THE 2021 HOLIDAY SEASON ROLLS INTO FULL SWING THIS MONTH AND I HOPE YOU’RE MAKING THE MOST OF IT. November is a wonderful time to count blessings and celebrate our good fortune that we are able to spend our days in a balmy destination location with rich cultural offerings. I recently attended a Great Escape Sarasota Orchestra performance that was special in so many ways. We were treated to the guest conductor, Steven Jarvi, a much-in-demand and much-traveled groundbreaker, who was entertaining in his own right. He transported us through the Roaring 20’s with memorable selections from “Sweet Georgia Brown” and “St. Louis Blues March” to “An American in Paris.” Truly an unbelievable performance. The two hours flew by in no time. That marvelous evening at Sarasota Orchestra felt like a gateway to the season here in Sarasota. Both the audience and venue adhered to Safe Arts Sarasota protocols. Volunteers at the doors of the Beatrice Friedman Center were so very cordial when we entered the building, tables were set apart for four people each, and masks were plentiful. These practices helped ensure everyone felt comfortable while having a great time at the event. This season, wonderful visual art exhibitions are scheduled along with world class live performances. These artists and performers are masters who have spent lifetimes honing their craft, even during hiatus. Now’s the time when you can support and enjoy the arts with your ticket purchases. A few October and November events did need to get postponed to later in 2022 as organizations work hard to keep everyone safe while delivering an entertaining program. Many rely on these events to fundraise for the vital programs they support that contribute to the overall culture and wellbeing of our unique and appealing community. I have heard of people canceling tables at philanthropic events, while telling organizations to keep the seat charges. The gesture is indeed admirable but often the per seat charge simply pays for the event. It is fundraising during the event itself that provides meaningful support for organizations’ good work. So we are all eager for attendance to pick up and give you those wonderful opportunities to mingle and demonstrate support to these charitable organizations In this issue, Sarasota Scene “paints the town” with help from Bradenton native Leah Roddenberry, the reigning Miss Florida who competes for the Miss American title in a few weeks. Look for her photo spread and profile in these pages, and see her on your television soon.

from the publisher As you prepare to celebrate the holidays with family and friends, check out the amazing resources highlighted in our November “Fashion Forward” section this month. You’ll discover convenient shops and artisans ready to help you put together that perfect outfit—whether for poolside, black tie, and anywhere in between. I love nightlife as well as the wonderful natural amenities of this area, and among my favorites is our Legacy Trail. We are seeing signs of increased use earlier than usual as we head into season. Construction continues on the North end and is getting closer to completion. I often travel down to Venice to the south where I see fewer users, but I imagine that hidden gem will get more use as season marches on. There has been an increase in e-bikes, a great way for people to get out and enjoy cycling and just being outdoors. Occasionally groups of five or six arrive on powerful mopeds and seem more interested in speed than the beautiful trail. Perhaps the rental stores or family friends could encourage an awareness of those sharing the trail. Recently, I dusted off my rollerblades. No falls yet, although I am padded and anticipating. It has been fun sharing the path around Nathan Benderson Park. I am the guy on Sunday who skates two-thirds of the path and then returns the way I came. I still have not mustered the courage to do the bridges. But the weather has been amazing and the people you meet are wonderful. I would also like to give a shout out to our readers. We receive fantastic feedback on our monthly feature articles, philanthropic articles, profiles of inspirational people, and our arts and cultural content. Sarasota Scene has been rewarded handsomely by our readers over the last year and more with a dramatic increase in subscriptions.

THE FUTURE, STARRING

THE PLAYERS EYES EXPANDING SOUTHWEST FLORIDA’S ‘CULTURAL COAST’ Community theatre is designed to inspire creativity and engage an entire population. It encourages participation in the performing arts that sets the stage for the future. It’s a grassroots initiative The Players Centre for Performing Arts has championed across the Suncoast since its inception nearly a century ago – and that mission continues to live on. Community theatre, locally built with volunteers from actors to ticket takers, has created what’s now a hallmark attraction for thousands of patrons near and far flocking yearly to the Sarasota-Manatee area for high-quality entertainment.

You That partnership further promotes thought-provoking creativity regionwide through donations to the Center Stage Capital Campaign. The Players Centre recently announced its 92nd season of shows with six indoor performances, beginning in October with [title of show]. That series is only possible through the active involvement of local volunteers – ushers, actors, stage crew and donors – who shape the area’s arts and culture productions. Staging the region’s future starts in the community and The Players Centre is excited to lead the way.

