Adena swears in new council members

One of the first orders of business was swearing in new council members: Nicholas Wallace and Kelly Kropka. Wallace was sworn in first (by mayor Brenda Roski) and took his oath before the council while standing below the American flag. Now Wallace will join his father Roger and the rest of the Adena council at the round table. Kelly Kropka was also sworn in. However, hers went a

little differently than Wallace’s. Kropka had already been a council member leading into the 2021 local election, but her term ended in 2022. She opted to submit herself as a candidate after the election instead of running on the ballot. This option meant that other interested candidates could also submit their eligibility via letters of interest or recommendations for open council seats.

However, after going into an executive session, the current sitting council decided to reinstate Kropka. Much like Wallace, Kropka took her oath in front of the flag, confirming all council seats for 2022.

Harrison Hills issues mask mandate as COVID numbers rise again

BY REBECCA BRATTEN WEISS Harrison News-Herald Reporting Journalist On Monday, Jan. 3, the Harrison Hills school district announced they are resuming mask mandates, with reasonable exceptions. There is no established end set for the mandate, but they will evaluate as the situation progresses.

Harrison County health administrator Garen Rhome said his department supports the mandate. “A school system operates in a community,” he said. “And a community is tied to its school system. It’s a modern facility with great ventilation, but also where the most individuals convene indoors on one day in Harrison County.”

This mandate comes as COVID numbers in Harrison County are climbing again. In the one-week period from Wednesday, Dec. 29 to Wednesday, Jan. 5, 120 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Harrison County. This brings the cumulative total number of cases, since the start of the pandemic, to approximately 2,500.

In a county of just under 15,000 residents, that’s about 17% of the population. As per CDC calculations, the present case rate is about 700 out of a theoretical 100,000 cases.

Rhome said that recent holiday gatherings are a factor in the increase. The numbers went up after people gathered for Thanksgiving, but they did go back down again. “We’ll see what happens this time,” Rhome said.

Outside Harrison County, the rest of the state is seeing even sharper accelerations. And the hospitalization numbers are also going up.

“This is day seven in a row of a record number of Ohioans hospitalized with COVID-19,” Rhome said, speaking with the News-Herald on Jan. 5. That day saw 6,457 people hospitalized.

And, Rhome pointed out, more than 3,000 of these hospitalizations are occurring in hospital regions very close to Region 8, where Harrison County is located.

As Rhome has repeatedly emphasized, the hospitalization numbers are key to understanding how an area is doing with respect to keeping the pandemic under control.

It’s less a question of how many people are infected than how many people are infected and sick enough to go to the hospital. And though no cases of the highly-transmissible omicron variant have yet been reported in Harrison County, once it becomes the dominant strain, the area can expect to see even more increases in hospitalizations — “not because it’s more severe, but because more people will be infected,” Rhome said.

An issue the county faces presently is insufficient tests to meet the rising demand. The county health department has ordered new tests from the Ohio Department of Health, but as of Jan. 5, they had not yet arrived. Rhome said individuals seeking tests should contact their local library system. And if you can’t test and have symptoms? “Just stay home.”

“There’s no other one-acre lot that I can think of,” she said. “They’re checking everywhere.

But there’s not enough traffic.” That was the project’s biggest holdup: traffic flow. Dollar General didn’t feel strongly enough about the amount of traffic, but Roski wondered whether or not the metrics reflected the village fairly.

She questioned the timing of the traffic flow survey and whether or not numerous road construction projects and closures could have factored into the results. Despite the accuracy of the traffic study, the point remains: Dollar General has opted out of the location at the old school building.

But hope was not lost on the council’s part.

“I’m not giving up,” Roski declared. “[It’s] still going to be my top priority.”

There are some other suitable one-acre lots that could house a Dollar General, but council members bounced ideas on which ones would work and which ones wouldn’t.

While the council pitched other potential locations, nothing concrete was settled on during the Jan. 4 meeting. The topic was tabled for the time being. And in the meantime, Roski was going to reach out to other developers.

Adena’s dollar store dream isn’t dead, but the council realized they’ll have to pivot.

2022 Dog Licenses Harrison County Auditor Allison Anderson reminds Dog Owners to get their Dog Licenses by January 31st , 2022. According to Ohio Law, every person who owns, keeps, or harbors a dog more than three months of age, shall, on or after the first day of December, but before the thirty-first day of January of each year, register their dog(s) with the county Auditor. The Jewett council is dealing with water and drainage issues that have been affecting both public and private property in the village.

Water has been accumulating in yards, especially on properties behind High Street.

Additionally, there is concern that a sinkhole could potentially develop on Main Street if the water runoff and drainage problems are not corrected. Other drainage problems included water coming out of a private lawn when the village does a hydrant flush and pump panels on Main Street needing to be redone.

