FIRST, I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE WHO COMPLIMENTED OUR FEBRUARY CITY SCENES ISSUE. The most common reaction was, “…read the magazine cover to cover... one feature or article more interesting than the next…. issue showed the community’s depth of design in pictorial features as well as the cover itself.” Indeed, we are surrounded by interesting buildings, landscapes and art as Sarasota and Manatee counties continue to grow and invest in interesting places to live and play. In this issue, we celebrate design in its many shapes and forms. Beforeand-after home design takes center stage as our readers generously share inspiring home transformations, and respected area architects and design experts show us sophisticated and trending strategies to take your space to the next level. We even peek at design in entertainment and education, from set and costume design in must-see movies to a new design major at Ringling College of Art + Design. We are all full of anticipation waiting for our performing arts to return, so we can once again appreciate the Asolo Rep’s set designs—manufactured right here in Sarasota—as well as that huge costume trove at Sarasota Opera. This month I look forward to attending a handful of in-person events, including The Conservation Foundation’s Feast upon the Fields. The organizers have gone to extraordinary lengths to protect their guests and still make the event memorable. The event, like others, is planned around mask wearing, social distancing, small table groupings, and serving protocols to reduce any common handling of shared items. This is just one example of the community adapting to the challenges around us and putting safety to the forefront of event design. We are seeing this more and more, as events are being hosted at The Ritz, Michaels on East, and Selby Gardens. We have outstanding dining establishment that have reconfigured themselves to be as safe as possible. Our wonderful Florida weather

Enjoy the great spots on Main Street Lakewood Ranch or have a great bite on Venice Avenue. We also have wonderful walking and eating experiences on St Armand’s Circle and the Village on Siesta Key. Area hotels are adhering to strict cleaning and staff interaction protocols and have some wonderful dining and cocktail experiences. Visit Sarasota is an active information beacon in advocating safe visits to the area. All of us can become ambassadors to advocate balance between caution and participation during these changing times. As we return to more consistent warmer temperatures, I encourage everyone to get out on the water. It is one of the reasons most of us moved here. Whether it is spending time on the Gulf, Sarasota Bay, or Nathan Benderson Park, water is therapeutic, rejuvenating, and fun.

When I visited my daughter’s family in the great North Pacific over the holidays, we spent many days close to and around the water. She, my son in law, and grandbaby Swift live a block from the beach, and they genuinely love the water. Frankly, I am glad I live in Florida. the cloudy weather and low 40-degree water in the great North Pacific are not really for me. On their encouragement, I did do the 38-degree polar bear dip on New Year. (I would add pictures, but they are too embarrassing.) Maybe I can convince them to relocate to Sarasota. At my daughter’s encouragement, I have put in an order in for a paddle board. But I am a big guy with high center of gravity and a modest sense of balance. So, if you see a cruise ship-sized paddle board out there, it is probably mine. Please everyone; stay safe but make the Scene! Sincerely, John

Carole Crosby joins forces with the
community foundation of sarasota county By Sylvia Whitman
As you might expect from the president of the Asolo Repertory Theatre board of directors, Carole Crosby cares deeply about arts and culture. It’s “what makes me tick,” she says. She credits her parents, particularly her late mother, Ruby, for nurturing this passion. Today, the former professional harpist—turned lawyer, turned philanthropist—celebrates that heartfelt legacy and her own personal drive to connect with others through the Ruby E. and Carole Crosby Family Foundation and the many people and organizations it supports. A FIRST CAREER IN PERFORMING ARTS Crosby grew up in Silver Lake, Ohio. When she was five, her dad headed to Chicago on a business trip, and her mother told him to bring home a harp. It was a curious request.

Not that Carole didn’t get plenty of presents. She was an only child, a late-in-life boon, “so unusual back in those days,” Crosby says. Her parents appreciated the arts. Her dad was very talented and “very, very, very literate,” into theater and Shakespeare, Crosby says. “We did all of that; we used to go to the Cleveland Playhouse.” And her mother traveled the 35 miles into Cleveland with friends to enjoy the opera during the week The Met came to town. Still, Carole had never seen a harp. She thinks her mom “just wanted something special for me, maybe something she felt she never had in her life, so she wanted something like that for me as an introduction.” It was love at first glissando. Crosby attended part of third grade in Sarasota, where Ruby and her twin sister decamped for some winter sun,

