New Athens council taking next steps on wastewater plant

New Athens’ November council meeting brought back the current status of its wastewater plant concerns. While some of the issues have been recurring, mayor Joe Petro made mention of a newer quandary that had come to light. At the end of October, Earthtek Environmental visited the wastewater plant and conveyed to Petro that the EPA would eventually send representatives to do a bacteria test with samples from the wastewater plant.

“They said the EPA guy was going to come in and take a test and take it back to the lab and see if it generate bacteria. If it wouldn’t, then he would have it analyzed to see why it wouldn’t generate — to see what’s in there, what’s causing it for the bacteria to be killed. That’s the problem there. The bacteria’s not working,” he explained. Something of note from Petro’s earlier comment is that an absence of certain bacteria could prevent the breakdown of solid debris in the wastewater plant’s primary tanks.

However, Petro’s talk with Earthtek moved council member Mark Arnold into the first of several concerning bullet points with the treatment plant. Arnold explained he had recent correspondence with Jeff Carr. Carr is the project engineer representing ADR and Associates; the firm was hired by New Athens and facilitated the installation of Earthtek’s treatment plant.

First, the ultraviolet system needs to be replaced. And Carr confirmed, “That’s exactly right.” Carr told Arnold that the “system is working fine everywhere else.”

But while everything else is operational, there were numerous red flags as potential problems for the future. As Arnold worked down through more of the bullet points, the filter was brought up. The filter has holes in it, which could be an issue, too. The holes would prevent filtration from working appropriately, and it could allow “bad water” to leave the plant.

Next, the “solids are bulking up in the primary,” and that was attributed to mixing pump issues, as Arnold was informed.

However, in recent months, heightened stormwater and the presence of nonflushables have likely made the situation worse. And that’s not even considering the possible impact of the earlier-mentioned bacteria shortage within the primary.

As Arnold moved through the list, he touched on what could be the largest driving force behind the plant’s complications: one of the tanks is inoperational. New Athens’ plant is broken down into two halves. Each half is the same and features a primary tank and a secondary sequencing batch reactor tank.

“SBRII, which is one half of the plant, is up and running. SBRI is down. That’s when we robbed SBRI to keep SBRII running. Can’t do it,” Arnold exclaimed. “That is where they start breaking down the solids and stuff. Then it converts it.” he shared.

On paper, solids should get broken down in both I and II cooperatively. So with one being off, the SBRII tank system is doing all the work.

According to Earthtek’s New Athens case study, the Sabre SBR system can be reduced to one tank, but it’s not ideal. And New Athens has been combating the tradeoffs, which were on full display during the summer when there had been more rain. But the question was whether both tanks had ever both been operational at the same time. And according to council member Matt Litman Sr., the two tanks have never been running concurrently since the beginning. On paper, the plant should “never ever reach capacity.” But that’s been the case as Litman Sr. stated and also what Arnold explained to Carr. So while it’s not supposed to happen, both council members expressed that it’s been a reality. And Arnold added it’s because the plant hasn’t been running correctly.

Regardless, it was emphasized to Arnold that both tanks “must be operational.”

SBRI was “robbed” to ensure that SBRII was working. But both SBR units should be running simultaneously. Running both allows the system as a whole to never be at capacity.

Put simply, Arnold was advised that “the plant needs to be up and running properly.” It would relieve strain and redistribute the workload between the two tanks. And the heavy rains that exacerbated the plant’s problems could be handled more readily.

Arnold asked about all the debris in the tanks and was told to look into automatic bar screens. “It’s a debris catcher,” Arnold relayed to the council, but it costs around $150,000.

Additionally, Arnold was also told that flushed medications (antibiotics or dialysis and chemo medicines, for example) could be playing a role in the plant’s absence of decomposition bacteria. And the medicines will stay in the system for years and years and will continue to kill bacteria for that span.

Arnold asked about using yeast to propagate bacterial blooms in the tanks, and he was told it would work, but it could become expensive.

