DIRECTOR'S NOTE
By Brodee Ripple
When presented with the opportunity to direct Frozen, I was ecstatic and terrified. How does anyone tackle such a massive show? How do we create Disney magic for all ages? Everyone knows the story of Frozen, so what could we do to add to this beloved story while still respecting the original? I wanted to look at the story we all love and see if anything stood out to me on a deeper level beyond the incredible music and magic ice powers. As I pondered these characters, things I couldn't believe I had overlooked before—while watching a cute movie about sisters—began to stand out.
During callbacks while discussing the characters, the show's theme became glaringly obvious: love. Every character’s decision comes from a place of love, even when that love leads them to make mistakes. Elsa isolates herself because she loves Anna and fears hurting her, while Anna rushes into dangerous situations because of her deep desire to reconnect with her sister. Kristoff loves Anna to the point of being willing to sacrifice his own happiness for her needs. Olaf is created out of the love these sisters share. Hans loves Hans. Every character moves through the world trying to do what they believe is best for those they love, often not listening to those they are looking after, but rather the voices in their own heads. Once the characters begin to not only love each other but also communicate and listen to each other, they start working together to create the love they always intended. It feels all too familiar to real life... besides the talking snowman.
A huge portion of loving is support. This cast has been one of the most supportive casts I have worked with. A handful of cast members had to step away from the production for various reasons. Not only were the cast members who had to step away from their hard work met with love, understanding, and compassion, but those who stepped in to learn a complicated show in such a short time were met with cheers, extra rehearsal time, and teamwork. To the cast that remained positive and loving at every turn, I cannot thank you enough for being exactly who you are and bringing everything you did to create this beautiful world of Arendelle. To Sammy, Mae, Katelyn, and Kenya: thank you for ALL of your hard work, grace and laughter. I love you all endlessly and consider myself lucky to get to work with you in whatever time we had. So many people work on a show that an audience will never see. Hours of work, communication, and collaboration go into every small detail. We are very lucky to have Crysta, Kyle, Garrett, Ethan, Liz, Debbie, Kelsey, Chase, Opal, Erin, Adam and the countless people who work on their teams be part of the family that brought all of this magic to life. I would be remiss not to say a huge thank you to some of my closest people: Kathryn, Lisa, Gwen, and Tanner who listened to my crazy ideas and celebrated all my small victories with me. Theatre truly is a team sport and everyone rallied together to collaborate in a way a director can only dream about. Thank you all for supporting each other and me as I asked for the moon, and you delivered even more.
I hope this show entertains and enlightens, and that we all see this through a different lens than we have in the past. This show taught me it is never too late to start something new ("For the First Time in Forever"), sometimes we just need to take a breath and accept things ("Let it Go"), that we should always fight for the relationships that are important to us ("I Can't Lose You"), and that when we all work together and support each other for who we are and where we are on our journey we can make magic together ("Finale"). Thank you for coming to this show and we all hope you leave with a song in your heart and a little bit more love to share with everyone around you.