Convening on Jan. 5, the council discussed several possibilities for managing drainage in

the village. One option for dealing with the accumulating water could be to put in a catch basin. But more extensive repairs may need to be done to deal with the possible sinkhole issue since repeatedly filling the dip on Main Street has not corrected the problem. When the topic of a grant to install storm drains was raised, the village’s attorney, Jenna Hokes, suggested that they use some of the funds made available for capital improvements thanks to the American Recovery Act. Hokes explained that the funds have to be used for engineering costs for a whole new project — not merely a repair — so the grant must be written up very carefully. However, she seemed hopeful that the funds could be used to put in storm drains for the village.

Drug cases on the docket for the Court of Common Pleas

The Harrison County Court of Common Pleas saw two drug-related cases when they convened on Jan. 4.

Floyd Burge, accused of aggravated possession of drugs (a fifth-degree felony), appeared via videoconference from the Jefferson County Justice Center. Burge’s jury trial has been set for Feb. 22, as he is unwilling to accept the state’s offer of 30 months in the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. Burge stated bluntly, “Prison won’t help me. I need rehab.”

Judge T. Shawn Hervey seemed to take Burge’s request seriously, stating that there might be “room for compromise.” He suggested that public defender C. Adrian Pincola, who

represents the defendant, discuss the matter with prosecutor Lauren Knight and see if they can “come up with something.”

Present in the courtroom was defendant Maria Flickinger, represented by attorney Dan Guinn. Flickinger faces charges for aggravated possession of drugs and aggravated possession of fentanyl, both fifth-degree felonies. Flickinger entered a guilty plea and was sentenced to two years of community-based control, concurrent with her sentences in Tuscarawas and Carroll Counties, and 80 hours of community service, with a reserved 10-month prison sentence and credit for time served. Flickinger was concerned about whether she would be able to regain driving privileges. The court would have to look at that, Hervey said, once the defendant had completed her time at the Eastern Ohio Correction Center’s women’s facility.

Tater Ridge Farms Marketplace reflects on 2021, motivated for ‘22

County 4-H and Fair Board planning new equestrian facility

Julie Hidey, owner of the Tater Ridge Farms Marketplace (740-945-4093) in Scio, recently opened up about her 2021 and took the time to introspect on life’s little lessons and the stumbling blocks as a small business owner.

Hidey is a retired nurse, and she mentioned that the Marketplace is something she’s always wanted to do. But what a time for a fledgling business owner. COVID has been a kiss of death for many small businesses around the country. And Hidey readily admitted that COVID-19 was a factor, especially as a newer and smaller company trying to make its way.

She was honest on the COVID factor and its role in starting a small business in a coronavirus climate, but 2021 wasn’t without its silver linings for the Marketplace. 2021 might not have reached all her expectations, but Hidey was thankful for some of those little building blocks she was able to lay for the foundation: opening the store in the first place, bringing in vendors, and even seeing some of those vendors make a little money.

For those unaware, the Tater Ridge Farms Marketplace is a flea market-boutique on Scio’s Main Street (233 E. Main St.). The marketplace offers a space for nearby vendors to post up and sell some of their products. Hidey spent 2021 curating them from around Harrison County and giving them lots in the building to set up their own mini-store — stores within a store, as Hidey described them. Each little piece of Tater Ridge Farms is comprised of a unique Harrison County artist, craftsman, creator, or business owner. And every tiny venue can set up their booth and use their own storefront name as they see fit. The silver linings were mentioned; the 22 vendors that Hidey lined up over the past year were some of them.

would also like to see Tater Ridge hosting events eventually. She mentioned BBQs, card games, catering events, and birthdays. And they’re just some of the reasons she’s going to “try real hard” for all her new-year goals. There will be some satisfaction on Hidey’s part by simply bringing people together. Hidey added that she hopes to see the marketplace become a “gathering place for friends to come in and craft together.” She has plans to bring in local artisans to lead classes throughout 2022, as well.

she recognized that the year didn’t occur in a vacuum. “We did OK,” Hidey stated when looking back through 2021, but she was hardly dejected. In fact, she was optimistic for 2022 and beyond, confident that this year would be a little better after building momentum last year.

She understood going into the endeavor, it wasn’t going to happen overnight, but she’s “learning to be patient” along the way; it’s still a “work in progress,” Hidey added.

Word of mouth has been an important tool for Hidey’s business so far, and she’s hoping that the more people talk, the more customers it’ll eventually bring in. It doesn’t stop there, either.

The verbal advertising is free, but it takes time.

So she introduced some other ad platforms: Facebook, TV, and newspaper. She’s hoping they all pay off in 2022 and get the Tater Ridge Farms name out in the open.

But speaking of the Tater Ridge Farms name, it’s a little more personal than meets the eyes.

The shop pays respects to Hidey’s late husband, Rick, and in that mold, it’s somewhat of a guiding light for her family. Hidey’s husband went by “Tater,” so she worked his nickname into the business as an homage. And that way, he’s always there — supporting the community and Hidey’s family in his own way.

