It’s already June. I can’t believe it. Sarasota “season” is behind us, the heat is relentless, and thankfully the streets are a bit calmer. It’s time for me to decompress, to reflect, but to also look forward.

I have some new thoughts for this magazine which should come your way this fall, but not later than January 2026. Afterall, most things and most people need a new look every now and then! Stay tuned!

When planning the editorial for this “Good Life” issue, my mind and the minds of our editorial staff go in so many different directions. The term means so many different things to different people.

One constant is the desire to take a luxe trip that one remembers forever. Who doesn’t love reading about elite destinations and experiences the world offers? In our annual “Elite Escapes,” we feature four properties that offer adventures you’ll remember for a lifetime. The Icelandic property where you can view the Northern Lights sounds like the one for my bucket list.

Custom and personalized jewelry has seen a significant rise in popularity in the past few years. Whether it’s the uniqueness, creative expression, or sentimental value, consumers want to express individuality. We feature the latest trends in custom designs in this issue from a few well-known area shops that may spark your creativity.

You can also find unique jewelry at The Exchange, the venerable consignment shop that donates to local arts organizations and provides grants to students. In our monthly Around Town article, we feature Karen Koblenz, CEO of The Exchange, who tells us about the special finds under the glass in the store’s jewelry section as well as other unique collectibles constantly coming into this fascinating store.

Love art? The story of Palm Avenue Fine Art is one you will want to read. You can learn so much by visiting this wonderful gallery and talking to Colin Thomsen, the store’s proprietor, who is carrying on the vision and legacy of the store’s original owner, the late Robert Wilson. This is a gallery of not only quality fine art, but it is a place to connect with art, and to learn about the artists and the collectors who believe in their work. Stop in for a visit, say hello to Colin, and you may just find yourself owning a piece of museum-worthy art.

While the above referenced articles speak to the luxurious side of the “Good Life,” our story on Waterside Place in Lakewood Ranch speaks to a good life through a health-centric outdoor lifestyle in a lakefront haven. Waterside Place sits on a 36-acre peninsula that is a hub for holistic living, nurturing mind, body and community spirit. Go check it out!

Also, in this issue, you’ll find our monthly feel-good philanthropy article featuring Paul Utter, an inspirational volunteer and fundraiser for Dogs Inc. His contributions to this important nonprofit have helped change countless lives. Dr. Jill Morris, one of Sarasota’s most well-known dentists, pens an article on gum disease and oral bacteria the contributes to other illnesses in the body. Dr. Morris is on the forefront of these important issues, so I encourage you to read her article. Lastly, we feature Selby Gardens, which reminds us that nature is our finest teacher. The Gardens are a testament to lifelong learning and sustainability with immersive classes for the young and old alike.

Speaking of Selby Gardens, I met an interesting gentleman name Alan Ginsberg at George Harrison: A Gardener’s Life, Selby’s homage to the gardening passion of the famous Beatle. The exhibit ends June 29, so if you haven’t yet seen it, be sure to do so this month.

Alan was so impressed with the Selby Harrison exhibition and loved our January issue cover photo and article featuring the exhibition. He asked us to send him copies of this issue for a display in the reading room at the stunning Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Madison, Wisconsin—his hometown gardens.

If you are ever in the Madison area, be sure to put Olbrich Botanical Gardens on your list. Olbrich, with 16-acres of outdoor gardens and a tropical conservatory, was chosen as the site for the Thai Temple, a gift from the Thai government and one of the treasured features of the Gardens, because of its beautiful setting and its proximity to water. Water is important to Thailand because of its implications for good health and prosperity plus UW- Madison has one of the largest Thai student populations of any US college.

Yes, for the most part, it is a good life. We are surrounded by beauty of all kinds. I encourage you to slow down this summer, enjoy the outdoors and our healthy lifestyle. You can find me on my paddle board in the Gulf, biking on Legacy Trail, or taking one of the many outdoor classes at The Bay. If you see me, please say hello!

Paul Utter

A LIFE CHANGED AND SHARED THROUGH DOGS INC

When Paul Utter first walked onto the Dogs Inc campus in 2008, he wasn’t seeking accolades or even a formal role. He was simply looking for a place that felt safe. What he found instead was a lifelong purpose.

Today, Paul is one of Dogs Inc’s most dedicated volunteers, a two-time service dog recipient, a seasoned fundraiser, and a guiding voice for veterans navigating their own journeys with service dogs. His contributions over the last decade-plus have left an indelible mark not only on the organization, but on countless lives forever changed by the dogs he helped raise and sponsor.

Paul learned about Dogs Inc through his in-laws, who lived across the highway from the campus. His mother-in-law, who was completely blind, volunteered at the organization and encouraged Paul to visit. Paul recalls, “Back then, you could come over and take the big dogs that were in training out for walks if they weren’t working. It became a place I felt safe. It was an immediate love affair.”

At the time, the campus looked very different. The buildings were old and modest. “The puppy kennel didn’t even have air conditioning—just fans blowing every which way,” Paul chuckles. Since then, Dogs Inc has undergone a transformation, evolving into a state-of-the-art facility with a full veterinary center and ambitious plans for further expansion. Paul has watched the organization grow, and he’s grown right alongside it.

In those early days, Paul jumped in wherever he could help including socializing puppies, walking dogs in training, even transporting them to offsite veterinary appointments before the on-campus clinic was built. “I just fell in love with it. I did whatever they needed,” he says.

But Paul didn’t stop at volunteering his time. Starting in 2013, he began raising money for Dogs Inc as well. He quickly became one of the organization’s most successful fundraisers. In 2022, Paul was the top individual fundraiser, and he ranked second in 2023. Over the years, his efforts have allowed him to sponsor and name more than 20 puppies—a process that holds deep personal meaning for him.

Originally, it cost $3,000 to name a puppy. That number later increased to $5,000. With each donation, Paul not only chose a name, but also followed the dog’s progress through the program, receiving photos and updates at various stages. “There’s so much satisfaction in knowing where they go and what they end up doing,” he explains. “Sometimes I even get to meet the puppy raisers or the dogs when they come back for formal training.”

