from the • publisher As we begin a new year, many of us start with professional, personal and/ or health goals which usually don’t make it past the first three months. Well, at least we have good intentions! But starting a new year always does make me think more about two vital elements of our life—our health and wellbeing, which is the theme of this issue. For me, the last few years have been a been a bit challenging health-wise, so I am determined to make 2026 a much healthier and calmer year. So just how well are we doing as a community when it comes to our health and wellbeing? If I had to give it a grade, I would give it an A-. Why not A+ you ask? Because nothing is perfect, and I must leave a bit of room for improvement! Let’s start with our cover story—the 100th anniversary of Sarasota Memorial Hospital. From its humble beginning with a 32-bed facility in 1925 to a health care superpower with 2,500 physicians and advanced practice providers across its network of care, Sarasota Memorial Health Care System is recognized as a top tier hospital system in Florida and nationally. Its growth and breadth of care ensure we have every treatment we would need right here in Sarasota without leaving town. We are very blessed indeed with a great hospital system! As a hospital patient a few times in recent years, I can personally attest to the quality of care and treatment I received at the hands of top-notch physicians, nurses and other staff. I know my care would not have been better anywhere else. Sarasota Memorial Healthcare System could not provide such great care without the work of Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation, which is powered by the generosity of many local people. In my humble opinion, the foundation is probably the most important nonprofit in our community since our good health and quality of our care is the most important bedrock of our life. Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation is also celebrating a milestone this year—its 50th. I encourage you to read more about the foundation, its impact, and how to get involved in this issue. A vitally important member of a good healthcare team are of course the nurses. These “Florence Nightingales” play an important role in our care educating patients, advocating for the vulnerable and coordinating care. They are the backbone of the healthcare industry. Right here in Sarasota/Manatee, State College of Florida is leading the way in graduating many of the finest nurses anywhere. Under Dean of Nursing Dr. Tammy Sawmelle, its nursing program is among the best of the best and maintains one of the highest certification rates in our state. Learn more in this issue.

All of us have experienced the loss of a loved one. Sometimes the grief can be overwhelming. Thankfully, we have a local nonprofit doing incredible work for not only those in the last months or days of their life, but also for those they leave behind. Tidewell Foundation, led by its president, Delesa Morris, provides philanthropic support for programs and services for both Tidewell hospice patients and those suffering loss. The foundation needs local support, and you can learn more how to help in this issue. This month, a very important gala will take place—Sunshine from Darkness’ Inspiring Hope Dinner. If you are not familiar with Sunshine from Darkness, it has had a significant impact on mental health wellness through its innovative programming and advocacy. Led by Sarasotan Jeff Peterson who has carried on the legacy of his parents (the late Lee and Bob Peterson), the organization has touched many lives, and it hopes to spark lasting change. Jeff is interviewed in this issue in our Around Town feature where you can learn more about the organization and the gala. Gulf Coast Community Foundation, ranked in the top 100 of all community foundations in the country, has recently added three powerhouse women to its board of directors. Each woman has remarkable experience and talent, and they have already made an indelible mark on our community. Please read about all three ladies in Tom Reese’s article.

Alma de España, which translates to the soul of Spain, is Sarasota’s own salute to authentic Spanish cuisine, serving traditional flavors with modern innovation and technique. Chef Elier Rodriguez, owner and Michelin-mention recipient, brings his lifelong passion for culinary excellence to your table, celebrating his Spanish heritage with every dish. Born and raised in Cuba, Elier’s first classroom was his grandmother’s kitchen. Her guidance taught him more than the right way to caramelize vegetables and roll empanadas, but how to season each plate with the soul and culture of his community. At 19, Elier’s journey brought him to the United States, where he enrolled at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Atlanta. After graduation, Elier’s resume filled with prestigious restaurants across the country, from the Ritz-Carlton Atlanta to the Fontainebleau in Miami Beach. He honed his Spanish culinary skills at two-Michelin-star restaurant Picasso Las Vegas before stepping into the world of French cuisine at Le Cirque Las Vegas. In Washington D.C., Elier assisted in opening Del Mar, as well as Dolce Vita. His time in California contributed to the success of Petrossian West Hollywood and Loquita in Santa Barbara. The first three months of gala season have been extraordinary. There were more events in the past three months than ever before, and I have to say that most organizations have truly raised the bar. We’re seeing event programs that highlight community outreach, signature artistic missions, and ambitious initiatives rather than centering the evening around long live auctions and extended paddle raises. Take the West Coast Black Theatre Troupe Gala, which limited its fundraising segment to just fifteen minutes before moving straight into the performance. The Sarasota Orchestra luncheon, which never includes paddle raising, continued its tradition of surpassing table donation goals while showcasing outstanding youth performances. Even Women in Philanthropy’s “Downton Abbey Soirée” featured only a single auction item and instead focused on pure fun. Sarasota is an extraordinarily generous community, but paddle raising is starting to feel a bit tired, especially when it serves as the backbone of an evening’s program. There are only so many times one can be the “final $100 paddle” for a prize before the season’s charm begins to wear thin. The challenge now is for organizations to be more creative and innovative, especially as ticket prices rise and competition for guests becomes increasingly fierce. The Florida Center for Early Childhood executed this with wonderful balance—profiling two clients, introducing them warmly to the audience, fundraising, and then moving everyone to the dance floor with an absolutely fantastic band. The Sarasota Opera Guild’s Poinsettia Luncheon leaned into tradition with a silent auction and a mystery bottle raffle but

