Martin Luther King Jr. honored in Cadiz By JD LONG

jim@harrisonnewsherald.com

CADIZ – Finally, after a few years of rain then extreme cold canceling the traditional walk on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day, the event was held Monday under crisp but manageable temperatures. King, whose birthday is actually Jan. 15 is honored on the third Monday of every January, and recognized as a federal holiday. And on this third Monday of 2020 approximately 20 to 25 people took part in the walk that began at the village uptown square and ended just down the street at the St. James A.M.E. Church. Rev. Craig A. Smith, D.D. Pastor did the honors once inside the cozy confines of the church where he gave a speech noting Dr. King’s words and actions right up until the time he was murdered in 1968. He talked of social justice and equality, many things King emphasized during his life. “We live in a world that reams with inequality based on religion, race, gender and social status,” he told the gathering. “The result is social injustice, racism, discrimination, wars and genocide.” Rev. Smith said that this

kind of behavior was not God’s kingdom but that there was “social justice and equality for all,” which he said is what King preached. Rev. Smith, who took over the congregation for the late Rev. William Lewis shared his memories of how Lewis was grooming Smith to take over before Lewis died. He said Lewis wasn’t feeling up for the drive into Cadiz from Columbus citing his age and the winter months, and wanted Lewis to take over for him. In a sermon that was to be the last time that Smith would see Lewis, the late reverend played the piano knowing Smith’s favorite song titled, “I won’t complain” and played that for him. A week later the popular Lewis was dead and Smith was to take over much sooner than expected. He told Smith leading up to the last day they saw each other, “you’re from here (Smithfield), these are your people and I want them taken care of,” he said of Lewis’s words to him. Smith also spoke of opportunity as, “It’s an opportunity that we must live and proclaim.” After the march many gathered below in the cafeteria for food and drink and shared their morning experience.

Several who attended remarked the rather large gathering, which was more than they’ve seen in years. And with Smith peppering Dr. King’s drive and impact throughout his speech rounded the day off nicely. “He is living in total social justice and equality around the throne of God. King made a difference in his day that is still impacting today.” Above: Rev. Craig Smith stands before his congregation where he took over for the late Rev. William Lewis. CADIZ – Harrison County Engineer Doug Bachman announced his presentation of a grant in the amount of $150,000. The money will be used to stripe the road’s center lines. He acknowledged it wasn’t for all county roads but a significant amount of them. The total cost was $157,000 with the remainder being paid by oil and gas taxes if necessary. Bachman said the grant was from ODOT but actually administered by the County Engineer’s Association through the Highway Safety

Improvement Program. He said bids are expected to go out between April 1 and June 30. “Good work getting the grant,” Commissioner Don Bethel told him. The commissioners then approved of the plans Bachman was presenting. He said the grant was accepted a couple months ago. Bachman also introduced a Road Use Maintenance Agreement (RUMA) involving Homeland Realty “working with” Maysville Timber dealing using four miles of Miller Station Road from Hopedale’s corporation limit to Blue Ridge Road.

Scio announces 2020 committee lineup By JD LONG

Demolition begins on Hopedale East Elementary One would never know, at least for this week, if standing at the front of the now-defunct Hopedale East Elementary school in Hopedale. It’s all intact as of Wednesday but walk around behind and the gutting out has begun. It’s a sad one for the community but something they knew was coming once the school levy passed several years ago. Hopedale is the second of the three schools to be knocked down with only Scio still left standing. That will happen sometime in late spring or early summer perhaps.