By Hidey’s words, she’s going to “keep plugging.” She wants to make the Marketplace bigger and better. And that’s just who Julie Hidey is. She wants to make Scio a little bit better and set a good example for her family — notably her grandchildren. She explained that she wants to be able to continue on and leave a legacy for them — a legacy of hard work, resilience, and how it leads to achievement.

Furthermore, Hidey wants to positively impact the town and give people a reason to visit the village. She wants to make Scio a “pretty little town,” one that showcases a refreshed sense of pride.

Hidey unabashedly emphasized her mission statement and the two main pillars that hold it up: family and community. It’s simple; Hidey wants to make a difference in Scio and be a good role model for her grandchildren. And that’s her motivation behind the Tater Ridge Farms Marketplace.

With those winds in her sail, Hidey was seemingly indefatigable: “I’m not giving up.”

BY REBECCA BRATTEN WEISS Harrison News-Herald Reporting Journalist The Harrison County Agricultural Society has been raising money for a new equestrian facility at the fairgrounds for the county’s 4-H equine program. The present barn at the fairgrounds, which has been in use since the 1940s, has been condemned and is no longer safe for housing horses. Additionally, the old arena at the grounds was technically too small.

The new arena, a project that cost approximately $100,000, was completed in time for last year’s fair, but they hope to finish the barn in time for this year’s fair in June.

Jessie Birney of the horse committee explained that aside from being too old and too small, there were other issues with the existing equestrian facility. For one thing, there were drainage issues. For another, the barn was too far from the rest of the fair activities. “A lot of kids show other livestock, so it was hard for them to get back and forth, and they didn’t have access to the food area. Bathrooms were also an issue,” she said. The distance made it difficult for visitors to watch the shows or see the horses.

So, when they were given some land near Belmont College, the horse committee and fair board decided to put their new barn and arena there. The new site is more central to the fair, with other activities and amenities more readily accessible.

Though they don’t have a contractor assigned to the barn project yet, they do have estimates.

They also have a definite plan for the new construction: 40-by-80 feet dimensions, 30 stalls, a tack area, and a wash area. They are also planning on having an announcer’s stand and a restroom facility constructed.

a horse barn must be constructed with safety and noise issues in mind. And it has to be userfriendly for the kids, too.

Birney said, “We keep telling kids, you deserve nice things here. We want to give you a facility that will last another 80 to 100 years.”

However, the project might be held up due to the ongoing sewer line project. The sewer line runs through the fairgrounds, which could delay some construction aspects. But once the facility is finished, it will mean far more opportunities for young equestrians. Because the new arena is all-weather, they can now organize training events, clinics, night rides, horse camps, and fun shows. Already, starting at last year’s fair, the horse committee was able to arrange a mounted shooting event.

Birney shared that the 4-H equine program is a great stepping stone for area children and teens, many of whom go on to be professionals in equestrian industries. Career options in the horse world are not just in training and showing. Young people may go on to work as nutritionists or veterinarians as well.

“Even if you don’t want to show or be the next rodeo queen, there’s a place you can come and learn, have the camaraderie,” she said.

She also explained that while their project has gotten a lot of great corporate sponsorship, a significant portion of the funding has come from private individuals. “The support we’ve gotten from so many members of the community has been tremendous.” Area residents who have questions about the project or would like to donate can reach out to the Harrison County Agricultural Society or the Fair Board.

‘Go change things’: Retiring Harrison Hills board member leaves a legacy

BY REBECCA BRATTEN WEISS Harrison News-Herald Reporting Journalist After a lifetime of service to Harrison County education, Melvin Allen is retiring from his position on the Harrison Hills Board of Education, having achieved his long-time goal of getting a new and better school constructed for the students of Harrison County.

Allen came to the area in 1966 to teach industrial arts at Lakeland High School.

He taught there for 30 years. He was deeply committed to area education during that time, winning distinction as a teacher and even leading the county’s first teachers’ strike over a pay issue in 1970.

Then one day he had an eye-opening conversation with his youngest daughter, who was visiting from college. She told him that the education she had received in Harrison County had been “adequate” but that “the world is moving on, but the education in Harrison County is staying still.” And she told him to “go change things.”

And he certainly did. Allen ran for and was elected to a position on the school board in 1997 and took office in 1998. He served in that capacity for four years. At the time, his perspectives on education were not always popular with other board members. “Money was tight,” Allen said. “It was a touchy subject.”

He didn’t always approve of the things the board was spending money on. “We had school buildings with rusted-out doors and windows covered with cardboard, but they spent money

on football fields!”

In 2002, Allen lost his reelection bid and walked away for eight years. Then in 2009, he ran again and was reelected. Money was still tight, but the students deserved better, updated facilities in Allen’s view. The buildings in the county were old and in poor condition. The school building in Hopedale, for instance, had been built in 1881.

“We can only make a concrete block shine for so long,” Allen told the other board members.

