Let’s Go Resolution Free!

Life coach Leah Wiseman Fink shares some year-round tips

H

ow many times have you created a resolution and oof—you either forgot you made one or, worse, you don’t keep it and feel bad about it?

Leah Wiseman Fink, founder of The Spark Society, a community for women in NYC, and a life coach who works with everyone from corporate leaders to new moms, believes resolutions are overrated. “I understand why people get hung up on January 1st, but what does it mean anyway?” she says. “Whether it’s January or June, why not think about where you want to be right now? You’ll get there either way.”

We chatted with Leah about ways to change your life, regardless of the time of year.

This month, don’t worry if you do not have a laundry list of changes or goals you want to accomplish. Instead, focus on what is possible at any time of the year.

There is always this pressure to make sweeping changes in the New Year. What are small ways a person can start to feel good about where they are in life?

One thing I’d recommend is to think about what you can add instead of what you can subtract. For example, instead of thinking about subtracting pounds, can you think about adding some health goals? And to continue

with the health metaphor, instead of trying to cut out all sugar, get to the gym every day, and stop drinking, can you do one out of the three?

Another thing I am a big fan of is the list of appreciation. I often have my clients write a list of 10 things they are grateful for each day. It makes a big difference in the mindset of knowing what you already have, and being settled and appreciative of what you have will naturally catapult you to the next level.

When in a rut—the kind you don’t even know how to start getting out of—what are the first steps someone can take to climb out?

Although being in that space is rough, a small change is all you need to get started. In terms of the specifics, here are some tips.

Identify where you want to be, phone a friend, and ask for help.

Pinpoint a goal, whether big or small, and then take steps to get there. I always suggest tangible goals, like signing up for a race.

Feel free to plan backward: What are the short workouts you need to do to get to the harder ones? And build up from there. This can be applied to anything: a career move, finding a relationship, or a big move.

Remember, the only thing that will keep you stuck is not doing anything at all, so take a deep breath; you’ve got this, and whether it is enormous strides or small

steps, you are moving forward.

What are examples of realistic goals a person can make to feel less frazzled mentally?

Carving out time for yourself is essential, even in small ways like not reaching for your phone first thing in the morning. Then, I urge people to block out time in their schedules for things that fill them up. Can you drink a glass of water and stretch instead of worrying, even for five minutes? Is there a dance class you can take?

Can you get your partner to watch the kids so you can get out and grab drinks with friends?

Try an afternoon nap or, even in a minor way, a walk around the block. The chunks of time don’t have to be huge, but they do have to be consistent.

Many people, especially moms, have challenges with creating boundaries. What are some healthy ways to develop them?

I define boundaries by figuring out what you want and not letting anything get in the way. Boundaries can be tough because, in keeping with what is best for yourself, you sometimes make another person uncomfortable. To reference the sometimesoverused analogy, you must put your own oxygen mask on before helping anyone else.

High-Demand Jobs for Parents in NYC Great fits for a career change

I

t’s no secret that parenting in NYC is a full-time job. We do a lot. Stroll, like with a stroller, through snowstorms, trek to daycare, and squeeze onto packed subways, all before 8 a.m. Even with a job we’ve vision-boarded and worked hard for, things shift when you become a parent. Add a wonky economy and AI reshaping the workplace, and the way we think about what career, balance, and family look totally different. Maybe it’s wanting to be in an occupation that will always be in need of your skills(wouldn’t that be nice?), or you’re craving a work-life balance that doesn’t feel impossible. It can be all of this AND wanting a health plan that supports the whole family.

Changing Careers is PossibleEspecially in NYC It’s easy to say, “Try a new career.” But most of us know the truth: that leap often comes with training, time, and a salary reset you might not be ready for. But New York does offer real pathways if a career change is something you’re dreaming about, even if you can’t step into it this very second. The plus of these jobs? These jobs are in specializations where parents can build stable, long-term careers that won’t disappear overnight.

Jobs in New York that have Longevity Healthcare

This field is one of the steadiest paths out there. Nursing, medical tech roles, and health services positions aren’t going anywhere, and the benefits tend to be some of the strongest.

Tech and Cybersecurity

Not everyone is a tech person, but tech jobs are still essential — and for the folks who naturally love problem-solving (or catching the “sneaky stuff”), cybersecurity is becoming one of the most needed fields out there. While the words coding and cyber anything make my normal head spin, they are trainable fields and come with salaries that can genuinely pivot a family’s trajectory.

Electricians and Mechanics

These hands-on fields, where the work is steady, the pay is real, and union benefits can be a game changer. And we can’t forget the quiet power of city and state jobs: predictable hours, reliable healthcare, and the kind of long-term stability that feels almost radical in this economy.

