Drug charges cleared in Tuesday case

The Harrison County Court of Common Pleas saw a slow day on its criminal calendar last Tuesday because of several hearings being rescheduled. Judge T. Shawn Hervey presided over two cases with individuals enrolled in the Intervention in Lieu of Conviction Program.

Andrew Foreman, the coordinator for the program, was present and gave his report for both parties.

Speaking on behalf of defendant Brianna M. Charlton, who was originally indicted on drug-related charges, Foreman stated that she had come a long way since she first appeared

in court. “We could use her as a highlight of what this program is supposed to do,” he said.

Charlton spoke with gratitude for the support she received during her time in the program. “I don’t think I could have done it on my own,” she shared.

Because Charlton is employed and had completed almost all the requirements of the intervention in lieu of conviction program, including fulfilling her financial responsibilities, Foreman put forth the recommendation that the remainder of Charlton’s community service be canceled. Hervey agreed to this and granted her intervention in lieu of conviction, meaning that the charges against her were dismissed.

Foreman stated that Miller had generally been compliant and continued to pass her drug screenings. However, he raised a concern that she had failed to disclose a driving-related charge in another state.

Hervey explained to Miller why this could be seen as a red flag in her case. “We don’t expect people to be perfect,” he said. But “when you sign that paper saying you haven’t had contact with a law enforcement officer, and you have, that’s a concern,” he added.

Hervey told the defendant that failure to disclose details like this could be viewed by the prosecutor as casting doubt on her viability in the intervention in lieu of conviction program.

Scio talks trash removal, winter weather

At their meeting on Feb. 9, the Scio village council discussed tax questions, as well as issues with snow removal and trash collection.

Janeen Scott shared with the council members that a village resident who had purchased a home and started a business using a Roth IRA was requesting exemption from the village tax. Scott stated that she is reluctant to do this without the individual in question getting a letter from the IRS stating that it would be legal to do so. Otherwise, “what they’re trying to do is tax evasion.” Council member Trish Copeland made a motion that everyone in the village follow the tax ordinance as it is written, and the motion was seconded and passed.

Mayor Michelle Carpenter commended the work of village administrator Jason Tubaugh and Ron Thompson for the “wonderful job

they did getting the roads clear.” However, as Tubaugh pointed out, there are limits to how much snow can be removed, especially when the piles thaw and then freeze again — and when people have their cars parked in ways that impede plows. Carpenter stated that residents need to remember to get out of the way when snowplows are coming through — and ideally, just stay home and off the roads when the weather becomes severe.

As reported by Tubaugh, updates on ongoing projects include a postponement of the bid date on the water treatment plant and a request for an extension on that project. The initial planning has begun on the sanitary collection system for Hilltop Drive. The village has also received two additional deliveries of road salt.

Treasurer Heidi Trice, in particular, expressed concern about taking away income from small businesses and giving it all to a larger company.

The question was also raised about whether setting up a service for the entire village might be more trouble than it’s worth. ‘’You have to think about the village as a whole,” Tubaugh pointed out. “Think about the revenue coming in.”

They also touched on the ongoing problem of nuisance properties the village hopes to take down. They need to have a list of those properties, with photos, turned in by Feb. 16.

The council then went into an executive session to discuss the annexation project. The appeal on this is pending, and the hearing that was originally to be held this week has been rescheduled.

Hopedale’s gratitude During Hopedale’s February council meeting, member Donald Jochims explained that Claren Blackburn of Blackburn Funeral Home had recently gifted Hopedale a $300 check. During Winter Storm Landon, much of the funeral home parking lot and its entrance were blocked by snow. The village helped clear the entryway and the connected lot to allow grieving attendants to arrive. The funeral home was grateful for that gesture, and likewise, the Hopedale council was thankful for the generous gift.

Harrison seeing decline in COVID following omicron spike

Harrison County is seeing a significant decrease in COVID numbers, with fewer than 40 new cases reported between Feb. 2 and 8.

This indicates that January’s omicron-related spike is starting to come to an end. January 2022 was the record month for new positives in the county since the pandemic’s onset, with 659 cases through the month. Prior to that, even at the height of the delta surge in the fall of 2021, cases had not gone about 400 per month.

January also saw a record high in the number of hospitalizations across the state, with Jan. 11 being the peak date. On that day, over 6,700 Ohioans were in the hospital with COVID. As of Feb. 9, that number was significantly lower — less than 3,000.

