Es muss anders werden! – Über ein Projekt, das zum Sichtbarmachen unserer kollektiven Weisheit Mut machen soll Ist es möglich, dass man Jahrtausende Zeit gehabt hat, zu schauen, nachzudenken und aufzuzeichnen, und dass man die Jahrtausende hat vergehen lassen wie eine Schulpause, in der man sein Butterbrot isst und einen Apfel? Ja, es ist möglich.1 Als ich diese Stelle aus einem tagebuchartigen Text von Rainer Maria Rilke las, konnte ich nur zustimmend nicken, zumal die irische Regierung gerade (Mitte März 2020) den ersten Lockdown beschlossen hatte. Wer hätte angesichts der verheerenden Krisen und beklagenswerten Zustände in vielen Teilen der Welt – und jetzt auch der Bedrohung durch das Covid-19-Virus – nicht resignative Momente und möchte sich nicht am liebsten aus ihr fortträumen ... und schwerelos durch die weite Galaxie schweben, um endlich auf einem Wunschplanten zu landen?

Aber solange das keine Option ist, müssen wir uns wohl oder übel um unsere irdische Wirklichkeit kümmern: Stelle Dir ein Land auf dem Planeten Erde vor, in dem sich die Dinge immer weiter zum Schlechteren entwickelt haben. Die Situation ist so kritisch geworden, dass Du das Land verlassen wirst. Wo befindet sich dieses Land? Wie alt bist Du? Bist Du weiblich, männlich, divers? Wie steht es um Deine körperliche Verfassung? Du kannst auf Deinem Weg nur wenig mitnehmen: Was aber ist dir besonders wichtig, was packst Du ein?

Ja, was wäre für Dich das Wesentliche?

Mit solchen Fragen habe ich während meiner langjährigen Hochschullehrer-Tätigkeit an der Universität Cork Theater- und Sprachstudierende oft dazu angeregt, sich eine Vorstellung von einer konkreten Situation und Figur zu machen, um sie auf die szenische Erarbeitung eines Gedichts einzustimmen, das Bertolt Brecht 1938 im dänischen Exil schrieb: Legende von der Entstehung des Buches Taoteking auf dem Wege des Laotse in die Emigration.2 In den ersten zwei Strophen entwirft Brecht folgendes Szenario: Als er siebzig war und war gebrechlich Drängte es den Lehrer doch nach Ruh Denn die Güte war im Lande wieder einmal schwächlich Und die Bosheit nahm an Kräften wieder einmal zu.

Und er gürtete den Schuh.

Und er packte ein, was er so brauchte: Wenig. Doch es wurde dies und das.

So die Pfeife, die er immer abends rauchte Und das Büchlein, das er immer las.

Weißbrot nach dem Augenmaß.

In den dreizehn Strophen von Brechts Gedicht geht es um einen chinesischen Intellektuellen, der es unter den gegebenen Bedingungen im Land bzw. der Provinz seiner Herkunft nicht mehr aushält und sich entscheidet, alles Vertraute hinter sich zu lassen und ins Exil zu gehen. Als der Intellektuelle an die Landesgrenze kommt, wird ihm von einem Zöllner – auch dieser leidet unter den Zuständen im Land (“Flickjoppe. Keine Schuh.”) – Unterkunft und Verpflegung angeboten.

Im Gegenzug soll der Weise sein Wissen nicht mit sich fortnehmen, sondern aufschreiben und zurücklassen. Und so geschieht es, wie wir in der elften Strophe erfahren: Und von seinem Ochsen stieg der Weise Sieben Tage schrieben sie zu zweit Und der Zöllner brachte Essen (und er fluchte nur noch leise Mit den Schmugglern in der ganzen Zeit) Und dann war's soweit.

Gemeint ist der Moment, in dem die Ergebnisse großer intellektueller Anstrengung an den Zöllner übergeben werden – in der Form von 81 Sprüchen!

