There was one opening on the roster of 42 firefighters for the village. The resignation of Brennan Thomas was accepted last night. In his resignation letter, he said he found his services were needed elsewhere. Although Margaret Mesler has served for many years for the fire department in a secretarial capacity, Sauerwine will be the first active female firefighter for the village, according to Thomas.

Council learns vacating alley is still an issue By NANCY SCHAAR FPS Correspondent Once again residents from an alley behind Fifth Street questioned council regarding their decision to vacate the alley. Kelli Sandefur addressed council and asked why they voted to vacate. Council woman Brittany Tangler said she voted in favor of it because all the other property owners face the alley but Sandefur’s did not. Sandefur stated there were seven other garages that don’t face the alley. Sandefur also said that she was told they wanted to close it because it was too narrow and only 182 inches wide. But she had found one alley in the village that was 135 inches, and one that was 174 inches wide and did not believe that was the issue. The problem arose months ago and was originally questioned because of people turning from the drive-through onto the undeveloped alley which ends in a dead end. The drivers then were not sure how to get out of the alley without backing into someone’s yard. Complaints have been made against

both sides of the issue, citing the alley had always been closed, that a shed was moved into the alley way, that a garage was built across the line, that flower beds and railroad ties are not on private property but are on the alley. Resident David Crim told council Monday night that he and Junior Miller had gathered signatures on petitions to have the alley formally closed in the 1970’s. Council received the petitions but according to Village Administrator Mark Wells, they did not pass an ordinance or take any action regarding the petition. Kristen Bartlow also addressed council and said she felt there is a legal standpoint that was not met. She said that council must utilize due process and that they were taking away property owners rights without showing a valid reason and said the dispute was actually over landscaping and inconvenience. Wells said he would explore council minutes from the 1970’s and report back to council. The ordinance to vacate the alley will have its third and final reading of the ordinance officially vacating the alley. That meeting will be held Monday, June 24 at 7 p.m. in village hall.

In other business council: - LEARNED that Constellation NewEnergy has bought out the village’s aggregation contract with Capital Energy. The plan will remain the same under the new company. - GAVE third and final reading to an ordinance for an easement with the Carroll County Veteran’s Club Memorial Fund. - HIRED Brandon Smith for the labor position with the Street Department. He begins duties June 24 and will receive $13 per hour. - ACCEPTED a small parcel of land in the village owned by county commissioners. - HEARD complaints from residents who do not want to receive the Mr. Thrifty publication in a blue bag in their driveways, yards, porches, or bushes. Wells had given a phone number for residents to call to cancel and tell Mr. Thrifty that they do not want any more deliveries. Residents said they were told they did not have a subscription and were not receiving the publication even though residents reported they were. Residents were advised to call Denise Milhoan at 330-364-8319.