County health administrator Garen Rhome is cautiously hopeful that this downward trend will continue and give the county a longer lead-in to the warm summer months when people spend more time outdoors, and numbers are likely to drop. “I’m hoping we can stay out in front of it,” he said.

However, Rhome stressed, this doesn’t mean county residents should cease to take precautions.

“We want to encourage people to stay vigilant,” he said. Since people won’t always see the effects of their actions for 10 days or more, he explained, it’s important to think beyond the present moment.

One number that has not changed much since January 2021 is the percentage of the hospitalized who are vaccinated versus unvaccinated. The statewide rate of hospitalized individuals who are vaccinated has risen only slightly since then to 5.9%. A little over 94% of those hospitalized with COVID since January 2021 have been unvaccinated.

When it comes to COVID deaths, over 95% of the decedents were unvaccinated.

Rhome also added that the heavy ice and widespread power outages caused by Winter Storm Landon did not pose any local issues for caring for COVID patients. “It might have been a different story in mid-January,” he said since there was a much greater stress on health care systems during that time — and higher numbers.

Freeport adds new council member

Camp Custer was set up in July 1940 near Cadiz, off Country Club Road where Warfel once stood. The cost of the camp, exclusive of the buildings, was about $400,000. The camp’s six acres held four sleeping barracks, one story high and 120 feet long; an educational building; a recreational building; a mess hall and kitchen; and other necessary facilities. The program was set up to soften the effects of the Depression by providing young men employment and a home. About 200 young men made up the complement of the camp. The group here helped plant

trees and assisted farmers with conservationtype methods. In fact, after the devastating 1913 flood, part of the blame was laid on the deforestation of this area. The camp was comprised of all Black men. This is a picture of their baseball team. The men enrolled were paid $30 a month. Of this, $22 was sent home to dependents, and $7 was given as spending money. Camp Custer was closed in June 1942, and its personnel moved to Kendallville Ind. Information comes from the files of the Harrison County Historical Society.

One-time only ‘Reimagining America’ exhibit coming to Fort Steuben The national traveling exhibit — “Reimagining America: The Maps of Lewis and Clark” — opened to the public on Feb. 7 at the Fort Steuben Visitor Center in Steubenville, the only time it will be on display in Ohio.

Developed by the Lewis & Clark Trail Heritage Foundation, the exhibit uses largescale reproductions of historic maps, photos, and explanatory text to show how America looked before the journey of Lewis and Clark and what it looked like after.

From 1804–06, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led an expedition from the Mississippi to the Pacific. Their primary goal was to reveal the geography of the West. Using cutting-edge scientific techniques and methods as old as humanity, they created a new portrait of America so persuasive we still recognize it today.

The panels feature seven themes, including “Making Maps the Native Way,” “Making Maps the Scientific Way,” and “Making Maps the Practical Way.” Of interest to educators and history lovers, the exhibit can be used as a springboard for programs on discovery, exploration, and map-making techniques.

The exhibit, which will run until March 4, adds another dimension to the permanent display and activities presented by Historic Fort Steuben on the Expedition.

“Since 2003, Historic Fort Steuben has provided opportunities to learn about this important part of American history,” noted executive director Paul Zuros. “Meriwether Lewis traveled down the Ohio River and stopped in Steubenville at the beginning of the journey, mentioning the city in his journal. We have an extensive display and selection of books on

the Expedition, and we are now part of the National Park Service’s Historic Trail and Junior Ranger Program. We recently added a thermoformed plastic tactile map that was designed to help Junior Rangers and other visitors with no or low vision perceive the Trail. The Expedition route and coastlines are recessed. A braille caption lists the states the Trail passes through.”

Visitors can find free booklets and maps with the display and purchase adult and children’s books on the Expedition and the NPS Passport books in the Fort’s Museum Shop.

been shoveled, and several street lights that are burned out. Village administrator Dan Snyder reported numerous village pole lights that are not working and many trees that need to be trimmed because of the ice storm.

Snyder also said that the village needs a new generator; they cannot find parts for the old one. Council is now taking applications for someone to help the village administrator out with the many jobs.

New water superintendent Jason Tubaugh is also getting the water plant updated. Water bills are currently due; a $15 late fee will be added for late payments.

Highway Department takes Huskies fall in OVAC semi on Landon’s ice

While the Harrison County Highway Department is used to dealing with ice and snow, Winter Storm Landon created extra work in hazardous conditions for the crews who were out keeping the county roads clear last Thursday night. Highway superintendent Randy Cunningham noted that the number of trees and big branches that had fallen on the roads created an added challenge compared to other recent ice storms.

