SMITHFIELD

By Esther McCoy

I needed the assistance of someone from the Jewett area this week and was amazed how fast it came to my rescue. If any of you know how fast unwanted items can pile up, you will know that I was amazed when I called late Monday evening for the rental of a dumpster from Dave’s Refuse and Roll Off Service, needing the biggest possible, and guessed it would take several days to arrive. Lo and behold, a call came the next morning that it would arrive by midafternoon. And it was. Thank you, Austin.

I am happy to hear that the Crestview Inn Restaurant is now in business for those who want a hot lunch and want to help the culinary students learn their skills. Glen Zalenski, the instructor at the Crestview Inn, said it will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to experience waiting on the public from Tuesday through Thursday. There are dine-in and takeout options. “This is going to be the first time in two years that we’re going to be open for the public. They will all be first-year students because there was no class for the 2020 juniors.”

I see where a friend from long ago, Marlene Worklan of Hopedale, had a brother who died. She and I were good friends when she lived in Smithfield with her sister, Rose Klan. We rode to work in Steubenville on occasion too. Sorry for your loss, Marlene.

Speaking of losses, my brother-in-law, Andrew (“Andy” to me), died very unexpectedly on Oct. 6 in the Weirton Medical Center. He was my go-to when my computer threw unknown problems at me, or I couldn’t get into my computer for unknown reasons. Each time I walked across the field to their house, he would offer me a cup of coffee within minutes of being there (And he made great coffee.). Our families of the Toths and McHughes, are devastated, needless to say. We ask for your prayers.

I saw a short story on the many uses of rabbits, beside dressing in a tuxedo jacket and carrying a basket full of candies for the good little boys and girls on Easter. Did you know that a rabbit can be litter trained? Ancient Romans loved to eat rabbit and believed it made the women beautiful when they ate them. The largest rabbit ever weighed 49 pounds and was 4 foot 3 inches long. And wild and domestic rabbits cannot mate as they are from different species. As Bugs Bunny would say, “TTTTHHHHAAAATTTTSSSS all, folks.”

Ttthhhaaatttss all, folks.

Operation Christmas Child, Samaritan’s Purse Christmas boxes are available at the back of the Deersville UM Church with a list of items one can put in the box. The deadline is Nov. 14 to have them back at the church to be delivered to children around the world for this Christmas season.

It sounds like a great time to follow the Moravian Trail to see the fall foliage and get a meal that supports the fire department.

The Woody Paul Blanket Mission was held at the Deersville United Methodist Church in the Fellowship Hall, with 11 women and one man making 19 blankets. Kathy Mallarnee and her son Robin made it in from the Columbus area. A delicious covered dish lunch was enjoyed.

The Women of Mission of the Deersville UM Church held their monthly meeting in the church’s fellowship hall on Thursday, Oct. 7, with eight members present. After grace, the group enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by the Deersville General Store. Past minutes and the treasurers’ report were approved, and a collection was taken. The group will postpone its vintage-style show until Mother’s Day 2022. The group discussed doing a Women of Mission Sunday. They voted to give $200 to Blessings in a Backpack to give money to a member who is ill and have a household shower for the daughter of a member. The next meeting will be on Nov. 4 at 11 a.m. in the fellowship hall, and members are asked to bring a covered dish.

Bosler’s Honey Bees And Accessories had their last “Share, Learn and Grow” Saturday until April 2022. Their honey is now on sale at the Deersville General Store. They will be closing at the end of October but will open by appointment by calling 330-401-5889.

Welcome to Deersville, Krista Cochran. Krista bought the seasonal Victorian home next door to the old Presbyterian Church.

Please support all the local businesses. They are the people who support our children and civic groups. Some Deersville businesses are the Deersville General Store (740-827-4203); Bosler’s Honey Bees and Accessories (330-401- 5889); The Stand on U.S. 250 by Coultrap’s (330-204-9407, closed Saturday and Sunday) and the Hayseeds Homesteader Trading Post (740-491-2835). It is a good idea to call ahead and make sure they are open or make an appointment.
