Building a foundation for life, learning, and identity

Our mission, vision, and values are at the heart of everything we do.

Every day, our outstanding teachers embrace our mission to ignite our students’ Jewish souls, educate them to their highest potential, and empower them to use their knowledge, skills, and creativity to enrich our world.

Our vision of generations of engaged Jewish citizens who make our community and the world a better place is deeply embedded in our educational approach.

Our core values inform every decision we make — from our curriculum to our programs and our guiding principles for our school community.

Through our mission, vision, and values, we create a dynamic, nurturing, and joyful learning environment committed to academic excellence — inspiring students to believe in themselves, feel a strong sense of community, connect deeply with our Jewish heritage, and make a positive impact on our world.

IT ALL STARTS HERE

At Schechter, we are building the future –for our students and our Jewish community.

We focus on our students’ academic growth and well-being — helping them to become curious learners, critical thinkers, and innovative problem-solvers.

We support their social and emotional development and foster confidence, compassion, and resilience — enabling them to build meaningful relationships and contribute positively to society.

Our immersive and joyful Jewish life and learning experiences strengthen their Jewish identity — deeping their connection to Jewish culture, traditions, values, and the Hebrew language, and nurturing their love of and pride in Israel.

By investing in Schechter, you are not only helping to shape the future of our students, you are helping to secure a strong and vibrant future for our Jewish community.

Todah Rabah. Thank you for your support and partnership.

A message from the Head of School and Board President

The

2023-2024 school year began as we welcomed 433 students and their families to our Sager School and Ginsburg Early Childhood Center. The halls and classrooms came alive with the excitement and joy of learning within our vibrant school community.

On October 7, our world changed with the devastating news from Israel. We mourned the loss of lives and prayed for a swift resolution to the war, for the safe return of the hostages, and for healing.

Our priority was ensuring Schechter remained a safe place for students to learn and grow. Our tzevet (faculty and staff) went above and beyond, supported by our parent organization, Board, and educational leadership.

A week later, over 500 people joined together at our “Schechter Stands with Israel” event to express solidarity with Israel and to support alumni and others serving in the IDF. Throughout the year, we also held programs to help our community navigate emotions and conversations about the conflict and hear testimonies of survivors of the attack.

When Israeli parents needed a safe place to educate their children, we welcomed 24 students and their families, tuition-free. We provided vital resources to ease their transition, thanks to funding from JUF and our community.

During the school year, we educated and celebrated our students while we also demonstrated our deep commitment to Israel. We are proud of our community’s ability to pause to recognize times of joy and sorrow, and always support one another.

As you read this report, we hope you will share our pride in our students’ achievements, our outstanding tzevet, and our vibrant and supportive community.

We continue to keep Israel in our hearts and in our prayers as we embark on the new school year.

With tremendous gratitude, Dr. Lena Kushnir, (’88) Proud Head of School Ben Fisher, Schechter Board President

A NOTE OF GRATITUDE FROM ONE OF OUR ISRAELI FAMILIES

Aviv (center) is pictured with his 5th grade classmates before returning to Israel. Dear Schechter Community,

In these circumstances of war, our family found ourselves in Deerfield. We want to thank you so much for welcoming us into your community and school. Everyone has been so wonderful to us, from the Schechter staff to the parents and students. We received such a warm and loving welcome, making our children feel safe and at home. Every single detail has been heartwarming and has helped us so much during these difficult days. Wishing and waiting for better days when we would love to give back in Israel.

Abe, Maya, Alma, and Aviv Doron

2023-2024 highlights of the year

Exciting new initiative: making tuition more affordable than ever

We are thrilled to announce a groundbreaking effort to make a Schechter education more accessible for our community.

Last September, our school was selected as one of five K-8 Jewish day schools in the Chicago area to participate in the prestigious Tuition Accessibility Partnership (TAP) Fund, powered by Crown Family Philanthropies, a Chicago-based foundation dedicated to partnering with its communities to effect just and lasting social impact across generations.