elevated the experience with spirited characters at the booth and guild members who became wonderful ambassadors as guests circulated. We had so much fun. It just goes to show that with a little extra effort, an event can rise to the next level. I know—truly—that an enormous amount of work goes into planning these gatherings. But perhaps a touch of magic stardust (and a little less “business”) could make the evening even more memorable. For one nine-day stretch in early November, I was fed by Michael’s On East seven times—at Michael’s Ballroom, Selby Gardens, The Ora, and SMH. They do an exceptional job, and throughout the rest of the month I enjoyed meals from three other caterers who also delivered beautifully. A special shout-out to Michael—it took nine dinners and lunches before I had the same dessert twice. The quality at these events is consistently superb. Still, one table topic seems to be gaining traction—food waste. How fortunate we are to be served such abundance when food security is a growing concern, and Sarasota is not immune. I’ve noticed a small but increasing number of people asking for boxes. Most pack up their entrée, some even their salad, though those who do are usually still happy to enjoy dessert. Perhaps it’s time to consider a branded take-home kit for gala guests. A nod to Asolo Rep’s appropriate and reusable sippy cup. It’s a simple gesture that could help us be more mindful while extending the life of a wonderful meal. Next issue I will share my experiences at several January galas. I hope to inspire new people to attend!

The SMH 2016 Physician of the Year, Past President of Sarasota County Medical Society; Past President of Shulman the Florida State Society of Plastic When Dr. Alissa was about 13 years old, Surgeons she witnessed a plastic surgery in progress and was mesmerized. She later took these skills into her adulthood, obtaining dual degrees in anatomy and fine arts (sculpture). Today, she’s the first woman named Chief of Surgery at Sarasota Memorial, and 2016 Sarasota Memorial Hospital Physician of the Year, as well as the owner of Sovereign Plastic Surgery in Sarasota, combining her sculpture and medical expertise. “Sculpting changes the way something looks from all three dimensions,” she said. “As a plastic surgeon, that’s what I’m doing.”

PROGRESS Gulf Coast Community Foundation Welcomes Three Accomplished Women to its Board of Directors BY TOM R EESE
As any strong community foundation would do, Gulf Coast Community Foundation is consistently looking for ways to ensure even greater community impact, increase its partnership network, listen to fresh perspectives, and meet challenging philanthropic goals. With these goals and its mission in mind, Gulf Coast has recently appointed three exceptional and highly distinguished women to its board of directors who will all contribute in a large way to the foundation’s incredible impact in our region for today and tomorrow. Deb Kabinoff Deb worked tirelessly to launch and build two successful software and technology companies throughout her career. Described as a trailblazer by her peers, she retired in Sarasota in the early 1990s after selling one of her companies at the age of 42. Although technically retired, Deb dove headfirst into the world of philanthropy and has never slowed down. “When I moved here from California, I immediately got involved in philanthropy and many nonprofit organizations. As a Jewish woman, I felt a responsibility through the tradition of ‘tikkun olam’ to give back to my community and heal the world for the privilege of
having been given this life. I started out volunteering with and contributing to arts organizations, Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Selby Gardens, and several other nonprofit groups,” said Deb. Deb and her late husband, Larry, realized there was a serious affordable housing crisis in Sarasota county and immediately got to work to remedy the situation, eventually launching a new company to build amenitypacked affordable houses in North Port. “I was happy to be building a lot of houses and helping various charities, but I wanted to make a bigger overall impact on the community in a more strategic way. I wanted to work with an organization that would add to my ability to make a significant contribution in our area. I learned about Gulf Coast and the ways they were addressing the needs of our region, and I knew that it was the organization I had been looking for.” Deb began by opening her own donor-advised fund through Gulf Coast. “Because my career was based on starting and building software companies, I’m especially interested in participating in projects that use technology to JANUARY 2026 | SARASOTA SCENE

solve problems. Gulf Coast helped me find the most meaningful opportunities in our area that aligned with causes I care about. Gulf Coast believes in bold and proactive philanthropy, and I’m always looking to push the envelope to get things done.” The team at Gulf Coast invited Deb to serve on its board in early 2025. ”I was honored to be asked to join the board because Gulf Coast is the heart of philanthropy across our community. Gulf Coast and our donors have invested more than $625 million in our region.” As a board member, Deb will continue her philanthropic impact through an even more prominent role—helping to steer Gulf Coast’s priorities now and in the future. “Gulf Coast values collaboration. We know that true transformation can only come from working together with our donors, advisors, nonprofit partners, and the community as a whole. I look forward to helping lead this effort.” Elizabeth Moore Gulf Coast has always been deeply rooted in environmental causes and conservationism, so it was a no-brainer to ask the legendary Elizabeth Moore to join its board of directors.