Teaching

The city is desperate for special ed teachers, math and science instructors, bilingual educators, ENL teachers, and even Pre-K and substitute teachers. With class sizes shrinking, retirements, and hard-to-staff neighborhoods, there’s no shortage of opportunities. Some roles require certification, but programs like NYC Teaching Fellows make it possible to switch careers even if you’re coming from a totally different path. A pivot like this, is not without challenges, the time you have to give towards it, the cost on the family-hello, NYC cost of living.

But for parents looking for a career change that offers stability, growth, and the chance to make a real impact, these high-need teaching roles could be the perfect fit.

Paths the City Supports The Opportunity Promise Scholarship

Thanks to the state’s fiscal 2026 budget, adults ages 25–55 with no prior degree can now pursue free associate degrees in highdemand fields. Think: teaching, nursing, engineering.

Free Community College

Through the Opportunity Promise (NYSOP) program, CUNY community colleges and CUNY Online. According to the program, these programs also cover tuition, fees,

books, and supplies for eligible New Yorkers.

This is a BIG deal when juggling a family, a full-time job, or both, because the extra things that come with college life add up. The caveat with this program is that you do not hold a college degree (yet!) and are choosing a high-demand field. SUNY also offers a similar initiative for adult learners, providing additional affordable routes into new careers.

I recommend checking out CUNY here and SUNY, as both sites help understand how this program works and the community colleges that are part of it.

Why These Jobs are Popular The Office of the New York State Comptroller reports that from 2000 to 2023, New York’s 65+ population grew by 53%.

The population here is aging, and with that comes more opportunities (jobs!) in healthcare, education, and community services, which, for one of the largest cities in the US, are not just important—they’re essential.

NYC Parents have Done this A new career might sound overwhelming, but it’s not just a theory; it’s happening. I personally have friends who have made career changes later in life. A mom friend went from graphic design to nursing at almost 50 and recently raved about the health benefits she can provide for her children. A fashion-industry mom who, in her late 30s, used the very program mentioned here, NYC Teaching Fellows, is now a teacher (and while challenging, loves it.)

For any parent thinking about a career pivot or a second chance, these are the paths we have found that tend to hold up, not just on paper, but in real life.

Gowanus Discover Brooklyn’s next family-friendly community

I

n New York City, many of us parents wonder whether the city still has livable areas. Which in real speak means: can we settle somewhere that is still financially doable and designed for raising a family? There is. And this gem is Gowanus, a Brooklyn neighborhood that has been undergoing a transformation.

A Neighborhood Finding Its Footing Like any forgotten neighborhood that has a major glow-up, Gowanus used to have a notso-nice rep. Long, defined by its industrial history and the color of its canal (Hello, Amsterdam?!), was not well known. Those naysayers would be shocked to see it now, as it has evolved into something new, offering opportunity and flexibility for those looking to put down roots. What’s drawing families here isn’t only what the neighborhood is becoming, but what it already provides.

While affordable housing remains a challenge citywide, Gowanus is one of the few places where apartments and homes can still feel within reach.

Moving, especially with a specific need like kid-friendly schools, a good community- is a big parenting need. In Gowanus, families are in mind with the new housing developments being built. Many offer a long list of amenities that are popular these days especially for families. Thankfully, more lotteries are helping those who want to move to the area. What makes Gowanus a great choice for parents is what it offers: rent for now, buy when the time is right, while living in a growing and thriving neighborhood.

School Choices As more families move into Gowanus, schools are top of mind. Many parents look to a mix of nearby zoned and choice-based public schools, as well as charter and private options in surrounding neighborhoods.

Elementary schools such as P.S. 133 William A. Butler School in nearby Carroll Gardens are sought after with Gowanus families.

The area is also home to newer, progressive options, such as The Children’s School (P.S. 372), which has drawn attention for its arts integration and project-based learning.

Culture, Creativity, and Community Family life in Gowanus has developed in ways that support its community. Room to Run, Play, and Cool Off For families, outdoor space is always a biggie because kids equal energy. Ennis Playground, tucked between 11th and 12th Streets near Second and Third Avenues, is a favorite thanks to its sprinklers during the warm weather, a cool play area, and basketball courts. The Thomas Greene Playground on Nevins Street and Third Avenue (between De Graw and Douglas Streets) offers a traditional park setting—with a standout feature: a public pool. And just as Central Park serves as an oasis for many New Yorkers, its twin, Prospect Park, is close enough for family adventures.

The Teenage Brain What parents need to know about these sometimes-baffling minds

H

ave you ever looked at your teen and thought to yourself, “What in the world is going on inside of that brain?” Turns out, there’s quite a lot.