Moreso, Carr told Arnold that the village needs to start taking note of ultraviolet faults. UV disinfection is used as part of the plant’s tertiary functions, but it can be finicky sometimes, according to Carr. While the ultraviolet keeps track of its own faults, it can sometimes be triggered by false positives. Even something as simple as soda going through the system can tally as a fault. But regardless of false positives, Arnold was told that the UV fault data needs to be collected daily — and the water needs to be checked for opacity, as well.

As for the ultraviolet bulbs, Arnold confirmed with Carr that they are changed yearly, which was “perfect,” according to the project engineer.

In addition, monthly operating reports (MOR) were brought up, and Carr told Arnold to get that information for the summer; the reports can provide insights into influent and effluent water chemical balances (iron, manganese, and fluoride)and pH level data.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Carr recommended the village get all the MOR data to deduce for leak locations in the water system, as well. What Arnold calls “free water” already exists; a leak in the system is already present somewhere along the line, as Arnold declared. “We have leakage in the system — right now. Because we should not be processing this much water when it’s raining.”

Carr told Arnold that’s where the problem lies, but where the excess water is entering the tract is unknown. Carr had suggested this before, but he said to start “pulling manholes and watch the flow.” Theoretically, this method could eventually show where water is getting in, and that should lead to the leak. Arnold and public utilities supervisor Matt Litman Jr. think the problem lies “around the ball field.”

After spelling out the wastewater issues, Arnold segued with how to procure funding to remedy the problems. He admitted that the village needs some help. Petro added that the situation couldn’t be addressed by other parties or engineers anyway until the leak in the water system had at least been isolated. The EPA will be involved in one form or another to analyze the bacteria, but solicitor Travis Collins says it “might not be the worst thing in the world.”

They would need to permit any work regardless, per clerk-treasurer Denise Geanangel.

The lack of progress was briefly discussed among council members; Petro assured that baby steps had been taken, but it’s all part of a larger process that requires time and effort.

“The process has started. We’re not sitting on this. The process has started to see where the problem is. They’re supposed to be checking that,” Petro said about the EPA’s sampling bacteria from the plant. “You got to start somewhere. And that’s where they’re starting.

The process is in the works.”

The council started working on an action plan. Engineering consultant firms W E Quicksall & Associates Inc and E L Robinson Engineering were tossed around as potential contacts for the village’s next move. Geanangel volunteered to contact Quicksall “to get the ball rolling,” and the council supported the idea. But E L Robinson came into the forefront since they had done work with Cadiz. While there were debates over which engineer to pursue, the council ultimately agreed to reach out to E L Robinson after village administrator Tosha Giesey talked to Cadiz wastewater superintendent Tom Carter; he agreed to reach out to the firm on behalf of New Athens.

While bacteria testing is a newer development as opposed to the solid debris backup, a system leak, and an inactive tank, many of them are connected. Spearheading all the tank’s discrete issues could work to get the entire wastewater system to operate optimally.

For now, the plan for the village council is to await the EPA’s expected testing of the bacteria and get more insight from engineering firms that have a hand in local affairs and understand the process.

Commissioners pass resolution for OneOhio plan

The Harrison County commissioners met for their weekly meeting Wednesday, and while the session overall was relatively short, the three commissioners passed a resolution that would help the county move forward with the OneOhio plan. Resolution 52-21 was passed as an emergency to agree to the “material terms of the OneOhio subdivision settlement.” The settlement is national but has been broken down by state, county, and village scales because the

effects of the “opioid epidemic” have been felt on the micro and macro levels. Counties and villages that opted into the agreement earlier this year will eventually see a trickle-down of disbursement to specifically combat the opioid epidemic. And the resolution authorized commissioner Paul Coffland (president of the board of commissioners) to “execute the participation agreement.” The longwinded resolution featured a memorandum of understanding that cash allotments would be dedicated for “abating the opioid epidemic.” Moreso, the resolution was passed

as an emergency “for the preservation of public health, peace, welfare, and safety of Harrison County, Ohio. The reason for the emergency is to ensure the prompt pursuit of funds to assist in abating the opioid epidemic throughout Ohio.” Estimates among the commissioners arrived at a probable range of $25,000 to $35,000 for the disbursement, but nothing was confirmed. Governor announces new appointments to OneOhio Recovery Foundation Earlier in November, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced his five appointments to the OneOhio Recovery Foundation board and his two appointments to the Foundation’s expert panel. The Foundation will soon be established to distribute a portion of the settlement funds from the drug manufacturers and distributors of opioids to communities in Ohio.