Crosby’s desire to connect with and help others has been a constant throughout her life but otherwise she remained an Ohio girl. As a teen, she earned a spot at the Curtis Institute of Music, alma mater of Samuel Barber and Leonard Bernstein, among many notable alumni. One of great philanthropic ventures of the 20th century, the Philadelphia conservatory waived tuition for all its students, whom it selected solely for their talent and promise. For four years, Crosby practiced and performed among some of the greatest musicians of her generation. She joined the Atlanta Symphony and after a year moved to the Detroit Symphony, becoming principal harpist. On the side, she played strings and rhythm at Motown and even played background on recordings for Marvin Gaye. After marrying Larry Wickless, Crosby settled in the suburb of Bloomfield Hills to raise their two boys. She had her career in music, and Wickless had his career in medicine as an osteopathic gastroenterologist and internist. When they could, they visited Crosby’s parents, who had landed in Sarasota’s museum district.
A SECOND CAREER IN LAW After a friend applied to law school, Crosby owned that she shared the same interest, long-simmering since high school. So, she enrolled in night classes at Detroit College of Law. She had two preschool children and her symphony job, but Orchestra Hall was less than a mile from the college. “I was able to kind of cover all of that in one trip. If I had a concert, like on Thursday, I would just skip out of class a little early and drive on down and, you know, walk onstage and do my thing.” When she graduated summa cum laude from law school, valedictorian of her class, she interviewed around town. Decision time. She couldn’t juggle a harp and a briefcase forever. She accepted an offer from a large Detroit firm. Even though Crosby stopped performing, she continued to support arts and cultural organizations MARCH 2021 | SARASOTA SCENE

philanthropy as a patron and donor. When she and her husband needed to get away, they visited her parents and aunt and uncle in Sarasota. Or they flew to Europe, where they had an apartment in Paris, and for a while a little chalet in the Italian Alps on the other side of Mont Blanc. “I like exotic,” she says. Their kids did well; one son became a doctor, the other a lawyer. When professor and practitioner Wickless assumed the presidency of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), the couple moved to Chicago. There Crosby served on the board of the Chicago Alliance Française and headed the national Federation of Alliances Françaises. She also became a Life Antiquarian at the Art Institute of Chicago. A THIRD CAREER IN PHILANTHROPY Chicago winters awakened the inner snowbird in Crosby and Dr. Wickless. “Trying to be open-minded,” they visited Naples, where they had friends. Then they drove to Sarasota, where Crosby’s parents and aunt and uncle are buried. Even though Crosby and Wickless hadn’t been back in a while, when they exited the highway, they drove straight to South Shore Drive, the museum district. “We went right to the old house,” she says. “I just knew that was the neighborhood we wanted to be in. And we’re still in that neighborhood although it’s our second home here.” Once the couple settled for good in 2010, Crosby got involved in the arts and culture community, donating from her family foundation and investing her time, starting with the local Alliance Française. (She took on the national presidency for a second time, too.) She joined the Fine Arts Society, now Arts Advocates, where she eventually became board president. She patronized the orchestra, of course. Living almost next door to Asolo Repertory Theatre, she crossed paths with a number of theater-loving Detroit ex-pats. “It just kind of connected, that’s all,” says Crosby, “one connection to the next.” Asolo Rep invited her onto the board. Theater spoke to her performing arts background. “Each performance is truly unique. It’s live one time, and even though actors may repeat the same lines, it’s never exactly the same twice,” she says. The level of artistry at Asolo Rep also impressed her. “It’s remarkable to

have such a high-quality organization right here in Sarasota.” Asolo connected her to the Hermitage, the Englewood artist retreat that awards the Greenfield Prize to a theater artist. As friends sponsored events there, Crosby attended dinners and lunches and programs. The Hermitage “is where art originates,” she says. “It allows artists to produce new works—as they say, The Art of Our Time.” She joined that board, too. As Crosby dove deeper into local arts and culture, she appreciated how the Community Foundation champions philanthropy by connecting donors and nonprofits. Although Crosby had “pretty well determined” which organizations she wanted to support, moving the Ruby E. and Carole Crosby Family Foundation under the Community Foundation umbrella was “worthwhile,” she says. She trusts the Community Foundation to manage the endowment and alert her to new groups and projects in her areas of interest. Partnering with the Community Foundation has freed Crosby to focus on leadership during this trying year. Arts organizations—“the heart and soul of the community”—depend on the moral support of their boards as they retrench and seek ways to connect with audiences at a distance. The Hermitage is holding outdoor programs on the beach, so popular now that there’s a waitlist. “They’re making a real impact,” Crosby says. “I’m delighted to be involved with that.” And the Asolo has created the Terrace Stage outdoors. “It’s like opening a brand-new theater,” Crosby says, “with lights and whatever and figuring out the seating and the ticketing. It’s been a real project.” These days it feels good to have a purpose. Arts and culture keep her ticking.

