens, Trustee, P ’19, ’22

“We continue to give to Holy Child because we value the education that our daughters received and we want to help provide that opportunity for others. Our daughters, Emily ’19 and Ashley ’22, grew academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually at Holy Child. Emily and Ashley are now in college– Emily at the College of the Holy Cross (graduating in May 2023) and Ashley at the University of Virginia. While at different stages of their undergraduate education at two very different colleges, we see how Holy Child provided our daughters with the wisdom and confidence to “meet the wants of the age.” We want to help to ensure that future Gryphons have the same strong educational foundation that our daughters had at Holy Child.”

WHY I GIVE?

Jackson Robert and Andrea Hooper Robert, Trustee, ’91, P ’28

“Holy Child has been part of our family for as long as we can remember, with excellent education and a lifetime of friendships for Andrea ’91 and her sister Olivia ’93, and now similarly for our daughter Hanna ’28 and her cousin Sarah ’27. Outstanding education (and great science!), family, friendships, trust, individual attention are some of the reasons why we believe giving to Holy Child is so important. We know that Holy Child will always be our home, and a source of comfort, but we are thrilled to be able to be a part of Holy Child’s future as well!”

ABC’s OF ANNUAL GIVING

What is Annual Giving?

Annual Giving is the total support received in a fiscal year from the Annual Fund for Holy Child, the Benefit (and other fundraisers like the Library Luncheon and Boutique), and Capital Campaign fundraising efforts. Members of the Holy Child community are encouraged to support all components of the School’s Annual Giving efforts.

ANNUAL FUND

Unrestricted Gifts

Unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund support virtually every aspect of school life. Most specifically, merit scholarships and financial aid, academic and extracurricular programs, campus enhancements and maintenance, and faculty benefits and compensation.

Restricted Gifts

Restricted Annual Fund gifts support specific needs within a fiscal year and can only be designated by the donor. Some examples include, Smartboards, microscopes, tickets to Broadway shows, team uniforms, Steelcase classroom furniture, and 3-D printers.

BENEFIT AND OTHER FUNDRAISING EVENTS (like the annual Library Luncheon and Boutique)

The annual Benefit is Holy Child’s main fundraising event. Support of the Benefit is integral to supporting unrestricted operating expenses of the School. In recent years, there has been a DONATE NOW component of the event which supports a specific need or initiative that would immediately impact the School and our students. Support of the Benefit in addition to the Annual Fund is encouraged.

C

APITAL CAMPAIGN FUNDRAISING EFFORTS

Above and beyond Holy Child’s need for annual operating support is its need to plan and provide for the School’s long-term financial health. The operating budget does not address the need to establish and grow an endowment and expand and develop the campus. A donor’s support and commitment to Holy Child’s capital campaign fundraising efforts will enable the School to address those needs. Donors are encouraged to make their gift decisions with the intention of maintaining their support of both the Annual Fund and the Benefit.

PLANNED GIFTS

The Laurentia Society is named in honor of Mother Mary Laurentia Dalton, SHCJ, ’20, the first member of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus to be sent to West Africa in 1930, and the first American Superior General after Mother Cornelia Connelly, Holy Child’s founder. By making a planned gift, a donor becomes a member of The Laurentia Society. Planned gifts include, but are not limited to, bequests, charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift annuities, gifts of life insurance, and retirement plan assets.

MATCHING GIFTS

Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match charitable contributions made by their employees, retirees, and/or their spouses. To determine if an employer has a matching gift policy, contact the Human Resources Department. Through an employer’s Matching Gift Program, a gift can double or even triple in size and increase a donor’s support of the School.

RECURRING GIFTS

The Office of Institutional Advancement can process your identified gift on a schedule you specify, whether weekly, monthly, or annually.

A LOOK TO THE FUTURE

STREAM CENTER

Progress on the STREAM Center continues, with just over $4.7M contributed to date. Thanks to this generous support, we are able to dream big and pursue bold visions for the future of the School. The new Center will further enhance our innovative academic and cocurricular programs that distinguish a Holy Child education and enable the School to fully embrace the 21st-century learning practices necessary to prepare our girls to contribute to a literate society, a viable economy, and a sustainable world.

To learn more about how you can philanthropically impact this worthwhile endeavor, please contact Samantha Hanley, Director of Institutional Advancement, at s.hanley@holychildrye.org or 914-967-5622 ext. 290.

APRIL 15: ALUMNAE REUNION

Reunions are a great opportunity for Holy Child alumnae to see old friends, make new ones, recall special memories, and reconnect around stories and anecdotes that helped shape who you are today. Reunions also provide an opportunity to show your pride and commitment to your alma mater through a gift to the Annual Fund in honor of your Reunion milestone.

APRIL 28: 34TH ANNUAL BENEFIT

The Annual Benefit is Holy Child’s most significant fundraising event of the year. This year we are excited to celebrate and honor Steve and Cathy Clemens, parents of Emily ’19 and Ashley ’22, as well as Director of Community Engagement and Special Events, Toni Santangelo Archibald ’76.

JUNE 19: GRYPHON CLASSIC

The Gryphon Classic, sponsored by the Alumnae Association, will take place on June 19. This event is open to all members of the Holy Child community.