One of his most memorable naming stories is that of Snowbird. “I live in a senior community, and so many of the residents—the snowbirds—have supported my

“IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT FREEDOM FEELS LIKE, STICK WITH IT. THE ISOLATION IS OVER.”

fundraising. I wanted to thank them.” That gratitude became the name of a facility therapy dog now stationed at the University of South Florida’s St. Petersburg campus. “Snowbird had a swearing-in ceremony with a stage, a pledge, and even a patrol vehicle. He’s made a huge difference there.”

Paul’s first sponsored dog carried an even more historic name—York—after Alvin York, one of the most decorated U.S. soldiers of World War I. As a veteran himself, Paul often chooses patriotic or military-inspired names. He even recently submitted the name York again, keeping that tribute alive.

His fundraising strategy is as creative as it is community driven. Each fall, Paul approaches local businesses for gift certificates. Donors who contribute at least $20 are entered into a drawing for those certificates. “It’s gotten to the point where I walk into a business and they already know what I’m there for,” he laughs. “The support has just been overwhelming.”

For Paul, his connection to Dogs Inc is far more than financial or logistical. It’s deeply personal. He is a two-time service dog recipient. His first dog, Ellie, helped pull him out of a dark time, both mentally and physically. “Before I got Ellie, I was in a very bad spot,” he says. “In 2014, I had back surgery that left me fused from my neck to my waist. One day, the pain triggered a flashback in the ER. Ellie broke away from my wife, ran down the hall, and jumped

onto the table with me. She got in my face and licked me until I came out of it. That’s how in tune she was.”

Ellie passed away in 2022, and a bench on the Dogs Inc campus now bears her name. Paul’s current service dog is trained not only to detect emotional distress but also to assist with mobility. “He picks things up when I drop them, so I don’t have to bend. He can tell when something’s going on in my head and grounds me. He brings me back to the present.”

Paul now talks to veteran classes at Dogs Inc, offering encouragement and sharing his journey. “After I graduated, I told them I’d do anything for them, just don’t ask me to speak. Six months later, I was on the speaker’s bureau,” he jokes. But the message he delivers is heartfelt: “If you want to know what freedom feels like, stick with it. The isolation is over.”

One of his most meaningful speaking engagements was to a Gold Star chapter in Tampa. “Every person there had lost someone in the line of duty. I didn’t have anything to give them—just being in their presence was powerful. I left with tears in my eyes.”

Paul also credits retired Lieutenant Colonel Kathy Champion, one of the first service dog recipients, as a major influence. When she spoke to Paul’s class about the importance of giving back, the message stuck. “She talked about paying it forward. I’ve been trying to live that ever since.”

He was once honored with a Champion Service Award from former Florida Governor Rick Scott and Attorney General Pam Bondi for his role in the Dogs for Patriots program. “I didn’t do anything special,” he insists humbly. “I was just part of something great.”

As Paul approaches his 75th birthday, he shows no signs of slowing down. “I just want to keep being part of this. The fact that there hasn’t been a single suicide among the veterans who’ve gone through this program says it all.”

His legacy is stitched not only into the Dogs Inc community, but into every tote bag he sends to a puppy raiser, every name he selects for a future hero, and every word he shares with a veteran at the beginning of their journey. In every way that matters, Paul Utter is still walking those paths—just as he did on that very first visit—with purpose, with heart, and with dogs by his side.

The Exchange (formerly The Woman’s Exchange) was founded in 1962 by women who wanted a “business way to support the arts.” It continues to support that mission to this day gifting over $10 million in grants and scholarships to date.

TravelMag named The Exchange one of the “12 Unique Things to do in Sarasota” and it is no wonder why. The 15,000 sq ft plus consignment store holds an array of unusual and affordably priced jewelry, crystal, fine china, silver, oriental rugs, paintings, furniture and lots more.

Its CEO and Executive Director for the past 17 years is Karen Koblenz, who has been an integral part of its growth and continued success. We asked Karen about the varied goodies that are consigned daily at The Exchange and about some storied provenances that are as unique as the pieces they sell.

If you are wondering what to do with a valued piece of jewelry, art, furniture, or collectible, or you are dealing with downsizing or liquidating the estate of a relative, please tell our readers why they should think of The Exchange.

At The Exchange, we recognize that the items you bring to us whether jewelry, furniture, or collectibles, often carry personal significance. For more than 60 years, individuals throughout the community have trusted us to handle their belongings with professionalism and care. Whether you’re downsizing or managing a loved one’s estate, our transparent consignment process is designed to be respectful, straightforward, and effective.

We sell up to 18,000 items a month and offer among the highest commissions in the area—50%-60%—depending on your contract. Most items sell within 59 days, and those that don’t are often donated to local nonprofits. You can track sales online, and checks are mailed by the 10th of each month. Each year, we return approximately $2.5 million to consignors, and that is money that stays right here in our community.

As a 501(c)(3), the portion The Exchange retains may be tax-deductible, and we provide itemized statements to make that easy. More importantly, those proceeds support local arts organizations, K–12 arts education, and scholarships for students pursuing higher education in the arts. This year alone, The Exchange will award $450,000 in grants and scholarships.

When you consign with The Exchange, you’re doing more than passing things along. You’re supporting the arts, investing in education, and giving back to the community we all share.

The jewelry section has some of the most popular counters in the store. Please tell us what a shopper at The Exchange might find in the beautiful displays. There’s nothing ordinary about The Exchange’s jewelry department, where new pieces arrive daily from a diverse group of consignors offering a constantly evolving mix of styles, eras, and stories. From vintage costume jewelry and handcrafted sterling silver to 10k, 14k, 18k, and platinum

designs set with stunning semi-precious and precious stones, every case holds something unique. Some pieces were custom-made for their original owners, others gathered from travels around the world. We’ve even showcased championship rings, diamonds as large as 4 carats, Rolex and Cartier watches. Whether you’re drawn to the simple, the sentimental, or the truly sublime, you’ll find it here, at The Exchange.

The art, antique rugs, and collectibles sections of the store are also quite popular. Please about some of the more interesting pieces one might see.

