Take photos at Snug Harbor. Spend a day enjoying the beauty of Snug Harbor’s picturesque botanical gardens and snap the perfect shot for your new profile pic. The grounds are free to enter; most gardens are free.

Join in library programs. Most Staten Island library branches offer educational and fun programs for toddlers up to teens.

Ride the Carousel for All Children at Willowbrook Park. A single ride ticket is $3.

Join Urban Park Rangers Programs. The ranger-led programs teach kids to appreciate nature and wildlife and learn outdoor survival skills. They are free and offered through the Parks Dept. in public green spaces throughout the city.

Visit a nature center. Learn all about local ecology from a nature center, most of which offer special programming for kids. In Staten Island, you can visit the Greenbelt Nature Center and the Blue Heron Nature Center.

Search for Monarch butterflies in Clove Lakes Park. The beautiful butterflies can be seen at the start of summer here in Staten Island, New York City.

Look for cool creatures. While you’re at Clove Lakes Park looking for butterflies, see if you can find the park’s resident muskrats, turtles and birds, too!

Visit the National Lighthouse Museum. This North Shore museum is located just a few steps from the ferry and offers events throughout the year and a variety of themed boat tours.

Cruise the FDR Boardwalk. Go for a beachside stroll on the boardwalk while taking in the magnificent views of Staten Island’s iconic Verrazano Bridge.

Go to the zoo. Spend an afternoon with sloths, Amur leopards and more at the Staten Island Zoo. Tickets are just $6 for kids and admission is free or by donation on Wednesday afternoons.

Go window shopping at Empire Outlets.

Staten Island is home to NYC’s only outlet destination, and it’s located right on the waterfront. Window shopping is a lot more fun with a view.

Cedar Stars Academy Staten Island is a travel club with teams that train and compete from Mid-August through Mid-June at the College of Staten Island. Teams will compete in Fall, Spring and Winter Events and play in both the EDP League and The National Academy League.

We are the only Club on Staten Island with a true Player Development Pathway through our associated branches in New Jersey who are a part of the Girls Academy and the MLS youth platform, which allow us to push our best players onto the next level of competition if that is where they need to be.

Look for harbor seals in winter. Grab some binoculars and head to Staten Island’s shorelines to spot these adorable marine mammals sunning themselves on rocks or swimming in the water. Mount Loretto Unique Area on the South Shore is a great place to look for them.

Explore Sandy Ground. Did you know the oldest continuously inhabited free Black settlement in the United States is located in Rossville? Book a guided tour to learn more.

Find Yourself at Art Lab

rt Lab is an Art School and Gallery located on the beautiful grounds of Snug Harbor Cultural Center, offering fine art, applied art and photography classes during the winter, spring, summer and fall seasons. Founded by artists 48 years ago as an artist collective, today Art Lab classes are still taught by professional teaching artists who studied art in college and have continued to practice art making and exhibiting work. Classes are available for children, young artists, teens, and adults, starting at age 3 with Pre-k Art. At Art Lab, children enjoy the tradition of creative art making, learning from real artists mostly living in the Staten Island community. Camp Picasso for children and Camp Kandinsky for preschoolers are summer staples at Art Lab where children make art in various media such as drawing, painting, collaging and sculpting. All campers receive a free Art Lab t-shirt to color on their first day of camp. Weather permitting, campers will explore the grounds and play. Full and half days are available. Rolling registration all summer long, until camp fills, and session options for 2,4,6 or 8 weeks makes it convenient and flexible for busy summer schedules.

Art classes are available all year, including summer, for children and adults. Children’s Art, Young People’s Art, Comic Book Art, Pre-K Art, Teen Ceramic, Teen Painting and Drawing,

Anime and Manga are some offerings for youth. Adults classes include painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, jewelry making, drone flight, digital photo, watercolor, and stained glass. Art Lab provides many other services to the Staten Island community with programs, events, and gallery exhibitions. For those looking for a more involved arts program, there is the Summer Studio Scholarship Program intensive, where teen and adult students refine their arts skills in a studio setting working with university level teaching artists. Art Lab also hosts birthday parties, Girl Scout art badge workshops and class visits too.

ow that spring is in full bloom, it’s time to start thinking about ways your family can enjoy the great outdoors on Staten Island. One easy way to embrace nature as a family is to have a picnic! There are many places where families can have a picnic on Staten Island. From beachside locales to historical sprawling grounds, there are many picnic spots located throughout the borough.