Cunningham stated that the trees and branches began to be an issue around 4 p.m. on Thursday. The sleet started at around 4:30, and by 7, the roads were becoming dangerous.

The department is responsible for approximately 260 miles of road across the county; usually, if they’re just dealing with a normal snowfall of 3-6 inches, they can get the roads clear, plowed, and treated with their mixture of salt and ash within four or five hours. On Thursday, however, the department’s 11 trucks were out until around 1 a.m. the next day. Then they had to get up early, go right back on the roads again, and work 13 more hours on Friday. “Basically, the guys got very little sleep,” Cunningham said.

The county highway department cannot pretreat the county roads with brine as ODOT does on state roads, so instead, they use a mixture of road salt and cinders. Even after the salt dissolves, the cinders stick around and

provide added grip for tires.

Cunningham also explained that the salt and plow trucks they use are no better equipped to deal with ice than any other vehicle. Sometimes, he said, they’ll put chains on the tires, but this can slow down the process.

“Personally, I’d rather have 10 inches of snow than deal with ice,” he said. Driving on ice, the crews have to travel much more carefully and take their time.

While the falling trees and branches across the county were hitting many power lines, Cunningham said their crews only encountered one tree involved with a power line. In such a case, he said, the power companies have to take over for safety reasons.

So, what should Harrison County residents do to stay safe in an ice storm like Landon?

Cunningham stressed that it’s best to stay off the roads and just stay at home when there’s ice.

He also warned that residents with dirt or gravel driveways should be cautious about using salt on those surfaces; it can cause problems once the weather warms up. “If you put too much salt on a gravel driveway, it will turn to mud.”

This is why the highway department puts down stone, not salt, on gravel roads. And for private individuals dealing with an ice-covered dirt drive, it’s a better idea to use stove ash or grit for traction than salt.

Despite the extra challenges of this exceptional storm, Cunningham said, “Our guys worked hard, and we did a pretty good job.”

CLAIRSVILLE — Jonathan Vermillion poured in 26 points on John Jenkins Tuesday night in St. Clairsville, but ultimately, it wasn’t enough to push the Huskies past their rival Red Devils in the OVAC 4A semifinal matchup. St. Clairsville’s Ryan McCort and Avery Henry matched Vermillion’s stellar performance, and with McCort’s game-high 28 and Henry’s additional 23, it was more than enough to seal the 70-49 victory.

While the final score spells “blowout” in

the sports world, it may surprise those who weren’t in attendance to know it was a fivepoint ball game with 4:45 remaining in the third quarter. The Red Devils led 38-28 at the half as the Huskies struggled to keep pace on an ice-cold shooting night from the outside. In fact, Joenus Jones was the only Harrison player to connect on a long ball all evening, and that simply wasn’t good news for head coach Justin Clifford and the Huskies.

Huskies disassemble Toronto; lose to St. C

BY ED BANKS Harrison News-Herald Sports Writer TORONTO — Last Wednesday night in Toronto, the Lady Huskies were given an opportunity to shine, and the Dawgs of 100 Husky Way didn’t disappoint. Hungry for a win, the Huskies scored 62 points on their way to a decisive victory over the Red Knight hosts.

Harrison chalked up 23 points in the opening quarter as they used nearly every offensive possession to activate the scoreboard.

In the center of that offensive run was McKayla Dunkle. Over and over, she was fed by her teammates, and every shot that she threw up burst into sunshine. While trying to buck a recent losing slide, the evening reflected the early-season expectations of the team.

Every success is fueled by a winning formula.

And any good formula has a combination of

factors that contribute to success. In this case, consider Harison's Emma Fischer and Maddy Butler as two of those contributors. Those two are synonymous with passing. Their passes to Dunkle on the inside were again part of that winning formula. For the Huskies, that's where the Toronto win began.

The first quarter closed with the Huskies up 23-9. Deciding to toss a little something of their own, Butler and Fischer combined for 18 first-half points. Butler earned her share of the pot the hard way, driving inside, outside, and around the perimeter to lend six points. On the other hand, Fischer chose the high way.

She launched four missiles from downtown and buried all four — nothing but net. The Huskies had a three-dimensional game, and we all know what triangular shooting can accomplish.

score blossomed to 40-14. Dunkle went to the locker room with 22 points in her pocket.

