Make Room For Life

Del Makes Room for Her Son When Del gave birth to a baby boy, she made a vow that she would lose weight and live for her son. And when he was 5 years old, she underwent surgery with the Sarasota Memorial Bariatric and Metabolic Health Center. Two years later, she has a confidence she never knew before and more than enough energy to keep up with the rambunctious 7 year old that inspired her to reclaim her life — and to be an inspiration herself.

— M.C. RICHARDS

SEPTEMBER KICKS OFF A NEW SEASON, RINGING IN MORE IN-PERSON EVENTS AND MORE LOCAL OFFERINGS. We’re all eager to connect with the community and enjoy Sarasota’s rich art and cultural scene that has always enthralled audiences and participants. When you love performing arts, what could be more tantalizing than to go backstage and learn how the magic gets made? This month, our Arts and Culture issue goes behind the scenes at our area’s outstanding arts venues, learning from their leaders about how these organizations and troupes are tackling and approaching the new season. “Staging a Comeback” is the common theme they shared. This issue invites us behind the scenes at the Hermitage Artist Retreat, introduces outstanding movies about filmmaking and cultural icons, and taps local personalities for tips on stimulating your own creativity. “Art Walk,” a special marketing section this month that gives a platform to local galleries and art centers. You’ll meet artists and gallery owners who tell their story in a way only they can tell it. A special treat is the spotlight on Nancy Guth, who is Sarasota Scene’s staff photographer and so much more. We are lucky to have her on the team. She is a fabulous artist and stands as a bright light in this community. I was fortunate to escape the summer heat and humidity, and a few rainstorms, on a family getaway for a couple of weeks. It was great fun to spend time with my grandson, Swift. He and his family live up in the Pacific Northwest, where the ocean water is cold—but take it from me, the splash pad water is colder! Especially when you are helping a ten-month-old walk and he steers you under the unseen, filling, sky high bucket. When that water comes crashing down on your back it brings a whole new meaning to the expression, “Sending shivers up your spine.” We enjoyed the beach, ocean, hiking trails, outdoor barbeques, and events in the park. I even got to help my daughter and sonin-law with a couple of outdoor handyman projects. One evening we were swimming in the ocean when my daughter pointed to the haze blanketing the intercoastal mountains in the distance. It was smoke coming our way. I was surprised at how thick and

12

SARASOTA SCENE | SEPTEMBER 2021

from the publisher visible it was, considering the forest fires were hundreds of miles away. For a day we were forced to stay indoors with the windows closed and air filters on high due to an air quality warning. Smoke cleared, but air quality on the Pacific Coast and in the Midwest from these devastating forest fires is a problem not to be minimized. We are so fortunate to live on the Suncoast. We do have issues that need to be addressed, but compared to most other areas in the country, our resources and amenities rival any region. I encourage everyone to do your best to participate in the community. Among the great organizations for patronage are the Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, just to name a few. Make the most of our outdoor features—cycle the Legacy Trail (which continues to expand as new segments start to open), walk the John Ringling Bridge, or get out there on a Saturday to enjoy the downtown farmer’s market.

Perfect for those times when you don’t want or have time to cook but still crave something delicious. Morton’s kitchen offers an amazing array of gourmet entrees and comfort foods, all prepared from scratch and packaged to go. Save time, money and effort while savoring the city’s best take-out, hands down. Don’t miss our huge selection of freshly made salads too!

Although this period has been tough on us in the community, our arts organizations have demonstrated true grit in getting through these challenging times. It has been a long 18 months since we have been able to enjoy full and unabridged indoor performances or visit the museum in a way that lets us take in the intended experience. Now organizations are gearing up for the 2021- 2022 season with amazing shows, exhibitions, and events. I, too, am gearing up for the first events of the season and would love to see many of you there. The upcoming SPARCC Gala in October, moved from the previous Spring, is truly a worthy fundraiser given the challenging times that saw many domestic situations escalate and need significant community support. In November, I will be attending Sarasota Memorial Hospital Foundation’s “Rock the Roof” in support of Women and Children’s Services. You must be there to watch (and listen to) these doctors ROCK. Remember to investigate performances, events, fundraisers, galas, and events you would like to enjoy and by doing so you contribute to the community. Buy your tickets and together we’ll “Make the Scene” in Sarasota! Sincerely, John

THE FUTURE, STARRING

THE PLAYERS EYES EXPANDING SOUTHWEST FLORIDA’S ‘CULTURAL COAST’ Community theatre is designed to inspire creativity and engage an entire population. It encourages participation in the performing arts that sets the stage for the future. It’s a grassroots initiative The Players Centre for Performing Arts has championed across the Suncoast since its inception nearly a century ago – and that mission continues to live on. Community theatre, locally built with volunteers from actors to ticket takers, has created what’s now a hallmark attraction for thousands of patrons near and far flocking yearly to the Sarasota-Manatee area for high-quality entertainment.

You than $340 million nonprofit arts and culture industry on the Suncoast that impacts local families, businesses and education. That partnership further promotes thought-provoking creativity regionwide through donations to the Center Stage Capital Campaign. The Players Centre recently announced its 92nd season of shows with six indoor performances, beginning in October with [title of show]. That series is only possible through the active involvement of local volunteers – ushers, actors, stage crew and donors – who shape the area’s arts and culture productions. Staging the region’s future starts in the community and The Players Centre is excited to lead the way.

That remains the signature purpose of The Players Centre as the organization looks to spotlight Lakewood Ranch, which was recently named the nation’s best-selling community in a midyear survey by real estate consulting firm RCLCO. The community theatre will build a two-stage, multi-use facility in the Waterside Place development, providing easy access to impactful shows, as well as an extension of The Players Studio’s longstanding programs offered for all ages. The Players Centre, temporarily located in its new 152-seat performance space known as “Studio 1130” in The Crossings at Siesta Key, aims to achieve this goal through its ongoing Center Stage Capital Campaign – the fundraising driver to raise $26.5 million and stage shows by 2025 in Lakewood Ranch. But it’s not an initiative strictly beneficial to The Players Centre. The community is a stakeholder in molding what’s now a more

Jan 12 -Mar 26

Asolo Rep kicks off in November with a musical that will set the tone for the whole season with its message of exuberant hope and love for all humanity. With its unforgettable and Grammy® award-winning score including “Good Morning Starshine” and “Aquarius,” HAIR features book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt MacDermot. The winter repertory season includes three incredible works that speak to family, community, and love. The rep opens with Thornton Wilder’s 1938 Pulitzer Prizewinning drama, the timeless masterpiece OUR TOWN. The rep season continues with a new comedy, straight from a smash-hit run on Broadway, GRAND HORIZONS, written by one of the most exciting voices currently writing for the stage, Bess Wohl. Wrapping the rep season is the smart and feisty production of THE GREAT LEAP, written by Lauren Yee.