That remains the signature purpose of The Players Centre as the organization looks to spotlight Lakewood Ranch, which was recently named the nation’s best-selling community in a midyear survey by real estate consulting firm RCLCO. The community theatre will build a two-stage, multi-use facility in the Waterside Place development, providing easy access to impactful shows, as well as an extension of The Players Studio’s longstanding programs offered for all ages. The Players Centre, temporarily located in its new 152-seat performance space known as “Studio 1130” in The Crossings at Siesta Key, aims to achieve this goal through its ongoing Center Stage Capital Campaign – the fundraising driver to raise $26.5 million and stage shows by 2025 in Lakewood Ranch. But it’s not an initiative strictly beneficial to The Players Centre. The community is a stakeholder in molding what’s now a more than $340 million nonprofit arts and culture industry on the Suncoast that impacts local families, businesses and education.

Wonderful FEELING JOAN AND DR. BART LEVENSON ON THEIR PHILANTHROPIC MISSION By Laura Shoemaker | Photo by Nancy Guth

More than 20 years ago, Joan Levenson received a letter from a local nonprofit delivering early childhood education and working to strengthen families that was asking for her support. It seemed like they did great work, so she decided to send a small donation. Later, driving on Orange Avenue, south of Dr. Martin Luther King Way, she noticed a white building with a colorful sign and the name Children First. It was the same organization she had sent the donation to that was doing so much to help children and families. Joan pulled her car into the parking lot and went inside to learn more. MOVED BY THE CHILDREN FIRST MISSION Joan was introduced around a few classrooms and learned that not only did the agency serve children and their families, but it was the sole provider of Head Start and Early Head Start programs in the entire county. She too believed that all kids and families deserve stability and a solid foundation in life and found the attention on strengthening the entire family together incredibly important. Soon, Joan returned for another tour with her husband, Dr. Bart Levenson. The pair made more visits, and each time, became increasingly moved by the programs at Children First.

Since then, the Levensons have grown into steadfast supporters of the agency. Their impact on the organization and the vulnerable population it serves is wide-ranging. After making their first gift in the year 2000, the two eventually deepened their philanthropy through support of Children First’s annual fund, but knew they had more to offer. Through the agency’s award-winning Families First Institute, Joan and Bart have invested in classes aimed at the entire family’s well-being, such as the Nurturing Dads Initiative. Their philanthropic support helped Children First to design the course just for dads, making it possible for them to attend with no barriers. Nurturing Dads has now graduated over 2,000 fathers and even earned the 2019 Be More Knowledgeable award for Educational Outreach by WEDU PBS, selected from esteemed organizations across 16 counties. Committed to transforming as many lives as possible, the couple helped to fund the opening of Children First’s 14th location in the Sarasota Housing Authority. While the agency serves hundreds of children and their families annually, there is still a waitlist for services, especially infants and toddlers. Seeing this need in the Newtown community, Children First partnered with the Housing Authority to convert one of its portables into two brand new classrooms. NOVEMBER 2021 | SARASOTA SCENE

structure of their annual giving. As members of Children First Forever, the agency’s legacy society, they have made an investment that ensures hundreds of children and families have access to the services they need to thrive and opportunities for success—now and into the future.

Now with 15 sites across Sarasota County, Children First ranks in the top 1% of all Head Start programs in the nation. They serve 775 families a year; nearly 89% of whom live at or below the Federal Poverty Line of $21,960 for a family of 3.

As they are financially secure and their family is small— just the two of them and one grown daughter—they feel they have more than they need to support themselves in retirement.

This year, the couple became Diamond Circle members through their support of Children First’s 60th anniversary challenge match, helping the agency exceed their goal and raise over $2.3 million for its comprehensive services. This support is crucial in supporting the organization’s mission and has aided many families who have been critically affected by the ongoing pandemic. FROM UPSTATE TO THE GULF COAST Bart and Joan married 60 years ago, after first meeting on a blind date in Rochester, New York. At the time, Joan was completing a master’s degree in Education; Bart was pursuing post-graduate training on his way to becoming an orthodontist. The couple lived in Rochester for thirty-five years, successfully raising a daughter and enjoying fulfilling careers. In the early 1990s, they vacationed in southwest Florida. Inspired by the sunshine and their daughter’s recent move to nearby St. Pete, the idea soon bubbled up: they would retire to Sarasota. Since their arrival, Joan and Bart have turned their passion for helping others into part of their philanthropic plan. Their commitment to helping those in need extends from vulnerable children and families to older adults and people in recovery, as well as arts and culture organizations and Jewish charities.

