Band with local roots is honored by Las Vegas

By DON RUTLEDGE FPS Staff Writer Anyone remember the music of the Smith Brothers back in the late 60s and early 70s?

Well the current Smith Brothers band is still performing and was recently recognized by the mayor of Las Vegas for their years of performing in that city.

Greg Smith, one of the current members, explained Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman wanted to recognize the band for the many years that we’ve been performing here and the contri-

butions we’ve made to the city.

“So, she proclaimed Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019, as Smith Brothers Band Day in Las Vegas. When I informed her that day was the 90th birthday of our Mother Bea, she wanted to honor her as well. Needless to say we had a great celebration that weekend,” he added.

Members of the current Smith Brothers band include Greg, guitar and lead vocals; Rami, drums and vocals; Shawn, bass and vocals, and Rick Daugherty on keyboards for over 25 years with the band.

Past members include Donnie Castleman (bass player with Terry Fator) Eddie DiMarino (bass player with the

Righteous Brothers), Dixie Dawkins (sax player with Howard Hewitt), Sari Lopez and Stacy Juilerat on vocals.

When you look into her dark brown eyes, their gentleness makes you melt.

Despite spending a few hours on airplanes, she was not skittish or nervous.

Carrollton Police Reports Dec. 3 – Police were called to a nursing facility on Longhorn Street after a female pulled the fire alarm in the lobby. The same woman pulled the alarm on Dec. 4. Police viewed security film and found the woman repeatedly rang the bell trying to gain access to the locked building. Following further investigation, the woman had been observed at Speedway getting a large cup of coffee on security footage. Police were able to identify the woman, who was homeless, and living in a nearby shed. She was taken to the hospital for a mental evaluation but was taken back to jail on the order of the hospital because there were no beds available. She was charged with two counts of inducing panic and two counts of making false alarms. All charges are misdemeanors.

Dec. 5 – A Carrollton man was charged with domestic vi-

olence after an incident in the home where he reportedly hit his wife in the back with a door numerous times, trapped her in a room and would not let her leave, and pulled her hair. The man has one conviction for domestic violence and a second charge is pending from an incident in August.

Dec. 7 – Police responded to a call from a Third Street residence where the man left for the night after a verbal argument with his girlfriend.

Crash Reports Nov. 28 - A Jewett woman hit a car in the rear end driven by a 2nd Street, Carrollton, woman at West Main Street and Canton Road.

Nov. 30 – A Scroll Road woman hit the side of a car driven by a Gallo Road, Carrollton, woman at Main Street and Canton Road. The driver said she did not see the other vehicle.

‘Miracle on 34th Street’ to be shown Saturday The Minerva Area Chamber of Commerce’s Roxy Theatre will show “Miracle on 34th Street,” rated PG, on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m.

In this classic Christmas movie, a lawyer and a little girl must prove that a man claiming to be Santa Claus is the real thing.

The 1994 remake stars Richard Attenborough, Elizabeth Perkins, and Dylan McDermott.

Admission is $3 per person, and doors will open at 6:15 p.m. The Roxy Theater is located at 120 N. Market St. in Minerva’s historic downtown.

The Roxy will also offer a Christmas double feature, sponsored by Loudon Motors Ford, on Saturday, Dec. 21,

showing “Jingle All the Way” at 4 p.m. and “Home Alone 2” at 7 p.m. Admission is $3 or $5 for both shows and will benefit the Minerva Elementary Backpack Program.

Admission will be free with a donation of one of the following food items: Ramen noodles, chicken noodle soup, Chef Boyardee, fruit snacks, chips, cereal bars, and individually wrapped cookies.

Other movies scheduled at the Roxy are: Jan. 11, “Hidden Figures”; and Feb. 8, “Romancing the Stone.”

Appeals court affirms judgement on oil, gas leases The Seventh District Court of Appeals has affirmed the judgment of the Carroll County Common Pleas Court regarding an appeal filed by John Fiocca of Cuyahoga Falls.

The appeal was filed by Fiocca Feb. 25, 2019, from a Carroll County Commons Pleas Court judgment of Feb. 6, 2019, granting summary judgment in favor of the defendants – AIM Energy LLC , c/o Statutory Agent John W. Miller of North Canton, and Steven Nicholson of 96 Herbert Rd. NW, Sherrodsville, on Fiocca’s action seeking a declaratory judgment that certain oil and gas leases be cancelled due to the lack of production in paying quantities.

The case involves two oil and gas leases encumbering 126 acres of property in Orange Twp. in which Fiocca is the

surface landowner and owns a one-third interest in the mineral rights.

Defendant Cravat Coal owns the other two-thirds interest in the mineral rights.

In his appeal, Fiocca raised two assignments of error, including the summery judgment and that the trial court erred in finding that common metering satisfied production in paying quantities for all the wells.

However, the Appeals Court noted the trial court determined that all four wells were producing in paying quantities, although it could not determine the actual production rates for each individual well.

The trial court also found that Fiocca presented no evidence to demonstrate that a specific well was not producing, the appeals court noted.

