Big Fish has long been a favorite of mine and has burrowed its way deep into my heart. The complicated relationship I have with my own father has only made this beautiful storyline of familial relationships even more poignant.
The story itself is set in modern day, but the actual timeline of Edward’s life stories is kept somewhat ambiguous on purpose. It is meant to help the audience fill in the rest with their own experiences, making every aspect of the show even more relatable. I hope the beauty of the storytelling with the most real, honest, and emotional portrayals of each character will help each patron both consider their relationships in their own lives as well as transport them to a world of magic, wonder, and ultimately, understanding, through Edward’s storytelling.
May we all keep our loved ones alive through the retelling of their stories. May we all learn to have a little more common sense like Will without losing the wonder of imagination and storytelling like Edward. May we learn to see the beauty in both.
I hope you will walk away from this having been transported to our world for a few hours, filled with introspect and a deeper love and understanding for the relationships in your lives. Be the hero of your story!
