Letter from the Executive Director In June, we asked all of you whether earlier Sunday hours at our Central Library would better meet our community’s needs. About 2,500 people participated, and based on what we read, I am proud and excited to share that our Library Board of Trustees approved a six-month pilot for expanded Sunday hours. Beginning September 13, the Central Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

During the pilot, we will track visits between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., checkouts, questions answered by staff, use of study and meeting spaces, and participation in programs and other services. We will also gather feedback from patrons and staff. This information will help us determine whether earlier Sunday hours should become permanent.

For us, this pilot is about more than the numbers, though data is important. It’s about giving you more opportunities to read, learn, create, and connect. More time for you to use your library.

As the Executive Director, one of the perks of my job is coming across thought-provoking books while walking through the stacks. Recently, I’ve been reading Nicholas Epley’s A Little More Social and Dana Suskind’s Human Raised. Both books keep me thinking again and again about inquisitiveness, lifelong learning, and the importance of genuine human connection, especially when technology and constant distractions compete for our attention.

It’s about giving you more opportunities to read, learn, create, and connect. More time for you to use your library.

The Library offers a place to step away from some of that noise. Children and families can read together, play, and learn. Students and academics can find a quieter place to focus. Adults can get help finding a book, searching for work, improving a résumé, or locating resources for an aging family member. You can also have a conversation, ask a staff member for help, or listen to a lecture. We want you to be able to do it all!

Sometimes reconnecting starts with a welcoming place and the time to use it.

Our mission statement captures it well: “We spark curiosity and enrich our community by connecting services, resources, and people.”

We look forward to welcoming you a little earlier on Sundays.

BANNED BOOKS October 4 through 10, 2026 Celebrate the freedom to read and the important role libraries play in providing access to a wide range of books and viewpoints. This year’s theme, “Let Books Be. Protect the Freedom to Read,” encourages readers to explore new ideas, discover diverse perspectives, and appreciate the value of free access to information.

ESSENTIAL EARLY LITERACY RESOURCES As a parent or caregiver, you are a child’s first and best teacher. When you talk, read, and sing with your children you’re building their brains and helping prepare them for school success.

We provide opportunities and resources for young children and their caregivers to develop school-readiness skills. All of our programming for children ages 0-5 is designed to support their growth in language, literacy, social-emotional skills, and more. Through engaging, play-based activities, we strive to make learning fun for the whole family, all for FREE with your Library card.

By integrating these five basic practices into your everyday routine, you can strengthen brain connections and develop the early literacy skills needed to learn to read and be prepared for school.

Beginning September 15, we are offering new monthly school-readiness activity packets for families of children ages 4 to 5 who have not yet started Kindergarten. These packets support District 54’s School Readiness initiative and are available at all Library locations – while supplies last.

New eResources for Parents

ParentTV offers on-demand resources that support parents in caring for their children from birth through the teenage years. The content has been curated and created by childhood experts, with over 2,000 videos and courses, covering topics such as behavior and development, mental health and well-being, and screen time and technology.

Playgarden Prep is a virtual preschool program for children ages 2-5. During weekdays, staff will retrieve items returned at the Metra Station, and items will be checked in within 72

Discover the art of cyanotype, a photographic printing process that uses sunlight or UV light to create beautiful prints—no drawing required. Arrange pressed leaves, feathers, lace, silhouettes, or other flat objects on specially treated paper to capture unique images.

Saturday, Oct. 17 • 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Help us keep art supplies out of landfills and into new loving homes. Bring new or gently used art supplies (paint, yarn, canvases, jewelry-making supplies) and swap them for something new. Donate your supplies and get a ticket to shop the swap a half hour early.

DIY Barn Quilts

Tuesday, Oct. 20 • 6-8:30 p.m.

Come make a wood barn quilt to hang in your home or on your mantle. Join Roberta Hudson, a needlework artist and folk-art painter who discovered barn quilts on a trip to North Carolina and now loves to share her knowledge. All materials provided.

We love stories and enjoy the outdoors! We need your help to bring these two activities together in a semi-permanent setup at Spring Valley Nature Center in Schaumburg. A StoryWalk® Project is a fun way for families to enjoy the outdoors while reading a book displayed along a path. Funds will support the installation of The StoryWalk® Project, in partnership with the Schaumburg Park District and the Schaumburg Park District Foundation.

The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Storywalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.

In June, we asked patrons for feedback about whether opening earlier on Sundays would be beneficial. With about 2500 responses, we are grateful that our community took the time to share their thoughts.

Stop by to share a cup of coffee with some of our Library Trustees and Executive Director Annie Miskewitch, and chat about all things Schaumburg Library. Grab some fun goodies, too – while supplies last.

Some comments: • This would be so helpful in my kids’ school life.

• We prefer the earlier hours and usually get here as soon as they open on Sundays.

Based on a majority of favorable responses, the Board of Library Trustees has agreed to a six-month pilot to open the Central Library at 10 a.m. We will evaluate the overall impact before making a permanent change.