The laundry had to be special for this growing family. They wanted the washer/dryer concealed, a sink basin added, and the space decorative, as it is near the entry of the home. We decided to add a ‘mud room’ feature with a bench seat and added storage for household items and pool towels.
While the home is brand new and expresses a more contemporary décor, the clients’ own taste leans more to traditional. That is why they chose the shaker style fronts in the laundry. More Pro Tips from Myriah If you feel overwhelmed by your inventory, try editing out things you don’t wear or use as often and donate those items. Once you have a clearer understanding of your space and inventory, start re-organizing in sections and designate an area for each aspect of what’s going into the space (hanging items, folded garments, shoes and accessories, etc.). Of course, seeking professional will always be most helpful, but there are things that you can do yourself to get started.
Remember, when you can’t see what you have, those items will be unused and useless to you. If you’re spending money on beautiful clothes, shoes, and accessories, you should get to enjoy them! Do you have a decorating “pet peeve?” Mounting a TV above a fireplace not only hurts your neck, it interferes with the flow of the room. I prefer to find an alternative, for example, the custom bookcase with sliding framed mirror panels created for a NY client to hide their smart TV. Any tips for specific rooms? Especially in Florida, a bedroom with a view should not be marred by putting the bed in front of the window or a sofa at the end of the bed. A nice low bench works better. In the kitchen, focus on
lighting—under the cabinets, along with recessed cans, pendants and lovely chandeliers. Are future homes moving away from open space living? That will be interesting to watch. I do see the return of private spaces that can accommodate families learning and working at home. The great room concept for the family to gather, play games, watch TV and listen to music is still very popular. What else do you see trending now? For finishings and hardware, brass and gold tones are replacing chrome and silver. People want lighter furnishings and less formal designs. For those of us who have been “sheltering in place” during COVID-19—spending extra time at home until we get the all clear— this period has tempted many to revisit what we want and need from our living space. Maybe it’s time to reclaim square footage. Highlight a view. Refresh dated layouts. How do professionals master these challenges? To find out, Sarasota Scene asked local architects to pull back the curtain on notable renovation and restoration projects. From modern to historic, these three dwellings have been transformed for style, comfort, and the opportunity to make the most of local treasures.

BIRD KEY ARTIST ESCAPE Echt-Architects partnered with interior designer Marie Bowman and general contractor Nathan Cross to transform a 50 year-old home on Bird Key that has stunning views of the bay and downtown Sarasota.
GOALS: + modernize the 6,000+ square foot space + harmonize the home’s angles and heights + make the oversize entry and living room inviting + add an artist’s studio
Was it a challenge to keep a large, sweeping space inviting? Absolutely! Before the project renovation, the living room was rarely used and described as too large and difficult to furnish. Through layers of architectural elements—including a new fireplace with a statement concrete floating hearth balanced by a warm wood soaring ceiling element—we were able to bring a sense of scale to the space as well as a focal point that is inviting, but also allows one to still appreciate the incredible view just outside the sliding glass doors. — Architect Kortnee Gonzalez, NCARB What else informed your design choices? Glossy kitchen cabinets and a mirrored bar backsplash reflect the incredible water views and allow one to appreciate the site even when seated facing away. Continuity of materials helps tie the spaces together. We worked closely with the client, contractor, and interior designer to mix the owner’s existing furniture with new elements, achieve playfulness with scale, and allow room for the clients’ art collection to shine. — Architect Kortnee Gonzalez, NCARB We kept the interior wall paint a clean white to allow for the client’s artwork to really pop. Did you implement any green or “sustainable” features? Bringing more daylight to the interior of the space was among the project goals— not only into the social areas, but also into the private areas and suite rooms. To that end, some interior partitions between the bathroom and bedroom were replaced by glazed frosted openings. One of the major benefits of these renovations was updating to LED lighting
throughout the house and using ENERGY STAR® kitchen appliances and high-efficiency plumbing fixtures. An updated HVAC system with zones allows for more control, comfort, and efficiency. We also considered finish materials that are environment friendly—such as rectified travertine tile floors, which are durable and long-lasting, and low maintenance quartz countertops, which are durable and antibacterial. — Architect Tatiana White, AIA, NCARB

How did you approach this project? While many would have considered this just another run-down old house ripe for tear down, we immediately understood that there was a solid structure underneath the tattered skin, and that this rapidly disappearing form of Old Florida house was worth saving.
Canopy Cottage was stripped down strategically, keeping as much of the original material in place as possible, and then carefully renovated with great attention to detail and re-using as much existing material as possible. We kept a stack of every board we removed and managed to re-work most of that back into the house, even to the extent of re-purposing old fence boards, which now hang in the front bedroom nook and behind both bedroom doors.

