The Schnalstal Valley & its villages

Nestled in the majestic mountain landscape of South Tyrol, the Schnalstal Valley combines unspoiled nature, millennia-old traditions, and modern recreation. Whether skiing on the glacier, hiking to historic alpine pastures, or discovering Ötzi’s world – here, adventure and history merge.

For centuries, the Schnalstal Valley was a remote mountain farming valley, isolated from the outside world by the impassable rocky gorge at its entrance. With the construction of the connecting road to the Vinschgau Valley, a new era began. As early as the beginning of the 20th century, modest alpine tourism started to develop, but the major economic upswing came with the opening of the glacier cable car in 1975, which brought ski tourism to the valley. Today, the Schnalstal ski area serves as a training destination for international teams and is an attractive spot for winter sports enthusiasts of all kinds.

A world-famous highlight is Ötzi, the Iceman, whose discovery in 1991 has provided researchers worldwide with insights into the Neolithic Age. His story is vividly presented at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano. In Madonna di Senales, with a direct view of the discovery site, the archeoParc invites visitors to explore Ötzi’s world in an interactive and engaging way.

Another unique highlight is the annual sheep drive across the main Alpine ridge. An impressive spectacle that was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2019 and attracts many visitors. The Schnalstal Valley offers unforgettable experiences in every season – a hidden gem for connoisseurs, nature lovers, and active holidaymakers.

High above the entrance to the Schnalstal Valley rises Monte Santa Caterina, with its striking church tower perched on a rocky plateau. The parish church stands on the ruins of Schnals Castle, which was destroyed in 1350. The present building dates back to 1499. Monte Santa Caterina is an idyllic mountain village in a sunny, climatically favored location. From here, the view over the valley and the Vinschgau is truly breathtaking. Monte Santa Caterina is also the starting point for the Merano High Mountain Trail, the “Path of Silence,” the oldest high alpine pasture in South Tyrol, and many other rewarding hikes in the Texel Group Nature Park.

From Monte Santa Caterina, the “Path of Silence” (Via Monachorum) leads to the quiet and mysterious village of Certosa. Every Monday from mid-May to mid-October, guided tours of the former Carthusian monastery of Allerengelberg take place. A hike from the pilgrimage church in Madonna di Senales to the monastery in Certosa is also offered.

MONTE SANTA CATERINA 1.245 m ü. M.

PFOSSENTAL VALLEY 1.693 - 2.875 m ü. M.

The Pfossental Valley, the largest side valley of Schnalstal, leads hikers into the heart of the unspoiled landscape of the Texel Group Nature Park, rich in wildlife. Refreshments or even overnight accommodation along the Merano High Mountain Trail can be found in the former farmsteads of the upper valley, which are managed as alpine pastures from May to November. Along the route from Vorderkaserhof to Eishof, the Pfossental Alpine Experience Trail (p. 28) unfolds. With information panels and interactive elements, visitors can discover many fascinating facts about this unique natural and cultural landscape.

CERTOSA 1.327 m ü. M.

The settlement of Certosa developed within the walls of the Carthusian monastery of Allerengelberg (p. 9), founded in 1326 and dissolved in 1782. Its monastic cells and church were subsequently converted into homes by farmers and craftsmen. Despite a devastating fire in 1924, many interesting details have been preserved. The “Silentium” project is dedicated to silence - a legacy of the monks that still shapes this place today. Art exhibitions are held within the monastery walls every two years.

DI SENALES 1.508 m ü. M.

On the flat valley floor surrounding the Baroque pilgrimage church (p. 11) lies the largest settlement in the valley, the village of Madonna di Senales. This probably oldest Marian pilgrimage site in Tyrol dates back to as early as 1304. Moments of reflection amid a magnificent natural landscape can be found along the Marian pilgrimage trail or the “Path of Silence.” For more action, the archeoParc (p. 15) offers a different experience. South Tyrol’s first archaeological activity museum, with its surrounding open-air area, presents the habitat of the Iceman, as well as the culture and daily life of his time 5,300 years ago.

MADONNA

Vernago is located on the sunny shores of the reservoir of the same name, which was built between 1949 and 1964. A fertile valley floor with farms and a small church had to give way to the water. Gradually, a new settlement developed along the lakeshore. Unique highlights include the circular lake walk with its two suspension bridges, as well as the high-altitude hike from Tisenhof via Raffeinhof to Finailhof. For experienced hikers, the route through the Tisental Valley to the Similaun Hut and the discovery site of the Iceman is particularly challenging. Each year in mid-June, more than 2,000 sheep are driven through this valley to the summer pastures in the Vent Valley (A), returning again in mid-September (p. 117).

The village was once a secluded high-alpine idyll. Since the construction of the glacier cable car to the 3,212-meter-high Grawand and the development of the Hochjochferner glacier in the 1970s, Maso Corto has evolved into a ski center with numerous sports facilities. Around 42 kilometers of slopes of all difficulty levels, two high-altitude cross-country trails, and perfectly groomed winter hiking paths offer ideal conditions for an eventful winter holiday. In summer, Maso Corto is a starting point for alpine high-mountain tours, half-day or full-day hikes to alpine pastures and farms, and for those seeking action, there is a via ferrata as well as an exciting ride on mountain carts.

History & Culture

CARTHUSIAN MONASTERY OF CERTOSA

The Carthusian monastery of Allerengelberg was founded in 1326 and dissolved in 1782. The small houses built onto the cloister - formerly the monks’ living quarters - were sold to interested smallholders and craftsmen from the valley. In 1924, a devastating fire struck the village, yet many original details have been preserved. The cloister, the grotto, the prior’s house, and the monastery kitchen, as well as the enclosing wall of the monastery, the Crucifixion group, the monastery gate, and St. Anne’s Church can all be visited year-round. The cloister, which has lost none of its charm, serves as an exhibition space for artists during the summer months.

SILENTIUM, THE LEGACY OF THE CARTHUSIANS

Certosa has a unique history: the village developed from a Carthusian monastery. For 450 years, monks lived here according to the very strict rules of their order - they even refrained from speaking. Their silence still lingers over Certosa today. The former monastery complex is still clearly recognizable within the village. In the cloister, a film tells the eventful history of the charterhouse through poetic images: its foundation in 1326, the monks’ lives in complete solitude, and finally the dissolution of the monastery ordered by Emperor Joseph II. Over time, poor families from the surrounding area moved into the former monks’ cells. In this way, the charterhouse gradually became the village of Certosa, which today has around 300 inhabitants. The circular walk through the former monastery complex is freely accessible, as is the Via Monachorum - a hiking trail lined with philosophical quotes about silence.