After spending much of her life in the Boston area, Elizabeth and her family initially moved to Bradenton in 2008 before ultimately settling in Sarasota. Upon realizing the power of collective and organized philanthropy, Elizabeth quickly got to work with various organizations in the area, including Gulf Coast. “My observation about the world of philanthropy is that while a lot of funding goes to worthy causes like the arts, hospitals, or human services, not enough is done when it comes to natural resources, land conservation, water quality, and the environment. Those kinds of resources really represent the foundation of human existence and the world we share with so many other species,” said Elizabeth. In 2016, Elizabeth purchased Triangle Ranch 1,143 acres in Myakka with the assistance of Big Waters Land Trust (formerly Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast), where she also serves on the board of directors. The land where Triangle Ranch sits is right next to Myakka State Park. This acquisition established a vital conservation easement to preserve its legacy as open space and wetlands, as well as wildlife habitats. She also hosts many fundraising and educational events for environmental groups and causes. Elizabeth’s reputation and long-standing work with organizations such as Selby Gardens, Big Waters Land Trust, TREE Foundation, Mote Marine Laboratory &
Aquarium, and others have made her a prominent philanthropist known locally and around the country.
she made Sarasota her home after buying a house on Siesta Key.
“My goal as a board member is to expand upon the mission of Gulf Coast and increase the support for environmental causes in our area. I’m very ambitious and excited to work on potential new projects and network with other environmental leaders in the community.”
“Over the last five years my academic work in universities shifted more toward virtual and remote work, which allowed me to learn about Gulf Coast. I was already involved in nonprofits and had a donoradvised fund with the organization before, but I got to know Phillip Lanham when he became president and CEO in 2023, and I subsequently became more involved with Gulf Coast.”
Elizabeth has made meaningful demonstrations of what she believes in by saving land from development, funding the Florida’s Water Gallery at the new Mote Science Education Aquarium, the International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration, and much more. “We are going to make an impact here. We can’t be everything to everybody, but the targets and missions we want to fund will make a meaningful impact on our region. I know I can influence other funders and donors to partner with Gulf Coast, and I hope to be an inspiring role model for the community.” Dr. Gail Morrison Morganroth Dr. Gail Morrison Morganroth passionately champions health equity, fueled by her mission and curiosity of how we can do more together as a community. Together with her husband, they are actively involved with the Selby Master Plan capital campaign committee, the Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation for research, and the Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee. As a board-certified nephrologist, Dr. Morrison Morganroth has played a key leadership role in academic medicine and philanthropy. “We live in a world where we must help people to live better. My husband and I are both physicians who worked in West Philadelphia and areas where many people unfortunately live in poverty. During my 48 years at the University of Pennsylvania, I created a program where physicians and students would physically go out into the community to meet patients at their home to see how they were living and what problems they had in order to serve them better,” said Gail. Gail first found herself in the Sarasota area when she and her family bought a condo on Lido Key in 2009. After spending years vacationing and living here seasonally,
Gulf Coast is always looking to add more diverse individuals to its board of directors, and Gail’s distinguished career in medicine brings an important and timely perspective to the foundation’s work. Her work and reputation from spending years with the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia created a unique opportunity to get more involved in healthcare initiatives in the community. “I took about a year and a half going to various Gulf Coast events and meetings to see how they performed as an outsider to get a good understanding of their goals, mission, and strategic planning. I really appreciated that they took such an organized and strategic approach toward philanthropy.” One of the most appealing aspects to Gail about Gulf Coast is how its philanthropic efforts are not just one and done. It is an ongoing effort with many people actively involved in the process to make sure funds are going to places and causes that need it most. As Gail enters a new chapter of her professional life, she hopes to use her skills and experience with Gulf Coast to make a meaningful impact on our community now and in the future.

Legendary philanthropists Lee and Bob Peterson founded the nonprofit organization Sunshine From Darkness in 1997 to raise funds for mental health research. After Bob’s passing in 2012, the organization remained inactive for six years. Their son, Jeff, re-ignited Sunshine from Darkness in 2018, carrying on his parents’ legacy to shine a bright light on mental health awareness and raise funds for vital programs and initiatives. The Petersons became passionate about supporting mental health research after a family member was diagnosed with a serious mental illness. The couple initially helped launch NARSAD (National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression) in 1987, which is now known as the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation. To date, over $470 million has been raised for mental illness research by the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation.
Since taking over and refreshing the organization in 2018 with the help of Executive Director Marlene M. Hauck and a small but mighty team, Sunshine From Darkness has launched several programs to make an impact on our region. One of these programs, called “Blue Door Services,” works to support children and families. Its goal is to teach skills in emotional literacy and mental health awareness to foster resilient coping strategies.
Through various initiatives and fundraising events over the last several years, Sunshine from Darkness, which operates as a subsidiary of the Lee and Bob Peterson Foundation, has raised substantial funds for local organizations and programs working in the mental health industry and has provided hope for a brighter future for those with mental illness.
In 2024, Sunshine From Darkness launched a pilot program comprising Youth Resiliency Coping Skills Workshops; SFD collaborated with the Boys & Girls Clubs to embed the workshops into their summer camp. Building on the program’s achievements, the organization extended its Youth Resiliency Coping Skills program across Sarasota County in 2025, collaborating with other nonprofit organizations, to emphasize age-appropriate mentorship and mental wellness education.
“After watching a close family member fall victim to mental illness, my parents were not the kind of people to sit back and stay on the sidelines,” said Jeff. “They were very excited to try and do something to help, but there weren’t a lot of opportunities or organizations around until NARSAD started in 1987 in New York. When they moved to Florida, they wanted to continue raising money and supporting the cause, and that’s how Sunshine From Darkness was born.”
Every year, Sunshine From Darkness hosts an event called “Step Into the Light: A Mental Health Summit.” This event is open to the public and is intended to empower individuals by equipping them with new coping mechanisms, lowering stigma, and enhancing mental health wellness. For 50 years, local philanthropy to Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation has enabled Sarasota Memorial Healthcare System to become a nationally recognized leader in healthcare, technology, research, and world-class patient care. For Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation’s Vice President of Strategic Philanthropy, Patrick McQuillan, the past year has been one of growth and acceleration. Stepping into the vice president role just over a year ago, he began leading a development team that may be modest in size but delivers results on an impressive scale. Under his guidance, Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation has set fundraising records and pushed forward major initiatives that enhance the quality of care across the region. McQuillan is no stranger to healthcare philanthropy. His work spans more than eight years with the Healthcare Foundation, and previously as Director of Development for NCH Healthcare System in Naples. His professional progression feels natural. “For the first time, patients will be able to get nearly everything they need in one place without having to leave the community,” McQuillan says. “It’s comprehensive, coordinated care connected to one of the best hospitals in the country.” The pavilion consolidates treatment, clinical trials, surgery, radiation therapy, diagnostics, and support care on the Sarasota campus. It removes logistical hardship from what is often the hardest chapter in a person’s life. During construction, the space became more than just a building. Donors, hospital staff, and caregivers wrote personal messages on the concrete—

