Harrison Hills seeks ball field lease By JD LONG

jim@harrisonnewsherald.com

CADIZ – The lease for Mazeroski Field in Cadiz that’s been held by the boosters for many years is being sought by the Harrison Hills City School District, it was announced at last Thursday’s Cadiz council meeting. Village Solicitor Costa D. Mastros laid out the facts regarding the “school board to take over the lease.” He told council that a Memorandum of Understanding would need to be written where both parties would have to sign it. “I’ve received a new lease from the

school district, I have to review it,” Mastros explained. “You all will see it first and then you all will vote on it.” Council Member John Vermillion noted that Harrison Hills was “eightypercent” finished towards a baseball field of their own, on school property this fall. This, he said, was in addition to the softball field that’s also being finished up. “I just don’t want to see us give that lease up,” Vermillion began. “I’d like to see something in there that happens, we can take that field back. Because I don’t want to just see it turn into a practice facility…” Vermillion said it was “in the works” for a new baseball

facility to be built on the new school grounds. Vermillion stated that the softball field had been completed and 80 percent of the baseball field planning had also been completed and nearly ready to be built this fall. “It’s just kind of weird why this all of a sudden is coming up that the school district is wanting to take this lease over…” Vermillion stated. Mastros said they finally located the actual lease and acknowledged that the boosters had been taking care of the field approximately 20 years. He did agree that this was happening “all of a sudden” after the boosters care for so

many years. When contacted this week Harrison Hills Board of Education Superintendent Dana Snider said the only thing done towards a baseball field is plans were drawn up on paper and nothing else. Snider said the boosters approached the school about taking over the lease and that is why they became involved. She said Mrs. Liggett was approached about constructing a baseball field regarding the surrounding property she owns near the new school but said Liggett has other plans for her property. She added that Mastros and the school’s attorney, Dan Spahn were

working together to come up with an agreement regarding the lease. “There’s nothing going on with baseball,” Snider said. As far as the softball field is concerned, she said it would hopefully be completed in May but there is the possibility it would not be used this year. Vermillion suggested a clause in the lease that if a new baseball facility was to actually come to fruition then the village could take Mazeroski Field back if they felt it necessary. In other issues discussed, Vermillion told council that the new break room

CBA focuses attention on uptown square By JD LONG

jim@harrisonnewsherald.com

CADIZ – The uptown square that has been partly guarded by the small wooden fence was one of the topics of discussion at the Cadiz Business Association (CBA) meeting held at the Ranch To Table restaurant Wednesday afternoon. Nancy Davis suggested a gazebo be built and brought along a brochure with various designs and

prices that were surprisingly not too expensive when board members took a look. Davis emphasized that they would need to find out where exactly the Community Improvement Corporation (CIC) stands with the old bank building, which is the reason for the fence. The fence was put there to keep the public at a distance because of the shape the outer wall is in. CIC

Board of Education says goodbye to Marjorie Findling A fixture for more than 30 years serving the Harrison County Board of Elections (BOE), Marjorie Findling attended her final meeting Monday afternoon at the BOE’s 1 p.m. meeting. Democratic Chair and board member Holly Brindley noted her service to the county.

“And we want to thank her for all the years of dedication that she has given to us,” Brindley said. Findling said she came to the BOE in 1985 left and returned for good in 1996. She finally filled a board position in 2002. “She knows more than we’ll ever, ever begin to know,” Brindley said.

“She just retains everything so we thank you for your service dear.” Findley responded by stating it was a privilege to serve the people of the county. (Pictured on the left is Ohio Secretary of State liaison Alex Pavlov with Findling).

This is one rendering of many ideas for a gazebo to be built at the uptown square. Nancy Davis of the Cadiz Business Association brought in some pictures of various designs at Wednesday’s meeting, though, this one is more elaborate. Prices ranged from $11,000 to $18,000 and various ideas for fundraising were also discussed.

for weeks now. This past week 26 new cases were reported stopping the fourweek downward trend where the lowest seen in months, 17, was reported last week. Harrison County Health Administrator Garen Rhome, on Wednesday, reported a total of 957

COVID cases in the county and with 887 now presumed recovered. That is up only 13 from last week with active cases jumping by 12 for a new total of 52 this week. Rhome also announced another death bringing that total to 18. He said the latest individual was over 70 years of age.

When asked about going back to Orange alert status he explained the 100 per 100,000 cases that decides what status a county will be in. He said even though the county is experiencing an average of only four cases per day, they are still in that “high incidence” range of accumulated cases.

“And as long as we are over one hundred per one hundred thousand, which is what the CDC identifies for this particular virus…we won’t walk back,” Rhome explained referring to the current Red status that the county