The teenage brain is very different from that of an adult. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, adolescence is an important time for brain development. This is because the brain is not fully developed until the mid to late 20s, when the prefrontal cortex is matured. This is the part of the brain responsible for skills like planning, prioritizing and making good decisions. So, when your teen thinks it’s a good idea to skip class and hang with friends instead, you can blame the lack of brain development (but they are still grounded).

A teenager loves their phone and there is actually a reason On the topic of hanging out with friends, you might wonder why it seems your teen can’t go an hour without some form of socialization.

They are glued to their phones and want to be anywhere but home. This is because brain development is connected to social

experiences during adolescence. The NIMH states that changes to the areas of the brain responsible for social processes can lead teens to focus more on peer relationships and social experiences. This means that your teen is placing more value on hanging with friends than the consequences of doing so. For the teen brain, the enjoyment of the company of friends outweighs the fear of getting caught skipping class. Still grounded, though!

But, according to NIMH, the teen brain is adaptable, with an amazing ability to respond to new experiences and situations.

“Taking challenging classes, exercising, and engaging in creative activities like art or music can strengthen brain circuits and help the brain mature,” they said. That’s why it’s important to encourage your teen to engage in extracurricular activities. While these activities also look stellar on a college application, they are truly encouraging positive brain development at a crucial time.

Also crucial to teenage brain development is a solid sleep schedule. If you find your child is staying up all night and exhausted all day long, you’re not alone. Melatonin, the sleep hormone, functions differently in teens.

significantly in the morning, which explains why your little night owl is a zombie when it comes time to get up for school. However, getting enough sleep is important for impulse control and focus, so it’s important to encourage your teenager to step away from the midnight group chats and into a warm bed.

Teenagers brains are really different With so much going on up there, it’s not surprising that the teen brain also responds differently to stress. According to the NIMH, this is a time when stress-related mental illnesses like anxiety and depression can occur. “Ongoing changes in the brain, along with physical, emotional, and social changes, can make teens more likely to experience mental health problems,” they stated. It’s important to recognize the signs of mental illness in your teen and respond accordingly with professional help.

While raising teenagers can be difficult (to put it mildly), you’ll be glad to learn that the teenage brain is highly resilient. “Despite the stresses and challenges that come with adolescence, most teens go on to become healthy adults,” says the NIMH. “Some changes in the brain during this critical phase of development actually help support resilience and mental health over the long term.”

So, despite the many challenges of adolescence for both teens and parents, your child is likely to grow into a happy, healthy adult.

ith winter weather here and last month’s chill — there may be snow ahead, which means time for sledding. Living in the concrete jungle, finding the perfect hill or park to sled on can be a bit challenging, but not with our list. Whether your child is hitting the hills for the first time or if they’re an aspiring winter daredevil, we’ve compiled a great list of sledding hills to keep the kids entertained if/when snow flurries in.

Where to Go Sledding in the Bronx Shoelace Park – Northern Bronx Hills E 233rd St. & Bronx River Pkwy, Wakefield This narrow park in the northern part of the Bronx is great for a walk, but also has some prime sledding spots. The best sledding is between 220th and 230th Streets, where there is a good hill for a long, hard ride! Owl’s Head Park is also nearby.

Van Cortlandt Park – Nature-Friendly Hills Broadway & Van Cortlandt Park S, Kingsbridge Van Cortlandt Park is the third-largest park in NYC, with a lot of history and natural beauty.

It offers a bunch of gentle slopes for younger kids to enjoy. There is a golf course that you should avoid, however tempting it may be.

Ewen Park – Steep Hills for Adventurous Sledders Riverdale Ave. & W 232nd St., Kingsbridge Ewen Park is a smaller park, but its hill is for the adventurous! The hill is pretty steep, and you have to bail out at the end, but it is worth the adrenaline rush. Some also like to use the stairs as a hill, although that is not as safe.

Crotona Park– Winter Fun Behind the Ballfield Charlotte St., Crotona Park For those in the Bronx looking for snow day fun, Crotona Park is as beautiful and fun in winter as it is in every other season. Look for the slope behind Ballfield #3, you won’t regret it.

Claremont Park – Local FamilyFriendly Hill

Clay Ave &, 8016, E 170th St., Morrisania Though more known for its pool than its sledding, Claremont Park is still a great local place to bring your kids and have a fantastic snow day.

Franz Sigel Park – Open Space Near Yankee Stadium Walton Ave. & Gerard Ave., West Concourse Located right by Yankee Stadium, Franz Siegel Park offers a good stretch of open space for sledding. Head to 160th St between Grand Concourse and Walton Ave. for the best sledding spot in the park Where to Go Sledding in Brooklyn Fort Greene Park – Monument Hill Adventure Interior of the park at Willoughby Ave, Fort Greene/Clinton Hill The hill near the Prison Ship Martyrs monument is quite a wild ride. It surrounds all four sides of the monument, so it never gets too crowded, but the steepest and least crowded area is at the top of the hill. The hill is easily accessible from the park’s Willoughby Ave. entrance.

