A Message from Sheri Greenbaum, Board President In 2016, our daughter Jordyn ’25 walked into Schechter as a tiny kindergartner, beginning what would become the journey of a lifetime, not just for her, but for our entire family. Two years later, her brother Jake ’27 joined her, and for the past 10 years, Schechter has been our partner in raising our children.

With Jordyn now in high school at RZJHS and Jake entering 8th grade, my husband Steve ’80 and I can look back at our journey as parents in its entirety. We are constantly overcome with feelings of gratitude that we were able to give our children and our family the gift of Schechter — and what a gift it is.

We always knew our children would receive a superb education, but it was everything beyond the classroom that made Schechter one of the best decisions we could have made. A Message from Nanci Caplan, Head of School It is an incredible honor to begin my tenure as Head of School. For more than a decade, Schechter has been my professional home. It is where I have grown as an educator, a leader, and a member of this extraordinary community. It is also where I have witnessed something truly special: a school where every child is known, valued, and encouraged to discover their strengths, pursue their passions, and make a meaningful impact on the world around them.

Schechter is also deeply personal to me. It is where my husband, Ben, discovered his love of Jewish life and where my father-in-law, Alan z”l, was a passionate leader and volunteer.

When Ben and I chose Schechter for our daughters, Dani ’27 and Sofia ’29, I gained an even deeper appreciation for our school. Experiencing Schechter as both an educator and a parent has only strengthened my belief in the transformative power of a Schechter education.

A Welcoming Space to Build Community When Bill Silverstein ’79 recalls his years at Schechter, one of his favorite memories is hot dog day, held every Thursday. So when Silverstein Commons was completed last fall, Bill knew exactly how he wanted to celebrate. He and his brother, Tom ’77, and their families sponsored a hot dog lunch for the entire school. As students and tzevet filled the new space, enjoying lunch with friends and colleagues, Bill’s vision came to life.

“We wanted to create something that was so much more than a cafeteria,” Bill said. “We envisioned a place where students, families, alumni, and friends could come together for all kinds of occasions and feel the strength of the Schechter community.”

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the Silverstein family, what was once a tired cafeteria is now a warm and welcoming gathering place. From daily lunches to holiday and milestone celebrations, community gatherings, alumni reunions, and special events, Silverstein Commons brings people together and strengthens the connections that make Schechter so special.

Celebrating Biruk’s Curiosity and Bright Spirit Everyone who knew Biruk Shai Silvers z”l recalls that his smile could light up a room. He brought joy, curiosity, and energy wherever he went.

Biruk passed away too young, and left a huge hole in the family.

Biruk loved his years at Schechter, where he found teachers who were devoted to nurturing his unique spirit. When Katy and Josh Silvers and their family began thinking about how to honor Biruk’s memory, they wanted a tribute that reflected the qualities that made him so special.

When they learned about the Makerspace at Schechter, they immediately knew it was the right place.

Filled with curiosity, creativity, and possibility, the Makerspace reflects the spirit that made Biruk so memorable. Here, students imagine, build, experiment, and bring their ideas to life.

The room dedication is being funded through the Biruk Shai Silvers Foundation, founded in his memory. As the sign outside of the Makerspace expresses, he will remain “forever joyful, forever young, inspiring curious minds to build and dream.”

A Legacy of Joy for the Outdoor Playspace For Schechter alumna Nicole Drexler ’88, naming the outdoor playspace at the Ginsburg Early Childhood Center as the Berz PlayGround is a lasting tribute to her mother, Bonnie Joy Berz z’’l, and to the school that provided a sense of safety and belonging throughout her childhood.

The gift was made possible through the Joy of Life Foundation established in her mother’s memory. Watching Schechter’s young ones at play, she knew it was the place to make a lasting gift.

“I’ve always believed there’s nothing better than free play,” she said. “Children use their imagination, their bodies, and their minds. It’s a chance to move, explore, escape, and reset. That’s exactly what I wanted to support.”

“Schechter was my foundation,” Nicole added. “Those formative years stay with you forever. Making this gift from the Joy of Life Foundation to Schecter was an obvious choice for me.”

Building Strong Community Partnerships During FY26, Schechter introduced the Community Partner Sponsorship Program, giving businesses new opportunities to support the school during and beyond the annual Golf Outing. Community partners receive year-round recognition through Schechter’s website, social media, school publications and special initiatives, including our new cookbook, alphabet soup II, and a community banner displayed at school events.

A Legacy Rooted in Jewish Education During the year, Schechter received two generous gifts through the estates of Lila and Izzie Weinzweig.

Their daughter, Laurie Wakschlag ’72, shares why leaving a legacy to Schechter was so meaningful to her parents.

I can’t think of a more fitting legacy for our parents, Izzie and Lila Weinzweig, than their bequest to Solomon Schechter Day School. They were a very activist couple along the spectrum of Jewish and Israel engagement, and their passion for Jewish education in general, and Schechter in particular, was at the core of their commitments.

Growing up, the backdrop of our family life was the evening meetings they were constantly attending, and more often than not, these were for Schechter.

Lila was a permanent and beloved substitute teacher at Schechter, and her relationships with its teachers and students served as the tapestry of her professional life. She never forgot a student’s name and always kept track of their lives well after graduation, and this was before the internet! Schechter’s leadership and teaching staff were among her closest friends, all sharing her passion for Jewish education as a pathway to lifelong engagement.

