Conotton Valley BoE discusses behavioral programs at December meeting

LEESVILLE—At the Conotton Valley Board of Education December meeting, one district parent was present to discuss some issues with the board that she felt needed to be addressed. She explained to the board that she has a son in the first grade, who had encountered an incident earlier in the year, but she had been satisfied with its resolution.

However, she further explained that while resolving the issue, she and other parents in the district began to see a pattern of what she felt was unacceptable behavior.

School board president Chris Bower said that he felt it was something the school principals could better address. So elementary principal John Zucal stated that Conotton Valley is very much interested and involved in the behavior and interactions of both students and staff. Zucal provided information on the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program that Conotton is working in and suggested that Shelley Walker, coordinator of the “Leader in Me” program, would have additional information on the behavioral matters. Walker showed a thorough presentation of the Leader in Me progress at Conotton and how the program has grown in the school district since its inception. Walker explained that many of the ideals in the program are introduced as early as preschool.

Board member Rob Higgenbotham commended Walker and said that he felt Conotton is very much interested in the students’ behavior and stated that “our school is being proactive” toward matters such as bullying.

Bowerston village to accept digital utility payments

BOWERSTON—At Bowerston village council’s December meeting, members reviewed an agreement with Paystar, a provider, to interface with the village’s website to provide payment options for utility and park building rental customers.

The cost for the service is a flat-rate fee of $35 per month to the village, with service fees for use being added for payment of customers utilizing the option.

The council had discussed website payment options in the past and agreed that providing the service gives customers more freedom to make credit and debit card payments at their leisure.

The council unanimously approved the $35-per-month expenditure and set a goal to complete the project no later than March 31, 2022.

In other discussions, village administrator Bart Busby inquired of solicitor Jenna Hokes on the status of an active legal injunction regarding an easement infringement in the Conotton area. Hokes advised that the next pretrial is set for February 2022, but the village may cap off both water and sewer lines to the property now.

Harrisville council wraps up 2021

The Harrisville village council met for their final meeting of the year on Wednesday, Dec. 15. The abbreviated session didn’t feature much business, but the council did pass an emergency ordinance to retain solicitor Jack Felgenhauer for 2022. The rules were suspended, and the second and third readings of the ordinance were performed, securing Felgenhauer’s services for another calendar year. In addition to Felgenhauer’s retention, the council worked through regular reports as they quickly wrapped up the session. Their next meeting, and the first session of 2022, will be on Jan. 25 at 6 p.m.

Cadiz passes end-of-year flurry of emergency ordinances

Cadiz council held their last meeting of 2021 last Wednesday, and the members used the opportunity to pass several emergency measures going into 2022. The first emergency was for Ordinance 2021-39 and granted “all hourly employees a one-time bonus of $1,000” and also increased “the general fund and the sewer and water fund appropriations.” As is policy, the rules were suspended in the case of an emergency, and the second and third readings and a subsequent roll call vote were also performed; the motion passed.

The second emergency reading, Ordinance 2021-40, increased “appropriations in the general funds by $6,646.” Additonally, the ordinance also increased the “equipment fund

by $8,000 for the purchase of a snowplow.”

The $6,646 increase for the general fund will upgrade street lamps in the uptown Cadiz area. Ordinance 2021-41 was the council’s third emergency reading and focused on “amounts and rates as determined by the budget commission authorizing the necessary tax levies and certifying them to the county auditor and authorizing the acceptance of the same and ratifying all governmental actions pursuant to said determination of the budget commission for the year 2022.”

The fourth emergency ordinance, 2021–42, allowed the village administrator Brandon Ludwig to enter into a property purchase agreement as its agent. The village is selling the 324 East Market Street residential plot (currently an empty lot located at the intersection of East Market and Charleston Streets) to the Cadiz Community Improvement Corporation (CIC).

The fifth emergency, Ordinance 202143, also directed the village administrator to enter into a real estate purchase agreement with the Harrison Hills School District Board of Education for the around 8-acre plot that makes up the Mazeroski baseball field and its lower lots at Sally Buffalo Park. The school board is purchasing the baseball field, and the renovations are already underway with hopes to complete them in the spring.

