Summer brings new trails, benches, and much more

By Jim Buchholz Schmeeckle Reserve Director Like nature’s own fireworks, wildflowers in the Zimmerman Prairie are beginning to bloom near the visitor center, a sure sign of summer. Spotted fawns are prancing through the woods, monarch butterflies are fluttering from flower to flower, and flocks of wild turkeys are scratching for food.

Despite the recent heat, summer is the busiest season Jim Buchholz for our intrepid crews who maintain trails and restore habitats in Schmeeckle.

This summer, 21 student employees serve as our office staff, maintenance staff, ecological restoration staff, and trail staff.

In addition, every Tuesday morning, a crew of five to six dedicated volunteers assist with trail and construction projects.

Grass has been planted, the cedar shake roof over the stage is finished, and Friends members are building the stage backdrop wall. Seeing pictures on Facebook is great, but there is no substitute for visiting the site. One visitor recently told me, “Wow! It’s much bigger than I expected!”

This project is possible only because of the many generous donors who supported this project. The amphitheater will be here for many years to come as a gift to our community.

I continue to be reminded of the generosity, kindness, and genuine love by our community for Schmeeckle Reserve.

The number of donors, construction staff, Schmeeckle Reserve staff, students, and volunteers who have come together to make the amphitheater a reality is simply amazing. We look forward to many years of programs, community concerts,

the annual arts contest, Candlelight Hike Festivals, interactive displays at community events, donor recognition events, and supporting outreach functions of Reserve staff when requested.

Advancement Committee

The lands committee plans and implements projects that enhance the land base, recreational opportunities, and facilities in Schmeeckle Reserve. Projects include habitat restoration, invasive species management, wildlife enhancement, hazardous tree management, aesthetic improvements, storm cleanup, trail/boardwalk construction and maintenance, recreational amenity and facility development, and educational signage.

The committee also evaluates potential property acquisition and expansion, when opportunities arise.

The Advancement Committee coordinates and provides input for revenue generation for Friends operations, investment funding, endowment objectives, and special project fundraising. The committee also develops and executes the annual Friends membership campaign.

Join the Friends of Schmeeckle Reserve in celebrating the grand opening of the Pankowski Friends Amphitheater. Funded entirely by donations, the amphitheater is a unique outdoor gathering space for the Stevens Point community.

Live music begins at 5:30 p.m. by Adam Greuel of Horseshoes & Hand Grenades, who will be joined by other local performers. A short program will start at 6 p.m. followed by more live music. Hors d’oeurvres and beverages will be served, and children’s activities will be offered

by UW-Stevens Point students. We hope to see you there!

Director, From Page 1 8-12, a WisCorps crew of seven, supported by a generous Friends donor, cleaned storm debris in the Reserve. WisCorps is a nonprofit organization that hires young adults to complete conservation projects throughout the state.

As you walk the trails, you will see incredible improvements these dedicated individuals have made: A new bridge was installed on the Green Circle Trail over a small creek, just east of the Granite Parkway. The bridge is wider and straighter than the original, providing safe passage for hikers and bicyclists.

A beautiful carved bench was constructed and installed at the northwest corner of Lake Joanis, a memorial to Judy Nantell, a longtime supporter of Schmeeckle.

A trail is being constructed along the water’s edge around the northeast side of the lake.

This visitor-created footpath was originally a jumble of roots, rocks, and eroded banks. The new trail is level, wide, and offers spectacular views of Lake Joanis.

Ashley King, a Schmeeckle student employee, helped plant native shrubs behind the visitor center in May. Friends of Schmeeckle member Jill Ziehr, a Master Gardener, designed the landscaping plan for the new wildlife habitat area.

A new carved bench on the northwest corner of Lake Joanis is a memorial to Judy Nantell, a long-time user of Schmeeckle who died last year. Judy’s family and friends funded the bench. It was constructed and installed by Schmeeckle student employees.

The memorial bench program helps support student staff and trail maintenance through the Friends of Schmeeckle Reserve. For more information, contact Schmeeckle at 715-346-4992.

Storm cleanup and invasive species removal continues around the visitor center and lake. The June 2017 windstorm left piles of dead trees stacked on top of each other and provided the perfect conditions for invasive buckthorn to grow. The crews have been busy clearing the downed trees and

debris, creating a park-like open forest habitat.

A backyard wildlife habitat area is being created at the visitor center. With funding from the Aldo Leopold Audubon Society, crews are planting native shrubs and excavating a waterfall, stream, and pond area. This is an ideal place to watch wildlife from the deck or the viewing windows inside the visitor center.

