A brief history of the holiday Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, is a holiday that dates back to thousands of years ago in Chinese history. According to China Highlights, there is no recorded exact date of when this holiday was officially established, but it is believed that Chinese New Year originated in the Shang Dynasty (1600 - 1046 BC).

It’s a family thing Before Chinese New Year officially begins, there are a couple customs in which Chinese families partake in to be fully prepared during the start of the holiday. Customs may vary per household, but these are a few in which my family participates in!

At least 2 weeks before Chinese New Year, there will be a big deep clean of the house. You can look at it like a spring cleaning, except that every spoon and plate, nook and cranny, would be washed, dusted, vacuumed, or wiped down.

During Chinese New Year, kids and unmarried adults would receive red envelopes and we would call relatives to catch up and to wish them a happy new year.

Chap Goh Mei A Hokkien term, chap goh means the number 15, and mei means night. This is acknowledged on the last day of Chinese New Year, which is on the 15th day / night. The history and meaning of Chap Goh Mei differs per region, but one activity that is shared is the lighting of lanterns, making and eating tang yuan (sweet rice ball dessert).

The Chinese version of Chap Goh Mei, also known as the Lantern Festival, revolves around a story about the Jade Emperor, the Supreme God of Chinese folk religion. The Emperor learned that a couple of villagers killed his pet crane, and he was angered by it. He made a plan to set fire to the village on the 15th day of the lunar year. However, the villagers were advised by an elder to hang red lanterns and set off firecrackers to make it look like the village was already attacked. This scheme helped save themselves and their village. So on the 15th day, the Emperor saw the village a blazed.

Deceived, he left the village alone.

When I learned that Chap Goh Mei was a Hokkien term, I knew I had to ask my dad about it. My parents are both Malaysian, and my dad is fluent in the Hokkien language.

Chap Goh Mei is actually a term mostly used by Malaysians. This is a day that is similar to a combination of Valentine’s Day and Thanksgiving, where couples send each other love notes and the family will gather together to enjoy a big dinner reunion.

Symbolic Food There are certain dishes that are eaten during Chinese New Year for their symbolic meaning. For the first day, my family will only eat vegetarian meals. This is not practiced by all families, but it is amongst many. The reason we do this is because it is a religious custom. We are Buddhists, and the Buddha believed in non violence or killing of animals, so this is out of respect to the Buddha. It is also believed that eating vegetarian is a way to cleanse the body, which is a good start to the new year.

Seaweed represents wealth and fortune and is most often made in a stir fry with other vegetables or made in a soup.

New year cake called nian gao, is glutinous rice cake and is eaten on New Year’s Eve. The name means “getting higher year on by year” and can imply children’s height, rise in business success, better grades in school, etc.

Leek or chives in Chinese is jiu, which sounds similar to the word “long” in English. The word “long” in Chinese is also jiu, and it means long and everlasting.

Dumplings signify family reunion since most families spend time together preparing them before eating. They also represent prosperity because of their shape that resembles ancient Chinese money.

A whole steamed fish is usually prepared for dinner on the first day of the New Year.

In Chinese, “fish” (yu) sounds like the Chinese word yoo, which means “surplus” in English. Having a whole fish symbolizes a surplus of fortunes for the year.

Cantonese Essential Greetings At home, my family does not speak as much Mandarin as we do with Cantonese. Cantonese is a form of Chinese, a dialect that originates from the city of Guangzhou, China. When Chinese New Year begins, there are a couple of important phrases we say to our loved ones and to our community.

Gong hei fatt choi, is a common phrase that wishes wealth and prosperity to others. This would be the first thing you would say when people greet one another for the first time since the start of the new year.

Sun tai gin hong, has the literal translation of sun tai meaning “body” and gin hong meaning “healthy.” This is a saying that wishes good health to someone, and is usually said right after gong hei fatt choi.

Sun nin fai lok means “happy new year”, as sun nin translates to “new year” and fai lok translates to “happy.”

Fist and palm salute, is a gesture, and is used as a more traditional form of greeting. This would usually be performed in front of elders, or it would be used when attending someone’s birthday, wedding, or funeral reception. For proper salutations, the left hand would be on top of the right for men and the right hand on top of the left for women. 的 右 手 应 该 在 左 上 方 。

Avoid taking medicine. This applies to the first day of the lunar year.

Unless you are ill, you should not take medicine. Otherwise, it is believed that you will be ill for the whole year.

Don’t sweep or take out the garbage.

On the first day, don’t do any in-house sweeping or it is believed that it is sweeping away wealth or dumping out good luck / fortune from the house.

Don’t wash clothes and hair. This applies to the first and second day. The first 2 days are celebrated as the birthday of Shuishen, the Water God. Hair should not be washed because hair in Chinese is fa, which correlates to facai, meaning “to become wealthy.” it is seen as not a good thing to “wash one’s fortune away” at the beginning of the new year.

在 新 年 伊 始 ， “ 洗 掉 自 己 的 财 富 ” 被 视 为 不 是 一 件 好 事 。

中 的 发 是 f a ， 与 f a c a i 相 关 ， 意 思 是 “ 致 富 ” 。

A married daughter is not allowed to visit the house of her parents. This may sound like a strange one, but it is actually believed to bring bad luck to the parents, which could cause financial hardship for her family. Traditionally, a married woman will visit the house of her parents on the second day of Chinese New Year. However, the newer generation may view this taboo as more lenient as it is hinted towards an unfair patriarchal structure.

Avoid borrowing money. Money should not be lent or borrowed on New Year’s Day, and all debt (if able to) should be paid by New Year’s Eve. if someone owes you money, don’t ask them for it.

Anyone who borrows, lends, or asks for money is said to be unlucky all year. 年 都 不 走 运 。

Black and white colors are associated with mourning.

Avoid breaking things. Items such as tools, plates, or other equipment should not be broken because it is associated with a loss of wealth of the coming year.

Don’t give certain gifts.

Clocks represent parting, pears are given at funerals, sharp objects will cut off a relationship, anything with the number 4 symbolizes death, shoes are evil, umbrellas give off bad luck, and mirrors will attract ghosts. 子 是 邪 恶 的 东 西 ， 雨 伞 会 带 来 厄 运 ， 镜 子 会 吸 引 鬼 魂 。

Orchids represent fertility, abundance, refinement, luxury and innocence, and in Chinese culture, they have been symbolic of a blessing of having many children.

Firecrackers were originally used to scare away evil spirits, but are now used to express happiness and invite good luck.

The color red. This would be the most obvious one. In order to have a full celebration, there should be at least a couple red items in your house. Or, people would oftentimes wear red clothing or accessories for a couple days during the 15 day celebration if not the whole year.

My concluding thoughts As an American born Chinese / Malaysian, growing up in America seems like the most ideal place for cultural growth and opportunity. It is no easy feat raising kids in a country so different from the one you grew up from, and words can’t express how much I thank my parents for their continuous sacrifice and unconditional love, no matter the reason. Chinese New Year is a cultural treasure I share and celebrate with my Chinese community, and it used to be something I was afraid to speak about or celebrate publically due to our customs being seen as odd, or feeling judged for the food that is served. This feeling has been heightened due to recent events, and I wanted to

bring attention to the current acts of violence and hatred towards the Asian community. While I am deeply hurt and saddened over peoples’ choices of outlet for anger, I still hold hope that we’ll be able to reconcile and learn from one another for greater understanding of different lives.

Throughout the process of writing and putting together this book, I am grateful I learned a little more about my culture, and to have a moment of reconnection with my parents sharing their experiences. I hope this book can inspire respect, acceptance, and the willingness to be open minded to other cultures.