Hillside Park – Slopes with Brooklyn Bridge Views Middagh and Vine streets, Brooklyn Heights

With a name like Hillside, you know you’re in for a few slopes. This park also boasts a dog run, so bring the family pooch along on your sledding adventure. The park is located in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Brooklyn Heights promenade.

Lincoln Terrace Park – Quiet Sledding Spot Between Buffalo and Rochester Avenues, adjacent to Eastern Parkway service road, Brownsville/Crown Heights After a solid snowfall, this slope is as good as any in the city, and you might get the added bonus of smaller crowds than the bigger parks.

McKinley Park – Sledding with Amenities Fort Hamilton Parkway and 73rd St., Bay Ridge Don’t let its size fool you—this park has a solid hill that’s perfect on a snowy afternoon.

There’s also a playground, a dog run, and even a year-round public bathroom, making it a convenient stop for families who want to enjoy snow sledding in NYC. Owl’s Head Park – Waterfront Thrills Colonial Road and 68th St., Sunset Park On the border of Bay Ridge and Sunset Park, this park boasts not only an amazing skate park but a huge hill that seems to drop off into New York Harbor. It’s an exhilarating ride, indeed. Just be aware that there are no public restrooms in Owl’s Head Park.

Prospect Park – Popular Hills for All Neighborhoods Near the Tennis House at Prospect Park West

and 9th Street The hills here attract sledders from Flatbush, Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Windsor Terrace, and beyond. The most popular slope is near the old tennis house and the current picnic house (nearest entrance is on Prospect Park West and 9th Street), but if that’s too crowded, try the one in the meadow off Grand Army Plaza or the one behind the Picnic House, at the Third St. entrance.

Shore Road Park – Big Hill Adventure Shore Road and 97th St., Bay Ridge The big hill here is hard to miss. It may be a bit steep for young kids and/or beginner sledders. The good news is that there are three year-round bathrooms in the park.

Sunset Park – High Hill with Harbor Views Interior of the park between 42nd and 43rd streets, Sunset Park Here you’ll find one of the highest points on all of Long Island (meaning the entire fishshaped glacial land mass from Brooklyn to Montauk Point). Yes, this hill is a shredder’s paradise, and if it’s a clear day, Lady Liberty will be waving from the gorgeous vista of New York Harbor. Bathrooms are located in the Recreation Center.

Fort Tryon Park – Scenic Hudson River Slopes Riverside Drive To Broadway, W. 192 St. To Dyckman St., Upper West Side Hit the slopes at one of the city’s most beautiful outdoor spaces. Take in beautiful views of the Hudson River while gliding down the slippery slopes of Billings Lawn.

Carl Schurz Park – East River Sledding for All Ages East End Ave. To East River, E 84 St. to E. 90 St., Upper East Side This naturally breathtaking sledding hotspot runs along the East River and welcomes children of all ages. The family pets can even join in on the fun as this park is home to two dog runs.

Morningside Park – Steep Hill for Daring Sledders

W. 110 St. to W. 123 St, Manhattan Ave. to Morningside Ave., Upper West Side This park is known for its notoriously steep hill, perfect for daring sledders. Playgrounds can be found at the bottom of the hill for more snowy day fun!

Pilgrim Hill – Central Park’s Favorite Slope Central Park, East Side at 73rd St, Upper East Side Most Central Park visitors believe this to be the best sledding spot in the city because of its perfectly steep slope found just below the Conservatory Water.

Cedar Hill – Roomy Slopes with Scenic Views Central Park East Side from 76th to 79th St., Upper East Side Cedar Hill offers plenty of room for long, adventurous sled rides. From the top, you can view the Glade Arch and the beautiful red cedars for which it is known.

Riverside Park – Waterfront Winter Playground Riverside Dr. to Hudson River, W. 72 St.to W 153 St., Upper West Side As its name suggests, this park rests on our scenic western waterfront. Sculptures, movies, artwork, and children’s shows may be found year-round, while the seasons call for an exchange of roller-blades for ice-skates and skateboards for sleds. The bicycle and scooter trail becomes a sledder’s dream in the winter months.

St. Nicholas Park – Gentle Hills for Beginners St. Nicholas Ave., St. Nicholas Ter. bet. W. 128 St. and W. 141 St., Hamilton Heights Hills here are average in incline and should prove perfect for the beginner. Playgrounds are also found here in abundance.

