CADIZ – As of Thursday there still have been no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Harrison County according to Harrison County Health Department Administrator Garen Rhome who appeared before the commissioners at their Tuesday meeting, which was held one day

has people questioning what is essential to staying open for business and what is not: “All persons stay at home unless engaged in essential work or activity.” “I would just emphasize that the details of the order aren’t intended to dig through to find a loophole,” Rhome explained, “that’s not the spirit of it. The spirit of the order is to stay home absolutely if you can. If you are essential in the order, you should still

be taking the six-feet precautions, the ability to wash your hands or sanitize. It’s not just to find a way to still operate your business or get your guys to come in. That’s not the idea.” When asked what the difference between the precautions everyone was to take prior to the order and now Rhome stated, “functionally there’s not that much difference.” The determination of what was essential was being determined by each individual but as of Sunday, it’s an order with now being the time to

buckle down as he said, “flatten the curve” in the growth of the virus. “I implore folks to abide by this order,” Rhome told the board. “We’ll get through it together and if we want to see any sort of regular fun time, spring time, summer time activities we all need to work together and get through this.” EMA Director Eric Wilson was also present and said a link to the governor’s Sunday night order has now been

CADIZ – A shooting in Cadiz, which occurred just before 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon has led to the arrest of Cadiz resident, Chuck Williams. The shooting took place in the alley next to the Harrison News-Herald building. A single .40-caliber casing was found underneath the steps in the alley leading to the back of the NewsHerald building. Just before 3 p.m. loud voices were heard coming from that alley just off S. Main Street in Cadiz. Seconds later a loud boom rang

out and a man later identified as Williams was seen walking from the alley down S. Main Street. As he walked past the front entrance to the News-Herald three witnesses saw him drop a silver handgun from his pocket as it hit the sidewalk. Williams picked it up and placed it back in his pocket. Two witnesses standing across the street in front of the Visitor’s Center saw Williams continue walking down S. Main Street and turn down E. Warren Street where he tossed the gun onto the roof of

The Granitar family had a barnyard birth leaving the entire family excited. Two weeks ago, their Shetland pony gave birth to a 23-inch miniature horse. The baby was named Joe Friday as he was born on Friday the 13th. His Shetland mother belongs to Maddie but Coleman and Adriana have a big interest in the little guy who can be carried around like a baby. It was so tiny Maddie had to buy a goat halter to fit his small frame. It's hard to believe Joe is already nibbling small grain from the fingers of its owners. It will be up to 4 months before the Shetland pony mom starts the weaning. Three of the Glenn horses look on from the barnyard. Coleman Granitar can be seen to the left. Maddie is holding the rope while Adirana looks on. They are the children of John and Rachael Granitar and grandchildren of Curt and Virginia Glenn of Irondale.