This innovative program introduces a new tuition model designed to ease the financial burden for families with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) between $200,000 and $350,000 by capping tuition at just 12% of their AGI regardless of the number of children enrolled.

Building on this momentum, our Board approved two significant affordability measures for the 2024-2025 academic year:

We received full accreditation from ISACS

• A 0% increase in tuition for the FY25 school year

• An expanded TAP model thanks to the support of the David and Etta Jonas Family Foundation

Families with an AGI between $100,000 and $200,000 will have a tuition cap of 12% of their AGI, and families with an AGI above $350,000 will have a tuition cap of 14% of their AGI regardless of the number of children enrolled.

Additionally, we are proud to offer our robust Flexible Tuition Program (tuition assistance) for families with an AGI under $100,000 or those needing extra assistance.

A NOTE OF GRATITUDE FROM ONE OF OUR ISRAELI FAMILIES

Our Flexible Tuition Program is made possible through the generosity of our supporters, with special thanks to the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago, the Saffir Family, Crown Family Philanthropies, the David and Etta Jonas Family Foundation, the Bernard Heerey Family Foundation, and the Jordan A. Feldman Scholarship Fund.

For more information on our tuition affordability model go to: schechter.org/affording-schechter/

In April, after a two-year self study, we hosted the Independent Schools of the Central States (ISACS) review committee as part of a seven-year accreditation cycle. For four days, the team immersed themselves in every aspect of our school community.

Following their visit, we received several commendations for our:

• commitment to academic excellence

• welcoming environment

• investment in faculty collaboration and development

• dedication to meeting individual student needs

• strong Jewish values

We are proud that we were once again granted full accreditation. This means that as an educational institution we are committed to learning, growth, and continuous improvement in all areas.

Our ongoing commitment to academic excellence and student achievement

At Schechter, our mission to educate students to their highest potential goes beyond words; it’s a daily pursuit. We ensure that every student is actively engaged in learning, whether they require extra support or additional challenge. Our instructional coaches collaborate with content leaders in math, science, social studies, language arts, Hebrew, and Judaic Studies to analyze student data, review standards, and implement strategies to enhance each student’s progress.

Our dedicated teachers provide tailored support in and out of the classroom through differentiated instruction, push-in and pull-out models, and research-based strategies.

By continually seeking out the latest research, such as our early adoption of the science of reading, we strive to stay ahead of the curve and foster growth for every learner. This commitment to innovation and excellence drives our mission forward, ensuring that Schechter students reach their full potential.

Schechter/Keshet Kindergarten Partnership

After extensive research and collaboration, we launched an exciting partnership with Keshet to blend the best of Schechter’s joyful and vibrant learning environment with the added support and expertise of Keshet.

Together, we have created an even more inclusive kindergarten classroom where children can flourish academically, socially, and emotionally. We are thrilled to be working together to foster the growth of students in a nurturing and inclusive community of belonging.

Thank you to JUF’s Day School Innovation Fund for its support of the Schechter/Keshet kindergarten program.

SunDay FunDay drop-in program

This year, we introduced a new monthly program for families with 3-6-year-olds to help them discover all that Schechter has to offer. More than 80 families participated in this exciting series of activities led by members of our Schechter team and community. We look forward to welcoming many of these families to Schechter, and are excited to build on this program during the 2024-2025 school year.

Your Impact: A year in photos

One of our founding presidents, Dr. A.I. “Izzy” Weinzweig, said that something remarkable happens every day at Schechter. This is still true today. Take a look at some of the special events throughout the school year.

21st annual golf outing raises $170,000+

On August 7, the 21st annual Schechter golf outing at Rolling Green Country Club in Arlington Heights was a resounding success. Our community came together on a picture-perfect day thanks to the leadership of our dynamic co-chairs, Adam Schneiderman and Kyle Stone, and their committee. Thank you to our generous sponsors, enthusiastic participants, and amazing volunteers.