The Exchange offers an incredible range of treasures from dazzling art glass to handcrafted and signed works of art from local craft shows and renowned national and international artists. You’ll also find brand-new handmade oriental and contemporary rugs, fine china, high-end glassware, sterling silver serving pieces, rare collectibles, antiques, sports memorabilia, and more, all at a fraction of retail prices. It’s the perfect place to set your home, and yourself, apart with one-of-a-kind finds that spark the imagination.

As an example, we’ve sold original works by masters like Chagall, Dalí, and Erté, along with unexpected gems like artwork by Micky Dolenz of The Monkees, a Gio Ponti bowl valued at over $8,000, a Murano glass chandelier, and rare autographed books of historical significance, not to mention a picture that once hung in Elvis’s legendary “Jungle Room” at Graceland. You never know what treasures you’ll find and that’s the fun of The Exchange.

The Exchange has over 260 active volunteers. Please tell us what they mean to daily operations, and how one might get involved.

Our volunteers are the heart and soul of The Exchange. With over 5,000 active consignors and up to 18,000 items sold each month, the work behind the scenes is nothing short of extraordinary. Every item must be individually priced, tagged, tracked, and prepared for sale and because the merchandise doesn’t belong to us, precision and care are essential. It’s a labor-intensive process, and we simply couldn’t do it without our volunteers.

What makes their contribution even more meaningful is that they choose to be here. They give their time, energy, and talents to be part of something larger than themselves. Their efforts directly support arts education, student scholarships, and nonprofit arts organizations throughout our community. At The Exchange, volunteering is more than a task—it’s a chance to connect, to give back, and to be part of something that truly matters.

If you’d like to join this extraordinary team, we welcome both seasonal and year-round volunteers. We ask for just four hours a week. To get started, contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Kathleen Schulte, at 941-955-7859 ext. 307. Together, we make a difference!

Donating more than $10 million in grants and scholarships since inception has positively impacted not only local arts organizations but has helped keep the dream alive

for countless students who wishes to pursue the arts. Which success stories are you most proud of?

What I’m most proud of is that The Exchange has been a champion of the arts since Sarasota’s cultural landscape was just beginning to take shape at a time when support was needed most. Asolo Repertory Theatre, now one of the region’s most respected institutions, was founded in 1959, just three years before The Exchange opened its doors. In fact, we were originally established to support the Sarasota Orchestra, which, like many arts organizations then, was still in its infancy. We continue to support them today.

As The Exchange grew, so did our commitment to the arts. Over the decades, we’ve stood alongside many of Sarasota’s leading cultural institutions, some for more than 50 years. We’re especially proud to have contributed over $1 million to Asolo Repertory Theatre alone. Being there from the early days, and continuing to support these organizations today, has been one of our greatest honors.

It’s incredibly rewarding to witness the transformation of Sarasota into the vibrant arts and cultural destination it is now. I’m proud of the legacy this community is building for future generations, and proud that The Exchange continues to play even a small roll in that story.

Succeeding as an organization for 63 years is no easy task. We at Sarasota Scene should know. We are 68 years strong! To whom and/or what do you attribute the store’s success?

The success of The Exchange is a direct result of the dedication of our volunteers, consignors, and shoppers who have supported us for over six decades. They didn’t just participate, they took ownership. Without their commitment, The Exchange would not be what it is today.

It’s also important to recognize our founders, especially Elizabeth Lindsay, whose vision and leadership were extraordinary. She served on our Board of Directors for more than 50 years, right up until her passing. Elizabeth was brilliant, forward-thinking, and well ahead of her time.

Thanks to the foresight of our founders and the deep commitment of our community, The Exchange has grown into a thriving, community-driven nonprofit devoted to supporting Sarasota’s residents and enriching the arts for generations to come.

When Karen Koblenz isn’t at The Exchange, where can one see you around town?

When I’m not at work or attending one of Sarasota’s many incredible arts performances or organizations, I’m at home with my husband and our three beautiful grandchildren, who bring us endless joy and fulfillment. Michael and I appreciate the arts and enjoy introducing our grandchildren to performances designed to inspire young audiences. It’s a meaningful way to teach them to slow down, use their imagination, dress up for an occasion, and respect a time-honored form of entertainment.

And I’ll admit, I also love shopping, which makes The Exchange a perfect fit for me in more ways than one.

Casa Angelina Praiano,

Italy

While Praiano may not be the most renowned town along Italy’s Amalfi Coast, its charm is unmistakable. Located just beyond Positano, it benefits from being away from the busiest areas, offering breathtaking views and stunning seascapes to the west.

Perched on the cliffs of Praiano lies Casa Angelina, a unique hotel that embraces modern architecture and design amidst traditional surroundings, creating an atmosphere of subtle luxury that few establishments can rival. Most rooms feature terraces that overlook these remarkable views, and similar vistas can be enjoyed in the communal areas.

The interior design showcases a serene white-on-white palette complemented by exquisite details characteristic of contemporary Italian luxury. Guests can enjoy a terrace with an outdoor pool, and access to the beach, which requires a dramatic elevator ride followed by two hundred steps down from Casa Angelina’s cliffside location. The journey is certainly worth it, as Casa Angelina provides complimentary access to La Gavitella Beach Club, a west-facing beach with a dedicated area for hotel guests. Here, guests can relax on sunbeds, enjoy drinks and snacks, and even take part in live music sessions.

Spa services are also offered, along with a fitness and relaxation area that includes an indoor hydrotherapy pool and a state-of-the-art gym. The finest views are reserved for Piano nel Cielo, the hotel’s MICHELIN-starred restaurant, which presents a sophisticated modern take on traditional Campanian cuisine, all while providing breathtaking views of the Sorrentine peninsula at sunset. Additionally, there is the more casual Seascape restaurant, an all-day dining venue featuring an open-plan kitchen.

A daily complimentary shuttle is available to and from Positano. Day trips and excursions to other destinations such as Ravello or Sorrento can easily be arranged through staff at the resort. For adventure, boats and canoes are available on the shore, and boat tours along the coast are also an option.