In diesem Gedicht verfügt ein gelehrter Mann über kostbares Wissen. Dem beharrlichen Fragen des Zöllners ist es zu verdanken, dass dieses Wissen verbreitet und damit nützlich werden kann, um eine weitere Zunahme von Bosheit im Lande zu verhindern. Wir erfahren zwar nicht, worin die in 81 Sprüchen gebündelte Weisheit genau besteht, aber in Strophe fünf bekommen wir eine Ahnung vom Kern dieser Weisheit; als der Zöllner fragt, ob der Weise was “rausgekriegt” habe, erhält er als Antwort: Daß das weiche Wasser in Bewegung Mit der Zeit den mächtigen Stein besiegt.

Du verstehst, das Harte unterliegt.

In den Tagen des ersten Lockdowns kam mir der Gedanke, dass in der gegenwärtig wackeligen Welt Brechts Gedicht ein guter Impuls sein könnte für eine kreative Verständigung darüber, wie wir uns das “weiche Wasser in Bewegung” vorstellen, und wie den “mächtigen Stein”, der uns am gesellschaftlichen Fortschreiten hindert. Ich stellte meine Projektidee unter dem Titel Es muss anders werden – 81 Sprüche zur Enthärtung der Welt zunächst im Familien- und Freundeskreis vor, war erfreut über die durchweg positive Reaktion, erweiterte meine Überlegungen und schrieb an weitere Personen aus meinem privaten und beruflichen Umfeld in etwa dieser Weise:

In dem hiermit vorgeschlagenen Projekt geht es nicht um einen weisen Mann wie in Brechts Gedicht bzw. um ein bestimmtes Geschlecht oder eine Einzelperson. Vielmehr geht es um uns alle, um unsere kollektive Weisheit in Form von 81 Sprüchen, die unsere Vision von einer enthärteten, sprich menschlicheren und solidarischeren Welt bündeln.

In diesem frühen Stadium ist noch vollkommen offen, was unter “Spruch” zu verstehen ist – Aufforderung, These – Antithese, Empfehlung, Aphorismus, Vers, Kurzgedicht, Metapher, Alltagsbeobachtung – und welchen Grundton er hat (z.B. provokativ, ironisch, appellierend, ernst, humorvoll). Der Fantasie sind also keine Grenzen gesetzt. Wichtig scheint mir, dass es sich um einen kurzen Text handelt (auch eine Text/Bild-Kombination wäre eine Option), aus dem hervorgeht, wie wir uns das “Wasser in Bewegung” vorstellen; was das Harte ist, das es zu besiegen gilt und was an dessen Stelle treten könnte. Grundsätzlich können die Sprüche verschiedenste Bereiche abdecken. Sie sollten möglichst mit einem kurzen Kommentar (max. eine Seite) versehen werden, damit sich Leser*innen besser vorstellen können, auf welchen Aspekt von Bereich/ Thema X (z.B. Politik, Kunst, Gesundheitswesen, Umwelt, Ökonomie, Religion, Ethik, Migration etc.) sich der jeweilige Spruch bezieht.

Hier ein Beispiel: Beispiel 1: Niemand im Land sollte ein höheres Privateinkommen haben als die Person, die die politische Verantwortung für das ganze Land trägt.

Anmerkung: Ein solcher Spruch würde die Aufmerksamkeit auf absurde Diskrepanzen richten und könnte durch eine kurze Erklärung ergänzt werden, etwa wie folgt: Nichts gegen Fußball, schließlich habe ich bis zum 64. Lebensjahr in der Freizeit selber gerne Fußball gespielt.

Aber für mich bleibt unfassbar, dass es in der deutschen

Bundesliga Fußballspieler gibt, die etwa 50mal so viel verdienen wie Angela Merkel und 300mal so viel wie ein durchschnittlicher deutscher Industriearbeiter.

Die Coronakrise hat vor Augen geführt, wie hart Pflegefachkräfte tagein, tagaus im Einsatz sind, um Leben zu retten, aber dafür ­einen deutlich zu niedrigen Lohn erhalten.