signatures of hope, remembrance, support, and gratitude. McQuillan describes the moment as a powerful reminder of who the hospital truly belongs to. “It showed how personal this place is to people,” he says. “Those messages reflected the heart of the community.” Inside, the pavilion was designed to reflect that same compassion. Bright, calm spaces and thoughtful architecture shape an environment that feels comforting and intentional. “You can feel the empathy behind every detail,” McQuillan says. Innovation at the Kolschowsky Research and Education Institute Another major advancement arrived earlier this year with the opening of the Kolschowsky Research and Education Institute. The facility brings research, clinical trials, and training together in one modern setting—creating a direct bridge between innovation and the bedside. “Research activity and clinical trials have skyrocketed since the building opened,” McQuillan notes. Supporting Mothers and Families Two more programs illustrate how philanthropy strengthens care where it matters most: the Pregnancy Care Team and First 1,000 Days Suncoast. With a nationwide OB (Obstetrics) shortage, Sarasota Memorial created a team-based model that ensures all expecting mothers receive coordinated care throughout the pregnancy and delivery process. It’s personal, comprehensive, and designed to prevent gaps in care. The First 1,000 Days program continues that support beyond childbirth. The first thousand days—from pregnancy to age two—are considered some of the 66

1925
Sarasota Hospital opens November 2, 1925, on Hawthorne Street with 32 beds and 12 physicians. It cost $40,000. One of the few registered nurses in Sarasota, Ruth Wilhelm serves as its first superintendent, providing aroundthe-clock patient care, as well as preparing meals and washing laundry. Superintendent nurses would essentially run the hospital for the first 15 years of its operation.
1933
Voters approve a major hospital expansion. The hospital now has approximately 100 beds, a nurses’ home, an operating room, a garage, and an annex to accommodate patient overflow. Private citizens furnish patient rooms and wards in memory of loved ones.
1945
Post-war population booms spur calls for hospital expansion and an outpouring of donations from the community fuels rapid growth, including a new surgical suite, enlarged garage, kitchen and dining room, a concrete block wing and the hospital’s first air-conditioning unit. A citywide effort begins to raise money for a war “Memorial” hospital.

On Sunday, October 16, Sarasota Municipal Hospital is renamed Sarasota Memorial Hospital in honor of World War I and World War II veterans. It opens with a capacity of 255 beds and is one of the few fully air-conditioned hospitals in the South.
1967
With support from the county, Sarasota Memorial Hospital doubles in size, with major expansions including 14 operating rooms, a 26-bed recovery room, a 48-bed ICU, a clinical laboratory, and a new X-ray department. The hospital board applies for helicopter landing space.
1974
Sarasota Memorial is one of the first general hospitals to establish a Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, supported by ongoing donations from the Sudakoff family. SMH would add a Cardiac Cath Lab and Cardiac Rehabilitation Program toward the end of the decade.
1986
The inpatient oncology unit opens and, a year later, Sarasota Memorial purchases its first MRI. At the time, it is the most expensive piece of equipment purchased by the hospital at $2.6 million.
1999
SMH is one of the first hospitals in the nation to utilize minimally invasive robotic technology, including Zeus, the precursor to the da Vinci robots of today.
2007
The Institute for Advanced Medicine opens, offering outpatient services and the latest in the field of neuroscience. The new outpatient center on Clark Road offers an array of wellness programs, including HealthFit, the area’s first medically-oriented fitness center.
2013
The Courtyard Tower opens with Cardiac and Orthopedic Units, an expanded Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and state-of-the-art Labor & Delivery and Mother-Baby suites. Sarasota Memorial unveils four integrated operating rooms dedicated to minimally invasive and women’s surgery.
2021