Where to Go Sledding in Queens Astoria Park – Panoramic City Views 19th St. between Shore Blvd. (off Ditmars Blvd.), Astoria With a panoramic view of the skyscrapers of midtown Manhattan to the south and the Hell Gate Channel to the north, the scenery presents the diverse landscape of New York City. Enter at Ditmars Blvd. between 19th St. and Shore Blvd.. If your little ones need a bathroom break during an afternoon of speeding down the slopes, head for the yearround restroom near the playground at Shore

Blvd. (opposite 23rd Road).

Crocheron Park – Small FamilyFriendly Hill 35th Ave. (opposite Golden Pond), Bayside / Little Neck There’s a sweet sledding hill on 35th Ave. near 216th St. Bring the family dog along and enjoy the park’s dog run by the gazebos (west of 35th Ave. and Cross Island Parkway).

Lower Highland Park – Plateau with Scenic Views Jamaica Ave. and Elton St., Cypress Hills Since this park is located on a high plateau that straddles Queens and Brooklyn, sledders are rewarded with stunning views of surrounding neighborhoods, the ocean, and nearby cemeteries. (Note that Highland is more easily accessible on the Brooklyn side.)

Kissena Park – Hill by the Lake Enter at Metcalf Ave. and 164th St., East Flushing / Fresh Meadows The hill is just east of Kissena Lake. There is a year-round bathroom located on the northeast edge of the park, near Oak Ave.. There’s also a playground nearby, at Rose and Oak avenues.

Bowne Park – Hill for Kids Small hillside on the 155th St. side of the park, Flushing Best for the little ones in your brood. A year-round bathroom is located in the park at 155th St. and 32nd Ave. Forest Park – Friendly Hills Mary Whelan Playground at 79th St. and Park Lane South, Kew Gardens / Forest Hills Tots can tackle this hill easily. This park is also easily accessible from the Glendale, Richmond Hill, and Woodhaven neighborhoods.

The Mary Whelan Playground is one of seven playgrounds in the park, which is also home to the Forest Park Carousel. With seven year-round bathrooms spread throughout, it’s a great family-friendly place to combine playground time with NYC sledding fun.

Juniper Valley Park – Popular Snowy Spot Juniper Blvd. North and South, near the Tennis Building at 75th St., Middle Village As one of Queens’ most popular parks, you might find a crowd here on a snowy weekend.

First Year at Sleepaway Camp?

What parents need to know

ending your child to overnight camp for the first time is an exciting time for your family and of course, you want it to be a successful summer. Here are some tips on how you can help make your child’s first year away a great one!

Label Everything – If it is going in the trunk, it should be labeled! Camp life means there are a bunch of kids all living together and items are sure to be mixed up from time to time. Making sure to label all items—from clothes to shampoo—will help misplaced items get back to your camper.

Leave Nice Items Home – Camp is messy, in the best of ways. Playing sports outside, eating ice cream on a hot day and walking down to the lake after a rainstorm are all part of a day at camp. If your child has a favorite hoodie or pair of sweats and you would like it to come home looking nice, leave it at home.

Do Not Overpack – You want to make sure your child has all the items on the packing list the camp sent but try not to go overboard on the extras. Campers do not have a ton of space to put their things and lots of the extras never get used. Also, some campers find that too much stuff can be overwhelming when they cannot find the items they need.

Share Positive Messages and Avoid Pick-Up Deals – It is common for your child (and you) to have nerves as camp approaches.

Sharing positive messages about camp and not putting your own anxiety on your child is important. Avoid making pick up deals with your child before they leave for camp. If you let your child know you will pick them up if they want to come home, you are sending the message that you do not believe they will be successful at camp.

Send Mail – Make sure to write your child throughout the summer. Whether you send a one-way email or a handwritten note, letters from home mean a lot to campers. Try not to write about your amazing vacation or how much fun a younger sibling is having at home. Although unintentional, this type of

news can make your child feel like they are missing out. Keep letters light and positive and reassure your child that you know they are having the best time at camp.

Stay Calm If You Receive a Homesick Letter – If you get a letter home from your child that they miss home and want to go home, try to stay calm. You can feel helpless when you are so far away from your child but know it is common for children to miss home. Often times, kids write during downtime at camp and these moments are often fleeting feelings. There is a good chance the homesick moment will have passed by the time you get the letter. If the homesickness is really bad and affecting your child’s experience, you would have already heard from the director. Call the camp director to understand how your child is feeling.

Do Not Cause Drama on Group Chat – Often times, parents will start a group chat for their child’s bunk. While it is nice to connect with the other parents, try not to start drama on the chat. If you have a concern about something happening at camp, contact the camp director directly to discuss what is bothering you.

