Two brothers from Carroll County accomplished a very rare feat. Matthew and Jeffery P. Owens, formerly of Magnolia, were both promoted to chief petty officer in the United States Navy on Sept. 13 at the same time in two different states. As exciting as it was, it also left parents Joe and Darlie Owens of Magnolia with what Darlie calls a “very interesting challenge” - which parent would attend which ceremony. A coin flip decided the matter. Joe attended the ceremony in Newport News, Va., and had the honor of pinning the couple’s youngest son, Jeffery. Darlie attended the ceremony in Jacksonville, Fla., and had the honor of pinning their oldest son, Matthew. Darlie stated, “This is a big honor for our family, and both Joe and myself are very proud of our sons’ accomplishments while serving this Great Nation.” Matthew enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Jan. 21, 2004 as a Helicopter Anti-Submarine Warfare Specialist and Search and Rescue Swimmer. He attended boot camp in Great Lakes, Ill., graduating in March and transferred to Pensacola, Fla., where he attended Aircrew School, Rescue Swimmer and AW “A” School.

After graduating “A” School, he was transferred to Jacksonville, Fla., where he learned how to fly in the Sikorsky SH-60B through the HSL-40 Fleet Replacement Squadron. He received orders to HSL-42 Proud Warriors in July 2005, where he completed three deployments to the Persian Gulf and Somalia Operating Areas, and one deployment to South America and Jamaica. Rolling up on his shore tour in October 2010, Matthew chose to become an instructor at now HSM-40 where he would not only instruct the SH60B, but also the newest aircraft the MH-60R. Looking for a change of scenery and to fast track his career, he and his now wife, Christy, chose to move to Hawaii in January, 2015. Shortly after arriving, he volunteered for a West Pacific deployment that would take him to Korea, Guam, the coast of China, Australia, and Singapore. Looking to move closer to home, he transferred in June, 2018, to HSM Weapons School Atlantic in Jacksonville, Fla., where he would train and prepare the fleet for deployments all around the world.

Sheriff’s office investigating incidents of cows being beaten By KIMBERLY LEWIS FPS Editor The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the beating of three cows at a Mace Road, Carrollton, property. Sheriff Dale Williams said deputies learned about the incidents Saturday, Nov. 2, after a woman reported one of her daughter’s cow had been beaten. She told deputies it was the third cow to be injured by an unknown person or persons over the past two months. Williams said a veterinarian examined the third cow on Nov. 3 and stated it had been kicked by someone wearing steel-toe shoes or beaten. It had to be euthanized because of the severity of its

injuries. The property owner told deputies her daughter shows her cows and the two other cows were sold at a substantial loss compared to what they were worth. The family reported putting up trail cameras in an effort to catch the person or persons responsible, but cameras were covered to prevent identification. Sheriff Williams said the investigation is continuing and asks anyone with information about this animal cruelty case to call the sheriff’s office at 330-627-2141 and leave a message for the sheriff. The family is providing a cash reward to anyone who provides information that results in the arrest and prosecution of the individual or individuals.