So, in 2015, they started their program for new school buildings. Twice a month, from January 2015 until they moved into the new building in 2019, his team met to discuss plans. “We discussed every square inch, everything that went into the building,” Allen said.

Allen is confident that his legacy will live on well after his retirement, as he’s worked closely with the existing board members. But above all, he is satisfied that he and the others have succeeded in providing Harrison County students with a superlative educational facility.

“I feel I was instrumental in making this building that will last 80 years,” he said. “My objective has been met.”

When asked about what he thought the main focus of local education should be moving forward, Allen stressed that schools shouldn’t just be college preparation. “Not every child should go to college. Some need vocational; some need technical. We need to explore this.”

Nevertheless, Allen believes Harrison Hills “has the best facility and is offering the best education there is in eastern Ohio.”

Huskies start 2022 with a victory HC’s Yourkovich rolls the dice,

BY D.J. WATSON beats Wildcats twice Harrison News-Herald Sports Writer MARTINS FERRY—It wasn’t a pretty game, but if you ask head coach Justin Clifford, he’d likely tell you a win is a win. The Harrison Central boys’ basketball team rang in the new year the right way: picking up a 56-48 hardfought victory on the road against Martins Ferry this past Tuesday night inside Tolbert Gymnasium.

After splitting a pair of games over the holiday break (a setback against St. Clairsville and a win over Barnesville), the Huskies now find themselves with a 6-4 record at the season’s midway point. The return of Jonathan Vermillion just before Christmas and the addition of gridiron standout Tre Rex has added experience and more length to Harrison’s hardwood attack.

Harrison opened up the game on a 7-0 run, but the Purple Riders settled in to cut that lead to just a bucket at 9-7 after the opening eight minutes. Vermillion had a big second quarter, but so did the Purple Rider perimeter players.

Vermillion poured in 9 of his game-high 19 before the half, but Colby Shriver connected on 3 triples, and Jaizen Miles added another. That outside shooting barrage was solid enough to give the home squad a 24-20 advantage at the break. Harrison reversed the court in the third behind another strong outside shooting effort — this time, from Hayden Cassidy. Cassidy warmed up to the tune of 4 trey balls in the eight-minute sprint, putting his Huskies back in front 38-35 at quarter’s end.

The back-and-forth action that filled the first three frames finally broke in one direction late in the fourth. The whistle started to catch up to the Purple Riders, and when the tall presence of Miles headed toward foul trouble, the Huskies took advantage. With the lane opened up, Jace Madzia executed a trio of impressive drives through the lane down the stretch. As a team, the Huskies were 9 of 13 at the charity stripe in the game’s closing minutes. As it so often does in close games, free-throw shooting made the difference at the end.

BY KAY SEDGMER Harrison Central had a decent showing at the America’s Best Value Inn wrestling tournament held at St. Clairsville High School on Dec. 29.

With six varsity wrestlers hitting the mats, the Huskies received 8th place as a team, securing four individual place finishes in 106, 138, 150, and 175 pounds.

Gabe Marbais earned top laurels as the tournament’s 138-pound champion. The Husky senior finished the tournament with a 5-0 record, winning four of his matches with falls and one tech fall at the buzzer.

in 3rd place in the 106-pound weight class.

All three of Sampson’s victories were by fall, finishing the tournament with a 3-2 record.

Sophomore Hunter Bittinger, Harrison Central’s 150-pound wrestler, secured a 3rdplace finish with two falls and one 7-2 decision, making his record for the tournament 3-2.

Junior Mike Smith also scored some points for the Huskies with a 5th-place finish at 175 pounds. Smith was able to earn the fall for all three of his wins, ending the night with a 3-2 record.

Coach Bryant is pleased with the consistent improvement and hopes they continue their efforts into the new year.

BY ED BANKS Harrison News-Herald Sports Writer CADIZ—On Monday, the Harrison Central girls’ varsity and reserve basketball teams dispatched the visiting Lady Wildcats of Edison Local. The evening opened with the junior varsity setting the stage during their contest for an evening that gave the Lady Huskies a complete evening of basketball.

Coach Chace Smith and his squad used the first half of play to get a feel on the Wildcats.

After the tipoff, a preview of the varsity contest unfolded. The junior Huskies were well-prepared for the contest and ran when Edison ran and played heads-up on defense that ultimately wore down the visitors. Their court presence demonstrated what the Huskies are all about. Quarterly scoring played out to a summary of 6-7 (EL) at the end of the first quarter, 18-11(HC) at the half, 22-13 (HC) after the third, and a final of 35-16 in Harrison’s favor.

Harrison’s varsity was also prepared for an up-tempo showing in the evening’s main event. Looking back on the first meeting at Richmond, the Huskies were ready for a repeat and narrowed every avenue that the Wildcats visited to turn them away. As Edison rolled out their game plan, Harrison responded in kind.

