CADIZ – It has been just a little more than three years since Wheeling Hospital (WH) acquired Harrison Community Hospital (HCH) but now the local hospital will be falling under
a new agreement, an acquisition by West Virginia University. Tony Martinelli, senior administrator and assistant vice president of HCH will be taking over WVU Medicine Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Glen Dale while current Barnesville CEO of that hospital, Dave Phillips, will be
taking over at HCH while maintaining his duties in Barnesville as well. CEO of WH, Doug Harrison, will remain in his current position. “Over the last year and a half West Virginia University health system has entered into a management agreement with Wheeling Hospital, which also includes Harrison (Community) Hospital,” Harrison Said. “So, WVU health system has been managing both Wheeling and Harrison for the past year and a half under a management agreement.” Harrison said on April 1 WVU will have negotiated the “acquisition” of Harrison, Wheeling, and Barnesville hospitals where all three will join
WVU’s health system but Harrison emphasized that it is not a purchase of HCH. “The technical term is we’re entering into a long-term lease agreement with the diocese of Wheeling, West Virginia…” Harrison explained. He continued by stating, at least for Wheeling, “we needed a viable longterm partner” for ensuring success for the future. He said independent hospitals are having trouble staying afloat calling it “difficult” in today’s environment. He said more of the smaller hospitals are joining forces with the larger ones for recruiting in the workforce, as well as financial stability. Phillips stated on behalf of Barnesville
Hospital that they entered into an agreement with WVU Medicine the same time WVU partnered up with the others back in 2017. He also said they had been evaluating strategy concerning their future and echoed Harrison’s thoughts on the difficulty of independent hospitals surviving without being a part of a larger health system. And being a part of a health system allows for “access to resources and information technology and other programming that is available on a much larger scale within a system model.” As for benefits for HCH, Harrison

CADIZ – A robbery that occurred at the Cadiz Tractor Supply early Monday morning around 1:50 a.m. resulted in the arrests of two of the three suspects. Video surveillance exposed the three suspects backing a U-Haul trailer into the area where 4-wheelers had been chained together. Once broken the chain triggered an alarm alerting a security company, which in turn alerted the sheriff’s office. Cadiz Police Chief Ryan McCann stated that a manager from Tractor Supply arrived on scene to confirm that one small ATV or, Go Kart had been missing. McCann released the names of the two apprehended suspects later in the week, which was revealed to be a Brandon Sine, 36, of Martins Ferry, and Courtney Jenkins, 24, of Delray, West Virginia. Cadiz Police said Jenkins had very little criminal record but did have an active warrant on her for Summit County. Cadiz Police were on the scene just minutes after the suspects pulled away. After a BOLO (Be On the Lookout) message was sent to all surrounding counties, St. Clairsville Police captured two of the suspects on Ohio 40 within two hours of the alleged crime. One male suspect remains at large. Both Sine and Jenkins are due back in court for a preliminary hearing on March 3. Both have already appeared for their arraignments and charged with theft, a felony of the fifth degree. Jenkins was released on her own recognizance. Her criminal history was said to be very light with Sine’s having other thefts as a part of his past record.

CADIZ – It’s been a long haul for the Cadiz Puskarich Library since renovations began at the start of last summer. COVID restrictions and interference took its toll but what the community will find is a fabulous new facility to enjoy. And one of those benefits is a new sound studio where anyone can sit down in a room and make podcasts, music and more. Director Sandi Thompson is excited while giving a pre-grand opening tour showing a new front entrance and a rearranged main floor. But along with all that excitement is the

new recording studio that was installed by award winning musician and producer Jamie Peck, of Jamie Peck Productions in Wheeling. Peck, an adjunct professor at West Liberty University, was putting the finishing touches on the system Tuesday and said it was working like a charm. Nominated twice for an Emmy, he won for a PBS production of “Pittsburgh from the Air.” “Individuals from home who may not have a creative outlet from home,” Thompson explained regarding the opportunities the recording studio will offer. She said it’s been working out very well and the public has been cooperating with the minimal access they have on the ground floor at this time.

Thompson said HBM Architects out of Cleveland have been doing the job on the renovations and donations from Dr. Scott Pendleton, Grae-Con Construction, Tony’s Treasures and the Puskarich Library Endowment Fund helped make it possible. She said all the things that the public need to take care of can be done at the library such as, tax returns, unemployment needs, job searches and general email usage. “We’ve tried to keep all of our services going while renovations is going on,” Thompson said. Plans for a grand opening are expected to be held on April 7, which is the week of National Library Week.