Fischer owned 12, Butler carried six, and one of the team’s hard-working defensive players, Mackenzie Harbold, tossed in two for good measure.

But what is a game without defense?

Without good defense, you might as well have stayed on the bus and eaten your lunch.

During the game, Harbold, Kaily Banal, and Angi Ferri got tagged for ball harassment a total of nine times. All three played hard inside and out while pickpocketing and muscling the Red Knights all evening.

The closing 16 minutes went similarly as the first. The Huskies picked up 16 points over the third quarter and an additional six in the final period. Dunkle added 18 more points to her total during the second half; Butler had two additional points, and Kayln Ledger came off the bench and scored the final bucket. Due to the high rate of fouls called on the Huskies, Banal and Maddie Sedgmer got action early on in the contest. The duo served the team well while relieving the tired or foul-plagued players.

But in their next game — and last Monday — the Lady Huskies were matched against the visiting Lady Red Devils of St. Clairsville.

Early on, the Huskies played well over the visitors. They owned the lead at the end of the first quarter with an 8-7 score, and at the halfway mark, they were only down by two points, 17-15.

At the half, Dunkle had six points to her credit, Ferri had two points, Fischer had four points, and Harbold and Danica Rensi each had two.

The third quarter left the Huskies down by three points and a 27-30 score. After trading small leads in the fourth period, the Huskies fell 39-44.

The second half saw scoring by Butler with two points, Dunkle with two points, and Ferri with seven. She also owned a three-ball in her tally. Fischer and Harbold were also good in the second half. Fischer (top scorer with 10 points) added six points with a bonus field goal to her credit, and Harbold had seven points in the second half for a nine-point game total.

Despite a nice opening performance, the Husky reserve unit lost their contest 32-38.

Dunkle sets new school record

BY ED BANKS Harrison News-Herald Sports Writer The 2021-22 season will be senior McKayla Dunkle’s final campaign as a Husky; she’s set to graduate this spring.

But even after joining the 1,000-point club earlier this season, Dunkle added another benchmark to her resume. She will now leave Harrison Central with the record for scoring the most points in a single game.

The record fell on Feb. 2, 2022 against Toronto, where Dunkle scored 22 points in the first half and a remaining balance of 18 in the second to nab the record-breaking 40 points. The previous single-game scoring record was held by Kelly Polen when she scored 39 points against Conotton Valley on Nov. 22, 2002.

Husky bowlers dominate in 2 outings

BY ED BANKS Harrison News-Herald Sports Writer CADIZ — The Harrison Central bowling teams were dominant during their last couple of outings. Both the boys and the girls recorded good results over multiple teams.

In the most recent tri-meet, the Harrison Central boys’ varsity team scored 1,744 over Monroe Central’s 1,503 and Beallsville’s 1,578. The Husky high scorers were Chad Viers with a 235 and a 164, Davis Chrisman with 169, Kobie Hennis a 155, and Corey Hayes with 146.

For the girls’ varsity, Monroe Central rolled a 1,578, and Harrison had a 1,493.

The high scorers in that match were Aleyna Runevitch, who rolled 168; Cami Basich rolled a 142; and Lauren Best earned a 135.

In the junior varsity match, the visitors had health issues and could not compete.

However, in bowling for averages, Harrison’s high scorers were Holden Anthony with a 125, Emily Schmidli a 118, Aiden Hays a 108, and Caden Anthony a 104.

The second match results come from an outing held at the Rose Bowl Lanes against Linsly. The Harrison boys were once again on their game and scored 1,616 over Linsly’s 1,492. OBITUARIES Arleen Thompson Arleen Virginia Thompson, 77, of Cadiz, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2022 at the Meadows of Cadiz with her family by her side. She was born July 5, 1944 in Mentor, Ohio, a daughter of the late Denver F. and Lydia M. Nation Adams, Sr. Arleen was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her son Vincent L. Grabits and her brothers, George M. Adams, Denver F. Adams, Jr., John E. Adams, and Richard S. Adams.

Surviving is her two sons, Joseph (Paula) Grabits, Jr. of Adena and Adam (Miracle) Grabits of Cadiz; daughter, Rhenae GrabitsThompson of Cadiz; grandchildren: Joseph (Betty) Grabits, III of Bloomindale; Rhandii L. (Preston) Jones of Cadiz, Ashlei R. Beaird of Steubenville, James E. Lathem, Jr. of Cadiz, R. Michael (Lacee) Beaird of New Philadelphia, and Marc W. Wolf, Jr, of Akron; greatgrandchildren: Olivia, Jayah, Kamdon, Emma, Ava, Joseph IV, and Amelia.

