Dear Community,
For more than 80 years, we have served the residents of Spartanburg County, and the trust we earn is the key to our success.
As a fiduciary, we preserve, protect, grow, and distribute philanthropic resources for the greater good. We help strengthen nonprofit organizations and foster partnerships to address community challenges that no single organization can solve on its own. We build trust by using data to inform our efforts and centering our work in the relationships we develop with our donors, fundholders, partners, and community members.
In 2024, trust, data, and relationships guided our response to Hurricane Helene. After establishing the Disaster Relief Fund in 2020 following tornadoes in Spartanburg County, we were ready to quickly provide aid where it was needed most when another disaster occurred. The fund, and the system for efficiently receiving and distributing donations from countless individuals, groups, and companies, was already in place, allowing us to quickly distribute over $350,000 for immediate relief and to support ongoing recovery efforts.
Today, nonprofit organizations serving our community look to the Foundation and its donors and fundholders for support as many navigate fiscal uncertainty from funding cuts. These organizations provide food security, shelter, and education, transforming lives and working together toward our goal of building a stronger Spartanburg County for everyone.
Our Spartanburg Community Fund helps fuel the work of these organizations. Following the principle expressed by our founder, Mr. Walter Montgomery, who said, "Little drops of water make a big pond," every contribution to the fund makes a difference. Through this fund, we have supported organizations doing the work to mentor and educate our youth, provide nutritious food for those facing food insecurity, and support safe and affordable housing. With grants provided by this fund, organizations provided therapy to help children recover from abuse, empowered students to become the first in their families to pursue a college education and much more. Together, these efforts reflect the lasting impact we can make when we pool our resources to strengthen our community - one drop at a time.
We invite you to join us as you learn more about our mission-aligned, datainformed approach to improving the lives of all Spartanburg County residents.

Strategic Plan 2024 -2026
Alignment among Trustees, staff, and stakeholders helps the Foundation effectively carry out our strategy, sharpen communications, and expand awareness and engagement in the community. We lead with “improving the lives of all Spartanburg County residents” and remain data-informed to help all community members see themselves in our work. Led by our Trustees, committees that include community members and our staff team, we...
Work with individuals, families, businesses, and nonprofits to distribute philanthropic dollars to nonprofit organizations that meet a wide range of needs across our community.
We provide grants, training, networking opportunities, and meeting space in the Center for Philanthropy and serve as a knowledge source for Spartanburg’s ecosystem of nonprofit organizations.
We work with individuals, families, businesses, and nonprofits to create philanthropic accounts that meet their charitable goals. Whether through donor advised funds, scholarship funds, legacy giving, designated funds, or agency funds—we work to protect, preserve, and grow these community assets to ensure the ongoing flow of resources that strengthen our community.
Through events held locally, we share knowledge about community needs. This provides opportunities for our fundholders, donors, and broader community to become informed and get involved in meeting those needs.
We lead initiatives that bring diverse groups of people together to learn, collaborate, partner, and address issues to create positive change across the community.
We undertake all Foundation work with a positive, welcoming, and collaborative culture in which all members of our community can find their role in philanthropy and help our community thrive—now and for generations to come.