Respect Camp Policies – Each camp has

its own policies, from sending packages to technology that is allowed at camp. Please respect the policies. Don’t hide food or phones when packing or buy bunk gifts when they aren’t allowed. If you do, you are sending a message to your child that rules do not apply.

Visiting Day is About Quality Time – Visiting Day is all about spending time with your child. It’s not about how much food and stuff you can bring or about having your entire extended family there. Let your child guide how the day will go and participate in the things your child wants to share with you.

Do Not Obsess Over Camp Photos – It is hard not to analyze each picture posted of your child but keep in mind that each photo is just a moment in time. If your child is not smiling, it does not mean they are unhappy at camp. Maybe they were caught off-guard by the photo or participating in a camp activity.

If you are worried, contact the director.

Remember that the camp director is your partner this summer and they are there to help guide you through any worries or situations that arise, both before camp and during. The first year of camp is truly special with so many firsts—enjoy the amazing gift of camp you have given your child!

NYC Schools, Explained Understanding your options

hoosing a school for your child can happen anytime, not just at the start of the academic year. You may be planning for next school year, navigating a mid-year move, or looking for a new option as your child transitions from daycare to elementary school.

Whether they’re moving up to middle school or simply in need of a better educational fit, it’s natural to worry about making the right decision. In many areas of the country, traditional district public schools may be the best, and sometimes the only option for kids. However, New York City families aren’t limited to traditional public schools; they can also explore charter, independent (private), magnet, and religious school options.

Each school type has advantages, and no single model is universally “better.” It’s about finding what works best for your child and family.

Here’s a breakdown of the key options: Charter Schools with Flexible Learning Options Charter Schools are public schools with fewer regulations. They are tuition-free public schools funded by local, state, and federal funds, yet operate independently of district control. NYC has around 285 charter schools serving nearly 150,000 students (about 15% of total public enrollment).

“Charter schools do not have the same oversight as public schools, but they need to be partially funded by the public government.

According to the New York State Education Department, a significant difference between charter schools and traditional public schools is that charter schools often focus on innovative

curricula, new approaches to school organization or instruction, or other features that conventional public schools cannot accomplish without the flexibility afforded by a charter.

However, Miele says charter schools need to produce strong NYS test results to continue funding, as many are more traditional in their teaching approach and teach toward those tests.

Independent Schools in NY with Unique Curriculum and Autonomy Also known as private schools, independent schools are primarily funded by tuition and charitable donations rather than taxpayer dollars. Families exploring the wide range of Private Schools in New York City can use this category to compare their missions, curricular styles, and academic approaches across independent institutions.

“Typically, independent schools do quite a bit of fundraising, and parents may be tasked with organizing some of it,” says Christine Hernandez, early childhood and parenting expert and founder of Allo Saratoga in New York State.

College Tour Tips Do’s and don’ts for parents

any New York and tri-state area parents and their college-bound students are either in the midst of college touring or will be taking advantage of upcoming winter breaks to venture out on campus tours. We chatted with one of the most trusted college counseling experts in the country, founder and CEO of Premium Prep College Counseling, Alyse Levine, who shared her tips for students and parents on maximizing their college campus tour experiences.

The Essentials to College Touring Register ASAP: Guided tour spots fill up fast, so make sure to register for a tour as soon as possible. One thing to keep in mind: signing up for an official tour means your name goes on the school’s mailing list. This can be a perk—continued updates keep your family informed, and at some colleges, demonstrated interest is tracked, making early engagement even more valuable.

If you’re unable to do an official tour, you can still engage with the admissions office in meaningful ways. Reach out to your regional admissions counselor with a few substantive questions, explore whether the school offers self-guided tours, or stop by the admissions office during your visit to let them know you’re on campus and want to learn more.

Take Notes & Ask Questions: If you visit multiple schools, they can start to blur together, so it’s helpful to capture specifics from each visit. Jot notes on your phone, take pictures, or even shoot short videos of things you want to remember on campus. These notes, photos, and videos will be invaluable as you refine your College List and craft collegespecific “Why Us” essays. Don’t hesitate to ask questions—whether to your tour guide or a student you encounter on campus. Now is the time to get answers and dig deeper into what makes each school unique.

Those small, unscripted moments often reveal more than the official presentation, and they can shape both your impression of the school and your approach as an applicant.

Meet & Greets: First-hand accounts from students and faculty can be both insightful and fun! Try to connect with a current student to get a sense of the student experience. Many schools have student ambassadors available for prospective applicants, which can be a great way to hear candid perspectives. If you know what you want to study, reach out to a professor in that department or see if you can sit in on a class. You may need to take the initiative to find people to meet, and all of this more personal outreach (emails, scheduling, followups, etc.) should come from you. Admissions offices can sometimes point you in the right direction, but taking charge yourself makes the experience more meaningful.