“Our only priority is charity,” says Bart. The couple works with a financial advisor and local community foundations to help organize their philanthropy. “We don’t live high on the hog and would rather give the money away then spend it on ourselves. It’s a wonderful feeling.” Bart is particularly enthusiastic about two different types of gift structures that benefit the organizations they support: donor-advised funds (DAF) and charitable gift annuities (CGA). While creating their DAF provided the Levenson’s an immediate tax benefit, it also helped grow their initial investment and even assisted the couple in recommending grants to charities like Children First with the earnings, enhancing their impact. Bart and Joan also have multiple CGAs and describe them as “self-funded pension plans” that aid them in retirement. “Including nonprofits in our retirement investing plan is liberating, and for people that don’t have a pension plan, a gift annuity is a wonderful vehicle to supplement or provide for all of your needs.” But the most important benefit to the Levenson’s? Making philanthropy part of their retirement plan and shifting focus to what they can do for others.

They thread the needle and make a perfect fit between fashion and entertainment.

Phantom Thread (2017)

Daniel Day Lewis has always looked good and believable, no matter what he’s wearing, from Lincoln’s iconic top hat to that devious looking lid he wore as Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood. But his stylish performance and possibly his swan song in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread is a heady performance that you will never forget. It’s hard not to stare at Daniel Day-Lewis as a peculiar, charismatic, and aloof couture dressmaker and designer smitten with a waitress who becomes his muse, played magically by Vicky Krieps. The film sizzles, capturing the world of a man driven by his passion and fashion senses, while his home and family life are always strangely out of whack. Lesley Manville also shines in this film set in 1950s London. Phantom Thread received acclaim for its acting, screenplay, direction, musical score, costume design, and production values and was chosen by the National Board of Review as one of the top ten films of 2017, while being nominated for various Academy Awards, including Best Costume Design. Whether this often strange narrative works well for you or not, one thing is certain. You will never forget Lewis as Reynolds Wood—and how he dressed the women he designed and desired.

Halston (2019)

A man with one name. A man who was the number one answer when a starlet or celeb was asked, “Who are you wearing?” All the ups, downs, ins, and outs that make up the fashion industry are captured in one stylish American biographical documentary. Written and directed by Frédéric Tcheng, this film tells the story of the American fashion designer, Roy Halston Frowick—better known as Halston. From his hob-knobbing with Jagger and Jackie Kennedy at Studio 54 and being the hottest item on the runway to being overproduced for the masses at Target, this mesmerizing and hard hitting film leaves little on the cutting room floor. This riveting film shows the icon’s fall from grace, while offering an empathetic insight into his models, clients, and lovers—and ultimately highlighting his battle with and eventual death from AIDS in 1990. With introspective commentaries from the likes of Liza Minelli, Marisa Berenson and Joel Shumaker, plus archival footage that includes Brooke Shields and Andy Warhol, you feel the breadth of a man, a brand—and the downfall of an iconic designer.

Prêt-à-Porter released in the US as Ready to Wear

(1994)

Altman co-wrote, directed, and produced this satirical comedy that was maligned by many critics but deserves another look—like an old suit in the back of your closet. Shot ambitiously on location during the Paris Fashion Week with a host of international stars, models, and designers, it’s a potpourri of flash bulbs and fashion. Rounding out what’s vogue is an all-star cast of international faces that includes Anouk Aimée, Marcello Mastroianni, Sophia Loren, Kim Basinger, Lauren Bacall, Julia Roberts, Tim Robbins, Lili Taylor, and Sally Kellerman.

As the pretty and powerful people—models, designers and journalists—gather for Paris Fashion Week, Olivier de la Fontaine, a Fashion Council big shot chokes to death on a sandwich, leaving behind his wife, a mistress, and a mysterious Russian companion who has fled the scene. As the death’s being investigated, three rival magazine editors fight for the story and exclusive services of a hot photographer who sexually humiliates the three; leading them to vow vengeance. Filled with fashion, occasional laughs, and salty situations, this film is Altman’s imitation of a Fellini romp: a guilty pleasure for some and that dress to be avoided at all costs for others. The film is noteworthy just for assembling this many fashion icons and faces in one place.