Navigating the Aftermath Disaster Relief
Hurricane Helene and its devastating impact was the leading headline in 2024. Homes and vehicles were destroyed. Days turned into weeks without access to electricity, clean water, food, gas, or internet service. Life shifted from normal to surreal, and for many, that disruption has yet to fully end. Even now, months later, some of our neighbors are still working to rebuild, recover, and regain stability.
Initially, the Spartanburg County Foundation’s mission to improve the lives of all Spartanburg County residents quickly focused on relief efforts. Like many others, we asked ourselves: What can we do right now?
This wasn’t the first time we’d faced such a question. When tornadoes struck our community in 2020, the Foundation responded by establishing the Spartanburg County Disaster Relief Fund Through generous donations, we were able to provide support where it was needed most. The fund has remained active ever since and was ready to begin distributing resources immediately when needs arose again.
Our strong relationships with nonprofit organizations, local government, and philanthropic partners provided a clear picture of where resources could be deployed quickly to help the community. We streamlined our Disaster Relief Fund grant process, and applications came pouring in within days of the storm. Grants totaling more than $350,000 provided generators, equipment for debris removal, housing, food, medical supplies, prescriptions, and household goods.
Today, the fund continues to support long-term recovery efforts. Our team members regularly engage with local, regional, and state emergency response and long-term recovery professionals, ensuring the Foundation continues to be collaborative throughout community recovery and resilience.
CENTERED IN RELATIONSHIPS
The Foundation’s work to support nonprofit organizations through initiatives such as Nonprofit Connect and Nonprofit Capacity Building Boot Camp helps develop relationships —not just between Foundation staff and nonprofit leaders, but between nonprofits. The entire ecosystem of organizations working to meet the needs of the community is regularly nourished and strengthened. When disaster struck, the connections in place, and the collective willingness to form new ones, helped nonprofits deliver direct services tailored to meet the unique post-storm needs of their communities.
Recognizing that the BRUH Mentor community center could serve as a central hub for relief efforts in Cowpens, the Foundation provided a disaster relief grant that helped spark partnerships between BRUH Mentors, the Town of Cowpens, and local churches. Together, they provided meals for 300 people a day in the immediate aftermath of the storm. Similar scenarios played out across Spartanburg County as disaster relief funds flowed from the Foundation to organizations like the Benjamin E. Mays Family Center (Pacolet), Greer Relief (Greer), Middle Tyger Community Center (Duncan, Lyman, Wellford), Upstate Family Resource Center (Boiling Springs, Chesnee), The Bethlehem Center (City of Spartanburg, Highland community), and others.
In Pacolet, the Benjamin E. Mays Family Center became a key example of this support in action. The Center celebrated its official opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 2, 2024, marking a significant milestone in meeting local needs. The Foundation has been a partner in bringing this place-based center to life since partially funding a feasibility study in 2021. A Disaster Relief Fund grant further strengthened the Center’s impact by helping serve the community in the aftermath of the storm.
“It really wasn’t until the Hurricane that the community saw what we offered and what we are trying to do.”
Jerry Rice Executive Director of Benjamin E. Mays Family Center
“We were able to do our part to help the Cowpens community because of our relationship with the Spartanburg County Foundation.”
Victor Durrah Founder & Executive Director of BRUH Mentor
What is a Community Foundation?
It is a unique type of philanthropic organization whose work is centered in a specific geographic area. The Spartanburg County Foundation is committed to improving the lives of all who live in our community—specifically, that means we work toward the greater good of all residents by serving our community as a trusted partner and key resource.

Spartanburg Community Fund
There’s only one Spartanburg, and there’s something special here.
Spartanburg County is a vibrant and diverse region, rich in history and culture. From the bustling downtown area to tranquil natural spaces and landmarks that honor the unique heritage of our smaller communities, we recognize that our community’s strength lies in the uniting of its individual elements, creating and strengthening the countywide fabric of life. The Spartanburg Community Fund represents the collective power of individuals and organizations coming together to support the County’s future. Donations to the fund empower nonprofits addressing a wide variety needs, creating lasting positive change across Spartanburg County.
We feel it when we come together
Individuals, organizations, and businesses collaborate, working toward shared goals and creating an impact greater than what could be achieved by working in isolation. We live in a community that has embraced this reality. While it could be replicated elsewhere, we often hear it is not. Our community's strength causes visitors to return and stay, and what helps job seekers decide to settle here.
Since 1943, our community has embraced the power of collective giving in the Spartanburg Community Fund. Though its name has changed over the years, what has remained constant is the fund’s purpose: to support the vital work of our community's nonprofits. The fund represents a shared vision for a brighter future across Spartanburg County. Donations to the
fund empower nonprofits to address a wide range of needs and drive lasting positive change throughout the county.
Since its inception, the fund has supported efforts that have shaped the natural, physical, cultural, and educational landscape we call home. However, many residents were unaware of the fund’s existence. Now, we are working to broaden awareness of this fund and its role as a cornerstone for the future we are building together. Grants from the fund fuel organizations focused on advancing educational achievement, economic mobility, quality of life, and nonprofit effectiveness – the hallmarks of our thriving community. Everyone can be a part of building our community's strength—today and for the future.