The sixth and final emergency, Ordinance 2021-44, again authorized the village administrator to sign an agreement with the Board of Education of Cadiz to purchase the closed Westgate Elementary School property.

As mentioned, emergency ordinances suspend the rules to enable second and third readings in the same meeting instead of spreading them out over three sessions.

Geese hunting and jake brakes: Jewett dealing with noise issues

BY REBECCA BRATTEN WEISS Harrison News-Herald Reporting Journalist Several issues were on the table at the Jewett village council’s Dec. 16 meeting, including the recent EMS levy, noise disturbances, and potential repairs in the village.

Levies to finance EMS services were on the 2021 ballot for both the village of Jewett and Rumley Township. However, the content in the Jewett levy was worded differently than in the Rumley Township levy. Due to this difference in presentation, the levy for Jewett will not technically go into effect until 2023.

Nevertheless, the council passed a resolution to financially cover the year 2022, so residents can be assured that they will get the EMS services they voted for. The levy will need to be voted on again in 2024. Police chief Ryan McCann was present at the meeting to discuss the condition of police cars and the difficulty of acquiring a

Board of Elections discuss Ohio’s new congressional map

BY REBECCA BRATTEN WEISS Harrison News-Herald Reporting Journalist The Harrison County Board of Elections met on Dec. 15 to go over business old and new. They touched on the issue of the new congressional district map, discussed training for poll workers, and went over deadlines to get issues or candidates on the ballot. Some new business under discussion included revisions on the Election Administration Plan (EAP) and classes for Board of Election members through the Ohio Association of Election Officials (OAEO).

The Secretary of State has already advised the Board not to do anything regarding the new congressional map, as it has already been challenged by several lawsuits. The map was intended to take effect in February. As it stands, changes to the map do not make much of a difference for Harrison County, although Belmont and possibly parts of Guernsey may be affected. The Board of Elections, as well as both state and federal senate and representatives, remain the same, as per the new map. The Ohio Supreme Court has already heard oral arguments that the new map is gerrymandered and does not comply with regulations passed by voters in 2015.

The Board also discussed recent expenses and motioned to accept payments. It was noted that election month was expensive — and November 2022 is expected to be even more costly given that the gubernatorial race and federal senate and representatives elections will take place next year.

The Board of Elections recently received surveys from 2021 poll workers, and the general consensus is that the workers would like to receive more training on the usage of the machines and the poll pads that facilitate the voter check-in process. The Board talked about options for improving the training experience for poll workers and decided that offering more classes with smaller numbers of participants would allow for more comprehensive training.

Also under discussion was the budget for paying poll workers.

Board members will also be receiving additional training themselves thanks to classes in money, politics, administration, and other relevant topics offered via the Ohio Association of Election Officials.

Harrison County residents should be aware that the deadline for getting issues on the ballot for 2022 is Feb. 2. However, the deadline to get an issue on a primary is Dec. 27. This could pose a little difficulty, as the government offices will be closed on Monday the 27th since it’s part of the Christmas holiday. However, the Board came up with a solution to this dilemma and will have phone numbers posted on the office door, so anyone showing up Monday to submit issues at the last minute can call to have a BoE member officially receive the issues and verify signatures.

McCann also noted that truckers passing through the village have been notifying one another over CB radio when they see that police are stationed. This is why they keep violating laws against using their jake brakes — extremely noisy engine brakes — in residential areas.

Another noise nuisance brought up in the meeting revealed that someone had been shooting geese in the village as early as 6:30 a.m. It is legal to shoot in town, and the individual doing the shooting had permission to do so, but council members had not hitherto been aware that he was shooting so early. Since the recently passed noise ordinance covers late-night disruptions but doesn’t specify loud noises in the early morning, the council will need to deal with the geese-hunting noise differently.

As far as repairs are concerned, the council hopes to have some reconstruction done on Main Street for an inadequate retaining wall.