Designing Woman (1957)

Today it’s called a Rom Com, a romantic comedy where we meet a couple who overcome a lot to fall in love. And the reason why one romantic comedy works better than others is the chemistry of the couple in question and our eagerness to root for them to get together. The formula works to perfection in Designing Woman. The story finds two young professionals from the opposite side of the cultural tracks getting to know each other and adjusting to each other’s lifestyles while falling in love. Vincente Minnelli directs Gregory Peck and Lauren Bacall in this enjoyable film that earned George Wells an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Peck plays sportswriter Mike and Bacall plays Marilla who designs clothes for artsy celebs. The pair fall in love over a whirlwind eight-day romance which ends with marriage. Along the way there are mishaps, misunderstandings, and miscommunications that lead to friction and fighting. Bacall and Peck wear their fame effortlessly while looking so marvelous together.

The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

Okay, already. We know Meryl Streep can do anything. And wear anything. She slips into her roles the way a celebrity puts on a pair of Dolce& Gabbana from a Swag bag—with great joy, hunger, gratitude, and the knowledge that she is best and deserves the best. Streep is the best. And not surprisingly, she is at her best playing Miranda Priestly, a powerful fashion magazine editor. This comedy-drama directed by David Frankel is based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel of the same name. Notables Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt play the roles of hapless and hopeless assistants who eventually rise to the occasion and design their own lives. While many in the fashion industry avoided appearing as themselves in the film for fear of displeasing US Vogue editor Anna Wintour, widely believed to have been the inspiration for Priestly— others allowed their clothes to be used, making it one of the most expensively costumed films in history. In time, Wintour herself came around and tempered her initial skepticism, giving the film and Streep in particular a passing grade. Meanwhile films fans world-wide turned a film with a $41 million budget into a $326 million box office smash—proving once again that the world of high fashion can be truly be in vogue.

Sarasota Scene caught up with Leah Roddenberry amid her whirlwind of responsibilities as Miss Florida. She is currently preparing to compete in the 100th Anniversary of Miss America this December. Finals will be televised on December 16 from the Mohegan Sun Resort in Connecticut.

up at Miss Florida that year. The next year, I became Miss Tampa 2020 and due to COVID, the Miss Florida competition was postponed an entire year. I became the longest serving Miss Tampa in history and then went on to become Miss Florida 2021 this past June.

Miss Florida? I first watched the Miss America Competition when I was 4 years old and knew from that moment that I wanted to be Miss America. I started participating in the organization when I was 6 years old. I had the unique opportunity to serve as Miss Florida’s Outstanding Teen not once, but twice, in 2013 and 2015, and traveled during my high school years serving the state of Florida.

As a young girl, I was terribly shy and refused to speak, which translated to having low self-esteem and not even wanting to raise my hand in class due to a fear of what others thought about me. Through my years of participating, I have now gained a passion for public speaking and ultimately being a voice for those who need to be heard. I think there is some irony in my journey from being terrified to speak to now becoming eager to utilize my position of influence as a microphone to stand up for what I believe in while advocating for those who need to be heard.

a full time job, so I did defer from law school and after my year of service and hopefully after serving as Miss America, I plan to use the scholarships I have gained and apply them to law school. My longterm goal is to serve in a national press secretary role. How do you prepare to compete? Preparing for the competitions takes a lot of work and dedication. There are multiple phases of competition, so it requires time and effort to ensure I feel my best in every phase. The interview phase requires staying educated and informed on the news and current events. Red carpet wear meant I needed to practice walking in my evening gown and feeling my best. The talent phase meant practicing every day in the dance studio. For me, talent requires extra effort because at 17 years old, I underwent spinal fusion surgery and had two rods and 18 screws fused to my spine to correct a 63 degree curvature in my back from scoliosis. It has not been easy recovering from this surgery and trying to maintain flexibility in my back to dance, but I am determined to showcase my talent and use my performance as a message of inspiration and hope to let people know that they can overcome any roadblocks in their paths. 66