Grantmaking:
Guided by Trust, Informed by Data
Building trust and transparency between the Foundation and the nonprofit sector is key to improving the lives of all Spartanburg County residents and seeing everyone reach their full human potential.
The Foundation’s grantmaking opportunities, through the Spartanburg Community Fund, are designed to strengthen the nonprofit ecosystem by growing their capacity to serve and continuously improve. We collaborate closely with each grant partner to understand the data that informs their work, how impact is measured, and how we can support them as they serve across Spartanburg County.
CENTERING RELATIONSHIPS
Building relationships often begins with listening—taking the time to understand a nonprofit’s mission, the communities they serve, and the challenges they face. This connection often happens through one-on-one meetings and the Foundation’s capacity building initiatives. The Foundation offers training and workshops through initiatives like Nonprofit Connect learning sessions, Nonprofit Capacity Building Boot Camp, and additional fundraising sessions for Boot Camp participants. These events not only help build knowledge for participating organizations, but they also create an environment that fosters partnerships between organizations.
Impact stories from these three organizations were featured in our Annual Meeting Film. We also highlight our grant recipients through social media spotlights, our annual report, and Grantee Spotlight exhibits held in the Gallery of Philanthropy.

Data-Informed
A closer look at three organizations that received funding in 2024 highlights how data informs the Foundation's grantmaking decisions.
Project R.E.S.T.
74%
Increase in shelter occupancy
13%
Households face housing issues
Project R.E.S.T. (formerly Safe Homes - Rape Crisis Coalition) experienced a significant rise in need for its emergency domestic violence shelter in Spartanburg in 2024. At the same time, they faced a notable decrease in federal funding from VOCA (Victims of Crime Act). An estimated 5,000 residents need support to reclaim their lives after surviving domestic violence and sexual assault. Through listening and learning, the Foundation has fostered a deep understanding of the organization's evolution, processes, collaboration with other agencies, and approaches to meeting a datasupported community need. 1
Rebuilding Together Spartanburg
Many hardworking, older homeowners in the county live without functional kitchens or plumbing (bathrooms, showers) because they cannot afford the high cost of repairs. This data clearly illustrates a critical need. Through participation in the Foundation’s Nonprofit Capacity Building Boot Camp, Rebuilding Together Spartanburg (formerly Christmas in Action) and the Foundation's team built a stronger relationship. This led to deeper discussion on Rebuilding Together’s vision for sustainability and its partnerships that support home repair. 2

Residents face food insecurity
Addressing food insecurity in Spartanburg County requires a coordinated effort, and multiple organizations are rising to the challenge. Ruth’s Gleanings tackles the issue from two angles through its FoodShare and Gleanings programs, supported by an expanding network of community partners. Founder of Ruth’s Gleanings, Tonja Smith, has been involved with the Foundation as she built the organization’s capacity and refined its programs to meet this urgent need. The organization’s case for support was also backed by data in the Strategic Spartanburg Food Security Dashboard, resulting in a Spartanburg Community Fund grant.3

Strengthening Voices® Through The Grassroots Leadership Development Institute
In 2024, the Foundation's Grassroots Leadership Development Institute (GLDI) celebrated its 20th anniversary. Launched in 2004 as the Strengthening Voices® initiative under the leadership of Mary L. Thomas, and sustained through a partnership with the City of Spartanburg, this seven-month training program equips participants with the knowledge, skills, and resources to create positive change across the community.
Designed to amplify the voice of individuals who were affected by the complex issues that the community was trying to address, GLDI became the catalyst for launching the Foundation into a focus on impactful community leadership work. Through the years, GLDI has graduated leaders from neighborhood, nonprofit, business, government, and faith communities. The crosssection of individuals represented in the Alumni Association reflects a shared purpose in making
the Spartanburg County community the best place to live, work, and play.
In recognition of GLDI’s 20th Anniversary, the GLDI Alumni Association planned a series of events, unveiling a Leadership Library in the Center for Philanthropy, touring communities that have been transformed over 20 years, and engaging in 20 Weeks of Service. The initiative’s 20-year milestone would have culminated in an Anniversary Celebration and Graduation of the Class of 2024. After Hurricane Helene hit the community, planned celebratory activities shifted. In a true testament to the values embedded in the initiative's training, the Foundation and Alumni Association quickly pivoted the celebratory focus to serving the community. Several current class members and alumni joined forces – assisting with food distributions, cleanup efforts, debris removal, and helping local nonprofits continue their work in the face of hardships.
Honoring the 20 years of impact made through the Grassroots Leadership Development Institute, the Foundation invited GLDI alumni to nominate and vote to select 20 nonprofit organizations working across Spartanburg County to receive "Just Because" grants totaling $20,000. These grants were awarded to:

“Being a part of GLDI is one of the best decisions I made for myself. It really transformed Spartanburg for me, gave me a new toolset as a leader, and grew my network of partners and friends. Continuing to be connected with GLDI is a commitment to an organization that has really poured so much into me. One of my former students is a member of the current GLDI class. It’s a way for people to continue growing and learning and building the partnerships and networks that are having a huge impact on Spartanburg."
Dr. Alysa Handelsman
Assistant Professor of Anthropology & Community Sustainability Specialist, Wofford College
“Coming to this leadership class has built my character. I have made relationships and connections with people that I never would've thought I would've been able to connect with.”
Freddie Smith Volunteer, Highland Neighborhood Association
“GLDI has had a huge impact on my personal and professional development. I've seen the value of connectivity and what we can do when we come together and try to build something greater. Spartanburg County as a whole has truly benefited from GLDI, the leaders that have come from it, expound that kind of proficiency and we're just in a better position because of it.”
Cord Sgaglio
Assistant Park Operations Manager, Spartanburg County Parks & Recreation
“I thought I knew a lot about my community, but going through this program, I've learned that we are better together and by partnering with others you can create a lasting effect in your community. Now I'm very intentional in building relationships with others in my community so that we can make a better and greater impact together.”

No Age:
Generosity Across Generations
“We are honored so many individuals have entrusted their philanthropic resources to the Spartanburg County Foundation. Each one brings a unique take on how they can make a difference. Their work inspires and energizes us every day.”
Karen Nichols, Vice President of Philanthropic Services
In philanthropy, there are no minimum age requirements and no age limits. The growing number of young philanthropists opening funds with the Foundation is inspiring. Among the youngest were Adom Appiah (Ball for Good) in 2017 and Tradd Hodge (The Giver Foundation) in 2022. These funds continue to inspire other young philanthropists to their causes, and positively impact our community in many ways.
In 2024, college student Van Adamson-Thompson brought a new wave of excitement for the next generation of philanthropy in our community by opening the Middle Tyger Community
Scholarship Fund. He was inspired to open this fund from his own experience as a Byrnes High School student moving on to study economics at the University of North Carolina and civic engagement and social change at Duke University. He wanted to share his passion for serviceoriented leadership by providing guidance and funding support for juniors at Byrnes. He had just completed an internship at the White House when coming to the Foundation to open his fund. He now works as a Business Analyst at McKinsey & Company as he continues to build The Middle Tyger Community Scholarship Fund.
Van Adamson-Thompson
Middle Tyger Community Scholarship
The Middle Tyger Community Scholarship application process was patterned after Van Adamson-Thompson's work with Stanford University’s six pathways for public service and community engagement: Community-Engaged Research, Community Organizing and Activism, Direct Service, Philanthropy, Social Enterprise, and Governance. The application process includes a mentorship component and works within the six pathways to help high school juniors learn as they seek financial support.

Philanthropy Through Wofford's Launch Program
Sarah Butler, Launch Program Manager at Wofford College’s Career Center (and a GLDI alum) approached Foundation team members Ashley Whitt (SCF Vice President of Grants and Community Impact) and Karen Nichols (SCF Vice President of Philanthropic Services) to discuss ways to incorporate philanthropy in her class for Launch students. After a classroom presentation, Ashley and Karen surprised the students with a unique opportunity: to direct the Foundation's award of a "Just Because" grant to a local 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization.
The powerful result had students preparing pitches to help them choose a nonprofit to receive grant funds. They researched local organizations, learned the importance of “elevator” pitches, and crafted messaging to build a compelling case for support. Class members then voted for the best pitches, learning from each group’s approach, ultimately directing the Foundation's grant to Brown Girls Read. Through this hands-on learning process, the class gained a deeper understanding of philanthropy, community impact, and the power of giving along the way.
First Steps in Philanthropy from the Classroom
Dr. Alysa Handelsman, Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Community Sustainability Specialist at Wofford College (also a GLDI alum), challenged her students to engage with local community leaders. A visit to the Spartanburg County Foundation and an impromptu chat with President and CEO Troy Hanna led to another “Just Because” grant opportunity.
Wofford students Sydney Heslop, Maura Jackson, Carlee Mason, and Grant Owen chose to direct the grant to Housing360, the nonprofit affiliate of Spartanburg Housing. The students volunteered with the organization, helping in the Determined Minds afterschool program throughout the fall 2024 semester.
To Marking Milestones
Giving Has No Age Limits
These stories reflect a growing generation of young philanthropists inspired to give back early in their lives. In contrast, 105-year-old Spartanburg resident Hazel B. Jackson’s story sits on the other side of life’s spectrum and offers a powerful example of philanthropy later in life.
Dr. John Moses, Jr., a pediatrician and adolescent medicine specialist at Duke University, and his family have been friends with Ms. Jackson and her family for generations. Dr. Moses worked with Ms. Jackson’s grandson, Damon Stringer, to create the Hazel S. Jackson Nursing Educational Fund. Though neither Dr. Moses nor Mr. Stringer live or work in Spartanburg County, Ms. Jackson and her commitment to family, friends, her church, and helping others have inspired the scholarship fund that will provide scholarships for students who are members of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church who wish to pursue a nursing degree. Dr. Moses, Mr. Stringer, Ms. Jackson, family members, and Karen Nichols (SCF Vice President of Philanthropic Services) surprised Ms. Jackson with the presentation of the scholarship fund at a special luncheon.