“Establishing the OneOhio Recovery Foundation is the next step in enhancing Ohio’s prevention, treatment, and recovery support services. The investments made by the Foundation will create an opportunity for local communities to plan for and sustain efforts that address the ever-evolving drug epidemic,”

The Foundation board, which will consist of 29 members when all appointments are made, will comprise of: • Six members selected by the state, five selected by the governor, and one selected by the attorney general.

• Four members from the legislature.

• Eleven members, with one member selected from each nonmetropolitan region.

• Eight members, with one member selected from each metropolitan region.

The state made an offer for resolution in the case of Sarah Smalley but was unable to proceed without a risk assessment.

The national average price of gasoline is projected to decline to $3.35 per gallon on Thanksgiving Day, but it’ll still be among the highest seen in over seven years. However, there remains a remote chance that should oil suddenly surge, gas prices could quickly follow and potentially beat 2012’s record for the most expensive national average ever for the date: $3.44 per gallon.

“Similarly to last year, motorists are contending with a rise in Covid cases ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday when many drive to celebrate with friends and family. Only this year, we’re also just cents away from the highest Thanksgiving gas prices ever recorded,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at fuel savings platform GasBuddy.

Historic Fort Steuben hosts Christmas at the Fort, with the Advent Market and colorful walkways of light, music, Nutcrackers, and fairy tale figures surrounding the Christmas tree in Fort Steuben Park.

“We have many talented vendors in the Advent Market this year,” said Paul Zuros, executive director of Historic Fort Steuben.

“The chalets will be open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from Nov. 26 to Dec. 19, with vendors selling crafts, food, and souvenirs while choral groups, Milly’s Kids’ Zone, the Holly Trolley, mini-firetruck rides, Mousetrap Puppet Theater, and tours of the reconstructed Fort Steuben add to the fun. Steubenville Parks and Recreation will be presenting holiday movies in the park on three Friday evenings. The Fort Steuben Visitor Center will feature an art exhibit, a model train village, and a Christmas shop that carries a variety of gifts, books, postcards, and city memorabilia.”

The Ohio Valley Model Railroad Display(248 N. 4th Street) will be open on Fridays and Saturdays to present a massive, detailed exhibit of an industrial Ohio Valley landscape with bridges, factories, creeks, buildings, and mountains.

The Christmas season wouldn’t be complete without a parade, and the Eastern Gateway Community College “Sights and Sounds” of Christmas parade is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 4 at noon.

Beatty Park on Lincoln Avenue has upgraded the trails through the historic nature preserve for those who enjoy winter hikes.

“This is truly a community event,” adds Barilla. “There are additional concerts and programs being held throughout the town.

It’s getting to look a lot like Christmas in Steubenville as lights, trees, and decorations are being put up in the historic downtown and around Fort Steuben Park. That is a guarantee that the 2021 Steubenville Nutcracker Village and Christmas at the Fort will be happening soon.

“Preparation is the key to success,” explained Fort president and Steubenville mayor Jerry Barilla. “With the help of so many businesses, organizations, and volunteers, we will be ready to present a magical experience again this year.”

The annual event will run from Nov. 23 to Jan. 8 this year and has become a tradition for many families. It has grown and includes many new features, most of which are free.

It all begins with “Steubenville Lights Up the Night” on Nov. 23 with the opening of the Advent Market at 3 p.m. followed by the blessing of the 30-foot Christmas tree at 5 p.m., a performance by Brenda Casey Dancers, a visit by Mr. and Mrs. Claus, the official lighting of the tree, and spectacular fireworks at 6:25 p.m.

To add to the celebration, the Steubenville Visitor Center has arranged for a light and music show at the Jefferson County courthouse on Market Street to follow the fireworks.

“Our courthouse is a beautiful part of both our history and our downtown,” noted Judy Bratten, assistant director at the Visitor Center. “We thought this would enhance our event as well as show off the structure. The light show will continue over four weekends.”