GUIDED TOUR OF THE FORMER CARTHUSIAN MONASTERY OF ALLERENGELBERG

From 1326 to 1782, the Carthusian monastery of Allerengelberg was located in Certosa. It was dissolved under Emperor Joseph II, yet the spirit of the monks still lives on in the cloister. During the guided tour of the monastery, participants are introduced to its art-historical and architectural features, as well as the daily life and work of the Carthusian monks.

„Merano-Val Senales“

PILGRIMAGE CHURCH OF MADONNA DI SENALES

The church on the rock is a protected monument and divides the village into two parts. In addition to the Baroque pilgrimage church, the cemetery with its artistically crafted grave crosses in copper and bronze - created by local artists Friedrich Gurschler and Martin Rainer - is also well worth seeing. Madonna di Senales is one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in Tyrol and was first documented in 1304. The church is open during the day.

MARIAN PILGRIMAGE TRAIL

The beautifully designed Marian Pilgrimage Trail leads from the Texel sports area south of the village through a magnificent larch forest to the pilgrimage church. Along the way, stations depict important scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. The carvings were created by local artists and invite visitors to pause and reflect.

IN SILENCE LIES STRENGTH – HIKE FROM THE CHURCH TO THE MONASTERY

The pilgrimage church of Madonna di Senales is the starting point for this approximately 2.5-hour hike. The route follows the Via Monachorum, passing a waterfall, the ancient Schnalstal larch tree, and fresh mountain springs, leading to the former Carthusian monastery of Allerengelberg in Certosa. And there? Silence. This is followed by a guided tour through the “village of silence” and the former monastery complex of the Carthusian monks, who lived here for centuries in silence and solitude, serving God. Experience for yourself how soothing silence can be.

FARMING CULTURE

TRACING ITS ORIGINS

In hardly any other Alpine valley have traditional farms been preserved in such diversity. Often more than 700 years old, these proud farmsteads cling to the slopes like eagle’s nests, offering magnificent views over the valleysome surrounded by blooming farmhouse gardens. All of them bear witness to the centuries-old tradition of the closed farmstead system, which dictates that farms must not be divided through inheritance. They reflect the pride of their owners in their heritage and traditions, passed down through generations. This unique circumstance allows us today to still experience these valuable and lovingly maintained architectural monuments.

The Oberniederhof

…is a more than 700-year-old farmstead located in the center of Madonna di Senales, which has never been destroyed by mudslides, floods, or fire. The entire development of building styles in the Schnalstal Valley over the past centuries can be traced here in a representative way. Despite the many renovations, extensions, and alterations carried out over time, all construction phases remain clearly recognizable. Interestingly, the farm was used not only as a residence but also as a courthouse, a prison, and a tavern.

ARCHEOPARC

At the archaeological open-air museum in Madonna di Senales, everything revolves around Ötzi, the Iceman. Visitors learn how and where Ötzi was discovered in 1991 and how he and his contemporaries lived 5,300 years ago. Special highlights of the exhibitions include true-to-original reconstructions of Stone Age houses (outdoor area) as well as replicas of Ötzi’s clothing, weapons, and tools (indoor area). The tour takes about one hour (Circuit 1). Demonstrations of Stone Age fire-making take place every hour on the hour. Families and anyone interested in traditional crafts should definitely allow time for the hands-on workshop, and also visit the archery range and the dugout canoe pier (Circuits 1–3, approx. 3–4 hours).

CAMPUS TRANSHUMANZA

ALPINE KNOWLEDGE OF LIFE, ART AND CRAFT

The campus transhumanza is a museum and cultural center dedicated to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of transhumance. The exhibitions (indoor/ outdoor) tell the story and present-day practice of the centuries-old local sheep drive from the Vinschgau Valley through Schnalstal into the rear Ötztal and back. At the campus transhumanza, visitors can discover art, traditional crafts, and alpine knowledge of life.

For the fourteenth time, a stage of the European Championships in prehistoric archery and spear-throwing returns to the Schnalstal Valley: where Ötzi once went hunting, professionals and amateurs of these prehistoric disciplines gather—at the invitation of the archeoParc archaeological open-air museum—to compete.

SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS

In addition to the permanent exhibitions “The Ötzi Discovery” and “Flora, Fauna, Humans,” the archeoParc in Madonna di Senales presents a small special exhibition each year. This year’s edition is titled “Mushrooms” and explores the cultural history of fungi from Ötzi’s time to the present day. At the same time, related mixed-media works by British-American artist Jana Nicole invite visitors to explore and reflect.

PATHS OF GRASS AND ROCK - 28ᵗʰ March – 8ᵗʰ November 2026 | daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

In addition to its permanent exhibitions, the campus transhumanza in Madonna di Senales presents small special exhibitions. This year’s edition is titled “Paths of Grass and Rock” and is dedicated to eight examples of European transhumance.

35 years - Ötzi Discovery

In 1991, the Simon couple discovered a well-preserved glacier mummy over 5,300 years old at Tisenjoch. The discovery of the glacier mummy Ötzi in the Schnalstal Valley attracted worldwide attention. However, Ötzi is significant not only because of his age, but above all due to his exceptional state of preservation. His complete clothing and equipment have been preserved. The mummy and its associated finds can be seen at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, while in the Schnalstal Valley the archaeological open-air museum archeoParc shows how Ötzi lived.

Hiking in the Schnalstal Valley

Hiking in the fascinating mountain world of the Texel Group Nature Park – this is pure variety. Between the vineyards at the valley entrance and the magnificent glacier world of the Ötztal Alps stretches a wide network of over 240 km of marked hiking trails. Breathtaking panoramic views of numerous three-thousand-meter peaks, an idyllic high-alpine landscape with extensive larch forests, emerald-green mountain lakes, and a great diversity of alpine flowers, encounters with chamois and marmots, the discovery of centuries-old traditions and mountain farming life, and relaxing moments enjoying a hearty snack at one of the many alpine pastures and mountain huts – all of this is part of the hiking experience in the Schnalstal Valley. It is no coincidence that the more than 5,000-year-old “Iceman” once called this place home.

For those who do not wish to explore the beautiful mountain world of the Schnalstal Valley on their own, a wide range of guided hikes and tours is offered. The program ranges from easy to challenging hikes, suitable for both walkers and mountaineers alike. Experience the flora and fauna of the Schnalstal Valley on one of these guided hikes. Our certified hiking guide Richard Rainer, as well as our mountain guide Robert Ciatti, will accompany you over hill and dale, through forests and meadows, to crystal-clear mountain lakes, past rushing waters, and all the way up to the glacier. In the following, we would like to briefly introduce them to you:

RICHARD RAINER has been a certified and qualified hiking and cultural guide for many years. A true Schnalstal local, he accompanies guests on hikes in summer and guides them through the “village of silence.”