Book of Memory
Friends and family members can honor a loved one by having their name recorded in the Book of Memory through a donation made to the Spartanburg Community Fund.
The Book of Memory is on permanent display at the Spartanburg County Foundation. In 2024, it was moved from our administrative building into the Gallery of Philanthropy in the Robert Hett Chapman III Center for Philanthropy. It is kept in a glass case to protect the book that has been recording the names of community members for more than 80 years. While its physical pages may be viewed, Ms. Rachel Canup completed the project to digitize the Book of Memory. She began serving as a Philanthropic Services Intern and continued working with the Foundation as a Philanthropic Services Associate until moving on to graduate school at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.
The Book of Memory offers a meaningful way to pay lasting tribute to those whose names and lives have been recorded in its pages. If you wish to make a donation in memory of a loved one, please call 864-582-0138.
Where Philanthropy Comes to Life
The Robert Hett Chapman III Center for Philanthropy serves as a hub for resources and activities that work together to improve the lives of all Spartanburg County residents.
With support from donors, the Center provides meeting and office space for Foundation staff and for nonprofit organizations and community groups aligned with the Foundation's mission —to improve the lives of all Spartanburg County residents. Liberty Fellowship, BMW Charities, and Beauty Marks for Girls work from the Center's Incubator Suite. Upstate Warrior Solution’s Spartanburg office is housed in the John T. Wardlaw Partner-in-Residence Suite.
In 2024, the Spartanburg County Foundation's Robert Hett Chapman III Center for Philanthropy welcomed over 2,000 visitors and hosted nearly 200 external meetings. Foundation team members created five engaging digital exhibits that were free to the public, in the
Center’s Gallery of Philanthropy. Some of the interactive kiosk displays included the second annual exhibit honoring Spartanburg County Educators, the African American Trailblazers exhibit honoring Black History Month, and 2024 Foundation Grantee Spotlights, each showcasing the remarkable contributions of local community members.
In celebration of its 100th Anniversary, The Duke Endowment curated a traveling exhibit, the first of its kind in Spartanburg. This exhibit offered visitors a deep dive into the Duke family's rich history and their enduring commitment to philanthropy, including many ways that The Duke Endowment grants have supported Spartanburg.
2024 Committee Volunteers
The Foundation is grateful for the many community members who serve as volunteers on committees that move forward the Foundation’s work to improve the lives of all Spartanburg County residents. Their personal and professional expertise helps guide the Trustees and staff in our areas of work to fulfill our fiduciary and community leadership roles. Community volunteers provide valuable insight as we continually work to promote philanthropy, encourage community engagement, and respond to community needs.

2024 Mary L. Thomas Award Recipient
Dr. Marquice Clark Principal, Cleveland Academy of Leadership
Dr. Clark received the Mary L. Thomas Award for Civic Leadership and Community Change at the Spartanburg County Foundation’s 2024 Annual Meeting held on Tuesday, March 26, 2024. His work with school faculty, staff, families, and students has led to a significant increase in student proficiency in ELA, Math, and Science, which resulted in the school’s first-ever “Excellent” SC report card rating. Dr. Clark’s support for students through a holistic view of their lives, family dynamics, family needs, and needs of the community inspired his nomination for the award. On November 25, 2024, Dr. Clark was named the 2025 South Carolina Elementary Principal of the Year.
“Dr. Clark has a fearless spirit for improving the lives of others. He has served as a catalyst for transformational change – in the lives of children, families, and his entire community. He has turned negative perceptions into positive realities. He has nurtured alliances with businesses, nonprofits, community groups, and grassroots leaders who have followed his charge toward a brighter future."

