Letter from the Executive Director
Summer at the library is one of my favorite times of year. There is energy to the season, longer days, (hopefully) lighter schedules, and more space and time to explore something new.
Summer is also when we often hear about the “summer slide,” the learning loss that can occur when students are away from school. Research shows that children who read just 20 minutes a day are exposed to millions of words each year, significantly strengthening vocabulary, comprehension, critical thinking, and overall academic confidence. When reading stops, those gains can stall. When reading continues, growth continues.
But reading is about far more than preventing learning loss for me.

Reading sparks imagination. It builds empathy. It strengthens focus and invites curiosity. It reminds us that learning does not happen only in classrooms when we are young. It happens on front porches, at kitchen tables, during family read-alouds, and in quiet moments before bed. The habits formed in childhood often last a lifetime, shaping not only strong students but thoughtful, engaged adults.
Earlier this year, I shared that I am being more intentional about reading in my own life and within my family. We have made it a priority to build reading into our daily rhythm. When we travel, we often visit local libraries and independent bookstores along the way just to see what they have and experience the space. It is something my mom did for me when I was growing up, and it left a lasting impression of awe and inspiration for me. Those small moments helped shape my love of reading and knowledge, and now I am grateful to try and pass that tradition on. I am really looking forward to reading Contrapposto by Dave Eggers this summer... his first adult novel in years and one that explores universal themes of friendship, love, and the meaning of art. I have a feeling it will be a hot read this summer!
The summer challenge theme Plant a Seed, Read, feels so fitting. Every book opened is a seed planted. Some seeds grow knowledge. Some grow confidence. Others grow connection within families and across our community, or even a stronger connection to ourselves. When we nurture a love of reading, we are investing in something much bigger than a single season. Whether you are five or ninety-five, I invite and welcome you to participate this year. We would love to see you.
At Schaumburg Township District Library, we believe strong communities are rooted in lifelong learning. This summer, let’s plant seeds together and watch them grow.

Stay Rooted in Reading This Summer
Research from the National Summer Learning Association shows that elementary students who participate in at least five weeks of summer learning make meaningful gains in reading and build confidence, creativity, and social–emotional skills that last well beyond the classroom.
