Mammoet’s team suggested an alternative method, proposing to remove the entire bridge in one night by using the Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) method.

Using six trains of 8-line SPMTs equipped with 250-ton jacks, the bridge was lifted from its abutments, traveled southbound along I-95, and finally staged on an offramp to later be demolished. This approach saved over an estimated 29 days of work.

Always looking for a new challenge, Jack then moved into the business

leading global appliance company Electrolux in North America, where competing against exceptional competitors taught him another valuable lesson. “If you want to win and grow against tough competitors, you always have to find a different situation based on your strengths against your competitor’s weaknesses,” he explained. With Electrolux’s products going into people’s homes, Jack was exposed to the home building sector, albeit on the inside of properties - when he joined James Hardie his focus was then turned to the exterior as well, both in new construction and also in renovation.

James Hardie is now benefiting from the repository of skills, insights and dedication to innovation that Jack has nurtured throughout his career, and he is applying these to the business to guide it through the transformation currently underway. When he joined, he found a company with great quality products that were well-known by contractors, but whose progression had stalled.

It had aspirations to become a new version of itself, enabling consistent, profitable, global growth. This required a change of direction and a unified view. “To be able to perform at the

We have to find those key missing pieces of the puzzle and put them together. It’s a tough thing to do, but it’s also a fun thing to do!”

Think global, act local Jack’s ability to have a holistic view of an organization and identify both the good areas and those that need improvement is one forte that he has truly exploited at James Hardie.

“This strength is really about going into a business and seeing what is there currently and then visualizing what it could be. Every company, every business - it doesn’t matter

how bad or how strong it is - always has key assets and always has areas that can be cut out.”

Using this approach, Jack believes that ‘every company can be made into a business with good growth and strong profits’. He also had one essential piece of advice for business leaders: ‘change is constant’. “To deal with this, you have to make sure that you are planning ahead; you have to know where you want to go and where you need to be,” he emphasized. “You have to have a plan for the journey and then work every day to make sure that you build the capabilities to achieve it. Be consistent, and while you can make adjustments along the way, in the end your direction should be the same.”

With operations on three different continents, James Hardie is one of only a few truly global firms in its industry, but as Jack noted, when he arrived this major benefit wasn’t being exploited to its full potential.

“What I saw at James Hardie when I joined was that it was almost operating like a regional company, focused on North America, doing one type of business in one way. I saw the opportunity at James Hardie to take something

Having undertaken his analysis of its operations, Jack could see at this point that James Hardie was at its core a manufacturing organization, but with plants being run using different techniques and working independently of each other. “The first big

change I made within the company was to turn it from the world’s largest fiber cement producer, into a world-class manufacturer,” Jack revealed. “We brought all the plants together, running the same operating procedure, all based on a lean strategy.

“By doing that we created a lot of standard work, and that means we can get a lot more out of the resources, as all plants make the

same type of products. It also allows the plants to work together to consistently serve the customer in the right way.”

Jack’s plans additionally included closely partnering with customers via a push/pull strategy, as well as integrating its supply chain with customers. Implementing and embedding a globally integrated management system was also part of the strategy. He noted that this total change of approach was somewhat of a culture shock to the existing team, but while there may have been some initial skepticism about the new direction, as gains and progress were made, the employees started to get on board.

“Many of our operators were really dissatisfied with their jobs when I arrived, as there wasn’t a standard way of running things,” he said. “The lean approach simplified a lot of wasted time, resources and money, and thousands of our manufacturing employees really bought into the change, creating positive momentum, which gave us something to build on.”

Jack. “Changing the culture is probably the most difficult thing to do, and the beginning is the most challenging, but when it happens it is the most rewarding,” he said. “My experience is always about showing and demonstrating results, as I find that results speak for themselves. Once that happens then you start to get ‘lead change agents’ at the middle level who begin to believe in the process and the program. Once you pepper those throughout the company then you get more buy-in.”