One of the first public performances by the Smith Brothers band was in June 1972 when Greg and Rami furnished music for a Carroll County Chamber of Commerce dinner at the Atwood Yacht Club featuring Mrs. Woody Hayes as the guest speaker. The two Smith brothers performance that night preceded a four-month tour with pre-scheduled engagements in New York, Nevada and Florida.

In December of 1975, the two young brothers from Ohio (Carrollton) came to Las Vegas for a two-week engagement to perform at the Flamingo Lounge.

Greg and Rami Smith, known as the Smith Brothers, were

ready to fulfill their dream of appearing in Las Vegas after an extensive tour of the country’s top nightclubs, including Playboy Clubs. Their act went over so well that the Flamingo kept them for two years. They never dreamed that they would still be performing in Vegas 40 years later.

They shared the stage with so many great performers, including Keeley Smith, Sam Butera, Sonny King, Cookie Jarr, Santa Fe, Earl Turner, the Checkmates, the Imperials and Gary Puckett – just to mention a few.

Since then they have appeared and performed at over 35 casinos, singing six and seven nights a week, six shows a night and sometimes doing two lounges

in a day.

Many Carrollton area residents might remember the Smiths – Clark, who died Feb. 4, 2018, at the age of 89, and Bea, who lived in Carroll Heights Allotment in Carrollton while Clark worked at Huebner Chevrolet.

In addition to Greg and Rami, their sons included Eric, who is a doctor of psychology specializing in forensics; Kevin, who has his own real estate company, and the other two brothers, Shawn and Todd who work in the casino industry.

to take Sadie and her puppies home. Jones will foster the dogs, making sure they get their necessary shots and that Sadie is spayed.

“When I knew I was getting Sadie, I hurried up and got the basement ready,” she said, who has fostered dogs for Kaleidoscope K9s before. Her friend notes that she got her rescue dog through Kaleidoscope K9s.

“We make sure all their medical needs are taken care of and then we look for homes for them,” Jones explained.

Jones, like all the dog foster parents, is a volunteer. Kaleidoscope K9s’ Facebook page states, “We are all volunteers who do the best that we can with the limited funds and resources available to us. We give the potential adopter as much information as we can, including copies of all vet records but we normally do not know the history of the dogs, as they are strays at the pound.”

It also notes there are four things people can do: Foster a dog; donate items, such as blankets, towels, food, collars, leashes, toys, dog beds, sheets, treats and more; donate time to walk, feed, transport or help at adoption events; and educate people on the option of adoption.

Commissioners learn about reimbursement funds

By NANCY SCHAAR FPS Correspondent Carroll County Commissioners learned Monday that the state indigent defense fund will reimburse counties 70% of their expenses beginning in 2020.

Commissioner Bob Wirkner said that he was pleased to hear this because some years there was no funding available and some years it was 25% reimbursable funds. This will be very helpful to the county.

Commissioner Lewis Mickley reported that Airport Authority member Karen Carlisle dropped in to discuss further information about the Airport Zoning Board.

When questioned, Mickley said he had retrieved information from four counties similar in size to Carroll County and Carlisle will review the information.

In other business commissioners: - AGREED to hire Robyn Sutton as a full time driver for the county transit system. She will

begin immediately and her rate of pay is $9.50. Eleven applications were received.

- FILED the November report for the Golden Age Retreat with 10 males and 34 females in residence.

- ISSUED a Road Use Maintenance Agreement with EAP Ohio, LLC for a portion of Brush Road in Augusta Township.

- RECEIVED the dog pound report with three impounded, five adopted out, none redeemed, zero destroyed and one citation issued for no license.

Carrollton Council holds brief session

By NANCY SCHAAR FPS Correspondent Carrollton Council met for about eight minutes Monday night, Dec. 9.

A light agenda included approval of a resolution authorizing appropriations through the end of the year.

Mayor William Stoneman advised that a part-time police officer resigned because he was getting more hours at Navarre.

Village Administrator Mark Wells updated council on the State Route 9 sewer project. He said the walk through should be conducted next week and the project completed within a few days after that.

Council agreed to hold the second meeting of the month on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 6 p.m.

The holiday season is fast approaching. Normally, I do not like the winter months. If it is below 70 degrees, I am cold!

The snow adds considerable stress to our bus drivers and support staff. However, the big plus to winter is the Christmas season.

It seems that everyone becomes a little more aware of those around them that are less fortunate. You hear the familiar bell of the Salvation Army volunteers as you walk into the stores. You see people holding the door for one another, or letting someone go before them in line. People are greeting each other and there are definitely more smiles.

With all the hatred and political divisiveness that this country is currently exhibiting, winter and the holiday season could not come quick enough, in my opinion.

Luckily, I have the best job in the world! In the field of education, I have the opportunity to interact with all the sweet, innocent, energetic, caring and giving kiddos on a daily basis.

The big thing that these kids give you on a daily basis is HOPE. You see, hatred is not an inherited trait. It is learned.

The children look at one another truly as equals. Gender, race, religion, and socioeconomics do not impact the little kids.

All they know is that they have a bunch of new friends in their Kindergarten class. So, I am going to take a page out of their book and HOPE that this Christmas Season people will be kind to one another and put others before themselves.