Though it now has air conditioning, the design is based upon natural air-flow throughout the whole house. When the restored windows and doors are open, the breeze flows through from front to back screened-in porches. The name “Canopy Cottage” derives from its location along one of Sarasota County’s specially designated tree-lined streets, where majestic oak trees create a green tunnel along the roadway. —Dean Brenneman, AIA

Enduring Furnishings with an Amish Heritage By Nanette Wiser
T
im Miller was working on the Gulf Coast of Florida in the restaurant industry in 2001, yet couldn’t stop thinking about the handcrafted furniture he’d grown up with in Holmes County, Ohio.
The restaurant business was extremely demanding and required a lot of time away, and Tim wanted a business that would allow for more family time and opportunities for his children. He dreamed of bringing the hardwood quality furniture he remembered from his childhood to Florida. So in 2002, Tim and wife Sarah opened the doors to Miller’s Dutch Haus Furniture, and the business has been a family affair ever since. In the early years, Tim personally transported furniture from Ohio to their first store—3,000 square feet on Beneva Road— while Sarah handled sales. Other family members assisted in 80

the office and on deliveries. Word spread of beautiful furniture with solid, hardwood construction and enduring designs. Before long, Miller’s Dutch Haus was able to hire additional employees and expand the showroom size. Today, Miller’s Dutch Haus has two showroom locations, one on Bahia Vista and a newer site on University Parkway at Lockwood Ridge, as well as an on online marketplace. Showroom visitors can browse individual pieces and multi-piece sets suitable for dining, kitchen, entertainment, bedroom, office, bathroom,\ and children’s rooms. Expanded style offerings encompass contemporary, mission, modern, Shaker, traditional, and transitional. All of their furniture continues to be American-made, and the hardwood furniture is 100% designed and built by Amish and Mennonite Craftsmen, most of them small family shops from Ohio or Indiana. “We love supporting local communities and family businesses,” says Tim. “We also carry motion and upholstery furniture from American companies such as Temple Furniture and Best Home Furnishings.” Miller’s Dutch Haus specializes in custom furnishings, with endless options that include specialty sizes and diverse finishes such as charming paint or natural woods like maple, cherry, oak, and walnut. Their craftsmen build quality kitchen and built-in custom cabinets in all sizes, personalized to the customer’s style. Their artisans can provide bathroom vanities, built-in offices or closets, bar/wine cabinets, built-in entertainment centers, Murphy beds and outdoor kitchens.
What do they see trending lately? “Simple line or modern Shaker as well as mid-century modern in natural wood tones, warm medium to light brown tones, with walnut and cherry are most popular,” says Tim. He also sees high demand for live edge on dining room tables. Customers ask for oak with contemporary gray stains, often paired with cream or white. For those who crave maintenance-free outdoor living, Tim says their Luxcraft Poly Outdoor Furniture collection never requires painting or staining and will not splinter or rot. Let’s take a look at seven engaging films with dazzling design.

Production Design Look no further than the cinematic masterpiece, Parasite, winner of 2019 Oscars for best picture and production design. Written and directed by Bong Joon-ho, the film achieves visual brilliance in all facets of its production, telling the story of the have and have-nots in South Korea as seen through the eyes of two very different families at both ends of the class system. The art direction takes full advantage of this contrast— highlighting the cramped and suffocating living quarters of the poor family against the vast, open-aired space where the wealthy live and breathe in luxury. The result is a film that once seen will never be forgotten.
Set Design Take a flashback to the iconic Film Noir classic Mildred Pierce from 1945, directed by Hungarian-born Michael Curtiz—the man who also brought us that little gem called Casablanca. Mildred Pierce’s set design fully captures the era of 1940’s California and the restaurant set where Mildred Pierce earns her living is another character in the drama. It is here where Mildred first starts off as a waitress and eventually builds her business into a success with multiple locations. So real and authentic are the setsyou will be tempted to ask Mildred to bring you a piece of pie and cup of coffee between her shifts. The combination of great writing, directing and an authentic set – set the stage for the film icon Crawford to win her only best actress Oscar.

Make-up Design An ungodly early call to the Hollywood set is usually met with eye rolls from those who have to get into significant makeup, but it could be the first step in the thespian’s journey to get an Oscar. Few will argue that Gary Oldman is among our finest living actors. But the role make-up had in getting him his only Oscar, portraying Winston Churchill in 2018’s The Darkest Hour is another conversation altogether. Was it Gary or was it the make-up? Actually, it was both, together giving you the illusion that you were watching the great British leader shine during his darkest hour.

Animation Just as Van Gogh has his own category when it comes to painting, 2018’s film Loving Vincent belongs in its own category for originality. A feast for the eyes and the heart, the film tells the complex story of the genius artist in a fashion that mixes mediums as brilliantly as the master used paint. A live action cast is used alongside a green screen, but the real magic is realized by director Dorota Kobiela, a painter herself who took on the arduous task of assuring that each of the film’s 65,000 frames is an oil painting on canvas, created by a team of 125 artists drawn from around the globe using the same techniques as Van Gogh. Part animation, part green screen, part real life actors and 100% brilliant—it’s no wonder that this film won Best Animated Feature Film Award at the 30th European Film Awards and was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 90th Academy Awards. Words fall short in describing the sheer genius and magic of this production.
Cinematography
My Octopus Teacher from 2020 is literally a feast for the eyes and soul, largely because of the poignant storytelling and cinematography of Roger Horrocks. This masterful and beautifully shot documentary tells us, “You will never see the sea the same way.” This largely underwater odyssey is as compelling as it is surprising, introducing the fascinating ecosystem of an underwater kelp forest in South Africa where many incredible creatures survive and thrive. Dare you not to cry and be moved by the relationship that is formed by a seeking filmmaker and his special friend. Required viewing.
Costume Design Little Women is the quintessential period piece based on the master work by Louisa May Alcott. The stellar 2019 version was directed by Greta Gerwig and nominated for best adapted screenplay. Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh grab best actress and supporting actress Oscar nominations. The entire cast shines with memorable performances from Emma Watson, Timothee Chalamet, Laura Dern. Eliza Scanlon and Chris Cooper. It is truly a sight for the senses. To pull off a period piece, you must have exquisite costumes. Period. And this version of Little Women brought home an Oscar for best costume design, proving it’s great to get the part but even better when you look the part.