Do’s and Don’ts of Parenting a College Applicant: What you are doing to help your college-

bound child in the planning process may actually be hurting them… “We’re going to college!” Um, “we?” As parents, it can be easy to get into helicopter mode–researching schools on your own, talking to school counselors on your child’s behalf, creating checklists for your child to follow, compiling names of colleges to which they should apply, and suggesting people they should ask for recommendations.

Here are a few of Alyse’s Do’s and Don’ts of Parenting a College Applicant: DO listen to your child: Really listen to your child when they talk about their plans for the future. Try to understand their goals and know that their ideas and plans will change and evolve over time. It is important to let your child have autonomy over their college planning process. You are still the authority figure, and it is OK to offer your opinion and guidance, but be sure to keep your child and their perspective at the center.

DO offer some constructive feedback: Even if your child is fiercely independent and self-motivated and passed their English classes with flying colors, it’s a good idea to read over

resumes, essays, and other components of the college application. If your child does not feel comfortable letting you read their essays, ask if there are other trusted adults that they could ask for feedback, such as a teacher or mentor.

It is always helpful to get a second set of eyes on the application before it is submitted.

DO have honest conversations with your student about what you can afford: College is a huge investment. With the U.S. student debt at $1.8 trillion, it is important to have a transparent financial discussion with your child.

You may not want or need to provide every detail, but talk to your child about financial responsibility and the benefits and consequences of taking out student loans. Even if your student receives some scholarships or financial aid, chances are that it might not cover the full cost of four years.

DON’T stress over the “perfect” school: It’s easy for both students and parents to get caught up in rankings, prestige, or what everyone else thinks is ideal, but there’s no single “perfect” college. Encourage your child to focus on their fit to the school: academics, campus culture, extracurricular opportuni-

ties, and overall vibe. Remind them (and yourself) that stress and pressure rarely help the process. Balance is key: guide, observe, and support, but let your child form their own opinions.

DON’T underestimate small details: Brochures and websites only tell part of the story. Sometimes the most revealing insights come from more discrete observations: how students interact, how professors talk about their subjects, or even what is posted on university social media pages. Encourage your child to notice these subtle cues and reflect on what they mean for their own experience.

These small details often shape impressions more than anything in a formal presentation, and they can be valuable when you have to write truly distinctive essays or make college list decisions.

DON’T run the show: From choosing which tours to attend to how and when to follow up, all of these decisions should largely be driven by your student. Step back and let them take the lead while you provide guidance and encouragement! Resist the urge to micromanage. This is their journey.

Allow them to make mistakes; the confidence they gain from owning it will make a real difference in how they approach the application process and their campus visits.

How to Talk to Your Child’s Teacher without being THAT parent

W

hen my son was in elementary school, one of his classmates’ parents seemed to have a dire need to speak with the teacher at dismissal every day. The teacher was as gracious as she could possibly be, at least from what I observed, but I could tell this parent was grinding on her last nerve.

One day, the parent chatted me up while we were waiting for our kids to come out. She complained about the difficulty of the math homework, and while I agreed it was tough – my son was having his own troubles with it – she went on to complain about the teacher (who likely did not create the curriculum in the first place). Moments later, the class appeared and she made a beeline straight for the teacher. I shook my head and decided to save my own math inquiries for the upcoming parent teacher conference.

While I understand the importance of

advocating for your child, there is a time and a place for it. I never forgot that parent and always wondered if her incessant demands of the teacher worked out negatively for her child. To be honest, after witnessing her daily display of entitlement, I never wanted to approach a teacher at dismissal again. I stuck to emails, mostly. But I always wondered where the line is drawn between a parent/teacher relationship when it comes to communication. I never, ever want to be THAT parent.

I spoke with Anne Josephson, Psy.D., M.S. Ed., clinical psychologist and the owner of NYC-based Uptown Psychology, as well as a former special education teacher and school psychologist, to get a better picture of an effective dynamic between parents and teachers.

JC: How can a parent secure a good relationship with a teacher?

AJ: A strong parent–teacher relationship begins early in the school year. Introducing yourself, expressing openness, and interest

in the teacher’s approach helps to establish rapport. Trust develops over time, but parents can set a positive tone when they assume the teacher is coming from a good place.

Additionally, respect for the teacher’s role is helpful in building a warm parent-teacher relationship.

Parents make thoughtful choices about the schools their children attend. Part of that trust extends to believing the school has hired capable, caring educators. I often remind families that people enter teaching because they genuinely care about children and want to support their growth. Starting from this shared purpose helps build a collaborative relationship.