The kids at CV are doing just that. Our students are collecting donations for Share-A-Christmas and are also adopting several local families, in addition.

It is so awesome to see the kids so excited to help others.

Also this week, we are holding our annual Christmas concerts.

A bench warrant has been issued by Carroll County Probate and Juvenile Court Judge John S. Campbell for the arrest

of Tyler West of 2585 Cathy Dr. NE, Canton, for failure to make payment or report to jail for support contempt.

Auditor’s Office warns about using ‘statewide’ dog licence site Carroll County Auditor’s Office is warning residents there are fraudulent websites reportedly selling Ohio dog licenses.

The fraudulent websites claim to be for the whole state. A number of the details of the license requirements are wrong and it does not link to any county, which are how licenses are sold.

Fairfield Computers, Carroll County’s online dog license service, found two sites that are doing this: ohiodoglicense.com and ohdog-license.com.

Residents are encouraged to report the sites to https://www. mrdomain.com/abuse/ in an effort to have the sites taken down. Dog owners are encouraged to use www.doglicenses. us/OH/Carroll to purchase their dog licenses online.

Courthouse offices begin WTCC Menus decorating for door contest

Warren Township Community Center has announced its lunch menus for Mondays in December.

The lunches are held 11 a.m.1 p.m. at the center, 3986 New Cumberland Rd NE, Mineral City. The cost is by donation.

All lunches come with a drink, side dishes and dessert.

The schedule is as follows: Dec. 16: “Our Christmas Dinner” - Ham and cheesy potatoes, California blend vegetables, rolls and butter.

Dec. 23 and 30: Closed.

Orders are still being accepted for whole pies at a cost of $8.

The Carroll County Courthouse offices are having a door decorating contest this year for Christmas.

They are not all completed yet, but they won’t be judged until after Dec. 12.

The Court of Common Pleas employees had to make some adjustments on Monday. They had stuffed the little green belly of the Grinch that was to be placed on the door to their office, but he kept falling off.

It was determined he was too heavy for the tape being used.

So employees had to remove some of the stuffing from his little green belly and reduce

the waistline for the Grinch.

Let’s hope he stays on the door until Christmas! At least Santa did not have to lose weight in a hurry.

Dorothy ‘Dot’ Horrigan

Dorothy “Dot” Horrigan, 82, of Carrollton, passed away early Thursday morning, Dec. 5, 2019, at Park Village Healthcare Center in New Philadelphia.

A daughter of the late William “Bill” and Helen Baker Shepherd, she was born Oct. 9, 1937 in Carrollton, OH. Dot was a graduate of Carrollton High School and went on to work as the administrative secretary to the Superintendent Larry Pontuti for 34 years in Carrollton Exempted Village School District. In 2015 she was inducted into the Carrollton Alumni Hall of Fame in the area of community service.

The first woman to serve on the Village Council for Carrollton, Dot was also an active member of Carrollton First United Methodist Church and enjoyed singing in the choir. She could be seen most mornings walking her beloved dog, Curley, around town as they made their daily stops to visit.

She is survived by a brother, Bill (Mary) Shepherd Jr. of Cedar Falls, IA; a sister, Betty Walters of Lexington, KY; four nieces, Ann (Paul) Baransy, Jeani (Max) Good, Nola (Jim) Quealy and Kathleen (Clay) Robinson; and a nephew, William (Kimberly) Shepherd IV. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick Horrigan, in 2015.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 9, 2019 at 12 p.m. in Dodds Funeral Home of Carrollton with Rev. Dan Loomis and Rev. Kimberly Arbaugh officiating. Burial followed in Westview Cemetery in Carrollton. Visitation was Monday from 10 a.m. until time of services in the funeral home.

Glenn Tope Butterfield, 86, of Scio, went to be with his Lord and Saviour Dec. 8, 2019 at Sunnyslope Care Center, surrounded by his caring and devoted family. He was a loving husband and wonderful father.

Glenn was born April 14, 1933 in Perry Twp., Carroll County, the oldest of four children of the late Frank R. and Mildred (Tope) Butterfield.

He graduated from Perrysville High School in 1951 and then honorably served his country by serving in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955, stationed at Fort Sill, OK. He graduated from Andrews Barber College in Columbus, OH in 1957. He barbered for 58 years, 56 of which he owned and operated Glenn’s Barber and Styling in Scio, retiring in 2015. He and his wife, Lois, owned Butterfield Insurance Agency for 48 years.

He was a devoted member of The Scio United Methodist Church, serving as usher for many years. He also was a member of the Scio American Legion Post #482, Dining Fork Ruritan and Scio Masonic Lodge. He was a former member of the Scio Volunteer Fire Department, Scio Civic Club and K of P Lodge.

Glenn was an antique car enthusiast, having owned several cars over the years. He attended the Hershey Antique Car show and was a charter member of the Carlisle Antique Car Club. He also collected toys, scooters, and “other stuff.”

He is survived by his wife, Lois (Green), whom he married Sept.