Casa Angelina is a seasonal hotel that is open from April through October and does not allow children under 12 years old.

Amangiri

Canyon Point, Utah

Have you been feeling a bit overwhelmed this year? Take a break from reality and visit one of the most unbelievable resorts you can find that is basically in the middle of nowhere.

Amangiri, one of the two Aman Resorts in the United States, is in Canyon Point, Utah, about four hours from Las Vegas. The only way to get there is driving down a dusty road along a 180-million-year-old desert. When you first get a glimpse of the stunning work of architecture, you must blink a few times to make sure it’s not just a mirage. Hidden away from society, Amangiri sits on 600 beautiful acres in the Four Corners Region, where Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona meet. Although reaching this remote destination may require some preparation, the stunning desert landscape and distinctive environment make the journey highly rewarding.

The resort was crafted to harmonize with its rugged environment, with the concrete structures tinted to resemble the sandstone of the Utah plateaus. Nestled within a recessed courtyard, Amangiri’s primary pool is flanked by a pavilion and a massive rock formation that appears to extend into the water. Elegant stone fireplaces and rustic wooden lounge chairs establish a cohesive blend between the hotel and the stunning desert landscape.

Amangiri, with only 34 rooms, provides outstanding personalized service throughout your visit. Each room is a suite, distributed across two wings that extend from the main pavilion. The Mesa Wing houses 18 suites along with the Aman Spa, which offers stunning vistas for enjoying the vibrant sunsets. Conversely, the Desert Wing, located on the opposite side of the pavilion, contains 16 suites that overlook the nearby dunes and plateaus. Each suite includes its own courtyard or terrace, ideal for witnessing the desert sunset, while the bathrooms are equipped with dual rain showers and soaking tubs that offer views of the surrounding scenery.

Located a brief distance from the property is the all-inclusive retreat Camp Sarika by Amangiri, which features a communal area that includes a restaurant, lounge, swimming pool, Jacuzzi, and two spa suites, as well as canvas-roofed tented pavilions.

In addition to providing a tranquil environment within the hotel, Amangiri presents a variety of outdoor activities, including horseback riding, rock climbing, hot-air ballooning, helicopter tours, and boating on Lake Powell.

Meadowood

Napa Valley, California

Napa Valley is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, prestigious wines, and exceptional cuisine, all of which are beautifully integrated at Meadowood Napa Valley. Nestled in a tranquil location in the delightful St. Helena, Meadowood spans 250 acres of countryside and features a highly regarded spa, three separate pool areas, and a distinctive chance to engage with the world of wine. Enjoy the natural beauty of the area from Meadowood’s collection of shingled cottages that are scattered throughout the stunning scenery.

This Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel embodies the elegance of wine country and understated luxury. Meadowood excels in its attention to detail: the friendly demeanor and engaging conversation of the bellman as he transports you to your accommodations in a golf cart. A personalized welcome note from the attentive hotel director greets you in your suite, along with a thoughtful gift from Napa Valley.

The Five-Star Meadowood Spa is the cherry on top of a wonderful vacation. Perched on a hillside overlooking the tennis courts, the facility resembles a wellness retreat situated in a contemporary lodge, rather than a conventional hotel spa. Each suite at the spa is generously sized and includes a private bathroom with a steam shower. The treatment

suites are designed to be both expansive and cozy, boasting high ceilings, a lounge area by the window, and a treatment bed centrally located within the room.

In 2020, the property unveiled three new swimming pools and an outdoor café, which includes an adults-only pool equipped with four cabanas, a fitness pool, and a family activities pool, alongside a full-service café that features a bar. Additionally, the upgraded fitness center now boasts new saunas and steam rooms, enhanced areas for classes, Peloton bikes, and various other amenities.

The accommodations at Meadowood range from studios to suites, each offering distinct charm and individuality. However, they all share a common feature: serene, opulent décor, a wood-burning fireplace, and breathtaking views.

Under the guidance of a distinguished group of renowned and published educators, The Wine Center at Meadowood Estate offers a unique opportunity to engage deeply with the culture of wine and explore the subtleties of wine and winemaking. Meadowood does carry a hefty price tag, but it will certainly deliver everything you want from your dream Napa Valley vacation.

Legacy & Light

The STory Behind Palm avenue Fine arT

Nestled in the heart of downtown Sarasota, Palm Avenue Fine Art stands as more than just a gallery—it’s a tribute to legacy, community, and the enduring power of great art.

Since its founding in 2014, the gallery has grown into one of the region’s most respected spaces for representational fine art. To understand what makes Palm Avenue Fine Art truly special, you need to start with the man behind it all—the late Robert Wilson. Robert wasn’t just a gallery owner; he was a presence. His voice had gravity, his charm was magnetic, and his passion for quality fine art set a tone that continues to define the gallery today.

Kasia Bruniany

Colin Thomsen, his godchild and successor, recalls Robert not only as a mentor but as family. “Robert had this incredible ability to make anyone feel seen,” Colin reflects. “He opened his first gallery in Nantucket in 1976 and became known for museum-level fine art. Even when he retired, he couldn’t stay away. I’ll never forget standing outside an empty storefront on Palm Avenue as a kid and hearing him say, ‘I’m opening another gallery.’”

That moment sparked the beginning of Palm Avenue Fine Art. From unpacking crates to hanging paintings, Colin was immersed in every step, unknowingly training under Robert’s careful eye. When Robert passed away suddenly in 2022, the loss was profound, but the foundation he built was strong. “This gallery was never just about him. It was always about community. Every day since has felt like a continuation of the legacy he started,” shared Colin.

Since taking the helm, the gallery’s direction under Colin has remained anchored in that legacy, while expanding into something even more dynamic. “My vision has been to make the gallery a community, not just a place to collect art, but a place to connect with it—to gather, to learn, to share the stories of the artists and the collectors who believe in their work,” explains Colin.

That philosophy is woven into every corner of Palm Avenue Fine Art. What sets the gallery apart isn’t just its roster of highly acclaimed painters,

Colin Thomsen

though that list includes giants like Joseph McGurl, Shane Couch, and EJ Paprocki. It’s the experience it offers. “We specialize in true master-level fine art,” says Colin. “These are not decorative works. These are museum-quality pieces by artists who have been at the top of their game for decades.”