Zu diesem Thema erschienen immer mal wieder Berichte in den Zeitungen, aber auf den Sportseiten las ich zur gleichen Zeit eine Meldung über einen führenden Fußballverein, wo es auf einer ganz anderen Ebene kriselte: Die Vertragsverhandlungen zwischen Spieler und Verein – scheinbar ging es um ein Jahresgehalt von 20 Millionen Euros – waren ins Stocken geraten. Die Diskrepanz zwischen einem Gehalt in solcher Höhe und dem Einkommen einer Pflegefachkraft ist äußerst befremdlich und in keinster Weise zu rechtfertigen.

Wie Pflegefachkräfte befinden sich derzeit auch viele Kulturschaffende in einer finanziell prekären Situation. So fordert Herbert Grönemeyer in einem Artikel in DIE ZEIT unter dem Titel Geld ist im Übermaß vorhanden: “Den Künstlern, die durch die Pandemie und den neuerlichen Lockdown in Not geraten sind, muss endlich geholfen werden.

Wie wäre es, wenn die vermögendsten Menschen dieses Landes ihnen zur Seite sprängen?”3 Er erwähnt in dem Artikel, dass es in Deutschland ca. 1,8 Millionen Millionäre gibt, denen eine zweimalige Sonderzahlung von 50.000 bis 150.000 Euro nicht weh täte. Immer häufiger ist davon die Rede, dass sich auch in Deutschland eine Parallelgesellschaft entwickelt. Eine solche Entwicklung ist nicht zwangsläufig, sie ließe sich stoppen.

Hier noch ein anderes Beispiel, um anzudeuten, dass auch Wunschszenarien möglich sind:

Beispiel 2: Halte an Träumen fest Denn wenn Träume sterben Ist das Leben wie ein Vogel mit einem gebrochenen Flügel Der nicht fliegen kann Langston Hughes In einem meiner wiederkehrenden Träume sind alle Diktatoren und Macho-Politiker dieser Welt zusammengepfercht und auf ein Narrenschiff getrieben worden. Sobald das Schiff lossegelt, ist der Teufel los, denn jeder Narr versucht, um jeden Preis und ohne Rücksicht auf sich selbst und andere, die Macht über das Steuer an sich zu reißen. Außer Kontrolle, im Chaos von Meuterei- und Putschversuchen, treibt das in einen reißenden Strudel geratene Schiff auf ein Felsenriff zu ... Tiefer kann man nicht sinken.

Zu dem Zeitpunkt, an dem dieses Buch in Druck geht, hat Donald Trump allen Navigationssinn verloren, aber er klammert sich weiter hartnäckig am Steuer fest. Martin Luther Kings I have a dream ... ist wahrscheinlich die bekannteste amerikanische Rede des 20. Jahrhunderts. Auch wenn das gemeinsame Träumen nicht sofortige Veränderung bewirkt, entsteht trotzdem eine Energie, die im Laufe der Zeit einen großen Unterschied ausmachen kann.

Gerade erst, im Kontext der amerikanischen Präsidentschaftswahlen 2020, sind wir davon Zeugen geworden.

Ein Traum ist wahr geworden für all die amerikanischen Bürger*innen, die aufgestanden sind, um demokratische Werte zu verteidigen, Fairness und Gerechtigkeit anzustreben und einen aufrichtigen, zivilisierten Umgang miteinander zu pflegen. Sie waren Teil einer Bewegung, die durch beharrlich-gewaltloses Engagement einen Gezeitenwechsel vorangetrieben hat, handelnd wie “weiches Wasser”, das mit der Zeit den mächtigen Stein besiegt. Sie konnten den Schiffbruch der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika gerade noch verhindern.

Im Beispiel 1 geht es um den Aspekt Verteilungsgerechtigkeit, im Beispiel 2 um den Aspekt Machtmissbrauch. Ich bin gespannt darauf, welche Aspektvielfalt im Laufe des Projekts entsteht.

