Director’s Note
by Chase Ramsey
I have spent a lot of years looking for the place I belong. I spent years and hours searching, getting myself into different rooms, knowing I just had to keep on looking until I found that place. I filled my resume thinking that perhaps I would find a home in success or possibly in a certain city and certain town somewhere.
Ariel is searching too. She knows that if she can just get up there where the people are that she will find her happiness. Well, without ruining the story for you... she does find it. But it isn't because of the place. It's because of the people. She says "Betcha on land, they understand. Bet they don't reprimand their daughters." But she quickly finds out that land and sea are the same. Another lyric from a band called The Avett Brothers says: "So when you run, make sure you run to something and not away from. Because lies don't need an aeroplane to chase you anywhere." The set design is meant to be a physical representation of this idea. Not much difference from one kingdom to the next. Peace doesn't come from the outside, it comes from within.
I recently had an epiphany that we choose our people and sometimes they choose us. I've spent many hours on people that I chose and who didn't choose me back, and this began to clarify past heartache. Ariel chooses Eric and for a time he doesn't choose her because he's distracted by someone else. But when they choose each other they find their home. Each other.
Although I am listed as Director, Janessa Ramsey has shouldered a lot of the leg work as she always does when we collaborate. If you find joy in tonight's show I can promise you that her handprint is all over it. Danielle, who is the production's stage manager, is the other side of my brain. I look to her with everything. I hope everyone can find someone to compliment them like Danielle does me. Rex, who music directed the show, is mostly just a beautiful face, but we all need one of those collaborators we can just look at. But in all seriousness, just listen, it's beautiful. Chase, you are my king and Zippy, my queen. I love you two very much. Kelsey and Debbie know how to take $70 and make it look like $10,000. I love you. Christy takes a pool noodle and makes magic. Brilliant. Adam, Lesa, April, Becca, and Brodee make it all possible for us to even step on this stage. Dad, Shannon, Jeff, Kelsons, COPA humans, this cast. I choose them. These are some of my best friends in the whole world and Cannes, France, New York, or LA couldn't make my life better than these people do every day.
I hope you have so much fun tonight! How lucky to be hanging out on this hill with family and friends that choose us. But most importantly... how lucky are we that SCERA sells DOLE WHIP!