Sound Design What happens when you put an uneducated White bouncer in a car with a sophisticated Black jazz musician from an iconic nightclub and have them tour the Jim Crow South? Here’s what happens—you get 2018’s Green Book, a film that tells a story about how far race relations have come in our country in this best picture Oscar winner. Through the eyes of two men, portrayed by Viggo Mortensen and two-time Oscarwinner Mahershala Ali, we get the greatest musical lesson of all: You need both the black and white keys to make harmonious music on the piano and in life. Get lost in a soundtrack that mixes classical, blues, jazz and soul to form a great duet— and embraces all the keys to forming a great relationship.

Special Effects Even after all these years, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001, A Space Odyssey from 1968 still holds up with its out-of-this-world special effects. Nominated for four Academy Awards, Kubrick won for his direction of the visual effects and the film is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made. Star Keir Dullea states “Not one foot of this film was made with computer-generated special effects. Everything you see in this film or saw in this film was done physically or chemically, one way or the other.” How ever it was made, please don’t waste your time seeing it on a mere mortal’s TV screen or streaming service. Instead seek out a theatre to see this masterpiece on the big and wide screen for a truly special effect that will affect you forever.

In April 2021, The Plumbing Place celebrates their 35th anniversary, and President John Smithman couldn’t be prouder of the choice he made to become part of it. COMMON SINK MISCONCEPTIONS Smithman says that many customers enter his showroom with the goal of replacing their kitchen sink. Although this is indeed a possibility in many cases, whenever the current sink is undermounted beneath a stone countertop, it’s very difficult to find a new sink with the exact dimensions that will match their countertop cutout. Sure, some contractors will “recut and polish” the opening so that a larger sink can be retrofitted, but finding someone to do this? That can be difficult.
In terms of bathroom sinks, though, customers don’t always realize that a leaky or completely inoperable faucet can often be fixed. Of course, getting a new replacement fixture is the easy way to go, but that can be be pricey. “Many times,” Smithman says, “we’re able to

Another product that’s experiencing a bump in popularity because of COVID-19 is steam systems. NEW DESIGN MAJOR AT RINGLING COLLEGE OF ART + DESIGN
While each of the thirteen majors offered at Ringling College clearly deals with the world of design, the latest incarnation of design education is happening in Entertainment Design, their newest major, which began in 2019. To learn more about design and this new major, I spoke with its inaugural faculty member, Jamie DeRuyter, as well as Chelsea Bruner, a Liberal Arts faculty member who teaches classes in that major, too.
CB: I can’t say it any better than that! Everything is designed. Everything. We are surrounded by it. And something can be designed well, or poorly. We’ve all had the unfortunate experience of something that didn’t work right, or didn’t feel right. Or maybe it was a bad customer experience in a store, or getting lost at the airport because the signage and wayfinding systems weren’t clear. Good design matters. It makes our lives better whether we realize it or not.
Before we talk about the major, let’s talk design in general. What’s the big deal? Why should regular folks care about it?
What’s the most common misconception about design?
JD: Design is everywhere. Everything has been designed. Not just stuff, but experiences, too! We all take design for granted but stop and think about the design of anything that’s in front of you right now. That coffee cup? That iPhone? That car? People thought about YOU when they were designing those things. How are you going to pick it up? How do you interact with it? How does it make you feel in your hand? When it comes to experiences—as a guest, concert goer, customer, patient—it has to be good! You want that show to make you laugh. You want the music to make you dance. You want that surgery to go well and your recovery to be successful and comfortable. We all need designers to make our stuff—and our experiences—to be amazing!

JD: That it’s window dressing. That it’s making something merely look good versus be actually be good in the way that really matter.
I sometimes her about the term “design thinking.” What’s that?
CB: Put simply, Design Thinking is a framework for creative problem solving. As a methodology, it’s often described as a process with certain steps that are worked through to arrive at a solution. But more than a linear progression, it’s really a mindset: it’s about putting the user (or “guest” as we refer to them) first, and continually engaging them in the problem-solving process, so that whatever the final deliverable is—be it a product, service, or experience—it truly resonates. We rarely design for ourselves, so engaging users and understanding their point of view is essential. This is especially true in Entertainment Design: delivering
insider on guest experience is arguably the most crucial aspect, so approaching design from the standpoint of the guest is key.
What’s the relationship between design and creativity?