7, 1958; two daughters, Sharon (Ronald “Butch”) Johnson of New Philadelphia, and Lisa (Jeff) Moran of Hilliard. He is also survived by his brother, Parke (Betty) Butterfield of Carrollton; his sister, Kathleen (James) Armstrong of Canton; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Carl, and sister-in-law, Rita Butterfield.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to all the wonderful caregivers at Sunnyslope Care Center and Crossroads Hospice.

A funeral service with full military honors celebrating Glenn’s life will be held Thursday, Dec. 12 at 11 a.m. at The Scio United Methodist Church with Pastors Deborah Kellar, Jeff Moran and Jonathan Butera officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Dec. 11 from 5-8 p.m. at Koch Funeral Home in Scio and Thursday, Dec. 12 from 10-11 a.m. at The Scio United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Perrysville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Glenn’s memory to the Scio United Methodist Church, 117 Maple St., Scio, OH 43988 and Scio American Legion Post #482, 38175 Crimm Rd., Scio, OH 43988.

Raymond K. Ray Raymond K. Ray, 77, of Canton, passed away Monday morning Dec. 9, 2019 at the Ridgewood Hospice Center in Akron.

A son of the late William Archie and Leona Blazer Ray, he was born Jan. 13, 1942 in Carrollton, Ohio.

Raymond was a United States Air Force veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Josefina Ray; a brother, James Ray; three sisters, Norma Rutledge, Lois Kirby, Ruth Ann Tinlin and many nieces and nephews.

Along with is parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Dec. 12, 2019 at 11 a.m. in Dodds Funeral Home of Carrollton. Burial will follow in Harlem Springs Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of services in the funeral home.

Dorothy J. (Baker) Peterson Dorothy J. (Baker) Peterson, formerly of Carrollton, went home to be with her Lord after a period of failing health at Stone Creek (Danbury) Assisted Living in Alliance, OH, Monday, Dec. 9, 2019, where she had resided since Feb. 11, 2017.

She was born in Mingo Junction, OH, Nov. 28, 1932, a daughter of the late Orid R. and Goldie (Wilson) Baker.

Dorothy was married Jan. 16, 1953 to Marion B. Peterson, Jr., who survives her.

She is also survived by her daughter, Saundra K. (Dale) Chryst of Alliance; her son, Alan L. (Cindy) Peterson of Carrollton; her sister, Joyce Burris of Berea, KY; sister-in-law and dear friend, Shirley Peterson; brothers-in-law, Robert (Helen) and Ronald (Etta Mae) Peterson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mamie Donaldson and Doris Dennis, and a brother, Donald R. Baker.

Dorothy was a member of Carrollton Baptist Temple. She retired as Clerk of the Board of Carroll County Commissioners and was a Carroll County Hospice Volunteer. She was a frequent visitor to the Carroll County Library due to her love of reading and she enjoyed walking around town. She was also known for her wonderful pies and banana bread.

The family would like to thank those who cared for Dorothy from Crossroads Hospice, Stone Creek (Danbury) Assisted Living, Dr. Hostettler, and Nurse Julie.

Funeral services will be Friday, Dec. 13, 2019 at 11 a.m. in Dodds Funeral Home of Carrollton with Pastor David Powell officiating.

Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-7 p.m. in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Carrollton Baptist Temple or Community Hospice.

60 YEARS AGO From 1959 FPS Files Plans were announced by the Ohio Department of Transportation for improving St. Rt. 43 between St. Rt. 171 and Malvern.

Tom Harp, former grid mentor at Carrollton and Massillon High Schools and backfield coach at West Point, was the guest speaker at the annual CHS football banquet attended by over 250 persons.

50 YEARS AGO From 1969 FPS Files Columbia Gas of Ohio, Inc., began operations in its new Carrollton office at 308 S. Lisbon St. where Paul W. Temple, local office manager, was shown in a front page photo.

Carrollton Schools Supt. Joseph R. Carlisle was elected president of the Carrollton Chamber of Commerce.

Staff Sergeant Diana Wise, a 1965 graduate of Carrollton High School, was one of four girls in training as an air traffic controller at Travis Air Force Base near Fairfield, Calif.

Marc A. Griffeth of Coudersport, PA, formerly of Carrollton, and Merle James Bennett of Carrollton filled Carroll County’s Induction Call No. 236 into the Armed Services.

40 YEARS AGO From 1979 FPS Files The Catholic Diocese of Steubenville offered an option for the construction of an ambulatory health facility in Carroll County.

The land was at the junction of St. Rts. 39 and 43 at the west corporation of Carrollton.

Mrs. Mark (Debbie) Benington was installed as president of the Carrollton Suburban Garden Club.

Carrollton High School students Mike Libertore, Roy Mangun and Lynn McLean were pictured working on the construction of a house being built by Buckeye Vocational School students in New Philadelphia.

The Malvern Hornets recorded a one-point 48-47 win over Garaway due to foul line free shots by Malvern senior Gregg Steffey, who also led the Hornets with 14 points.

30 YEARS AGO From 1989 FPS Files A collection of paintings by Clyde Singer, a native of Malvern, was on display at the Canton Art Institute.

