Biography

Two authors, well known for their exemplary works of fiction - C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien - joined forces to create a group to harbor creative writers and encourage and perfect their craft.

Tolkien, known for his series Lord of the Rings, was a good friend to Lewis, known for the Narnia series.

The two would meet regularly to discuss their novels and other topics, but grew to invite other writer friends to discuss as they found it so interesting. The group grew quickly and became known as the Inklings meeting on Thursday nights at their favorite pub or other convenient places.

C.S. Lewis

C.S. Lewis, an English author, was born in 1898 and lived until 1963. He attended Oxford University studying English Literature until 1954, when he was elected into Cambridge University’s Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature - staying in the position until retirement.

Lewis was a renound author writing more than 30 novels, but was probably most well known for his fantasy series, The Chronicles of Narnia.

J.R.R. Tolkien

J.R.R. Tolkien, born in 1892 and passing in 1973, was a known author for his series Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. The English author was an educated scholar in the English language (specifically with Old and Middle English).

Tolkien impressively poured his heart and soul into his creations, creating multiple languages and a fully fleshed out world for him to write about.

Contributions

These writers - these creative creators - have made such well-known and unique novels that have been the bases for so many other aspects of life, including movies, media, games, and other recreational and non recreational things. Having a statue would be a wonderful visual reminder to create and encourage others in their creative endeavors.

Location 1: Fenwick Library Entrance

The location of the monument would be in front of the Fenwick library, connecting the fact of a group of writers by a place that holds many other pieces of writing.

It would face outwards, like a welcoming to any students entering the building.

Location 2: The Eagle And Child Pub Oxford, England

The second location would be in front of the pub they used to meet in, a pub known as ‘The Eagle and Child’ located in Oxford, England.

It would be a connecting to where they would always meet, and where the group began.