Izzie was deeply engaged with the Schechter Board and its educational committees. As a mathematician, there was nothing he enjoyed more than helping others learn to love math as he did, a heavy lift for many! There are many fond memories of Schechter teachers sitting around our kitchen table with him as he patiently explained ’the new math’ and its pedagogy.

Most importantly, ever since they joined the Schechter family close to its inception, they humbly and generously devoted their energy, vision and tireless efforts to helping it thrive. Three of their children, Ari, Carmi and me, graduated from Schechter.

Indeed, Ari was in the first graduating class!

They also took great pride in Keshet’s partnership with Schechter and in seeing two of their grandchildren, Tmima and Efraim, graduate from this program.

Ready, Set, Ride, and Imagine!

This year, our early childhood students can pedal their way around the new Trike Station and Roadway at the Berz PlayGround. This special play area is dedicated in memory of Dr. Steven Steinberg z”l, beloved father of Zahava Steinberg Berman, Director of the Ginsburg ECC. Made possible through the generosity of many donors, the Roadway is a fitting tribute to Steve’s lifelong love of biking, the joy he found in connecting with others, and his deep commitment to Jewish learning and values.

“Steve loved to ride and would bike anytime, anywhere, with anyone. When he could no longer ride outdoors because of his Parkinson’s disease, he took to the stationary bike,” shared his wife, Teri. “Naming the bicycle roadway in his memory feels especially fitting at Schechter, a school whose approach to education and Jewish values Steve and I have always admired. We hope it will be filled with children riding, laughing, learning, and experiencing the joy and connection that meant so much to Steve.”

Just around the bend, the Imagination Station invites children to dream, create, and see where their ideas take them. The space is being dedicated through the generosity of Bob Greenstein and his family, celebrating the curiosity, creativity, and wonder at the heart of early childhood learning.

“We are thrilled to dedicate the Imagination Station, in addition to supporting the Roadway, in memory of my longtime friend Steve Steinberg z”l,” Bob said.

“We hope these spaces will give children the freedom to imagine, explore, and experience the joy that Steve brought to so many people.”

Reimagining the Journey: Deepening Bonds and Jewish Identity

For Schechter students, the 8th grade Israel trip is a capstone experience that brings years of Jewish learning, identity, and community to life. While the war made travel to Israel impossible, Schechter’s leadership worked closely with families to create a different but equally meaningful opportunity: a two-week journey through Prague, Vienna, and Budapest.

As they walked the streets of Jewish Europe, visited historic synagogues and memorials, and prayed together, students gained a deeper understanding of the resilience and richness of Jewish life. Along the way, they strengthened friendships and created memories that will stay with them long after graduation.

“Having staffed the Schechter 8th grade Israel trip periodically for more than 20 years, beginning with Schechter’s very first trip, I know how powerful it is for students to travel with their classmates. While we all would have preferred to be in Israel, this journey through Jewish Europe was incredibly worthwhile,” said Dr. David Hakimian (pictured far right with students), one of the chaperones.* “I was visiting many of these sites for the first time, and experiencing them through the students’ eyes taught me as well,”he added. “Watching their ’aha’ moments, seeing them bond as a class, and witnessing them draw upon their years of learning at Schechter reminded me how important these experiences are for our students.”

We are grateful to Dr. David Hakimian, Avi Allali, Faye Bearman, Andrea Berlow and Suzanne Mishkin for chaperoning the 8th grade trip. From Israel and Jewish Europe to Washington, D.C., Outdoor Education, and experiences throughout Chicago, learning at Schechter comes to life beyond the classroom and is made possible by the generous support of our community.

Endowment Fund Honors Lena’s Legacy Our Schechter community came together in a powerful way to honor Dr. Lena Kushnir ’88, raising nearly $600,000 to establish the Lena Kushnir Fund for Impact, Innovation, and Excellence.

Created through the Or L’Atid (A Light for the Future) Campaign, the endowment fund celebrates Lena’s extraordinary legacy as an alumna, parent, educator, principal, and Head of School. It will provide lasting support for academic excellence in general and Jewish Studies, innovation and creativity, and the exceptional educators who are the heart of our school.

Under the leadership of Campaign Co-Chairs Maryl and Medwin Dayan and Melissa ’79 and Marc Spellman, the campaign far surpassed its original $250,000 goal.

Speaking on behalf of the campaign co-chairs at an event in her honor, Melissa shared, “Lena, this is your legacy: a community that shows up, gives back, and believes deeply in what Schechter makes possible.”

Chai Five Challenge Shows the Power of Community Each March, our annual Chai Five Challenge gives our Schechter community 48 hours to come together in support of our school.

This year, we reached our initial goal and secured a $100,000 challenge gift. With momentum building, two donors encouraged us to aim “chai-er,” offering an additional $36,000 if we reached 613 gifts.

B’yachad, together, we surpassed that goal. More than 620 donations of $18 or more, combined with the generous support of our sponsors, raised over $200,000 for Schechter.

Farewell Reception Celebrates Their Lasting Impact In May, nearly 400 members of the Schechter community gathered in the Etta and David Jonas Gymnasium for a heartfelt farewell tribute to (from left): Dr. Lena Kushnir ’88, visionary Head of School; Suzy Hakimian, beloved 7th-8th grade science teacher; and Noa Padowitz, dedicated 5th-8th grade Assistant Principal.

Lena’s leadership as our proud Head of School guided our school with vision, heart, and deep commitment. Suzy’s charismatic teaching during her 37 years at Schechter sparked curiosity, fostered a genuine love of science, and shaped generations of students. Noa’s impact was felt in the relationships she built and the care she brought to our community.