ROBERT CIATTI has been dedicating himself to his passion as a mountain guide for more than 30 years. Although he lives in the Passeier Valley, he loves exploring the mountains of Schnalstal both in summer and winter.

TO THE OLDEST HIGH ALPINE PASTURE IN SOUTH TYROL–MOAR ALM (2.095 M)

Starting from the parking area at the Schroflhof above Monte Santa Caterina, the ascent to the Moaralm—one of the oldest alpine pastures in Tyrol and the oldest in South Tyrol—means stepping back into the 12th century of Alpine settlement history. During the hike, learn interesting facts about the history of the valley and enjoy the unique panoramic views.

CULTURAL-HISTORICAL FARM HIKE – FINAIL, RAFFEIN, TISEN

The cultural-historical farm hike, rich in history, starts in Maso Corto and leads you down the valley to the former highest grain farms in the Alpine region at 1,973 m above sea level in Vernago. There, you can take a relaxing break at the Finailhof while enjoying a breathtaking view over the entire reservoir. The descent continues via Raffein and Tisenhof to Vernago. We recommend taking the bus to Maso Corto and then returning to your accommodation afterwards. If you arrive by car, you will need to take the bus back to the starting point (Maso Corto).

MOUNTAIN YOGA IN THE MORNING

An invitation to fully experience the moment, ground yourself, and step into your day with clarity and ease.

Start your day outdoors in nature and take a moment just for yourself. In this yoga session, gentle, flowing movements are combined with the breath to bring body and mind into balance.

We begin with natural, soft movements to awaken the body, mobilize it, and gently stretch. From there, we move into a smooth flow that helps you build momentum and arrive more fully in yourself with each breath.

Surrounded by fresh air and natural stillness, you’ll find space to be present, clear your mind, and recharge your energy. The session closes with a relaxing Shavasana.

YIN - YOGA

Gently wind down your day and immerse yourself in a nourishing Yin Yoga practice that brings body and mind into balance. In this calm and meditative class, we will hold passive stretches for several minutes, allowing deep release in the fascia and inviting fresh energy to flow.

The afternoon is the perfect time to consciously slow down, let go of stress, and reconnect with yourself. Supported by a soothing atmosphere and mindful guidance, this session creates space for inner calm, ease, and regeneration.

ARCHITECTURE, ART & HISTORY ON THE SCHNALSTAL GLACIER

An extraordinary hike that not only offers breathtaking views, but also combines fascinating historical, architectural, and artistic experiences. After taking the cable car to Grawand at 3,212 m above sea level, we reach the Iceman Ötzi Peak and a unique work of art by Olafur Eliasson. During the descent along the glacier, with views of turquoise glacial lakes, you will learn a great deal about the history of the cable car to Grawand, which was opened 51 years ago. The hike finally ends at the Teufelsegg Hut, from where we comfortably return to the valley by the Roter Kofel chairlift.

Take part in this icy experience and feel the glacier with all your senses. From Maso Corto, you take the cable car up to the glacier. The route then leads you to the glacier tongue. From here, equipped with harnesses, crampons, and secured by rope, you cross the Hochjochferner, where the unique features of this fascinating glacier world are explained to you. The more adventurous can even abseil into a glacier crevasse. The descent leads via the Bella Vista mountain hut back to Maso Corto.

HIKING IN ÖTZI’S FOOTSTEPS

ARCHAEOLOGICAL HIKING TRAILS

Due to the sensational discovery of the Iceman, archaeological excavations were carried out in the Schnalstal Valley, the Vinschgau, the Passeier Valley, and the Ötztal (A), during which important archaeological finds were made. These often prehistoric discoveries led to the creation of 17 so-called archaeological hiking trails. They are marked with the letter “A” (for “Archaeology”), a sequential number, and the stylized axe of the Iceman. Particularly important sites are marked on location with an information stele made of copper. Follow in Ötzi’s footsteps along ancient paths and crossings—you will discover and experience many unique features of these valley and glacier regions that have been used for thousands of years.

DISCOVERY SITE OF THE ICEMAN

The discovery site of the Iceman is located at Tisenjoch (3,210 m). This pass from the Schnalstal Valley into the Ötztal (A) was already used thousands of years ago by hunters and shepherds. To this day, sheep cross this route on their way to summer pastures near the main Alpine ridge. The archeoParc, together with local mountain guides and the Schnalstal glacier cable car, organizes tours to the Ötzi discovery site from Maso Corto throughout the year—on foot with glacier crossing in summer and on ski tours in winter.

TEXEL GROUP NATURE PARK

The Texelgroup Nature Park, covering 33,430 hectares, is the largest—and for many hikers also the most beautiful—of South Tyrol’s nature parks. The park encompasses the entire Texelgroup, an extensive high-alpine landscape between the Schnalstal Valley and the Passeier Valley. Hardly any landscape could be more diverse. A wide variety of habitats—from Mediterranean environments to glacial landscapes—find their home within the park. “From vine to snowfield” or “From emerald lizard to ibex” would be just as fitting subtitles as the chosen and well-known “From water and from light.” Nearly one third of the Schnalstal Valley is part of the Texel Group Nature Park. Alongside the Spronser Lakes, the Pfossental Valley is the second outstanding scenic highlight. A true gem for hikers and nature lovers. Especially from the Eishof onwards, the mountain scenery surrounding the high valley is of breathtaking beauty. In fact, there are more chamois and ibex here than inhabitants in the entire Schnalstal Valley.

ALPINE EXPERIENCE TRAIL IN THE PFOSSENTAL VALLEY

Along the entire, easily accessible experience trail from Vorderkaser to Eishof, visitors learn many interesting and informative facts about this unique natural and cultural landscape. Various topics are presented through information panels and interactive elements. In addition to the special features of flora, fauna, and geology, visitors also gain insight into alpine farming in this valley. Starting at Vorderkaser, the history of the Pfossental Valley is first introduced. An insight into cheese-making is offered not only by the first panel of the Alpine Experience Trail, but above all by the demonstration dairy at Vorderkaser. At the Mitterkaser alpine pasture, a simplified model of a butter churn invites visitors to turn it, with printed texts and

images illustrating the butter-making process. A restored waal (irrigation channel), along with an information panel, provides insight into this traditional irrigation system. At the Rableid alpine pasture, visitors can learn about the reintroduction of ibex. A telescope installed there allows you to spot these agile climbers on the surrounding rock faces. At the Eishof, the unique geological features are particularly fascinating. Stories and legends of the Schnalstal and Pfossental valleys bring the Alpine Experience Trail to a fitting conclusion.