None of these projects would be possible without the continued support of our Friends. A large portion of our annual budget comes directly from donors like you.

Love for the Reserve is both personal, professional

During the Junior Audubon bird banding program on June 1 at Schmeeckle Reserve, I followed a wiry person in waders through light rain and underbrush to the first concealed mist net. That was Susan Schuller. Her 8-year-old daughter, Joy, squatted in stillness and, one nearly invisible line at a time, extricated the tiny flycatcher from the net, then put it safely into a weighing bag for examination and banding.

Joy’s ease with handling the small bird and in leading the way back to the visitor center comes from a lifetime of accompanying her family in the woods, and of hanging out with her mother as Susan leads environmental education activities.

Schmeeckle has always been a locus of family activity, the most natural place for Susan, her husband, Alvin, her son, Kai, and Joy to walk, bike, run, and attend Candlelight Hike Festivals. These are a tradition shared with another family, often prefaced with dinner together, then a bike ride to the corner, then an entry along a boardwalk into the magic of torches and jack-o’-lanterns. One of Susan’s professional goals is to help kids be “more aware of the natural world and of birds,” and she certainly lives this principle with her family.

Susan hasn’t always been a woodswoman. In fact, when she came to UW-Stevens Point as an undergraduate, she was an urban person who found the woods a bit alarming. Schmeeckle Reserve 6

“Why I Love the Reserve” is a regular feature in the Friends newsletter. If you would like to be interviewed for this feature, or if you want to write a first-person account, please contact Barbara Dixson at barbaradixson@gmail.com made the perfect introduction: real woods, but near civilization, and with those reassuring blue emergency lights at the entrances.

Susan cross-country skied one of the first times in her life through the Reserve, found that her undergraduate classes used it as an outdoor classroom, and turned to it herself as “a retreat during stressful times.”

The Junior Audubon program this spring was one of Susan’s volunteer activities.

It was a perfect fit since it’s a collaboration between the Friends of Schmeeckle Reserve (she’s a Friend) and the Aldo Leopold

Audubon Society (she’s on the board). Susan helped organize and lead all four of the Junior Audubon programs this spring, culminating in the bird banding day, which attracted over 70 participants on a rainy Saturday morning.

Likewise, Susan has been a supporter of the new Bird-Viewing Area in the visitor center, another Friends/Audubon collaboration.

Professionally as well as personally, Schmeeckle Reserve has played an ongoing role in Susan’s life. She worked for 17 years in environmental education outreach at the Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education at UW-Stevens Point, a commitment that naturally brought her and those she was serving into the Reserve.

For example, Susan taught a workshop series for teacher professional development in environmental education.

perennials. Another one focused on teacher wellness. In this one, 10 teachers looked at flora and fauna and experienced nature for spiritual wellbeing. As they contemplated water, they sat beside Lake Joanis for personal reflection.

Recently, Susan has been working on work/life balance by moving away from a full-time professional commitment. She laughed and said she realized almost at once how easy it was to wind up working more than fulltime with an array of part-time volunteer and work commitments.

In the past year, one of these was a teaching position with

Montello School District as a field biologist. In December, Susan brought 32 students to Schmeeckle to research environmentalists honored in the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame, located in the visitor center’s sunfilled south-facing room.

The impressive January cold didn’t slow the group down. In addition to studying their research subjects, the students followed the Trail of Reflections with university student guides, fell in love with the woodworking workshop in the visitor center basement, and began to imagine their own time on campus with Schmeeckle as their outdoor classroom.

Digging deep: Schmeeckle’s soils ideal for classes

By Barbara Dixson Friends Newsletter Editor As you’ve walked along the Moses Creek boardwalks or near the Schmeeckle Reserve Visitor Center, you may have noticed small groups of UW-Stevens Point students using a tall, drill-like tool to pull up narrow cylinders of earth and pile them onto tarps. These are the students from Bryant Scharenbroch’s Dr. Bryant Scharenbroch soil classes— Soil Genesis, Morphology, and Classification; Soil Profile Description; and Wetland Soils and Wetland Delineation.

The tall tool is called a bucket auger. And the point of these piles is for students to learn about soils by describing them, to see their uses and limitations, and to read the landscape to understand its history.