But more than technique, it’s the human element that defines the gallery’s approach. According to Colin, “We build genuine, lasting relationships. Some of our collectors have watched me grow up in this space. We treat everyone who walks through the door like family.”

The gallery’s curatorial focus is both specific and broad: representational art grounded in classical technique with a contemporary edge. Artists must meet a gold standard—many boast accolades from the Art Renewal Center (ARC), Oil Painters of America (OPA), and other prestigious institutions. Yet, despite their elite status,

Painting by Joseph McGurl

their work resonates on a personal level. “Every piece must hold its own among the best. We look for work that’s technically exceptional and emotionally moving,” says Colin.

This careful selection results in a collection that while diverse in subject matter such as maritime scenes, landscapes, urban snapshots, and more, remains cohesive in tone and quality. Colin notes, “Even if one artist focuses on sailing and another on city life, there’s a unifying thread of craftsmanship and heart.”

One artist currently drawing much excitement is Shane Couch, known for his vivid maritime paintings. “Shane

paints from the perspective of being on the water. You can feel the energy in his work,” Colin says. Watching the racing yachts at the Cannes regatta and gathering reference material gave Colin the understanding and a deeper appreciation of Shane’s art and enhanced a collectors’ understanding of what makes it special.

Rotating exhibitions every two weeks during season ensures a constantly evolving experience for visitors. “It’s a lot of work,” Colin admits, “but it keeps things fresh and invites collectors to come back often.” Shows are thoughtfully curated, with artist visits and opening events that deepen the connection between the artwork and the community.

Education is also a key component. The team at Palm Avenue Fine Art walk collectors through the process including what makes a piece great, the story behind the artist. For seasoned collectors, it’s about going deeper, even commissioning original works. One standout story involves a longtime client commissioning EJ Paprocki to reinterpret a photograph taken by his daughter—a scene of umbrellas and yellow cabs on a rainy New York street. The result? A stunning, impressionist canvas that now hangs in his office beside the original photo on his computer making this commissioned piece a wonderful memory, a collaboration, and a tribute.

The gallery also plays an active role in Sarasota’s thriving art scene. Most recently, Palm Avenue Fine Art partnered with Creative Kids SRQ to host the Youth Art Walk, a celebration of young local talent right on

the avenue. “We’re proud to be part of this ecosystem,” shared Colin. “Sarasota is a city that values culture, and we want to contribute meaningfully to that.”

As for trends in the art world, the gallery is seeing a growing hunger for authenticity. “People want art that’s rooted in skill, story, and soul,” says Colin. “There’s a renewed appreciation for representational work. It’s not just about filling a wall—it’s about finding something that moves you.”

When asked if they have a favorite piece in the gallery, Colin smiles. “That’s the toughest question. I fall in love with different works every day. That’s the joy of it.” But the most rewarding part for Colin? “It’s the relationships. Seeing someone connect deeply with a piece, watching artists grow, and knowing we’re making a difference in how people experience art.”

Looking ahead, the vision is clear: to make Palm Avenue Fine Art not only a destination for collectors, but a cultural cornerstone in Sarasota. “I want to share these extraordinary artists with as many people as possible. Robert used to say, ‘Come and see the world as the masters do.’ That’s what we’re still doing. And I think he’s still with us—guiding the light, helping us grow.”

At Palm Avenue Fine Art, the legacy of one man continues to bloom into something bigger—a gallery not just of fine art, but of meaning, memory, and connection.

While the businesses provide the tools for personal wellbeing, it’s the community events that make Waterside Place truly come alive. Throughout the week—and throughout the year—residents and visitors can participate in a rotating schedule of activities that get people moving, socializing, and connecting with the outdoors.

One of the cornerstones of these events is the Lakewood Ranch Farmers’ Market, held every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Voted the number one farmers’ market in Florida, it features a vibrant lineup of vendors offering fresh produce, specialty goods, artisan products, and delicious prepared foods. The experience is enhanced by live music, children’s activities, and a friendly community atmosphere that makes every visit feel like a celebration.

Yoga in the Park has become a weekly favorite for many. Hosted in the beautiful 8-acre Waterside Park by Lakewood Ranch Community Activities, this all-levels yoga class takes place on Sunday mornings and is perfectly timed for a followup visit to the Farmers’ Market for healthy eats and local finds.

Looking ahead to 2026, Waterside Place will host the Lakewood Ranch Mindful Triathlon, an innovative community-wide event that blends physical movement with mindfulness. Unlike a traditional race, this triathlon will feature a 5K run followed by a group yoga flow and a guided meditation session. The focus is not on speed but on presence, making it a refreshing take on fitness events that align with the community’s holistic values.

On Wednesday evenings, Waterside Place transforms again with Sunset Volleyball. Hosted by Lakewood Ranch Community Activities, this series of roulette-style pickup games welcomes volleyball players of all skill levels. It’s a relaxed, social way to stay active while soaking in the sights of the setting sun over Kingfisher Lake.

Other engaging events include Pilates in the Park, a free, 50-minute totalbody mat workout hosted by BODYBAR Pilates. Open to all skill levels, the class is grounded in the BODYBAR method and offers a great entry point for newcomers or a deepening experience for seasoned practitioners. Sunset Stretch, hosted by Jazzercise Lakewood Ranch, introduces a unique blend of dance-based restorative movements. This gentle, flowing format focuses on dynamic and static stretching, helping participants improve mobility, stabilize joints, and achieve mental calm.

Building Bonds Through Movement

Beyond the structured classes and recurring events, Waterside Place has become a home base for new wellness-oriented social groups, such as LWR Girls Who Walk. Meeting Monday evenings at 5:30 p.m. in Waterside Park, this grassroots club for young women encourages new friendships while encouraging members to meet their step goals. It’s one of over 60 Community Activities Clubs coordinated by Lakewood Ranch Community Activities, a nonprofit that fosters connection and enrichment through organized groups, events, and recreational programs across the area.