In a style rarely seen by the Huskies, the team was on cue for every offensive posture and, likewise, owned the boards and the positioning on defense. CADIZ—On Monday evening, the Harrison Central bowling teams were in action with Beaver Local at the Tri-State Lanes.

In the boys’ match, Beaver Local out-rolled Harrison 2,234 to 1,871. In that match, the individual high scorers for Harrison were Drew Culbertson with 198, Kobie Hennis with 178, and Corey Hayes with 147 and 144.

In the girls’ match, Beaver scored 1,505, and the Huskies finished with 1,494. The high scorers

in the matchup were Aleyna Runevitch at 161, Grace Cain with 154, Cameron Aughinbaugh at 111, and Erica Emhoff with 103.

“Unfortunately, we had two starters unable to attend the match due to appointments,” said coach Bobbi Parkinson. “However, the two girls I threw into the mix did a fine job, and I’m very proud of them for stepping up with a short notice. We will have a match that features the varsity boys only coming up at J R Lanes, where they will face River. That match may also see the junior varsity bowlers roll for averages,” Parkinson added.

The first quarter laid the groundwork for an evening of “we own the night” by Harrison.

The quarter ended with the Huskies up by 9 points and a score of 14-5. Moving to the second quarter, the team was ready, conditioned, and fluent as Yourkovich rolled the dice. Harrison earned 11 more points in the second quarter while Edison earned 8. The frame closed by a count of 25-13. Then the third period showed the Huskies up by 8 points and a score of 34-26, but the story of the fourth period outtrumped the first three. The Huskies scored 15 more points to leave the court with a 49-34 final.

Dunkle was once again unstoppable under the net. Her efforts earned the Huskies 31 points. McKenzie Harbold added 6 points to the team’s total and had a bonus field goal and 3 digits from the charity stripe. Maddy Butler had 4 points on the evening, with 2 of the points coming from a monster rebound that she returned high over the crowed paint area.

Angi Ferri’s offensive contribution was a second team 3-ball. Ferri played hard all evening and matched efforts with a running Wildcat team that kept the opponents in check on attempted breakaways. Emma Fisher was Emma Fischer: While partnering with Ferri and Butler, she shared the transition run duties while adding 3 points to the team total.

OBITUARIES

Donald Carson Donald Eugene Carson, 88, a lifelong resident of New Athens, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2022 at the Harrison Community Hospital.

He retired in 1994 from Consol Coal Surface Mining operations as a head driller. Over the years, he was an avid hunter, motorcycle enthusiast, bowler, and jokester. He was also a member of the House of the Shepherd in New Athens.

He was born March 27, 1933 to Denzil and Celesta (Culbertson) Carson. He married Martha (Marty) Strawder on July 14, 1957 and had four children: Terre (Russell) Carson-Jones of Front Royal, Virginia, Dawn Carson of New Athens, Kip (Heidi) Carson of New Athens, and Chris (Darla) Carson of Springfield, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 30 years, Marty; three children: Bonnie, Diana, and Randy; his loving companion of 31 years, Betty Luyster; and his sister, Louanna Carson Richards.

Earcel Best Earcel Owen Best, 81, of Cadiz, Ohio passed away at home on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2021, surrounded by his family. He was the son of the late Earcel and Laura Thompson Best of

Hopedale, Ohio.

He was a coal miner and a farmer. He enjoyed fishing in his free time. Earcel will be missed by all that “truly” knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sandra (Howell) Best of Cadiz; his children: Laina Best of Cadiz, Trent Best of Bowerston, Dawn (David) Watt of Cadiz and Tod (Tennille) Best of Cadiz; nine grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Emma Rayne Pulley was born into the arms of the angels on Sunday, January 2, 2022 at 8:45 p.m. in the Union Hospital in Dover, Ohio.

She was the daughter of Lucas Glenn Pulley and Sarah Elizabeth Cost Pulley of 81788 Lovers Lane in Tippecanoe, Ohio.

In addition to her parents, she leaves two sisters: Cora Elizabeth Pulley and Arlie Mae Pulley; paternal grandparents, Chuck and Deanna (White) Pulley of Dennison; maternal grandmother and grandfather, Misty (Regula) and Dean Green of Zanesville; James (Daun) Cost of Strasburg; and several aunts and uncles.

Dear Ann, I have been very sick through the holiday season and missed out on a lot of celebrating.

I’d like to make some New Year’s resolutions, but by the time I fully recover, I will feel silly starting them halfway through January. Is this a worthy tradition I should continue?

I appreciate your optimism and will to celebrate the new year, even if the celebration must be delayed. How important it is to pause to appreciate new beginnings! What better way to acknowledge that than beginning new habits as you regain your health. The point of resolutions is to keep going, create order in your life, and not give up if you make a mistake. The important thing is that you keep trying after you fail — because you will fail.