Scharenbroch really appreciates having Schmeeckle Reserve “right there. We’ve dug quite a few holes out there,” he chuckled, reflecting on the four years of student soil work he has led in the Reserve. For the first couple of holes—as students note the layers, the features, and the organisms associated with each drilling of soil—they may be completely lost, he said. But after 10 or so holes, “you can see the light bulbs click on in them, and they really understand it.”

they show some interesting features. Many of the soils on the east end of the Reserve are derived from outwash—the water-sorted sand and gravel left behind 10,000 years ago when the last glacier melted here. Moving west in the Reserve, the outwash thins and more of the bedrock is closer to the surface, as well as areas of glacial till (soil and rock fragments left by the glacier).

Organic soils can be found in depressions throughout the Reserve. The natural area has deciduous and coniferous trees, prairies, and wetland plants, and this variety of vegetation also affects the soils in different ways. Students can study how these soil-forming factors create the soils we have today

and they can begin to read the landscape.

In the Wetland Soils class, students study the Moses Creek restoration. Because of the success of the wetland restoration, the soil is becoming increasingly like wetland soil. In fact, scientists and policymakers alike use soils of this type to delineate wetlands.

Students in this class complete a project in which they apply their new skills and knowledge. They find a specific wetland in the Reserve, identify its boundaries, and make a precise map using soils, hydrology, and vegetation.

Friends of Schmeeckle Reserve

While Scharenbroch’s work on soils in Schmeeckle focuses primarily on student learning, it also supports his own research.

Scharenbroch, along with fellow UW-Stevens Point soils professor Jacob Prater, is working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Services to create and update soil maps of sites all over Wisconsin.

According to the NRCS website, these maps exist in 95 percent of U.S. counties, so completing the work in our state is an essential task.

The students who have succeeded in Scharenbroch’s classes and learned about soils in Schmeeckle make ideal employees to help conduct this work. So far, 10 students have joined in. This experience is valuable to student team members for solidifying their skills and knowledge as they move toward careers in environmental consulting, agronomy, or public agencies. The work consists of studying the soils, measuring vegetation, and creating usable online maps for the public. In addition to showing the current state of the soils, the maps reveal what the vegetation looks like now and what it might look like under various management approaches or successional cycles. The maps support the work of farmers, land use planners, foresters, hydrologists, biologists, ecologists, and more.

Next time you run across students in the Reserve gathered around a tarp dotted with soil piles, picture them in their future roles as skilled advisers and decision makers. And don’t worry—they fill the holes back in.

Hello from Walden, the Schmeeckle Kids Ambassador!

Summer is a great time to get outside and explore in Schmeeckle.

My mom and I took a great little loop hike recently that I think would be awesome for all kids. We started at the parking lot, walked through the Zimmerman Prairie, and turned left on the Green Circle Trail.

Right away we saw a wild turkey cross the trail and walk along a fallen tree like a balance beam. Of course, I followed and did the same, though I just couldn’t catch that speedy turkey.

Next we took a right onto the Plank Trail, which is a long

boardwalk through some wet woods leading toward the lake. At the end, we found a cool new trail along the lake that Schmeeckle’s student employees have been building this summer.

The old trail went through the woods away from the lake, but so many people wanted to walk close to the lake that they made their own path. Unfortunately, this led to lots of roots and rocks sticking out of the ground and erosion along the shore. The students are making the trail wider and more level so it is safe for everyone.

We turned left on the new Lake Loop. I saw a black squirrel running by the lake and followed it down to the water’s edge, but then ended up checking for water critters.

At the end of the new lake trail, we turned left onto the Moses Creek Trail. I saw a giant nursery web spider that created a web

in the top of some long grass.

Hundreds of baby spiders had just hatched and were making their way through the web maze.

Along the Moses Creek boardwalk, we also saw and heard red-winged blackbirds calling.

They were protecting their nests hidden somewhere in the tall grass.

We stopped to swing at the Wetland Overlook. Did you notice that plants grow on the roof above the swing? It’s called a “green roof” and the plants help to absorb moisture and keep the roof cool.

To complete our loop, we took a left on the Berard Oaks Trail and followed it until we met up with the Green Circle Trail again. As we got back to the Visitor Center, we saw a white-tailed deer near the new amphitheater with a fawn following close behind.

Every day is a new adventure on Schmeeckle’s trails!

Parting View: WisCorps pitches in at Schmeeckle In early July, a WisCorps crew cleaned up storm damage around the northeast side of Lake Joanis. WisCorps engages young adults in conservation work around the state. The crew chainsawed downed trees, hauled logs, and chipped brush. The fee for the crew was sponsored by an anonymous donation to the Friends of Schmeeckle.