In April, Asolo Rep proudly presents the world premiere of KNOXVILLE, made possible by a generous grant from The Roy Cockrum Foundation. This moving and innovative musical reunites the dynamic Tony Award®winning creative team behind Ragtime, one of the most beloved musicals of all time. In May, Asolo Rep will present a new American play in the Cook Theatre, EUREKA DAY. This explosive comedy skewers sanctimony and the nature of our politics and is written by New College alum, Jonathan Spector. The season concludes with another high-energy new musical, HOOD. Rediscover Robin Hood, the renegade crusader, his Merry Band and a Maid Marian who definitely does not need saving in this madcap musical.

A Young Role Model

under the big top J. BARTON LOWTHER & THE CIRCUS ARTS CONSERVATORY By Laura Shoemaker | Photo by Nancy Guth

J. Barton Lowther spent his teenage years growing up in Sarasota and singing in the choir at Riverview High School. After attending his grandfather’s alma mater, Tulane University, and earning a degree in finance in 2010, he returned to Sarasota to start his “dream job,” working with his father as a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch. Now in his early 30s, Lowther is leading a successful career in wealth management and already building a strong record of giving back. He says his parents instilled in him the value of philanthropy, and it was his partner at Merrill Lynch, Brian Mariash, who encouraged him to get involved with a uniquely Sarasota arts organization: the Circus Arts Conservatory. The nonprofit’s focus is circus arts training and performance with dedicated programs for community education and outreach. It is also home to the longest-running youth circus in the United States, the Sailor Circus Academy. Talking to Lowther about the Circus Arts Conservatory, or CAC for short, he’s quick to emphasize how the conservatory is home to the artistic legacy of the circus, as found in such acts as aerial arts like trapeze, silks, and straps; acrobatics; clowning; and magic. Using these performing arts, CAC packages arts-integrated education opportunities for children and entertaining therapeutic programs for the elderly and those in care facilities, in addition to training youth performers and hosting national and international circus performances. He began his tenure with CAC by serving on a couple of committees before joining the board four years ago. His enthusiasm and leadership propelled him into the position

of board chair in 2018. It excites Lowther to be a part of CAC “because the organization is firing on all cylinders, Circus Arts does it all.” What he means is how wide a net CAC casts, helping young kids, youth, and adults, how the circus arts organization “really is for ‘children of all ages’.” Lowther comes across as a warm, capable person, and it’s easy to imagine how he contributes in many ways to the organization—his financial savvy, his understanding of the importance of having a digital presence, and his ease when talking about CAC, its mission, and programs. He’s friendly, ready to engage, and enthusiastic. He’s also pragmatic, ready to roll up his sleeves and “do whatever is needed” to ensure the organization’s success and stability. He’s gracious with his time, extending his term on the board when COVID had slowed programming and operations. That, and his sales chops come in handy, he adds, when it’s time to encourage gala guests and donors to “raise the paddle.”

PERFORMANCE-DRIVEN Though he’s never walked a tightrope, Lowther’s no stranger to performing himself. In addition to singing in the choir as a teenager, he sang in an acapella group called Green Envy during college, and he has been a member of symphonic chorale group Key Chorale. He says these experiences help him appreciate what it takes to be a performer of the circus arts. The youth performers of Sailor Circus Academy receive not only education and training in circus arts, but support, SEPTEMBER 2021 | SARASOTA SCENE

philanthropy guidance, and a welcoming environment, describes Lowther. So welcoming, in fact, that they can often be found at the arena, even when they aren’t practicing, he explains, doing homework and just hanging out with one another. “They want to be there. It’s a family.” Watching as “Queen of the Air” Dolly Jacobs, Founder and Vice President of CAC and a world-renowned circus aerialist, teach a group of Sailor Circus performers one of her acts, Lowther is cognizant that he’s witnessing the circus’s legacy being passed on, right before his eyes. Lowther feels strongly that the legacy and tradition of the circus arts are worth carrying forward, that they are a “wonderful implement to teach kids life lessons.” Lowther explains what some of those lessons are. Being a circus performer demands a high degree of teamwork, skill, and perhaps most importantly, trust. Those Sailor Circus alums who aspire to work as professional circus artists might audition for the Cirque du Soleil, but the skills learned can be applied to many different jobs outside of the Big Top. “These kids are professionals,” he explains. To further this point, Lowther recalls a statement that former board chair Jack Brown was fond of repeating. It was made by an alumni who grew up to become a high stakes criminal attorney: “I learned how to perform in Sailor Circus, and I’m still performing today.” Tucked beside Sarasota High School on Bahia Vista Street, it’s hard to miss the red and yellow entrance and blue and white domed arena of CAC and the Sailor Circus Academy. Major renovations were completed in 2019, featuring a host of improvements, like state of-the-art retractable stadium seating and full ADA-compliant bathrooms, though Lowther jokes the one addition most everyone is talking about is the air-conditioning. “It took many years and many campaigns to finally renovate the CAC Arena,” he says, and he lists his part in seeing the renovations through as one of his proudest accomplishments. Lowther is proud of the way CAC serves area school children in arts-integrated education, creatively using the circus arts to teach physics and math. Some of the proven benefits, he explains, are better scores on standardized tests and increased engagement and interest in STEM. He’s excited about the circus arts magnet programs that CAC began in partnerships with Sarasota High and Booker Middle

52

SARASOTA SCENE | SEPTEMBER 2021

Schools . And he’s happy about the joy that is brought to people in assisted living through the organization’s Humor Therapy Program. In light of these community programs, Lowther is considered when asked about what people might be surprised to know about CAC. “We need support. It may be easy to think the organization can thrive without you, but we need your help.”

ROLE MODEL Reflecting on his job as a financial advisor, Lowther says he enjoys learning and helping people. “There is always something new to learn and things are always changing, it really keeps you on your toes. The best part is being able to watch your clients achieve their financial goals, whether that is buying their dream second home or funding college education for their grandchildren.” There’s a distinct parallel between the role Lowther plays in his work helping people with their finances and his charitable endeavors. “I love being able to make a difference, and being a part of changing the world for the better. It makes me feel good to donate and volunteer—I think a lot of people would agree that there is something within our brains (or hearts) that rewards us for helping others.” A big part of what makes him feel fortunate is tied to living in Sarasota. “A lot of my friends in high school went to ‘bigger and better’ cities to live and work, I just knew I wanted to be here. I can go to NYC or Denver for the weekend any time, but Sarasota is where I want to live. If you think about it, there is no other city with a small-town, laid-back attitude with big-city, high-level arts and culture.” Lowther’s committed to supporting the arts and culture in the hometown that he loves, and looking ahead, he envisions the American circus performing arts legacy continuing to grow, with CAC and Sarasota at the epicenter.

committing to

creativity Local Experts Share Their Best Tips By Ryan G. Van Cleave When you hear the term “motivational speaker,” you might not envision a grown woman on stage wearing a helmet with swiveling antenna, but that’s exactly what Sarasota resident Linda Larsen has done. Many times. Thanks to her MFA in Acting from Florida State and former careers as an actress and social worker, Linda realized that delivering the same messages in the same ways wasn’t going to motivate anyone. Her solution was to get creative and do something different.