These efforts represent the heartbeat of Waterside Place: bringing people together through shared wellness goals and offering authentic moments of connection through movement and mindful recreation.

Living the Good Life—Naturally

As wellness destinations continue to grow across the country, few places embody the concept as seamlessly as Waterside Place. Its unique fusion of nature, commerce, and community creates an environment where health is not an afterthought, but a way of life.

Whether you’re visiting for an hour or settling in for years, Waterside Place welcomes you with open arms, clean air, and an ever-expanding list of ways to feel your best. It’s more than a town center—it’s a reflection of what happens when a community is designed with intention, inspired by wellness, and driven by the simple joy of living well.

From active mornings to mindful evenings, Waterside Place proves that wellness isn’t a destination—it’s a lifestyle, and it starts right here.

Unique Custom Jewelry & Latest Trends

Staying on top of the latest trends is easy to do with custom jewelry, giving each piece a personalized touch that reflects your style and sets you apart from the crowd. Custom pieces allow you the freedom to bring your unique vision to life —if you can dream it, you can wear it. Whether you’re looking for a dazzling cocktail ring or a striking statement necklace, some well-known shops share the latest trends in custom designs and ready-to-wear pieces.

Gold & Diamond Source

goldanddiamond.com

Darrell Cox, Chief Custom Designer for Gold & Diamond Source, shares some of his favorite modern and luxurious designs that are sure to last a lifetime.

This stunning engagement ring, with its intricate and one-of-a-kind rose design and matching band, showcases the importance of connecting with a designer when customizing jewelry. Diamonds elevate any look from casual to formal, from day to night, with sophisticated and timeless elegance that will always turn heads. Custom diamond pieces can be tailored to your specific preferences, from the cut and color to the setting and design.

Warm-toned metals such as rose and yellow gold have made a comeback, offering an alternative to traditional platinum and white gold. Rose gold, also known as pink gold or red gold, boasts a romantic and feminine hue that complements a variety of skin tones, while yellow gold imparts a sense of luxury and sophistication to any piece. With traditional appeal and versatility, rose and yellow gold pieces have become a staple in many jewelry collections.

For pieces we no longer wear, Gold & Diamond Source recommends bringing them in and giving them new life. This swan pendant, utilizing two marquee-cut diamonds and smaller accent stones, is the perfect testament to reinventing something classic to something new. Designers’ working knowledge of the hottest design trends, like mixing metals and shapes, works for you to craft beautiful pieces so uniquely you that they never go out of style.

The art of layering is in right now, stacking a multitude of necklaces and bracelets in a beautiful assortment of color and material. This trend adds a modern twist to traditional jewelry designs, creating a dynamic and eye-catching look that’s perfect for making a style statement. From rose gold and silver to yellow gold and platinum, the possibilities are endless when it comes to mixing metals and layering pieces.

Colorful mixes of metals are not the only thing in right now! Brilliant gemstones of all colors, from ruby and sapphire to emerald green, have been leaving the space of accent stones and stepping into the spotlight. If diamonds are not your thing, this modern and colorful take on a center stone might be for you. While color stone engagement rings are popular right now, a touch of color can also highlight the craftsmanship of any pair of earrings or bracelet.

“From rose gold and silver to yellow gold and platinum, the possibilities are endless when it comes to mixing metals and layering pieces.”

Men’s jewelry has its own set of challenges in design when accounting for durability and style but can be as sentimental as any engagement ring. Take this custom design family crest ring with its recessed face—the stunning combination of white and yellow gold contrast to make the ribbon and last name stand out. This incredible piece, and any handcrafted piece, can be passed down as a family heirloom that defies trends and exceeds expectations.

optional art

Maureen Hoyt, owner of Optional Art, has been personally curating an incredible selection of modern jewelry in downtown Sarasota for over 45 years. Featured artists from all over the world are constantly pushing the boundaries of traditional design to showcase pieces that are ahead of the trends and truly unlike any other.

According to Maureen, simple designs are a thing of the past as modern jewelry embraces a variety of textures and shapes as well as a mix of metals and color. With the price of gold limiting younger artists, mixed and warm-toned metals, and a large variety of unusually cut semi-preciouscolored stones have really taken off. 18k gold and diamond collections are featured alongside pieces crafted from stainless steel and fused silver and gold.

Custom jewelry is always in style, and the interchangeable Vario collection allows clients to choose from classic and fashionforward chains, cords, and coils, with one-of-a-kind gemstones, diamonds, or Murano glass.

This Vario Clasp by Marcel Roelofs showcases the versatility of these unique customizable settings. Made from 18K yellow gold, Mex opal and Rutil and Hematite quartz, this piece is sure to be the most memorable in any room, from brunch on the beach to boardroom meetings.

With mixed metals and layering pieces as the hottest trend, the Moonstone Autus Set by C.H Mackellar captures modern beauty. The set of three oval twig bracelets features colorful blue moonstones with sparkling accent diamonds. The oxidized sterling silver top bracelet beautifully contrasts the 18K sterling silver bimetal and double blue moonstone of the center. The third features moonstone set in sterling silver on an oxidized bracelet round out the set.

Use of a variety of metals is not limited to just gold and silver, and this Pave Head Nail Bracelet by Pat Flynn embraces a distinctive look of texture and metal. Stark iron is shaped into a smooth oval bracelet that can complement any outfit. At the head of the piece, pave diamonds set in palladium white sit in a 18K yellow gold hinge.

McCarver & Moser

mccarvermoser.com | 1301 Main Street, Sarasota | 941.387.8000

The design experts at McCarver & Moser tell us the art of layering is taking center stage. With necklaces of varying lengths and designs being combined to create personalized statements, mixing metals, once considered a fashion faux pas, is now the go-to look. White, yellow, and rose gold can coexist harmoniously with a dainty chain or a bold pendant, or as a stack of chunky chains. Layering is the perfect way to showcase your personal style!

A favorite necklace at the store is a Pink Opal Pendant. The delicate gold chain holds a Pink Opal under a Sugarloaf White Topaz. The unique shape of the gemstones adds a touch of artistry, making this pendant a must-have accessory for any occasion.

