Schlitz Audubon Nature Center conserves our land’s diverse habitats on Lake Michigan and provides meaningful experiences and environmental education for all.

Thank you for being part of our community!

Like the birds that grace our skies, our work at Schlitz Audubon is about broadening our horizons and reaching new heights. Thanks to your generosity and steadfast support, we are not only sustaining our mission but elevating it—building on our strengths to reach more people, deepen connections, and foster engagement with nature.

The Barbara Stover and Susan Bell Birding Academy is an exciting milestone for the Center! This three-pillar initiative—featuring The Birding Academy’s immersive programs, a revitalized Feeder Grove, and a new Birding Resource Center—creates a dynamic hub for birding education that connects people of all backgrounds to nature, one another, and the joys of our avian friends.

Our Nature Preschool continues to nurture curiosity and confidence in our youngest learners. What began as a bold vision has grown into a thriving educational cornerstone that inspires children across Milwaukee, instilling lessons of empathy, responsibility, and stewardship that will guide them throughout life.

The Raptors of Schlitz Audubon captivate audiences from sports arenas to retirement communities, reaching more people than ever. By meeting audiences wherever they gather in community, our raptors transform awe into awareness, broadening understanding of conservation and the ecosystems that sustain these remarkable species.

Our community-oriented educational programs foster learning across every stage of life as well as wide-ranging interests and abilities. From elementary students exploring STEM topics, to adults practicing plant identification, to individuals with memory loss enjoying sensory-rich crafting, all learners can find a pathway for connection to nature.

As we celebrate this year of taking flight, we are grateful for your role in making it possible. With your continued support, and with pride in earning our eighth consecutive four-star rating from Charity Navigator, we are ready to soar even higher.

The Birding Academy | Taking Flight

Schlitz Audubon celebrates the launch of The Barbara Stover and Susan Bell Birding Academy, a transformative initiative made possible through a generous gift from Steve and Susan (Stover) Bell. Named in honor of Susan and her mother, Barbara, the Academy reflects their family’s multi-generational commitment to learning about and caring for the natural world. This three-pillar initiative—The Birding Academy, Feeder Grove, and the Birding Resource Center—blends the joy of birdwatching with meaningful opportunities for inspiration, education, and community building, helping learners of all levels connect more deeply to birds, nature, and each other.

COMPREHENSIVE BIRD SPECIES PROFILES DESIGNED FOR OUR NEW INTERACTIVE KIOSK

At the heart of this initiative is The Birding Academy, a robust collection of in-person programs. Certificates offer multi-week deep dives into broad topics like birds at the Center, Wisconsin’s raptors, or backyard habitats, while seminars provide single-session explorations of more focused topics. Guided hikes highlight seasonal changes across our habitats, while field adventures take birders farther afield to destinations like Horicon Marsh. Some programs blend science with the arts and humanities, inviting participants to sketch in the outdoors, reflect through writing, or explore birds in literature.

Just steps away from the classroom, visitors can experience Feeder Grove, a revitalized observation area adjacent to our Great Hall. Designed with native plants, feeders, and water features, the space provides an enticing habitat for resident and migrating birds while offering year-round viewing opportunities. From the Great Hall windows, our Veranda, or even through livestreaming feeder cams, bird lovers can watch the flurry of activity and apply what they’ve learned in real time or get inspired for their next educational foray.

Completing the trio is the Birding Resource Center, a hub for knowledge and tools that extends the learning journey. Stocked with binoculars, field guides, journals, books, and outdoor gear—all selected with expert input—the Resource Center equips visitors to continue exploring well beyond our trails.

The Barbara Stover and Susan Bell Birding Academy builds a community of lifelong learners—people who support one another, cherish the natural world, and take stewardship actions that help birds thrive.

Nature Preschool | Taking Flight

At our Nature Preschool, young children discover the natural world and their own potential through play, exploration, and community. By fostering independence, empathy, and self-confidence, teachers encourage each child to wonder, take risks, and learn cooperatively. The many outdoor sensory experiences provide a near-perfect match with young children's developmental needs. Seasonal rhythms shape our curriculum, so students discover the joys of fall monarch migration, winter animal tracks, and spring maple sugaring.

1:8

TEACHER TO STUDENT RATIO FOSTERS HEALTHY, PLAY-BASED LEARNING OUTDOORS

Our Urban Outreach Program expands the Nature Preschool’s philosophy and approach to classrooms across Milwaukee. Throughout the academic year, students from Malaika Early Learning Center and Next Door Milwaukee participate in recurring, multi-visit experiences: spending time at the Nature Preschool for outdoor exploration and guided hikes, while our educators visit their classrooms with animal ambassadors and nature artifacts. By engaging with the same children and teachers month after month, we build trust, foster comfort in the outdoors, and help urban educators feel confident weaving nature into their curriculum.

400

CHILDREN PROVIDED WITH MULTI-VISIT EXPERIENCES THROUGH THE URBAN OUTREACH PROGRAM

Just as we provide guidance to our outreach partners, it is vital to our mission that we invest in our own staff’s professional development. Our teachers engage in specialized training to gain insights into new early childhood education approaches and explore evolving nature-based outdoor learning models. In providing these opportunities, we strengthen both our staff and the experiences they provide to students.