Now, I am a national spokesperson for Setting Scoliosis Straight Foundation to share my story and inspire other individuals to not be ashamed of their scars but to utilize them as catalysts to do good and achieve their dreams! Can you share some fond memories of growing up in this area? I have lots of memories spending time with my older brother, making the 45-50 minute commute to Cardinal Mooney High school in Sarasota at 6:30 AM every day. One of my favorite opportunities was participating in the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce youth leadership group, in which high schoolers from the surrounding schools learned about the city government and met numerous leaders in the area. Sarasota is a beautiful area and also provides great experiences learning about the environment and wildlife. One of the organizations in my high school focused on protecting the environment, so I was able to take a field trip with Mote Marine and explore different preserves and habitats by boat. It was really cool! When back in the area, my favorite place to go is St. Armand’s circle— to walk around, shop, and of course eat. I love eating at Shore— their calamari salad is amazing. 68

What is your fitness & beauty routine? I love going on long walks with my mom and sister around our neighborhood. I find it’s helpful for both my physical and mental health and wellness. I also love aerobics and high intensity style workouts that engage my entire body. I like to find fun ways to move my body that make working out something I look forward to doing rather than a chore. In terms of beauty routine, I try to drink as much water as possible and always make sure I take off my makeup before going to bed, no matter how late it is. I refuse to fall asleep with makeup on. Being from sunny Florida and the Sarasota area, I always wear sunscreen when going outside and on long walks to protect my skin. I would rather be pale and have healthy skin than trying to get a tan and risking my health. Fitness is incredibly important to me and it is critical I maintain a healthy lifestyle, especially with my demanding schedule and travels. Do you have any favorite Thanksgiving traditions? I love thanksgiving because it includes family time, gratefulness, and using what I have to serve others.

Thanksgiving day usually starts bright and early as my sisters, mom, and I (and maybe my brothers, if we can get them out of bed!) get ready to participate in our hometown turkey trot. We then come

home, put on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, and start cooking delicious side dishes to go with the turkey. This includes sweet potato casserole, snap beans with bacon, rice dressing, corn soufflé, and more! My mom is from Louisiana, so you can always count on getting tasty food in my house. It’s always been a tradition that my family performs an act of service on Thanksgiving. Some of my favorite memories are from serving Thanksgiving meals at the Salvation Army with my family. I appreciate my parents instilling the value of service and charity into my siblings and me starting at a young age! What message do you want to share as Miss Florida? My overall message and a theme that has run throughout my journey to Miss America is one of perseverance and never giving up. From being told I would never dance again after my spinal fusion surgery, to having people tell me that I was never good enough and couldn’t achieve the goals I set for myself, I have never given up on my dreams. I have transformed through this organization and learned to not be afraid to use my voice and pursue my goals unapologetically. I hope to inspire every person, and especially young women, to believe in their potential and know that they can make a difference in their communities and achieve everything that they set their minds to. My goal is to make every person I meet feel special and better about who they are. Most of the time, you can find me in a chic, but appropriate, style dress for my Miss Florida appearances. I like to say my style is classy, feminine, and fun. But if it were up to me, I would be in gym shorts and workout clothes with zero makeup every day if I could!

Fueled by creativity and a commitment to education, they now offer a host of educational opportunities and a robust repertoire of performances.

GET INVOLVED Educational opportunities are integrated into almost everything the Manatee Performing Arts Center does. “Being an active part of the community is really important to us. We want to facilitate opportunities in the arts for as many people as we can,” says Artistic Director, Rick Kerby. Through their Conservatory for the Performing and Technical Arts program, the Manatee Performing Arts Center offers educational opportunities for individuals ages three to 90.

We’re creative people, and that has allowed us to adapt to overcome obstacles and find ways to carry out our mission of sharing arts with the community,” says Kerby. With a full and exciting schedule of performances leading into 2022, the organization is ready to bring theater and the arts fully back to life. Thanks to two theaters, all-star production teams, and talented performers, patrons can expect an experience like no other. “We’ve missed our audiences,” says Kerby. “The hours of work that production teams and actors devote to a performance are all in service to creating an unforgettable moment for the audience.”