Global outlook With the lean program streamlining operations and increasing efficiencies, and the three separate regions working strongly together, Jack’s focused vision of implementing a ‘think global, act local’ philosophy across the entire James Hardie operation gained further traction. While integrating its operations

wasn’t straightforward, Jack believed it would reap rewards, and his confidence was not unfounded. “Once we connected our three regional businesses into one, our footprint across these areas gave us the benefit of having a front row seat to seeing what is going on globally,” he said, before going on to give a real-world example. “About seven or eight years ago in Australia, particularly in Sydney, there was a design trend for darker colored, modern homes that were very open plan, with a lot of windows. This home design then moved into Scandinavia and spread to Western Europe, and now it has moved to the West and the East Coasts of the US. If you go to Seattle, Washington or Portland, Oregon, or down to the coast of Southern California, you will see a lot of those modern homes popping up in exactly the same colors and structures as Sydney and Copenhagen.

A further example of ‘think global, act local’ and one that is unique to James Hardie is that its manufacturing plants are strategically located around the sources of supply and customer bases. “Within any of our fiber cement manufacturing plants we source over 80 percent of our raw materials within 100 miles of our plants and then we ship over 60 percent of our finished goods to customers located within 500 miles of each of our plants,” said Jack. “So, we do have a really local approach. We hire highly-skilled local employees and build and invest close to one billion dollars annually in the communities around our plants. Now the facilities all run the same global strategy of lean execution, but we act and execute in a local way.”

The tendency for the construction and building materials sectors to be localized meant that historically the rate of change in the industry has been quite slow. “But as we are becoming more globally connected, a lot of the best practices in one area can be replicated into another area very quickly, so from that perspective we also have the capability to be a change agent for the entire industry,” declared Jack. This is of particular significance as the building materials industry is facing disruption right now, with challenges in the form of a lack of materials from the supply chain perspective, as well as a lack of skilled labor.

“These challenges are really going to drive the rate of change in the industry faster,” said Jack, “and we have the opportunity to help lead the industry to a newer, better place.”

Renovate and remodel With contractors and builders already familiar with James Hardie products, Jack and his team now have their sights directly set on the large numbers of consumers who are thinking of renovating and remodeling their homes. “This is a huge opportunity for us to really expand,” said Jack. “North American market data reveals there are approximately 80 million owneroccupied homes in the US today, and 44 million of those are over 40 years old and probably need to be re-sided. Of course, not every home will be re-sided, for a variety of reasons, but if we take just five percent of that total, we are left with 2.2 million homes that can and should be re-sided every year. This is essentially twice as many as new homes being built, meaning the opportunities are much bigger in the renovating and remodeling marketplace.”

We are seeing a huge amount of construction activity and renovation in the US, Australia and Europe, so it is really a good time to be in this industry right now,” revealed Jack.

How to cut costs and win customers with subscription-based home services The housing market has undergone profound and rapid changes in recent years. completion, there will have been nearly 75 distinct phases of work executed across the campus.”

The majority of this project focuses on a complete renovation of the current main campus, creating a new Children’s Hospital, with key features including a new 230,000 sq.ft. medical tower providing a 28-bed cardiac intensive care unit, 12 operating rooms, an imaging department, central sterile processing, dietary, and emergency department. Further construction included a freestanding 51-bed, 70,000 sq.ft. behavioral health center, a new 593 space parking deck, a comprehensive cancer center and central energy plant (CEP) expansion.

Clearly a significant project not just in terms of value and scale, but also complexity, Wills noted some of the key challenges, which included a single point of connection between the hospital and ambulatory care center (ACC).

“The lone internal corridor connecting the north and south sides of the facility carried

new Pavilion. The CEP Expansion required extensive use of temporary equipment to prevent any downtime of HVAC systems.

Furthermore, an existing underground 50k gallon diesel fuel tank was decommissioned under the footprint of the CEP expansion to allow for foundations to be installed.”

The comprehensive range of skills and repository of construction knowledge available at LEMOINE is invaluable when it comes to projects such as this, and thanks to its experience in the medical facility field it is also involved in another similarly challenging scheme in Louisiana. “We are working on the renovation of the West Jefferson Medical Center, which is part of the same healthcare system as CHNOLA (LCMC Health),” confirmed Wills. “This is also a multi-phased project, and what sets it apart is the removal and replacement of the cladding of the west elevation of the existing eight-story patient tower while occupied. Additional scope includes an addition and renovations to the

most recent major development - the Port of Long Beach Fireboat Station 15 project.