MERANO HIGH MOUNTAIN TRAIL

One of the most beautiful hiking trails in the entire Alpine region runs around the Texelgroup Nature Park: the Merano High Mountain Trail. The route, which is up to nearly 100 km long, takes between 4 and 6 days to complete. There are numerous access and exit points along the trail, allowing hikers to start or end their journey at various locations. In addition, individual farms on or near the trail can be reached via access roads by car, taxi, or cable car. The trail itself is marked with number 24. At the tourist offices, you can obtain a panoramic map with route descriptions, elevation profiles, and a directory of mountain huts and refreshment stops. However, the purchase of a detailed hiking map (Kompass, Tabacco) specifically for the Merano High Mountain Trail – Texelgroup Nature Park is recommended.

VIA MONACHORUM Paths to the Village of Silence

In Monte Santa Caterina, the trail (no. 26) begins directly to the left of the prominent church hill. It first descends in a few small switchbacks and then continues on an increasingly wider path. At one bend, a marker leads to the third section of the Via Monachorum towards the “Hof am Wasser,” which had been left to decay for many years and is now being restored. In the valley, you reach the Neuratheis inn, which was built during the construction of the road into the Schnalstal Valley and once served as a horse station on the way to Maso Corto. On the opposite side of the road, below the rock face, the path to Certosa begins. Initially, it gently ascends across a meadow, then crosses a small stream and continues along the old mule track to a fork. To the right, the trail continues across two debris gullies (risk of rockfall during heavy rain!) and then climbs steadily into the valley towards Certosa, which welcomes you from afar with its surrounding wall. After visiting the monastery—where you can obtain the most important information at the square with the bus stop—you leave the village along the gently ascending road heading north. After the last houses of the village, a forest path branches off to the right after a left-hand bend, leading to Madonna di Senales (no. 21). The trail then continues through the forest, with gentle ups and downs after a clearing, towards the three Raindl farms. Passing between Mitterraindl and Unterraindl, the route leads to a pasture and a junction. From there, turn right towards Oberraindlhof, following the forest edge until reaching the Pithairer road. Follow this road to the first bend, where you continue straight ahead on the forest track. At the end of the forest track, the path descends slightly to the edge of a meadow and then climbs gently back into the forest, where you soon meet the Marian pilgrimage trail. Follow this trail to the Hotel-Restaurant “Tonzhaus” near the pilgrimage church of Madonna di Senales.

MASTAUN ALM 1.810 m ü. M.

In Madonna di Senales, above the pilgrimage church, is the Hotel-Restaurant “Tonzhaus.” To its right, a path leads through an archway to the nearby forest edge and a fork in the trail. To the right and uphill, trail no. 17 leads into the forest and along a beautiful path in about 30 minutes to the impressive Mastaunhof, with its shingle roofs at the entrance to the Mastauntal Valley. Passing the farm on the right side of the stream, a moderately ascending path (17A) begins, leading to the alpine pasture. Here too, the flat, cleared valley floor is lined with mighty larch trees, which are just as enchanting in spring with their fresh green as they are in autumn with their colorful foliage.

LAKE CIRCUIT VERNAGO RESERVOIR 1.700 m ü. M.

You cross the dam. At the end, keep right, then take the stairs on the left up to a narrow path marked “Seerundweg” (lake circuit). The trail now runs mostly slightly above the lake until its end—a beautiful but shaded path. At the end of the lake, the trail begins to climb to the left towards Maso Corto; however, continue to follow the “Seerundgang” signs to the right. You reach the gorge of the Schnals stream, which flows into the lake. A suspension bridge takes you to the sunny side of the lake. The path then continues through open woodland, and after crossing a second suspension bridge over the Finail stream, you return across meadows to the starting point.

MASO CORTO - VERNAGO 2.011 m ü. M. - 1.700 m ü. M.

From the parking area in Maso Corto, follow the road for a few minutes until you reach a gate on the left. Here, trail no. 7 begins, leading across meadows towards Vernago through open larch forest. In some sections, the path is quite exposed and should be walked with care. From the trail, you have views of the Koflhöfe farms and the Marchegghof, where much of the film "Das finstere Tal" (The Dark Valley) was shot. The route continues to the Finailhof farmstead (1,973 m). With little change in elevation, you then proceed to the Raffeinhof (1,822 m), where you should again watch out for a few exposed sections. You then descend further to the Tisenhof farmstead (1,814 m), which is majestically situated at the entrance to the valley of the same name. Here too, you can stop for refreshments, while enjoying a beautiful view of Lake Vernago, beneath whose waters eight farms once stood. From there, you follow the access road down to Vernago (1,711 m).

LAZAUN 2.443 m ü. M.

The hike starts in Maso Corto (2,011 m), where you follow the signposts (12/ A1) behind the hotel buildings into the Langgrubental Valley. After crossing the stream, the trail continues further into the valley. At this point, a path (no. 1/ A10) branches off towards the Bildstöckljoch (3,117 m). This is a rewarding but demanding detour (approx. 1,246 meters of elevation gain, total walking time approx. 5.5 hours), as the pass was once an important crossing. To reach the Lazaun Hut (2,427 m), which is open in both winter and summer, follow trail no. 11A and ascend across slopes to the high plateau. The descent follows trail no. 11 across alpine meadows and through a typical Swiss stone pine forest down into the valley. Alternatively, you can choose the more comfortable option and take the cable car, whose mountain station is located right next to the Lazaun Hut.

In the 1950s, eight ancient farmsteads of the village of Vernago were submerged by the waters of the newly created Vernago reservoir. When the water level is low, the tower of the chapel can still be seen rising out of the water today.

LAFETZ ALM 2.015 m ü. M.

Surrounded by a beautiful larch and Swiss stone pine forest, the Lafetzalm— newly built in 2019—is located at 2,015 m in Madonna di Senales. After the ascent through this idyllic natural landscape, you are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Similaun, the Ötztal Alps, and the Ötzi discovery site. The easiest and least strenuous route follows the forest road from the parking area above the archeoParc in Madonna di Senales to the Mastaunhof, and from there to the Lafetzalm. The Lafetzalm can also be reached via trail no. 19 from the pilgrimage church or the Hotel Tonzhaus in Madonna di Senales. This route is more direct and steep, but also the fastest option (507 m ascent, 1.5 hours). A second option is a circular hike with views from the lowest summit cross in the Schnalstal Valley: Madonna di Senales – Mastaunalm – Mastaunpichele – Lafetzalm. This variant is of moderate difficulty (773 m ascent, 278 m descent, approx. 2.5–3 hours).

