JON SCHMIDT OF THE PIANO GUYS Jon a ride to his car after class. They married in 1991, and decided to try a career in music.

The decision was made through a lot of prayer, and one that needed to be made and revisited repeatedly, because it was a long and arduous venture to try and succeed as a solo piano artist. In their most desperate financial times, the couple continued to seek divine direction to see if they should make a career change, but each time they felt like music was where they needed to be. They have 5 children, 2 girls and 3 boys. One of their daughters, Annie, died in a tragic hiking accident two years ago. This experience added to the Schmidt’s lessons of learning to trust in God in their lives.

Pianist and composer Jon Schmidt was born to German Immigrant parents, who gave him the gift of early education in music. Classical training fell on the fertile ground of Jon’s natural talents for music and hard work.

Schmidt began composing as early as age 11.

He started teaching piano lessons when most people get a driver’s license and he began a successful solo career in his early twenties.

Schmidt worried about a career in music.

He was offered a music scholarship to the University of Utah, but ended up studying English with plans to get an MBA. People kept pestering him over and over to play piano for them, which led him to risk renting a large concert hall to present himself to the public. The audience loved him. He has never gone back to his English and business plans.

Jon and his wife Michelle are both native Utahns. Jon grew up in Highland and Michelle grew up in Sandy. They both went to Norway on their LDS missions, but were not there at the same time. They met at the University of Utah where they both were English majors, but oddly never had a class together. But they did have an LDS Institute class together, and one day Michelle gave

Schmidt’s 20 year solo career included eight albums, seven piano books of original scores, thousands of performances, and numerous awards. He had a flair for the theatrical in his live performances, often performing an entire song upside down on the piano bench, putting on a funky wig, playing with his toes and beat boxing!

In 2013, Jon’s solo artistry merged into the formation of a partnership of four guys called The Piano Guys. With it came a contract with Sony Records, 1.7 billion hits on YouTube, sold-out concerts all over the world, and an LDS Church sponsored Face to Face youth event on the top of the Conference Center. Together, The Piano Guys create spectacular piano/cello video content in amazing locations. Their goal is humble—to inspire those that may listen.

Schmidt contributes not only as the onscreen piano talent, but he loves to throw out ideas and edit and revise until he has a refined and quality product. Jon finds his fire for the journey through seeing the joy of people who hear great music.

Jon loves Dunford chocolate doughnuts, Crown Burger onion rings with Fruit Punch, and a great dish of Beef Sukiyaki. Michelle loves big sycamore trees, reading a really good book, and anything dark chocolate.

“Actually, I had no intention of making this my career...,” Schmidt says. “A girl I was dating gave me a session in a recording studio for my birthday, so I went in and put down everything I’d written. That’s when things began.”

Father Schmidt was an operatic tenor who was soon putting together local choruses. Jon’s sister Rose-Anne - his only piano teacher - became a respected concert pianist. By age 11, young Jon was accompanying his father on the piano.

“I was always being accused of banging the keys,” he says. “When I was composing in high school I played everything full-on loud, full tilt.” Today, though most of his music has a sensitivity he attributes to his father, Schmidt has kept some of that old Jerry Lee Lewis thump. It makes him unique, and adds a touch of saloon to his salon music. “Contrast,” says Schmidt. “I learned that from the Masters. You have to create interest. People who write pop vocals can get away with repetition because the words always change. But in instrumental music you have to come up with interesting chords, melody lines and orchestrations. You have to keep things fresh.”

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT

KAREN BAIRD Karen Baird was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut. After her father passed away when she was 10, her brother, who was involved in the film industry, convinced their mother to move to California. It was in California that Karen had her first exposure to theater and was bitten by the “acting bug.”

“It is an honor and a pleasure to write about someone as lovely as Karen Baird. We have been running Hale Center Theater Orem for 33 years, and she and her husband H.K. have been with us since they moved to Utah in 1995. They were a grand team, a perfect partnership on stage and in real life. If we could give titles like they do in England, they would be Sir H.K. and Dame Karen Baird. Karen has played so many lead parts in our shows! She has innocently poisoned little old men in Arsenic and Old Lace; she has been a crotchety old English lady in Enchanted April; the crazy Mother in Barefoot in the Park; and as Betty in our current show The Foreigner.