Visitors that day will see the historic downtown transformed into the Steubenville Nutcracker Village, with over 180 life-sized nutcrackers that inhabit the sidewalks, parks, and storefronts 24-7.

Chief designer of the nutcrackers, Therese Fedoryka, says she is enthusiastic for the seventh year of the event. “Our latest addition to the collection, a dazzling peacock nutcracker, was designed by Sonya Godfrey for our first nutcracker competition and will be revealed at the start of the season! We’re looking forward to the continuation of many holiday traditions here, such as hayrides, the children’s corner, and a nutcracker story walk organized by the Jefferson County Public Library, as well as some new additions!”

Freeport Christmas about-town coming next month The Freeport United Methodist Church is sponsoring a Christmas about-town on Dec. 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. This is an organized driving tour through the town of Freeport, with parts of the Christmas story being displayed.

The tour will start by Greenmont Union Cemetery from State Route 800 and go down Muskingum Street to Pine Street and past the Presbyterian Church. Then the tour will turn right on Main Street past the firehouse to the square. The procession will continue on Main Street to High Street, turning left on High Street, past the Methodist Church,

and down Easy Street back onto State Route 800. Displays will include live singing, acting, lights, and music.

Maps of the tour route will be available at the first stop on Muskingum Street. The first stop will be the census takers at Koch Candy on Muskingum Street. As you wind through town, you will see the inn, the wisemen, old St. Nick, angels and shepherds at Koch Funeral Home, and a live nativity scene at the Methodist Church. Ohio moves into regional final round, WV to quarters

CADIZ—And then there were eight! Eight teams are remaining in each OHSAA football division, that is. Teams across Ohio are set to enter the regional final round this weekend, and a handful of them are located right here in the Ohio Valley.

The Dover Tornadoes advanced in Division III Region 9 by way of a 24-7 victory over Kenston last weekend. The Tornadoes will be making their eighth regional championship appearance all-time (record of 1-6) and doing so against a well-known program in the Chardon Hilltoppers. The Hilltoppers knocked the Tornadoes from the playoffs in the 2019 quarterfinal round. The Tornadoes and Hilltoppers will square off at Harry Gilchrist Field in Ravenna.

St. Clairsville eliminated Meadowbrook from the 2020 playoffs, and the Red Devils were hungry for an encore in 2021. The lone Buckeye Eight team remaining in any division, the Red Devils opened some eyes with a 35-0 blanking of the Colts last weekend in Gnadenhutten in Region 15 play. Up next? A rubber match with the Bloom Carroll Bulldogs for a ticket to the Final Four in Division IV. The Devils bounced the Bulldogs in 2018 postseason play, and the Bulldogs returned the favor in 2020. The tiebreaker of recent years will take place in Zanesville at Sulsberger Stadium.

In Division V Region 17, the 2021 season came to an end for the Garaway Pirates. The Pirates fell to the South Range Raiders in a hard-fought 15-12 game last weekend.

In the OVAC 3A showdown in Division VI Region 23, the Fort Frye Cadets continued

their powerful march towards a state title. The Cadets have run through opponents in the postseason, and the Barnesville Shamrocks were no different. The 42-7 victory lands the Cadets in the regional final against West Jefferson.

In the other OVAC matchup, the small town Shadyside Tigers prevailed 43-28 against the River Pilots. The third-seeded Tigers will see the Division VII Region 27 top seed in the Newark Catholic Green Wave. Cadiz Cardinal fans of old may remember the Newark Catholic team from the late ‘90s; all these years later, and NC is still one of the strongest small school programs in the state. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. this evening at Quaker Stadium in New Philadelphia.

8 Husky football players draw All-Eastern Honors

BY ED BANKS Harrison News-Herald Sports Writer CADIZ—Though the closing of the 2021 Harrison Central football season arrived during the playoffs, Ohio’s distribution of player accolades has just begun. On Sunday, the Eastern District named all-football standouts and the positions that brought them honors.

For Harrison Central, that meant that Nathan Bertolino, Cam McAfee, Hayden Cassidy, Matthew Smith, Nate Frye, Parker Hutton, Jace Madzia, and Tre Rex were all assigned a

place in the District’s football honors.