From the public parking area in Certosa—where there is also a bus stop— the route leads left past the village community house and into the forest. Following the well-marked trail (no. 23), you ascend steeply in several switchbacks to the Klosteralm. After about two hours of somewhat strenuous climbing, the forest opens up and the first green alpine meadows come into view. At the alpine pasture, where overnight stays are also possible, you are rewarded with a magnificent view of the opposite Pfossental Valley and the many three-thousand-meter peaks of the Texelgroup. Another hour of walking is well worth the effort, as the unspoiled beauty of the idyllic Saxalbsee (lake) at 2,460 m unfolds before you.

Steep but rewarding hike

There are two ascent routes to the lake, but it is recommended to take route A for the ascent and route B for the descent. This also creates a rewarding circular hike. Sure-footedness is required.

Ascent A: From the Klosteralm, follow trail no. 23 for about 30 minutes in a wide left curve across a boulder slope to a wooden pole. Beyond this point— briefly exposed above a large rock crevice—the path traverses several slopes into a small valley. Below the trail lies an impressive boulder field. After a short ascent to a saddle, the Saxalbsee lies beyond in broad hollows.

Ascent B: From the Klosteralm, follow trail no. 23 uphill for two minutes until a sign marked “See/Kreuz” (lake/summit cross) points to the right. Well marked, the path leads into a small valley below the rise of the Trumser Spitze. It then turns left up to a mountain saddle to the right of the small but striking Sardutspitze (2,598 m). From there, trail no. 29A descends steeply down to the lake.

Sure-footedness required before reaching the lake

PENAUD ALM 2.323 m ü. M.

Follow the forest road (20/A7) leading into the Penaud Valley. After passing the ruins of the abandoned Penaudhof, you reach a bridge and shortly afterwards a wayside cross at the edge of a small plain. The path then ascends again to a place with the unusual name “Karl Sumperer,” dominated by a three-armed weather cross. This was likely an excellent observation point for early hunters and shepherds, as from here almost the entire valley can be seen, with magnificent panoramic views of the peaks of the Similaun group in the background. You then quickly reach the highest alpine dairy farm in South Tyrol (2,323 m). On the way back, a worthwhile alternative from the former Penaudhof is to take trail (20A/21) via the Pitair farm back into the valley.

LAGAUNTAL, TASCHENJÖCHL & BERGL ALM

2.414 m ü. M.

From the parking area in Maso Corto (2,011 m), first walk across to the valley station of the Lazaun cable car and continue to the Wieshof mountain farm with its small chapel. Here begins trail no. 4 / A4, which leads uphill through beautiful larch and Swiss stone pine forest. After about 1.5 hours, you reach the Lagaun Valley, an unspoiled high-alpine valley with a small mountain pond, raised bogs, and rare flora. The path leads to the Lagaun stream, which you cross via a wooden bridge. At the fork just beyond, keep right and continue on trail no. 4. Crossing a moraine slope, the trail ascends to a small plateau and then continues in partly steep switchbacks on a well-maintained path up to the summit cross at the Tascheljöchl. The descent follows trail no. 5 from the junction, always heading towards the reservoir. In switchbacks, you descend to the Bergl Alm (2,214 m), which is open and offers refreshments. After a rest and refreshments at the hut, continue first on trail no. 13 and later on trail no. 5 across the Gerstgraser meadows towards the Lagaun Valley. After crossing the bridge over the Lagaun stream, ascend briefly and then return to the starting point in Maso Corto via trail no. 4.

HIGH-ALPINE TOURS

ÖTZI-DISCOVERY SITE 3.210 m ü. M.

At the Vernago reservoir, at the level of the dam, follow the signs for the Similaun Hut northwestwards to the Tisenhof farmstead (1,814 m). From the Tisenhof, the marked trail (A2) leads along the Leiterbach stream across alpine meadows, then through sparse larch forest, and later over scree terrain, always heading north into the Tisental Valley. Soon, at the head of the valley, you will see the striking Finailspitze with its large summit cross glittering in the sun. Shortly after a wayside shrine dedicated to Saint Martin, the

highly revered patron saint of livestock, you reach a hill with a stele. A few steep scree switchbacks follow, leading to a distinctive rock band, and after several more turns you reach the Niederjoch, behind which lies the Similaun Hut (3,019 m). The ascent to the hut alone (over 1,000 m of elevation gain) already justifies a break.

Directly behind the Similaun Hut, the marked trail (A2), partly secured with fixed ropes, continues along an extended ridge. Soon after, along the widening ridge with some ups and downs, you reach the Ötzi discovery site at Tisenjoch (3,210 m).

This tour requires endurance, good sure-footedness, and a head for heights

GRAWAND - FINAILHOF 3.251 m ü. M. - 1.973 m ü. M.

From Maso Corto (2,011 m), you can reach the mountain station (3,212 m) in just a few minutes by taking the Schnalstal glacier cable car. From the mountain station, follow trail (A1/8) for a short ascent to the Grawandspitze (3,251 m) with its prominent summit cross. Beyond the ridge, the small Finailsee is already visible below. The trail then descends along the ridge to the Finailjoch (3,084 m), directly above the lift facilities. In places, it is quite steep, somewhat exposed, and often still covered with icy firn in early summer! The impressive Finailsee (2,709 m), nestled among rocks, is remarkably large for a mountain lake. The descent continues to the Finailhof (1,952 m), which is open year-round.

The Finailhof

…was the highest-altitude grain farm in Europe until 1967. In 1416, the farmers are said to have granted refuge to Duke Frederick IV, known as “with the Empty Pockets,” while he was fleeing. The farmer is said to have employed him as a farmhand to tend the sheep for his protection. A cup and cutlery are kept at the farm, which are said to have been a gift from the duke.

From Maso Corto, follow trail no. 3 towards the Schöne Aussicht/Bella Vista mountain hut. Through forest and high-alpine pastures, you ascend over 800 meters in elevation to the junction with trail no. 5A, which you follow to the left up to the Teufelsjoch (3,219 m) with its stone plateau. From there, the trail winds along the ridge, passing the Eggspitze (3,163 m) with its stone plaque, to the summit “Im Hinteren Eis” (3,269 m), marked by a cairn and summit register. A magnificent panorama with views of the Weißkugel and the longest glacier tongue in the Ötztal Alps, the Hintereisferner, rewards the ascent. The descent to the Schöne Aussicht/Bella Vista mountain hut—living up to its name—follows trail no. 3A, marked with cairns. From the hut, continue on trail no. 3 back to the starting point in Maso Corto. The Roter Kofel chairlift and the glacier cable car can make the circular hike easier and shorter.

