On July 17, 1978, the Reserve was officially dedicated when the UW-Stevens Point Foundation donated a 50-acre parcel of land to the university. We are continuing to celebrate this milestone Jim Buchholz anniversary with several exciting projects that will enhance the aesthetics and diversity of the

natural area for generations to come.

The weather this summer has thankfully been quieter than last year, when a massive June windstorm flattened thousands of trees in the Reserve. This year, we’re continuing to deal with the remnants of the storm, cutting hazardous trees along trails and clearing the downed debris. But we’re also using the storm damage as a unique opportunity. A 4-acre area around the southwest corner of Lake Joanis, hit especially hard by the storm, is being restored into a native forest habitat.

Few things these days literally stop me in my tracks.

These did, and in a good way.

One of my fellow volunteers from Operation Bootstrap came up to me at the spring Candlelight Hike Festival Jerry at Schmeeckle Lineberger Reserve and thanked us for having the Hike. She was with her adult daughter and young granddaughter. She said, “I have lived here all of my life and have never been to Schmeeckle Reserve.”

We chatted for a bit and off they went chasing her granddaughter.

Last week my favorite neighbor, who has been in the Point area for about a year, posted on Facebook that Schmeeckle was the new favorite place for her and her 4-year-old daughter. She posted some great photos from the See President, Page 2

students, and staff have devoted a tremendous amount of time and effort toward the restoration project. Despite the unseasonably cold spring, several groups planted grass seed and over 200 native trees chosen to grow in the wet soil. Deer cages and tubes were installed to protect the fledgling forest. Invasive buckthorn is being controlled by a dedicated student crew. A tall 100-footby-100-foot deer “exclosure” (to keep deer out) is currently under construction and will vividly show the impact deer have on vegetation growth.

A special thank you to forestry professor Dr. Michael Demchik, who has been instrumental in planning and implementing the restoration.

Also, a big thank you to organizations that have donated funding and volunteer time toward the project, including the Rotary Club of Greater Portage County ($500), the Rotary Club of Stevens Point ($400), Portage County ($350 on behalf of county employees with milestone anniversaries), and, most recently, Hampton Inn Plover-Stevens Point ($1,000 Hilton Travel with Purpose Action Grant).

Schmeeckle volunteers and staff continued installing a 100-foot-by-100-foot deer “exclosure” fence in late July.

Be sure to walk through the restoration area this summer to witness the birth of a new forest. Wildflowers are blooming, and bird houses installed this spring are alive with nesting House Wrens, Bluebirds, and Tree Swallows.

The tree seedlings are growing leaves, and although it will take many years, you can almost picture them growing into a healthy, mature forest. What a perfect gift for Schmeeckle Reserve on its 40th birthday!

This place that you as a Friend of the Reserve know so well is pretty amazing.

We have the opportunity to be in the middle of an awesome wooded area, among winding trails, next to a deer or listening to “peepers” in the spring, all within a very short drive, walk, or bike ride. Millions of people in our country

have no such easy access to “an island of green.” We are fortunate indeed.

As you well know, these are challenging times for institutions.

The support that Schmeeckle Reserve receives directly from the university is diminishing. You may see some changes in routine trail work, removal of invasive species, or other services in the next year.

Your support of the Friends will help us help the Reserve continue to be the amazing place that we know so well, and that our new and old neighbors have recently met!

Friends Amphitheater closer to becoming reality

Progress continues on the Pankowski Friends Amphitheater.

We have been working with the Rettler Corporation on finalizing the construction bid documents, with the bids opening day slated for July 26th!

We have about $205,000 committed toward the estimated $235,000 project budget. A sincere thank you to the 80 individuals, families, and organizations who have already generously donated.

They are listed on the following page. Thank you for all of your support so far!

We will certainly need to continue our fundraising efforts to come up with the remainder of the cost of the project, so it’s not too late to join the growing list of amphitheater donors.

Based on the bid opening date, construction readiness preparation, and construction itself we are looking at a late October or early November completion date.

We will plan our grand opening and the Candlelight Hike events dependent on the realities of construction.

If you are interested and are at the Reserve in the near future, the area for the amphitheater seating and stage is staked out southeast of the visitor center. This will give you a general sense of where it will sit in the Reserve and the approximate size.