Great Kills Park – Gateway National Recreation Area WHERE: Hylan Boulevard and Buffalo Street PHONE: 718-354-4606 HOURS: Daily, 6am-9pm Great Kills Park is a 523-acre park that is part of the National Park Service. Families can enjoy the park any time of year, but come summer, it’s a great place for a picnic on the beach. Amenities include a life-guarded beach, hiking trails, biking trails and more.

Right at the southernmost end of Staten Island is Conference House Park, site of a 1776 peace conference that attempted to end the Revolutionary War. Families can toss a blanket on the lawn or under a tree to enjoy a picnic.

After dining, children can toss a ball, play and simply run on the sprawling lawn. Park-goers can walk along the beach or hike into the woods to enjoy nature. Kids—and adults— will get a kick out of seeing New Jersey right across the water!

The Alice Austen House grounds provide scenic views and sprawling lawns perfect for a family picnic. While you’re there, consider stopping in the museum to learn about Alice Austen, one of the earliest and most prolific female photographers in the United States.

Willowbrook Park is a woodland escape from the hustle and bustle of every day life.

Clay Pit Ponds State Park Preserve WHERE: 83 Nielsen Ave. PHONE: 718-967-1976 HOURS: Grounds are open year round, sunrise to sunset Clay Pit Ponds is a state park off the beaten path on the South Shore. A hidden gem, it’s a 265-acre nature preserve that is home to many habitats, including wetlands, ponds, sand barrens, spring-fed streams and woods.

Visitors can picnic and hike on designated trails within the park. Keep a look out for cool wildlife, such as deer, squirrels and lots of birds!

Birdwatching in NYC

ew Yorkers and tourists have been flocking to Central Park, hoping to get a glimpse of Flaco, the now-famous owl who flew from his enclosure at the Central Park Zoo in February. After zookeepers gave up their efforts to recover him, the free bird has become a sight to see in the wild. But did you know you can see equally majestic birds all throughout NYC? It’s true! There are so many places to enjoy birdwatching in NYC, including parks, shorelines, even your own backyard.

In celebration of birds, we did some research, spoke to several bird and nature experts and visited lots of local parks to create this guide to some of the best places to

see birds in springtime and throughout the year in NYC. Birdwatching in NYC: A Fun Family Activity Birdwatching is a great way to get in touch with nature. It’s also an activity that everyone in the family can enjoy together.

“Anyone can bird,” Roslyn Rivas, public programs manager for NYC Audubon, said.

“Just being connected with nature is such a positive thing for individuals, but to share it with someone else really can foster a sense of community. You can all learn together. And the more eyes you have when you’re birding, the more likely you’ll see birds.”

And birding in NYC can be very fun.

metropolis, there are still lots of places to see nature, including birds. See, our city is located along the Atlantic Flyway, which is sort of like the I-95 highway for migratory birds.

They fly from areas near and far all year long, especially during spring, so they need places to rest and refresh. (Whereas we humans like to stop at Starbucks or Applebee’s on long family road trips, migratory birds use New York City as one of their favorite rest stops!)

So, what is about NYC that’s so appealing to migratory birds? Basically, the habitat here is lush and diverse, providing ideal living quarters for so many traveling bird species.

“New York is so heavily urbanized but we have a lot of great green spaces,” Rivas said, adding that green roofs throughout the city also help provide habitat for birds.

In Staten Island, which is also known as the borough of parks, habitat is diverse and plentiful for migrating birds, too.

“Staten Island is an extraordinary place to go birdwatching,” said Cliff Hagen, president of Protectors of Pine Oak Woods, an organization that works to save the borough’s natural heritage and open spaces.

“If you were to go up 30,000 feet and look down at New York City, you have the Hudson River, Long Island Sound in Long Island, and it all converges on Staten Island. Hundreds of species of birds migrate through Staten Island as they’re going north and south every year.

The topography of Staten Island lends itself to bird migration.”

Of course, not all birds are just passing through the city. Some live here all year long (these are called “resident birds”). NYC resident birds include bluejays, mourning doves, pigeons, mallards and many others that live in parks, your backyard, or really anywhere birds fly.

If you’re wondering if the migrant birds get along with the resident birds--for the most part, they do!

Staten Island Museums Alice Austen House 2 Hylan Blvd.

This museum was once the home of Alice Austen, one of America’s most prolific woman photographers. Austen took approximately 8,000 images throughout her lifetime. Garibaldi-Meucci Museum 420 Tompkins Ave. The museum spotlights Giuseppe Garibaldi, an Italian general and patriot, and Antonio Meucci, an Italian inventor, engineer. The museum works to promote Italian-American heritage through a variety of cultural and educational programs and classes.