TIPS FOR SAFE HIKING & MOUNTAINEERING

In the Schnalstal holiday region, over 240 km of marked hiking trails with magnificent panoramic views invite you to explore— from alpine meadows to high-alpine tours.

Plan your hikes carefully: Information about distance and difficulty is essential for a safe mountain experience. As a general rule, allow about 20 minutes of walking time per kilometer of distance or per 100 meters of ascent. Inform your family, your host, or the hut keeper about your destination.

Before every tour, check the current weather forecast and keep an eye on weather developments throughout your hike. Hut keepers can also provide useful information about local weather conditions.

Assess your physical condition realistically and choose a suitable tour. Start early in the morning and plan extra time so you can return before nightfall.

Maintain a steady and moderate pace. Take enough breaks, especially when hiking with children. Make sure to drink enough fluids!

Pay attention to proper equipment, especially sturdy footwear: good hiking boots provide secure footing and protect your joints.

Choose light, breathable clothing and bring spare clothing. Never forget to pack warm and waterproof gear. A first aid kit should also always be included.

Respect nature: avoid making noise, do not leave any litter behind, and protect the vegetation. Observe protected plants and animals

Always follow the trail markings and stay on designated paths and tracks. Check your map regularly and turn back in good time if in doubt.

Take trail closures seriously and do not put yourself in danger. For safety, seek information in advance from the tourist office or your host.

Walter Nischler from the Nischlhof in Schnalstal began planting his first apple trees in 2007. The conditions at this location were challenging, making it necessary to take new approaches to the deeply rooted tradition of apple cultivation in South Tyrol. His goal was to prove that individuality and creativity in apple growing and processing are possible. 19991 GRAPPA RISERVA SUPERBA

The 19991 Grappa Riserva Superba is produced by the Walcher Estate Distillery and made from a selection of red grape pomace. The fine spirit is then aged for 24 months in oak barrels before being bottled. Anyone wondering about the number sequence in the name should read on, as it is by no means arbitrary. In fact, 19991 refers to the discovery date of Ötzi, who was found on September 19, 1991, by the Simon couple between the Schnalstal and Ötztal valleys. To this day, the world’s most famous mummy continues to be studied by a team of scientists, as does the discovery site itself. To support this research, one euro from every bottle of 19991 Grappa Riserva Superba sold is donated to Ötzi scholarship holders conducting archaeological and scientific research related to the discovery site. ARCHERY

At the Moarhof in Monte Santa Caterina, maximum concentration and accuracy are required: on the more than 4 km long 3D hunting course by Valentin Müller, bow and arrow are always at hand. Twenty targets embedded in the vegetation—some of them moving—are designed to look strikingly realistic and challenge even experienced archers.

Fun and games for all ages are offered by the group activity Archery Tag. It is a mix of paintball and dodgeball. Instead of a ball, players try to defeat the opposing team using bow and arrow.

Archery Cinema! In the new archery cinema, it’s now “lights off, film on, and let the arrows fly!” Targets are projected onto a 3 × 2 m screen at a distance of 8–12 m. In each short film, a target appears six times on one of the animals—within seconds, the arrow must hit the mark. Two people can shoot at the same time and demonstrate their skills (children from 7 years; ideal for families and groups). The archery cinema is open year-round on request.

Climbing is becoming increasingly popular among both children and adults. Whether you are gaining your first experience on a rock face or looking for more challenging routes, the Schnalstal Valley and its surrounding area offer three via ferratas as well as three climbing crags.

Near the Marchegghof in the Maso Corto area, about 2 km from the glacier cable car, the AVS Schnals local section has created a climbing garden. It is family-friendly and offers routes of various difficulty levels. Introductory climbing sessions for children and adults take place on selected dates in July and August (see p. 61).

The Mastaun climbing garden is located in the high valley of the same name near Madonna di Senales in Schnalstal Valley at an altitude of 1,950 m (approx. 20 minutes on foot from the mountain pasture Mastaun). The approximately 70 m high rock face offers technically demanding multi-pitch routes in an unspoiled natural setting.

VIA FERRATA LARIX IN THE ALPIN ARENA SENALES

Calling all climbing enthusiasts: at the end of June, the “Larix” via ferrata (Latin for larch) and the parallel “Alpin Trail” adventure hiking path in Maso Corto reopen. The two routes intersect at several points, allowing, for example, families to start together - some taking the action-packed via ferrata, others the adventure trail. The via ferrata crosses several bridges, a zipline, and includes some challenging climbing sections. The first highlight is the reservoir, followed by a rocky ascent leading to a Bronze Age campsite and further up to above the Teufelsegg Hut. VIA FERRATA „HOACHWOOL“

The starting point of one of the most attractive via ferratas in South Tyrol is located below Juval Castle, at the entrance to the Schnalstal Valley. The route follows the historic irrigation channel system between Schnalstal and Naturno. This former water channel, once about 10 km long, was also known as the Hoachwool. The route, with a cable length of 1,400 meters and an elevation gain of 630 meters, can be challenging even for experienced climbers. Equipped with a harness, via ferrata set, helmet, sturdy mountain boots, and gloves, you can set off—provided you have a head for heights. On this via ferrata, there are often significant drops beneath your feet.

Note! In summer, the Hoachwool via ferrata can become very hot due to strong sun exposure. It is therefore essential to start the climb very early. According to mountain rescue recommendations, only those who can perform at least 5 pull-ups without excessive effort should attempt the via ferrata. Good equipment and plenty to drink are equally important.

The practice and family via ferrata KNOTT is located on the rock where the viewing platform is anchored. From the platform, you have a spectacular view down onto the individual routes and climbers. At KNOTT, there are four via ferrata routes, a short connecting route, a 20 m long suspension bridge, and two steep ladders. The practice and family via ferrata offers easy routes, challenging sections, exposed passages, and technical parts, and can be used at any time of day, as both the access and descent are short. Ride your bike to the Kloster Alm and from there hike about one hour to the beautiful Saxalbsee (lake).

Ride your bike to the mountain pasture Lafetz and from there hike just under one hour to the lowest summit cross in the Schnalstal Valley – the Mastaun Pichele. From the mountain pasture Lafetz , it’s about 280 m of ascent.

Ride your bike into the picturesque Pfossental Valley to the Eishof and from there hike about three hours to the Refuge Petrarca.

Located at Juval Castle in the Vinschgau Valley, this museum is dedicated to the myth of the mountain and houses several art collections: the Tibetica collection, a gallery of paintings of the world’s sacred mountains, a mask collection from five continents, a unique exhibition on Gesar Ling, the Tantra room, and the expedition cellar. The entire exhibition is explained by trained guides. In addition, there is a small mountain animal park, farm products at the castle inn, excellent wines at Unterortl, and a farm shop at the foot of the castle hill. Visitors leave Juval Castle with lasting impressions.