Families kick-off the year together

On Sunday, August 20, the Northbrook Campus was the place to be for Schechter families. Thank you to our dedicated PO and volunteers for making our Back To School Fun event the perfect way to kickstart the school year!

Friendship & fun at 2nd annual game night

On September 12, we welcomed more than 100 enthusiastic Canasta, Mahjong, Bridge players and more to our 2nd annual game night. We loved seeing so many familiar faces and new friends gathered in our gym. Thank you to our event co-chairs, Kelley Deutsch and Jodi Epstein, and their committee for a great event to support our school!

100+ meals delivered to 95 families through Maot Chitim partnership

On September 10, the spirit of giving was in full force as Schechter families participated in the 7th annual Rosh Hashanah tradition with Maot Chitim. Together, they unloaded the truck, packed up their cars, and delivered over 100 meal boxes to 95 families in need across Chicago’s Northwest suburbs. This mitzvah project, one of many throughout the year, exemplifies our Schechter community’s commitment to giving back.

An evening of gratitude for Schechter benefactors and board presidents

In November, 100 people gathered in the Silverstein Family Lobby for our annual Benefactors event. Following the events of October 7, we shared updates on Israel and our community’s response from Yinam Cohen, General Consul of Israel to the Midwest, and Lonnie Nasatir, JUF President (pictured below with Ben Fisher, Schechter president, and Dr. Lena Kushnir). We also dedicated a new plaque — lovingly created by Angie Adler — bearing the names of Schechter board presidents since the school’s founding in 1962.

“Each of our past presidents was willing to dream big, work hard, and sacrifice for our shared mission…and moved us forward embracing ahavat Yisrael, ensuring our students are prepared for Jewish life in a complex world.”

— Brian Hoffman, son of past president David Hoffman, and first Schechter graduate to serve as president

Big hearts and sweet treats to support Israel

Following October 7, our Schechter community found so many creative ways to support Israel – including a group of friends who set out to raise $36 during a day off from school selling treats and hot chocolate. Thanks to an outpouring of support, they raised $5,000 for the IDF and Magen David Adom. “We’re grateful to Schechter for helping us instill a love of Israel and tikkun olam in our children,” said Jodi Epstein, Schechter parent.

Students venture beyond the classroom

At the end of October, 6th graders participated in a four-day, immersive outdoor education program in Camp Lake, Wisconsin called Nature’s Classroom Institute (NCI). Students learned about science and nature, reflected on Jewish values, strengthened their sense of community, built self-esteem, and developed a greater understanding of the environment. NCI is one of many annual experiential programs for Schechter students.

Grandparents and special friends feel the love at Yom Orchim

In November, we welcomed over 500 grandparents and special friends to the Sager School for Yom Orchim. It was wonderful to witness their immense pride and joy as they experienced first-hand Schechter’s warm, nurturing, and innovative learning environment. The event reinforced the deep bond between generations and the lasting impact of our educational community.

Families celebrate at milestone ceremony

In November, our second graders beamed with pride as they were called up one by one to receive their first siddur in front of their kvelling teachers and families. This milestone ceremony is one of many special life cycle events throughout the school year that bring Schechter families together to celebrate their children’s deepening connection to Jewish life and learning. Thank you to the Albert and Fritzie Hoffman Suddurim Endowment Fund for providing the siddurim each year for our students.

Alumni pack the house at 3-on-3 basketball tournament

We loved welcoming over 80 alumni of all ages, parents of alumni, and friends before Thanksgiving for our 2nd annual 3-on-3 alumni basketball tournament. Thank you to the 12 participating alumni teams, the enthusiastic spectators, and Athletic Director Alicia Honan for coordinating the tournament.

