Innovation has been part of the Scenic story from the very beginning, when Warrnambool Scenic Tours first took guests along Australia’s Great Ocean Road in 1986. From those early days, the focus was on doing things differently – listening carefully to guests, refining every detail and building a reputation for exceptional, friendly service that made each journey feel personal and special.

That same curiosity and care would soon guide us well beyond Australia’s shores as more travellers discovered how effortless and enriching a well-crafted tour could be.

The acquisition of Evergreen Tours in 1988 marked the next step, bringing a like-minded brand into the group while preserving its strong focus on value and quality. In 1993, we again looked at travel through the guest’s eyes, becoming the first touring company to introduce double doors across its coach fleet, making every embarkation smoother, faster and more comfortable, especially after a day of sightseeing.

By the end of the 1990s, innovation was propelling us onto the world stage. Evolving from an Australian touring operator into an international luxury travel expert, hosting guests in Canada and Alaska, across Europe, and throughout Asia, Africa and South Central America. This global expansion laid the foundations for Scenic’s next bold idea: bringing the same ‘guest first’ thinking to the rivers of Europe.

In 2006, we took our first steps onto Europe’s rivers, to show guests a new way to experience these iconic waterways. Just two years later, the first custom-designed Scenic SpaceShip launched, offering an experience unlike anything else - from in-suite Sun Lounges and all-weather private balconies, to fine dining, immersive excursions, and thoughtful touches that make every journey unforgettable.

Emerald Sakara and Scenic Eclipse

Innovation continued through Scenic’s sister brand, with the evolution of Evergreen Tours to Emerald Cruises. In 2014, the first Emerald Star-Ships set sail, quickly earning recognition as “Best New River Ships” for their contemporary design and clever use of space.

Between 2015 and 2017, a wave of new ships -

Emerald Sun, Emerald Dawn, Emerald Destiny, Emerald Liberté, and Emerald Radiance - gave guests even more choice, destinations, and experiences, each packed with exceptional inclusions designed to delight at every turn.

By 2017, Scenic was taking the on board experience even further. Scenic Culinaire cooking demonstrations enabled guests to learn regional recipes in an intimate setting, whilst sailing along some of France’s most celebrated culinary regions.

The first Salt Therapy Lounges on the Scenic Space-Ships added moments of restorative indulgence, weaving wellbeing into Europe river cruising in a way that is uniquely Scenic.

Two years later, the innovation transitioned from rivers to the open oceans, with the debut of Scenic Eclipse in 2019.

The first Discovery Yacht set the new benchmark for ultra-luxury cruising, combining technology, all-inclusive exploration, and four dimensional discovery with two helicopters and a submersible. Paired with luxurious suites, culinary excellence and the now renowned Scenic Lounge Bar featuring a selection of over 130 whiskies.

The spirit of discovery continued on the seas in 2022 and 2023 as Emerald Cruises moved into luxury yacht cruising with Emerald Azzurra and Emerald Sakara, boutique vessels designed to feel like private yachts.

Looking ahead, innovation remains at the heart of every new launch. Between 2026 and 2027, new Emerald Star-Ships – Emerald Astra, Emerald Lumi and Emerald Yachts Emerald Kaia, Emerald Raiya and Emerald Xara will welcome guests (2026 to 2028), while Scenic Spirit II will arrive on the Mekong in 2028.

Scenic Ikon will set sail in 2028, representing the next chapter in our commitment to reimagining what is possible at sea and on the world’s great waterways, always with guests at the centre of every decision.
