CARROLLTON FOOTBALL
Experience to lead Warriors’ football team in 2018 By Jordan Miller
Sports Editor
CARROLLTON – Year one is in the books for Carrollton Head Coach Phil Mauro and things are looking up for his return to the helm after posting a 3-7 record in 2017, including a seven-game losing streak during the season. The second-year coach returns to the field with 19 returning lettermen (four offensive starters and nine defensive). Mauro plans to use the large number of returners to the team’s advantage in 2018. “We’re looking forward to building off of the last two games of the season,” said Coach Mauro. “It’s always good to end on a winning note…you can’t teach experience.”
The Warriors opened 2017 by defeating St. Clairsville, who went on to finish the season 82. Sporting a 1-7 record entering week nine, the Warriors routed a 7-1 Canton South team, 21-8, for their second win of the season. The Warriors outlasted Minerva, 32-26, in a week 10 overtime thriller. Leading the team on the defensive side of the ball will be senior defensive end, Calob Dalton. Dalton verbally committed to Western Michigan in the off season. Mauro says the Warriors’ defense will be a force to be reckoned with in 2018. “We’re looking forward to building off of our defense, that is definitely a strength of ours,” Mauro said. “We’ve got nine of those guys back.”
DANNY’S
The Warriors return both of their leading tacklers, juniors Bryce Carte and Connor Clark. Though the Warriors have faith in their defense, it’s still uncertain who take the snaps by the first game. “We’re going into the season not exactly sure who our guy is going to be,” Mauro mentioned. Although there is still a
Head Coach Phil Mauro
question mark as to who will be this season’s signal caller, Mauro said there is a bit of a battle for the QB spot. “We’re working Connor Clark (junior) and we’re working Teagin Mohn (senior) at QB and Luke Warner (sophomore) was our freshmen quarterback last year. All three of those guys are taking snaps,” noted Mauro.
One two-way player to keep an eye on for the Warriors is senior Trevor Boggess. “He had three interception against St. Clairsville last season. He’ll get a lot more snaps on the offensive side of the ball.” It’s been over a decade since the Warriors last playoff appearance and conference championship but with a brand-new league,
Conference: Eastern Buckeye Conference Division: II 2017 record: 3-7, 2-5 Head Coach: Phil Mauro Years as coach: second Returning lettermen: 19
comes a fresh mindset. This upcoming season will also be the inaugural season for the Eastern Buckeye Conference (EBC). Other teams included in the EBC besides Carrollton are: Canton South, Minerva, Salem, Marlington, Alliance and West Branch. “It’s a new league and we’re excited,” said Mauro as he spoke about the season’s anticipation. “Someone’s going to be the firsttime conference champion, I don’t know who it’s going to be, but I know we’ve got as good a chance as anybody else.” Coach Mauro says the team plans on finishing game this season. “There wasn’t a game late in the first quarter (besides Coventry) where we didn’t have an opportunity to win it. The expectation here is to be able to finish.” Carrollton will open their season Aug. 24 at St. Clairsville. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. The Warriors first home game is Aug. 31 vs. Coventry at 7 p.m.