Budding scientists at our early childhood center

In January, our little scientists at the Ginsburg ECC were abuzz with delight as they watched their very own lima beans sprout and grow! They were full of curiosity and wonder as they eagerly examined the changes in their sprouts and learned new vocabulary to describe their evolving plants. This is just one example of how our extraordinary early childhood educators value curiosity and thirst for knowledge. In addition to instilling a passion for Jewish life, the hands-on, authentic experiences at the ECC build essential lifelong learning skills. We are excited that the Ginsburg ECC relocated to Schechter’s Northbrook Campus for the 2024-2025 school year. This is an an opportunity to unify our school community and provide an even more outstanding program for our ECC students.

Siddur Ceremony

Schechter students have big ideas

In January, our 7th and 8th-graders engaged with experts across various fields — immersing themselves in activities from particle accelerators, newscasts, to crime labs. They capped off the month by creating innovative projects, from business plans to short films and podcasts. The one-of-a-kind “Big Idea” program allows students to take the reins of their own learning by designing month-long courses based on their interests and passions — collaborating with peers, teachers, and consultants. Thank you to the Harvey L. Miller Family Foundation for the seed funds to create and implement this program.

Read more about the program on our blog: https://schechter.org/bigideas24/

Basketball teams compete at tournament

In March, our boys and girls basketball teams took center stage at the Jewish Day School Basketball Tournament. Our girls’ team clinched victory, with Gaya earning the prestigious title of tournament MVP. Gaya and Yael secured well-deserved spots on the all-conference team. The boys team, after a hard-fought victory against CJDS, displayed remarkable skills in a closely contested match against Arie Crown. A shout out to Max for earning a well-deserved spot on the all conference team! Thank you to our coaches, parents, faculty, and staff who came out to cheer on our athletes.

Rising to the challenge for our kids

Also in March, our Schechter community united for our annual Chai Five Challenge. Every new and increased gift counted and brought us closer to our goal of 360 donations in 48 hours. We exceeded our goal – with over 415 donations – reaffirming the profound impact of our shared mission and values. Thank you to co-chairs Sarina Gerson, Zhanna Plotkin, and Adina Gabai, and to our generous sponsors for providing an additional $50,000 when we reached our goal.

There’s no place like Schechter for the holidays

We celebrated Purim with costumes, singing, dancing, and carnival fun. Beyond the festivities, students exchanged mishloach manot and participated in the mitzvah of Matanot L’evyonim by donating and delivering food and other items to The Ark to help individuals and families in need throughout metropolitan Chicago.

Thank you to our amazing PO volunteers

Between serving hot lunches at milestone events and holiday celebrations, packing holiday treats, organizing tzedakah and social action projects, raising funds for special initiatives, and providing gifts to recognize faculty and staff, our dedicated parents help make Schechter an inviting, supportive kehillah (community) for everyone.

Students cheer classmates for a bible contest on Yom Ha’Atzmaut

Cast, crews, and camaraderie highlight annual Sager School musical

In April, our talented actors, stage band members, and crews brought the whimsical world of Seussical Jr. to life, captivating audiences with two magical performances. The 100+ students not only showcased their diverse talents, they also radiated joy and enthusiasm, making the experience unforgettable for everyone involved.

Thank you to Dr. Andy and Marsha Rosenson for leading a fabulous team of volunteers, including 25-year musical veteran Danny Kahn, to create the spectacular set, vibrant costumes, musical accompaniment, and more. The production was a celebration of creativity, teamwork, and community. Additional thanks to the John R. Halligan Charitable Fund for its ongoing support of our musical and fine arts programming.

State-of-the-art technology sparks creativity and innovation

You could hear the cheers coming from the gym throughout the entire school – but they weren’t for a basketball game, they were for the Chidon HaTanach –an exciting bible contest on Yom Ha’Atzmaut! Ten students competed in front of their proud classmates and teachers and recalled verses, quotes, numbers, characters, and events in the Torah. Thank you to Rabbi Jonathan Bubis, Rav Beit HaSefer, for coordinating the contest, and to Chazzan Meital, and Rabbis Crane, Chapman, and Ozarowski for serving as judges.

