CADIZ – Wednesday morning Harrison County Health Department Administrator Garen Rhome gave what has now become a weekly update on the coronavirus situation in the county during the Harrison County Commissioner’s meeting. And as of Wednesday, Harrison County still has zero confirmed cases of COVID-19, which makes Harrison one of only 17 in the state that are free from any confirmed cases. Rhome stated that Harrison County
We expect that the virus is in the county. We presume that it is and we need everybody to behave like it is. Harrison County Health Dept. Administrator, Garen Rhome
has received $30,000 of its share from the $15.6 million Ohio received from the federal government to battle the virus. He said the figure of $30,000 is the minimum that any one health
department could receive. “So, that allows us to have some flexibility in spending specifically for coronavirus response if we need some technology, if we need any sort of
infrastructure…so it’s some money from the feds passed through Ohio to the locals,” Rhome explained. Rhome stated that he felt the virus was probably in the county but again, nothing has been confirmed as of yet. Also noted were three counties in close proximity to Harrison: Guernsey, Noble and Monroe counties also have reported zero confirmed cases. “We expect that the virus is in the county,” Rhome explained. “We presume that it is and we need everybody to behave like it is. Pretend like you’re a potential carrier. Pretend like the guy who is sitting next to you
is a potential carrier…and keep that social distancing up.” Rhome also noted the earlier announcement of schools canceling now until May 1 while noting that the stay-at-home order was not extended at the previous day’s governor’s conference. Rhome said he expects that also to be extended, though as of Thursday, Governor Mike DeWine had only suggested it extend beyond the current date of April 6. And as has been the case the past two weeks where Rhome spit out U.S. and

HARRISON COUNTY – A suspect in the murder of Lori Storie whose body was found in Tappan Lake last month was arrested last Thursday night. Larry Smith, 63, of 150 County Line Road, Hopewell, was the man arrested for the murder. Smith is from the area where Storie lived in Zanesville but works in Harrison County for a company that does contract work for AEP, according to Harrison County Det. Robert Toker. Smith was picked up on U.S. 250 near Tappan Lake where Storie’s body was found. At the time he was in his work vehicle and taken into custody without incident. He was also arraigned last Friday and held on a $2 million bond after being charged with the unclassified felony of murder. Det. Toker explained that through witnesses, electronic media and other means a search warrant was obtained in Muskingum County where evidence was collected. Toker said Ohio BCI was on the scene as well. He said evidence is still being analyzed. No exact cause of death has been released as of yet but Storie was beaten badly and believed to have been killed somewhere other than where she was found, possibly outside the county. Smith’s next court appearance is scheduled for April 6, at 3 p.m. Harrison County Prosecutor Owen Beetham explained that in a continuous crime jurisdiction is given where the crime ended as “proper venue.” Samuel Farnsworth, 48, of Bellaire who is a person of interest in the death of Sherry Lynn Shrieve, appeared in Harrison County Court two weeks ago and was sentenced on a probation violation for domestic violence. Shrieve’s body was found along Harrison 36 in early March. Farnsworth pleaded guilty to the violation and was sentenced to 185 days in jail. Assistant Prosecutor Jack Felgenhauer stated Farnsworth failed several drug tests and also failed to report in to probation. Charges on the murder of Shrieve could be coming but the investigation is still ongoing. Charles Williams was also arraigned last week in the shooting incident that took place in the alley just off S. Main Street in Cadiz last Wednesday. According to a Cadiz Police report Williams claimed that the victim in the shooting, Alexander Bacon had chased Williams with a knife and actually attempted to get away from Bacon after visiting a house where Bacon later entered and began causing trouble with Williams. Bacon, according to the police report, was confronted on that information and became belligerent with officers and uncooperative to the point where he had to be tasered and taken into custody that same afternoon. Williams is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on April 2. His bail was set at $50,000. He is being charged with weapons under disability, which is a felony in the third degree.