And there might be funds available for the work through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. The council noted that the program is more likely to award funds for larger projects that demonstrate significant improvements for communities, so sidewalk or retaining wall repair could be an option.

The council also mentioned that capital improvements for the village’s five- and ten-year plans should be suggested as soon as possible, so they can be recorded in the plans. The pump station control panels on Main Street, for example, need to be replaced because they’ve become corroded inside. Additionally, the valve on the cell between the two small wastewater ponds has severe rust damage and can’t be used — also another example of some of the village repairs the council wants to work on.

Harrison County’s COVID numbers dip but Ohio reaches new high

Sixty-three new COVID-19 cases were reported in Harrison County in the week leading up to Dec. 19, according to health administrator Garen Rhome. This is an 18% decrease from the previous week and brings the present county case transmission rate down to 418 out of 100,000. However, this case rate is still extremely high — over four times what is considered a high transmission rate.

The important thing to keep in mind, Rhome stressed, is that county rates are only a part of a larger picture. And the larger picture shows a continued spread of the virus. In fact, Tuesday, Dec. 21 saw a new record for the state of Ohio, with 12,502 new cases of COVID-19 reported. This marks the most cases ever reported in 24 hours in Ohio since the pandemic began. The previous high had occurred on Nov. 23, 2020 when 11,885 cases were reported.

Additionally, the hospital situation across Ohio is getting worse. Things are especially worrying in Region 5, immediately to the north of the county, and Region 2 in the Cleveland area.

Although the Harrison Community Hospital is not presently at risk of being beyond capacity, it is happening at other hospitals that county residents might depend on — not just for COVID care but for other medical emergencies and services. Many of those hospitals, Rhome said, are at max capacity, having to board people in the emergency department. Some hospitals have to do what is called a “diversion” — meaning that if you seek care for an ailment or call EMS, they will need to follow set protocols to find a hospital that can take you. So it may take longer for you to get to care, and you might end up in a hospital nowhere near your home. “People need to call the ER before they go,” Rhome suggested since some emergency departments

are overwhelmed.

County residents who want to understand more about how these hospital regions work can find a region map online and see which counties have been grouped in which region.

Vaccination remains the best defense against COVID-19. Without this protection, Rhome said, at-risk individuals will be especially vulnerable to symptomatic disease.

The vaccine’s efficacy is evident from the data: 95% of those hospitalized with COVID in the county right now are unvaccinated. And when it comes to COVID deaths, 95% of those are also unvaccinated.

Presently, this area is still experiencing the second round of the delta wave. The first wave happened in September. At that time, Harrison County had the worst month case-wise than at any other point in the pandemic. And now that the first few cases of omicron have been detected in Ohio, it is only a matter of time before the new variant appears in Harrison County. So it is important to continue to practice the mitigation efforts that are known to work.

“Mitigation efforts will prevent either your severe illness or someone you love’s severe illness,” Rhome said. “Our actions right now can prevent severe illness and death. Get vaccinated. Mind your symptoms. If you are symptomatic at all, do a home test. Stay home.

Don’t take COVID somewhere for Christmas.”

He also reminded the public that you don’t have to get the vaccine in your county of residence or your state. If it is available, and you are eligible, take that opportunity.

For those who have consulted with their physician and, under their advice, opted not to get the vaccine right now, Rhome said, he respects that decision. Nevertheless, he stressed, “You are an expert of one. Our data and our statistics, and case counts tell the story on a large scale. Your personal experience is not necessarily reflective of what’s happening to the public, to the population.”

The evening opened with the junior varsity Huskies falling in a 2-point loss and a score of 31-3. In that contest, the reserves were in command during the first two frames and led by scores of 10-6 and 18-14, respectively. However, following the third frame, the Huskies fell behind by 1 point and entered the final quarter with a 2223 score before being handed the loss. OBITUARIES Bernice Starcher Bernice L. Starcher, 96, of New Athens, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2021 at the Harrison County Home.