Consisting of a 20,000-square-foot landside fire station and a 11,200-square-foot boat bay, the $40 million project is the first of its kind for the Port of Long Beach. Critically, thanks to Pinner’s ability to personalize its work, the facility was specifically designed and constructed to last more than 50 years in the harsh harbor climate. A unique project in many ways, Fireboat Station 15 required all the company’s expertise to complete it safely and on time.

“Working in construction is naturally accompanied by significant inherent risk, however, our responsibilities get even more precarious when constructing a 40-foot steel structure over water,” Justin says, in reference to Fireboat Station 15. “As far as safety challenges go, our project had them all - from hydrographic surveying, to installing piles into the seafloor, to an interior temporary scaffolded platform extending out over the ocean.

“Our approach to ensuring the safety of our personnel, the public and marine life involved on-site planning and oversight by our management team, which included a full-time safety representative. We created a positive

site-specific safety culture and process that was implemented by all team members throughout. Finally, we complied with the very unique requirements for waterway safety, vessel traffic coordination and the protection of marine life set forth by the USACE, USCG, Port of Long Beach and other regulatory agencies.”

Pinner’s diligence paid off. Not only did the Fireboat Station 15 project earn USGBC LEED Gold status, but it won the construction firm a contract for the $31.6 million Port of Long Beach Fireboat Station 20 project.

“We’d like to extend a big thank you to all our client, design and subcontracting partners on the successful completion of Fireboat Station 15 and we look forward to getting started on Fireboat Station 20,” Justin reports.

“The new project will involve the construction of a two-story fire station building, fireboat bay enclosure, floating dock, positioning and fender piles, retaining walls, emergency generator and additional site improvements.

For this development, we are proud to, once again, be partnering with many small business enterprises and a workforce consisting of local community members and veterans.”

Construction continues to be one of the fastest growing industries in Southern

No stranger to the pages of Construction Today, the company was last spotlighted in the early months of 2020. Therefore, the first topic of conversation when speaking with President and CEO Jon Shilling in June 2021 is how he and his business have found the last 15 months or so. “It is perhaps an understatement to say it has been an incredibly strange period of time,” he begins,

referring of course to the fact that the last year and more have been defined globally by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We had actually just finished up attending the CONEXPO 2020 trade show in Las Vegas when things started to shut down in the US back in March 2020,” Jon continues. “From there, we very quickly had to get as best an understanding as possible of how Covid-19 would impact us, and what rules we would need to follow across our various locations.

“Fortunately, being a pretty high stocking dealer with our fair share of inventory – especially on the aggregate side – we have been able to maintain our ability to have the right equipment available to our customers at the right time, in spite of higher than usual levels of demand”

We were considered an essential business, which allowed us to continue operating. As a precaution, we closed our front office right out of the gate for a few weeks, setting our people there up to work from home, and we made sure to get PPE and other important assets as fast as we could.

“We also devised detailed cleaning and maintenance programs for our sites and for our employees to follow, and I must say it was our people who really stepped up to the plate

throughout the pandemic. Not once did I hear from anyone complaining about what we were asking them to do, and collectively they all made every effort imaginable to ensure that we were able to continue to take care of our customers.”

Speaking of General Equipment & Supplies’ customers, the company also enacted several programs to provide them with additional support and peace-of-mind. “For starters, we immediately offered a 90-day deferment of

payment with zero interest on all orders,” Jon reveals. “We also dropped all of our mileage charges for all outside service calls that our technicians responded to. Aligned to this, we have offered even greater flexibility regarding the time our people arrive at other’s sites and how long for, so as to minimize unnecessary contact, while at the same time maintaining strict cleaning and sanitizing routines.”

Due to a combination of the company’s aforementioned actions, as well as the fact that for the vast majority of its customers work continued throughout 2020 in one form or another, the last year as a whole was a generally steady one for General Equipment & Supplies. “Overall, the year went well from a financial perspective,” Jon confirms. “While revenues were understandably down on previous years, our ability to manage our expenses and work efficiently meant that we were able to remain profitable at the end of the day.”

Not a business to ever sit still, General Equipment & Supplies has also continued to expand its footprint. “One location where we are currently looking to grow is in Rapid City, South Dakota,” Jon explains. “We have identified a new location on land that we intend to purchase in due course, before going through the various formalities needed to commence building and parking equipment there. We have also begun the process of hiring various support reps and technicians, as well as dedicated salespeople for that site.