She eventually became involved in the Los Angeles community theater scene and discovered how much theater people become family. This took a new turn when, during a production of The Boyfriend, she met her husband, the late H. K. Baird.

While opportunities to be on stage became less frequent as Karen raised four kids, being married to a high school drama teacher ensured continued exposure to and involvement in theater. Her children’s well being was a priority and she served as PTA president for multiple years, ultimately receiving the Honorary Service Award. It was also during this time she was able to direct her children in school productions of Great Expectations and The Wizard of Oz. One of the great joys of Karen’s life was spending each summer with her family in Jackson Hole, Wyoming where her husband produced and directed shows at the Pink Garter Theatre. The friendships and connections made from these productions remain a rich part of the Baird family’s lives.

Since moving to Utah in the late 1990’s, Karen has been a regular participant in local community theater, taking only a brief hiatus to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Stockholm,

She has brought the complete theater to tears in her portrayal of everyone’s favorite Grandmother in Over the River and Through the Woods (My personal favorite). Karen is the absolute professional in every sense of the word, kind and giving, selfless, brilliant timing in line delivery, always giving her all. She is a gift to this community!”

Sweden with her husband. She has performed in over 60 live productions in addition to many voice-overs, movies, commercials, and other video productions. Her ability to master accents and make characters come to life has brought great joy to audiences.

As Ethel said in Moon Over Buffalo, “Theater is our lifeline to humanity.” Perhaps it is this belief that has kept Karen so involved. Now in her 80’s, she has often said “I think this will be my last show.” But then a director comes along, knowing just who they need to play that special part, and the offer is too good to refuse. Audiences everywhere are glad Karen remains infected with the “acting bug.”

Karen Baird is my hero! I met Karen when I was 21 and was a member of the cast at the Pink Garter Summer Theatre in Jackson Hole, Wyoming... I learned so much from her as a young actor. She never gave less in a performance even though we played 7 nights a week for 106 consecutive performances. I have also directed Karen in shows at Hale Center Theater Orem..

I knew that If I cast Karen in a role it would be an audience pleaser!

The only drama involved in Karen’s performance and process happens on the stage – never off.

THEATRE

ROBINNE BOOTH

Robinne has been active in theater arts since the age of three when she started dancing and singing. Her directing debut was Jack in the Beanstalk at the age of 13, when she used her mother’s white sheets on the garage floor for Jack to emerge from the clouds. Sensing her daughter’s dramatic flair, Robinne’s mother put her in acting school at a professional theater in Houston, Texas.

Her first show here in Utah was Hello Dolly when she played Minnie Faye for PCT, and she’s never stopped sharing and developing her love for the magic of live theatre. Robinne has more than 50 years of theater experience, directing or performing in over 250 productions, on stages including Hale Center Theater Orem, Eccles, Capitol, Egyptian, Utah Lyric Opera, Covey Center for the Arts, Springville Playhouse, Payson Community Theater, Spanish Fork City and SCERA. She directed her first show at SCERA in 2000, when then Artistic Director David Whitlock asked her to direct Forever Plaid, which she directed several times thereafter.

Robinne’s acting resume is impressive. Some favorite roles are Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd, Marmee in Little Women, Adelaide in Guys and Dolls, Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods,

Ethel in Barefoot in the Park, Dotty in Noises Off, Dolly in Hello Dolly, Mrs. Bennett in Pride and Prejudice, The Chaperone in The Drowsy Chaperone and Mother Superior in Nunsense.

The first time she played Mother Superior was a complete surprise, and it makes for a great story: Robinne received a call from April at SCERA explaining that the actress playing Mother Superior had an accident and was not able to do the show. She asked if Robinne could take her place. Robinne asked “When do you open? April answered, “This Thursday night.” It was Monday, and Robinne responded “If you open Friday, I will do it.” So brave Robinne picked up a script the next day, and for the next three days she would leave her work to go to SCERA and spent hours blocking, memorizing songs, monologues and dances. Friday night as the curtain was about to go up, she thought “eat the elephant one bite at a time.” The curtain went up and she was a hit!