She was born Nov. 13, 1925 in Georgetown, Ohio, a daughter of the late Henderson and Mae Sargent Moore.

Bernice was a member of the House of the Shepherd in New Athens, Ohio. She enjoyed shopping, eating out, and dancing.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Starcher in 2003; her daughter, Sharon Simmons in 2021; six sisters: Martha Moore, Mary Stewart, Mildred Gilmore, Pauline Swann, Thelma Love, and Margaret Mercer; and a brother, John Duncan Moore.

Surviving is her son, Gregory Starcher of New Athens; a daughter, Jacqueline Starcher Rutan of Canton; three grandchildren who were the loves of her life, Brian Rutan of Midlothian, Texas, Brock (Alysann) Rutan of Waxahachie, Texas, and Paul Starcher of Dunkirk, New York; her son-in-law, Richard Simmons of New Athens and her former sonin-law, Dave Rutan of New Philadelphia, who both held a very special place in her heart; and a dear friend, Elta Mae Fletcher of New Athens, Ohio.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 21 from noon until the time of service at 2 p.m. at the Clark-Kirkland-Barr Funeral Home in Cadiz, with Reverend Pete Tuchek officiating. Burial will follow at the Olive Branch Cemetery, Harrisville, Ohio.

Donn Beckett Donn Lee Beckett, Jr., 79, of Cadiz, formerly of Smithfield, passed away unexpectedly on December 16, 2021 at the Harrison Community-Wheeling Hospital in Cadiz, Ohio.

He was born Feb. 3, 1942 in Wheeling, West Virginia, the son of the late Donn Lee and Dorathea Gallagher Beckett, Sr. He was a member of the First Church of God in Cadiz, a past member and master of Smithfield Lodge 182, F.& A.M., and a past member and secretary of the Smithfield Lions Club for 40 years. He joined his father and then took over Beckett’s Insurance Agency in Smithfield until his retirement.

Surviving is his wife, Mary L. Migliore; two brothers-in-law, Don (Barbara) Migliore and John Migliore; sister-in-law, Donna (Thomas) Migliore; three nieces Christine (Steve) Parker, Michelle (Rodney) Barnes, and Erin (Christopher) Burden; and a nephew, Shane (Bobbi Jo) Migliore.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family is being assisted by the ClarkKirkland-Barr Funeral Home in Cadiz, Ohio.

Ellen Yoho, 90, of Cadiz, passed away Friday, Dec. 17, 2021 at the Harrison County Home in Cadiz. She was born on Oct. 6, 1931 in Bellaire, Ohio, a daughter of the late Frank and Priscilla DeCorte Palumbo.

Ellen was a member of the Scott United Methodist Church in Cadiz and also worked at the former Consolidation Telephone Company office in Cadiz.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest “Ed” Yoho in 2011, and her sister, Florinne Mallernee.

Surviving is three sons, Mark (Kathy) Yoho of Hopedale, Michael Yoho of Cadiz, and Jeffery (Kim) Yoho of Martins Ferry; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2021 from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m. at the Scott United Methodist Church (817 East Market Street in Cadiz), with Reverend Ed Kovacik officiating. Lynie Eberhart Lynie Lorraine Eberhart, 58, of Cadiz, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2021 at her home surrounded by her family. Lynie was born July 27, 1963 in Ojai, California, a daughter of the late Melvin P. “Tut” and Lucille M. Stephen Dowdle and Julia Cessna Campbell.

Lynie worked at Bulldog Rack in Weirton, West Virginia.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Bonnie Eberhart, and her father-in-law’s companion, Beverly O’Hara.