A sparkle on the hand can captivate any eye, and the Pink Spinel ring is designed to charm with its elegance and sophistication. The intricate detailing of mixed metal and sparkling diamonds surrounding the center stone of this stunning unheated gemstone ring create a breathtaking visual that is perfect for any occasion.

The Chrysocolla drop earrings are indeed a work of art. The vibrant blue-green hues of the Chrysocolla stones are complemented perfectly by the sparkling diamonds that frame them. Reduce Mouth, Brain & Heart Plaque for Better Health

Plaque in the mouth consists of bacteria, viruses, one celled animals and parasites. Plaque in the brain and arteries can be the result of inflammation due to these invaders from the mouth. Plaque in the mouth can also be a drain on the body’s immune system.

Did you know that if your gums bleed it is like having an open wound in the mouth that is the size of your forearm? You’re unaware of it because it is painless, but understand it is like the German Autobahn highway, allowing germs and parasites a pathway into the body. If your scalp bleeds when you brush your hair, there is a problem. The same standard should be held when you brush your teeth.

There is a common bacterium in the mouth that is linked to an increased risk of stroke. As the bacterium travels through inflamed gums into the blood supply, it may cause arterial inflammation. This information was presented at the American Stroke Associations International Conference L.A. in 2025. They found in a 25-year test that “people that flossed had a 22% lower risk of brain strokes, a 44% lower risk of stroke from blood clots to the heart, a 12% lower risk of AFib. Oral health behaviors are linked to inflammation and artery hardening.” They also found that strep mutans found in the mouth were associated with a higher risk

of bleeding inside the brain. Strep anginosus found in the mouth and gut is associated with strokes and a higher risk of death.

Dr. Shuichi Tonomura of the National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center in Osaka, Japan says, “Reducing these bacteria from the mouth will be a reasonable strategy to help prevent their migration to the gut and help prevent stroke.” We also see an increased risk of losing an implant by certain strains of bacteria in the mouth. Most people do not know that implants can be lost by gum disease.

It is important learn which types of bacterial colonies are living in your mouth. A simple microscopic slide can give us information quickly. Saliva tests become more specific and show the bacteria associated with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, heart attack and stroke, adverse pregnancy outcomes, cancers and diabetes to name the major diseases.

According to the American Academy of Oral Systemic Health (AAOSH), 80% of American adults over 35 have some form of gum disease. Up to 50% of heart attacks and strokes are triggered by oral pathogens. (Source: Circulation 2013). After a routine dental cleaning, bacteria colonize under the gumline over the next

14 days, shifting to more virulent strains if they are not removed through home care. These strains of bacteria are linked to dementia, diabetes, heart disease, and increase the risk of systemic whole-body inflammation.

At World Class Dentistry, we want to do more than clean and care for your teeth.

Our saliva testing shows us that if certain oral pathogens are present, it could indicate a significant risk of heart and lung disease, stroke, colon cancer, obesity, heart attacks, dementia and Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and highrisk pregnancy.

We are looking for the five bacterial pathogens that are responsible for infection, inflammation, oral cavity problems, and systemic diseases. They are: Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa), Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), Treponema denticola (Td), Tannerella forythia (Tf), and Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn). Each one may be a leading cause of heart, brain, low-weight births, and inflammatory diseases.

We can easily find out which bacterial pathogens your mouth has in a routine 1-hour dental appointment with our hygienists.

Here’s what we do:

1. A microscopic sample is taken to see what types of bacteria, parasites, and one cell animals are living in the plaque to assess the risk level for disease. This slide can show us the types of bacteria that have colonized in the mouth and their association with heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, kidney disease, multiple sclerosis, coronary artery plaque, myocardial infarction, diabetes, preterm births, and colorectal cancer to name the major diseases.

2. If our patient has heart disease, diabetes, cancer or other systemic diseases and have high risk bacteria in their microscopic slide, we send out their saliva test to a lab for more specific disease-causing pathogen diagnosis.

3. We stain the bacteria colonies living on the teeth and show the patient where they need to concentrate brushing and flossing. We can tell how mature the bacterial colony is (the older the colony, the more destructive to the body). The frequency of intervention with homecare and periodic disruption of the biofilm at the dental office, is calculated by the type of bacteria and differentiated for the low risk, medium risk, and high-risk parameters.

“The mouth is the gateway to your overall health.”

4. We then remove the bacterial colonies(biofilm) on the surface of the mouth, teeth, and under the gums with air polishers.

5. Ozone water is flowing through the equipment to kill all microbes on contact.

6. We then remove any hard deposits with an ultrasonic tip.

7. Finally, we finish with laser treatment under the gums to vaporize the bacteria that are living in the gums. This is a painless process and allows healing.

8. We intercept at the appropriate interval for each patient according to the health risk and type of bacteria found with the microscope. These dental visits with the hygienist could be every 6 weeks, 2 months, 3 months or 6 months until we achieve a healthy microscopic slide. Success also depends on the home care of our patient.

9. How often our patients intercept the formation of the oral biome is critical. We recommend an ozone generating water pick, floss, and electric tooth brush used effectively daily. Many people may brush and floss, but they aren’t removing plaque because they don’t know how to do it effectively. We teach them and show them.

The mouth is the gateway to your overall health. Working with our patients, we have found a simple and painless method for lowering the risk of disease.

More Than a Botanical Garden

Sustainability and Lifelong Learning at SELBY GARDENS

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is redefining what it means to be a botanical garden in the modern world. From immersive educational programs to innovative sustainability initiatives, there is always something new to discover when you visit this evergreen and ever-evolving cornerstone of Sarasota.

Phase One of Selby Gardens’ three-phase Master Plan for its Downtown Sarasota campus opened to the public in January 2024, making it the world’s first net-positive energy botanical garden complex.

Leveraging Longevity at the LEAF

The Living Energy Access Facility (LEAF) houses shaded parking, a garden to plate restaurant, a gift and garden shop, and a nearly 50,000 square foot solar array. The LEAF generates more energy than it consumes and powers the first phase of the reimagined campus, which includes new facilities and amenities such as the Welcome Center and the Plant Research Center where Tracy Calla, Director of Education, works. Tracy stated, “We are running on solar power now, part of a larger vision to make Selby a leading example of sustainable infrastructure.”