Linda Larsen

“Four-year-old kids ask about 400 questions a day,” she explains, “but adults don’t. We beat it out of them. They stop asking questions, and they stop taking risks.” That’s the exact opposite of the formula for being creative. As for what creativity exactly is, well, that’s a bit trickier, she admits. “Trying to describe creativity is a lot like trying to nail Jell-O to the wall.”

1

Raise your hand, even if you don’t know the answer.

2

Ask “stupid questions.” Lots of them.

3

Challenge assumptions.

But Linda has plenty of ways to encourage creativity in both kids and adults. She recommends: • • • • • • • •

Raise your hand, even if you don’t know the answer. Ask “stupid questions.” Lots of them. Challenge assumptions. Avoid creativity-killing phrases such as “That won’t work!” or “That’s been done before!” Don’t worry about looking foolish or being right. Play more. Value creativity in others. Value creativity in yourself.

“A popular misconception about creativity is that you’re either born with it or not,” Linda says. “We certainly have inclinations, like being more emotional or big-picture focused, but it can so easily be learned.” A lot has to do with the mindset people have. If they think something is going to be evaluated, they freeze up. If they think it’s play time, they open up. Creativity is always being in play-time mode. It’s about being as open to strange ideas as logical, fact-based ones. Jennifer Msumba, a Florida-based autistic filmmaker and musician, has learned to trust creativity to help her persevere through challenges and setbacks. Creativity played a big part in the music videos she began posting on YouTube in 2013. And creativity was key in the numerous short films she wrote and directed that promote tolerance and understanding, and in the writing of Shouting at Leaves, her forthcoming memoir that details the struggles and triumphs of her life from childhood to adulthood.

Jennifer Msumba “When I want to get into my creative zone, I usually start with music,” Jennifer says, “because most of my screenplays, films, and stories are based on songs I have written. Something about strumming my guitar brings out thoughts and contemplations in me. I write the music before I write the lyrics, so I know it is the music that helps me become creative.” For Jennifer, creativity allows someone’s feelings to become tangible, regardless of the medium. “I think we are all wired to be creative in some way. Even finding solutions to everyday problems is a way of being creative. For example, if you figure out how to stop your toilet from leaking until you can call the plumber? That is being creative.” Jennifer believes that one trait creative people share is a willingness to show their inner self, regardless of what other people may think. “I believe all people have potential for creativity expressed in different ways, but the people who seem more creative are the ones who don’t mind sharing what is inside them. Sometimes I feel like doing something creative can be like a secret code to your feelings. You don’t have to come right out and say your feelings—you can express them more abstractly and that feels safer.” 58

Both Linda and Jennifer use their creativity to inspire and support others. Linda changes lives when she stands on a stage, and Jennifer changes lives through the screen and page. If they both did what everyone else did, neither would enjoy the success they’re finding today. Linda likely wouldn’t be an international humor-based motivational speaker and one of only 232 people worldwide to be inducted into the Speaker Hall of Fame. Jennifer wouldn’t have just won the award for Best Short Documentary at the 16th annual Sunscreen Film Festival for her film The Fish Don’t Care When It Rains. “Every business that’s successful today is successful because of creativity—innovation in business is critical. Adaptation is a must,” Linda says. “If nothing else, that’s the lesson of this past year and a half of COVID-19. We must adapt in new, creative, different ways if we are going to survive. We can’t just do whatever everybody else has done before. That’s over. That’s history.” Even if it means wearing a swivel antenna helmet to teach people about the myth of multitasking. “I was born a textile artist,” says fabric collage artist and designer Robin Rowley Bowman. “Even as a child, I stitched clothes for my dolls and made fabric accessories for my doll house!” Many years of hand and machine sewing came together when she discovered fabric collage, earning her awards at local and national juried art shows. Today she hand-dyes cloth and stitches it together with various other fabrics, fibers, and embellishments into works of art. “I use bits of cloth like dabs of paint, layering one on top of another until the piece tells me we are finished,” she says. Robin’s works often feature sportfish, turtles, and other sea creatures. “I love the water and find inspiration at beaches, aquariums and in our beautiful Florida environment.” What makes the process unique? Her creative process begins with gathering hand-dyed fabrics, beads, threads, and metal buttons. The subject (for example, a fish) is created by sewing patterned and textured fabrics together, collage style, as an art quilt. Then it is sewn on background fabric and embellished. Robin recently studied silversmithing and now creates metal beads and buttons incorporated 62

into her works. Frequently she repurposes materials, like netting from veggie bags or scraps of fabrics that would have otherwise been discarded. Bowman’s signature style features small cloth “mosaic” pieces spaced in such a way that the background fabric is revealed and looks like the grout in tile mosaics. Where can buyers find her? Bowman sells fabric collage originals and fine art prints online at www.artforyournest.com and at Vanessa Fine Jewelry in Lakewood Ranch. Gift items featuring her work can also be purchased at www.artforyournest.com. For further information, reach Robin at robin@artforyournest.com or by phone at (941) 735-8627.

When clients step through the door of Boulevard Fine Art South in Nokomis, they are often surprised at the depth of fine art and framing options available—and also to learn that the gallery has only been open in this location since February of this year. Owner David Manola explains. “After running our gallery in Chicago for 26 years, we’ve been spending more time each year down here. Eventually we hope to spend most of the year here in Florida.” Opening a location in the Sarasota area has been a longtime goal, and they finally found the perfect building. “We carry one of the largest selections of fine art,” says Manola. “We have developed our line-up of artists over the years and keep adding when we find a new artist that captures our attention.” 64

Who are some of the artists represented? Manola says that Ursula Brenner is among their top artists. “We have been selling her work for 26 years, and it keeps getting better,” he says. “She really adapts to the everchanging interior design trends. Color is everything.” Another artist who has been quite popular is Alexis Henry. With a clean color palette and sophisticated abstract textures, his work complements almost every décor. Also noteworthy, says Manola, is work by artist Charles Dwyer. Formerly selling in the $2,000 to $3,000 range, his works are now available for $6,000 up to $22,000 as his artistry continually improves and evolves. Boulevard Fine Art South carries more than 50 artists from all around the world—from emerging artists to awardwinning, established artists. Visit them at 110 Colonia Lane East, Nokomis, FL.