Surviving is her husband of 37 years, Gary A. Eberhart, Jr.; her son, Brandon and his wife Jessica Eberhart of Cadiz and their children, Bransen and Braden Eberhart; four brothers, Mark Dowdle of Lebanon, Tennessee, Moe (Stephanie) Dowdle of Cadiz, Doug (Kimberlea) Dowdle of Glen Allen, Virginia and Bryan (Christina) Dowdle of Cadiz; her father-in-law, Gary Eberhart, Sr. of Cadiz; two sisters-in-law, Becky (Mark) Brandon and Jodi Eberhart Saffell, all of Cadiz; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Rose Ann McKnight, 89, of Hopedale, Ohio, died Dec. 18, 2021 at the Trinity West Medical Center in Steubenville. She was born Feb. 16, 1932 in Parlett, Ohio, daughter of the late Domenick and Anne DeCort Zullo. Also preceding her in death were brothers Robert and Joseph Zullo, an infant sister, and greatnephew Christopher Zullo. Rose graduated from Wayne High School in 1949, became a telephone supervisor with Bell Atlantic in Cadiz with over 25 years of service, and was a member of the Hopedale Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Surviving are nephews, Michael Zullo, Justin (Amber) Zullo, and Ryan Zullo, all of Steubenville and Bob (Stephanie) Zullo of Zanesville. Many great- and great-greatgrandnephews and nieces also survive. As per Rose’s wishes, there will be no visitations or services. Thomas Amos Thomas “Tom” Amos (1948-2021), age 73, of Dover, formerly of Scio, Ohio, will be dearly missed by his family and friends after passing away the morning of Monday, Nov. 22, 2021 at the Trinity West Hospital in Steubenville, with family by his side and an angel to fly him home to Heaven, after complicated health problems relating to the COVID virus.

Tom was born the second son of the late Sanford and Edith Amos. “Tommy” grew up living on Main Street in Scio and spent much of his childhood at the family-owned Scio Livestock Auction with his beloved grandparents and extended relatives. He often shared fond memories of the idealized life he experienced growing up with his loved ones, including family dinners, lively poker games, and happy holiday affairs. He attended Scio Elementary and later graduated from Scio High School, home of the Panthers, in 1965.

Following graduation, he went on to attend Computer Programming Community College in Columbus and joined and served in the U.S. Air National Guard from 1965-1971. His 121st Tactical Hospital Unit was activated to South Korea to support the Vietnam War in 1968.

Upon discharge, he returned to employment at TRW, Inc. in Minerva. Following this, he and his wife Carol purchased and operated the Scio Lawson Convenient Store franchise before retiring and moving to Dover to be closer to their children.

He grew up attending the Scio Presbyterian Church and later became a member of the United Brethren Church of New Rumley, where his best friend, Fred Battles, was pastor.

Tom was a devoted Christian that faithfully prayed the Lord’s Prayer and Serenity Prayer at the start of each day and considered it a privilege to know the Lord as his personal Savior.

He had many hobbies and personal interests that he loved doing to pass his time. As a child, he liked fishing, playing baseball, racing gokarts, playing pranks, and telling jokes. Later he became fond of boating and water skiing at Tappan Lake, raising bird dogs and training them to hunt grouse and pheasant, playing table foosball, shooting pool, and playing weekly poker games at various clubs. He was an avid trap shooter, gun collector and liked reloading his own ammo. He spent 50 years of his adult life attending weekly trapshooting events at local sportsman’s clubs.

Tom was married to his lifetime friend and wife of 54 years, Carol Jean Falls Amos, whom he affectionately referred to as “his Lady.” In addition to his wife Carol, surviving are his two daughters, Mandy (Brady) Shaffer and Heidi (Mark) Fowler, and his beloved grandchildren Brandon and Tanner Fowler and Tate and Scarlett Shaffer. Preceding him in death was his older brother Scott Amos.

A private family funeral will be held at the Perrysville Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Koch Funeral Home in Scio has been entrusted with his arrangements (www. kochfuneral.com).

Leonard Stewart Leonard J. “Lenny” Stewart, 79, of Jewett, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born July 18, 1942 in Ames, New York, a son of the late James and Evalyn Kail Stewart.

Lenny was a self-employed farmer and a member of the Harrison Hills Church in Jewett, the UMWA, and Hopedale American Legion.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Dunlap Stewart; a son, David Stewart; and a brother, James Stewart.