the Path Advancing Nursing Education and Community Care By Tom Reese
At State College of Florida, Manatee–Sarasota (SCF), nursing education is about more than earning a degree. It is about answering a calling and meeting a critical community need. SCF’s nursing programs continue to evolve to meet the growing demand for skilled, compassionate health care professionals, while achieving some of the highest pass rates in Florida on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN), a nationally recognized and rigorous exam. Just as important, the vast majority of graduates remain in the Sarasota–Manatee region, providing care close to home. SCF’s Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) program blends rigorous academics with hands-on clinical experience in local health care facilities throughout Manatee and Sarasota counties. Offered in both English and Spanish, with flexible scheduling options including evenings and weekends, the program is designed for students balancing work, family, and the demands of nursing education. Classroom instruction, simulation labs, and supervised clinical practice work together to prepare graduates for real-world patient care. Students may enter the ASN program through a traditional pathway or an accelerated transition option for Licensed Practical Nurses. Upon completion, graduates are prepared to sit for the NCLEX-RN and begin professional practice as registered nurses. Their success reflects strong academic standards, dedicated faculty, and a program designed to prepare students not only to pass an exam, but to care for patients with confidence and compassion. In 2010, SCF expanded its nursing mission by launching the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. Designed for working registered nurses, the BSN program is available online and focuses on leadership, population health, informatics, research, and evidence-based practice. to ensure graduates are prepared to lead in today’s complex health care environment. Since joining SCF as Dean of Nursing in 2020, Dr. Tammy Sawmelle has worked to ensure student success from admission through graduation. Within six months of completing the ASN program, 100 percent of SCF graduates are either employed as nurses or enrolled full time in a BSN program. This outcome reflects a rigorous admissions process, strong academic standards, and a deep commitment to preparing students for longterm success. Students train in SCF’s state-of-the-art simulation centers, where advanced technology allows them to practice clinical decision-making and patient safety in a controlled environment before caring for real patients. This preparation builds confidence, competence, and compassion. 74

One such graduate is Blondine, a trilingual nurse who completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing while balancing work, family responsibilities, and years of personal challenges. She often studied late into the night after caring for her children and working long shifts in health care. “I completed many of my assignments at two o’clock in the morning,” Blondine shared. “What kept me going was my desire to move forward, the support of my family, and faculty who never gave up on me.” Her story mirrors those of many SCF nursing students. They are parents, caregivers, first-generation college students, and adult learners who persist because they believe in the power of education and service. When board-certified anesthesiologist Dr. Steven Reichbach moved to Florida from New York nine years ago, he’d been working for decades at the largest private practice anesthesiology group in the country. Though he enjoyed what he did, he was considering a different focus in medicine—treatment for chronic pain, depression, PTSD, and addiction. Dr. Reichbach was intrigued by research surfacing about long-term pain and mental health treatment with a common anesthetic drug, ketamine. He was very familiar with this drug, as he had been using it in his practice since 1991. “One of my former partners had opened up an office providing IV ketamine infusions for mental health disorders,” he said. “So, I spoke with him and realized I could use my knowledge and experience with ketamine in a different way, outside of the operating room.” Not long after, Dr. Reichbach opened Reichbach Center on University Parkway in Sarasota. Initially, 90% to 95% of Dr. Reichbach’s patients were selfreferred. Many felt their psychiatrist wouldn’t approve of their ketamine treatments. Today, around 70% of his patients are referrals from therapists and psychiatrists. He attributes this change to more knowledge about ketamine in the media, as well as psychiatrists and therapists seeing results from their patients firsthand. Dr. Reichbach has extended his practice by introducing an IV lounge and medical cannabis evaluations. The MedBar IV Lounge offers revitalization for many needs via vitamin IV therapy. In response to patients’ demands
and recognizing their needs, he uses medical cannabis as an option for sleep and anxiety issues and pain disorders not treated with ketamine therapy. With such a high demand for his services, Reichbach Center is growing fast, and the future is promising as many people are looking for better solutions to heal from their chronic pain while also overcoming conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, and even alcohol addiction. “The most rewarding thing is when a patient tells me they feel like their old self again. That is why the Tidewell Foundation’s mission is to brighten lives—ensuring that every patient, family, and community member has access to the support they need regardless of their financial position. As the philanthropic arm of Empath Health, the nation’s largest non-profit hospice healthcare system, Tidewell Foundation services 22 counties in Florida alone. While many Sarasota, Manatee, DeSoto, and Charlotte county

residents recognize the Tidewell name for its hospice services, far fewer realize the breadth of support Tidewell provides for overall health, wellness, and emotional resilience long before, during, and after end-of-life care. Thanks to the generosity of donors who share in the belief that no one should face serious illness, loss, or grief alone, Delesa Morris, President of Tidewell Foundation, proudly shares, “We can provide philanthropic support for programs and services that many patients cannot afford on their own.”
Programs & Services: More Than Hospice “Our work goes far beyond hospice care,” Morris emphasizes. “You don’t have to have had a hospice experience to utilize our services.” Tidewell offers a holistic range of evidence-based programs with each one aiming to enhance quality of life at every stage. There is specialized pediatric care, music and massage therapy, expressive arts, pet therapy, and a wide range of grief-support programs for people of all ages.