Mary Moscatelli, executive director Venice Art Center VeniceArtCenter.com • (941) 485-7136 390 Nokomis Ave. S., Venice, Fl. 34285 Venice Art Center has been around for more than 65 years, yet it continues to surprise and delight. Back then, a group of 28 artists in Venice decided to put on an art exhibit. They got together and said, “Let’s do it.” They held their first exhibition in a small beach house, met with success, formed the Venice Art League, and blossomed into the Venice Art Center. With 12 exhibits annually, hundreds of classes for adults and children, 50 teachers of all disciplines, 1,400 members, an inspired staff, more than 200 volunteers, an Italian café (The Art Caffe), and a venue for multiple events, fundraisers, and concerts, the Center has become a focal point of the community. “What’s unique about the Center is that no matter who walks in the door, there is something for everyone here,” said Mary Moscatelli, the Center’s Executive Director. “We want to make it inclusive, so that anyone who walks in here can find something that they enjoy.” Moscatelli is also the Chair of an exciting new public arts project, FantaSea Venice. During August, the streets of Venice were adorned with dozens of 5-foot-tall artfully painted sculptures of mermaids and seahorses. Each of the 68

52 pieces has been painted by different artists, sponsored by various businesses and individuals, and will grace the streets through April of 2023. FantaSea Venice is the third public art project and promises the same allure as its predecessors. In 2005 the Center hosted a sculpture project called Pigs of Paradise, and in 2012, they showcased dolphins and mermaids, called Sea Venice. Moscatelli urges everyone to come downtown and experience FantaSea Venice. “The sculptures are beautiful. Make it a day trip! Comeback Arts Leaders Navigate & Deliver Through Challenging Times By Sylvia Whitman

On the eve of the 2021-2022 season, Sarasota Scene asked directors at seven of Sarasota’s leading arts and culture organizations to reflect on the impact of the pandemic and anticipate what the future might bring—even as the delta variant of the coronavirus has put an asterisk next to anything labeled ”plan.” What efforts have gone into launching the upcoming season? How has the pandemic shaped programming? What challenges wake you at 4 a.m.? What excites you most about the next 12 months—and perhaps the rest of the decade?

enable quarantined patients to tour the museum “through the eyes of a remote-controlled robot named Artie,” says Executive Director Steven High. “The robot was driven by the patient and could go anywhere in our Museum of Art. A museum educator accompanied the robot and discussed the works of art and responded to questions.”

New virtual programs, created on the fly, drew in and often expanded audiences. “Thousands of audience members from 47 states, and across 30 countries and six continents, all ballet lovers, experienced the remarkable artistry of The Sarasota Ballet,” says Executive Director Joseph Volpe.

Almost every organization mentioned that disruption spurred both innovation and introspection. “We learned from the reckoning the entire country experienced with the murder of George Floyd and dug deep into examining our work at FST,” says Florida Studio Theatre Managing Director Rebecca Hopkins. “The entire staff and board took this time to really focus on our work on equity, diversity, inclusion, and access.” Those four words came up again and again. “It really truly has been the worst of times and the best of times,” says Mary Bensel, executive director of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. “The community of the performing arts, which always was a group who thought out of the box, now had to think to outer space to get through.” On the plus side, local arts and culture leaders consulted with each other on everything from closing/reopening considerations to the merits of specific cleaning products. Sometimes they just cried on each other’s shoulders. “The bonds I have made this year with my other performing arts cohorts have strengthened a thousandfold,” says Bensel.

Last spring, individual Sarasota Orchestra members created musical vignettes for posting on YouTube—and the Library of Congress asked to archive these to document the pandemic. The Ringling partnered with Sarasota Memorial Hospital to

In addition to collaboration, these trying times have prompted tremendous public and private generosity. “We saw the community rise up and say, ‘The arts are core to Sarasota,’” says Hopkins of FST. “It was everywhere.”

For that last question, Joseph McKenna, president and CEO of Sarasota Orchestra, has a short answer: “Change and change.” Themes emerged. “The word of the year was pivot,” according to Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards and Managing Director Linda DiGabriele at Asolo Repertory Theatre. Or, as Richard Russell, general director of Sarasota Opera, puts it, “In effect, this entire year has been about learning, adjusting, troubleshooting, and being creative.”

"We hope to inspire a community to grow even stronger than we were before the pandemic.” —Michael Donald Edwards

ASOLO REPERTORY THEATRE “It truly takes a village to produce live theatre, and that’s on a good day,” says Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards. “This past year was an occasion for us to think differently. It was a new opportunity to revitalize the organization at all levels while also taking action on equity, diversity, and inclusion.” Amid the pandemic, Asolo Rep found “a way to produce live performances outside by building an entire outdoor theatre from the ground up,” notes Managing Director Linda DiGabriele. It was one of the few professional theaters in the United States to pull that off, thanks to careful attention to health and safety protocols. “Producing the outdoor season on the Terrace Stage with a significantly reduced staff required everyone to function at the top of their game and beyond. It was hugely rewarding—and very moving—to be performing live, even in less than ideal circumstances, and vital to stay connected to our community, which has been so supportive.”

72

SARASOTA SCENE | SEPTEMBER 2021

Having finished its outdoor Terrace Stage season in April, Asolo Rep used the summer to reevaluate every facet of its operations—“to review our priorities and examine new ways of thinking and producing,” says DiGabriele. The pandemic has shaped the upcoming season on both logistical and artistic levels. Besides staging shows originally slated for last year, such as The Great Leap and Knoxville, Asolo is leading off the new season with Hair. Its signature “Let the Sunshine In” suggests both the joy of returning to live theater and the accountability the times call for. “Hair is an exuberant celebration of community and the differences that are reflected in the tapestry of America. It’s a reminder of all the good sides of humanity,” says Edwards. “The pandemic revealed cracks across our society. Experiencing performances like Hair and the other work in our season is sure to leave audiences a little more comforted and a little more positive. We hope to inspire a community to grow even stronger than we were before the pandemic.”