Surviving are his son, Carl (Jessica) Stewart of Jewett; two daughters, Renee (William) Ralston of Rayland and Melissa (Robert) Hursey of Jewett; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard Stewart of Mishawaka, Indiana; and two sisters, Donna McGray of Jewett, Ohio and Janet Wells of Bellview, Ohio.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family is being assisted by the ClarkKirkland-Barr Funeral Home in Cadiz, Ohio.

I hope you can attend Christmas Eve and Sunday services and hear about God’s big doover. Adam and Eve made bad choices in the Garden, sin came into the world, and fellowship with God was broken. What’s a holy God to do? In the most lavish display of love ever known, he sent his only son to be born of a virgin so the sinful bloodline could be cut, to live a perfect, sinless life, die in our place, and present us holy to the Father when we believe in him (and him alone) for a forgiven eternal life. The apostle Paul wrote, “The first man, Adam, became a living person, but the last Adam — that is, Christ — is a life-giving Spirit. What comes first is the natural body, then the spiritual body comes later. Adam, the first man, was made from the dust of the earth, while Christ, the second man, came from heaven.

Earthly people are like the earthly man, and heavenly people are like the heavenly man.

Just as we are now like the earthly man, we will someday be like the heavenly man.” The Big Do-Over — Nothing compares.

As you celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the only savior, this weekend, remember the words of Mary to Elizabeth when she said, “My soul magnifies the Lord.” A magnifying glass brings things closer and makes them bigger. Jesus is bigger than our problems and bigger than our fears.

1969. Not every county in Ohio has its own hospital facility, Phillips pointed out. Given that Harrison County is the fifth-smallest county in the state, it is especially impressive that its citizens have continued to support the hospital so that residents have local access to needed and often life-saving services. “If we weren’t here, what would it mean for the community? Sometimes, life or death.”

He noted, as well, that when people are considering relocating to a community, two of the primary amenities they look at are the school systems and access to health care, so keeping the hospital open and thriving is also important for attracting families and individuals to the area. Additionally, the hospital is one of the largest employers in the county.

While the Harrison Community Hospital can’t provide patients with all the health services they might require, it has labs, emergency care, and provides an easy in and out, especially for those who need to be moved to larger facilities for further care.

And with all the oil and gas industry activity in the county, as Phillips mentioned, it’s vital to have health care and emergency services readily available in case of an accident.

The work of the Community Hospital Auxiliary in support of Harrison County’s hospital depends on generous and ongoing community involvement. “We are in need of volunteers at the hospital and to support the Auxiliary,” Klingler stated. When asked what kind of work a hospital volunteer might expect, Klingler listed filing, physical therapy, and cafeteria work as just a few possible tasks. “But if someone has an interest, tell us, and we’ll find a job for them.

It’s such a satisfaction when we’re able to give back,” she added.

Several attended the cantata at the Sherrodsville United Methodist Church on Sunday evening.

The Conotton Valley Hall of Fame will be held on Jan. 22, with those honored between the games with Tuscarawas Central Catholic at 1 p.m. and the banquet at 4:30 in the cafeteria.

Tickets are available at the school for $20.

The Conotton Valley bowling team came out on top at the Muskingum Invitational on Saturday, with Daphne Studer as the top scorer for the girls and Makenzie Willoughby in second. Bobby Brennan was tops for the boys.

The boys’ basketball team beat Newcomerstown 41-29 and lost to Tuscarawas Central Catholic 75-40, Strasburg 57-27, and Toronto 38-46.

The girls lost to Malvern 55-6, Newcomerstown 49-14, and East Canton 6016. The junior high won their games.

Christmas eve services will be held at 7 p.m. at Trinity U.M. Church. All are welcome.

DEERSVILLE

There were Christmas gifts handed out and ended with singing “We Wish You A Merry Christmas.”

On Jan. 2, TJ’s Gas Station in Freeport will change to winter hours: Sunday 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday thru Thursday 6 a.m. until 8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 6 a.m. until 9 p.m.

Due to EPA violations, the Freeport water department men will be exercising the water valves on the water lines every four months.