“Meanwhile, we continue to expand upon our presence in Duluth, Minnesota. Up until now, we have just had a holding area for equipment at this location, but we are now carrying out the pre-construction work

A further important recent development worth noting is that, in May 2021, it was announced that the company had agreed to represent the equipment lines of both CBI and Terex Ecotec in the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa. “These two new lines mark important new additions to our product portfolio, giving us other product

It also further cements General Equipment & Supplies status as a one-stop-shop turnkey solution for our customers.”

Driving the success of the business behind the scenes, there is not only an entrepreneurial organizational system present, but also an imbedded company culture amongst its workforce. In the case of the former, ever since Jon took over the position of President in 2017, he has sought to apply the thinking of Gino Wickman, as detailed in his 2007 book Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business. “Traction is a practical book that promotes a unique management process that has proven to be extremely helpful and important to us in recent years,” Jon states. “We have implemented a number of the ideas and teachings discussed within the book across the business. For instance, we have applied certain thinking to the way in which we run our meetings, and this has proven integral in making them more efficient, which in turn has meant that any issues that arise from them are resolved in a timely fashion.”

Another significant area covered within the book centers on the ideas of core values and culture, and General Equipment & Supplies has appropriately also channelled significant efforts into this part of its operations, led by its Director of

Workforce Development, Ann Pollert. “Ann has very much been what I like to refer to as our ‘culture champion’,” Jon says. “It is she who has taken responsibility for making sure that all of our employees, both existing and new, are fully on-board with the culture that we have strived to create here at General Equipment & Supplies. For new starters especially, it helps that they have an immediate understanding of the core values of the business and that they are able to buy into these quickly, so as to best determine if they are a good fit for us, and vice versa.”

Ann goes on to add: “The importance of a strong company culture is something that we have always been aware of, and this is now boosted by every senior member of the team taking a more active role in making sure that General Equipment & Supplies is a company that people want to work for. This singular effort has definitely contributed to our success, and we will continue to involve and reward our people and their families as we grow in the months and years to come.”

Reflecting on the year to date, Jon tells us that the first half of 2021 has been an extremely busy period of time for the company.

Jon anticipates this pattern continuing through the second half of the year, while the industry as a whole shares a positive outlook for what 2022 has to hold as various markets correct themselves and rebound. For its part, General Equipment & Supplies is following what is a ten-year plan for achieving continued growth. This decade-long vision is in turn broken down further into three-year strategies, annual targets, and quarterly goals, which are constantly being evaluated and adapted where necessary.

“A big element of working towards achieving our ten-year plan is the ability to expand our existing inventory of products, especially in those areas where we see continued high demand,” Jon declares. “As such, we will carry on putting all of our effort into growing our product offering across the board, which we believe will also help to further grow our customer base. . C. Stevens Construction Company may be celebrating its ninth decade in the construction industry, but that does not mean that its belief in leading service delivery has become a little rusty. The business remains as determined as Ray Stevens was back in 1926 when he was the first builder in Orlando to provide both design and construction projects for his clients. In those early years, he was a pioneer of the design/ build process who earned great respect for his integrity, innovation, keen sense of quality, and the ability to handle it all. Now, almost 95 years later, President and sole owner, Tim Keating, shares with Construction Today the fantastic accomplishments this award-winning company has achieved throughout all these years. “Back in the days of its creation, towards the 1930s, Stevens entered the industrial market to design and build fresh fruit packinghouses, citrus processing plants and bulk storage structures, as well as to do general

commercial construction work for icemaking and refrigerated buildings using cork insulation,” he begins.

“Stevens then entered the healthcare market, building Orlando General Hospital’s

Nursing School in 1940, and the hospital’s 1948 expansion. Joined by his son Allyn in 1952, Stevens’ excellent relationships continued with citrus owners resulting in major design/build work in the citrus canning, concentrate, processing, and bulk storage industry, including the first commercially operating citrus concentrate plant for Vacuum Foods - later known as Minute Maid, then Coca-Cola,” he continues.

In 1993, as part of a business continuation plan, David J. Smith and Tim were named President and Vice President, respectively.

Both helped accelerate the company’s growth with larger projects for other citrus processing plants across Florida. Tim tells us more of the inner-workings of the business that continue to sustain its success. “While most of our projects are in the southeast, we go where our clients need us. Many of our successful Florida food and beverage partnerships trust us and know that we understand their company’s needs and how they operate,” he says.