One of its most impactful programs is the Blue Butterfly Family Grief Program. Designed for children ages 5 to 18 who have lost a parent, sibling, caregiver, or loved one, it follows a thoughtful 10-month structure that coincides with the school year. Children are invited to gather in age-based groups while their caregivers meet separately, and then families meet monthly in group sessions to discuss the same themes, setting the tone for healing conversations to continue at home. Just last year, 329 children and 195 caregivers received support through Blue Butterfly across 10 local schools. Tidewell also provides individual therapy, school-based counseling, tailored services for those facing cardiac conditions or navigating emotional crises and for families in need, as well as emergency financial assistance. The Ripple Effect of Community Generosity Morris notes that many of Tidewell’s deeply impactful services are not covered by insurance. “Every veteran honored with a recognition ceremony, every family who receives holiday meals, and every child who walks into Blue Butterfly, is made possible because someone in the community chose to give of their time or financial means.”

“We couldn’t do our work without volunteers,” Morris adds, describing seemingly simple, yet meaningful, practical acts of kindness. Tidewell volunteers staff the Foundation’s retail stores, which generate sales that pour back into grants and funding for clinical teams. Every March, Tidewell hosts a Linens and Love Drive where people donate linens for patients who are cared for at their homes and may not already have them. Every Thanksgiving, there is also a Meal Drive for patients and families receiving hospice care.

Tidewell volunteers come wearing many different hats. Some create daily floral arrangements from Trader Joe’s donated flowers while others provide vigil support, so no one must die alone. Accessibility, Dignity, & Care For All Accessibility is one of the Foundation’s core values. “We ensure no one is turned away,” Morris assures. Whether they need counseling, medical support, pediatric grief services, or integrative therapies, the Foundation is committed to removing financial barriers so that every family can receive the care they deserve. This belief carries into newer programs as well, including Empath Health’s PACE Center in Bradenton, which provides all-inclusive care to medically fragile adults aged 55 and older, from medical services and meals to activities and transportation which helps them remain independent at home. The Foundation’s reach continually extends to honoring veterans as well, with a brand-new campaign launching in 2026 for a Veteran’s Memorial Garden in Lakewood Ranch. DRAMA, COMEDY & MYSTERY in 2026 By Scott Ferguson From contemporary stories to a classic British murder mystery, the next three plays in Asolo Rep’s 2025-26 season explore the themes of friendship, trust and suspicion. “I’m excited to introduce Sarasota audiences to three dynamic, hilarious, insightful and suspenseful plays this winter,” says Peter Rothstein, producing artistic director. “We’ve cast some of the finest actors in our industry to bring these stories to life.” Primary Trust (January 7-February 11) is the winner of the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Written by Eboni Booth and directed by Chari Arespachochaga, the production stars Asolo Rep newcomer Anthony Cason as Kenneth, a longtime bookstore employee who loses his job and must find a new life outside his comfort zone.

Cason says he’s a big fan of the play and has wanted to play the role of Kenneth since he first saw the New York production. “Kenneth’s life has been the same for about 20 years when we meet him at the start of this play,” says Cason. “He’s a bit lonely and isolated. He goes to the same restaurant six times a week, sits in the same booth and has the same drink. “Then suddenly, one new thing in his life happens. And then from that point on, there’s a constant flood of new things. We meet him when he’s at a crossroads and wondering how to move forward. What does it mean to start over in the middle of a life? Cason says the message of Primary Trust will resonate with Asolo Rep audiences. “People are going to find

things in this play they can really identify with — things they have said, felt or seen. It’s a very human and timely story. I think it speaks volumes.” The Mirror Crack’d (January 21-March 14) is a new adaptation of Agatha Christie’s 1962 novel, featuring her popular amateur detective, Miss Marple. The play, by Rachel Wagstaff, debuted in the U.K. in 2019. It was first staged in the U.S. in 2025 at Houston’s Alley Theatre. The plot centers on an aging American movie star who buys a British manor home with a plan to resurrect her career by shooting a movie in the area. When the quiet 1950s countryside is rocked by a murder, Miss Marple methodically studies clues and questions suspects to solve the crime. Asolo Rep’s production will be directed by Michael Donald Edwards, who served as the theater’s

Suzanne Grodner, who plays Christie’s legendary sleuth Miss Marple, has a long history with the organization, starting with her days as a student in the FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training MFA program in the early 1980s. She calls Edwards “one of my all-time favorite directors. We’ve worked together for 25 years; I was in a number of shows while he was the artistic director at Asolo Rep.” Grodner says playing the iconic character from the immensely popular novels and short stories is “very humbling and challenging. There’s a fine balance between doing a caricature of Miss Marple and creating the character from your own viewpoint. She’s an older woman who gets overlooked a lot. She’s very smart, she listens to people, and she doesn’t force herself into any situation. I really want to honor the history of that beloved character.”