Dieses Projekt zur “Enthärtung der Welt” kann hoffentlich zu einer breiten Diskussion über unsere Welt nach Covid-19 anregen. Je früher in verschiedensten (bildungs)politischen, sozialen und kulturellen Kontexten intensiv diskutiert wird, desto heilsamer für uns alle.

Ideal wäre, wenn sich jede/r Beitragende mit einem kritischen Aspekt unserer gesellschaftlichen Wirklichkeit (national/international) auseinandersetzt und dazu einen selbst erdachten Spruch und möglichst auch Kommentar (max. eine Seite) liefert. Grundsätzlich kann aber auch ein Zitat verwendet oder adaptiert werden.

Soweit die leicht gekürzte und hier etwas aktualisierte Projektbeschreibung, die ich verschickte. Seither sind neun Monate vergangen, in dieser Zeit war es für mich persönlich sehr spannend aus dem Kreise der Familie, von Freund*innen, Nachbar*innen und Berufskolleg*innen Texte geschickt zu bekommen, in denen die Verfasser*innen sensibel auf die Verunsicherung durch Covid-19 eingehen und ihre Vision von einer “Enthärtung unserer Welt” vermitteln.

Es freut mich außerordentlich, dass das Projekt nun in Form dieser Publikation einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt werden kann.

Die am Projekt Mitwirkenden sind oder waren zumeist im Bereich Bildung und in künstlerischen Bereichen tätig, aber auch Perspektiven aus anderen Berufsfeldern (etwa Medizin, Therapie, Ingenieurwesen, Gartenbau) sind vertreten. Viele sind in den beiden Ländern beheimatet, zwischen denen ich mich im Laufe der letzten 30 Jahre hin- und herbewegt habe, Irland und Deutschland, aber auch Kolleg*innen aus den folgenden Ländern sind mit Beiträgen vertreten: Chile, Frankreich, Großbritannien, Italien, Israel, Kanada, Österreich, Schottland, Schweden, Schweiz, Ukraine, USA.

Die Vielfalt der Beiträge ist eindrucksvoll, die Autor*innen schreiben aus der Perspektive persönlicher Erfahrung, werfen kritische Fragen auf und stärken mit ihren sensiblen Szenarien einer solidarischeren, menschlicheren Welt unsere Zuversicht: Ja, in vielen Bereichen unseres Lebens ließe sich das Harte überwinden!

Weiter oben schrieb ich von der Wichtigkeit, an Träumen festzuhalten. Ich träume davon, dass möglichst viele Leser*innen der Grundidee dieses Projekts etwas abgewinnen können und in ihren privaten und beruflichen Kontexten in ähnlicher Weise erkunden und sichtbarer machen, was als hart empfunden wird und wie das Harte überwunden werden kann. Einige der 81 Sprüche und Kommentare könnten für lebendige Diskussionen in Klassenzimmern und Seminarräumen sorgen, vielleicht eignen sie sich ja auch für eine öffentliche Lesung oder als Vorlage für eine Inszenierung?

In jedem Falle hoffe ich, liebe Leserin/lieber Leser, dass die Texte in diesem Band Sie dazu inspirieren, sich selber einen Spruch auszudenken und dazu einen Kommentar zu verfassen. Things have to change! – Introducing a project to spark tangible manifestations of our collective strength and wisdom Is it possible that there have been millennia in which to look, cogitate, and make a record, and that we have allowed these millennia to pass by like the lunch-break at school when you eat your sandwich and an apple? Yes, it's possible.5 When I read this passage from a diary-style text by Rainer Maria Rilke, I could not have agreed more, especially as the Irish government had just (mid-March 2020) decided on the first lockdown.

In view of the devastating crises and deplorable conditions prevailing in many parts of the world, who has not experienced such moments of resignation and felt tempted to turn their back on the world in order to float weightlessly through the vast spaces of the galaxy and finally land on the planet of their dreams?

However, whether we like it or not, this is not an option just now and we need to continue to attend to our earthly reality: Imagine a country on planet earth where things have been continually going from bad to worse. The situation has become so critical that you are about to leave the country. Where is this country?

