CADIZ — The case against the 22-year-old Steubenville Catholic Central teacher and coach is now over. Corissa McCallister appeared in Harrison County Common Pleas court early Tuesday afternoon and pleaded guilty to one count of sexual battery, a third-degree felony. She will not serve jail time but could face up to six months in the Eastern Ohio Correction Center’s program, if accepted. Judge T. Shawn Hervey sentenced McCallister to two years of community-based control, which includes 80 hours of community service and holds 30 months of prison time in reserve. McCallister was arrested and booked on April 23, 2021, after a March 30 encounter with an underage student. After an athletic event outside the county, the meetup occurred at the Harrison County Fairgrounds; McCallister was supposed to drop off the student at home. Initially, McCallister faced two counts of sexual battery and one count of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. Judge Hervey made mention that while McCallister originally pleaded guilty, the actual sentence has yet to be hammered out. But after Prosecutor Lauren Knight repeated the offer for the record, McCallister, through her attorney Dennis McNamara, accepted the sentence as proposed. McNamara reminded the court that his client would be banned from

teaching ever again. He stated that his client had obtained a college degree and a teacher’s license by 21, with the intellectual basis to do so. But McNamara admitted that immaturity could’ve been a factor: “maybe not so much on a social or behavioral access as far as maturity is concerned.” “She is now an ex-teacher, and that’s going to be permanent...because of this conviction, which I consider to be a fairly significant sanction that they have imposed,” McNamara added, alluding to McCallister’s former school board. While speaking to McCallister directly, Hervey reminded her of the violation of trust she committed and hoped she could move on from this. “No sentence a court can give in a sex offense case can undo the crime,” Hervey told her. “And that’s the sad part about this. A decision made in haste, made in lust, whatever you want to call it, can ruin multiple lives for a long time, and unfortunately, that’s what’s happened here.” While explaining his rationale for accepting the sentence terms, Hervey highlighted McCallister’s lack of criminal history and an Ohio Risk Assessment (ORAS), showing her low risk for recidivism. With a conviction from a jury, McCallister could have served a maximum of 36 months in prison and received a $10,000 fine. The victim’s parents had been present but chose not to stay for sentencing, and according to Knight, they submitted a Victim’s Impact Statement. It was not read in court, however.

out the category. Michael Tran, a student from El Monte, California, and the carryover champion from June 21, nailed Gable’s $400 answer, but he ultimately fell short in Final Jeopardy! The clue took a jab at Gable’s ears, but that’s not the first time they’ve landed in center stage. Maybe an argument could be made that being compared to a sugar bowl, like in the “Jeopardy!” clue, is a step in the right direction. On other occasions throughout the 1920s and ‘30s, Gable was compared to an “ape” because of his prominent ears. Even more extremely, Gable had gotten his ears glued or pinned back to remove some of the extra flair they added. Producers tried, but nothing worked. Either way, it’s moot now; the King of Hollywood and a self-proclaimed “lucky slob from Ohio” ended up alright after all. Gable said he was in the right place at the right time regarding his career, but as for Jeopardy! contestant Michael Tran and his game show aspirations, the same can’t be said.

engulfed by the fire. And it required six hours of work from all the departments to stop it. However, no one was injured during the process. As for the cause of the fire, it was a pan on the stove. Unfortunately, the barn itself was over 100 years old. And while the building was insured, it was destroyed by the fire. The barn owners, John and Lena Clendening, hope to have a new home in about two weeks, with a little Amish help along the way.