Paul Lunemann Paul Francis Lunemann, 64, a resident of the Scio, Ohio area since 2010, having previously resided in

Oak Park, Michigan, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022 at the Sunnyslope Nursing Home in Bowerston, Ohio. Born July 6, 1957 in Parkersburg, West Virginia, he was a son of Albert Carl Lunemann with whom he had resided and the late Rosemary Agnes (Yeater) Lunemann.

In addition to his father, Paul is survived by his siblings, Mary Beth (Jon) Traines, Anna Lunemann, Jim (Bonnie) Lunemann, and Vince Lunemann; nephews and nieces, Jacob (Chiara), David (Olivia), Seth (Becca), Catrina, Christina, Michael, Gregory (Kaitlyn), Katie, Emily (Xavier), and Elizabeth (Konnor); and great-nephews and great-nieces, Aubrey, Travis, Nova, Marissa, Kaelee, Michael Jr., and Isaiah.

Paul was an usher for many years at St. Beatrice Catholic Church in Southfield, Michigan, and was currently a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Dennison. He enjoyed collecting recipes and miniature toys, and he loved researching those interests on the internet.

According to Paul’s wishes, cremation is planned, and a celebration of his life will be held on a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation and Community Hospice.

LOOK AT THE PAST Clark Gable and Jennie Dunlap Gable

William Gable and Jennie Dunlap (Hopedale, Ohio) were married on April 16, 1903. Clark always addressed Jennie as “mother.” His Hopedale friends did not know that she was, in fact, his stepmother until they learned of it through the publicity surrounding his rise to stardom. Clark’s mother, Adeline Hershelman Gable, passed away on Nov. 14, 1901, when Clark was nine months old.

She is buried in the Chestnut Corners Graveyard in Crawford County, Pennsylvania.

(William) Clark Gable was born in Cadiz, Ohio on Feb. 1, 1901.

Preface (from Charles B. Wallace’s book “The Young Mr. Gable”): Clark Gable once said his epitaph should read, “He was lucky, and he knew it.”

Gable wasn’t joking when he said that. He knew what he had been — a small-town boy from Ohio with only a few advantages. And he knew what he had become — the world’s most admired and famous motion picture actor.

Only luck, as he saw it, could account for the difference. “There’s no special light that shines inside me and makes me a star,” said Gable shortly before his death in 1960, “I’m just a lucky slob from Ohio. Good NEWS Defeating Worry

Covid Round 1, Omicron Round 2, exploding meteors to our east, personal finances, inflation, and troubled relationships: Hey, what’s to worry about? Plenty — and if we’re not on our guard, it will eat us up. Jesus had a lot to say about worry, and what he said was this: “Don’t do it!” In the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 6, Jesus said, “Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing? Your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things?”

In other words, Jesus was saying, “I’ve got your back, chill.” That’s the pastor Ken version — not quite as eloquent as the King James version, but you get the gist.

A wise person once said, “Worry is making a payment on a bill that you haven’t received and may not ever get.” So why do so many

of us sit down and write that check? Some of us try to become wordsmiths and say, “Well, I’m not really worrying; I’m just very concerned.” Here’s the difference between worry and concern: worry paralyzes, concern mobilizes. That’s the litmus test of how we are in handling the situation. Are we being proactive and taking steps to resolve the problem or are we mentally rehearsing every bad thing that could happen? Paralyzed or mobilized: The choice is ours.

“Can any of you add one moment to his life by worrying?”, Jesus asked. The answer, of course, is no. Scripture speaks of several times where Jesus was amazed at people’s faith. When his hometown of Nazareth rejected him, Jesus was amazed at their unbelief. A Roman centurion sent messengers to Jesus saying, “That’s OK, Lord. You don’t need to come to my house.

I know you have the authority to heal no matter where you are.” Jesus was amazed at his great faith. As believers, we have the ability to amaze Jesus with our unbelief or with our great faith — and great faith never worries. Finally, in Matthew 6:34, Jesus says, “Don’t worry about tomorrow because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Planning for tomorrow is OK; worrying about tomorrow is not. Worry keeps us from the very things God wants us to deal with in life. How will you and I amaze Jesus today?

Helen Carlisle, 92, wife of Joe Carliste, former superintendent at Conotton Valley Schools, died this past week in Westerville — sympathy to the family.

A fine crowd attended the concert by the Chrisagis Brothers at the First Church on Sunday. Thanks to all who shared their talents.

Holy Communion will be served at Trinity U.M. Church on Sunday, Jan. 9.

During the holidays, the Conotton Valley boys’ basketball team won both games at the Kolivoda Showcase at Toronto High. They beat Bridgeport 51-30 and Southern Local 59-39.

Gaige Galigher was chosen as MVP for both games. The girls lost to Strasburg 55-18.

DEERSVILLE

Thank you to the Feed Spring Church for having a game night on Dec. 31 at 6:30 p.m. at the Feed Spring schoolhouse adjacent to the church. Thank you to those who came.