Minerva senior class has eyes set on first win of careers By Jordan Miller
Sports Editor
MINERVA – Minerva has many goals entering the 2018 season, but one sticks out more than others. “Our senior class came up with a couple of goals. Goal number one is to win their first game,” Minerva football coach Lance Willison said. Willison is entering his third season as the Lions signal caller. In the last three seasons, the Lions are 0-30. Willison says this year’s senior class has the will to win. “Hopefully we can do that this year,” Willison said. “I really feel like we have some talent on the field. We are young but the group of kids we have on the field are a very young group of talented football players.” Along with a new mindset for this season, the Lions will have a new quarterback at the helm. Alex Kimble takes the snaps this season, replacing graduated Brock Croston. “He made about three starts for us last year,” Willison said. “He did get some varsity
experience and he’ll be the leader this year.” When he’s not connecting with receivers on offense, he’s defending them on defense. “It’s a nice thing for us to look over there and see our quarterback raise his hand because he’s willing to play defense. He cares about winning and wants to be on the field to help the team,” noted Willison. “He is a kid who is willing to give up his body. He’ll give up everything he can in order for us to try and win a game this year and I’m extremely excited to coach him.” The Lions 2017 leading tackler, Dominic Slentz, returns to lead the defense this season. Now a senior, Willison says the Lions are going to rely on Slentz’s leadership. “He is certainly our vocal and spiritual leader on the defensive side of the ball,” Willison said. “He does a really good job getting our newer lineman and linebackers adjusted. We’re really looking forward to a big year from him.” Slentz is a power running back on offense at the fullback
position. Other than Slentz and Kimble, the Lions return six other seniors. There will be a plethora of big guys on the defensive side of the ball. Willison believes his young team will improve as the season progresses. “I think with a young team, that team gets better as we move through the season and I think that we can do that,” said Willison. Chance Martineau will be taking handoffs from Kimble. Martineau, a sophomore, is described as “fun to watch” by Willison. “We know how tough this league can be so we need to continue to grow each week as a team,” Willison mentioned. “Our kids are hungry for a win and if they continue to show that in practice, I have no doubt that it will take care of itself this season.” The Lions open the season August 24 at home against the United Eagles. The Eagles bested Minerva 21-14 last season.

The Hornets lost Drew Hutchison to graduation in the spring. “Derk will be taking over for his brother (Drew) at the QB position and has had a great summer,” Chiurco says. “We believe Derk has all the tools to be special. Versatility to lead Rockets to success Rockets graduate six, return 13 to field for 2018 football season By JORDAN MILLER
Sports Editor
BOWERSTON – The Conotton Valley Rockets are hoping to build from last year’s one-win season under second year head coach Brant Gardner. “There’s been a lot of improvement, we’ve added to our coaching staff, so we’ve been able to break down offense and defense,” Gardner said. “We’ve had a lot of guys start stepping up.” The Rockets return 13 lettermen to the gridiron including senior Kris Hostetler and Braden Caldwell; the two will share the QB duties with Hostetler taking most of the snaps. “We only lost six seniors so
most of our team who is returning know what to expect now,” Gardner said. The second-year coach says his team’s strength will be their utility players. “Our kids don’t have the luxury of playing one position, or even two positions. They have to know everything,” mentioned Coach Gardner. “If you’re a lineman and someone goes down, we just fill that gap right in and pick up where we left off.” The Rockets’ coach says he hopes the team’s offseason workouts and conditioning keep them competitive in each game. “We want to be in every game till the fourth quarter,” he said. “We had some rough games last
season. We plan on being in a fight up until the last minute.” Coach Gardner says his senior linebacker (Jimmy McGill) will be the leader on defense in 2018. “He’s going to lead the defense very well this year,” says Gardner. “He’s a very positive kid.” Per the coach, the Rockets need to stay mentally strong. “We can’t let them get down on themselves,” Gardner said. “We have some young guys in very important positions…we hope to get them up to game speed by the time the season starts.” The Rockets open their season Friday, Aug. 25 on the road against rival Strasburg. Teamwork is key to Carrollton runners’ success BY JORDAN MILLER
Sports Editor
CARROLLTON – First-year head coach Jon Naylor says the season ahead looks promising for both the girls and boys crosscountry teams. “The boys have a lot of strong seniors looking to achieve what they have never done, make it to the state meet,” Naylor said. Runners who are returning to the course this season are: seniors – Connor Rutledge, Jon Russell, Evan Days and Jayson Naylor. Juniors – Alex Carrothers, Nate Blake and Adam Chaney. Coach Naylor says the girls team will rely on experience. “Their strength is found in their experience, three of the returning lettermen have been to the state meet and are hungry to return,” says Naylor. Seniors Micah Donley and Cindy Lewis will lead the squad.
“They will be strong front runners for the team. The girls have put in more miles this summer than in the past and hungry to see the state meet once more in their high school cross-country career.” Naylor says the boys squad will see success if they rely on each other. “They do not have a strong front runner but they have an excellent pack. My hope is that there will be less than thirty seconds between our first runner and our seventh,” Naylor said. “The boys have been working hard and putting in the summer miles, I expect great things from them.” Last season the Warrior boys placed fourth in the conference, the girls finished fifth. The cross-country team will travel to Pickerington High School Aug. 25 to race in the Pickerington North Classic. Race time is set for 8:30 p.m.