In Division V, Bertolino (5 feet 11 inches, 195 pounds, senior) was named to the first-team offense for efforts in pounding out yardage for the Huskies as a running back. Also named to the First Team was McAfee (5 feet 9 inches, 165 pounds, freshman), who was named for his play as a defensive back. In Second Team recognition, Husky quarterback Cassidy (5 feet 10 inches, 160 pounds, sophomore) was named on offense, while teammate Smith (6 feet 1 inch, 210 pounds, senior) was named for his play on the offensive line.

On defense Second Team, Frye (5 feet 9

inches, 175 pounds, sophomore) was named for his outstanding play as a linebacker. Hutton (5 feet 10 inches, 185 pounds, sophomore) was also a standout that received second-team defensive honors as a defensive back. Madzia was also named to the second team for his efforts on special teams. For Husky fans, that specifically means that his efforts as a kicker, not just in punting but in all three phases of the game, were very good.

Rounding out the eight Huskies is Tre Rex, who earned special mention for his versatile allaround play.

Harrison’s Dunkle named All-Times Leader 2021

BY ED BANKS Harrison News-Herald Sports Writer CADIZ—Following another outstanding year of volleyball, Harrison Central’s senior McKayla Dunkle has earned her way into the ring of honor by being selected to the “2021 All-Times Leader Volleyball Team.” Her selection to the team shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. Over her four-year career, her presence on the court was not only known by the competition but also respected.

In upgrading her current athletic resume, Dunkle played to a record-breaking season this past fall. Also included in all of her honors stands a selection to both the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference’s (OVAC) and District 5’s “2021 All-Teams.”

In reviewing her personal gains, while at the net, she slammed home 329 kills, handed out 70 blocks, registered 116 digs, and got 50 jaw-dropping aces. As for school records, what she has established is positioned to stand for a long time. To date, her career sports accomplishments reflect 1,101 kills (a record), 270 blocks, 272 digs, and 104 aces.

“McKayla is the first person in our school’s history to go over 1000 kills,” said Harrison Central head volleyball coach Ray Hibbs. “She has had an outstanding career.

I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to coach her both during her freshman and senior seasons. She took on the role of leader this season and was a role model for the younger players.”

Good NEWS Praying Like the Big Guys

By Pastor Ken Staley Pleasant Grove & Harrisville United Methodist Churches PastorKenStaley@gmail.com Do you ever feel like your prayers don’t get past the ceiling? Have you ever held back telling God how you really feel about a situation because you’re afraid of being disrespectful? If you have, you’re in good company. There were many times when King David asked God, “Have you forgotten me? Lord, where are you? Why do the wicked prosper? Why do my enemies surround me?” David lamented many times but, more often than not, ended his prayers in praise. David was a champion at asking for mercy, and God always came through.

When David prayed, he always reminded God of his mercy, “Turn, Lord! Rescue me; save me because of your faithful love.”

David had a foundational knowledge of God’s character so that no matter what trial he went through, he knew God was good.

“You are good and what you do is good,” says Psalm 119:68.

Abraham prayed big prayers for the people of Sodom, and even though he was bold in his negotiating, he was very humble in his request. Abraham interceded for people he didn’t know because he was burdened that they would be destroyed along with the wicked. We should all have

that burden. Abraham prayed to his covenant God to spare the city. He was so bold as to remind God that he should not destroy the righteous with the wicked, “That be far from you, shall not the judge of all the earth do right?” Wow, that’s some bold praying! Yet, in that boldness was the humility to say, “Lord, I am but dust; don’t be angry but let me speak once more.” Notice that not one time did God ever respond, “How dare you speak to me like that!” God was more than willing to hear Abraham’s requests and was quite pleased to have a servant like Abraham who would stand in the gap for people who were about to meet their end. You and I can pray like that. Abraham proposed that if 50 righteous people were found there that God would spare the city. Knowing Sodom like he did and not being confident of how many righteous people were actually there, Abraham then proceeded to negotiate his way from 50 down to 45, to 40, to 30, to 20, and finally to 10. Abraham asked for a lot, but in the end, it wasn’t enough. There is a lesson to be learned there: keep asking. Jesus said, “Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened to you. Everyone who asks, receives, and the one who keeps seeking finds, and to the one who continually knocks, the door will be opened.”