Rich Hutchison of Amsterdam, a sophomore at Edison South High School was chosen as the school’s representative to attend the Hugh O’Brien Leadership Conference and workshop at Mount Union College in Alliance.

The Carrollton Warriors entered the 1989 wrestling season last week with a “two win bang”, pinning down a big victory over Coshocton 63-9 and a 35-31 win over New Philadelphia.

Motor City Speed and Sports, owned by Norm Fox, moved into a new location at 7140 Alliance Rd., Malvern, adjacent to Fox Auto Parts.

20 YEARS AGO From 1999 FPS Files A dedication ceremony for the new gymnasium at Carrollton’s Bell-Herron Middle School, was scheduled for Dec. 12. The $866,850 facility was dedicated to the youth of the Carrollton Exempted Village School District.

Philip Pavick of Fargo Rd., Dellroy, was elected president of the newly formed Carroll County Republican Boosters.

Miss Allison Campbell, a freshman at Carrollton High School, was chosen to dance the leading role of Clara in the Canton Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker.

Carrolton cagers who each hit double digit scoring in the Warriors 66-52 opening win over the Harrison Central Huskies included Matt Moore with 16 points, Nathan Snode, 15; Ryan Roof, 12, and Cody Shockey, 11.

10 YEARS AGO From 2009 FPS Files Allan Furbee was elected president of the Carroll County Township Association of Trustees and Fiscal Officers.

A special service was scheduled for Dec. 13 to mark the closing of the United Community Church (Bethlehem Presbyterian Church) established in 1893 in Malvern.

Nancy Wheaton was named Business Woman of the Year by the Carrollton Business Women.

Merle Devitt’s “Accents” celebrated the band’s 50th anniversary while playing for a dance at Bayard Grange. The band’s members included Devitt, Jay Becker, Rich Sutton, Gary Brotherton and Jeff Haynam.

Steven McCullough, son of Terry and Nancy McCullough of Carrollton, competed in the 2009 Ford Iron Man Triathlon in Phoenix, AZ.

Carrollton Middle School presents ‘Elf the Musical’

The Carrollton Middle School classes presented the musical, Elf Jr. on Friday and Saturday evenings, Dec. 6 and 7.

Those attending either show

at the Performing Arts Center received an evening full of fun, laughter and music.

Logan Pridemore delivered a great portrayal of Buddy the Elf. The story begins with Buddy finding out from Santa Claus that he wasn’t really one of the elves at the North Pole.

Santa reveals that his father lives

in New York City and Buddy sets out to find his family.

One of the best chuckles during the performance was when Santa was trying to explain to Buddy how to get to New York City and had to explain that they were at the North Pole and EVERYTHING was south. Buddy did learn that it

The event will be held from 9-11:30 a.m. in the elementary school cafeteria and meals cost $4 for kids and $6 for adults.

Class members and parents will provide pancakes and sausage plus craft activities for kids, as well as a special guest from the North Pole. Class advisor Holly Davis said Breakfast with Santa has long been a community program at the Highlandtown Volunteer Fire Department, but

year’s festivities. Davis said the student organization offered to host the fete at the school.

“The fire department is doing a remodeling project and were unable to hold the event,” she said. “I said we would do it and we needed money for the prom.

The parents are cooking and juniors are serving, cleaning and helping with crafts.”

Kids can enjoy making snowmen items and Santa Claus handprints, plus they can meet Santa himself and get a photo.

Proceeds will benefit the Class of 2020 prom this April.

The urge to serve your country is not limited to just those who carry a riffle. There are many ways you can serve your country in the armed forces.

I know of no one who is appreciated more on the battlefield than the corpsman or medic. They are on the battlefield where the action is taking place risking their lives in the process.

They treat the wounded on the spot and then send them to a field hospital for future care or operation.

From there they are sent further away to a permanent hospital and then to convalescent facilities, all of which are staffed with caring doctors and nurses.

I once asked a lady who was a nurse during World War II, what was the most difficult case you handled while a nurse during the war? She informed me that there were many very difficult moments. All the training she went through to be a nurse did not really prepare her for the task of dealing with wounded and dying of war.

However, the most touching and satisfying case was when a very young dying soldier kept calling for his mother. She said, “I played the part of his mother and he calmed down and seemed to die peacefully.”

Please remember to keep all of our military personnel and their families in your prayers.

Darlene Smith and Mary Huffman have been elected co-presidents of the Carrollton Garden Club for 2020.

The streets of New York were wonderfully depicted with parents, mothers with strollers, business people, tourists, and even included the New York street requirement of a mime.

Buddy finds love with Jovie, played by Jozelynn Nitz. Jovie

had to rediscover the Christmas Spirit.

Directed by Vonda Barnhart with Julie Roebuck as assistant director and Jordon Provost serving as vocal director, the middle school gave a great performance.

Other crew members were fly operator Ron Nuzzolillo,

stage manager Grace Barnhart, sound crew Mehgan Harsh and Rebecca Stoneman, spotlight Tobias Barnhart and stage crew Alex Lowery, Allie Hale and Emily Schaar.

As it should, the Christmas epic had a happy ending for Buddy the Elf, his girlfriend and his family.