The fact that R. C. Stevens is still in business after 95 years is a point of pride for Tim and his team, and being a smaller business, the company culture is driven by camaraderie, communication, and collaboration. “An entrepreneurial spirit is encouraged, which allows for personal growth and independence. change’s sake, but we change things to keep people challenged,” he expresses.

This dynamic is what has led the team to stack up an impressive portfolio of projects, from industrial works to historical renovations. For example, in Florida, the Bond Building is a creation very close to the team’s heart because it now serves at the company’s headquarters. “After a gruelling 17 months of renovation and restoration of this 1912 building in downtown historic Winter Garden, R. C. Stevens moved its main office from Orlando into this hip new building and served as the general contractor for the subsequent restoration efforts,” says Tim. In 2011, The Bond Foundation Inc, a private grant making foundation, undertook the renovation of two buildings, one of which has been unoccupied since a fire tore through it in 1979, and the other having its second floor condemned since the 1960s.

After 100 years of standing, the building is back to being the cornerstone of historic downtown Winter Garden.

Tim explains that the 18,000-square foot building, which originally was a farm equipment and supply store, also was one of the first brick buildings to be constructed in Winter Garden. The walls and roof supports date back to the original structure, and the metal hoists that were used for lifting the farm equipment remain in the ceiling.

According to him, the building, which compromises of two side-by-side adjoined buildings, now also consists of a new steel and wood skeleton that was installed to reinforce the original brick construction.

“The history of the building is part of the décor and speaks throughout in photos and its brick walls. Traces of a fire, which nearly destroyed the building in 1980, are still visible in the charred bricks that remain in several areas, including the conference room and in my office. The fire damaged some of the walls so badly that additional loadbearing supports had to be added during the renovation,” Tim shares.

at its plant in Bartow, FL. R. C. Stevens Construction has provided design/build services for both Peace River Citrus and Coca-Cola North America for several decades.

Knowing the processes and management of both companies has made R. C. Stevens an excellent design/build contractor of choice.

“We are currently providing construction management for a 360,000-square foot design/build process facility, which will include cold storage, process, and packaging areas along with utilities,” says Tim. The expected completion of the project is expected for January of next year.

Another project in the works is The Exchange building. Tim explains how the

traditional building design exemplifies the essence of the Plant Street district, with a layout that blends in perfectly with the neighboring historic buildings, landscape, and amenities to complement the small-town charm of Winter Garden.

The building features modern office space on the second and third floors, with a mix of restaurants and small shop retail users on the first. The upper two floors contain stateof-the-art finishes and elevator lobbies.

The floors are designed with large column spacing, allowing for tenants ranging from 2,500 square foot up to 14,000 square foot per floor. The ground floor space is designed to accommodate a variety of restaurant

space up to 7,000 square feet and retail space ranging between 1,000 and 4,000 square feet.

“Although the building appears to be three separate buildings, they function as one. The benefit of this approach was that the interior structure is open enough to accommodate modern tastes, while the exterior is in keeping with the historic nature of the area,” he highlights.

The ability to adapt in conditions that are continually and unexpectedly evolving is a skill required by all employees of R. C. Stevens, which is how the business was able to cope admirably with the unprecedented circumstances of Covid-19. “Our resilient

team never missed a beat during that time and developed many strategies to stay healthy, both physically and mentally. We were blessed to be working on projects that kept moving, while adhering to the CDC protocols. Even though the pandemic made it difficult to receive PPE at the onset, our safety manager worked with a local 3D-printer company to create pseudo masks with disposable filters,” adds Tim. “Our employees contributed to a bi-weekly newsletter that shared ideas to keep each other informed and connected; like photos of how their families were coping, and team member tips on working from home and best practices. It was also a platform to continue

recognizing each other’s efforts and updates on projects; all to keep us connected as we were apart,” he notes.

During this time, transparency and accessibility were considered a top priority for Tim, who every Friday afternoon would send out an inspirational video talk and on other days of the week hold ‘coffee talk’ Zoom meetings to encourage dialog between the team members. “It became an important way to keep our team intact and provide that much needed emotional uplift,” he says.