These prayer examples of the Old Testament heroes of the faith were given to encourage us. Jesus hears our prayers. Pray like the big guys: keep asking, keep seeking, and keep knocking because we are promised we will receive, we will find, and the door will be opened.

Ann’s Advice Dear Ann, My son was near the top of his sports team and being recruited by high-profile colleges and universities until an injury sidelined him for the entire season. This really affected him in many ways, not only physically but also in jeopardizing his opportunity to go to college. I am dejected, too.

Sincerely, College Career Dear College Career, I am very sorry to hear about your son’s injury. God does not promise us tomorrow, but God guides us if we let him. Making big plans is certainly essential to a successful life, but accidents are also largely unavoidable. I would love nothing more than for your son to have received a scholarship, and I understand that this could change the course of his immediate life. Hopefully, this will be a growing experience for him — maybe this hardship is a blessing in disguise that will prepare him for even harder trials he may someday have to face. Raising strong teens should be our goal. Encourage him to be strong and not to let him victimize himself into helplessness. I bet he is valuable and skilled outside of athletics, too. Consider contacting the college to inquire about other scholarships, or maybe the college would consider giving a partial scholarship. You never know until you ask! Hardships are a truly unfortunate part of life, and we must make the most of what is given to us. His future is just beginning, so remember there are many possibilities for him. Encourage him to pursue every opportunity, even the unplanned ones.

Ruble J. “Jim” or “Mack” Pratt, 94, of Scio, Ohio (Tappan Lake) passed away on Nov. 14, 2021 at the Truman House in New Philadelphia, Ohio. He was born on March 15, 1927 in Clarksburg, West Virginia, a son of the late Jesse and Olive Brinkley Pratt. He was an enlisted pilot in the U.S. Navy, serving in New Guinea. Jim was an engineer beginning his career at Goodyear Aerospace, moving on as a director at Loral, and retiring from Lockheed Martin. Jim and his wife, Vickie, own and operate Tubs ‘N Suds in Uhrichsville.

Preceding Jim in death was his first wife, Iris Riley Pratt, and brother Arden Pratt.

Jim is survived by his wife Vickie S. Augustine Pratt; five children Robert J. (Sheila) Pratt, Diana S. Pratt, Karen L. (Bob) Master, Paula J. Philpott, and Nancy L. Straw; three stepchildren Richard DeLand, Christienne (Patrick) Ruth, and Michael (Kristin) DeLand; and several grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Following his visit, we will light the town Christmas tree! We have prepared ornament kits for our children to pick up and decorate to put their own special personal touch on the tree. The kit will include a letter to Santa for the kids to fill out and drop in the Letter to Santa mailbox when they come to see Santa. Adults, as well as kids, are encouraged to attend. Christmas is for everyone!

We will create a Facebook event (Village of Holloway). If you can, please respond to the event “coming” or “interested” so we are sure we have plenty of treats and refreshments for everyone. We can also attach the Letter to Santa in case anyone would like to print it. Merry Christmas, everyone!

The tree decorating will be at 5:45 p.m. and the lighting at 6 p.m. The ornament kits can be picked up at the Holloway UM Church on Monday, Nov. 22 from 6-7 p.m. or at the Holloway fireman’s hall on Monday, Nov. 29 from 6-7 p.m. You can also contact Ruth Robertson at 740-968-4264 (after 5 p.m.) to pick up a kit at her house. Anyone and everyone is welcome to bring an ornament that you may already have and add your personal touch to the town Christmas tree! So whether you have little ones or not, you are invited to join in on the tree decorating and lighting.

Kids: write your letter to Santa and bring it to the Holloway fire hall when Santa is in town on Dec. 4 at 4 p.m. After the 4th, the special delivery mailbox will be located outside the fireman’s hall, so you will be able to send your letter in time for Christmas.

The Holloway UM Church has 2021 Christmas ornaments with a picture of the church from 1906 for sale for $10. This is part of the church’s 115th-anniversary celebration — what a great gift for yourself or a family member.

HOPEDALE

By J.P. Wilson This past weekend, the Hopedale United Methodist Church, along with volunteers from the Hopedale Youth Group, successfully collected enough food and donations to complete 27 baskets for those in need on Thanksgiving.