1,495

FAMILIES HAVE BEEN PART OF THE NATURE PRESCHOOL SINCE ITS INCEPTION

The Nature Preschool’s roots trace back to Buffy Cheek Duback, former Executive Director, who believed deeply in connecting young children with nature. Buffy created the nationally recognized and awarded Nature Preschool 22 years ago and, earlier this year, Buffy and Steve Duback established the Buffy Cheek Duback Nature Preschool Fund, which now supports both the Urban Outreach Program and teacher professional development in perpetuity. Her vision lives on in every Nature Preschool graduate who carries with them a deep affection for and kinship with nature—whether they become teachers, artists, engineers, or civic leaders.

By cultivating wonder and connection in our youngest learners, our Nature Preschool plants the seeds of stewardship that will shape a more compassionate and sustainable future.

The Raptors of Schlitz Audubon | Taking Flight

Schlitz

Audubon’s Raptor Ambassadors embody the power of experience-based environmental education. From our smallest owl to our largest eagle, these birds captivate audiences, spark wonder, and open doors to conversations about conservation and habitat preservation. Encountering a hawk or falcon up close often inspires people to ask questions, share personal stories, or even take stewardship action.

VALKYRIE OUR BALD EAGLE

This year, we have expanded our reach across Milwaukee and beyond. New partnerships with Marquette University, the Milwaukee Bucks, and the Milwaukee Brewers brought raptors into the spotlight for thousands of people. We are also visiting more community spaces than ever—from retirement homes to nature clubs—to introduce our birds to audiences we haven’t engaged before. Our monthly local TV news segment has further amplified our presence. Each of these touchpoints builds awareness of both the birds themselves and the ecosystems they depend on. Raptor programs offered at the Center build on these touchpoints, offering visitors a pathway for deeper learning.

We were also thrilled to welcome two new birds to our program! Freyja, a female American Kestrel, helps us highlight the conservation challenges facing this small but mighty falcon. Darwin, a Turkey Vulture, is changing perceptions about this misunderstood species and teaching about the vital role vultures play as “Nature’s Cleanup Crew.” Each new bird broadens our educational opportunities and strengthens the stories we share. Behind the scenes, our commitment to the highest standards of care has been recognized with a USDA Animal and Plant Inspection Service license, a testament to the welfare of the raptors entrusted to us.

Together, these advances extend the Raptors of Schlitz Audubon’s impact. By reaching more communities, expanding audiences, and building awareness, we inspire people to care about raptors—and, in turn, the habitats that sustain them. That is how awe becomes action, and how these ambassadors help us fulfill our mission to connect people with nature.

The Raptors of Schlitz Audubon connect people to wildlife and their habitats, turning awe-inspiring encounters into lasting conservation impact.

Elementary Student

Community Education | Taking Flight

Every day at Schlitz Audubon, learners of all ages step onto a journey that begins with a spark of wonder that can grow into greater connection with the natural world. Our programs are designed with this in mind—meeting learners at different life stages, across a range of interests and abilities.

PEOPLE WITH SPECIFIC NEEDS PARTICIPATED IN ACCESSIBLE NATURE-BASED EDUCATION

For children, early shared experiences outdoors can strengthen curiosity, social development, and even academic achievement. Elementary students take field trips to the Center for programs that feature nature-based art, habitat discovery, science and math concept building, and up-close animal encounters. Older students explore glacial landscapes, marshes, and prairies on daylong excursions. We also bring nature into school assemblies and classrooms, supplementing existing curriculum with environmental education that reinforces STEM initiatives and aligns with key standards. For homeschool families, we provide science and project-based programs that foster community among parents and children.

Our dedication to environmental education reaches well beyond childhood. Adults visit the Center to nurture their relationship with nature, whether by practicing mindfulness through forest bathing, learning bird songs in our meadows, or contributing to citizen science projects. Families create shared memories through joyful intergenerational experiences, while seniors find enrichment and social connection through programs offered both at the Center and in community spaces like libraries and assisted living facilities.

We believe everyone should have the chance to learn, play, and flourish in nature. With help from donors, our Youth Environmental Education Scholarship program ensures that thousands of Milwaukee school students with limited resources can benefit from our programs at no cost. For those with specific learning needs, we design inclusive experiences—from tactile programs featuring natural artifacts to SPARK! sessions that offer individuals with memory loss and their caregivers a gentle, sensory-rich way to engage with nature.

Wherever people are on their learning journey, we open pathways of connection to nature that cultivate well-being, community, and conservation.

We invite you to consider becoming part of the Evergreen Society, a small group of visionary benefactors who cherish nature and conservation, and who have included Schlitz Audubon in their estate plans. The Evergreen Society recognizes and honors donors who will help advance the mission of Schlitz Audubon in this way.

Planned gifts can be made through bequests, retirement plans, charitable remainder trusts, life insurance policies, or appreciated assets. Even if you feel you only have modest means to share, you can still include Schlitz Audubon in your will—you need only believe in our mission. Together, we will decide which aspect of the Center means the most to you, and we will ensure that this area will benefit from your interest. This may include our land conservation efforts, our award-winning Nature School, our celebrated Raptor and Animal Ambassador Program, or our nature-based educational programs with offerings for all ages and abilities.

Learn more by contacting us at giving@schlitzaudubon.org or calling 414-352-2880 x122 today!

Every attempt has been made to ensure the accuracy and completeness of our donor list. If you find an error, please contact us at (414) 352-2880 x237 to make a correction.