Mark Benninghofen plays Jason Rudd, the husband of the movie star character in The Mirror Crack’d and the director of the movie being made in the story. He dazzled Asolo Rep audiences in 2024 with his portrayal of defense attorney Henry Drummond in Inherit the Wind, also directed by Rothstein. “Audiences love a ‘whodunit,’” Benninghofen says. “Since COVID, the country’s been so shook up and theaters have had to respond by figuring out what to do. These murder mysteries have become super popular. They’ve been a good way to pull people back into the theater.” Grodner agrees. “I think people are really looking for a diversion, something to work their brains, enlighten them and amuse them,” she says. “Murder mysteries are like puzzles, so they’re a great genre to bring to the theater right now. As the play unfolds, a British couple, Peter and Debbie, befriend Elsa, an American woman on a cruise. Later, when Elsa shows up at their home and invites herself to stay, they’re too polite to turn her away. The result is hilarious husband-wife debates about how to “unfriend” her without offending her. Sally Wingert, who portrays Elsa, appeared at Asolo Rep in Inherit the Wind and played Mrs. Lovett, the nefarious meat-pie baker, in Sweeney Todd (2019). Wingert describes Elsa as “charming, assertive and funny. There’s a reason people fall for her, as the couple does on the cruise.” “It’s hard to find a great new comedy,” says Wingert. “So I’m thrilled to be in this one. The characters are authentic and funny. The audience is going to relate to the story and see themselves and their family members in the characters.” Wingert says Rothstein “has a really great ear for storytelling, so he is able to guide a cast into a story. He has an amazing visual IQ; he can really synthesize design and the way actors move on stage. He’s an incredibly inventive stager and a master at transitions between scenes.” Benninghofen, who follows his stint in The Mirror Crack’d by playing a pesky neighbor in The Unfriend, also speaks highly of Rothstein, Asolo Rep and its loyal audience. He says he’s happy to be back this season. “The level of support and enthusiasm for Asolo Rep and the good work they do is really a sweet spot in regional theater,” he says. “They have a fantastic relationship with the community.”

Selby Gardens Celebrates the Goldstein Exhibition Series with Alexander Calder BY HUNTER HAGEMAN For the past ten years, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens has steadily reshaped what a botanical institution can be. More than a place to admire plants, Selby has become a cultural destination where art, science, and nature move together in conversation. As the Jean & Alfred Goldstein Exhibition Series reaches its 10th anniversary, Selby is marking the milestone with an artist whose work embodies motion itself: Alexander Calder. Opening on February 8, 2026, Alexander Calder: The Nature of Movement will serve as the centerpiece of the series anniversary year and, as Selby Gardens President and CEO Jennifer Rominiecki describes it, the “crescendo” of the institution’s annual programming cycle. “The Goldstein Exhibition Series opens every year in February, and it really becomes the culmination of everything we do throughout the season,” Rominiecki said. “It’s a large part of Selby Gardens’ identity, and something people truly look forward to.”
A Living Museum in Practice The Goldstein series is rooted in Selby Gardens’ Living Museum model, a philosophy that embraces rotating exhibitions, changing landscapes, and immersive programming designed to encourage repeat visitation and broaden audiences. “The Living Museum is about movement and change,” Rominiecki explained. “It’s the idea that nothing here is static. We’re always evolving through exhibitions, programs, and events, and the Goldstein series fits perfectly into that approach.” Each year, Selby selects a major artist and examines their work through a distinctive lens: their connection to nature. Rather than simply placing art within a garden, the exhibitions explore how the natural world informed the artist’s creative process. “We’re always featuring a different take on well-known artists by highlighting their often-surprising connections

to nature,” Rominiecki said. “Those connections aren’t always obvious, but once you see them, they add an entirely new level of understanding.” From Vision to Institution

The inaugural Goldstein exhibition featured Marc Chagall, an artist whose work had been studied extensively, but never within the context of nature and a botanical setting. A major loan from the Israel Museum helped establish the ambition and credibility of the series from the start. From there, the exhibitions grew in scale, scope, and public impact. In 2025, George Harrison: A Gardener’s Life drew approximately 125,000 visitors, telling the story of the Beatle who spent much of his post-music life immersed in gardening and landscape restoration. “Each year, the audience has grown,” Rominiecki said. “It’s been an incredible way to introduce new people to Selby Gardens and to build awareness of how deeply plants and nature inspire the arts.” Why Calder, Why Now 01-05-20 Aura US size New final design.indd 1

While his work is widely recognizable, Berry notes that the influence of nature on Calder’s artistic practice is less commonly explored.

That connection will be made tangible throughout Selby’s Downtown Sarasota campus. Selby Gardens is home to the finest scientifically documented collection of living epiphytes—air plants such as orchids and bromeliads that grow suspended in space without harming their host plants.
“These plants naturally echo Calder’s fascination with suspension, balance, and movement,” Berry explained. “Our horticulturists have drawn inspiration from Calder’s mobiles and stabiles when designing the mounts and displays that support epiphytes.” The result is what Selby describes as “living art,” where horticultural installations translate the core principles of Calder’s work into three-dimensional, evolving plant displays. “Visitors won’t just see Calder’s sculptures,” Berry said. “They’ll experience how his ideas are interpreted through living, breathing material.” A Sarasota Connection Calder’s fascination with movement began, in part, with the circus—a connection that resonates strongly in Sarasota. In 1925, Calder illustrated scenes of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, later creating his own miniature circus that he performed for live audiences in Paris. Those experiments with balance and motion directly influenced the kinetic sculptures that defined his career. “With Sarasota’s history as the winter home of the Ringling circus, this exhibition creates a meaningful local connection,” Berry said. The Challenge of Living Displays Designing exhibitions that merge museum-quality art with live plants comes with challenges. Plants are everchanging and ephemeral, requiring careful planning to maintain consistency over the course of a multi-month exhibition. “That challenge informs everything we do,” Berry said. “Our horticultural displays combine collection plants with commercial specimens that can be rotated regularly, creating the impression of perpetual bloom while protecting the integrity of the experience.” An Immersive Anniversary For visitors, the 10th anniversary year promises immersion, discovery, and surprise. “Our goal is always to transport visitors into a singular experience,” Rominiecki said. “We want them to learn something new and to see an artist they think they know in a different way.”