If you would like to participate in this worthy cause, you can donate nonperishable food items or monetary contributions to the church or mail in care of the church at P.O. Box 355, Hopedale, Ohio 43976. If you have questions or know somebody in need, please call the church at 740-

937-2844. The baskets will consist of turkeys, milk, eggs, butter, and flour. The church thanks you for your generosity in helping others and asks that God bless you and your family this holiday season!

I would also like to take a minute to talk about the Hopedale Youth Group. This notfor-profit organization has been around for about six years and is made possible by the hard work of Danny Skinner, Jenny Dulkoski, Ron, and Stacey Raber. The group, a collaboration between the Hopedale Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church, serves as a place where kids can get together, have fun, and work towards helping others in the community. Some of my favorite activities with the group include Christmas Caroling around Hopedale, Movie Night, and Vacation Bible School. The group also does a Christmas tree lighting and decorating near the Hopedale post office, spaghetti dinner fundraisers, and prepared chicken soup and sandwiches for elderly neighbors and those that were just not well enough to get out.

As we begin to get ready for Thanksgiving and then Christmas, please do not forget the reason for the season! Take time and enjoy your family. Play a board game or cards. I personally recommend Trouble or the Game of Life.

He is a graduate of Smithfield High School in their last year in Smithfield. What makes it special is having ties with the younger people of that time.

Jodee Straus of Smithfield, who has been part of the Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors for 15 years, has retired. On the board are Duayne Wetherell of Mingo Junction, public relations; Mark Nelson, chairman of the board, Wintersville; and Ken Perkins, vice chair of the board of supervisors, Mingo Junction. William Oscar Packer and his wife, Marty, received the conservation cooperator of the year award. Marc Maragos of the county General Health District was honored as well.

The Ross Township board of trustees hosted a retirement party for Charles Henry, who served as trustee for more than 20 years. More than 50 members of his family and friends and county officials were present for the event.

I was very pleased to see that J.P. Wilson is now one of the News-Herald’s correspondence page editors. He received honors for writing a newsletter for his 4-H Club each month and many other literary subjects. I remember J.P. performing a magician act at an event at the Hopedale American Legion several years ago, and he is great. I felt pleased that he wrote to tell me about winning his literary awards and other events. He is a member of a Jefferson County 4-H Club.

It was nice to see four of Buckeye Local’s top players be recognized by the Eastern District:

Cam McAfee, defensive back; Trey Hoover, junior linebacker; Ethan McHugh, defensive back; and Justin Driscoll, junior linebacker.

Harrison had Chase McClurg, with 55 tackles and four sacks; Jacob Cusick, hauling in 51 passes for 712 yards during the season; Nathan Bertolino, senior defensive lineman; and Hunter Russell, with 93 blocking and 36 knockdowns.

JCESC Help Me Grow, Friends of Puskarich Library, and the Scott Memorial Church worked together to continue “Operation Warm” in Harrison County, which has provided coats for children each year since 1994. The Help Me Grow home-visiting program is now part of the Jefferson County Educational Service Center. However, they still see families in Harrison County. Approximately 150 families will benefit this year from the program, with a total of 52 coats being picked up at Scott Memorial UMC on Wednesday, Nov. 10. Friends of Puskarich Library also passed out books for the children.

Across the river in West Virginia, a pair of teams will be competing in the quarterfinal round. In Class A (the smallest division), the Wheeling Central Catholic Maroon Knights are the lone local squad still remaining. No surprise here, the Knights have made the postseason their personal playground over the course of the past two decades.

WCC (8 seed) sees Gilmer County (16 seed), who upset the top-seeded Cameron Dragons 19-14 last weekend.

Clay Battelle, the only other OVAC school to qualify for the playoffs in Class A, lost

46-14 to Ritchie County in the opening round.

While there was no OVAC representation in Class AA, there is one OVAC 5A school still standing in Class AAA. The University (Morgantown) Hawks will kickoff with Cabell Midland in a four-seedversus-five-seed matchup this weekend. Wheeling Park, Morgantown, and Parkersburg South all fell in their opening-round games.