Reverend Allen E. Rose Reverend Allen E. Rose, 91, of Mansfield passed on to his heavenly home Thursday, Feb. 3, 2022. He was 91 years of age.

He was born on Aug. 18, 1930 in Tippecanoe, Ohio, the son of Ora A. and Hazel (Cox) Rose, and he grew up in Deersville. He graduated from Freeport High School in 1948.

After graduating from high school, Allen worked for many farmers during the summer. He spent several years working on the loading crew at Clay City Pipe Company in Urichsville. In 1951 he was drafted into the United States Army, taking his basic training in Hawaii. He entered the Korean Conflict with the 45th Infantry Division.

He was wounded and received a Purple Heart. He attained the rank of Sergeant First Class. After being released from active duty, he served the remainder of his tour in the active reserves.

He answered God’s call into ministry in 1957. He accepted his first church appointment of four churches: Bloomingdale, Hopedale, Unionport, and Annapolis. The next year he was appointed to Hopedale and Bethel for four years. During this time, he furthered his education by going to Garrett Theological Seminary for four years and two years at Ohio University. He received his associate membership in the United Methodist Church. He also served the Salineville, Riley, Highlandtown charge for five years; Byesville Main Avenue for six years; Greenwich and Delphi for seven years; Butler Trinity and North Liberty for 10 years; and Kinsman for six years. He officially retired from full-time ministry in 1996. He then moved to Mansfield and was the pastor of Christian Care Giving at the Main Street United Methodist Church for 14 years, after which he retired again. Allen was in the ministry for a total of 53 years.

He was active in the EOEF camping program as a leader for many years, as well as the Conference Camping Program. He was also a Stephen Minister Leader. He put his heart and soul into his love for serving his God and sharing that with all the lives he touched. Two highlights of his many trips during his ministry were to the Holy Land and Greece in 1976 and an Amtrack train trip to California in 2009. These trips were given to him and Beverly as love gifts from their congregations. As a Korean War veteran, Allen was privileged to attend the Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C. in 2014.

Reverend Allen is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years who never left his side, Beverly; daughter Joyce (Bill) Hohman of Vermilion; son Steven (Mary Kirkpatrick) Rose of Granville; daughter-in-law Cynthia Rose of Walled Lake, Michigan; son-inlaw Richard Walters, II of Cambridge; seven grandchildren: Elissa Mallett, Bradley (Karlee) Walters, Brandon (Megan) Hohman, Kristin Hohman, Regina Rose, Nicholas Rose, and Benjamin Rose; five great-grandchildren: Peyton and Brady Mallett, Magnolia and Maverick Walters, and Clara Hohman; sister Kay Mizer; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Gary in 2015; his daughter Kathryn Walters in 2018; two sisters, Dorothy Huston and Alice McMillen; and a brother Donald Rose.

The funeral service giving glory to God for the life of Reverend Allen Rose will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Main Street United Methodist Church. The Reverends Doug Lewis and Jennifer Whitmore will officiate. Friends may call the hour prior to the service. Military honors performed by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Squad will follow on the church’s grounds. A graveside service will follow on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Patterson Cemetery in Deersville, Ohio.

Thomas Carter Thomas Harold Carter, 59, of Cadiz, Ohio passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Feb. 6 after a short battle with cancer.

Born Dec. 8, 1962 in Wheeling, West Virginia, Tom was a son of the late Jim and Janet McKee Carter.

He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Tami Lynn Carter; his son Kyle (Carly) Carter; grandson James Thomas (JT) of Cadiz; daughter Kaci Lynn of Dunlap, Iowa; brother Jim (Diane) of Wadsworth, Ohio; brother-in-law Chad (Deanna) Ankeny of Louisville, Ohio, motherin-law Sally Ankeny of Cadiz, father-in-law Ed (Vicky) Stark of Jewett, Ohio; three aunts: Marie McKee of Boston, Carolyn Greer of Cadiz, and Marsha Scott of New Philadelphia; uncle John Parkinson of Adena; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Tom was employed by the village of Cadiz for 37 years. He was the supervisor of the water and wastewater departments and recently had taken the position of the utilities director for the village. Tom was proud to hold a Class 3 license in water and wastewater and was well known

in the state of Ohio for his knowledge in both departments. He was also the operator of New Athens and Harrisville’s wastewater systems.