Throughout the year, whether it’s in the classroom, vibrant art studio, cutting-edge innovation studio, or the dynamic makerspace, our students embarked on a continuous journey of discovery, invention, and self-expression. State-of-the-art 3D printers, a laser cutter, and a brand new kiln provided countless opportunities for students to unleash their imagination and creativity.

Class of 2020 reunites at Schechter

We were thrilled to welcome back alumni from the Class of 2020 for our annual reunion and college send-off. The event, held in our Greenbaum Library and Learning Commons, was filled with smiles, hugs, and laughter as alumni reconnected and reminisced with former classmates and teachers. The reunion was a great reminder of the strong bonds that make our Schechter community so special.

SCHECHTER PREPARES STUDENTS TO EXCEL IN HIGH SCHOOL

Schechter provided a rigorous curriculum that challenged me to think critically and develop strong study habits. And through our close-knit community, I learned the value of teamwork, empathy, and resilience. The supportive environment and emphasis on personal growth inspired me to build confidence and adaptability, which really helped me navigate challenges and opportunities throughout high school.”

A MESSAGE OF INCLUSION

“It’s a tradition at Schechter’s 8th grade graduation that each student makes a short speech. This year, Keshet student Sydney did just that with the support of her friend Hannah. This is a testament to the friendships that are built and the ways our students grow within our inclusive therapeutic day schools.

On behalf of Keshet, I’d like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone at Schechter who worked with us, never said no, and pulled off such a flawless graduation ceremony. Your Keshet family, as well as Sydney’s family, could not be more appreciative. Sydney and Hannah are still beaming! We’re so thrilled to be such strong partners.”

Lori Zisook, Kehset Inclusion Coordinator

Day School Class of 2024 / 5784

The Etta and David Jonas Gymnasium was filled with warmth, gratitude, and joy as proud families, teachers, and friends gathered for the last major milestone of the school year: the commencement ceremony of our newest alumni in the Class of 2024/5784. Before our graduates received their diplomas, they heard Dr. Lena Kushnir recite the words inspired by Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel one last time — a message that was so ingrained in their minds that they recited the words right along with her:

“EVERY ACTION COUNTS AND EVERY WORD HAS POWER SO CHOOSE ACTIONS AND WORDS THAT WILL MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER AND KINDER PLACE.”

Following the ceremony, the celebration continued in true Schechter style with a festive reception — complete with an over-the-top milkshake station, delicious passed appetizers, a balloon selfie wall, and lots of smiles, laughter, hugs, and photos. Arava Meital

Over my nine years at Schechter, I was taught to connect to my Jewish heritage and to develop a strong sense of Jewish identity. Schechter has given me the tools that I need to maintain my Jewish pride in the face of hate and adversity that I may encounter once I leave this school. On my journey through high school and beyond I will look back fondly on my Schechter experience knowing that it helped to make me into the person I am today.

Jonah Bornstein

Looking back at my nine years at Schechter, I have learned so much. Whether it is going from solving 2 + 2 to solving multi-step equations or barely being able to read Dr. Suess to reading 1,000page books, nothing has compared to everything the teachers and Schechter community has done for me. Schechter has helped me feel connected to my Jewish identity so much more than anywhere else or anyone else could have. Thank you to Schechter for the best nine years possible.

During the commencement ceremony, every graduate shared reflections about their Schechter experience. Watch more on our YouTube channel at: https://www.youtube.com/@solomonschechterdayschoolo2708

Your Impact: 2024/5784 Honor Roll of Annual Campaign Donors

Thank you to more than 1,000 individuals, families, corporations, organizations, and foundations that supported Schechter this fiscal year. Your philanthropic support allowed us to deliver an unparalleled academic experience to our students, and enabled us to provide more than $4 million in Flexible Tuition (tuition assistance) to 70% of our student body. Together, we are educating generations of engaged Jewish citizens who make our community and the world a better place.

JEWISH DAY SCHOOLS PRODUCE JEWISH LEADERS

“Data shows that a third of the leaders of Jewish communal institutions are day school alumni, and the proportion who are alumni or parents of day school students rises dramatically among younger leaders.