CHS boys soccer team seeing growth By JORDAN MILLER
Sports Editor
CARROLLTON – Last season the boys soccer team finished 313 overall, including a 0-7 record in Conference play. This year the Carrollton boys soccer team will look for a fresh start as they square off in a brand-new league, the Eastern Buckeye Conference (EBC). Second-year head coach, AJ Atkinson, says his team is starting to gel together and should be ready for battle. “We have a very tight-knit team that is learning more and more how to play together as a team,” Atkinson stated. “Last year we had a lot of guys who had not played soccer before and only a couple who had experience playing high school soccer, so it makes it tough
when you throw them all out there together on the field.” Atkinson says the team is young but experienced, as they only lost two seniors last year and return seven, now sophomores, to the field. “I have seen huge improvements from last season to this season. It really is quite remarkable,” mentioned Atkinson. He says although the team seems to be progressively improving, they cannot be content. “However, we cannot be content. We still have a lot more growth needed before we reach our goals.” The boys soccer team will travel to Sandy Valley to take on the Cardinals Saturday Aug. 25 at 2 p.m.

Lady Warriors return 10 players to the field By JORDAN MILLER
Sports Editor
CARROLLTON – New season, new coach, new league. The Carrollton Lady Warriors will be led by first year head coach Brandon Irwin in the 2018 soccer season. Irwin hopes his team surpasses last season’s 411-3 overall mark in his inaugural season. Carrollton returns 10 letter winners to the field, including six seniors, one junior and three sophomores. Seniors include Diana Luyster, Layna Pasiuk, Leanna Mitchell,
Faith Willis, Sienna Claypool and Alivia Bentley. Junior Addison Ramey. Sophomores Addison Irwin, Ashlynn Frabel and Kyra Bodo. Coach Irwin believes the Lady Warriors can compete for a conference championship this season. “I’m looking forward to the first year of the newly formed Eastern Buckeye Conference (EBC),” Irwin said. “I feel we have enough talent to be in the hunt for a championship.” The Lady Warriors will travel to Salem Aug. 29 to take on the Quakers in EBC action.

The Lady Warriors posted an overall record of 20-5 last year while finishing second in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference (NBC) with an 113 record. This season, the Lady Warriors will compete in a new league, the Eastern Buckeye Conference (EBC). “We have a strong league and it will be interesting to see who shows up and competes,” Head Coach Amanda Tressa said. Sadie Green, a second team NBC player and District V

Boys golf team hoping for continued success By JORDAN MILLER

CARROLLTON – Head Coach Chris Barto and the boys golf team are striving for continued success after finishing last season 13-2, placing second in the conference. “We look to be very competitive this year,” Barto said. “We lost five seniors this past year and need a solid four to five scores every night.” The Warriors lost two of their
top golfers to graduation. Carrollton’s first golf state qualifier Christian Barto and Northeastern Buckeye Conference (NBC) honorable mention Emmett Davis. Coach Barto says the team will rely on underclassmen to produce this season. “We will need our underclassmen to step up and play consistent each and every match.” Senior Drue Moore and junior Jimmy Birong will lead the team this season.
Coach Barto says he expects sophomore Coby Weiland to produce in 2018, saying “he showed promise in his freshman year and looks to secure a varsity position this year.” “Junior Josh Shepherd has shown improvement over the summer and looks to see time on varsity as well,” Barto stated. “Juniors Griffin Bagozzi and Tre Mitchell also will contribute to the campaign.” Barto says he thinks his squad has the ability to place in the top of the league this season.