Energy was through the roof and excitement ruled back stage with the cast before the evening performance began. Buddy the Elf, played by Logan Pridemore and the whole cast and crew were ready for the curtain to rise.

With a little help from our granddaughter, Violet, I came up with this cool idea. Last year she gave me and her other grandma tea bags that she made herself for Christmas presents. She grew all the ingredients she needed in her backyard. Then she purchased the tea bags online. The tag attached to the bag was plain white so she wrote what type of tea it was and drew a colored flower around it.

To make her present complete, she put the finished tea bags in muslin bags with a draw string closing. For those of us who love to drink tea, it was a very thoughtful gift!

Unless your herbs are dried already, it is a little late to make tea bags this year but... that’s why this week’s book will come in handy! It is full of fun ideas you could make for all the people you love! And, if you don’t want to make gifts to pass

Warriors move to 2-1 on the season Carrollton defeats West Holmes, fall to Malvern Hornets CARROLLTON – The Carrollton Warriors boys basketball team improved to 2-1 on the season after a 10-point road victory over the West Holmes Knights Saturday night.

The Warriors trailed 10-8 after the first quarter of action, but went on to outscore the Knights in each of the final three quarters of actions.

Carrollton held a 24-21 lead at halftime and added 17 more points in the third quarter. The Warriors outscored West Holmes 17-11 in the final quarter of regulation.

“Proud of the effort of our young men,”

Carrollton Coach Mike Aukerman said following Carrollton’s 58-48 defeat of West Holmes. “It was a long trip on a bus Saturday and we came out a little lethargic, but we got to half with a slim lead and knew we had to adjust a bit and get back to what we do.”

Adam Chaney finished as the leading scorer for Carrollton, putting up a game-high 19 points. He also hauled in a game-high nine rebounds.

The Warriors outrebounded West Holmes 33-22.

Carrollton senior Brady Benner followed Chaney’s scoring effort with

17 points of his own.

Jimmy Birong recorded nine points and Gage Poole scored eight.

“Brady did a great job again handling the point and Adam controlled the boards with some help from Jimmy and Brady,” Aukerman said. “It was an effort based win because we just wanted to come home with a victory. Gage had a big game for us and Talen [Timberlake] provided some big minutes off the bench.”

Carrollton played host to Malvern Dec. 3 in the second consecutive battle of Carroll County schools.

The Warriors managed to take a 2221 lead into halftime, despite only scoring six points in the second quarter.

Malvern’s defense held Carrollton scoreless in the third quarter, as the Hornets took a 31-22 lead entering the final quarter.

The Hornets poured it on in the fourth quarter, scoring 20 points, defeating the Warriors 51-37.

Birong led Carrollton’s scoring effort with nine points. Chaney followed with seven points and nine boards. Griffin Bagozzi added six points for the Warriors.

“We have a big week ahead as we play two very talented opponents in Marlington and Ridgewood,” Aukerman said.

CHS wrestlers open season at Lake Duals

UNIONTOWN - The Carrollton wrestling team kicked off their season Saturday, Dec. 7 at Lake High School, competing in the annual Lake Duals.

The Warriors finished the tournament with a dual record of 3-1, defeating Tuslaw 39-29, Mayfield 42-40 and Lake B 54-22. Carrollton only team loss of the tournament came against’s Lake’s A-team, losing the match 41-36.

One of Carrollton’s highlights of the tournament came against Lake. CHS senior Alex Carrothers threw Fred Hausser on his back almost immediately, earning the pin in six seconds, setting the Carrollton school record, previously held by Brandon Daniels and Joey Miller (:07).

“Alex is one of our senior leaders this year. We’re really excited that he set the record for the quickest pin,” Carrollton’s Head Coach Ken Pasiuk said. “He has done a great job this year in the room pushing himself and others.”

Carrollton Head Coach Ken Pasiuk earned his 250th career win at the tournament, improving his CHS record to 250-76.

“Carrollton is just an amazing place to raise a family. I am very lucky to have gotten the opportunity to coach here and help mold our young men daily,” Coach Pasiuk said following his milestone victory. “Winning is always fun but watching young adults become men through this tough sport of wrestling and then watching them succeed after high school is such a blessing.”

“All of our guys are committed to the program,” Coach Pasiuk said. “They not only want success for themselves but for the team. There are a lot of areas where we need improvement however it’s early in the year. That’s what’s fun about coaching.”

Coach Pasiuk believes the team can make strides as the season progresses.

“Everyone can always improve,” he said. “My goal has always been to get 1% better every day whether it be at practice or in a match.”

Pasiuk says he’s impressed with the effort from his wrestlers to start the season.

“I’m actually impressed with all of our guys,” he said. “They have great attitudes and have been working very hard this year.”

The Warriors are set to open Eastern Buckeye Conference action Thursday, Dec. 12 at home against the Canton South Wildcats.

Lady Warriors fall to 0-4 with two losses CARROLLTON - The Carrollton Lady Warriors basketball team dropped to 0-4 on the season with losses to Marlington and Dover.

Dover hosted Carrollton Dec. 4, defeating the Lady Warriors 53-32.