Why I Love the Reserve: Carrying on husband’s legacy

Last year, I was honored to become a member of the board of Friends of Schmeeckle Reserve. Although I am not a UW-Stevens Point grad, my late husband, John M. Ross, was a 1958 graduate in conservation.

His teacher, mentor, and friend? None other than Fred Schmeeckle. The Schmeeckles were good friends of the Ross family. Bea Schmeeckle was John’s kindergarten teacher. She often brought interesting nature items to school to show her class. John was hooked on the out-of-doors then and there. A special relationship was born.

One of the first things John and I did after we were married in 1965 was to visit the Schmeeckles at their home. I think he was seeking approval of me from these very important people in his life. It must have been a good report because we were together for 42 years.

John didn’t stay in the area during his career.

He worked briefly for First National Bank after graduation. Then he was off to be a ranger-naturalist for the National Park Service on the Blue Ridge Parkway. A degree in parks and recreation followed from Indiana University in 1964. From there he moved on to the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, Department of the Interior, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. There he worked on a major outdoor recreation report and the Wild Rivers Study Team on the Brule and Namekagon rivers in Wisconsin and Minnesota. And no, it was not his canoe that rammed Stuart Udall’s canoe amidships on their study tour.

Indiana University called once again, this time to a teaching position in his old department. There John spent the rest of his career, eventually teaching over 30 courses in park planning, recreation management, nature artists and writers, and fundraising. For the last 10 years of his tenure, he was fundraising director for the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. But his true joy was working with students interested in the out-of-doors.

Retirement brought new opportunities for John to use his expertise and experience. We built a retirement home on the Waupaca Chain O’ Lakes, bringing us back within range of UWSP once again. He offered his help to the school and was asked to join the board of

the UWSP Foundation. Later, he became its president.

John was so pleased when UWSP created the Schmeeckle Reserve, naming it after his long-time friend and teacher. He wanted to see it develop into a major focal point in the region for a top quality outdoor educational and recreational experience.

He was happy to help in any way he could to be of benefit to his alma mater.

Shortly before his death in 2006, John learned of the plans for an amphitheater to be built on the Reserve in his honor. He was so grateful that he had been able to contribute to the mission of the College of Natural Resources and the Reserve and wished them great success in the future.

Now it is my pleasure to be able to continue as he would have wanted in furthering the Reserve’s development well into the 21st century. My husband taught me everything that I know about outdoor experiences. Visitors flock to bird-viewing area in visitor center

Our list of bird sightings at the Schmeeckle bird viewing area continues to grow. Flashes of red can be seen on Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Red-headed Woodpeckers, and Northern Cardinals. Deer, unbothered by people watching just a few feet away, hang out under the feeders to eat dropped seed. Our five nesting boxes around the visitor center haven’t seen as much action as we hoped, but the new boxes in the restoration area on the south side of the lake have nesting House Wrens, Tree Swallows, and Eastern Bluebirds.

The bird viewing area of the visitor center is located in the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame gallery with the plaques and includes comfortable bent-hickory rocking chairs, binoculars, and identification materials. Earlier this year, we installed a “bird cam” on the platform feeder, which displays a close-up view of birds eating on a TV monitor inside. We’ve also created a fun kids’ area with puppets, books, and activity pages.

families sit together, smiling and pointing out the window. Kids love to look through the binoculars (at everything, not just birds!) and it’s exciting to look through the guides, identify a mystery bird, and write it on the bird-sightings board. Stop by—there is always something fun to watch and do!

We are always seeking donations for the bird viewing area. Our rectangular squirrelproof hopper feeder needs to be replaced. Also, a young Boy Scout from Neenah donated a hanging platform feeder that has been placed

outside the large window in the Browse Shop. We would like to use it as a squirrel feeder and are seeking donations of corn. We are running low on mixed bird seed and do not have enough to last the rest of summer. This life experience pretty much sums up my reasons for loving Schmeeckle Reserve and wanting to see it bloom and grow. In one of my own jobs, as development director for Hilltop Garden and Nature Center at

Indiana University, our theme was “Come Grow With Us.” I think that is a fitting explanation of my purpose in working on the Friends board, to help make this place a home for everyone to enjoy for many years to come.