SUNCOAST PARTNERSHIP: WORKING TO END HOMELESSNESS Whether it’s the year-round wonderful weather or the generosity of our neighbors, we see quite a few homeless citizens in our community. According to Endhomelessness. org, 600,000 people were experiencing homelessness in the US in January 2020. 70% were individuals, while the rest were part of families—often with children. Yet what’s the truth? Do we have more homeless citizens in our area than do other cities in Florida, or other places in the country? According to Chris Johnson, the CEO of the Suncoast Partnership to End Homelessness, the misconception of there being a large local homeless population comes from how we drive down certain streets and notice what seems to be a lot of homeless citizens there. People naturally assume other areas are equally populated with those experiencing homelessness, too. “Those are the most visible, and are usually those that are the most chronically homeless. They often have severe mental health or substance abuse issues,” Johnson says about this visible population that accounts for about 11% of the area’s homeless. 88

The vast majority of homeless citizens in our area find shelter via the many amazing service provides who partner with Suncoast Partnership, he explains, adding that if we look at the numbers of those who were in shelters from 2016 to 2021, we’ve had a reduction of 44%. That’s not because we’re losing our ability to help, but rather that the need is becoming smaller. Johnson says, “There are 609 fewer homeless people in our community now than those identified as homeless in 2016. Things are definitely trending in a good direction.” Suncoast Partnership would know because they’re the lead agency for the continuum of care in Sarasota and Manatee counties. Johnson explains, “we are the collaborative applicant for federal funding. So, whenever HUD releases funds that come into communities across the entire nation, we submit that application on behalf of Sarasota and Manatee Counties. We’re the recipient of state funding as well. And we pass that funding to local service providers by subcontracting homelessness service providers such as the Salvation Army, Jewish Family & Children’s Services, and St. Vincent de Paul, as well as other agencies and organizations.” Johnson has been with Suncoast Partnership for two years, and it suits him well in part because he has a master’s degree in divinity and was a pastor in Texas for nearly 10 years. When he and his wife first came to Sarasota, Johnson applied to the Salvation Army. They told him that “we can teach you about homelessness, and we can teach you about addiction and recovery,

The more he worked at the Salvation Army, the more he began to see the possibilities for helping the homeless population.

“Despite the trauma they’ve faced, many have hope and work their way out of a seemingly hopeless situation,” Johnson notes. “Lives can be transformed in a relatively short amount of time. I mean, seeing the people that came into the recovery programs when I was at the Salvation Army and then later seeing them clean, sober, and working? And they found a place to stay? Our clients’ resiliency is just so amazing.” Johnson points out that this only happens when a community comes together and says: “You know what? We’re going to take care of those who are the least fortunate. We’re going to take care of those who right now can’t do it by themselves. We’re going to give some help. And we’re going to be here and not give up on people.” That’s how real change happens. And with Suncoast Partnership here to help coordinate and connect all of the agencies and entities into a seamless system as well as identify areas of improvement, we’re on a clear path forward to help transform even more lives.

on the streets, if they get money, food, or clothes— essentially having their needs met—they won’t move from that corner. “All of their needs can be met if they connect to the system. The Salvation Army itself has a free dinner every night—there’s no cost, there’s no limit. We have agencies that offer food, shower, cooling, and all the basic needs, including shelter.” And while some of those shelters are temporary, many are pathways to a safe, stable, permanent housing situation. The average life expectancy in Sarasota County is 81.2 years. People living on the street die 29.9 years sooner. “People need to understand that every time they hand over a few dollars on the corner,” Johnson explains, “they’re extending one more day of homelessness for that person, which is taking years off of their life.” In short, giving on the street is a one-off, and it’s ultimately more detrimental than good, despite the spirit of helping in which it was given. “We want to prevent homelessness,” Johnson says. “But if someone experiences it, we want it to be rare, brief, and one time only. That’s our #1 goal.”