On Jan. 10 at 10 a.m., the Woody-Paul Blanket Mission will meet in the Deersville UM Church fellowship hall. Anyone who can tie a knot is welcome to come. A covered dish lunch will follow.

Also on Jan. 10 will be the monthly business meetings of the Deersville UM Church. The PPR will meet at 6 p.m. The trustees will meet at 7 p.m. and will be followed by the administrative council.

Everyone on these committees is encouraged to attend. Any congregation member that wants to sit in on the trustee and administrative council is welcome to come. Thank you to those who serve to take care of the church’s business so that the church is a good steward of the gifts God has given to them to manage.

There will be T-shirts for sale, a lottery, silent auction, 50-50 drawing, and a chicken dinner for $10. Please come out to support Joe and, in the process, enjoy a delicious chicken dinner and visit with family and friends.

Another “Old Timer” has left us. The community extends sympathy to the family of David Shatzer, who passed away on Dec. 29 in Mansfield, Ohio. David was a 1958 graduate of Holloway High School. His parents were Charles and Hildred Shatzer. David is survived by his wife Sharon, his children, and grandchildren.

I hope everybody had a really great Christmas.

I sure did! I enjoyed my Christmas break from school, and it’s time to start thinking about the New Year. We have a couple of traditions in my family, like eating pork and sauerkraut on New Year’s Eve, which got me thinking about what other people do, so I did a little research on it.

Some people eat black-eyed peas and collard greens. Other people drink champagne in a toast at midnight or think happy thoughts and avoid crying. Some people let off fireworks at midnight, while others kiss to see the New Year in. Some people believe that putting shiny, brand new pennies face up in the corners and windows of your home will bring financial prosperity in the year to follow, while other people like to take

out cash and stuff their wallets full of money on New Year’s Eve. It is thought that doing so ensures that they will not go broke during the upcoming year. Believers in this superstition advise keeping your wallet filled with cash until at least Jan. 2, so be mindful of your spending on New Year’s Eve! I never heard of those two.

Many others make New Year’s Resolutions or sing Auld Lang Syne. How about in your house?

I hope everyone had a joyous holiday. Christmas is over, and the New Year 2022 is here. My wish for everyone far and near is to have a great year and be healthy.

Jean Yoss spent Christmas with her family in Columbus. Family and friends also gathered at brother Robert Johnson in Perry, Ohio. There was great food and fellowship, and it’s always great for families to get together. The weather was great — this weather is unbelievable. But we’ll keep it. Jean Yoss took Keenan and me to look at Christmas lights and eat at Pizza Hut — very enjoyable.

The senior citizens of Cadiz got 1st prize for the Christmas decorations on their windows. They were very nice, and they did a great job.

As I write this article with a heavy heart, my baby brother Robert Bob Johnson of Perry, Ohio passed away. He was surrounded by his loving family. He will be missed and loved very much. R.I.P Bob. Funeral services will be Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022.

SMITHFIELD

I don’t see anything different about the new year

except a feeling of hope and prayers that the months ahead will lower the rash of COVID-19 that is coming back. Here is a wish that people will realize that masks are an important part of staying well and lowering the numbers of those affected. Enough about what has happened, and I would like to see a decline.

Some good things that happened in Smithfield include the addition of a “Little Library” situated by the Smithfield Friends Church. When the weather gets nasty, curling up with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate is a perfect pastime.

The Friends of Smithfield were the instigators of the library kiosk where one can take a book home to read and then bring it back. They might even bring along a book or two they have read several times and practically know by heart. I am like that with James Patterson’s books about the Murder Mystery gals who nearly get taken off this earth but come through saving the day.

I have read Robin Yocum’s murder mystery books about three times over, and I always catch something I missed before. Robin is a noted author raised in Brilliant by his parents, who had a service station in the town. He played an excellent game of football for the Buckeye North Panthers and went on to Bowling Green.

He has written about six (don’t quote me on that) books, and each one is as good as the first.

The author mentions things like Naples Spaghetti House in Steubenville, County Road 19 in New Alexandria, and many other places where you take a second and think to yourself, “I know about those places.” I have to see what his newest book is as I was so busy reading my entire library of books that I didn’t keep up on his last one.

Cotton Mosser passed away this past week, and knowing his mother and of him, I sent a donation to the Rush Run Chapel, where he was a member. The Mosser family sent a note of thanks saying that it was “very kind.” Don’t you like to get a card when going through a serious illness or a death in the family?

We of the Smithfield Friends Church are quite pleased to have acquired the Reverend Craig Smith as our pastor. We appreciate the help his wife, Debbie, has made. One way has been by making a neat bulletin announcing the ill, deaths, and other news.

Tom Toth, my nephew, made the most wonderful caramels for Christmas. You really can’t eat just one. He and brother Andy, who lives in Cadiz, go to lots of work making the tasty holiday treats.