JC: When are appropriate and inappropriate times to approach a teacher?

AJ: It is best to approach a teacher when they appear both physically and emotionally available for conversation. Parents often try to use drop-off or pick-up because the timing feels easy and convenient. However, these are typically high-demand times for teachers.

Anne’s Do’s and Don’ts for Communicating with Teachers

They are managing transitions, attending to student safety, and preparing for the start or end of the day. Unless the message is a quick reminder, it is difficult for teachers to offer the attention a meaningful conversation requires.

A better approach is to briefly let the teacher know during drop-off or pick-up that you would like to schedule time to talk and possibly a little bit about what you would like to speak about. Example, “I’m going to send you an email to discuss strategies for transitioning to school.” This sets the stage for a calm, productive discussion. A followup email outlining what you’d like to address, as well as your availability, is best. Most teachers can fit in a short meeting before school, after school, or during a designated prep period.

JC: When a parent is upset with something that happened in the classroom, how should they go about speaking to the teacher?

AJ: When something upsetting occurs, I encourage parents to go directly (and respectfully) to the teacher before involving

other professionals. While it may feel uncomfortable, speaking to the teacher first allows them to provide context and answer any questions you may have. Starting the conversation from a place of assuming the best helps reduce defensiveness and creates space for honest communication.

Teachers take their responsibility seriously and approaching them with openness typically leads to much more productive outcomes. It also models to our children that we are working as a team.

During the school year, your child’s teacher

is spending more time with them than you.

In many ways they are an extension of your family for that period of time, and we should do our best to treat it as that. Last week, I felt frustrated as a parent when my child had an accident at school, and no one called me, but rather shared this with a babysitter. The next day, when going through my school’s app, I found a whole note from the teacher about the fall. While I really appreciate her sharing this information with me, I intend to ask her to call or text me with anything related to injuries so that I am able to see it faster.

Impact: The End of the Age of Dinosaurs Exhibit

million years ago, a giant asteroid hit the earth at a whopping 45,000 miles per hour and changed the course of life on our planet. Today, the American Museum of Natural History is telling the story in a fascinating and educational new exhibit called “Impact: The End of the Age of Dinosaurs.”

Impact transports visitors to a time before, during and after the catastrophic event occurred via interactive installments, immersive videos and realistic displays.

The exhibit features life-size models of a 27-foot mosasaur, a 30-foot long-necked plesiosaur, and other extinct species such as Triceratops. Visitors can explore touchable displays, including a cast of a mosasaur tooth, a real Triceratops toe fossil, a cast of Triceratops skin, and a fossil ammonite.

A stunning diorama showcases the diversity of Cretaceous life in what is now the western United States, while an immersive panoramic video brings the dramatic asteroid impact to life alongside a digital interactive that explains how scientists track near-Earth

objects. Additional video stories highlight how modern conservation efforts can help protect today’s biodiversity.

While Impact unveils a harrowing account of the extinction of 75% of earth’s species, it’s not a tale of mere mass destruction. The exhibit is intended to showcase how life persisted after the event, a true story of regrowth and new beginnings.

“Impact doesn’t just tell the dramatic story about the asteroid strike that wiped out the nonavian dinosaurs, it shows how science enables us to peer into that long-gone time: what the world was like, what animals roamed, and of course, the planet-wide environmental cataclysm that the asteroid triggered,” explains Museum President Sean M. Decatur. “It’s also a story about the resilience of life and of our planet. Some species survived, new ecosystems flourished, and eventually these developments led to the evolution of humans and the world we know today. It’s a fascinating, extraordinary story like no other.”

One of the most interesting parts of the exhibit is the digital interactive offering visitors a hands-on look at the advanced tools used to track near-Earth objects today, even letting

guests “test” potential deflection technologies that could help prevent a future asteroid impact. While the odds are slim of such an event happening again anytime soon, it’s comforting to know that scientists are working hard to keep us safe.

“What makes this exhibition so exciting is how much of the story we can now tell through science,” says lead curator Roger Benson.

“Advances in paleontology and geochemistry have given us an unprecedented look at what happened before, during, and after the asteroid hit—including how ecosystems collapsed, adapted, and ultimately flourished again.”

The American Museum of Natural History paleontology houses an expansive collection of specimens, including more than 5 million fossil invertebrates and approximately 500,000 fossil vertebrates, one of the largest in the world. Museum paleontologists study the history of life on Earth through the discovery, analysis, and description of fossil remains of dinosaurs and other reptiles, mammals, birds, fishes, and invertebrates.

“Impact: The End of the Age of Dinosaurs” is now open to the public at the American Museum of Natural History, located at 200 Central Park West, daily 10 am to 5:30 pm.