FLORIDA STUDIO THEATRE The spring 2020 lockdown hit FST hard. “Overnight, we went from 150 people working on our campus to 30,” says Managing Director Rebecca Hopkins. “Our stages went dark for 15 months.” Those 30 staffers, however, undertook major infrastructure projects—refurbishing five theaters, renovating the Goldstein Cabaret kitchen and support facilities, and installing new accounting and inventory systems. “It wasn’t glamorous work, but it was work that would make us strong when we came back,” says Hopkins—and it included the “Snowbird Project,” reseating the entire subscriber base (about 28,000 tickets) so that patrons can keep the same seats when they’re in town.

Now that the lights have come back on, “the biggest challenge so far has been bringing new staff on board,” says Hopkins. They need support and training in usual routines and new COVID protocols. The biggest thrill is the return of the audience, “the final character in any play,” says Hopkins. “Without them, it’s not complete.” She accepts that things won’t be the same—shouldn’t be the same—and that another shoe might drop. “We have all experienced something great and grave together. We— all of us in this town, all of us in this state, all of us on the planet—have experienced something together. We have a common experience, and that is a rare thing. Seldom in the history of humanity have we had a ‘shared experience’ of this magnitude on a worldwide scale. We have a deeper understanding that we are all in this together. And that your destiny impacts me. Your life impacts my life, no matter how different we may be. We are all connected. So, what will we make of it?”

THE RINGLING “Everything changed due to COVID and our 2 ½ month closing [in spring 2020],” says Executive Director Steven High. “Planning, budgets, financing, and earned income all took a significant hit.” The Ringling reopened in May 2020, with most of the staff returning from remote work on August 2. the ringling—circus exhibit The museum extended the run of many exhibitions and delayed the start of others. It was tricky to ship artwork during quarantine. Staffing shortages due to attrition over the past 18 months and a hiring freeze by FSU have created other challenges. “We have made a major push toward recruitment of staff in almost all areas of the museum,” says High, “but in particular we are focusing on expanding our part-time employees in security and visitor services.” Regardless, the performance program continued. The Ringling developed artist residencies in the Historic Asolo Theater, including a major live-streamed performance by John Sims, and presented films. “By this winter and spring, we will be back to scheduled performances including many artists that we had to cancel due to COVID in 2020,” says High. “The performance group Cimafunk will perform as part of our season launch party in October.” THE SARASOTA BALLET “In many ways, in comparison to the constant shifting playing field that was the previous season, the planning effort for the upcoming 21-22 season has been significantly more straightforward,” says Executive Director Joseph Volpe. “That isn’t to say that it’s been business as usual, and of 74

Ricardo Rhodes & Ricardo Graziano - Photography Matthew Holler course with the unpredictable nature of the pandemic, one can’t take the status quo for granted. However, The Sarasota Ballet has learned and grown a great deal over the past 18 months, and I have great confidence in all of us to adapt and thrive no matter what is thrown our way.” So, for the moment, Volpe is looking forward to “the rush of the theater … that feeling of community, the exhilaration of a standing ovation, the simple joy of watching an artist perform on stage, live and in person.” Volpe says that he’s sure he speaks for all local nonprofits when he says “how incredibly grateful we are for this truly remarkable community.” In other places, museums and performing companies struggled and closed. Certainly, artistic and administrative leaders and their boards faced tough decisions, but “in the end, the patrons of Sarasota and Manatee County kept the performing arts thriving, building a support system for an ever-flourishing cultural community.” At the same time, Volpe worries about global donor fatigue over the long haul of COVID’s economic impacts—likely to be felt for years and years. “What concerns me is, when the

attila (2007) ‘all clear’ is given across the country and indeed across the world, whether the performing arts industry will be in a stable enough position to carry these new burdens.” SARASOTA OPERA “We have learned a great deal about our company and our audiences in the last year and a half,” says General Director Richard Russell. “Our programming will return mostly to normal going forward, but the positive response to our ‘COVID’ season, with shorter, less familiar works, will encourage us to include this kind of programming in future seasons.” As “the only opera company in the U.S. to present a season in our theater last February and April,” Sarasota Opera mastered strict health and safety protocols, says Russell, and is planning “fully staged opera in the Opera House.” He’s eager, after a year and a half of limited connection, “to jointly experience the joy of live opera.” But what do patrons want—and how will they vote with their feet? “We are hoping that, in the coming year, a larger percentage of our audience will want to be back, but it’s anyone’s guess how many.”

"I don’t do this job for thanks, but the comments from our audience following performances— several of whom said, ‘Thank you for performing. I feel like I have my life back!’.” — Richard Russell

Russell says he got very emotional at the opera’s first rehearsal and after the first post-pandemic performance. “I don’t do this job for thanks, but the comments from our audience following performances—several of whom said, ‘Thank you for performing. I feel like I have my life back!’—emphasized to me that despite some naysayers and skeptics, we had made the right decision to put on performances. And most importantly that we were able to do it safely!” He adds, “Responding to the pandemic and making the best decisions for everyone has been a moving target. I just hope in the coming year that target slows to a near stop.” SARASOTA ORCHESTRA “Imagining and planning the coming season is as though we were invited to be the first orchestra to perform at the international space station,” says President and CEO Joseph McKenna. “We are experienced and seasoned in what we do, but we have had to learn how to present in a completely new set of conditions.” 76

SARASOTA SCENE | SEPTEMBER 2021

Assembling the 21-22 season, “we worked hard to honor repertoire, conductors, and soloists who were postponed due to the pandemic,” says McKenna. “The hiatus also created a thirst for some of the iconic, full-orchestra works in the repertoire,” so the orchestra has programmed a mix of “treasures” and “other works that create the energy of a spring garden after a long winter.” The Chamber Soirée series unites spoken word with music to signal the power of that combination “after this prolonged period of longing for our spirits to be lifted.” Striving to be resilient and relevant is nothing new for Sarasota Orchestra, adds McKenna. The absence of live music this past year has underscored its importance. “By its essence, music promotes enhanced listening, shared experiences with others, and a commitment to education and community. These life qualities have all been challenged during the pandemic. Renewing these experiences, combined with our desire to author thoughtful change, will make the next decade a rewarding journey for our organization and community.”