How old are you? Are you female, male or other? What about your physical health? You can take only a few things with you: what is important to you? what will you put into your bag? What indeed is it that is essential for you?

These questions often served as a stimulus in my drama-based seminars. By asking the students to imagine a concrete situation and character, I prepared them for engaging with a poem that Bertolt Brecht wrote in 1938 while in exile in Denmark: Legend of the Origin of the Book Tao-Te-Ching on Lao-Tsu's Road into Exile.6 In the first two stanzas he creates the following scenario: once he was seventy and getting brittle quiet retirement seemed the teacher's due. in his country goodness had been weakening a little and the wickedness was gaining ground anew. so he buckled on his shoe. and he packed up what he would be needing: not much, but enough to travel light. items like the book that he was always reading and the pipe he used to smoke at night. bread as much as he thought right.

The thirteen stanzas of Brecht's poem focus on a Chinese intellectual who can no longer bear the steady increase of wickedness in his country. He decides to part with everything that is familiar to him, and goes into exile. When the intellectual reaches the border, a customs officer who is also suffering because of the deplorable state that his country is in (‘worn tunic. got no shoes.’) offers the sage accommodation and food, on condition that he does not take his knowledge with him, but records it and leaves it behind.

In the eleventh stanza we learn that this is exactly what happens: stiffly from his ox the sage dismounted. seven days he wrote there with his friend. and the man brought them their meals (and all the smugglers were astounded at what seemed this sudden lenient trend). and then came the end.

After seven days the customs officer is presented with the results of an extraordinary intellectual effort in the form of 81 Sayings.

In this poem a learned man holds precious knowledge. However, it is thanks to the customs officer’s insistent questioning that this knowledge can be shared, thus turning it into useful knowledge that helps to prevent a further increase of wickedness in the country.

What exactly the wisdom, packed into the 81 sayings, is about, we do not find out. In the fifth stanza though we get a sense of what the core of this wisdom is. When the customs officer asks if the sage managed to figure something out, the reply is: how quite soft water, by attrition over the years will grind strong rocks away. in other words, that hardness must lose the day.

During the days of the first lockdown it occurred to me that in our currently shaky yet hard-set world, Brecht's poem could provide a useful impulse for tapping into our imaginations, and for a multi-sided creative dialogue on what might be understood by the impact of ‘soft water’ that can grind the ‘mighty rocks’ away, to open up paths towards social progress.

I initially presented my project idea under the title Things Have to Change: How Can We Resolve Our World? – 81 Sayings to family members and friends. The feedback was unfailingly positive, which encouraged me to develop the idea further. So I wrote to others in my private and professional networks, on the following lines:

This project is not about a wise man as in Brecht's poem, is not about a certain gender or individual, but rather about our collective wisdom: in the form of 81 ‘Sayings’ that may reflect our vision of a ‘softened’, that is less rigid world, a world that is more human and less antagonistic.

At this early stage, what is to be understood by a saying is still very open – whether it takes the form of an appeal, thesis-antithesis, recommendation, aphorism, verse, short

poem, metaphor, everyday observation – open too is the matter of basic tone adopted (for example, provocative, ironic, appellative, serious, comical?).

I would set no limit to your imagination. However, it seems important to me that it is a short text (or combination of text and image) that conveys what we each understand by ‘soft water’ and what ‘hard rocks’ may currently be obstructing better social progress, and what exactly might usefully replace them.

In principle, the sayings can reference different areas. They should be complemented by a short commentary (max. one page) to ensure that the reader sees the connection between the saying and the chosen area or topic (for example, Politics, Art, Health, Economy, Religion, Ethics, Migration ... etc).

As most prospective contributors have worked or work in the area of education, the short commentaries should, if possible, shine a light on how education, including non-formal education, may make a special contribution to the ‘Softening of Hardened Rigidities in our World’. The project is based on the premise that the more educated a society is, the more open, democratic and caring it is likely to be.

