There are a variety of things to see and do, from our nationally accredited County Parks System, to historic landmarks, to our active art exhibits, top-rated restaurants and more.

Westchester County is a desirable place to live, and for good reason. We are blessed with the beauty of the Long Island Sound and the Hudson River, as well as quaint towns and villages for you to discover with family and friends. Our mass transportation system can get you into the heart of New York City in less than an hour, but we are far enough away to maintain our peaceful tranquility. These qualities are all part of the fabric that make our County the best place for you to call home.

t seems like not much is free these days.

However, after thinking about it a little more, we realized that so many things in Westchester actually don’t a thing. With access to breathtaking hiking trails, picnic spots, sprawling lakes, nature preserves, farms, and gardens, you and your family can enjoy many offerings in our communal background. Arts and culture are also big in Westchester where you and your family can enjoy free concerts, art exhibits, movies, community events, parades, festivals, and holiday events throughout the year. Read on to check out our top experiences to enjoy with your kids all year long.

1. Take a free art class at the Blue Door Art 10 Welcome to Westchester | 2023–2024

2. Visit Muscoot Farm: Families will love visiting this working farm to see pigs, horses, chickens, cows, and goats up close. You can also explore their grounds, enjoy a picnic, and pick up some local goodies from their farmers’ market every Sunday. Don’t forget to take a picture on the red tractor before you go! 5. Enjoy Summer Sundays along the Bronx River Parkway. Enjoy the popular Summer Sundays where you and your family will have access to the 13.1-mile loop of the Bronx River Parkway which spans from White Plains to Yonkers without any cars. Free admission.

6. Walk, Bike, or Scoot on the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge: This 3.6-mile path (from Tarrytown to Nyack) provides access for walking, biking, or scooting. Along the way enjoy spectacular views from six lookout sections as well as cool public art created by local artists.

Families can also enjoy fun and educational programming for kids of all ages at their local library (or check out a new one) such as African dance, storytime for toddlers, video game tournaments, Fortnite for teens, arts and crafts, tutoring, seasonal offerings, and more. Spend the day at one of the area’s local book festivals: Throughout the County, you can find many book fairs where your kids can meet their favorite authors and illustrators such as the Westchester Children’s Book Festival (April 2024); Rye Children’s Book Festival (September 23rd); and the Chappaqua Children’s Book Festival (September 30th).

Explore the Greenburgh Nature Center.

25. Explore the Westchester Waterfronts: Many Westchester towns are located along the Hudson River, offering incredible views all year long. This 17-mile trail connects 13 farms in Westchester, from Sleepy Hollow to North Salem. Great for older kids and experienced walkers as you see the different sprawling landscapes in the area. Free admission.

36. See a Movie Outdoors: Have a family movie night outdoors at Outdoor Movies in the Park in Larchmont; Movies in the Sand in Mamaroneck; Movie Mondays in Ridge Hill; or at the Kensico Dam Plaza. Free admission.

irdwatching is a great way to get in touch with nature. It’s also an activity that everyone in the family can enjoy together.

And there are endless opportunities right here in Westchester. Check out this yearround guide and Happy Bird Watching!

In Westchester Croton Point Park Croton-On-Hudson, NY 10520 Located in the beautiful Hudson River, this 508-acre park offers incredible access to view birds. Its location on the river makes it an ideal spot to locate bald eagles who use the area for breeding. Over 250 species of birds have been spotted here.

Edith G. Read Natural Park and Wildlife Sanctuary 1 Playland Pkwy, Rye, NY 10580 This 179-acre wildlife sanctuary offers access to the shoreline on Long Island Sound, Manursing Lake, wetlands, and numerous trails.

It is designated as an “important bird area” by the Audubon Society of New York where you will find numerous nature exhibits, a bird viewing window, and the home of 5,000 ducks.

Nearby Rye beach also offers incredible views for bird watching.

Birds to look for include: Spring: Migrating scooters, northern gannet.

Summer: Great blue herons, loons, bank swallow, lesser yellowlegs.

in NYC If looking to explore birdwaching beyond Westchester, birding in NYC can be very fun. Despite the Big Apple being a bustling metropolis, there are still lots of places to see nature, including birds. See, our city is located along the Atlantic Flyway, which is sort of like the I-95 highway for migratory birds. They fly from areas near and far all year long, especially during spring, so they need places to rest and refresh. (Whereas we humans like to stop at Starbucks or Applebee’s on long family road trips, migratory birds use New York City as one of their favorite rest stops!)

there are plenty more places to see birds, of course. Birders throughout the city have seen and identified the birds in this guide.

It’s important to mention that it’s never guaranteed that you’ll see any or all of these feathered friends when you’re birdwatching, but half the fun is in trying to spot them! Designated an Important Bird Area by National Audubon, over 250 species have been recorded here.

These hikes range from simple for the youngest walkers to more adventurous hikes that you can build up to. These parks and preserves also offer educational and fun programming during the year such as maple sugaring, community trail runs, preschool programs, summer camps, and more.

he beauty of living in Westchester is not just having access to some incredible hikes and nature preserves but also having towns located right on the Hudson River.

Westchester waterfronts offers incredible views, along with playgrounds, restaurants, and nearby homes.

Many of the waterfront towns will soon by connected via the Westchester RiverWalk, a planned 51.5-mile pathway that will link 14 municipalities, historic sites, parks and river via a connection of trails, esplanades and boardwalks.

Read on to check out some waterfronts to explore when the weater permits with your family — and beyond.

Dobbs Ferry Waterfront Park This waterfront park boasts incredible views of the Hudson Valley and the Palisades. Find community events and concerts in the spring and summer and the go-to location for 4th of July fireworks viewing.