Robinne toured with MJ Productions in Evita, which was a wonderful lifetime experience!

Some of her favorite shows to direct have been ALL the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals, and anything Stephen Sondheim!

Connie Jackson Musical & Technical Director Merit Preparatory Academy Theater movies with BYU Television, training films for Intermountain Health Care, records, television commercials, radio and film. Her latest film was playing Sarah in the movie Abraham and Sarah with Messages of Christ and Scripture Central. She has been an emcee for the World Folkfest in Springville for many years. Robinne loves designing costumes and has costumed many theatre productions, including UVAA Opera Festival for three years.

During her career, all five of Robinne’s children and a granddaughter have joined her on stage. For the past 14 years, Robinne has taught Theater Arts at Merit Academy in Springville, but she still finds time to direct and perform. In her rare spare time, she enjoys watching classic movies, gardening, genealogy, tap dancing, and cooking. She has 20 grandchildren, and gives thanks to her children and awesome husband, Alan, for supporting her theater habit.

VISUAL ARTS

BYU CENTER FOR ANIMATION For most of BYU history, there was no animation program. But near the turn of the century, Brent Adams, then a Salt Lake City architectural designer, started commuting to Provo to teach evening classes. Bitten by the teaching bug, Brent ended his career in architecture and, before he knew it, had become the Founder at Animation of BYU.

Since its first film in 2004, the BYU Center for Animation and its student-produced films started turning the heads of entertainment executives. The program has won 18 Student Emmy Awards (Television Academy of Arts and Sciences) and 6 Student Academy Awards (Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences). Their films have played all over the world including Cannes, Annecy Animation Festival in France, Siggraph, Rio De Janeiro, and the Sundance Film Festival.

Ed Catmull (Co-creator/former President of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation) stated “BYU has risen to the top. BYU has an extraordinary program here.” Pixar, Sony Animation, and DreamWorks actively mentor the program. Additionally, Disney, Lucas Film, Weta Digital, Epic Games, Riot, Blizzard, Digital Domain and Warner Brothers Games all recruit graduates from BYU’s renowned program.

Through a series of miracles and generous donors, the vision of an animation program was starting to become a reality. Out of the blue, a company in Alabama donated a significant amount of computer hardware to the university. When Adams asked why, the company’s president answered, “I don’t know; it just felt right.” Not long after that, Ira A. Fulton stepped into the picture and purchased a supercomputer. Suddenly, BYU had the computing power to produce quality animation.

The BYU Center for Animation is a dynamic, hands-on program structured to provide students with the artistic and technological skill sets necessary for professional success in the animation, live-action, special effects, and game industries. Working collaboratively as a group of Animation, Computer Science Animation, Illustration, Media Arts and Commercial Music, students work together to make their own large group film. This collaborative experience has become a true testing ground for the education the students have acquired, and

“The Center has been honored in numerous publications including a six-page article in the New York Times on its impacts to the industry. The article referred to the Center as the “Dream Academy.” The Center has also been covered by the Hollywood Reporter, Variety, Delta Sky Magazine as well as every local newspaper and television station. The largest computer gaming magazine in China had a 7-page article on the quality of work coming out of the BYU program. The Center was honored by the Utah State Senate for its positive impact on the State of Utah.”

The program’s mission statement is to bring out the best in their students so that they can go forward and make an impact for good and create uplifting media. Brent Adams, the founder of the BYU Animation program said: “...If we can add something to the culture that makes people think about being better human beings — more productive, more kind, more forgiving — that’s what we want to do.”

Kelly Loosli, Director of the Center for Animation is the co-creator of the Animation Program at BYU. He teaches traditional animation, storyboarding, and screenwriting.

He is a 33-year veteran of the entertainment industry having worked extensively for commercials, television, and feature films for companies including DreamWorks and Disney. In 2010, Variety listed Loosli as one of the top ten professors in film and animation.