HC wrestlers honored for Senior Night

BY KAY SEDGMER Harrison Central’s Justin Sampson (pictured) capped off senior night Wednesday evening during a tri-meet with a 2:38 fall against Martins Ferry’s Jase Mahoney. The Huskies’ senior and teammate Gabe Marbais were honored prior to the match. During the tri-meet, which the Huskies hosted, team results included Martins Ferry at 34 and Harrison Central with 29; Indian Creek ended with 47 and Harrison

Central at 34. The teams will all be in action again for the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Tournament in Wheeling this weekend.

Normally, when present on game nights, the Select Choir opens the evening with an a cappella rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” while under the direction of Angela Zalenski.

During timeouts and halftime, the Pep Band usually performs music that they practice for an event as selected by assistant band director Eric Zalenski.

As for the new year, the Chamber of Commerce has some plans in motion, some new and some continuations of older ones.

The Chamber of Commerce is already doing its “coffee connections” socials. Members of the Chamber and other local business leaders meet at 8:30 a.m. at Ranch to Table to socialize and discuss local happenings. The coffee connects are every third Thursday of the month.

And during the evenings of every third Thursday, the Chamber congregates for its meeting proper at the Ohio Valley Winery on East Market Street at 5:30 p.m.

The chamber has been talking about adding more evening events, though. “We’re making plans to have another after-hour connections sometime in March, possibly February,” Baker explained.

Baker also commented on a forum taking place later in 2022: “In April, plans are in motion for a legislative forum, which will have state and local representatives come in and share at a banquet dinner and take on questions of what’s going on in the statehouse and what’s going on in the capital.” While this won’t be the first legislative forum, it’s been a couple of years since the last; the Chamber is looking forward to bringing it back, however. “We’re excited, I think, about the legislative forum. That went very well. We had that two years ago,” Klingler commented.

As Baker began concluding, he expressed his appreciation and gratitude for having a physical office and “central location,” especially one located on Cadiz’s Main Street. “We are open Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 9 to 12,” he declared.

The Chamber of Commerce will be using a dedicated cell phone line for their business and can be reached at 740-491-4096 or by email at harrisonregionalchamber@outlook.com.

Additionally, the Chamber is accepting applications for membership for 2022, both for individuals and businesses. Currently, the Chamber of commerce boasts members from five different Ohio Valley counties: Harrison, Belmont, Guernsey, Jefferson, and Tuscarawas.

They even have one individual member based in Columbus.

Silver Spade ambulance services starting in Jewett in 2022

The confusion arose from the wording in the 2021 levy, which was passed by Jewett voters.

As the second half of the season winds down, rooting interest for Harrison fans should certainly be on the side of watching the Huskies play in the Ohio Valley’s marquee basketball event on their own floor.

The issue emerged because the language in the levy stated that the funds for the 2022 ambulance services would be “first collected in 2023.” It was worded this way because the deadline for Silver Spade to certify its district is Oct. 1. But on Oct. 1, 2021, Jewett residents had not yet voted to support the levy, so Jewett will have to be certified as part of the district in October of this year.

To make services available for 2022, as per the

residents’ vote, it was decided that Silver Spade will collect the tax themselves. The council will then pass a resolution to take the levy off. This does mean that two Jewett council members will also have to be board members for the Silver Spade.

The contract sent to village attorney Jenna Hokes originally contained a dollar amount, but this will be revised, removing that dollar amount and will permit Silver Spade to levy a tax to fund the ambulance services to the village.

If the lifestyle of the person that is to become the elder does not fully conform to these requirements, he must change his lifestyle to conform thereto. That person will then experience divine healing. Although the Lord will sometimes allow that elder to experience some form of sickness (for God’s glory) in general, the elder’s health is now in the Lord’s hands.

3) As an elder, the two of you can now practice the healing process described in James, 5:14-15.

The ICPM has practiced this procedure for many years, and we have experienced many miraculous healings by our Lord’s hands. You will not find a more sure healing procedure anywhere! The ICPM has kept meticulous records on the results of this procedure over many years. Its records show that the sick person was healed over 90% of the time. Remember: Spiritual Healing (eternal life) can be yours if you – by faith – “call upon the Lord Jesus Christ”.

Library moves to curbside service

Due to staffing, the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County will begin curbside service on Thursday, Jan. 6 until further notice.

Library director Mike Gray said there had been an increase in the number of illnesses with staff. “As a safety measure, the library is temporarily closing its walk-in service and offering curbside service.”

Jewett pitches ‘Community Beautification’ committee

The Jewett village council may see the formation of at least one new committee in 2022. Village residents have asked whether it would be possible to have flower pots and plantings along the street for aesthetic purposes. Since there is no longer a garden club active in the village, it rests with the council to take on this new initiative.

The council tossed about

different names for a possible new committee, with “community beautification” a popular option.

Residents have also requested that the village organize a “Community Days” event comparable with other villages.

“People want something to do with their kids,” one council member shared. They discussed the prospect of arranging music, or possibly a barbecue, for such an event.