CB: The two are inseparable. Design is all about problem solving: it has a purpose, it has to function—to work—in spite all of the constraints real-world projects impose, such as time, money, space, feasibility. This is especially true in the world of Entertainment Design. These projects are often huge, costly, and time-consuming. Hundreds if not thousands of people are involved to realize something so complex. So, all of those constraints and the practicalities imposed by the real world require an enormous amount of creativity to address.
It sounds like there’s maybe more to design than most realize. In all your experience with the world of design, what has most surprised you?
JD: For one thing, every project is unique; different stories, various media, challenging technical problems. This diversity in projects keeps things fresh and exciting. Being a creative professional means enjoying the process. You can’t spend your career living for opening day or launch day. For another thing, there’s that fleeting moment when the thing you’ve been working on for a year is about to go live...it works….people love it...YAY!!! Then, it’s over. Or maybe the experience lives on for a few years. If you’re lucky, something you create lives forever! But while you’re here, working on it, you have to embrace the process and love it. Entertainment Design projects are fun to create. They make me WANT to go to work every day!
That’s surely a plus!
JD: The themed entertainment industry is all about people. And it’s been incredibly rewarding and motivating to work with so many talented and diverse artists and designers. This plays into also wanting to go to work every day. Great collaborators make the process of creation a joy. CB: Similarly, I’ve been surprised by the uniqueness of every project, but also by the complexity. This is especially true for any sort of environment design, and I’m not sure how well understood that is outside of the field. It takes an army of people with all different kinds of expertise working concertedly—sometimes for years—to realize a project. It really is a labor of love and, yes, you do have to enjoy the process. At the same time, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing something that started as a crazy idea or a doodle on a piece of paper come to life. There’s nothing like it. MARCH 2021 | SARASOTA SCENE

JD: Our Entertainment Design degree teaches students to collaborate with artists, designers, and other creatives to bring stories to life. They develop the visual communication skills of an artist and the problem-solving skills of a designer. With a focus on the built environment, artistic and technical skills are applied to project designs for theme parks, museums, exhibitions, concerts, sporting events, expos, hotels, restaurants, retail spaces, and more for an industry that’s expanding worldwide.
In a single sentence, what is the major about?
CB: Themed Entertainment Design is where stories are translated into experiences.
How does the “entertainment” part play into it?
JD: Our friend Nicole recently asked us, “How can Entertainment Design make the world a better place?’’ I haven’t stopped thinking about that since. We all know entertainment is fun. Certainly that’s mostly it’s intent...to amuse. It CAN be so much more! It CAN make the world a better place! It CAN bring us together! It CAN teach our children lessons! It CAN help us cope with all that life throws at us! It CAN carry on our legacies and stories! It CAN make our lives more rich and fulfilled!

If someone wants firsthand experience with Entertainment Design, where might they go to really appreciate the range and power of it?
JD: Go to the Tampa Bay History Center or a sporting event like the Super Bowl. Go see a show at the Asolo Repertory Theater. And while we hope nobody has to ever visit a children’s hospital, if families need to…why not make it an educational, immersive experience like the Exploratorium at Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville?