Most recently, Loosli produced two seasons of an animated series for BYU Broadcasting called Saving Me. He earned his BYU Bachelor of Arts in screenwriting in 1996.

MUSIC

KENNETH COPE High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. He later served a mission for the Church of JesusChrist of Latter-day Saints in Switzerland and France. He began his musical career by writing and recording the 1986 Especially For Youth (EFY) theme song and went on to compose more than 25 songs for the EFY Program.

Kenneth has produced twelve albums of his own, including Greater Than Us All, My Servant Joseph, and Women at the Well.

Some of his most known and beloved songs are His Hands, Never a Better Hero, Face to Face, Eden’s Garden, What Have I Done With His Name?, Broken, and Gethsemane. Kenneth has most recently created a dramatic, two-act musical for the stage about the life of Jesus Christ, titled Son of Man.

Kenneth tells us his purpose. He says: “I was born to point people to God—to give them hope, and a true sense of their immeasurable value in the eyes of their heavenly Parents and their Redeemer. Through song, through words, through every medium available to me, I am to proclaim my Lord’s glorious gospel, and do the greatest good I possibly can to my fellow human beings. And while I have all these artistic tools for my use, I am to accomplish my purpose through love.”

Kenneth was born in Salt Lake City, the third of six children. He grew up mostly in Houston, Texas, where he attended the

Recognizing Kenneth’s achievements, the Faith Centered Music Association and the Latter-day Saint Booksellers Association have honored him with numerous awards over the years including Male Vocalist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, and Album of the Year.

He wrote the ballad of my boyhood, His Hands, that I would hear my mother sing time and time again. To this day, I can’t repeat in my mind the lyrics of this song without getting emotional. One day as a young teenager, I went to work to help dad set up for a large string recording session. The session that day was an album called Hear My Praise. Little did I know that those melodies and messages would help mold me and become the chorus of comfort I needed on one of the most challenging days of my young adult life.

One of the most powerful experiences I have ever had with music happened at Kenneth’s home during the time he was working on Act One of Son of Man. He wanted to share some of the songs that he and other artists had completed the vocals on... he began to play Out of Darkness, mostly sung by Jessie Funk as the character Mary Magdalene. The song already had me in its beautiful grasp, but at the end and climax of the song, when Mary sings, “Let the wind blow, let the storms grow...” I was literally lifted out of my chair. Where Kenneth took it musically, the way it was sung, the orchestration— all of it together created an absolutely electric sensation in and through me. It was otherworldly.”

JENNIFER HILL BARLOW MFA, she married the love of her life, Blake, and the couple moved to New York City. After living there for only 3 days, Jenny auditioned and was offered a contract with the Radio City Christmas Spectacular where she danced for several years. Blake and Jenny welcomed their first son Dash into the world and moved back to Utah, where Jenny taught for BYU, U of U, and Ballet West Academy.

At the age of 8, Jennifer began her dance journey at the Clytie Adams School of Ballet in Kaysville. Jenny auditioned for Ballet West’s Nutcracker as a child, and was handpicked by Willam Christensen, founder of Ballet West, to perform the role of Clara for two years. Jenny committed herself to becoming a professional ballet dancer.

Her early training included scholarships to Ballet West Conservatory, Boston Ballet School, Berlin Ballet School in Germany, among others. At age 15, Jenny was offered a company contract with Ballet West, and after high school received the Willam F. Christensen full ride scholarship to the University of Utah Ballet Department where she was a principal dancer with the Utah Ballet Company and graduated with a BFA in Ballet Performance.