Longboat Key-based expressionist painter Kim McAninch credits her fine arts degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and a 17-year career—which had her designing a wide range of products from wallpaper, fabric, and flooring to wrapping paper and dinnerware— with informing her current work. “My wallpaper and design career has definitely informed my art. I designed in just about every style in respect to interiors and pattern design, so I feel that I have the experience and knowledge to move in many directions. I enjoy now that there is an absence of a set of requirements for my projects. But the very same elements are at play. I am free to use my own innovation with no justification, to explore that balance between representation and design.” Kim’s core subject is the landscape and she has also produced a series of flowers and figurative paintings in her signature style. “I create expressionist art. My color is often intense and non-naturalistic and my application is painterly. While the subject and degree of abstraction may differ, I see that my decisions are made with the same hand, so to speak. I want to offer more information, with less detail.” A suburban Cleveland, Ohio, native, Kim moved to Pennsylvania in 2013, enjoying downtown Pittsburgh living and an urban collective studio space. In 2019, she moved to Siesta Key, where she had visited since1979. Coastal views continue to inform Kim’s work, now held in private collections around the world. In addition to her full-time painting career, Kim also teaches art classes locally in Sarasota, Pittsburgh, and at The Studios of Key Wes. She enjoys helping others discover the techniques of palette knife painting in oil. She is a juried member of the National Association of Women Artists and the Women’s Caucus for Art. Research from the Alzheimer’s Association and Johns Hopkins tell a compelling story about why this is so necessary. Three out of four Americans after age 65 has multiple, activitylimiting chronic health conditions, and their overall risk rises with age. For example, Alzheimer’s disease affects one in nine people over 65. Of those, 72 percent are 75 or older. Frailty affects an estimated 12 percent of individuals over 65 and grows to 25 percent for people 84 and older. Frailty and dementia are strongly related and share common risk factors such as age, chronic conditions, and lifestyle factors. Tackling frailty begins with assessing modifiable risk factors and then managing conditions that compromise brain integrity. These factors include hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, metabolic and nutritional deficiencies. If underlying conditions aren’t addressed, individuals remain at increased risk for hospitalizations, decreased functional status, lost independence, and living their remaining years in institutions. Though we lost the great writer John Le Carré this past December, he left his children with a couple of final manuscripts. Silverview is the last full-length novel, and it was published in October during the week of what would’ve been Le Carré’s 90th birthday. The story is compelling. Julian Lawndsley has left his London banking job and now runs a bookshop in a small seaside town in eastern England. Julian bumps into an eccentric customer multiple times and comes to learn that this man—Edward Avon—had been recruited into the Service. But something feels off. Julian decides to dig deeper and, of course, finds layer after layer of mystery and intrigue that’s right in line with Le Carré’s best stories over his long, heralded career.

Le Carré was a master writer, and this story will be sure to please his fans or earn him some new ones who will find a treasure trove of past work to explore.

War and hippie movement raging around them, and you’ve got more than enough to fuel an ambitious family drama. A word of warning—the book is a whopping 600 pages. Yet don’t let that deter you. Even though Franzen has quite a few digressions and even gives minor characters their moment in the sun, the story moves well and has plenty of warm, funny moments despite being populated by so many utterly flawed, hurt people. The second half of the story, titled “Easter,” leaves the setting of the suburbs and reveals Russ’ boyhood story. While you might end up disliking Russ, we really get to see how Russ became the fallen figure he is at the start of this story. Franzen is always interested in the theater of the domestic, and Crossroads clearly explores the theme of religion.Russ is a pastor, after all. And two of the key scenes in the book—a


arts&culture man washing his enemy’s feet, and a vision within a chapel—have unmistakable religious overtones. Readers who enjoy spending time with the Hildebrandts with be pleased to know that Franzen plans to create two more books that feature the family in subsequent decades. In sum, though, Crossroads is a fine start to what promises to be a noteworthy domestic trilogy.

A CARNIVAL OF SNACKERY (Little, Brown and Company, October 2021) BY DAVID SEDARIS

There’s no doubt about it—David Sedaris is both a first-rate writer and top-level humorist. While A Carnival of Snackery: Diaries (2003-2020) purports to be diary entries, the writing doesn’t have the feel of a diary entry. Diaries have a private, intimate texture that largely comes from them not being written for public consumption. These entries read like things you’d hear in one of Sedaris’ live shows. But let’s be clear—it’s highly entertaining and readable. What becomes evident from the start is the strange life that David Sedaris lives. He zings around the world like a rock star—from the US to Dubai to Tokyo and elsewhere. And he still continues his odd habit of walking around, picking up trash by hand (the local Horsham County Council even named a garbage truck after him, calling it Pig Pen Sedaris). Sedaris covers the type of topics you’d imagine—spitting in the street, the weirdness of language, people fighting in the streets, and dirty jokes told at book signings. If you liked the first volume of his diaries, this one will please as well, and prove a bit more revealing in terms of Sedaris the person, who seems like exactly the sort of person you’d want to have over for every single dinner party.

