What to look for when buying a used ATV or UTV P.4

Shopping for a used ATV or UTV is not only fun and exciting, it can be a good way to save money rather than buying a new model. This is a pretty different process than shopping for a used car, because a recreational offroad vehicle serves a much different purpose than a car.

The trouble with shopping for used off-roader is that it's a bit of a mystery what it was used for in its previous life (or lives). Was it gently used on a campground? Was it ridden hard through the mud on a regular basis?

It's hard to know for sure, but looking for a few things can give you a hint as to how hard it was used before.

One of the biggest things to look at is the condition of the frame. Usually, a dealer won't try to sell a used ATV or UTV with a damaged frame, but it's still something you should inspect pretty closely, whether you're working with a dealer or a private seller.

You should even do some crawling underneath to look at the condition of the bottom of the ATV or UTV, since the bottoms of off-roaders often take a beating depending on how they're used.

If the frame looks good, the next thing you'll want to know about is the engine. One of the nice things about ATVs and UTVs is that they usually have small, simple engines in which there isn't much that can go wrong.

usually a cheap and easy fix. The best way to get an idea of the condition of the engine is to let it idle for a while and, of course, take it for a ride. If it idles well and behaves normally in your test ride, it's likely a good engine.

When shopping for any used vehicle, it's a good idea to take a look at the tires. Tires aren't cheap, and the condition of the tires of a used vehicle could cause an unpleasant extra expense. Off-roaders are no different, especially if you're going to demand a lot from the tires in off-road conditions.

On top of mechanical things to look out for, it's just as important to look for features and characteristics you want in a recreational off-roader. If you're torn between an ATV and a UTV, ride both to figure out which one you prefer. Maybe you'll find some features you didn't know you couldn't live without.

1920s Windsor Stove This steel-and-iron Royal Windsor, manufactured on behalf of Montgomery Ward, sold for around $80 in the 1920s. Back then, the appliance served as a versatile tool, since cooks could power it using either wood or coal. Two small doors on the lower left hide the fuel chambers, a row of bun warmers grace the top of the piece, and a copper-lined box for heating water hangs on the right. Quality antique stoves with restoration potential command up to $2,500 (fully updated examples, converted to gas or electric, can bring as much as $9,000).

This stove may show some rust on its nickel-plated trim, but the crisp blue enameling makes this a particularly desirable item. What It's Worth: $2,000.

The Astra Model 400 was a Spanish service pistol produced by weapons manufacturer Astra-Unceta y Cia SA, from 1921 to 1946. Approximately 106,000 units were produced. It was the standard issue sidearm in the Spanish Army during the Spanish Civil War and also saw service in Germany during World War II. The original design was chambered in 9mm Largo, but later variants would be chambered differently so as to better fulfill different military ry needs. Recent importation has depressed thhe price of these guns. Note: Any with Nazi proof marks are worth 100 percent premium, but caution is advised.

Five collectible SUVs to consider before they hit the stratosphere A

long with vintage trucks, early versions of SUVs are becoming popular collectibles. And as their popularity grows, there's no doubt that their values will escalate, too. However, there are plenty of collectible vehicles available that haven't hit the price stratosphere.

Below is a list of a few of those SUVs that are popular, yet still affordable.

1946-1949 Willys CJ-2A Following WWII, Willys-Overland saw a market for a civilian model of the MB Jeep that was said to have won the war. Based on the MB, the CJ-2A received a tailgate and a spare tire mounted on the side of the body. The CJ2A was also the beginning of the trademark 7-slot grille that all Jeeps retain today. Production of the CJ-2A reached over 200,000, one of the reasons why there are plenty of surviving examples.

A flathead, 4-cylinder engine powered the CJ-2A, making them slow but reliable. A rare model was built with

a 3-on-the-tree shifter, which was rejected by returning solders -- they wanted a true Jeep with the shifter on the floor. Be aware, these Jeeps were susceptible to rust, so check diligently. Also, a plethora of farm implements and industrial accessories were available, so if you find one with these implements, they're an added bonus.

1960-1980 International Harvester Scout The first International Harvester Scout was introduced in 1960, with production running until 1980. Though IH made plenty of special editions, seven iterations of the Scout were built throughout the years. These 2-door trucks were built with removable roofs featuring a fulllength cab, a half cab or a soft top.

As the popular Blazers and Broncos become scarcer, the IH Scout is starting to gather a following. It was known as rugged, yet a bit more sophisticated than the Jeeps of the day. If you find one with the original buildsheet, you found a bonus, as this makes finding replacement parts much easier.

1969-1972 and 1973-1991 Chevrolet Blazer The Chevy Blazer is here because there are so many different variations of this vehicle that a model is bound to quench your collector thirst. The first iterations ran from 1969 to 1972, and to some those are the only true collectibles. But there are plenty of 1973-1991 models available, and they fit just as well into the collectible offroad 4-wheelers.

Following the first year of production, the Blazer was available in both 4-wheel drive and 2-wheel drive. Since the Blazer was essentially a shortened pickup, replacement parts are easily available. Four engines were available, so there are many variations. Though some models have moved into the double digit price point, there are

plenty of Blazers well under the $10,000 mark.

1966-1977 Ford Bronco We've included the early production of the Ford Bronco in this list, even though it's one that has reached the higher price range because it was conceived as a competitor to the Jeep and the Scout. Like the Blazer, the Bronco offered more comfort with excellent off-road abilities. It has recently garnered lots of attention from collectors, but there are still affordable examples out there to be found.

1976-1986 Jeep CJ-7 Because the CJ-5 was determined to be too small for real pickup work, Jeep stretched the body and wheel base into the CJ-7. Though it wasn't wildly popular at first, there were a lot of enthusiasts who liked the stretched configuration -- plus, it was a Jeep. The CJ-7 was available with a removable steel roof and more creature comforts. As with all vintage vehicles, watch out for rust.