Speck is a South Tyrolean original. Anyone who wants to experience the world of this unique delicacy can do so at Speckworld in Naturno. Moser Speck has created a world dedicated to this high-quality South Tyrolean product, featuring both a museum and a shop. Even from the outside, the “Speck hut” is an eye-catcher. Inside, reclaimed wood and the characteristic aromas of speck—juniper, rosemary, and bay leaf—create a traditional atmosphere. In the rear section of Speckworld, a typical old smoking hut has been recreated, complete with an old stove, original trough, chain, sausage stuffer, product scale, and traditional tools. Here, visitors can see how speck was produced in the past. Information panels and interactive stations also provide insights into the tradition, modern production methods, and useful tips and tricks, such as proper slicing techniques and optimal storage. 5 TOWER IN LAKE RESIA

The Romanesque church tower (1355) still stands today as a reminder of the villages of Alt-Graun and Resia, which had to make way for a massive reservoir project in 1949/50. The loop around the lake is a wonderful and popular route for hiking, biking, and running, while the lake itself is a great spot for fishing, boating, sailing, and kitesurfing.

The centerpiece of the Messner Mountain Museums, MMM Firmian at Sigmundskron Castle near Bolzano, focuses on the relationship between humans and mountains. Paths, stairways, and towers guide visitors from the depths of the mountains, where their formation and exploitation are explored, through the religious significance of peaks as points of orientation and bridges to the beyond, to the history of mountaineering and modern alpine tourism.

TRANSHUMANCE

June & September 2026

The people of Schnalstal Valley are deeply rooted not only in their homeland but also in their traditions. One of these is the spectacular sheep drive. As has been the case for centuries, up to 4,000 sheep are driven each year from the Vinschgau and Schnalstal valleys across the snow-covered Hochjoch (2,857 m) and Niederjoch (3,019 m) to the alpine pastures in the Vent Valley, which still belong to Schnalstal farmers. For about one fifth of the sheep, the “long march” begins already the day before in Lasa in the Vinschgau Valley, covering over 44 km, with 3,200 meters of ascent and 1,800 meters of descent. Following the route of the early explorers of the Schnalstal Valley, the sheep move on with their shepherds and dogs. At the gathering points in Maso Corto and Vernago, the animals stay overnight once more before setting off at daybreak the next morning (from 4.00 a.m. in Vernago and from 6.00 a.m. in Maso Corto) to cross the Ötztal Alps. Snowfields at the Hochjoch and Niederjoch must be crossed again with great effort. In autumn, the procession of 4,000 sheep returns in the opposite direction, usually under better trail and weather conditions. Shepherds, drovers, and crowds of locals and visitors are then welcomed back in the valley with a small shepherd’s festival.

HIKING UP WITH THE SHEEP

TRADITIONAL SHEEP DRIVE IN THE SCHNALSTAL VALLEY

For many centuries, around 1,500 sheep from the Schnalstal Valley and the Vinschgau have crossed the Niederjoch every year at the beginning of June to reach the alpine pastures in the Ötztal Valley. Together with the shepherds and drovers, we accompany the sheep from Maso Corto up to the Hochjoch. During this hike, you can experience this ancient tradition up close and learn a great deal about it. Upon arrival at the Schöne Aussicht mountain hut, the group enjoys a traditional barley soup to regain strength. The return journey then follows the same route.

AN INSIGHT INTO AN OLD TRADITION

The Schnals “Goaßlschneller” and a young accordion player from the association will give you a small insight into an old South Tyrolean tradition on these evenings: the art of whip cracking (Goaslschnelln). In the past, the whip was used, among other things, for herding cattle or to loudly awaken spring at the end of winter. Today, the performances mainly serve to preserve this cultural tradition.

RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS, PROCESSIONS & TRADITIONAL FOLK FESTIVALS

At the front walk the altar servers in their white robes with red collars, followed by the “canopy,” a gold-embroidered rectangular baldachin carried by men. Behind them comes the priest, carrying the monstrance with the Blessed Sacrament. The musicians of the local brass bands, as well as the young men and women, walk elegantly and with dignity behind their banners. Other men, girls, and women carry various statues, in pairs or groups of four, on table-like platforms. The traditional costumes are festive, as are the simple dirndls, which are traditionally worn on public holidays.

Celebrate these small traditional festivals together with the people of Schnalstal Valley. A great atmosphere with musical entertainment is guaranteed.

Under the motto “Hiking for Peter Pan,” an alpine hike to the Lazaun Hut with Norbert Rier from the Kastelruther Spatzen once again takes place.

Look forward to a leisurely tour through the surrounding mountain landscape, accompanied by music from “Tiroler Alpenklang.” Whether individual hikers, families, or groups – everyone is warmly invited to enjoy nature together with Norbert Rier and the Sommerfest team, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and recharge their energy. Participation in the hike is free of charge. However, those who make a donation to the South Tyrolean children’s cancer aid organization “Peter Pan” will receive a hiking certificate signed by Norbert Rier.

With his renewed participation, the likeable frontman of the Kastelruther Spatzen once again demonstrates his social commitment. All the more, everyone would be delighted to see a great turnout.

Nineteen. Nine. Nine. One. No, we’re not talking about the average elevation gain Dani Jung clocks up each week. Instead, it refers to the date of Ötzi’s discovery. Ötzi? You know: the man from Tisenjoch, the Iceman, the mummy from Similaun—the most famous glacier mummy since the Copper Age. Even more importantly, September 19, 1991 has also become the namesake of one of the most demanding trail running events on the racing calendar: the Schnalstal Alpine Trail! Expect challenging trails at breathtaking altitudes, passing the Ötzi discovery site, steep climbs, technical downhills, incredible panoramas, and routes that demand everything from participants—yet are all the more rewarding because of it.

SENALES SHEEP - SPECIALITY WEEKS DURING THE TRANSHUMANCE PERIOD

The sheep: countless stories surround these gentle herd animals in the Schnalstal Valley. For centuries, they have provided farmers with many useful resources for the demanding life in the mountains. Schnals sheep are perfectly adapted to life in alpine environments and are raised on high-altitude pastures rich in herbs and minerals, where they are fed with the finest natural forage.