Wetland area an opportunity for restoration, research

By Barbara Dixson Friends Newsletter Editor From the time Paul Skawinski came to UW-Stevens Point as an undergraduate student in 2005, the rampant invasive Phragmites grass in the Student Memorial Area on the southern edge of Schmeeckle Reserve bothered him. This invasive species grew three times as tall as a person, obscured the light, and choked out every other plant.

Now, with an Master of Science in watershed management Paul Skawinski and working as an outreach specialist for the UW-Extension Lakes Program, Paul has waged a campaign against this enemy.

What does Paul see emerging?

A wildlife garden. A beautiful place to linger and remember those we have lost. A joyful home for butterflies, birds, and amphibians. The valiant forces of biodiversity are winning!

An undertaking as grand as this one needs a wide array of partners to succeed. Early on, as Paul contemplated the challenge, he realized that Brock Woods, a DNR wetland invasive species specialist, was looking for small populations of Phragmites to eradicate so that more might be known about ways to control this plant statewide. Thus a grant from the DNR provided foliar herbicides that were applied in 2014 and 2015, killing the

Nothing else could grow until the detritus was cleared. So the next step involved not only Paul and his students, but also the Schmeeckle crew and a flock of volunteers. In 2016, Schmeeckle staff and 30 volunteers ranging in age from 3 to 75 pulled up the dead plants. Some waded waist deep in mucky water, some made piles of sodden plant matter, some hauled loads to the compost pile, and soon the area was clear, like a garden in early spring.

with next steps. One did a seedbank study, asking what would happen now if the soil were left on its own to repopulate itself?

The student collected soil, tended and observed it, and got two dozen species in the soil sample— almost all of them undesirable, nonnative weeds. New plants were clearly needed.

More help came from the DNR, which provided $2,700 for plant purchases, from Schmeeckle Reserve, which matched this amount, and from the plant nurseries that provided deep discounts: J & J Aquatic Nursery in Wild Rose, Wisconsin, and Prairie Moon Nursery in Minnesota. The Schmeeckle deer herd “helped,” too, discovering the delicious trove and pawing through the deer netting to take a sample in the

single night between delivery and planting. No great harm done, though. And then Paul, his students, the Schmeeckle crew, and local volunteers all worked together to plant and protect the seedlings.

Continuing the research project, Paul has designed and observed three different approaches.

One area has just seeds (easy to plant, and inexpensive). One has just seedlings, called “plugs” (labor intensive and much more expensive). One has a mix of seeds and plugs. As expected, Paul and his student researchers found that the area with just seeds did poorly, while the plugs proved most successful. Student researchers are following up on remaining questions: What are long-term results of planting seeds versus planting both seeds and plugs? Will cutting the stems and rhizomes of the Phragmites with a spade work better to eradicate it than hand pulling? Is it possible to selectively apply an herbicide that could be harmful to other plants, targeting just the Phragmites? Students working with Paul have learned a great deal about research design, invasive species management, botany, and working with volunteers. These expanded skills have served them well as they’ve moved on to graduate programs and careers. For example, student Kaira Kamke who helped with the restoration project is now an aquatic ecologist for a lab in Minnesota.

Last summer—July 2017—Paul Skawinski and Dr. Rachel Schultz, a UWSP faculty member who studies how plant communities affect wetlands, took a plant inventory in the Student Memorial Area. To their delight, they found 86 species growing. Forty-five of these had been Dr. Rachel planted, 41 were volunteers, and Schultz only five were unwelcome invasives.

Hi! It’s your friend Walden, the Schmeeckle Kids Ambassador.

Recently my mom and I went to investigate the mysterious big boxes in Lake Joanis. Have you seen them? There is a row of them along the west side of the lake. The ducks love to sit on top of them!

The nearby interpretive sign was a great clue in helping us solve the mystery.

I discovered that the boxes are like secret bug hideouts for insects called milfoil weevils.

The bugs are super small—about half the size of a pencil eraser (2-3 mm). They have big black eyes, light brown bodies, and six legs.

What makes them extra special is they only eat plants called watermilfoil. Eurasian watermilfoil is an invasive plant in Lake Joanis. It is growing out of control and taking over the whole lake. Having too much watermilfoil means sunlight cannot get to the bottom of the lake for other plants to grow.