the van wezel performing arts hall VAN WEZEL PERFORMING ARTS HALL During the dark-stage days of the pandemic, Executive Director Mary Bensel stood under the ghost light in the hall to “keep the ghosts of seasons past company. More than not, I would find myself in tears, but by the time I left I felt reassured that new memories would be made on that stage again.” She recalls one “very poignant” week of pandemic workarounds. “We had been doing a large number of online shows with our artists, and we decided to do local interviews to put in our newsletter.” All the performers were “absolutely devastated they were not to be on the road or able to help.” Theater people, she says, “rush in to help whatever the crisis is. They try to cheer everyone up or raise money or get people to help out. But with Covid, we were all sidelined.” Video performances just “didn’t have that one-on-one experience of the artist and the audience. That ripped hearts out of all of us.” The Van Wezel team stepped up its educational outreach online—and whatever else it could. “Parking-lot graduations, a black-tie dinner, a vaccination clinic, bayfront yoga, food distribution—you name it, we loved it.” Now the Van Wezel is emerging into a brave new world. “Putting together every season is like working a jigsaw puzzle with multiple moving dates. Often, a change that happens to a show in Ohio, for example, can totally impact calendars all across the country,” says Bensel. “But this year, juggling three years into one has been like a jigsaw puzzle in 3-D.” Early on, COVID nixed Hamilton, and “other shows that had been on sale and scheduled will now have to come before new plans.” As much as any plan can be nailed down. Bensel has no shortage of uncertainties. “I worry if the audiences that made us the number one performing arts center in the world in our category will all return. So much of what we do comes down to having every seat filled. I worry that shows that have confirmed may cancel.” Some artists aren’t ready to tour yet; others are choosing venues based on the country’s political divide. Actors’ Equity, the union for live performers, is making demands that are harder to meet for an older building. Still, Bensel says she’s “over-the-moon excited about seeing all of our loyal audiences again—our ushers, sponsors, stagehands, wardrobe personnel, touring personnel, musicians, actors, caterers, and vendors. It will be like Christmas morning

wrapped up in the Fourth of July for the first few months of shows!” THE SHOWS WILL GO ON, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER Richard Hopkins, FST’s producing artistic director, likens this past year and a half to a dip into the Middle Ages, a dark period marked by instability, plagues, and strife. But “we need to remember that the Middle Ages were followed by a new awakening—the Renaissance. We think and hope we will see the beginning of an American renaissance in the arts.” SEPTEMBER 2021 | SARASOTA SCENE

SPOTLIGHT

Creative Invitation Artists Blossom at The Hermitage on Manasota Key By Wendy Lyons Sunshine Earlier this summer, 80 creative artists around the country received a package in the mail. Inside were a handful of sharks’ teeth, a small conch shell, and an invitation.

away from daily responsibilities, recharge creative batteries, and advance their craft in a beautiful coastal setting.

Getting this package was akin to winning the lottery. Just as each shell and fossil had been chosen from a wide universe of seaside treasures, those who received them were chosen from a wide sea of artistic talent, explains Andy Sandberg, artistic director and chief executive officer at the Hermitage Artist Retreat.

UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY “Nothing could have prepared me for the beauty of that first visit to the grounds,” says flutist and composer Claire Chase. “I was completely blown away by the setting, by the ethos of the organization, and by the wonderful warmth of everyone I met. There’s truly no place like it in the world.

The lucky recipients are gifted with a rare opportunity—a fully paid artists’ residency at the Hermitage’s historic Manasota Key campus in Englewood, a time to relax 1 04

artists, seeded collaborations that will fuel me creatively for years, and felt a sense of kinship and community that I haven’t experienced in any other place.”

CLAIRE CHASE WITH BIG BERTHA

Like all artists invited to the Hermitage, Chase has presented her works to the public at free events on campus and in settings across the community. During a recent visit, she presented a one-woman concert at Selby Gardens, part of the new “Hermitage Sunsets @ Selby Gardens” series. Her backdrop was a wide banyan tree and a chorale of seabirds. Chase introduced the audience to a relatively rare instrument: the contrabass flute, which is two octaves below the standard flute and produces deep, resonant tones reminiscent of the didgeridoo, an Australian wind instrument. Her own contrabass, dubbed “Big Bertha,” delivers distinctive percussive sounds in Chase’s compositions. The musician also treated the gathering to virtuosa flute work in her composition called “Pan.” The piece features aural layers recorded earlier by volunteers playing unusual resources, such as a wine glass chorus. The New York Times describes Chase’s work “genredefying.” For her, creating and performing new music is akin to a high-wire act, and “that’s why I love it so much,” she says.

ART IN MANY FORMS The Hermitage’s overarching mission is to support the creative process and early development of artistic works spanning a wide variety of mediums. “Year round, we host artists from across theater, music, visual art, literature, and various other art forms,” says Sandberg. “They receive the gift of residencies, space and time to create bold, new, impactful work in their genres and mediums. Artists from different fields intermingle and coexist here. They come for multiple weeks at a time, flexible around their schedule.” The Sarasota community and surrounding areas benefit from this influx of talent. Free talks, readings, and demonstrations are given, frequently at sunset on Friday evenings, at the Hermitage campus and at other venues elsewhere across the community, including at public schools and performing arts centers. Over the past year, visiting Hermitage artists presented over 50 live events across the region plus dozens of digital events accessible remotely. There is no application form for a Hermitage residency; artists are selected and invited through a deliberate curation process. Members of the Hermitage Curatorial Council propose and discuss candidates who they believe would benefit most—typically established, mid-career artists with a deep commitment to craft, inclusivity, and innovation. Endorsement from all curators within an artistic discipline is required to seal the decision. Invited artists have a history of being recognized in the highest quarters. For example, a full thirteen Hermitage artists have been awarded a Pulitzer Prize. In residence this past year was Michael R. Jackson, winner of the 2020 Pulitzer Prize in drama for his musical, “A Strange Loop.” At the Hermitage, he shared songs from his new musical “White Girl in Danger,” plus stories about his journey and process in creating the piece. From there, he left to workshop the show at New York Stage and Film, a noted theatrical incubator.

REWARDING PARTNERSHIPS With certain Hermitage residencies come a financial reward, thanks to the generosity of Hermitage supporters. One example is the Hermitage Greenfield Prize, which awards a $30,000 commission funded by the Greenfield Foundation for a significant new artistic

work exploring important cultural issues, such as social justice. Now entering its 14th season, the Hermitage Greenfield Prize rotates between works in music, theater, and visual art. This past June, the Hermitage announced its latest initiative. Local philanthropist Flora Major and the Kutya Major Foundation are underwriting a $35,000 annual commission that will go to a playwright or theater artist for an original new work of theater. The new Hermitage Major Theater Award also comes with the opportunity to hold a reading or workshop in a major cultural center such as New York, London, Chicago, or Los Angeles. At any given time, five or six artists are in residence on the Hermitage’s 9-acre campus. Each gets their own housing and workspace with kitchen and laundry facilities, access to a flexible, white-walled studio for staging theatrical or visual works, and a glorious natural setting. When it’s time for a break, residents can wander by sand dunes or Native American shell middens that line the path into mangrove thickets. One leafy walk takes visitors to a wooden dock that juts out over quiet bay waters. Kayakers and paddleboarders may be rewarded with dolphin and manatee sightings. “Parts of the campus are a wetland preserve,” explains Sandberg. “When it rains and floods, we have all kinds of migratory birds, too.” Campus renovations and ecological landscaping restoration continue to make improvements. “We have plans for a nature bridge that will protect the wetlands and really make sure we’re taking care of the environment,” he says. Christopher Burney, a member of the Hermitage Curatorial Council, former artistic producer at New York’s Second Stage Theater, and currently artistic director of New York Stage and Film, confirms how rare and special this environment is for artists. “After having spent a week in residence myself, I learned how the Hermitage sparks an authentic creative magic,” he says. “The campus on Manasota Key fosters the space to dream in ways the rest of the world rarely allows. The lush surrounding nature, the opportunity to connect with other artists, and an enthusiastic audience at the weekly presentations is the perfect alchemy in which to create.” SEPTEMBER 2021 | SARASOTA SCENE