Now that the business is on a strong uphill trajectory, the future is looking promising for the construction company. “I see us continuing to grow by advancing that culture of teamwork, excellence, integrity, and honesty to another new level. I want to boost innovation and bring purpose and selfsatisfaction to our employees where they want their best friends to work with them. I want the word ‘work’ to be associated with satisfaction and fun, while at the same time be challenging and exciting,” he elaborates.

To work with this business is to understand its vision to exceed client expectation. According to Tim, this is easily achievable with a work ethic that is dedicated to a job well done, something that is not always taught in higher education.

Although he has nothing against higher education, he believes that many skills needed in the construction industry can be learned through an alternative approach to going to college. “I’ve been exposed to many people who own companies and have never been to college, never had that school loan debt hanging over their head because they went through an apprenticeship program that allowed them to earn while they learn. As such, they were able to control their own destiny and capitalize on the opportunities presented to them. This is a great industry with enormous opportunities,” he concludes.

Ray Stevens would be proud to see where his company is now and that his ideals of integrity, innovation and quality remain embedded in his business, even today.

CWI’s positive experience with Empire Crane ultimately influenced its decision to purchase another Tadano Demag from the company in January 2021 - this time an AC100-4L model. In June 2021, the company also took delivery of a new 2021 Tadano Demag AC60-3. “We’ve worked with the Lonergan family since I was a kid,” CWI Owner Chet Chludenski III said at the time. “It’s always good to do business with people you know and trust.”

As Chet’s endorsement of Empire Crane suggests, the company receives a great deal of repeat orders thanks to its individualized customer service and personal approach to business. In February 2021, Vergona Crane Co purchased a new Tadano GR1000XLL-4 from Empire Crane. The 100-ton rough terrain crane features a 224.1-foot max lift height, smart counterweight system, and asymmetrical outrigger setup. As the first GR product sold into Empire Crane’s New Jersey territory since being awarded the Tadano account in 2020, the sale marked a milestone for the Lonergan brothers’ business. Looking back on the landmark transaction, Luke is quick to compliment his workforce and the role they continue to play in the company’s growth.

“We have a great sales team, parts team, service team, and in-house business support team,” he declares. “All our employees are very motivated and support the customer as

best as they can. It’s a goal-oriented group that believes in the ‘big picture’. By that, I mean we strive to respond to every single inquiry and serve each client like they’re a part of the family.

“I truly believe that having a strong team has been a huge contributing factor to our growth. We currently have four outside salesmen, a sales manager, three parts representatives, three service managers, and eight technicians. With all our teams working seamlessly together to deliver success, we have never been in a better place as a complete dealership.”

As the Covid-19 vaccination program rolls out across the United States, more and more businesses in the Northeast are re-opening their doors after being forced to close in some capacity during the pandemic. Having made it through what has been a difficult year and a half for many organizations around the world, Empire Crane is looking forward to re-connecting with customers who may have been absent from the industry of late, and hitting the summer 2021 construction season at full force.

“As owners, my brother Paul and I are very active in day-to-day operations at Empire Crane,” Luke remarks. “I’m more focused on the business and accounting side, while Paul works more with manufacturers and service teams, but both of us love getting involved.

We like to get out and see customers, learn

what projects they’re working on, and know what equipment challenges they face so that we can help them find solutions. That’s what really excites us about things hopefully getting back to normal over the course of the next six months.”

Having seen its product range evolve drastically over the last five years, Empire Crane is ready to embrace the technologies of tomorrow as it tackles the challenges of the decade ahead. If the future is anything like the company’s history to date, Luke knows that Empire Crane has no reason to be anything but optimistic.

“I can only imagine how technology will advance as we journey into the next decade,” Luke says. “Looking back at our experiences since 2015, there have been so many safety updates to new equipment between then and now. Back then, we had just taken on the Magni Rotating Telehandler line. Today, that product is the number one item in our rental fleet with about 20 units at 95 per cent utilization. With more customers becoming aware of the Magni products and their amazing capabilities, its potential will be infinite for years to come.

“One thing for sure is that we will continue growing together as a team,” Luke adds in summary. “Many of our employees have been with us for over ten years now, and with their successes and hard work, we’ll be able to serve our customers even more effectively.”

ormed almost 100 years ago – in 1923 to be exact – Byrne Construction Services (Byrne) has long maintained its dedication to excellence, quality, and service in construction. A leader in the industry, the efforts of Byrne’s people have very much helped to shape a great deal of what its home state of Texas looks like today.