In recent months, it has been Jewish day school alumni who have taken the lead in the fight against antisemitism and anti-Zionism on college campuses. Professor Eitan Hersh (professor of political science at Tufts University, whose research focuses on US elections and civic participation) sees day school alumni taking on this leadership because they feel a sense of obligation to the Jewish community and they have a strong identity.”

M’DOR L’DOR: THE LEGACY CONTINUES

“As children of Holocaust survivors, we learned early on that although our parents’ families were completely killed, Judaism and Zionism did not die with them. We wanted to educate our children at Schechter so they could grow up amidst Jewish culture, celebrate within a Jewish calendar, incorporate Jewish values, learn ritual and the language of our people, and the importance of the State of Israel. Now more than ever, with Judaism and Zionism under attack, knowing that our grandchildren are continuing on this path at Schechter is of utmost importance to continuing the chain.”

Drs. Carol Rosenberg and Gordy Derman, parents of Schechter alums Ari (’98), Ben (’02), and Yali (’05) Derman, and Bubbe and Poppi of Lila, Nili, and Erez Derman.

TAITZ FAMILY REFLECTS ON 23 YEARS OF SCHECHTER

The Taitz family is one of many Schechter families whose last child graduated this year. However, they are the only family that has called Schechter their home away from home for 23 consecutive years!

Congratulations to Cindy and Ari Taitz and to their five Schechter graduates: Adam (’10), Jason (’12), Jonathan (’15), Daniel (’17), and Gabriella (’24).

“Thank you Schechter for 23 incredible years,” said Cindy Taitz. “You have given our children and family so much more than an excellent Jewish and academic education. We are so blessed, and while we may have no more kids to drop at school each morning, we will always stay connected and cherish our time as proud parents of five Schechter alumni and support Schechter for a new generation of students.”

SCHECHTER IS A COMMUNITY FOR LIFE

In January, 20 alumni from the Class of 2013 gathered for a pot-luck Shabbat dinner organized by Dina Plofsky, Alex Masover, Allyssa Cohen, and Gabe Strauss. Seth Katz reached out to OneTable and received a stipend to help cover the costs.

“I hadn’t seen some of my Schechter classmates since graduation, and we stayed for hours just talking and catching up,” Dina said. “We have a lasting bond that was formed through our years at Schechter. Being together reminded me of the strength of our Schechter community.”

Through your philanthropic support, we raised more than $12 million – 80% of campaign funds were invested in our endowment to help secure Schechter’s future and 20% were used to upgrade the Northbrook Campus, which houses the Sager School, to create a 21st century learning environment to support Jewish life and learning.

The Solomon Schechter Day School Endowment Foundation was created in partnership with the Jewish Federation’s Agency/Day School Endowment Program, which was established to ensure that Solomon Schechter Day School and our sister Agencies/Day Schools have the necessary resources to meet community needs. All endowment commitments are recognized as gifts to the Jewish Federation’s Centennial Campaign.

Our 5th graders are shown leading a Havdalah service in the Dayan Beit Knesset, marking the end of Shabbat after their annual Shabbaton.

We are deeply grateful to our generous supporters who help sustain our school. To learn more about how you can further support Schechter’s mission and strengthen both our current operations and future sustainability, please contact Tami Warshawsky, Director of Development, at tami.warshawsky@schechter.org, or Shira Rozgovich, Development and Events Manager, at shira.rozgovich@schechter.org.

At the end of the 2023-2024 school year, we said goodbye to the following members of our tzevet: Elana Dermer ’02, Marissa Gerchikov, Annie Kaplan, Talia Kramer ’14, and Rebecca Swislow. We are grateful for their devotion and service to our school.

“Schechter is one loving community that is an extension of my own family. I raised my children here and I am proud that I am helping to raise other people’s children here as well. It’s a community that you can lead on and count on and I feel fully supported as a teacher.”