Education MATTERS By Ryan G. Van Cleave

ART CENTER SARASOTA: HELPING OUR COMMUNITY GET CREATIVE Established as The Sarasota Art Association in 1926—the first arts organization in Sarasota—what’s now known as Art Center Sarasota is a member-supported organization with a vital mission: to provide Sarasota with opportunities for creative expression and art appreciation through art education, exhibitions, cultural programs, and community engagement. That includes presenting contemporary work in its three curated galleries and offering juried competitions. But it’s so much more than that, notes Elizabeth Goodwill, who has served as their Education Director for nearly a decade. One of the most popular offerings is their youth summer camp, which has been going for more than 15 years now. “This summer,” Goodwill reports, “we were sold out. The kids wanted to be in camp.” This summer’s camps were held in person, which was a welcome change for families who spent so much time online this past year. “We make sure our camps are a fun summer experience.

1 08

SARASOTA SCENE | SEPTEMBER 2021

The campers are free to explore and try new materials. The sky is the limit for their creativity.” During the school year, Art Center Sarasota offers Saturday programming for kids aged 6 to 15 who are interested in everything from fashion design to portfolio development. “We’re working toward building an afterschool program, but it’s still in the development stage,” explains Goodwill. “It’s something that I and our Youth Program Coordinator, Barbara Gerdeman, feel strongly about.” They also offer Slice of Art, a grant-funded program for public school classes to visit the galleries and create work connected to their own STEAM courses. While this was on hold last year due to COVID-19, it’s been a popular program that expands on what is being taught in the classroom. When it comes to adult education, Art Center Sarasota has become known as a nationwide destination for high-quality workshops. People come from all over to learn directly from internationally known artists who are invited to teach in person in Sarasota. These workshops and classes start up again in October and will be held in person. “Currently, we mainly host mixed media and watercolor visiting artists,” Goodwill says. “That’s what our adult students have expressed interest in, so that’s what we bring. Five years from now, we might need to

focus more on artists working in pastel or oil. The trends are always changing.” There’s also a program called ArtVentures that came about when adults realized how much fun the kids were having with their art projects during summer camps. “We’ve been calling this ‘camp for adults,’” jokes Goodwill. “It’s perfect for adults of any skill level. They come in for a three-hour session in the morning, afternoon, or evening, and they’ll know exactly what they’ll be making. Three hours later, the project will be completed.” All the classes, workshops, and visiting artist demonstrations require a fee to participate, but the Appleby’s Foundation has been very generous with its support, providing scholarship opportunities for the educational offerings. For those who worry about their skills or lack thereof? “I only hire nice people,” Goodwill promises with a laugh. “Our teachers are here to help, not intimidate. We have a class and skill level that works for everyone.” To get a sense of what they’ve been up to during the pandemic, join Goodwill every Thursday at 6pm via Zoom for Artist Happy Hour, which is “casual talk about the week, current art events, and the ups and downs in-between.” Or there’s the ongoing monthly Art Salon series that hosts art history talks and discussions, or the How to Be an Artist Book Club, which is also hosted online

by Goodwill. “There are many ways to be part of what we do at Art Center Sarasota,” she says. “We’d love to have you join us.” These online activities are free of charge, but donations of support are always welcome. Going forward, Goodwill plans to continue offering Facebook Live and Zoom events since they’ve been so well received. “We’re not going to stop just because people are vaccinated. Online forums are an added component, a great outreach tool that gives people flexibility. We see it as an opportunity to cater to the needs of people who are outside of our area or who can’t come to our site.” Situated right at the heart of the historic Sarasota Bayfront, Art Center Sarasota has become the center of Sarasota’s impressive visual arts community. Check them out—they have something for everyone. “You don’t have to be an artist to appreciate what we do here,” says Goodwill. “And you’re never too old to learn!”

NANCY GUTH For nearly 7 years, Nancy Guth has photographed community members and local events for Sarasota Scene magazine. And when she’s not behind the lens, her passion is creating unique mixed media art. Nancy fell in love with the perspective of drone photography and wanted to find a way to represent beach scenes in her art. Using acrylic paints, pigment paste, dyes, and miniature figures of less than one inch, she took to using her collection of photos as inspiration for whimsical, dimensional assemblages. She has captured horses and riders walking through the surf, children playing along the shoreline, dogs frolicking in the shallow waters, and people in beach chairs under umbrellas and palm trees. Looking at the beach from a couple hundred feet overhead, one sees the beauty and movement of water and waves. Guth ‘s seaside panoramas are full of detail, with figures that make each piece come to life. Nancy’s work can be found at State of The Arts Gallery on State Street in downtown Sarasota. InHEALTH UNDERSTANDING LONG TERM WEIGHT LOSS By Kevin Huguet, MD, MPH, FACS

Let’s face it—long term weight loss is not easy. However, it is definitely possible—especially when your personal motivation to lose weight and keep it off for life meets with the expertise and support you need. WHAT ARE OPTIONS FOR LONG TERM WEIGHT LOSS? When eating healthy and exercising regularly haven’t been enough to help shed excess weight, you may want to consider a minimally invasive surgical approach. There are no specific criteria for eligibility for weight loss through medication, but there are specific criteria for surgical weight loss. WHEN IS SURGICAL WEIGHT LOSS APPROPRIATE? Weight loss surgery can be an excellent option for individuals who have tried to lose 75 or more pounds and failed at multiple diet attempts in the past. Those whose BMI is between 35-39.9 and have a diagnosis of hypertension, type II diabetes, or obstructive sleep apnea may be a candidate. Individuals with BMI over 40 and have no comorbidities may also be a candidate, based on insurance guidelines. Most weight loss surgeons have a caring team member that can provide a complimentary insurance check for you. The latest surgical weight loss options include a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and a robotic gastric bypass. Both procedures are a tool to lose weight and should be combined with a comprehensive program that provides you with guidance especially before and throughout the first year after surgery. WHAT IS A SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY? A sleeve gastrectomy is a procedure that restricts the amount of food you can consume by removing up to 2/3 of the stomach and leaving behind a smaller stomach about the size of a medium banana. This procedure also 1 18