Outside of work, Tom was very active in his community, and his presence will be missed. He was the former scoutmaster of Troop 269 and led at least 10 scouts to obtain their Eagle Scout honors. Tom was the president of the Cadiz Girls Softball Association for eight years. He was a proud member of the Harrison County Fairboard, where he enjoyed eight years of his life as treasurer. Tom was an honorary member of the Cadiz Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, where he held ranks as high as assistant chief. Tom also belonged to the Grand Lodge of F.O.A of Ohio: Harrison Lodge #219 (37 years), Harrison Central FFA Alumni Chapter (five years), Harrison County Farm Bureau (17 years), Harrison County Pulling for a Cure (three years), Sons of the American Legion of Cadiz (35 years) and Fraternal Order of the Eagles of Cadiz (20+ years).

Friends may call on Friday, Feb. 11, 2022 from 11-4 and 6-9 at the Presbyterian Church of Cadiz (154 West Market Street) and again on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 1 p.m. Masonic service will be held on Friday at 4 p.m. and the fireman service will be held on Friday at 9 p.m. in the church. The family is being assisted by Clark-Kirkland-Barr Funeral Home, Cadiz, Ohio.

Everyone Wants a Good Inheritance

By Pastor Ken Staley Pleasant Grove & Harrisville United Methodist Churches PastorKenStaley@gmail.com So, you’re minding your own business, and one day you get a letter in the mail from an attorney. The letter says that your deceased, rich Uncle Earl (whom you never knew too well) thought very highly of you and left you an inheritance. The letter asks you to come to the reading of the will next Monday. Are you going? Silly question.

As Bible-believing Christians, we have an inheritance that far outshines anything rich old Uncle Earl could give us. The dictionary definition of inheritance is “received from predecessors, an inheritance of family pride.” The New Testament letters from the apostles say that because we are “in Christ,” we qualify as family to receive his inheritance. Ephesians Chapter One says, “In Him (Jesus) we have received an inheritance because we were predestined according to the purpose of his will.” The writer of the letter to the Hebrews said that Jesus is the mediator of a new covenant so that we might receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. And this isn’t an earthly inheritance subject

to probate, attorney fees, and phone calls from relatives who didn’t get anything from Uncle Earl. This is a heavenly, eternal inheritance that will be just as glorious thousands of years from now as it is today.

Peter’s epistle says Jesus has given us an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, unfading, and reserved in heaven for us.

The “us” he speaks of are those who have put saving faith in Jesus’ name, death, and resurrection as Jesus himself said. So, according to Peter’s inspiration from the Holy Spirit, a believer’s inheritance has four bedrock qualities. It is imperishable.

Unlike the food in your refrigerator when the power goes off for three days, our inheritance won’t spoil. It is undefiled.

Neither you, the forces of darkness, nor any person can defile your inheritance that God has made holy. Thirdly, unlike a red sign that has weathered in the elements for too many years, our inheritance can never fade. And finally, our eternal inheritance is reserved in heaven for us. God keeps his reservations, and we need not fear any cancelation. Who needs a letter from Uncle Earl’s attorney when we have letters promising an eternal inheritance from God himself? The reading of the will is as far away as your Bible and your desire to read it.

Valentine’s Day brings back memories of former Deersville postmaster Wilma Valentine Eberle. Her birthday was on Valentine’s Day. If she were still with us, she would be 103.

Congratulations to Roger and Melora Mencer on new great-granddaughter Kehlani Christine, born Feb. 4 and weighing six pounds and 11 ounces. Baby and Mamma Taylor are doing fine.

Sunday, Feb. 6 was Scout Sunday. Pastor Mike Cunningham recognized Noah Strickler from Troup 429. Noah will be working on his Eagle Scout project as soon as the weather gets better. Thank you, Noah, for your dedication.

Noah is the son of Tom and Amy Vansickle Strickler of rural Deersville. Also, Noah’s Troup 429 is selling raffle tickets at $10 each for a gun and merchandise gift certificate.

First place is $500; second place is $400 for a gift certificate toward a gun or merchandise.

Drawing will be at the scout meeting Tuesday, April 5. The gift certificate must be redeemed at Woodland Outdoors in Tippecanoe, Ohio.

And winners must be 18 years old and able to pass a background check; ID will be required.