Malina Moore finished as Carrollton’s leading scorer against Dover with 10 points. Abby Laizure followed with nine points, including a pair of triples.

Carrollton made four of their nine free-throw attempts.

Grace Leslie made a pair of baskets, scoring four points.

Lauren Marmo put up six points for the Lady Warriors against Dover.

Carrollton opened up Eastern Buckeye Conference (EBC) action against Marlington Saturday, Dec. 7.

The Dukes outscored the Lady

Warriors 46-29.

Laizure led Carrollton with 12 points, all three-point shots.

Moore scored five points (and a triple) for the Lady Warriors and Leslie added three.

Carrollton will be back in action Saturday, Dec. 14 at home against the Canton South.

Despite an 0-2 start to the season, the Minerva Lady Lions basketball team is rolling, winning three straight games and opening conference action with a victory to improve to 3-2 on the year.

The three-game win streak was ignited when Minerva dominated Canton Central Catholic 51-21 Dec. 1.

The Lady Lions jumped out to a hot start against the United Eagles.

Minerva led 13-3 after the first quarter of play and 22-17 at halftime.

The Lady Lions held onto a 33-30 lead entering the final quarter of action against the Lady Eagles.

A 15-point fourth quarter propeled Minerva to a 48-37 triumph.

Jenna Cassidy balled out for Minerva, scoring a team-high 12 points.

Elyssa Imler and Maddie Foutz scored

eight points each for Minerva. Ella Kendrick and Coletta Miller scored seven points apiece.

The Lions improved to 1-0 in Eastern Buckeye Conference (EBC) with a 3835 victory over Canton South.

Miller led the Lady Lions with 18 points against the Wildcats.

Minerva will resume play Saturday, Dec. 14 at West Branch.

Sandy Valley girls basketball team improves to 2-0 The Sandy Valley Lady Cardinals defense held Malvern to 10 points at the half and cruised to victory in their home opener.

Karlee Altimore stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals.

Allison Neary and Abbey Parker both garnered 7 rebounds a piece.

Kirston Moriconi poured in another 14 points down low.

After roaring out to a 50-12 halftime lead, the Lady Cardinals cruised to a big win at Claymont.

“This was a great way to open the season for us,” Malvern’s coach Robbie Wilson said. “Our kids have been working extremely hard and it's great to see some of that hard work pay off on the mat.”

The Malvern Hornets placed fourth as a team at the Malvern High School Invitational.

The Hornets finished with six wrestlers on the podium.

Malvern’s Johnny Walker placed second in the 113 lbs. match; Trentyn Skinner placed second at 220 lbs.

Malvern senior female wrestler Olivia Daniels finished third at 195 lbs. along with Tommy Thompson at 170 lbs.

“Olivia Daniels had a great day placing 3rd overall and really battled out there,” Malvern head coach Robbie Wilson said.

“Trentyn Skinner and Johnny Walker also had big days just coming up short in the finals.”

Olen Butler (132 lbs.) and Xavier Watson (160 lbs.) both finished fourth.

“I am very proud of how our kids wrestled today. We came out and competed well and wrestled hard,” Coach Wilson said following the tournament. “With the field we had at the tournament this year, finishing

4th is something we can build on and be proud of as a team.”

Coach Wilson says a lot of volunteer workers helped make

the tournament possible.

“I would like to thank all of our tournament volunteers who helped make yesterday a success,”

he said. “They did a great job and made everything run smoothly.”

Malvern is set to return to action Dec. 14 at United High School.

Cards win Tusky Valley tri-meet

The Sandy Valley Wrestling team opened up the season traveling to Tusky Valley for a triangular meet with New Philadelphia and Tusky Valley.

The Cardinals tallied two victories on the evening defeating New Philadelphia 50-22 and

Tusky Valley 60-18.

The Cardinals were led by Bear Watkins, Justin King, Brody Marks, Matt Gentry, Gavin Crank, and Bam Moyer all with two pins. Wrestlers also recording two victories were Seth Armstrong (pin and forfeit), Wyatt Moyer

(pin and decision), and Branden Boggs (tech fall and forfeit).

The Cardinals next competition will be on December 13th and 14th at 4:30 p.m. and 10 a.m. when they travel to Barnesville for the the Doan Ford Invitational.

CARROLLTON The Carrollton boys and girls bowling teams were both victorious last week at home, both earning league wins over the Alliance Aviators at Carroll Lanes.

The CHS boys defeated Alliance by a score of 2,478-2,127.

Carrollton was led by Fred Tessanne, who bowled games of 202 and 215 for a series total of 417.

Tessanne’s effort was followed by

Clint Brackin who bowled games of 190 and 174 for a series of 374.

Aaron Clark bowled a series total of 351, including games of 187 and 167; Trevor Burkhart recorded a total series of 349 followed by Coby Weiland and Brant George, who both bowled individual games of 150 and 133, respectively.

The girls went on to defeat Alliance 1,663-1,233.

Warriors to victory with two games of 225 and 148, finishing with a total score of 373.

Carrollton’s Anissa Flanagan recorded games of 147 and 204 for a total series of 351. Cailyn Bright rolled a series total of 348, consisting of 214 and 134 games.