InHEALTH FAT OR FICTION? By Braun Graham, MD FACS
HOW HAVE FAT INJECTIONS TO THE FACE IMPROVED THE RESULTS OF FACELIFT SURGERIES? Facial aging is a combination of stretching and sagging of the facial tissues as well as loss of the youthful fat volume in the face. Surgically moving lax facial skin uphill without addressing the facial volume loss may create surgical results that appear pulled and unnatural. Adding fat to volume-depleted areas of the face during surgery restores the volume loss and results in a more refreshed, natural appearance. HOW IS FAT ADDED TO THE FACE? Most middle-aged patients undergoing facelift surgery have some extra deposits of fat in the lower abdomen or hip areas that are useful sites to obtain fat for re-injection. The fat is harvested by gentle liposuction using a small instrument introduced through a puncture in the skin. The fat is processed and immediately re-injected into the face in micro-droplets that will survive without moving out of position. HOW LONG DO FAT INJECTIONS LAST? Scientific studies demonstrate that approximately 70% of the fat cells that are injected survive. The 30% of cells that don’t survive gradually disappear over the first three months. The remaining fat cells survive for the lifetime of the patient. DO FACIAL FAT INJECTIONS HAVE ANY OTHER BENEFITS? Clinical observations have shown that the facial skin overlying the fat injection sites can slowly improve in appearance, texture and sometimes pore size. This secondary benefit is thought to be due to the presence of adult stem cells that reside with the fat that is injected. More lab studies are ongoing to prove this theory.
WHO ARE THE BEST CANDIDATES FOR FAT TRANSFER? Individuals exhibiting moderate facial volume loss who have a pinch of excess fat in the hips, abdomen or thighs can be good candidates. Although it never occurs, most patients wish they could donate more fat in hopes of losing a garment size. Obviously, ultra-thin individuals rarely have adequate fat volume to allow successful harvesting of fat to augment the face. HOW DO FAT INJECTIONS COMPARE TO FILLERS? As a rule, fat injections are ideal to volumize the deeper levels of the volume-depleted face. The fat can be injected in micro droplets at varying depths but are usually avoided at the most superficial levels of the skin. Fillers on the other hand, can be utilized to plump superficial depressions such as the nasolabial creases and marionette or “puppet lines” where they may have more “plumping power” than fat. Fillers are successful temporarily (six to twelve months), whereas living fat cells have the potential to be permanent. Dr. Braun H. Graham is President of the Sarasota Plastic Surgery Center. Meet Artist
DANA LAAG Dana Laag is a draftsman and oil painter, but pencil will forever be her favorite tool. Dana’s drawings are heavy handed, angular, and typically the first step of gathering an idea. They are the foundation of her painting process, sometimes even directly onto the canvas or board. Her subjects are mostly female, and she works from models, friends, photos, and invented figures based on people she meets. Dana loves using the female form because familiarity with her own body enables her to envision, manipulate, and find interesting solutions to obstacles in her process. Dana uses shape repetition and pattern to bend, flatten and skew perspective within a space. She also exaggerates areas of the figure, such as portraying oversized feet, giant hair or a tiny head. The push and pull of varying perspectives creates a flattened, yet stretchy, dreamlike distortion. Continuous lines, shadows, and related forms play upon the composition as a whole and embed the figure within a consistent language that unties perspective. 1 02

THREE MYSTERIES SET OUTSIDE THE US
WHERE RAVENS ROOST BY KARIN NORDIN
find there’s no evidence that a murder took place… until he finds a human tooth in an old barn that’s been taken over by ravens.
Karin Nordin’s debut thriller takes place in Sweden, and its star is Detective Kjeld Nygaard. This book is pure Nordic noir, meaning often-procedural crime fiction told in plain language and having bleak landscapes and morally challenging situations—think Steig Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (which was made into a terrific movie) or Jo Nesbø’s The Snowman (which was made into a terrible movie). Another common feature of Nordic noir is their troubled protagonists, and that’s the situation with Detective Nygaard, for sure. Among other problems (mostly due to poor judgment), his last case went REALLY wrong, so he’s currently on suspension when his father (Stenar) calls and leaves a garbled message—maybe he witnessed a murder? Detective Nygaard has no choice but to drive up to the mining town of Varsund in the far north of Sweden to check on his Alzheimer-plagued father. He arrives to
DANGEROUS WOMEN BY HOPE ADAMS
Things worsen when a body is discovered and the local police decide Stenar is the likeliest suspect. With the help of his partner, Esme, Detective Nygaard works to uncover the truth amidst the snow, secrets, and darkness (literal and metaphorical) of the Swedish landscape. While this is the first in a new series, it has hints both forward and backward such that Nordin’s sequels have more options than most. Detective Nygaard is just likable enough to offset his many flaws, and Nordin’s presentation of Alzheimer’s is heartrendingly accurate in many ways. If you’re up for an icy-dark read in the vein of good Nordic noir, this is a solid addition to your list.

Hope Adams’ debut novel, Dangerous Women, takes place in April 1841 on a ship called Rajah that’s taking 180 women convicts from London to a penal colony in Australia. The crimes of these mothers, sisters, and daughters are all petty, but it doesn’t matter—they’ll never see their homes, family, or dear London again. The story about their three-month journey unfolds via multiple voices through two timelines as we learn about these woman, including a sewing group led by Matron Hayter that’s making a quilt to present to the governor when they land. As one might expect, when you put criminals together in tight quarters for such a long time, tension rises, and before long, someone gets hold of a knife and one of the women is mortally wounded. At that point, what we have is a nautical locked-room whodunnit. All of these women are already guilty of crimes, but did one of them murder one of their MARCH 2021 | SARASOTA SCENE

arts&culture own? Was it a member of the sewing group, one of the other convicts, or even one of the sailors? All of the women’s crimes were petty—but is it possible one of the women isn’t who she says she is, and was capable of such violence even before getting on the Rajah? This book is based on reality—the idea for this story came about when author Adams got fascinated by seeing the actual Rajah quilt at a museum. Yes, the quilting group was real, as was the Rajah and the many women being sent to the other side of the world for crimes that the author insinuates aren’t worthy of such punishment, including specifically Matron Hayter.
There’s an admirable sense of historical accuracy in play here, such as how men on the ship (such as Captain Charles Ferguson, the ship’s priest, and the physician, James Donovan) don’t immediately accept what Matron Hayter says simply because she’s a woman. The nautical terminology and descriptions of the travel, too, feel fairly accurate. If female-led historical fiction is your particular brand of sailing ship, then take a ride with Dangerous Women on the Rajah for sure. You’ll enjoy the journey.