suppresses your body’s production of ghrelin, which is the hormone that causes hunger. WHAT ARE SOME NON-SURGICAL OPTIONS? Surgery may not be for everyone. Non-surgical options for weight loss include medically supervised weight loss programs. Medically supervised weight loss options include supervised meal replacements, activity programs, and anti-obesity medications. Incorporating a comprehensive approach to managing obesity helps patients stay accountable, while creating a healthier relationship with food. Many times, insurance will even cover these programs. WHY CHOOSE A COMPREHENSIVE WEIGHT LOSS CENTER? A comprehensive weight loss center has a multi-disciplinary team of experienced providers who fully understand your unique needs and goals. When you research your options, select a program that addresses every aspect that contributes to long term success such as nutrition, fitness, and behavior modification. A patient advocate, one who has had surgery themselves, can be extremely helpful. Ideally, choose a certified Center of Excellence where you feel welcome and understand what to expect each step of the way. As with any decision, ask questions, consider your options and most importantly, take action so you can live the healthy life you desire and deserve. Laughing MATTERS READERS SPEAK UP (SORT OF) By Ryan G. Van Cleave | Illustrations by Darcy Kelly-Laviolette

A

fter the recent wildly successful column, “Ryan Responds to Reader Mail,” I decided to give that format another try. But something went awry. Instead of me enjoying my typical mountain of glowing mail, it’s all addressed to Gladys Goodberry, who ran a now-defunct column for Sarasota Scene entitled “Gardening the Gladys Way: Plantings for Fun & Profit.” Why did I get her correspondence instead of mine? That’s for some future kid’s dissertation in chaos theory to unpuzzle. It seems a shame to let all this earnest, earth-friendly mail go unanswered. So, I’ll ignore the fact that I have the opposite of a green thumb and do what I can to help out. Hold on to your garden shears, folks! LETTER ONE I’d like to try a garden, but I’ve never grown vegetables in Florida. Can you recommend a good resource? —“Getting Healthy” The best resource I can think of is Detweiler’s on Palmer Boulevard. Not only for the homegrown vegetables you can just buy off the shelf versus grow, but because they have old-fashioned, hand-dipped ice cream made at Yoder’s Southern Creamery right here in Sarasota. Might I suggest the blueberry cobbler flavor in a cake cone with rainbow sprinkles? In terms of flavor, that’s about as good of a resource as you can get. (My wife—who is reading over my shoulder—has suggested that you might be asking about resources to support YOUR gardening. I assume my wife is wrong. It’s really, really hot out there, and every time I’ve tried to start up a garden, it went so, so wrong. My advice? Leave the gardening to the professionals. Let the rest of us eat ice cream!)

LETTER TWO I have an old privet hedge in the garden which is dying in patches. Could this be due to honey fungus? Also, if I remove the hedge, what should I replace it with? —“Needs Some Privacy” The honey badger (Mellivora capensis—also known as the ratel) is a mammal widely distributed throughout Africa, Southwest Asia, and the Indian subcontinent. While the more athletic versions of the honey badger can indeed get a fungus between folds of fur and on their nails from spending too much time on pool decks or locker room showers, I find it very hard to believe that any honey badger came to Sarasota and spread said fungus to your hedge, of all things! But just in case the one-in-a-zillionchance problem happened, and this isn’t a bizarre “what if?” head scratcher, I’ll answer. Tear out that privet hedge immediately and replace it with…a sandbox. I hear honey badgers like to make sandcastles. Thanks for the question, Needs Some Privacy. LETTER THREE My tomato plants have plenty of flowers, but they all drop off without setting fruit. Is some bug to blame? —“Confused in Casey Key” No. It’s your Cousin Emma who’s screwing with you as payback for what happened last Thanksgiving with the garlic mashed potatoes that were promised but never delivered. You know what you did (or rather DIDN’T DO), Confused in Casey Key. Right this terrible existential wrong and your tomatoes will flourish. LETTER FOUR My wife and I are having a dispute. She thinks you can’t grow asparagus in Florida. I say you can. Am I right? —“Loving Those Greens”

HEROES

Thanks for asking, Loving Those Greens. LETTER FIVE I’ve had a fantastic crop of tomatoes in my greenhouse this year, but they came too late. It’s past the right season for them. Now I have this big pile of unripe green tomatoes. I’ve decided to pick them and bring them indoors. Will they ripen? —“Dreaming of Tomatoes” Answering your questions, Dreaming of Tomatoes, is like going after a mosquito with a bazooka. The answer is…eat the green tomatoes. To help you out, I’ll give you my top six choices for dealing with green tomatoes, in order of tastiness. 1. Fried green tomato burritos 2. Green tomato ketchup (make sure you use honey—perhaps my buddy Needs Some Privacy can help you with that!) 3. No-sugar green tomato relish 4. Green tomato parmesan bake 5. Green tomato cake with brown butter icing (pecan or walnuts really dress this up) 6. Green tomato and banana sundae 7. Just kidding with that last one. Or maybe not. Give it a try and let me know how it goes! LETTER SIX I miss your articles, Gladys. You’re SO much better than this “humor” writer who replaced you. What kind of leverage does he have over the editors of Sarasota Scene? Come back soon, Gladys. We miss you! —“My Heart Is Browning” I had to re-read your pseudonym twice because I kept seeing “My Heart Is a Brownie.” I’m trying hard not to image it served with walnuts, fudge frosting, and a dusting of confectioner’s sugar. To answer your question, though, my leverage is this. I have an elite team of Smurfs under my control. They might live in mushrooms, but if they put their mind to it, they can make anyone’s life miserable. (You’ll see, My Heart Is Browning. You. Will. See!) I’ll pass your warm wishes on to Gladys!

If you want to see Gladys Goodberry’s column make a triumphant return to the pages of Sarasota Scene, please keep that to yourself. Now if you’d like to see more “Ryan Responds to Reader Mail” installments, please signify your interest by climbing atop the hill on the east side of the Celery Fields at midnight and firing up the Ryan Signal. (It’s a lot like the Bat Signal, only it’s a gigantic, stylized R appearing in the sky versus that creepy bat thing). Also, please don’t hop the fence to play Tease-the-Tigers at Big Cat Habitat after using the Ryan Signal. Tigers have absolutely no sense of humor, as evident from the “fan mail” they keep sending me.