Olivia Ellington recorded a 300 with games of 147 and 153 followed by Carenda Fowler who scored a 291 with games of 142 and 149.

BOWERSTON - The Conotton Valley Lady Rockets played host to the Tuscarawas Central Catholic Saints Dec. 4.

The Lady Rockets earned the lead early when senior Carly Caldwell scored. She finished the game with 10 points.

Conotton Valley held a 12-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, but were outscored by three points in the second quarter.

Lyon exploded in the first half of action, scoring 10 of her 18 points then.

The game was tied at 22-22 entering halftime.

The Saints held a 33-32 advantage entering the final quarter of regulation.

TCC dominated the fourth quarter of play, outscoring Conotton Valley 17-12 to hang onto a 50-44 victory.

“Although the final score did not

reflect a win, I’m really pleased with how our girls played a complete game,” Conotton Valley coach Jen Hiles said. “Especially considering how limited we are with such a small team - in size and numbers.”

Conotton Valley is now 0-3 on the young season.

The Lady Rockets are scheduled to host the Tusky Valley Trojans Wednesday, Dec. 11 with a JV tipoff of 7 p.m.

MINERVA - The Minerva Lions boys basketbll team improved to 2-1 with wins over Crestview and Salem. The Lions fell 73-45 to Dover in a non-conference game.

In another out of conference battle, the Lions defeated the Crestview Rebels 65-45.

Minerva opened Eastern Buckeye Conference (EBC) action Friday, Dec. 6 at home

against the visiting Salem Quakers.

Minerva trailed Salem early in the contest, facing a 25-15 halftime deficit.

The Lions regrouped and outscored Salem 17-10 in the second quarter, cutting the Quaker’s lead to 35-32.

Christian Academy students to present ‘The Best Christmas Present Ever’ Friday The Carroll County Christian Academy students in grades first through sixth had the pleasure of entertaining an annual Christmas banquet for the JOY class of First Baptist Church in New Philadelphia Dec. 4.

It is finally time! I believe we can all agree that it is now completely appropriate to fully embrace Christmas music.

Many people have strong opinions about Christmas music, and those opinions can spark some heated debate, especially in regards to the timing of enjoying the festive tunes of the Christmas Season. There are those that are delighted to “Jingle the Bells” before they even begin the planning of their Thanksgiving feast, then there are those that quickly offer a genuine “Bah, Humbug!” as soon as they hear the slightest hint of a “Sleigh Bell Ring” before December arrives. Now, being only a little more than “12 Days away from Christmas” day, we often find ourselves surrounded by beautiful Christmas music late into each “Holy Night”. Just incase you were wondering, I am loving every minute of it!

You may already know this; not only are most of the Christmas songs we love catchy tunes, but many of their themes and lyrics come from passages in the Bible. A great example of this is “Joy To The World”. The lyrics to this beautiful song were taken from a book of poems based on the Psalms, and written by Isaac Watts in 1719. This specific poem was an adaptation of Psalm 98. I am not writing this to give you a history lesson about Christmas music; I am writing you this in hopes of you picking up your bible and seeing for yourself and inspiring you to carry a song of Joy in your heart.

Psalm 98:1 “Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.” As we decorate, spend time with family and friends, listen to Christmas music, and celebrate the birth of Jesus, we can and should have a song in our hearts. We can choose to embrace Joy, we can choose to help bring Joy into this world. A great way to avoid falling into the trappings of stress and anger is to fill up on as much Joy as we can. Psalm 98:4-6 “Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; make music to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing, with trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn- shout for joy before the LORD, the King.” As we fill our hearts with a song of Joy, the next step is to share that Joy at every opportunity. Share the Joy that Jesus gives us with our families, our co-workers, and people we interact with along the way. They say a smile is contagious; if that is the case, close contact with the Joy of Jesus can start a beautiful epidemic of Joy! In Luke 2:8-12, an angel of the Lord gives a message to the nearby shepherds; verse 10-11 reads: “But the angel said to them “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord…”. The good news of Jesus is a message of Great Joy! As we celebrate His birth, I pray we focus on His Joy and together our hearts will sing out for all to clearly see our Joy. Local NWTF chapter donates turkeys to Loaves and Fishes The Carroll County Doublebeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation donated 20 turkeys, 320 pounds, to Loaves and Fishes for Thanksgiving.

Brad Luckey, treasurer for the Carroll County Doublebeards Chapter, purchased the turkeys from Kishman’s IGA which has been supportive of the organization.

Luckey noted the turkeys were purchased from a portion of the

proceeds raised from the organization’s banquet. “Most of the money goes to conservation,” Luckey explains. The NWTF “sends back a percentage from the money raised at the banquet to be used on a local level.”

In addition to purchasing the turkeys, the chapter hosted 21 kids for Jakes Day, which introduced kids to the outdoors.

The Rev. Gordon Warner noted Loaves and Fishes provided clients with 900 pounds of ham

purchased from Sugardale.

Loaves and Fishes distributes food on the first and third Mondays of each month. The pantry is located at 211 Moody Ave. S.W., Carrollton, and can be reached at 330-627-3424.