D

uring a visit to Chicago last month, an old college buddy (he asked me not to use his name in any of “my stories,” so let’s just call him “Shmeve”) told me to meet him at a hole-in-the-wall bar in a mostly abandoned strip mall in the northwest suburbs. “To see the GREATEST THING EVER,” he promised via text about a zillion times. I was suspicious. After all, I’d already seen the GREATEST THING EVER (a pit bull farting on a squirrel), but people have different standards, so I figured I’d go. Just to compare. And because Shmeve said he was buying the first round. As I entered this almost pitchblack bar, I began to wonder if this was some unpleasant surprise birthday party (all the more surprising since my birthday was three months back) or perhaps I’d wandered onto the set of the next Saw movie. “I’ve made a terrible mistake,” I said to the darkness as I began to back toward the front door. Just then, a purple spotlight winked to life, illuminating four black-robed figures on a stage. Their hoods were pulled so ominously low that I couldn’t see their faces. “Oh, a band,” I decided. The first clue was that three of them had guitars, and the other one was behind a drum kit. The second clue was that I’d passed a big sign out front warning LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT. The third clue was my pal Shmeve, sitting a few feet away at a wobbly circular table, waving me over as he said, “This band is great. Totally Accio Awesomeness!” When the music kicked to life and all four performers threw back their black cowls, I realized what this was—a Harry Potter tribute band. All four sported Sharpied lightning bolts on their heads, they all wore big round spectacles, and all had red Gryffindor Forever! shirts under the robes, which they threw off moments into the first song.

I’d read about such things before on some dodgy Reddit thread or something. Called “Wrock bands,” I recalled, with such stellar examples as The 8th Horcrux, Draco and the Malfoys, and The Knockturn Alley Project. “What’s this band called?” I hollered to Shmeve, because the opening song—“I Have a Penguin Patronus”—was really, really loud. As if I could feel my spine rumbling and teeth fillings shaking loose. Shmeve yelled back something that sounded like, and I quote, “asfmmmkrjjkrlffppjh!” After some back and forth shouting, followed by Shmeve holding a crumpled-up flier announcing the event, I finally got it. The band was called Harry2. Which made no sense, I told Shmeve. “Because if you square one Harry, you get one, just like if you square the number one, you still get one. It’s simple math.” I frowned. “They’ve got four Harrys. Harry2 should be a solo act.” As the thump-thumpa wrock music thundered away, Shmeve scrunched up his face and glared at me. “Shut up!” he explained. So, I did. And while listening to the not-one-but-four Harrys do their thing, I drank the homemade bucket of Butterbeer that Shmeve paid for. I have to say, once I got past the idea that I was the only person in the audience not wearing wizard robes or Quidditch player outfits and whose hands didn’t hold a phoenix-feather infused wand, a Nimbus 2000, or a Sorting Hat, the music wasn’t half bad. Some of my particular favorites? • “Why So Sirius?” • “You Wingardium Leviosa My Heart” • “Moody Wasn’t Mad…Just Misunderstood” • “Ten Points from Slytherin” During the intermission, I headed to the bathroom, and when passing a table near the back wall, I heard this pickup NOVEMBER 2021 | SARASOTA SCENE

line: “I’m not wearing my invisibility cloak, but do you think I might still visit your Restricted Section this evening?” I’m not even going to talk about visiting a urinal between two dementors whistling to the tune of “Improvising at Jazzkaban.” Just no. Some things are best left for couchdiscussion with a therapist, amusing as it might be to others who weren’t involved. “They’re the greatest, don’t you think?” Shmeve asked when I returned to the table. “So long as you’re buying the butterbeer,” I said, toasting my friend just as he used his red Gryffindor tie to mop up another spill on the table. Shmeve is nothing if not messy. One time in college, he got written up by his RA over roaches. Not that he HAD roaches in his room, but that the roaches filed an official complaint about how messy Shmeve was. So, we watched the show that really got wrocking. Not quite dog-farting-on-a-squirrel great, but for Muggles, not a bad second or third option. As I drained the dregs of our third round of butterbeer, singer Harry grabbed the mic and said the final song of the night would be “Some Dobby That I Used to Know.” Halfway through that doozy, an old, bearded dude started dancing in the teensy space in front of the stage. People hooted and clapped at the guy’s awkward, herky-jerky moves.

Gosh, that dancing guy looked so familiar. I squinted really hard at him, then bumped Shmeve with my elbow as I asked, “Call me crazy, but is that actually Dumbledore?” Meaning Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, the headmaster of the wizarding school known as Hogwarts. A fictional character, of course, but unless I was butterbeergoggling, that was him! Shmeve gave me a goofy smile, pointed at me with a wand that appeared out of nowhere, and he said the words to a spell I knew well from re-reading the Potter books too many times. “Stupify!” True enough, Shmeve.