Jenny performed professionally with Cincinnati Ballet, Ballet West, Gaungzhou Ballet in China, and spent many summers performing at Tuacahn. She was personally cast by Willam F. Christensen as the lead Swanhilda in his ballet Coppélia, the last ballet he directed before his passing. Jenny began her graduate studies at University of Utah in choreography. In 2006, the Barlows founded Barlow Arts Conservatory, which grew from a basement studio in their home to three locations. As one of the state’s most reputable ballet schools, Barlow Arts was awarded Outstanding School three times, Choreographer Award six times, and its students have won four Grand Prix titles. Students have received scholarships and acceptances to the world’s most prestigious ballet schools and university dance programs including School of American Ballet, Jackie Kennedy Onassis School at ABT, Royal Ballet School of London, Princess Grace Academy in Monaco, Royal Winnipeg Ballet School of Canada, Berlin State Ballet School in Germany, International Ballet School in Italy, and Juilliard.

Many of the conservatory’s students continue to perform with professional companies.

Meagan Downey HCTO Production Manager Friend has created over 60 musicals, and directed and choreographed for Hale Centre Theatre Sandy, Hale Center Theater Orem, and Sundance Summer Theater. Favorite projects include An American in Paris, Daddy Long Legs, and the U.S Premiere of Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom The Musical which was named by Broadway World as the #1 Theater Production in Utah. She is a 7-time recipient of the Utah Best of State Choreography Medal.

Jenny and her husband Blake are members of the 42nd Club of Broadway and West End producers and investors. Personal involvement includes: Waitress (West End), A Christmas Carol (Broadway), and Hadestown (Broadway).

After running Barlow Arts Conservatory for 16 years, Jenny felt a strong pull to direct and choreograph full time in musical theater. She brokered a deal with Ballet West to purchase Barlow Arts in 2022 and retired from teaching.

Jenny is currently the Associate Artistic Director, Resident Director/Choreographer for HCTO, which will be moving to Pleasant Grove in 2025 and be renamed The Ruth.

a hard time finding the perfect cozy blanket for her daughter - one that was both fashionable and cozy. And so Sandi created the first adult-size Minky Couture blanket. Everyone in the hospital loved it! Sandi started having more blankets made to give as gifts to friends and family members. The blankets were an instant hit!

Sandi Hendry was born and raised in Orem.

She was a former Miss Orem and here’s a fun fact…she had her first kiss here at SCERA! With a warm and loving personality, she has always been one that stood out in a crowd with inner and outer beauty. Sandi graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Education and Business and was an elementary school teacher for 30 years.

After retiring from teaching, she worked in HR and Personnel for Mountain View Title, a company she owned and operated with her husband, Mike. In 2009, she added a third career - owner and founder of Minky Couture.

It all started when Sandi’s daughter became very ill and was hospitalized for several months.

Her daughter asked for a “big baby blanket” to snuggle up with during her recovery. Sandi had

She started designing her own blankets, using different combinations of fabrics. Each blanket was unique, created specifically for the recipient. Family and friends started asking if they could purchase the blankets to give to their own loved ones, and Minky Couture was born! The company has grown to be a very popular brand, not only in Utah, but all over the United States and the world. Sandi has opened six beautiful retail stores throughout Utah with over 250 employees.

Sandi’s love for the product, her customers, and giving back is top priority, and has led her to receive numerous recognitions and awards, including Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2019 and the Women in Business Athena Award in 2020. Minky Couture has also repeatedly achieved the “Best of State” Award.

Sandi has a heart of gold, and has kept generosity to the community top of mind as Minky Couture has grown. She donates to Hale Centre Theatre Sandy, Utah Valley Chamber, America’s Freedom Festival, Miss

Orem Scholarship Program, charity events and auctions, families in need, and many more.

She donates blankets to each of the concert performers at SCERA Shell Outdoor Theatre, who go back on tour with a Minky! Her “Heart of Minky” program donates thousands of Mini Minky blankets to NICUs all over the country.

These little mini blankets bring comfort and love to tiny babies who are born a little earlier than expected, and to their families who have something comforting and beautiful to provide for their baby. She literally loves to “blanket the world with love” one blanket at a time.

Sandi’s incredible business mind, her outstanding leadership qualities, and her kind heart have made her a true friend to the arts, and to families, communities and organizations across the state.

“Sandi may not have initially set out to make a business with generosity as THE CORE value, but she did. Sandi wakes up every day, thinking about how to blanket people with comfort and love.
