Summer brings new trails, benches, and much more By Jim Buchholz Schmeeckle Reserve Director Like nature’s own fireworks, wildflowers in the Zimmerman Prairie are beginning to bloom near the visitor center, a sure sign of summer. Spotted fawns are prancing through the woods, monarch butterflies are fluttering from flower to flower, and flocks of wild turkeys are scratching for food. Despite the recent heat, summer is the busiest season Jim Buchholz for our intrepid crews who maintain trails and restore habitats in Schmeeckle. This summer, 21 student employees serve as our office staff, maintenance staff, ecological restoration staff, and trail staff. In addition, every Tuesday morning, a crew of five to six dedicated volunteers assist with trail and construction projects. And during the week of July See Director, Page 4

The Pankowski Friends Amphitheater is nearly complete! The grand opening celebration is set for 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, with live music and a short program.