It is Matthew’s father, and Chairman, John Avila, Jr. who deserves a lot of the credit for the recent success of the business, having acquired the business in 1995 and

subsequently setting about diversifying its pursuits and building a formidable list of clients. “Prior to purchasing the business, my father had enjoyed a distinguished career as a senior executive at several of the nation’s top commercial contractors, and this aided him in being able to bring some of that ‘big firm’ talent with him to Byrne to oversee its operations,” Matthew details.

and the means with which to bring on-board additional administrative and field staff. As a result, the company has grown to produce a yearly turnover approaching $300 million in a relatively short space of time, which is incredible.”

Today, John’s sons Matthew and Paul Avila – who holds the position of Chief Operating Officer – are majority owners of the business.

Together, they have combined the mentorship and teaching of their father and his business partners with their own skills sets, education, understanding of technology, and innovative mind-sets to carry Byrne forward on the next stage of its evolution. “Paul, for example, was behind the creation of our VDC department, growing it into a really important part of the

business,” Matthew adds. “It was also under Paul and myself that the business brought Brett Berdine into the fold, firstly as IT Manager and now as IT Director, and he and his team have helped to revolutionize how Byrne operates from a technological perspective.”

What has remained constant as the business has gradually been passed down from John to his sons is its employee centric culture. “My father is very much a relationship-focused person, a people person if you will, so when he was building the business back up its success was driven by the relationships he forged not only with external partners or clients, but internally with the men and women whose contributions to Byrne are invaluable,” Matthew enthuses.

“Paul and I grew up watching our father at work, and as the leadership transition took place we recognized just how important it was that we retain that intimate, familyorientated feel that Byrne has, together with an environment that is fuelled by a collective desire to support everyone both professionally and personally. Ultimately, I think that is one of the biggest reasons why we find ourselves where we are today as an organization.”

Interesting projects As previously alluded to, Byrne has been responsible for delivering a myriad of different projects over the years, to sectors including the aviation, cultural, municipal, commercial, residential, and healthcare spaces. One of its most important undertakings, which has really helped to take the business to the next level has been its work across Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport, which has included a program of terminal renewal and improvements, and the construction of both a parking control system and a consolidated rent-a-car facility. “As you can probably imagine, it is a very complex task working across what is an active airport,” Matthew says. “When you also factor in that a lot of what required renewal and improvements – including the existing IT and plumbing infrastructures – was extremely dated, our work here required a great deal of time, effort and attention to detail.

“Other areas of expertise that we possess, which I think are especially cool, involve our work restoring historic buildings and on educational facilities. Two examples of the latter would be our work on Amon CarterRiverside High School and on Trimble Tech High School, both of which are large, multimillion dollar projects that are helping to bring those buildings into the 21st Century.

As a family that has lived in the local area all of our lives, it is projects like these that are of particular pride to Paul and myself.”

As the world enters the late spring/early summer of 2021, Matthew is correct in stating that for many this remains an unpredictable period of time. Nevertheless, there is much optimism to be had in the trends that the construction industry in the United States is seeing before it. “The opportunities to secure new work are most definitely out there, with bond dollars continuing to fund infrastructure projects and large institutional private clients tendering for new projects. So, if anything, our workload is accelerating, not slowing down,” Matthew proclaims.

With this in mind, what will Matthew, Paul

and the rest of the Byrne team be focusing on in the months to come? “The strength of our business is based on the abilities of our people,” he details. “Until now, we have had a core group of five that have made up our senior management team, but we have just recently promoted a further two individuals into Executive roles, thus joining our management committee. So, our immediate intention is to integrate them into the fold and begin leveraging their respective skills and vision for

what the future of Byrne looks like.

“From the management team on down, we all know that what we have here at Byrne is extremely special, and that the values, work ethic and passion that our business has become known for needs to be protected and passed on down to the next generation of employees. Cutting its teeth on small-scale residential projects, the company quickly built for itself

“Working together, Ron, Jack and David started the business the good, old-fashioned way with just a backhoe and a track loader, and literally built it from the ground up,”

As Steven goes on to detail, there are other factors that are also responsible for the business’ considerable success. “First, it is the people who make up our family of employees, and we go to great lengths to find, hire and retain those individuals who are invaluable to our continued prosperity,” he says. “Meanwhile, another facet that is somewhat unique to Muschlitz Excavating is our ability to be very detail orientated in all of our collaborative decision making. We have touched briefly upon some of the projects completed by Muschlitz Excavating in the past, but just as impressive are some of the work that it is currently undertaking.