Melvin and Gloria Allen just made a trip to Kessler Airforce Base to witness the ceremony for granddaughter Hillary Hanner and her husband Devin Hanner; both were promoted to gunnery sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps.

While there, they got to spend time with other family members and got to spoil great-grandson Landon and great-granddaughter Lavender.

Congratulations, Hillary and Devin. Thank you for your service.

On Monday, Feb. 14 at 10 a.m, the WoodyPaul Blanket Mission will meet in the Deersville United Methodist Church fellowship hall to make blankets for those in need of comfort.

A covered dish lunch will follow. Anyone who can tie a knot is welcome.

On Thursday, Feb. 17 at 6:30 p.m, the Deersville Community Theatre will be having an “Open Mic Night” at the Deersville General Store. There is a $5 cover charge that includes coffee and snacks. Musicians, storytellers, poets, and comedians are welcome. Come out and support the performers and the Deersville Community Theatre.

Saturday, March 1: Save the date. The Deersville Community Volunteer Fire Department will be having the first annual chili cook-off from 4–6 p.m. More info to come next week. Firehouse chili, help raise funds for the fire department, vote for your favorite, and just enjoy some great food. Sounds like a winner!

April 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m, will be the annual women’s retreat at the Deersville United Methodist Church. More info to come later.

On April 29, 30, and May 1, the Muskingum Chapter of the Buckeye Trail Association will be hosting its fifth Morelfest at the BTA Beall Farmstead on Beall Road just outside Deersville. Mark your calendar! There will be hiking, camping, music, guided morel hunts, fun, fellowship, and more.

The 28th annual dinner-auction for the Harrison Coal and Reclamation Historical Park will be on Saturday, May 7, 2022 in the Hopedale Volunteer Fire Department’s social hall. Doors open at 4 p.m., dinner’s at 5 p.m., and a speaker and auction will follow. Tickets are $20 per person and are available from any member or the Visitors Bureau.

The free clothes closet at the Christian Church will be closed during February due to the weather. They will reopen on March 7, 2022.

Last month, the Flushing village council welcomed two new members: Dave Coe and Tomas Spano. They joined Mayor Tom Bober and council members Sandy Twarog, Chad Sutton, Preston Eberhart, and Steve Ronyak.

Steve Ronyak was elected president pro tempore of the council.

The people of Holloway extend their deepest sympathy to the family of Charles Robert Eickleberry, 91, formerly from Holloway, who passed on Jan. 31, 2022. For those of you who have kids in scouts or if you were a scout yourself, you know how much fun this is! I miss building the cars with my dad, then racing them. SMITHFIELD

By Esther McCoy How did two weeks of February get by so fast? Today is the birthday of the tall gentleman known for his beard and stovetop hat: Honest Abe Lincoln. I remember seeing stories printed about his traveling through Cadiz Junction but not before a stop to dine at an eatery in that small town. I’m not sure if it was noted as a village. In that Harrison County area was an eatery where he and his work unit — today, he would lovingly call them “my posse” — had a meal before boarding the train again and speaking from the back to the village folks before moving on. What an impression that must have made on the Harrisonians. Today, there would have been a crowd of those who disapproved of his country ways, beard, and silk top. I just thought I would bring one of our presidents to light but in a likable, funny way.

The first president should be mentioned strongly, too, and that is George Washington, who had nothing better to do than to chop down his father’s best cherry tree. But then he was honest about it, and for that, people thought him to be quite honest in all his works.

We don’t see that side of politicians as much anymore. I just thought I would bring those up as I lack copy for the column this week.

Buckeye North Elementary School students are practicing their selling abilities with four flavors of the sweet treat of candy bars. There is peanut butter, almond, caramel, and I forget the last one. I purchased 18 of them to give to our church couples this Sunday in honor of Valentine’s Day. Lamont has to keep reminding me that they are not for me to sample. I could really go for those peanut butter ones.

Rachel Granitar sent me an email of her family making a sledding train down a steep hill on the Glenn farm during the deep snow.

There were six at the start, and apparently, two bailed out before the long trip ended. I won’t tell who the leary riders were, though. Josie, the Glenn family’s dog, and another puppy pal decided it would be fun to tag along in the back of the wagon train clear to the bottom and barking like the post office was on fire.

Well, this is not too long of a column, but a trip to the hospital on Monday night left me speechless. And something that left me in awe was the lavender hair of a beautician at the JCPenney salon when I went to get a perm. It was adorable, and I’d like to try that sometime.