As Selby Gardens continues to plan exhibitions years in advance—much like a major museum—the Goldstein Exhibition Series remains central to its growth. Membership has now surpassed 24,000 households, making Selby the largest membership-based cultural institution in the region. “And I really can attribute part of that growth to this exhibition series,” Rominiecki said. When asked to name her favorite Goldstein exhibition, she smiled. “That’s like picking a favorite child,” she said. “The one that’s up is always my favorite.” With Calder on the horizon, Selby Gardens isn’t just celebrating ten years of exhibitions—it’s celebrating ten years of redefining how art and nature move together. SPARCC A Safer Future Starts Through Education By Reno Gomez For over 46 years, Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center (SPARCC) has been a beacon of hope in the Sarasota community, aiding in the fight for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. This vital nonprofit organization is committed to the goal of a violence-free future, working tirelessly to break the cycle of violence before it starts through community awareness and preventative education. Through community outreach and education, SPARCC hopes to enact meaningful change by building on a foundation of awareness and empathy. Each presentation it offers is tailored to its audience, both students and professionals, relying on the input from community partners to shape each session for a more personal, impactful experience. “Presentations are designed to specifically engage different types of audiences,” said Nickie Hartsock, SPARCC Director of Outreach. “In addition to lecturestyle speaking engagements, we also use activities, 92

creative expression, reflection and discussion to deliver skills-based learning sessions with the end goal of creating positive change in attitudes, beliefs and behaviors around relationship violence.” For youth programs, educators at SPARCC focus on topics that are relevant to the daily experiences and challenges that are unique to the demographic it teaches. These topics include social media, friendships, boundaries, and dating which help young students navigate complex social environments, both online and in person. Unfiltered use of social media can often blur boundaries and normalize certain harmful behaviors, making it harder for students to identify behavioral “red flags” within their social sphere. Peer pressure, the desire for acceptance, and constant connectivity can intensify unhealthy dynamics. Prevention is a long-term strategy, and while SPARCC doesn’t always see immediate statistical shifts in youthrelated cases, the impact is there. More students are
comfortable coming forward about their experiences with domestic and sexual violence, allowing for earlier intervention and reducing long-term harm. Support for these students can include safety planning, counseling options, and resources for themselves and their families. “Our role is to guide, encourage discussion, and make sure our audience knows they have options and support,” said Hartsock, “The objective is to ensure that people recognize unsafe situations, know how to get help, and feel supported when they reach out.” The recently launched High School Sports Sponsorship Prevention Program helps increase awareness of SPARCC’s resources and support programs, while promoting healthy relationship messages directly to student athletes, coaches, and families. This initiative allows the organization to reach new audiences in environments where teamwork, respect, and communication are already central values, reinforcing the core messages of preventative education in a meaningful and visible way.

As violence is a learned behavior, individuals risk continuing the cycle of violence when they don’t have the language or knowledge to identify abuse. Domestic and sexual violence affects people of all ages, and nationally, one in four women and one in six men will experience some form of violence in their lifetime. Prevention education, especially in young adults and teens, is an essential and invaluable tool. As violence is a learned behavior, individuals risk continuing the cycle of violence when they don’t have the language or knowledge to identify abuse. SPARCC also provides free professional education about domestic and sexual violence to law enforcement, health care, social services and human resource professionals. With the focus on partnership, SPARCC aims to equip these front-lines professionals with the necessary tools to best assist survivors, teaching them how to respond with compassion and empathy, and to connect survivors with support and safety.

Avant’s work seamlessly blends realism and impressionism, grounded in a lifelong practice of painting from life. meet the performer
Sierra Abelardo Sierra Abelardo is a Junior Principal with The Sarasota Ballet, admired for her musicality, clarity of line, and instinctive dramatic presence. Born in San Ramon, California, she received her training at the Ellison Ballet Professional Training Program before joining The Sarasota Ballet in 2022 as a member of the Corps de Ballet. Her exceptional growth and artistry led to rapid promotions: to Coryphée in 2023, First Soloist in 2024, and Junior Principal in 2025. She was most recently promoted while on tour with the Company at the renowned Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in July 2025, during The Sarasota Ballet’s first appearance there in a decade. Sierra’s repertoire reflects both range and depth. Her featured roles include works by Sir Frederick Ashton—A Wedding Bouquet, Birthday Offering, Façade, Les Patineurs, Romeo and Juliet, Sinfonietta, and Valses nobles et sentimentales—and by George Balanchine, including Divertimento No. 15, Emeralds, Rubies, Serenade, The Four Temperaments, Theme and Variations, Western Symphony, and Who Cares?. She has also performed in pieces by David Bintley, Gemma Bond, Johan Kobborg, Jessica Lang, Kenneth MacMillan, Christopher Wheeldon, and Sir Peter Wright. Most recently, Sierra performed the lead role in Fokine’s Les Sylphide and was chosen for one of the two lead roles in Ashley Page’s new world premiere, Scorched Sky. Her favorite role is Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments, which she treasures for its challenge and its powerful Paul Hindemith score. She especially loves wearing the elegant costumes of Ashton’s Rhapsody. Fun fact: Cats are her favorite animal and her favorite quote is: “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.”