Dear Ann, Christmas is not the same without my mom. She passed almost a decade ago, but I can’t seem to shake my sadness during the holidays.

How do you suggest managing those feelings that accompany the absence of a loved one no longer with us?

Sincerely, Heartache Dear Heartache, I personally understand the difficulty of yearning for the special person who will no longer fill their seat at the table. Everyone grieves differently, especially the first year, sometimes every year thereafter.

It is imperative that you don’t give up being with others because you are struggling. How easily sadness isolates a person into a hermit state. You feel as though staying away is best, but in reality, it is very detrimental to you and those who are close to you. I have found the best thing to do is find others who may be hurting and do something to cheer them up or help brighten their day somehow. Seeing the smile on someone else’s face brings joy to you. This will give you a purpose when you can’t find one in the sadness. Although you must grieve to overcome the loss, it is much easier to do when you focus on serving others while you are struggling. Make a point to talk with family about the loved one who is not there. Do not forget the good times you had together— just keep enjoying the memories. For the Christain, there is a resilient hope of peace and rest. For those who are not grieving, please come alongside those who are struggling and hold your own family members close while you have them.

the few weeks leading up to Christmas Day in 1914, there were a few unofficial truces on the Western Front. French, German, and British soldiers crossed trenches to exchange seasonal greetings and talk. In some areas, men from both sides ventured into no man’s land on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to mingle and exchange food and souvenirs, while others played football and other games. These men putting aside their differences at this time of the year seems incredible to me today. I would like to wish Don “Jock” Jochims a happy birthday, and I hope everybody has a good week and gets ready for the New Year. By Esther McCoy It is here. The day that children wait for 364 days a year: Christmas. It came with a rush for me as I had let some yard work go until December. It had been so nice to work outside that I spent time in the yard more than cleaning and decorating the house. But Lamont and I have the tree and decorations up, and I followed a good housekeeping rule: “Put only half the decorations usually used on the tree, and it will show off the ornaments and homemade mementos of yesterday.” It worked.

I got compliments from my daughters-inlaw and a Bodnar Florist bearer of a nice live arrangement from Stella and Dennis Puskarich.

We had the McCoys celebration this past Sunday, and it went well. My nephew tested for COVID, so that family was not here, and they were missed. And his son is quite a hunter. The 11-year-old went deer hunting with his dad for the first time and bagged a deer. They share the meat with places in need in Bolivar.

I missed being in the Brilliant Christmas parade this year. Therefore, I had large bags of bite-size Twix, Snickers, peanut butter cups, and red licorice. I made gift bags with the candy, cereal bars, pepperoni sticks, and an ornament bearing a door that opens to find green stuff that was not pine. They were trading candy back and forth, and it was fun to watch.

With the winter ready to deliver colds and coughs, I found some remedies in “The Old Farmer’s Almanac” that might help without running out to the pharmacy: lemons, oranges, and apple cider are considered to be cold remedies. For chills, take ginger root tea. Eat lots of hot, spicy food, like chili, to clear the sinuses. To treat sore lips, go to bed with honey on them. Now here is one I hope I never have to ingest. It is for a chest cold or bronchitis.

Boil a while onion, let it cool a bit, and drink the onion broth. To make it taste better, add a spoon of butter and salt Here is wishing a great holiday season to all.

And don’t forget those in nursing homes, where we delivered homemade Christmas cards and fruit to the veterans who are residents of Gables. And my brother-in-law is one of them.

BY SAMANTHA MCINTOSH Harrison Central Contributor The high school visual art department, led by Mr. David Lackner, displayed student work during a holiday ceramic and pottery show. The students have been working over the past several weeks on the pieces, some sculptural and some functional. And many of the students plan to give the projects away as Christmas presents. The pieces are food-safe and either hand-built or wheel-thrown. Students could choose between high-fire stoneware and glaze or low fire. If a high fire, a traditional Japanese-style glaze was used. The art room has a kiln, shown in the photos, that is utilized in the pottery-making process. Three of the largest pieces created are shown in the photo.