Lamont says no.

2022 OVAC Championship runs conclude

HC Students of the Month

In the Class 3A contest, Fort Frye and Linsly raced to a 21-9 halftime score, with Fort Frye holding the edge. In the end, Fort Frye held on to a 42-28 win.

Up for the Class 4A contest were Union Local and Oak Glen. The Jets coasted to a 28-point lead after eight minutes (36-8) and increased that to 60-18 by halftime. At the close of the contest, the score ended 77-36 count, with the Jets claiming the championship.

Husky cheerleaders place 3rd at OVACs

BY ED BANKS Harrison News-Herald Sports Writer CADIZ — Last Saturday, the Harrison Central gymnasium was once again full of basketball championship hopefuls, parents, and fans from all over the Ohio Valley. The Ohio Valley Athletic Conference’s (OVAC) 2022 girls’ basketball championship was at hand — with five prizes (classes) up for grabs.

On deck for the contests were 10 teams that had earned their right into the tournament as the season’s best. While the opening contest was postponed for a 7 p.m. start time because of weather, Class 2A’s Monroe Central and Catholic Central stepped forward to kick off the matches instead.

The two teams played even through three quarters and were tied at 30-all with 1:30 remaining in the third. But the Crusaders got the edge going into the final quarter with a onepoint lead and 33-32 advantage as the game neared its conclusion. With 2:12 remaining, Catholic Central went up 46-37 and closed at

Morgantown and Wheeling Park became the day’s crowd-pleaser. The two teams split the regular season in wins — one of the contests even needed three overtimes to produce a winner. Just looking at a quarterly breakdown can show well the two teams played. The first quarter ended in a nine-all tie, the second ended 26-23 (Wheeling Park), the third ended 39-37 (Wheeling Park), and the final quarter ended 49-48 with Morgantown snagging the trophy.

In the 1A postponement-turned-nightcap, Cameron defeated Beallsville 66-32.

BY ED BANKS Harrison News-Herald Sports Writer WHEELING — The Harrison Central cheerleaders placed third at the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference 2022 cheering competition. The competition was held on Saturday, Feb. 5 at the WesBanco Arena in

Wheeling, West Virginia.

The cheerleaders’ thirdplace finish came in Class 4A and was also the fourth consecutive topthree placement in the OVAC event for Harrison Central. For the Huskies’ competition squad, the placement and the competition were the final ones of the year. The squads did a fantastic job, not only in competitions but also through their cheering and support at all of the Husky sporting events. All the cheerleaders, their coaches, and advisers are commended for a great presence this year. Cheerleaders involved in Saturday’s competition (pictured left to right) were Shyloh Utter, Kennedy Skinner, Julena Kovacik, Kaydence Vich, Gracie Rogers, Haley Dunlap, Kirsten Hercules, and Emma Tuttle.

triple, coupled with another bucket out of the guard, that brought the Harrison side of the gymnasium to their feet.

Vermillion had an aggressive quarter as well, adding five points in the eight-minute stretch to aid in what looked like a valiant comeback effort for a brief moment.

Once the Huskies cut the lead to five at 42-37, the Red Devils called a timeout to regroup. And regroup they certainly did. When the buzzer sounded signaling the end of the third, the Red Devils had put the finishing touches on a 14-3 scoring run. In the matter of roughly four minutes of play, the Red Devils had gone from fighting off an underdog to cruising their way into the 4A title game.

The lead swelled in the fourth, and the Huskies weren’t able to get the game back into single digits for the duration of the contest.

Hayden Cassidy finished with eight points, and Jace Madzia’s seven points rounded out the top scorers for Harrison. The Huskies

basketball program has now dropped all seven of their appearances in the OVAC championship bracket. The school’s lone OVAC title came back in 2007 when Donnie Madzia was at the helm; that was also the last year that the conference crowned their champions on paper instead of the bracket format that exists today.

Looking ahead, the Huskies were tabbed as the third seed in the East District Division III year-end tournament. This is good news for those not looking to travel far. First-round sectional play will start for Harrison on Feb. 22 when they host the 13-seed Sandy Valley Cardinals. Should they emerge victorious in the tournament opener, they would play again on Feb. 25 in the sectional championship.

Both of these games would be played on Harrison Central campus since the Huskies hold the highest seed out of the potential sectional round opponents: West Muskingum (5), Barnesville (9), and Martins Ferry (10).