Here is an example: There should be no person in the country whose private income is higher than that of the person who carries the main political responsibility for the whole country.

Note: This saying focuses on absurd socio-economic discrepancies, and might be complemented by an explanation such as: Nothing against football, after all I enjoyed playing football in my spare time until the age of 64. However, I just don’t get

it that the salary of some of the footballers in the German Premier League is approximately 50 times higher than that of Angela Merkel and 300 times higher than the average industrial wage. The Covid-19 crisis has opened our eyes to how tough the work is of care specialists who day in, day out are on call to rescue lives. However, for their commitment they receive a salary that clearly undervalues them.

Newspapers have suggested as much occasionally, but at the same time tend to report e.g. on supposed ‘crises’ of this sort in a leading German football club: negotiations have stalled between star player X and club Y on an annual contract reportedly worth 20 million Euros.

The discrepancy between such a high salary and the income of a care specialist is a phenomenon that should cause great concern, and can surely never be justified.

As with care specialists, there are many in the creative arts and culture generally who currently find themselves in a financially precarious situation. Hence leading German musician Herbert Grönemeyer wrote an article in the national German weekly paper DIE ZEIT entitled Money is in abundance: ‘We surely have to help the artists who as a result of the pandemic and the recent lockdown are facing hardship.

What if the wealthiest people in this country jumped to their assistance?’7 In the article he mentions that there are approximately 1.8 million millionaires in Germany, whom it would not hurt to make two special ex gratia contributions

'soft water' which over time grinds down the hard rock and wears it away. In so doing, they averted the shipwreck of the American nation. The first example above (salary discrepancies) focuses on the theme of fair distribution, the second (the steering of the ship of state) on the theme of political suppression and how it may be overcome by concerted action. I welcome any other productive approach, and look forward to seeing the range of themes and perspectives that may emerge in the course of this project.

This project, about ‘Softening the Hardened Rigidities in our World’ can hopefully contribute to a broader discussion about our world post Covid-19. The sooner we initiate discussions in various educational, political, social and cultural contexts the more all of us are likely to stand to benefit.

It would be ideal if each contributor engaged critically with an aspect of our shared national/international reality and supplied an original ‘Saying’ and accompanying ‘Commentary’ (max. 1 page). However, in principle, a quotation from a previously existing source may also be reflected on, applied or adapted to current conditions.

Since I sent out the above project description – here slightly shortened and updated – some nine months have passed. During this time it has been exciting to receive contributions from family members, friends, neighbours and colleagues, in which the authors respond sensitively to the uncertainty of the Covid-19 crisis and share their vision of a ‘Softening of Our World’. I am extremely pleased that the project, in the form of this publication, can now be presented to a wider public.

Most of the project participants are working or have worked in one branch or other of education and/or the arts: however, perspectives from other professions are represented (for example: Health, Therapy, Engineering, Horticulture). Many are based in the two countries I have moved between over the last 30 years, Ireland and Germany.

However, contributions have also come in from colleagues based in the following countries: Austria, Canada, Chile, France, Italy, Israel, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom, USA. The variety of contributions is impressive, the authors write from a perspective of personal experience, raise critical questions, and they offer sensitive scenarios of a more caring, human world that boost our confidence: yes, in many areas of life it would be possible to overcome what is hardened and rigid!

Above I quoted Langston Hughes on the importance of holding fast to dreams. My dream here is that as many readers as possible can warm to the basic idea of the project, explore possibilities in a similar fashion and make more visible what is perceived as hardened, rigid and how such inhuman hardening may be overcome.

These 81 sayings and commentaries might, for example, be used as a stimulus to facilitate creative writing exercises in teaching and learning settings – a text or selection of the texts might alternatively be used for a public reading, or even performance. In any case, dear reader, I would be delighted if you felt inspired by the texts in this volume to create your own saying and commentary. If so, please use the pages set aside for this purpose (226-227) – and we would appreciate it even more if you were to send your saying and commentary to project81plus@gmail.com, as this project of 81 Sayings for our times might in due course be extended into an online version.8 Thank you for reading, and for any active input you may wish to make.