Foundation Team
We are fortunate to have a talented team of professionals working collaboratively, strategically, and with sincere passion for our mission to improve the lives of all Spartanburg County residents.
The Spartanburg County Foundation is dedicated to managing, protecting, and growing assets on behalf of our fundholders. Fundholders have the flexibility to direct how their funds are invested by allocating portions of their accounts by percentage across three available investment pools. Investment allocation information for each fund is now available on fund statements and in the GoFund portal for fundholders.
Mr. Jim Rentz, co-founder of the Woodruff High School Athletic Alumni Association (WHSAA) and its scholarship fund, was happy to take and share this photo honoring his connection with Charles Landrum, a recipient of the organization’s 2020 Spirit of Champions Scholarship. Mr. Landrum graduated from USC Upstate with his Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree in December 2024 and cared for Mr. Rentz during his hospital stay.
Laura Puckett-Boler is incoming 2025 Chair for Women Giving For Spartanburg. Since 2008, this powerful group has provided over $3.6 million in grants that support the work of Spartanburg County nonprofit organizations.

Business/Corporate Fundholders
Many businesses are committed to giving back, whether by supporting the communities where they operate or by aligning with causes that reflect their values, as part of their broader corporate philanthropy and business strategy.
The Foundation collaborates with each business leader to identify the best ways to achieve their philanthropic goals. By utilizing the Foundation’s resources and expertise, we help streamline the process, minimizing the time and effort to help companies engage in charitable giving while offering tax advantages and no minimum distribution requirements.
MCA, a Spartanburg-based company specializing in wireless communications, data, and security solutions, formed the MCA Foundation to launch its philanthropic work, establishing a Supporting Organization, Scholarship Fund, and a Designated Fund with the Foundation in 2024.
“It was really understanding all the nuances around the financial implications, tax implications, how we file things, set things up, and how we make sure we are doing things legally and in compliance. The Spartanburg County Foundation has been instrumental in making sure that happened and provided support along the way to make sure I had everything I needed to be successful.”
Marshall Varner Executive Director, MCA Foundation

7th Year Trustee Reflection
The invitation from Troy Hanna and Nancy Coté to become a Trustee was not only a huge surprise and one of the biggest honors in my life, it was the lifeline I needed to continue my work in our great community while transitioning into retirement. It was not only a lifeline; it was also life changing.
The workings of the Spartanburg County Foundation—its depth of influence, strong presence, and investment in our community to improve the lives of all Spartanburg County residents—are truly immeasurable.
To me, the Fountain in the Foundation’s logo represents its work in so many ways. First, without water, no living thing can survive. As a Trustee, I soon learned of the lives that have literally been saved by the Foundations’ work! Food pantries, soup kitchens, medical clinics, the response to COVID, mental health support—the list goes on and on.
The Foundation’s fountain also showers its water, providing life giving support onto non-profits which are in the trenches doing a lot of the work to improve the lives of all Spartanburg County residents, providing grant money and sustainability training with programs like Nonprofit Connect and Nonprofit Capacity Building Boot Camp. So many non-profits have been "watered" by the Foundation since 1943. And then there’s the ripple effect—the work of one, changes the lives of many. One fund created encourages others to create funds. One non-profit’s work encourages the creation of another non-profit or fund to address another need in our community.
We all know that as children we loved to throw a penny or other change into a fountain and make a wish! In 1943, Mr. Walter Montgomery did just that! He threw in $10,000 to begin the Foundation and to encourage others to do the same to improve the lives of all Spartanburg residents.
Today we have 1,189 funds where fundholders have pitched their “pennies” into the Foundation fountain to support their causes. The Foundation Trustees take their fiduciary duties to protect, preserve, and grow these resources seriously because there are over 356,000 Spartanburg residents depending on the Foundation and local nonprofits to make a difference.
Lastly, the fountain allows us to look in and see our reflection and the reflections of our brothers and sisters in our community. Are we seeing our best selves in terms of being a good neighbor? Am I a good neighbor to those brothers and sisters who aren’t like me? Am I happy with seeing the reflection of a Spartanburg County resident whose life needs help or improvement without taking action?
Perhaps that’s the hardest piece of the Foundation—the reflection piece. I believe the Foundation and its funds must endeavor to look at all peoples in all circumstances in our community to fulfill the calling of the Foundation—to improve the lives of all Spartanburg County residents. It sounds so simple yet so difficult to accomplish.
I am honored to have served as a Trustee and grateful for the trust shown to me. I thank the Lord every day for the opportunity. I encourage all to reflect and find a place within the Foundation’s fountain and flow of resources to improve lives across Spartanburg County.