WHO TOOK EDEN MULLIGAN? BY SHARON DEMPSEY
Who Took Eden Mulligan? is the first in a Belfast-based crime series by Belfast author Sharon Dempsey. It starts fast when a blood-covered Iona Gardener bursts into a Northern Ireland police station and confesses to the murder of four friends. The coppers check it out, and there are indeed dead bodies in a Belfast cottage as Iona said, though one of the four is still alive. Barely. On the wall is scrawled a strange message: Who took Eden Mulligan? Eden Mulligan is a woman who vanished right out of her Belfast home during The Troubles (in case you’re not up on your Irish history, this was a time of great conflict in Northern Ireland between paramilitary groups, British security forces, and civil rights groups that lasted for three decades until the Good Friday Agreement in 1998). Chief Inspector Danny Lowe is taken off his job of chasing down cold cases to handle this multiple murder. He’s saddled with a typical amount of personal and marital problems, but this is his chance to get back into Major Investigations—all he needs to do is solve this case. Easier said than done since so much has to do with the deep past. He’s helped by the reluctant Dr. Rose Lainey, a criminal psychologist who has done her best to get away from Belfast. But like we so often see in stories and our own lives, it’s harder than one hopes to truly escape your past. 1 04

Here’s a warning—if you want to Google The Troubles or The Disappeared (people in The Troubles like Eden Mulligan who were believed to be abducted, murdered, and secretly buried), be careful or you might spend a few hours digging into this amazing but disturbing period in the history of Northern Ireland like I did. This isn’t Sharon Dempsey’s first book, and she’s a teacher of creative writing, so it’s no surprise that the writing is smooth, the plotting solid, the research apt, and the ending satisfying. This book is disturbing and gripping in all the right ways.

here are times in one’s life where situations well beyond your control result in an unintended alteration of one’s corporeal dimensions. Alright, let’s call it what it is. Weight gain. And isn’t it strange how certain life situations have nearly mandatory weight repercussions baked right into them? • The Freshman Fifteen at every US college and university. (It’s hidden in the fine print of the tuition bill.) • The Harry Potter Movie Marathon Engorgio Eight (I blame you, Orville Redenbacher!) • The Great British Baking Show’s net loss of six pounds. (Okay, okay. British cooking isn’t ALL awful. I hear Dampfnudel is a zero-sum eating situation.) Well, I’m forced to report that I’ve recently suffered the latest incarnation of weight-related life experiences. Thanks to my COVID-influenced sedentary lifestyle, I am +10 pounds from where I was in March 2020.

And the Atlanta Falcons, whose level of ineptitude is enough for ANYONE to lose their appetite. And if Operation Red Dish doesn’t do the trick, I have three backup plans which have all been certified as “Entirely Realistic” by the BackUp Plan Keepers’ International Society—you might know this fine organization by their acronym, BUPKIS. In any event, here are my plans, presented to you in order of awesomeness. Backup Weight Loss Plan 1—Netflix. I’m going to bingewatch every episode of “Nailed It!” Surely witnessing that many kitchen disasters is enough to curb the taste buds. I mean, have you seen the “Jungle Bungle” episode? Warning: it contains jam-filled animal treats and a coffee cake shaped (more or less) like a sloth.
Okay, okay. 15. MMMMmmmmmmm…jam-filled animal treats…. FINE! It’s 19 pounds! Hey…wait a second…+19 pounds…and they call it COVID-19? Very suspicious. Or diabolically clever. Either way, it’s a little “on the nose.” Or in my case, “in the belly.” In any case, regardless of the actual weight gain amount— which I’ve chosen to challenge all the way to the Supreme Court if I have to since I don’t fully believe what my scale is telling me—I’ve decided to Do Something About It. What’s my plan, you ask? I’m going to write about it Right Here in the pages of my monthly column. Sadly, a little Internet sleuthing informs me that I’m only burning up 12 calories per hour through typing, so I’d need to write, oh, 1,340,874 pages or so to make a real dent in my bonus heftiness. Clearly, I need a more robust plan. Enter red dishes. Yes, it’s true—the color of one’s dinner plates has a scientifically proven relationship to appetite,

Why limit my efforts to the ducks? It’s because my family doesn’t believe I have “dance chops,” so they don’t get to appreciate the fruits of my funkalicious skills. Now if I only knew where to get a white fedora like Bruno’s got in that video…and maybe a pink sport coat, too. The more I think about it, the more I’m realizing that maybe this Bruno Mars dance plan has too much of a wardrobe commitment. I mean, I look great in hats and all, but, you know—fashion’s hard!