For thousands of years, Schnals shepherds have driven their sheep in early summer across mountain passes and glaciers to Vent in the Ötztal Valley, and back again at the beginning of September. This historic event is known as transhumance. As part of this tradition, local restaurants in Schnalstal Valley prepare special culinary highlights featuring Schnals lamb. Creative chefs reinterpret and create imaginative dishes centered around this regional specialty. At least one lamb starter or main course can be found on the menus of these establishments, which welcome guests with genuine Schnalstal hospitality.

The opening event, the “Genussmeile” (culinary promenade), will take place on September 5ᵗʰ, 2026

The specialty weeks are an initiative of the HGV Schnals (Hotel and Restaurant Association), in cooperation with the Schnalstal Tourism Association and the Schnals Sheep Breeders’ Association.

WORLD-CLASS ART ON THE GLACIER

OLAFUR ELIASSON, one of the world’s most successful contemporary artists, unveiled a permanent public artwork he created on the Grawand ridge in October 2020. Titled “Our Glacier Perspectives,” it can be easily reached in about 15 minutes from the mountain station of the Schnalstal glacier cable car.

The access path leading to the artwork is 410 meters long and is divided into nine gates, arranged as intervals corresponding to the duration of the ice ages. At the end of the path stands a pavilion created by the Danish-Icelandic artist and UN Special Ambassador for Sustainability, made of steel and glass rings with a circular deck inside. Visitors standing on it can use the pavilion as an astronomical instrument by aligning their view with the surrounding rings, which trace the apparent path of the sun across the sky on a given day.

The project was initiated by the Talking Waters Society and financially supported by the Autonomous Province of South Tyrol, the municipality of Schnals, Schnalstal Glacier Cable Cars Ltd., and additional sponsors.

IN SILENCE LIES STRENGHT - HIKE FROM THE CHURCH IN MADONNA DI SENALES TO THE MONASTERY IN CERTOSA

Powerful and majestic, the pilgrimage church of Madonna di Senales stands enthroned on its rock. It forms the starting point for the approx. 2.5-hour hike. The route follows the Via Monachorum, passing the ancient Schnals larch, a waterfall, and fresh mountain springs, leading to the former Carthusian monastery of Allerengelberg in Certosa. And there? Silence. Experience how soothing silence can be. After consciously taking in the silence, you will be guided through the “village of silence” and the former monastery complex of the Carthusian monks.

GUIDED TOUR OF THE FORMER CARTHUSIAN MONASTERY ALLERENGELBERG

From 1326 to 1782, the Carthusian monastery Allerengelberg was located in Certosa. It was dissolved under Emperor Joseph II, but the spirit of the monks still lives on in the cloister. During the tour, participants will discover the art-historical and architectural highlights of the monastery and learn about the life and work of the Carthusian monks.

50 YEARS TEXEL GROUP NATURE PARK: TO THE OLDEST HIGH ALPINE PASTURE IN TYROL – MOAR ALM (2,095 M A.S.L.)

Enjoy the magnificent and unique view from the oldest high alpine pasture in the Tyrolean region over the Lower Vinschgau and the entrance to the Schnalstal Valley. The hike starts above Monte S. Caterina at the parking area at Schroflhof (1,708 m a.s.l.). From here, follow trail no. 9 towards Moar Alm. After a pleasant two-hour ascent, you will have covered around 400 meters of elevation gain and reach Moar Alm. After a well-deserved break, the route continues via Dicker Alm and Hühnerspielhof back towards the parking area. During the hike, you will learn interesting facts about the history of the valley.

The cultural-historical farm hike, rich in history, starts in Maso Corto and leads you down the valley to the former highest grain farms in the Alpine region at 1,973 m above sea level in Vernago. There, you can take a relaxing break at the Finailhof while enjoying a breathtaking view over the entire reservoir. The descent continues via Raffein and Tisenhof to Vernago. We recommend taking the bus to Maso Corto and then returning to your accommodation afterwards. If you arrive by car, you will need to take the bus back to the starting point (Maso Corto).

50 YEARS TEXEL GROUP NATURE PARK – ALONG THE MERANO HIGH MOUNTAIN TRAIL FROM MONTE S. CATERINA TO UNTERSTELL

Together with our hiking guide Richard, you will hike from the picturesque village of Monte S. Caterina along a section of the Merano High Mountain Trail to the Monte di Sole in Naturno. Along the way, Richard provides fascinating insights into the history and development of one of South Tyrol’s most beautiful circular hiking routes, offering stunning views from the Vinschgau Valley to the Merano region. After a pleasant 2-hour hike, you will reach the Unterstell cable car, which takes you down to Naturno. From there, you can use the South Tyrol Guest Pass Vinschgau to return to the starting point by public transport.

ARCHITECTURE, ART & HISTORY AT THE SCHNALSTAL GLACIER

Join us on an extraordinary hike that not only offers breathtaking views but also combines fascinating historical, architectural, and artistic experiences. Our tour begins with a cable car ride to Grawand at 3,212 meters. From there, we reach the Iceman Ötzi Peak viewing platform and a unique work of art by Olafur Eliasson. During the descent along the glacier, with views of turquoise glacial lakes, you will learn a great deal about the history of the Grawand cable car, which was opened 51 years ago. The hike ends at the Teufelsegg Hut, from where we comfortably return to the valley by the Roter Kofel chairlift.

FASCINATION GLACIER WORLD

Take part in this icy experience and explore the glacier with all your senses. From Maso Corto, you take the cable car up to the glacier. The route then continues to the glacier tongue. From here, equipped with harnesses, crampons, and secured by rope, you cross the Hochjochferner while learning about the unique features of this fascinating glacier world. The more adventurous can even rappel into a glacier crevasse. The descent leads via the Schöne Aussicht mountain hut back to Maso Corto.

INTRODUCTORY CLIMBING AT THE MARCHEGG CLIMBING GARDEN

The small but charming Marchegg climbing garden is well worth a visit: in addition to the rock face with various difficulty levels, there is a large meadow where you can relax and have fun. Under the professional guidance of a certified mountain guide, participants learn the basics of climbing.

TRAILRUNNING DAYS IN THE SCHNALSTAL VALLEY WITH DANI JUNG

Dani Jung from the Vinschgau Valley, one of the world's best trail runners, will accompany you on a trail running day and share his expertise with you. He will give you tips on running technique, pole technique, uphill and downhill and nutrition.

ADVENTURE RAILWAY STATION

The youth and adventure railway station at the former “Schnalsthal” station offers nostalgic and exciting railway experiences for the whole family: whether riding a draisine on a 500 m long track, enjoying a round trip on the garden railway, or watching the diesel locomotive wind its way through a miniature stone landscape. The mini steam locomotive is a highlight of the adventure railway. In the small red postal wagons of the Rhaetian Railway, visitors can relax, marvel, and enjoy the experience.