When time comes to a standstill, nothing is harder to do than nothing.

Time is also experienced as a series of habitual activities which structure the space between sunrise and sunset. Waking up at a certain time, catching a certain bus or train, eating, meeting, working, sleeping. The pandemic put a pause on most habitual activities causing Time, as we knew it, to collapse and melt.

As the world inches towards a new normal, and experiments with creating a new series of habitual activities, there is a small space between the old and the new – a place where the old has fallen away and the new is yet to manifest. Free from old habits, it is a place of Doing Nothing, a place to stand still and listen deeply.

Doing Nothing does not imply passivity. It is an act of resistance and subversion. Doing Nothing demands the shifting of our attention, and replanting it in the physical realm. This might help to situate us more fully in the present.

Certain forms of attention can be contagious.

Wir erfahren Zeit als eine Aneinanderreihung gewohnter Akti­ vitäten, die den Raum zwischen Sonnenaufgang und Sonnenuntergang unterteilen. Zu einer bestimmten Zeit aufwachen, einen bestimmten Bus oder Zug nehmen, essen, Leute treffen, arbeiten, schlafen. Die Pandemie hat die gewöhnlichsten dieser Gewohnheiten zum Stillstand gebracht und somit die Zeit, wie wir sie bisher kannten, in sich zusammenfallen und schmelzen lassen.

Während die Welt nun langsam zu neuer Normalität zurück­ kehrt und damit experimentiert, neue Aneinanderreihungen von Gewohnheitsaktivitäten auszubilden, ist da ein kleiner Raum zwischen dem Alten und dem Neuen entstanden – ein Ort, an dem das Alte bereits verschwunden ist, aber das Neue sich erst noch bilden muss. Gelöst von den alten Gewohnheiten ist dies ein Raum des Nichtstuns, ein Ort um stillzustehen und zuzuhören.

Nichts zu tun bedeutet nicht, passiv zu sein. Es ist vielmehr ein Akt des Widerstands, des Umsturzes. Nichts zu tun erfordert es, unsere Aufmerksamkeit auf den Bereich des Physischen zu lenken.

Dies mag helfen, uns mehr in der Gegenwart einzufinden. Bestimmte Formen von Aufmerksamkeit können ansteckend sein.

... nur nicht mit Gewalt Mein (sozialer) Vater war Malermeister mit selbständigem Betrieb. Traditionell lag es in den 1950er Jahren hierzulande nahe, dass ein Sohn später den Betrieb übernimmt.

Dazu musste der beizeiten ins Handwerkliche eingeführt werden. Also: In den Schulferien galt es etwa, Sitzmöbel farb­ lich zu bearbeiten oder auch technische Geräte aus Metall, die in der Regel auseinandergenommen werden mussten und nach Beendigung der Malerarbeiten (wenn die Farbe trocken und fest war) wieder zusammengefügt wurden – eigentlich keine Tätigkeit für Maler, Anstreicher, Tapezierer, sondern für Metallwerker, Tischler, Elektriker, Mechaniker. Sei’s drum: Es musste sein. Doch: Ich hatte einen Vater, der wusste, wie es geht, wie es zu schaffen ist. Ganz nebenbei sagte er mir: * … nur nicht mit Gewalt * Das ist sein Spruch des Lebens! Ich muss ihn so schreiben: Die 3 Punkte am Anfang zeigen seine Beiläufigkeit an; die (nur) 4 Wörter geben die ‚Botschaft‘ und am Schluss KEIN Punkt, geschweige denn, ein Ausrufezeichen.

