Cast of Characters
Jean Valjean ......................................................................................................... WILL MADSEN
Javert......................................................................................................................... FINN PARKS
What an incredible experience to be able to do this magnificent show with these magnificent kids and staff! The more I’ve gotten into the research of this story, the more I’ve come to appreciate what Victor Hugo was trying to say in 1862. The book had always been daunting in the past (I’d never flipped through pages in a book before, but Waterloo... what? Just a lot!) This time, I really wanted to understand the original story... Thank heavens for Audible ...and PBS ...and all of the folks who have brought it to life over the 40 years since it opened in London in1985.
To have a Broadway show endure as long as it has, there has to be a lot more than great “song and dance”; it has to touch our hearts and souls. And Les Mis does. So many stories within one show: the story of Jean Valjean as he makes difficult decision after difficult decision on his “road to Calvary,” and Javert, trying with all of his might to do what he is convinced is right. Mercy versus Justice - there’s a theme we could all take an introspective look at. And as “amusing” as the Thenardiers may be, they are people who have chosen corruption - did you know that Thenardier ends up in America as a slave trader? Spoilers, I know, but it is so fitting for his character. The lovers - of course we need a love story! And the poor and starving - to remind us that they are still there and will always be there and that perhaps we need to open our eyes, hearts, and purses to help those who are not in a position to help themselves. Stories that hopefully make us more aware of the human condition and motivate us to be better than we were when we sat down in our theatre seats.
So I invite you to open your hearts and minds to new moments of inspiration tonight. If this is your first time seeing Les Mis, or your 51st time, I hope we can experience together a movement of the spirit of the show that can draw us closer to our fellowmen and perhaps through that love, closer to heaven.

For those of you who might not know, tonight’s show is presented by SCERA’s high-school company, Acting Up. These kids not only audition to get into the group, sacrifice sleeping in on Saturday mornings for 7:30 am rehearsals, and rehearse many nights for various projects (such as this show), but they love it! Acting Up presents free musical firesides and musical outreach shows to audiences from Utah Valley to Salt Lake City on a monthly basis.
We also compete! Just last month, Acting Up traveled to California to participate in the Musical Theatre Competitions of America, where members of our team attended professional workshops, and performed two 12-minute medleys. Our competition selections were from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, which won 1st place in the advanced high school division and an original medley by the directors entitled On My Way which won 2nd place. They received rave reviews and scored evaluations and feedback from accredited professionals from LA to NYC. Over the past decade, Acting Up has placed in the top tier against other high school teams from across the nation, taking Sweepstakes several times.
I am always amazed at the insight, heart, and professionalism that these young performers bring to our Acting Up productions. A special thank you to all of our high school seniors - this will be their last year with us and we will miss them! And to our amazing parents...we love you. So much credit goes to their generosity and patience as they have served the group by driving, feeding, helping plan parties, chaperoning, and generally cheering us on.
THANK YOU!
If you know (or are!) a talented high school aged student, we will be holding auditions for our 2025-2026 team on Saturday, May 10, 2025 from 9am-4pm. Visit scera.org/actingup or email actingupsm@scera.org for more information. There will be a pre-audition information meeting for parents and teens on Saturday, May 3 @ 11:00am to see if Acting Up is the right fit for you. We’d love to see you there!
