Silver Spade Ambulance District rejected by voters By JD LONG

jim@harrisonnewsherald.com HARRISON COUNTY – The last bastion of a Harrison County paid fire department, which is Hopedale, could be on their last leg. That leg is to last till the fall of 2021 and there is time but after Tuesday’s election the voters said no to a tax levy for supporting the Silver Spade Ambulance District (SSAD). This would cover the townships of Cadiz and Green and the village’s of Hopedale and Cadiz. Hopedale Fire Chief Mark Marchetta said they could still be on the November ballot but time is running out. Tuesday’s results showed the vote came up short by 134 (635-501). “Even if it would have passed the money wouldn’t come in until May of next year,” Marchetta explained. “If it passes in November the money will still come in May of next year so, it will still be okay but we’re running out of time.” Marchetta said he will apply for the federal grant, Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) again. But if that’s

what his department has to rely on and they are awarded it once again, the wait on the funds could be years. “There’s absolutely no guarantee and it usually takes five years before you can get it a second time,” Marchetta stated. He added that when the grant has been reawarded there have been delays in receiving the funds. “The whole idea with the grant is it’s start-up money to work towards a paid service, a longtime paid service,” Marchetta explained. “The federal grant is not just going to continue to give you money to staff when you’re supposed to take care of the long term payment through levy or whatever, on your own. It’s your responsibility.” He called next year’s chances “slim options” for even attempting a May ballot a stretch. He said even if it passed next May they would have to wait for the following year to receive the money and Marchetta was not optimistic for survival. Marchetta expects staff losses when the grant money runs out as they’ll seek other places of employment. He likes the group he has and is confidant they’ll be able to

find work elsewhere. As far as expecting a mass exodus he expects his currently paid crew to find other work if there is no way to pay them after the grant runs out next year. “We will do our best to answer calls as a volunteer’s system but we all know that that’s not working anymore,” Marchetta said where he added that they have volunteers from various sections of the county with Bowerston being one. He said that someone who is a volunteer from that area is not going to answer a call in Cadiz as a volunteer. The next scheduled SSAD board meeting is May 18 at 7 p.m. at the Hopedale firehouse where they will decide “how they want to proceed” after dissecting the data from the recent election results. The SSAD levy issue can be placed on the ballot three times, according to Board of Elections Deputy Director Abigail Klamert. "A levy that does not get a majority vote can be placed on the ballot again in the next election," she said this week.

The proposed Silver Spade Ambulance District took a hit on Tuesday’s election where it was voted down by 124 votes. Hopedale Fire Chief Mark Marchetta said time is running out but they will more than likely place the issue back in the ballot for November. The grant money runs out in 2021.

HARRISON COUNTY – The long awaited Imperial Networks, which was officially formed on July 23, 2019 has finally gotten off the ground, though, plans and actual work had begun well before that. Tappan is where they are live for one of their tower locations with plans for three more to come. A description on the official website (www.imperialnetworks.com) of what they’re about states in part that they are “providing a bridge over the broadband access gap in very rural Appalachian areas and beyond that have been left behind by the current large broadband

players.” There are three partners, Mike Cope as chief executive officer, James Coffelt as president and Larry Bertolino on the front lines as their chief technology officer. And there was a time when they felt they were closer to being ready than they actually were, that is until state regulations brought a sledgehammer to the project. Bertolino said some of those regulations made sense but others he felt may have been a bit suffocating to put it mildly. “I’m good now [with] everything I’m now on top of all the muck and the grime and society and the state and

CADIZ – Not many details to provide but according to Strategic Communication Specialist of the Northern Ohio District & Ohio Valley District of the U.S. Postal Service Naddia Dhalai, the new Cadiz Post Office “will be open and fully

operational” on Monday, May 4. A grand opening is being planned but no details on when that would occur, she said. The current temporary post office by Westgate will be moved and used again where it may be needed as it was in Cadiz, Dhalai explained. Earlier in the week Dhalai said phone and internet were still being worked on. Harrison Hills Church served the area businesses with donuts in commemoration for their efforts in staying open and being on the frontlines against the virus outbreak. Two of the many businesses included Custer Pharmacy and Dollar General.

The gesture was in appreciation for staying open to serve the public in this time of need and where risk is fairly high for people out there dealing with the public. And if it can motivate others to do the same then that’s a nice thing too.