One particular example – and its largest undertaking to date – is its work on the Northampton Business Center. Located in Allen Township, Northampton County, PA, the proposed site extends over 280 acres and

will eventually be home to no fewer than five substantial warehouses. The project involves over two million cubic yards of earthen material that needs to be handled, as well as 600,000 cubic yards of rock, and will also see three township roads being upgraded with new traffic signals, storm sewer and paving.

Meanwhile, when it comes to SITECH, it is the leader in providing easy-to-use Trimble construction technology solutions, from machine control systems, to site positioning and other associated software. “SITECH have aided us immensely over the years in guiding us through the ins and outs of Trimble’s solutions in order to make use of it to the highest possible level,” Steven affirms.

“Our knowledge of such solutions is of huge importance when it comes to the type of large projects that we take on, and we have been working very hard to narrow down our numbers and better understand different processes in order to get a truer value of our cut-to-fill basis,” Steven continues. “If we take the site of the Northampton Business Center, this had over 1.2 million yards of cut-to-fill material to take care of, so moving the dirt was one thing, but balancing the site after the fact was an entirely different challenge altogether. This is because as well as balancing that 1.2 million yards of cut-to-fill, you are also balancing five different sets of building spoils, all with different designs, interior and exterior peers, various underground utilities and all of the dry utility calculations. Throw on top of that over 600,000 yards of rock and the need to understand swell and compaction factors, and it makes for a complex and interesting conundrum, but one that we very much enjoy taking on!”

Looking back on the last 12-to-18 months, and Steven suitably refers to it as a unique period of time. “When you come across a once-in-a-generation event such as a global pandemic, then it doesn’t matter what type of business you are, there is no written blueprint that specifies how to combat this.

What we can say from our own experience is that our ability to face down adversity with a collaborative, level-headed approach has paid off, in spite of losing approximately 7.5 weeks of business during the height of the pandemic.

“During this period, we were able to keep our repair shop open, and we had the foresight to use the time wisely to do things such as rebuild a lot of our trucking division while our fleet was not out on the road. The result was that we emerged from those 7.5 weeks stronger and hungry to get back to work, and with arguably a greater appreciation of our day-to-day life as part of a business that continues to retain the respect of its customers.”

For Muschlitz Excavating, the first several

months of 2021 have continued to deliver good results, but Steven is keen to stress that the goal of the business remains that same, and that is to become even better at what it does. “Our philosophy has never been to be the biggest player out there – although we are now at a size where we are able to compete with the largest contractors in the

Most recently, the company has been concentrating on the launch of Realm, a community of modern condos and townhouses in Burlington’s Alton Village.

“Realm is a brand-new development, with 601 units spread across two 16-story buildings, two mid-rise properties and townhomes,” Tariq states. “We are launching

that fairly soon and it will be under construction later this year.

“We also have a site on 135 Portland Street in downtown Toronto, which is yet to be branded. It’s going to be a boutique condo building in King West’s Fashion District. That will launch for sale and break ground later this year and we are super excited about it.”

Adi’s new Realm and Portland Street projects arrive on the back of 30 per cent growth for the business in 2020, despite the obstacles presented by the Covid-19 pandemic. Deemed an essential service in Ontario, the company was able to continue building homes and offices throughout the crisis.

“At one point, we had 400 workers on one of our sites, which meant we had to implement strict protocols regarding site screening, daily line-ups, check-ins, temperature control, sanitation and sanitizer stations,” Tariq reports. “It was tough, but the local union sent us a message acknowledging that we were doing a fantastic job protecting our workers on-site. Safety was our number one priority and remains so today.

“From a growth perspective, we actually hired more staff during Covid and increased pay for our front-line employees as a show of appreciation. We are lucky to have extremely passionate people in this business that care about our customers and that love what they do. During the pandemic, Saud and I actually went down to our construction sites and spent lots of time with our employees to show them our gratitude. They are constantly learning and always looking for ways to improve and it’s been a pleasure to deal with every single one of them.”