Ein Spruch wirkt dadurch, dass er gesagt und gehört wird, nicht dadurch, dass er geschrieben dasteht – womöglich noch, wie in Stein gemeißelt. Es ist ein Spruch der Gerechtigkeit einem Material / einer Aufgabe gegenüber; auch mir soll / kann / darf / wird / muss sie widerfahren. Es schwingen mit: Ich-Du-Verhältnis, Mit-Produktivität, Eigenrecht des Gegenüber erkennen und wahren, Zeit geben …

Ich habe den Malerbetrieb meines Vater Paul Hense (1912 – 1988) nicht übernommen.

Den Spruch gleichwohl … er ist haltbar …

In accordance with tradition, it was expected in the 1950s that a son would take over the business when he was older. For this to happen, he had to be introduced to the trade in time.

So, in the school holidays, for example, the task in hand was applying paint to furniture, as well as to technical gadgets and appliances made of metal. These had to be taken apart and put together again after the painting job was finished and the paint was dry and completely dry – not really a job for painters and decorators but rather for metal workers, cabinet makers, electricians, and mechanics. Nonetheless, it had to be done.

However, my father was somebody who knew how to do it, how to get there. And quite by the by, he said to me:

And this is how I have to write it: the 3 dots at the beginning show his casualness; the 4 (only) words give the ‘message’, and, at the end, NO fullstop, let alone an exclamation mark. A saying/motto works because it is spoken and heard, not because it is written down – or, even worse, set in stone.

It is a way of saying that one must do justice to the material / task, and that I also should / can / may / will / must do myself justice.

Resonating through all of this is the I-You relationship, a sense of connectedness, a recognition and honouring of the identity of the other, and allowing for time…

Can we find stillness in movement, and movement in stillness?

As we are forced to stop, we crave to move. As we are forced to move, we crave to stop. The COVID-19 lockdown forced us to halt. It pinned us to the bottom of an ocean of uncertainty.

The sea may look static from a distance, but it never stops.

Currents are moving within its vastness. Rivers are flowing in.

Fish are shoaling. Dolphins jumping, sharks attacking, whales spraying timelessly. Things are always moving inside, outside, and beyond the body of water, though it may appear motionless. The challenge for us is finding stillness in movement, and movement in stillness.

Können wir Stille in der Bewegung finden, und Be­ wegung in der Stille?

Wenn wir zum Anhalten gezwungen werden, drängt es uns in die Bewegung. Wenn wir gezwungen werden uns zu bewegen, verspüren wir den Drang zum Anhalten. Der Covid-19-Lockdown hat uns zum Anhalten gezwungen. Wir stecken fest in der Tiefe eines Ozeans der Ungewissheit. Das Meer mag aus der Entfernung statisch erscheinen, aber es macht nie Halt.

In seiner riesigen Weite ein stetes Strömen, Einmünden von Flüssen, Schwärmen von Fischen, Hochschnellen von Delfinen und das unaufhörliche Blasen der Wale. Es ist immer etwas in Bewegung, sei es im Wasser, an seiner Oberfläche oder auch in der Luft, auch wenn es uns nicht so erscheinen mag.

New life always finds a way ...

Nature is a miracle. I stood in awe of the beauty of this miniature bloom that sprouted from the cobbled pavement.37 This delicate, bright yellow, punchy purple pansy brought great joy as I rushed along the busy city street. It called me to stop.

To look. To ponder on the immense delight that this new life brought. Despite the harshest conditions, the little flower had survived. It was blossoming and smiling at the world.

New life always finds a way, even through the tiniest crack in a pavement.

Neues Leben findet immer einen Weg ...

Die Natur ist ein Wunder. Ich stand ehrfürchtig vor der Schönheit dieser Miniaturblüte, die aus dem Kopfstein­pflaster hervorspross.38 Dieses zart leuchtend gelbe, kräftig violette Stiefmütterchen bereitete mir große Freude, als ich in der Großstadt die belebte Straße hinuntereilte. Es brachte mich dazu, stehen zu bleiben.

Zu schauen. Und zu Sinnieren über das Hochgefühl, dass dieses neue Leben in mir auslöste. Trotz härtester Bedingungen hatte die kleine Blume überlebt, sie blühte und lächelte in die Welt hinaus.