That same year, TIME magazine took notice, naming Selby Gardens one of the “World’s Greatest Places.” Tracy notes, “We were the only botanical garden mentioned on their list, and that is a notable accomplishment for us.”

More recently, Travel + Leisure recognized Selby Gardens as a “Global Vision Award Honoree” for its leadership in sustainability. In 2025, Selby Gardens is setting a global standard—where architecture, education, and environmentalism come together to shape a greener future.

Holistic Wellness for a More Conscious Community

While Selby’s award-winning architecture and infrastructure showcase environmental sustainability, Tracy Calla, Director of Education, emphasizes that true sustainability also includes the well-being of the community. “It’s a holistic union of programming and place,” she says, “a complete package.”

Selby Gardens continues to expand its educational programming to support cognitive, psychological, and physical health. “All of those things are supported by time in nature,” Tracy explains. “Being healthy and well is part of sustainable living too.”

From hands-on family activities and after-school programs to adult workshops, garden tours, and lectures, Selby invites people of all ages to connect with the natural world—and with each other—in meaningful, restorative ways.

However, Tracy notes that plenty of people still find certain aspects of nature unfamiliar. “For some, stepping outside can feel like a big leap,” she says. “That’s why we offer self-guided learning experiences. Visitors can explore on their own terms, at their own pace, and with supplemental learning materials that help them feel connected to nature without feeling lost or overwhelmed.”

Remembering Nature as our Greatest Teacher

Through programs like Nibbles in Nature, families are introduced to local produce, learning about the biology behind growing food while enjoying delicious, freshly made snacks. “Last month we focused on blueberries and strawberries,” Tracy shares. “We made jam and

talked about the science of growing fruit. And, of course, everyone loved the snacks.”

For younger generations, Selby’s summer camps, held in June, are a huge hit. Covering environmentally conscious themes—from STEM challenges to coastal ecology— children engage in hands-on, nature-based learning. “We host approximately 30 children a week for our summer camps. This summer, one week is all about biomimicry, with engineering challenges, and another week we’ll go dip-netting in the bay and learn about seagrass and mangroves.”

“School field trips happen almost every day, and we also host tours for adult groups like clubs and neighborhood associations. It’s all part of our mission to share knowledge and bring people closer to nature,” she adds.

But learning doesn’t stop with the children. Selby also offers a wide range of adult classes and workshops that make nature-based learning fun and accessible for all ages. “Classes such as Kokedama (a Japanese-inspired moss plant art form), repotting orchids, and watercolor painting are just some of the adult classes we offer,” says Tracy. “A class here is an opportunity to learn new things, but also to have fun like a kid again. And the adults love it!”

A Living Sanctuary for Messy Minds and Busy Bodies

For those seeking refuge from the fast pace of modern life, Selby offers a variety of programs designed to help visitors reconnect with themselves and find much-needed tranquility in nature. Through practices like Yoga Nidra and crystal bowl sound baths, participants are invited to slow down and ground into the present moment. “If you’re not familiar with Yoga Nidra, it’s not challenging poses. It’s just lying down under a tree, being guided through visualizations,” says Tracy, “and it’s incredibly relaxing.”

Additionally, forest-bathing walks and nature-inspired writing sessions encourage even deeper meditative experiences. Reflecting on the last writing session she led, Tracy notes, “class participants wrote some beautiful prose and incredible poetry. They found inspiration in everything—from the fragrant plumerias to the grassy lawn, to the birds and the breeze.”

A recent forest bathing walk at the Historic Spanish Point campus for Earth Day, centered on mindfulness in nature, provided participants with the opportunity to let their attention naturally drift toward any sensory cues they wished to explore. As Tracy explains, “Time in nature allows us to soften our focus and simply enjoy being out there, being in our bodies, and being in the world.”

Expanding Access through Mirrored Programming

Selby Gardens offers a variety of programs across its Sarasota and Spanish Point campuses, with some tailored to each location’s unique features. As a South County resident, Tracy understands firsthand the importance of offering mirrored programs to ensure accessibility for the entire Sarasota-Manatee region. “It’s important to me that people in South County have the same access to our programs as those in Downtown Sarasota.”

For example, Selby’s school field trips focused on life cycles, are offered at both locations. At the downtown campus, students can explore the butterfly garden and learn about the life cycle of caterpillars and plants, while at Spanish Point, the experience is elevated with the addition of a butterfly house. “The students get a closeup, personal experience with dozens of butterflies, and many even have the chance to interact with them,” Tracy says. “It’s a magical experience that helps kids, especially those less familiar with nature, become more comfortable in the outdoors.”

Spanish Point also enhances programs that dive into local history and ecology. For instance, the Native Plants

and Ethnobotany program takes advantage of the site’s rich historical backdrop. “At Spanish Point, we can tie in local history, from early Native American shell mounds to the homesteads of pioneering families like the Webbs to influential figures like Bertha Palmer,” Tracy notes. “It offers a deeper understanding of this area’s history and how we are part of its ongoing story.”

So, while both locations share core programming, Spanish Point’s natural and historical offerings allow for more specialized learning experiences that connect visitors with both nature and history in meaningful ways.

A Vision for the Future

Looking toward the future, Selby Gardens has ambitious plans for expanding its educational outreach, particularly through therapeutic horticulture and programs that engage younger generations. One of the most exciting developments is the launch of The Environmentors program in the 2025-2026 school year, a mentorship initiative aimed at empowering local high school students to address pressing sustainability challenges. “We want to inspire the next generation to take meaningful action on environmental issues in our community,” Tracy explains. “This program will connect young people with real-world sustainability solutions and equip them with the tools they need to make a difference.”

At its core, Selby Gardens is not just about preserving plant life—it’s about fostering a deeper connection to the natural world and to one another. By engaging with the environment in meaningful ways, visitors and participants alike develop a profound sense of stewardship for the planet, ensuring that Selby’s mission continues to have a far-reaching impact for generations to come.
